How to Get to the Haleakala Summit + Driving Tips

No matter where you are staying on Maui, getting to the summit of Haleakala will be a fairly long drive. As an estimate, these are the driving times from the most popular locations around the island:

  • Kahului  – 2 hours
  • Kihei – 2.5 hours
  • Wailea – 2.75 hours
  • Lahaina – 3 hours

Be aware that the driving times shown on Google maps may be slightly shorter but you also need to account for the steep winding road that leads to the summit. The bottom line is to allow plenty of extra time so that you can easily find parking before the sunset.

The Haleakala Highway may be long and full of switchbacks but the views that you will see on the way up are nothing short of spectacular. You’ll definitely want to pull over several times to jump out and take photos. Be sure to take that into consideration when planning your departure time!

On the way to the top, you may want to stop at the Kalahaku Overlook which offers an awesome view into Haleakala’s crater. This is an easy stop to make however it’s not the only chance you will get to see the crater so don’t stress if you miss it.

Haleakala Crater, Maui - Hawaii

Haleakala Crater

Haleakala driving tips – You will likely encounter all kinds of weather on this drive and if you’re lucky like me, you might even see a few rainbows! Along the drive up, you may pass through some foggy sections where visibility is low. In this case, the best thing you can do is drive slowly and keep your headlights on.

Another reason to drive cautiously on this twisting mountain road is to protect the local wildlife. You may be lucky enough to spot the Hawaiian Nene (an endangered goose) on your drive to the summit but the last place you want to see one is in the middle of the road.

Also, look out for cows on the road. When you’re driving back down in the dark, hitting a cow could be a disastrous way to end your magical sunset experience.

Is there any hiking involved? You may be wondering if there’s any hiking involved to reach the summit of Haleakala and the answer is no. You can drive yourself all the way to the top of the volcano, park your car and get out to walk around take in the scenery.

Sitting at 10,023 ft above sea level, you’re guaranteed to feel on top of the world once you reach the summit!

Do You Need a Reservation to Watch the Sunset on Haleakala?

One of the best things about watching the sunset on Haleakala is that you don’t need to book a reservation in advance. Due to limited parking spots at the summit, only 50 cars are allowed into Haleakala National Park every morning between the hours of 3am – 7am.

This means that during high season in Maui, you better believe these sunrise permits sell out very quickly. If you don’t book yourself onto a sunrise tour or reserve your spot in advance, you’re out of luck for sunrise!

On the other hand, going up for sunset gives you more flexibility and control over your day. Instead of being locked into a specific morning for sunrise, you can make the decision on the day.

This makes it much easier to plan your Haleakala sunset trip around your day’s activities and take the weather into consideration.

Entry to Haleakala National Park

Once you enter the park you will need to purchase an entrance pass at the gate. Although you do not need a reservation to enter the park for sunset, you are still required to pay the national park fee.

Entrance to the park costs $30 per vehicle and passes can be purchased online before you go or in person by credit card (cash not accepted) at the entrance station. It’s $25 per motorcycle and $15 per pedestrian or cyclist.

Once you buy your parks pass, it’s valid for 3 days. Keep in mind that lines can sometimes form at the entrance gate so you should allow enough time.

If you’re a holder of an America the Beautiful National Parks Pass , your entrance to Haleakala is already covered.

*Tip* Buying a pass to enter the national park does not include the sunrise reservation. If you want to see the sunrise on Haleakala, you still need to pay $1 and reserve your sunrise permit online in advance .

Essential Haleakala Sunset Tips

Parking – Plan to arrive early to secure a parking spot. As there is no limit to the number of cars that can enter the park during sunset, parking spaces fill up very quickly. Plan to arrive at least one hour before sunset to secure your spot.

Weather – Be sure to take the weather into consideration before beginning the journey to the summit of Haleakala. Due to the high elevation of the summit, the weather changes rapidly and sun can quickly turn to rain/clouds. Check the conditions here before you go.

Sunset time – The sunset time changes throughout the year, check the national park website for the current Haleakala sunset time.

Food/Drinks – There are no shops selling food/drinks at the summit of Haleakala, bring some snacks and warm drinks with you in a backpack.

Gas – There are no gas stations in the national park so be sure to fill up your car before making the journey to the summit. The last stop for gas before you get to the national park is at the Texaco in the town of Pukalani.

Toilets – There are toilets open to the public at the visitor’s center at the summit.

Where to watch the sunset – While the very top of the summit is the most popular sunset viewing location, you can also climb to the top of the hill near the visitor center for an equally great view and even less people.

Why You Should Choose a Sunset on Haleakala Over Sunrise

Beat the crowds – It goes without saying that the sunrise on Haleakala is a spectacular thing to see, there is a reason why it has become such an iconic Maui experience! Due to its growing popularity, you can expect to see many tour busses and crowds during this time of day.

If you’re keen to beat the crowds and have a much more peaceful experience, sunset is just as beautiful with surprisingly few people compared to sunrise.

No reservation required – Not having to reserve a day/time to watch the sunset makes it so much easier to plan your trip to the summit according to the weather. If it happens to be a stormy and grey day, you aren’t locked into a reserved timeslot.

Sunset is open for everyone and you can decide on the day whether you will make the journey to the summit of Haleakala to watch it.

Avoid an early wake up – If you’re not a fan of waking up at 3am then this reason alone is enough to choose sunset over sunrise! Instead of rushing to the summit while you’re still in a sleepy daze, you can wake up when you please and spend a relaxed day at the beach.

You can then make your way up to the summit of Haleakala on your own time and perhaps go early to see the visitor’s center and explore the crater before sunset.

Stargazing – Another great thing about watching the sunset is that you can stay a little while longer to watch the stars. Due to the high elevation of Haleakala and minimal light pollution, the skies are pristine and clear making it the ideal place to stargaze.

You’ll notice that as soon as the sun sets, everyone else seems to be in a hurry to leave. If you stay a while longer, not only will you get the summit to yourself, but you’ll get to watch the sky turn all kinds of vibrant shades until it fades to black and the stars begin to appear.

The sunset on Haleakala is truly breathtaking but there’s really nothing that compares to seeing the night sky so clearly while standing atop a volcano. If you’re into astrophotography, you’re definitely in luck on the summit of Haleakala!

What to Pack for a Sunset on Haleakala

Whether you’re planning to watch the sunrise or sunset on Haleakala, it’s pretty much always going to be cold. The summit of the volcano sits at 10,023 ft which means that the weather is significantly different than the rest of the island.

The weather at this altitude can be quite unpredictable so it’s important to dress/pack accordingly! These are some of the essential items that will make your sunset on Haleakala a more enjoyable experience. You can also read a more detailed guide on what to pack for Maui here!

Winter jacket + warm layers – It may seem strange to be packing a heavy winter jacket when it’s hot and sunny and you’ve just come back from the beach but I promise that it is necessary once you reach the summit of the volcano. Add in a bit of wind and suddenly it feels like the temperature has gone below freezing!

You should wear long pants and several warm layers under your jacket. Consider also bringing a pair of gloves and a toque/beanie. The only part of my body that was cold during the sunset was my hands because I was busy taking photos without gloves on!

Waterproof jacket – Throw one of these into your bag just in case it starts raining when you’re at the summit.

Day pack  – A good day pack is a necessity for your sunset adventure on Haleakala.

Hiking boots – You’ll be walking on loose volcanic rock so I would recommend wearing hiking boots or regular running shoes. Hiking boots is the best option if you’re planning to do any walks or hikes while you’re in the national park.

Camera – You are about to witness a once-in-a-lifetime sunset from the top of a volcano! A camera (or phone camera) is an absolutely essential item so you can remember this moment forever.

Portable phone charger – Ensure your phone stays charged throughout the evening and always be ready to capture the moment by bringing a portable charger.

Collapsible water bottle – Stay hydrated and bring a full bottle of water during your trip to Haleakala National Park, especially if you’re going to be hiking.

Folding chairs – This will make the sunset a whole lot comfier. You could also bring a beach mat to sit on but lightweight folding chairs are the best choice.

Food /Drinks – As previously mentioned, there are no shops on the mountain so I would highly recommend packing a few snacks/drinks. I was very thankful that I brought a warm thermos of coffee and a few protein bars with me to watch the sunset!

Where to Stay on Maui for a Haleakala Sunset

Most people visiting Maui choose to stay in Lahaina, Kihei or Kaanapali which offer easy access to the beach. These are beautiful spots to base yourself on the island but if you’d like to be closer to Haleakala and have quicker access to the Road to Hana, then Paia or Kula will be a great choice.

Staying in either of these areas will cut your driving time to the summit of Haleakala in half. See the best hotels in Paia here or browse accommodation options in Kula here .

Where to Rent a Car on Maui

If you’re planning to drive to the summit of Haleakala, drive the Road to Hana , or do any other sightseeing on the island then you’ll need to rent a car. The most convenient place to rent a car on Maui is at the Kahului Airport when you arrive on the island.

Whenever I travel, I use Rentalcars.com to find the best deals on car rentals. This website is great because it offers a wide selection of car rental providers with no hidden fees. See the link below to arrange your rental car before you arrive on Maui.

More Things to do in Haleakala National Park

Aside from watching the sunrise and sunset from the summit of Haleakala, there are many more things to see and do within the national park. This park covers a huge portion of the island and it can be accessed from two completely different locations.

The striking contrast between these two districts within the same national park shows you just how diverse the island of Maui is. The barren volcanic landscape of the Summit District is a completely different vibe from the lush rainforests and waterfalls of the Kīpahulu District.

Summit District

If you’re planning to watch the sunset on Haleakala, I would advise leaving extra time to stop at the visitor center and go for a short walk into the crater.

There are several hiking trails to choose from in this area but the one I will recommend is the Sliding Sands Trail . Located near the visitor center at the summit, it’s a challenging 11.5 mile trail that descends from the rim of the crater and leads you through the base, passing by cinder cones along the way.

When I visited Haleakala, I only hiked a short section of this trail so I could get a better view of the crater before making my way back to the summit in time for sunset. If you want to complete the entire hike, you should start in the morning and allow up to 7 hours.

When it comes to camping near the Haleakala summit, it is possible in a designated area. See the official parks website for more details on booking an overnight stay.

Kīpahulu District

The coastal Kīpahulu District can be included as one of your Road to Hana stops . About 12 miles past the town of Hana, this part of Haleakala National Park is known for its stunning waterfalls, beautiful bamboo forests and sweeping ocean vistas.

One of the most popular things to do here is hiking the Pipiwai Trail that takes you through the bamboo forest to the famous Waimoku Falls , one of the tallest and most impressive waterfalls on Maui.

The Kīpahulu District is also home to a beautiful campground with amazing coastal views for those who wish stay longer in the area. Find more info here about reserving your campsite in advance.

Although you cannot access the Summit District from this part of the national park, you are still required to pay a $30 fee to enter.

Stargazing atop Mt. Haleakala in Maui

Shaka Guide's Sunset and Stargazing Haleakala Tour Itinerary

December 03, 2023

Shaka Guide

Standing at an elevation of more than 10,000 feet, Haleakala is the world’s largest dormant volcano.

This national park is home to some of the most magnificent sunrise and sunset views.

Perhaps that’s where this volcano got its name? Haleakala means house of the sun in Hawaiian!

Whether you plan to visit Haleakala for sunrise, sunset, or anytime in between, Shaka Guide is your perfect companion with turn-by-turn directions, places to explore, and interesting stories and Hawaiian legends.

With over 60 audio points, a variety of hikes, and many lookouts,  plan on spending about 4-6 hours driving to the summit and back.

sunset haleakala tour stops

MID-AFTERNOON

The sun begins to set at around 5:30 in the winter and 7:00 p.m. in the summer.

On this tour, you’ll make a bunch of stops on your way up to the summit, so you can expect to spend 4-6 hours, depending on what you do.

Keep this in mind if you want to reach the summit for sunset. We recommend you start the tour around noon.

Also, if you’re staying in West Maui (the resort areas of Kaanapali and Lahaina) it’s about a two-hour drive to Haleakala.

Stop in Pukalani Town

Approximate time: 15 minutes

Make a quick stop here for some snacks and water. There is no food once you’re in the park.

Makawao Town

Approximate time: 1 hour

makawao town signboard

Just before Haleakala is a charming little town named Makawao.

Makawao is dubbed the biggest little town in Upcountry Maui and has its roots in the cattle industry.

In recent years, Makawao has evolved into a charming art town where you will find galleries and workshops of local artists, many with hawaii-inspired themes, as well as lots of tasty local food.

Hosmer Grove

Approximate time: 30 minutes

Hosmer Grove is located just outside the national park entrance at an elevation of 6,800 feet.

Here you will see trees from all around the world, including:

  • juniper and fir from North America
  • cedar and seigi pine from Japan and
  • eucalyptus trees from Australia

This is a short, relaxing, half-mile loop trail. It’s a great spot to stop and breathe in the fresh air from all the foliage around you.

It’s also a completely different landscape from the ones you’ll see later in the tour.

download shaka guide

Halemau'u Crater Hike

This 8-mile trek is actually rated hard, but we suggest you just hike the first mile, then turn around the way you came.

You’ll still get a great view of a crater rim in the condensed version and you'll have more time for the rest of the activities on this tour!

Leleiwi Overlook

overlook from leleiwi

Head in the clouds? It will be at this overlook. Most visitors pass up Leleiwi Overlook but in our opinion, it’s actually one the best on the mountain!

At the lookout, watch as clouds roll by. In one moment, the fog will be so dense you can barely see the terrain around you, in the next, it will clear giving you a panoramic view of the crater. It’s truly a sight to behold!

Kalahaku Overlook

At this overlook, you’ll see the crater floor from a completely different perspective. It’s definitely worth a stop!

Pa Ka’oao Trail

This mini hike starts at the visitor center and takes you to an overlook with a great view of the crater.

The walk is just .5 miles, and it’s well worth it. If you’re thinking to yourself, “another overlook?” Yes, but we promise -- this one has great views!

Pro tip! The nearby visitor center is a great spot to use the restroom.

Sliding Sands Trail

As you make your way back from the summit, you can return to the visitor center parking lot to hike Sliding Sands Trail.

It is a rigorous 11-mile hike, but we recommend you just hike to the first switchback or until you get tired.

You don’t need to travel far to see the expansive view of the massive crater open up before you!

When you are ready to return, just retrace your steps back the same way you came.

If you plan on doing the whole hike, or a large portion of it, remember to bring water.

The area isn’t shaded and you’ll be walking for a long time.

NOTE: we recommend you do this hike during the day.

Watch the Sunset atop Red Hill - Summit

Approximate time: 20 minutes

haleakala

About a minute past the visitor center at the end of the road, you’ll find an overlook called Pu‘u‘ula‘ula or Red Hill.

This is the actual summit of Mount Haleakala at 10,023 feet above sea level.

From here, you can watch as the sun sets for the night into the arid, mars-like landscape of Haleakala.

Drive Down The Mountain

Approximate time: 45 minutes

As you descend the mountain we’ll tell you more stories and legends about the sacred Hawaiian volcano you’ve just explored.

There are only two stops on the return trip — a viewpoint and Upcountry Maui.

If it’s past sunset and dark out, you’ll want to skip these spots.

Final Viewpoint

Approximate time: 5 minutes

As we make our way to the bottom of the mountain there is a lookout that offers one final glimpse of Maui.

Feel free to pull over for a quick view or to snap a photo.

Optional Trip to Upcountry Farms

As we near the base of Haleakala, we will approach Upcountry Maui. In Upcountry Maui there are a couple of interesting farms in the area.

Here you can find the Ali’i Lavender Farm, a great place to unwind and enjoy the fragrance of lavender.

For plant lovers, there’s Kula Botanical Garden. And, for cheese enthusiasts check out Surfing Goat Dairy.

This spot has a petting zoo and sells gourmet goat cheese and specialty items like chocolate goat cheese truffles.

Finally, you can check Maui Winery which is famous for its pineapple wine.

PLEASE NOTE: many of these shops close by 5 p.m. If you’ve stayed to watch the sunset, you can always visit these another day.

When you’re in Hawaii, we ask that you act respectfully toward the locals, land, and wildlife. Please pick up your trash; never touch any marine life, plants, or other animals; and avoid spots that are unsafe. Hawaii’s natural resources are precious, it’s up to all of us to help preserve these resources.

Haleakala at Sunset: Ultimate Guide to Watching Pure Magic in Hawaii

Posted on Published: May 23, 2022  - Last updated: January 5, 2024

Few things are more magical on this earth than Haleakala at sunset! The breathtaking views of watching the sun set above the clouds is a phenomenal experience you’ll remember forever.

This is your guide to everything you need to know about watching the sunset at Haleakala National Park.

mountainside in dark with sunset in distance above the clouds

This post may contain affiliate links. For more info, see my  disclosures .

Visitors come to Haleakala National Park and witness her beauty any time of day. With amazing hiking trails, waterfalls and out-of-this-world typography, it’s a unique place to visit. And sunset Haleakala is an amazing experience!

As someone who has witnessed both Haleakala sunrise and Haleakala at sunset, this post covers why sunset is a great time to go, Haleakala sunset tips and how to plan your perfect adventure in the park!

Haleakala National Park in Maui

crowd of people standing atop Haleakala watching the sunset orange and blue sky

Visitors flock to the summit of Haleakala for sunrise. And it’s truly an incredible experience! You can literally watch the sunrise above the crater.

As the sun peeks over the clouds, it will take your breath away!

But the Haleakala crater sunset is equally as beautiful, and with a fraction of the crowds!

Located on the island of Maui in Hawaii, Haleakala is situated on the eastern side and covers 30,183 acres. There are actually 2 main districts within the park.

The Summit District has excellent hiking opportunities and some of the best views of the island. The Kipahulu District is the coastal area that’s much more remote and offers hiking, waterfalls and coastal experiences.

Visiting Haleakala National Park is one of the best things to do in Maui on a budget !

Haleakala is a sacred place

sunset Haleakala volcanic rock above clouds with horizon in distance with blue sky

Haleakala is special to native Hawaiians throughout history and to this day. In native Hawaiian language, “Haleakala” means “House of the Sun.” The demigod Maui seized the sun and created longer days, according to legend.

For centuries, only priests were allowed to walk on the summit because it was so sacred. These days native Hawaiians are allowed to conduct traditional Hawaiian cultural practices within the entire park. It’s important for visitors to respect this history and cultural significance.

Now, the summit and crater are a national park and an epicenter for astronomers. Visitors are only allowed on hiking trails, walking paths and other public areas.

Map of Haleakala at sunset

It’s a big place! Haleakala National Park covers a large portion of Maui, and the Kipahulu and Summit Districts are really far apart. If you’re a visual person like I am, here is a map to help you plan your time in the park.

The orange icons are the suggested Haleakala crater sunset locations (more on that in a bit). The blue icons are nearby landmarks. Zoom in to see more detail!

Haleakala sunrise vs sunset

sunrise above the clouds blue sky pink orange purple

The first time I visited Haleakala National Park it was for a sunrise bike tour . We watched the sunrise then biked down Healeakala. I’d recommend it 10/10! Amazing.

You can also do a simple sunrise tour with breakfast or including the nearby towns. Based on your schedule, do what works best for you. Both are magical!

These days, since sunrise on Haleakala has become so popular, you’ll need a reservation with the National Park Service, or a paid tour to access the park for sunrise. And if you do that, you’ll wake up in the middle of the night to get there for sunrise.

Pro tip: if you choose to see Haleakala at sunrise, definitely sign up for a tour where you bike down the mountain once the sun is up. It’s one of my favorite memories of Maui!

Haleakala at sunset is way more low key

sunset Haleakala with people on side of mountain with clouds and orange sunset in distance

If you’re considering Haleakala sunrise or sunset, just know that the parking lots definitely fill up at sunset, but getting there an hour or so before sunset is sufficient. And bonus – you don’t need a Haleakala sunset reservation (at least at the time of this publication).

Watching the sun dip into the ocean with the rolling clouds below is so special!

With sunrise being the peak time to come, there’s way less people in the evening. So you won’t have busses full of tourists blocking your view.

If you like to plan adventures and be independent, Haleakala at sunset might be the way to go.

Before we get to Haleakala sunset tips, let’s talk a little about what to see and do while you’re in the national park.

Things to do in Haleakala National Park

view of path through large bamboo shoots all around it

Haleakala is such an incredible destination in Hawaii. It reminds me of hiking the NaPali Coast in Kauai . It’s stunning and looks like it’s from another world!

Whether you’re staying in Kaanapali, Hana, Kihei or anywhere else, it’s a journey to get to the top of Haleakala. So make the most of your time and enjoy these other things in the park before watching the sunset!

  • Explore the bamboo forest via the Pipiwai Trail . At 3.8 miles, this moderate hike will take you through the lush bamboo forest, unlike any you’ve ever seen.
  • Check out the visitor center(s). Located near the summit and one near the ‘Ohe’o Gulch, they include basic amenities like restrooms, water and park maps.
  • Visit the ‘Ohe’o Gulch, or the 7 Sacred Pools of ‘Ohe’o . It’s about 35 minutes past Hana and about 15 minutes past Wailua Falls in the Kipahulu District of the park. You’ll want to add this to your Maui itinerary for sure!
  • Hike into the crater, via the Sliding Sands Trail . It’s a difficult trail and is 11 miles in total – or you can hike down part of it and return back when you’re ready.
  • Catch views from the Pa Ka ‘oao or White Hill Trail . Located above the crater, this short but steep trail provides fantastic, 360 degree views of the volcano.

Allow plenty of time for activities in Haleakala, plus getting to your sunset watching location an hour or 2 early. You’ll want to explore this park to the fullest while you’re there!

Save money on travel with points: Check out the best credit card offers to save big money by using rewards points for flights and hotels. They’re so good; I regularly have 2-3 in my wallet and book most of my travel with points!

How to plan your sunset Haleakala experience

view of maui from Haleakala national park field with trees and colorful land in distance

A few things should be taken into consideration when planning your sunset trip…

  • The entrance fee is $30 per vehicle , or included in your America the Beautiful annual parks pass. If you plan to visit 3 or more national public lands over 12 months, it’s worth it to buy an annual pass. We’ve used it for Mt Rainier , Bryce Canyon, Glacier National Park and so many more!
  • You’ll have to drive down the mountain in the dark. There are no street lights, so relying on your headlights is key.
  • Consider staying for stargazing! More info on this below!
  • It’s cold. Really cold. Pack layers , then more layers as the wind on top of the summit is really cold. My favorite travel layers are merino wool , because it helps regulate your body temperature in warm and cool weather. With the wind, it can feel below freezing at the top of Haleakala!
  • Consider how long you’ll stay. Are you planning to hike before? Are you coming after a long day on the Road to Hana? You won’t want to arrive late!

Also, even if it’s rainy and cloudy on Maui the day you plan to watch the sunset at Haleakala, it’s likely clear at the summit. It sits so far above the clouds it doesn’t get much rain so don’t worry about bad weather!

What to pack for Haleakala at sunset

two kids in blue coats hiking up rocky terrain

This is truly an experience of a lifetime! Be prepared by packing the right gear.

Each time I’ve visited Haleakala, I’ve seen people wearing shorts and no coats because they didn’t plan properly and do their research. But you’re reading this, so you’ll know exactly what to bring!

  • Multiple layers. Jackets and long sleeve or medium coat . Gloves and hat too! Grab an extra blanket – or 2 from your hotel or condo to wrap around you. That’s been a lifesaver when I’ve been at the top!
  • Food or snacks and water. There are no services in Haleakala National Park so be prepared with dinner, snacks or at the very least, a full, reusable water bottle .
  • Good camera and tripod. You’re going to want to record this. If you don’t have a DSLR camera or aren’t a photographer, don’t fret! A simple GoPro or your cell phone on a tripod can record a time lapse of the event. And as a bonus – you can use a GoPro underwater for snorkeling with the sea turtles!
  • Hiking shoes. There are a few fun trails in the Summit District. Wear good hiking shoes for comfort – and they’ll be double warm! If you’re planning the Sliding Sands Trail, bring trekking poles too. These are my favorite hiking shoes that have worked perfectly for the Waihe’e Ridge Trail in Maui, Abrams Falls Trail in the Smoky Mountains and everything in between!
  • Beach chairs. These will be a lifesaver! They’re more comfortable plus it’s warmer than sitting on the cold ground. I love these folding beach chairs , and they come in so handy while traveling!
  • Sunblock. If you’re planning to be in the national park for more than an hour, the sun is powerful and you can really get sunburnt fast. Of course, make sure it’s mineral sunscreen so it’s earth-friendly and reef safe.

Where to watch the sunset Haleakala

There are a few options on where to watch the sunset at Haleakala. Let’s go over each spot in detail to help you make your decision.

1. Sunset view at Haleakala summit

The first – and most popular spot to watch the sunset – is at the summit. Sitting at 10,023 feet above sea level, this is the highest place on Maui and in Haleakala National Park.

Here you’ll find the most people but also the best view. You’ll want to get there at least 30 minutes early to find a parking spot, and potentially up to 1.5 hours in peak season. (I arrived an hour early and took one of the last spots.)

2. Views from the Haleakala Visitor Center

last sliver of light on Haleakala at sunset black photo with red blue an white line across horizon

Another option to view the sunset is the Haleakala Visitor Center at the parking lot at the top of the crater. It’s about 0.5 miles down from the summit, and still offers spectacular views.

The benefit of watching the sunset at the Haleakala Visitor Center is that the restrooms are located here, so even if you park extra early, you don’t have to worry about losing your spot to hit the restroom.

This is also where the Sliding Sands and Pa Ka oao hiking trails are. So if you choose to hike earlier in the day and get back for sunset, you don’t have to move your vehicle.

Pro tip:  there are just a few stalls that face east. If you get there plenty early – at least 1.5 to 2 hours, you’ll be able to back into those stalls and see the magical sunset from the warmth of your vehicle !

3. Sunset from the Kalahaku Overlook

view of sun dipping into horizon orange with grey clouds and rocks in foreground

The Kalahaku Overlook is about 3 miles downhill from the summit. You’re still above the clouds and you’ll get uninterrupted views of the sunset.

Watching the sunset from the Kalahaku Overlook means there’s far less crowds. Plus since you’re already 3 miles lower, getting to the bottom of Haleakala will take less time and you’ll beat the traffic, if you choose to leave right after the sun dips below the horizon.

Regardless of where you park, you’ll catch a spectacular sunset! As long as you get there early enough, you can grab the spot you wish.

What to expect: Haleakala at sunset

Haleakala sunrise vs sunset view of island of Maui looking down over clouds at night

This is where the magic happens! Get to the summit at least an hour before sunset to ensure you get a parking space and seated space with a front row view.

Pack some beach chairs or a blanket and grab a seat. Get ready to watch a magnificent show!

The crowds will start filling in around you as everyone eagerly anticipates the gorgeous Maui sunset. Just be sure not to walk in front of anyone if you need to move around.

If you’ve packed dinner, a snack or even hot cocoa this is the time to enjoy it.

Pro tip: bring an extra camera, GoPro or cell phone and set up a tripod . Video the sunset or use the time lapse setting. It’s surreal to go back and watch it later! The clouds look so cool rolling all around the volcano.

Haleakala stargazing

stargazing on Haleakala view of milky way above crater with purple sky

After the sun dips below the horizon and the glow in the sky disappears, there will be a new kind of show to see! You’ll want to wait at least an hour after the sun sets to see a fully dark sky.

With barely any light pollution from the rest of Maui and because you’re above 10,000′ up, the Milky Way can be crystal clear!

The best Haleakala stargazing views are on nearly moonless nights. Otherwise the moon can act like a street light and be pretty bright!

Be sure to turn off any lights (including interior and exterior car lights) for the best views. Sit back, relax and soak in the incredible view into our universe!

Stargazing at Haleakala reminds me of another dark sky park and it’s one of the top things to do in Glacier National Park ! That too is an unforgettable experience.

Haleakala sunset tips

haleakala national park sunset tour

Before ending this guide on watching a Haleakala sunset, here are a few final tips to make the most of your time.

  • Gas up before you go. There are no services in the park and limited gas stations once you get into Maui’s backcountry. Plan accordingly.
  • Layers, layers, layers. Did I mention before it’s going to be cold? 😉
  • Bring a credit card for your entrance fee (if you don’t have an America the Beautiful Pass)
  • Don’t touch or disturb nature. The ecosystem in Haleakala is super fragile. Stay on the trails and paths and if you see something cool, don’t touch it!
  • Practice leave no trace principles . Don’t litter, recycle and toss garbage in their proper place.
  • Slower drivers should use pullouts. Whether you’re going up or down, be courteous and mindful of others.

Haleakala at sunset – that’s a wrap!

Haleakala at sunset view of inside crater with multicolored dirt bright white clouds

Well, are you ready to see a spectacular show? It’s nature at its finest as the sun dips into the horizon.

With the right planning and gear, you’re in for a truly memorable experience. Visiting Haleakala is incredible no matter what time of day. But if you get to witness a sunset above the clouds in Hawaii, it’s a good day!

Overall rating.

Beautiful. Lifetime experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable.

My partner and I had a wonderful time visiting Haleakala national park! The breakfast was okay, continental option. It was surprisingly cold so pack an extra jacket for your stay. But it truly was an unforgettable experi ... ence, I know I will have to return and share this with my children as well one day.

Once in a life time

We toured with Kane who was knowledgeable and attentive. Felt safe driving up, and he made sure the group stayed together. Only thing is, since they feed us pastries when we first get to the lounge. I didn't really feel ... up to breakfast because it was a long morning and wanted to go back to the resort and rest. The experience alone was amazing, far more than I expected. I recommend booking this trip.

Haleakalā is known as the house of the sun.

Haleakala National Park’s past is quite fascinating. Before you visit the area, you should familiarize yourself with the geological history, traditional folk tales, and cultural significance surrounding the area – that way, you can fully appreciate the park itself!

Historically speaking, Haleakala National Park is built on and around a massive dormant volcano that last exploded sometime between 1400 and 1680. It has exploded over ten times in the last 1,000 years. Some of the valleys and mountains were actually formed by past eruptions!

While the Haleakala volcano is not the largest or most destructive in Hawaii, scientists think it caused immense damage the last time it erupted, and predict that it’ll erupt again in 400-500 years. They carefully monitor the area, watching for signs of an unexpected eruption.

Haleakala National Park also has areas of significant cultural importance. There are too many of these to properly cover in this article, though. So if you’re interested, I’d absolutely recommend doing your research!

One of the most significant, though, is also incidentally what created the name for the park – “Haleakala” means the “House of the Sun” in Hawaiian. The name originated because of a myth involving Maui, who legend says lassoed the sun to watch it descend.

Now, the Haleakala National Park is open to visitors every hour and day of the year for tourists such as us to enjoy!

How to Get Ready For Haleakala Crater

My top recommendation for any tourist preparing to visit the Haleakala National Park is to fully plan your itinerary and activities before you start packing. You’ll be packing very different items depending on what you want to do.

For example, if you’re interested in hiking in the upper reaches of mountainous terrain, you’ll want to bring the proper gear and clothing – more on that later.

Haleakala National Park is well-known for its terrain and landscapes, which some find so unique that they describe it as otherworldly. Whether you’re looking for beautiful green meadows, volcanic cinder cones, immense mountains, lush valleys, or fields of lava rock, Haleakala likely has the natural setting for you.

Things to do at Haleakala National Park

Although one of the most popular activities here is doubtlessly watching the sunrise/sunset, there are a multitude of activites you should prepare for. For example, if you don’t manage to secure a booking to watch the sunrise, you can always schedule a hike before sunset.

Check Out Hawaiian Wildlife

Haleakala National Park is the place for you if you’re interested in learning about and viewing unique Hawaiian wildlife that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Designated as a sanctuary for many species of rare flora and fauna.

One of the best examples is Hawaii’s state bird, the Nene, also known as the Hawaiian goose. In 1967, this bird species was teetering on extinction with only 30 specimens remaining. This is due to overhunting, disease, and destroying their natural habitats.

Now, thanks to the protection of the Endangered Species Act and the hard work of scientists and park rangers, over 3,000 birds remain statewide, a large percentage of which find their home at the Haleakala National Park.

As you visit the park, you may be lucky enough to see the majestic and beautiful state bird for yourself. Additionally, you might see other species of native Hawaii birds. These include the peuo, multiple types of forest birds, and the ‘ua’u, also called the Hawaiian petrel.

The ‘ua’u are small seabirds that navigate at night using the light of the stars. As such, they can often get confused by the lights of the city, and can exhaust themselves and become grounded as a result. If you ever find a grounded ‘ua’u, visit the NPS website for instructions.

Haleakala Camping

For those who truly want to experience nature first-hand, camping may be your activity. There is no better way to connect with, live in, and experience nature first-hand. This is especially true in a setting as beautiful as the Haleakala National Park.

For experienced hikers who wish to experience a difficult trail as much as camping, I’d recommend going to Paliku . This is roughly 10.4 miles down the Halemauu Trail. Or you can hike 9.3 miles down the Sliding Sands Trail . The Sliding Sands Trail is definitely the more difficult hike.

Holua is an option for those who don’t want to experience such a strenuous hike. Located 3.7 miles down the Halemauu Trail, it is just as gorgeous as Paliku. Plus it’s much easier to access for the average person.

For those who wish to experience nature without the inconveniences of overnight hiking, I’d recommend taking a scenic hike or biking. You can do this either on your own and at your own pace or with a tour guide.

Skywatching

Last but definitely not least of the three categories is skywatching. Haleakala’s skyscapes are unmatched in beauty, free of light pollution, and enthralling whether you’re observing the sunset, sunrise, or the stars.

The best place to admire the sky is at the Haleakala Crater Summit. Even along the trail, the view is unmatched if you veer away from the traffic.

Utop the summit, the horizon stretches uninhibited for over 150 miles. This allows you a completely unobscured view of the sky at any time of the day. From there, you can book tickets and enjoy the sunrise early in the morning. You can hike up and admire the sunset, or camp overnight and watch the stars.

Stargazing is often underrated and under-discussed, despite being one of the best activities to do on Maui at night. If you’re planning on doing so, stop by the Haleakala visitor center or search online for a map of the constellations!

Visiting Haleakala National Park can truly be a life-changing adventure. To ensure that you truly enjoy your experience, here are three tips for a perfect Haleakala adventure!

Haleakala National Park Tips

There are endless activities and sights for you to enjoy at the Haleakala National Park. I’ve done my best to separate most of them into three main categories.

Keep scrolling if you’re ready for a picture-perfect trip to Haleakala National Park!

Leave No Trace

One of the most important rules to respect when visiting natural treasure troves such as the Haleakala National Park is to leave no trace. Clean up any trash and camping materials to keep the animals and their habitats safe and clean.

Other essential principles are to never feed or get too close to the wildlife and treat the environment with its due respect.

If you’re interested in a chance to see these animals and more up close, book a seat on the Maui Haleakala Tour . If you’re interested, check out the latest prices and details !

Pack Smartly

That brings us to tip number two! If you’re planning on exploring the summit of Haleakala National Park, you must pack the proper items.

Although the warm tropical weather of ground-level Maui may convince you otherwise, you absolutely need more clothes than beach shorts and flip-flops.

If you’re planning on camping, I’d recommend bringing anything you can reasonably fit into your suitcase. Although there are rental shops for camping gear in the camp, it’s a costly investment that can be easily avoided. Remember, little fees pile up!

I’d argue that some other supplies are a must. For example, the weather at Haleakala can become suffocatingly hot. So I’d bring plenty of water to any excursion, reef-safe sunscreen , and a high-quality sunhat.

Finally, make sure you put together and pack a simple first-aid kit , especially for long hikes or overnight camping. Find the best prices and deals here !

Dress Warmly

A basic rule of tourism and travel is that the higher the altitude of the area, the colder it will be. Temperatures at the Haleakala Summit are on average twenty degrees Farenheit colder than at sea level.

If you’re planning on skygazing at the Haleakala Crater Summit, prepare for cold weather. Otherwise, the feeling of chilliness may ruin your experience!

When packing and preparing for your excursions, make sure to bring a thick and warm jacket, gloves and boots!

How to Make Haleakala Sunrise Reservations

Haleakala Sunrise reservations are only $1 a car but are absolutely required in order to see the sunset. Because of how quickly they sell out, I’d recommend buying tickets here at least two weeks before your planned date.

Without tickets, you will not be let in through the gate until after 7 a.m. , by which time the sunrise will be long over.

If you don’t manage to book tickets for the date of your visit, don’t worry – you can still experience a beautiful skyscape by planning to visit during the sunset, or even booking a Haleakala Sunset Tour .

Best Haleakala National Park Tours

If you’re interested in participating in a tour to decrease your own stress and responsibilities, here are some of the best the park offers!

Haleakala Sunrise Tour

If you’re stressed about booking tickets or driving to the summit to see the sunrise, the Haleakala Sunrise Tour , despite being somewhat costly, is the best option.

Consisting of a delicious breakfast, a knowledgeable tour guide, and a hotel pick-up and drop-off, it is truly one of the best ways to experience the sunrise. Check out the latest prices and more details .

Haleakala Sunrise Bike Tour

If you’re interested in an intense biking journey , this is the tour for you. It descends over 6,500 feet from the park entrance to a small North Shore town called Haiku. Here you can rejuvenate yourself by eating delicious Hawaiian cuisine. Check out the latest prices and more details .

Sunset at Haleakala Tour with Dinner

If you perhaps missed the sunrise for any reason or simply want to avoid the crowds the sunrise attracts, this tour brings up to the summit to watch the sunset and enjoy a delicious three-course meal. Check out the latest prices and more details .

Haleakala Stargazing Tours

If you’re planning on stargazing or overnight camping, download this audio tour . It has accurate directions as to where to best see the stars. Check out the latest prices and more details .

Haleakalā National Park FAQs

I, and many other tourists, found the sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā Carter immensely beautiful and breathtaking. However, the sky at the summit is beautiful at almost any time of the day, whether you’re stargazing or admiring the sunset!

Lots! You can hike, stargaze, camp, watch a breathtaking sunrise, go mountain biking, and talk to local park rangers!

Unfortunately, no! The area with the most easily accessible active volcanoes is definitely at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. However, Haleakalā itself is a dormant volcano, so there are multiple locations at the park where you can see lava rock formations.

Tips for Haleakala National Park Wrap Up

With these three tips, your experience at the Haleakala National Park will doubtlessly be fun and memorable.

Lastly, there are some safety reminders and information from the National Parks Service you should also keep in mind. This is especially vital if you’re driving up to watch the sunrise.

  • Weather is often windy and wet, especially at higher elevations.
  • There are no weather predictions available for times before 7 a.m.
  • Temperatures immediately before dawn and immediately after dusk are regularly below freezing.
  • There are no essentials for sale within the park.
  • It takes roughly 1.5 hours to commute between the summit and Kahului.
  • Roads within the park often do not have rails or guards. Drive with the utmost caution.
  • Parking is restricted to designated lots only, and will be closed when full.
