All You Need To Know About Lee Know from ‘Stray Kids’

lee know tour

Lee Know is a South Korean dancer, rapper and singer, who first became known to the public through JYP Entertainment’s reality television show “Stray Kids,” as one of the aspiring Korean Pop (K-Pop) idols. He was first eliminated, then later included in the final line-up for the debuting boyband called Stray Kids. His group released the platinum-certified studio album “Go Live,” and its repackaged album “In Life” in 2020. He was once a back-up dancer of BTS, but has come a long way since then.

Early life and family

Lee Know was born Lee Minho on 25 October 1998, in Gimpo, South Korea. He’s an only child, and not much is known about his parents, except that his father works in the furniture industry. He underwent surgery on his tummy when he was a kid.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CLdmPr1HU6j/

Educational background

He attended Daegot Elementary School where he dreamed of becoming a policeman, and then at Daegot Middle School an architect. He matriculated from Gimpo Jeil Technical High School.

First steps

Dancing has been his interest since he was in middle school, and it eventually became his profession. He had been dancing for four to five years, and worked as a back-up dancer for BTS during the boyband’s promotions for “Fire” in 2016 until “Spring Day” in 2017, appearing in their music video of “Not Today.” During the 2017 BTS Live Trilogy Episode III (Final Chapter): The Wings Tour, particularly the Japanese leg of the tour, he performed with the group in some of their dance stages.

It was the thrill of performing on stage that made him realize even more how much he wanted to be the star on stage, instead of one of the back-up dancers. He dreamt of becoming an idol in the past, and was even briefly featured as one of the hopefuls in a documentary about K-Pop done by National Geographic. However, nothing came out of his auditions for entertainment companies such as Cube Entertainment and JYP Entertainment (JYPE), at that time.

During a dance competition, he was scouted by a casting agent from JYPE – which launched K-Pop groups such as 2PM, Miss A, Got7, and Twice that became successful – and was invited to audition. He sang “Thought of You” by John Park, but thought that he’d failed as he didn’t hear from them for a long time, so he continued his career as a dancer. He eventually got a call from them and officially became a trainee.

The training program of the company involved end of the month evaluations to assess the skills of their trainees, after receiving lessons on vocals, dance, rap, and other aspects of performing, all in front of the camera. The company held an annual showcase for trainees to check their star qualities, as they performed on stage in front of an audience.

Homecoming trainee showcase and Stray Kids reality show

In 2017, JYP held their trainee showcase called “Homecoming” – some of their trainees performed solo, while other performed as a group. A male  team called the male project team competed against a female trainees’ team that day for a chance to debut. The male team, of which Lee Know was a member, was chosen based on their teamwork, as the next K-Pop group that the company would launch.

However, debuting was not that simple as the male project team was not formed by the company but by Bang Chan, who had been a JYP trainee for seven years, and JYPE founder Park Jinyoung wanted to further evaluate them as a whole group.

*faints* 😳 #LEEKNOW https://t.co/N7Ldka3NED — 🃏 (@babystayslove) February 19, 2021

He decided to document the debut process through the reality TV survival series called “Stray Kids”, also warning them of the possibility that not all nine members would debut. The concept for the show was JYP vs trainees.

Lee Know moved into the dorm provided by the agency, as the group started preparing for their first mission, which was to write their own song, and create a cool stage. “Hellevator” was the result, which they performed on 4 Octoberion the second episode. It was released as a digital single on 1 November, and the music video on 7 October, which has garnered almost 76 million views to date. They received praise from Park Jinyoung, but Lee Know failed to impress him, and was eliminated after episode four, for not getting the lyrics right in another performance. His skills were still lacking as his training period was less than a year, much shorter than the others, so he continued to train and practice hard at the studio.

Park Jinyoung met with Lee Know and another eliminated member, Felix, and gave them another chance, saying he’d like to see again the chemistry of having nine members in the group that he saw during the showcase. The last mission was aired live on 19 December 2017 on Mnet, and fortunately 96% of the viewers voted in favor of the group having nine members as opposed to seven. The final lineup included Lee Know, Bang Chan (leader), Changbin, Felix, Han, Hyunjin, I.N, Seungmin, and Woojin.

The group released the pre-debut (EP) entitled “Mixtape” in January 2018, which consisted of songs they performed on the reality TV series. It peaked at No.2 on the Gaon Album Chart with over 60,000 copies sold in South Korea that year. The EP also made it on three US Billboard Charts – the World Albums at No.2, Independent Albums at No.22, and Top Heatseekers Albums at No.6. Lee Minho was credited as one of the lyricists for the fifth track, “Glow.”

Stray Kids debut

During the show, he still used his real name, but when he debuted he decided to use the stage name Lee Know, because he shared the name with a famous actor, Lee Minho, known for high-rating dramas such as “Boys Over Flowers” and “The King: Eternal Monarch.” There are also idols named Minho, such as Choi Minho from Shinee and Song Minho from Winner.

They held their debut showcase called “Stray Kids Unveil (Op.01: I Am Not)” on 25 March 2018, before officially debuting the next day, releasing their first EP entitled “I Am Not.” It peaked at No.4 on the Gaon Album Chart with more than 86,000 copies sold that year, and No.5 on Billboard’s World Albums Chart. The lead single, “District 9,” didn’t enter the domestic chart but reached No.10 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales Chart. Its MV attracted over 51 million views.

At the Korean Convention music festival known as KCON held in Japan in April 2018, Stray Kids was included in the line-up of performers.

lee know tour

It felt surreal for Lee Know to be performing there on stage as an idol, as he was only a back-up dancer for BTS the last time he performed in Japan.

Lee Know and the boys released two more EPs that year – “I Am Who” and “I Am You,” which sold over 91,000 and around 110,000 respectively. Both performed well on the Gaon Album Chart and Billboard’s World Albums Chart. The “I Am” series included a bonus track for the physical editions, and all members took part in the songwriting process.

The group won the Rookie of the Year Award from Seoul Music, Mnet Asian Music, Golden Disc, and Korea First Brand Awards.

Further success

Stray Kids embarked on a concert tour called “Unveil Tour: I…Am,” which kicked off in Bangkok with 4,000 fans in attendance on 19 January 2019, followed by the rest of Asia with stops in the US and the UK. The tour culminated in Yokohama, Japan on 27 September 2019.

They also released the Clé series that year – “Clé 1: Miroh,” released on 25 March topped the Gaon Weekly Album Chart, and was at No.31 on the year-end chart; more than 170,000 copies were sold that year. It peaked at No.3 on Billboard’s World Albums Chart as it sold 1,000 copies in the US in the week of its release, No.20 on Individual Albums Chart, and No.13 on Top Heatseekers Albums Chart. It also entered the weekly music charts in France, Hungary, Japan and the UK.

Its lead single, “Miroh” gave Lee Know and the boys their first music show win as the No.1 Song of the Week on 4 April 2019 courtesy of Mnet’s “M Countdown.” Reaching this milestone was an indication of their growing popularity in South Korea. The official MV had 110 million views, and BuzzFeed ranked it at No.5 on the “Best K-Pop Videos of 2019.” The EP’s sixth track, “Chronosaurus,” was No.8 on MTV’s “The Best K-Pop B-sides of 2019.”

lee know tour

Less than three months after that, they released their special album entitled “Clé 2: Yellow Wood,” which comprised of four previously released “Mixtape” songs included in the physical CDs of their four Eps, and three new tracks including “Road Not Taken,” “TMT,” and the lead single, “Side Effects.” The EP peaked at No.2 on the Gaon Weekly Album Chart, and No.38 on the year-end chart with 155,000 copies sold. It also did well on various international music charts, including the Billboard’s World Albums Chart at No.9 and Japan’s Oricon Chart at No.17. The lead single reached No.16 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales Chart, and Dazed ranked it at No.1 on “The 20 Best K-Pop Songs of 2019.”

Stray Kids became an eight-member group when Woojin’s contract with JYP Entertainment was terminated in October 2019 for personal reasons.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CKY0vbRnP5W/

As a result, Lee Know and the remaining members had to re-record the tracks for their fifth EP, “Clé: Levanter,” and its release was pushed back to the 9 th of December instead of 25 th of November as initially announced.

The digital EP had seven songs including the pre-released single, “Double Knot,” and lead track, “Levanter” while the physical EP had a bonus track called “Mixtape#5.” The EP topped the Gaon Chart and sold over 180,000 copies, making it the second best-selling album for the month of December.

They held a two-day concert in Seoul on the 23 rd and 24 th of November 2019 to kick off their world tour called “District 9: Unlock”, followed by eight concert dates from January to February 2020 in the US, which started in New York and ended in Los Angeles. The rest of their tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic that restricted travel and mass gathering.

Lee Know and his group released their first studio album, “Go Live” in June 2020, and it was certified platinum by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) for exceeding 250,000 copies sold, more than 360,000 copies by the end of the year. It claimed the top spot on the Gaon Album Chart, and reached No.4 on Billboard’s World Albums Chart. According to Billboard, it was the 10 th Best K-Pop Album of 2020. The lead single, “God’s Menu,” was in BuzzFeed’s list of the “35 Songs That Helped Define K-Pop in 2020” at No.15; its MV had 184 million views.

The album was reissued as “In Life” in September 2020, and topped the Gaon Album Chart with over 440,000 copies sold that year, which earned them a platinum certification from the KMCA.

It peaked at No.4 on Billboard’s World Albums Chart, and “Time Magazine included it on their list of “Albums That Defined K-Pop’s Monumental Year in 2020.” The lead single, “Back Door” was No.10 on Billboard’s “The 20 Best K-Pop Songs of 2020: Critics’ Picks.” Lee Know co-wrote the 7 th track, “Wow,” and recorded it with Hyunjin and Felix.

They won the Best Korean Act at the 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards. Stray Kids will be participating in Mnet’s reality TV competition show, “Kingdom,” scheduled to air on 1 April 2021.

Personal life

Lee Know is 22 and known to be single. There is no news of him dating anyone at the moment, as he is still bound by the “no dating” policy imposed by his agency for the first three to five years after debut. His ideal type is someone he can comfortably talk with.

He shares a room with Seungmin, Bang Chan and Hyunjin in the dorm provided by the company.

Personal life

Lee Min-ho was born on October 25, 1998 in Gimpo, South Korea. He grew up in Daegot-myeon [4] .

He adopted his first cat Soonie in 2011 and his second cat Doongie around 2013.

When he was in middle school, he watched a dance video that made him want to take dance classes. [5] He joined Souldance Studio in Seoul and stayed there for five years, attending BICO's classes.

While doing dance gigs and completing his education, he had several part time jobs in order to pay transport fares and cram schools. [6] [7]

He graduated from Gimpo Jeil Technical High School in computer sciences. [8] He passed an entrance exam at the Chugye University For The Arts with a self choreography [9] and joined the campus on March 2017. He kept attending even after debuting, but left at some point.

He adopted his third cat, Dori , in February 2019.

He is currently enrolled at Gukje Cyber University under the Department of Entertainment Studies. [10]

In November 2023, he participated in the "Love Your W" campaign by W Korea to raise awareness about breast cancer. [11]

On February 29, 2024, it was announced that Lee Know had donated 100 million won to World Vision's "Global Hunger Crisis Response" project to help children face food shortages in the poorest countries, and was appointed as a member of the "Bob Pierce" donors club. [12] .

2016-2017: Predebut

Lee Min-ho pursued dancing professionally. He participated in various dance competitions with his crew "Cupcakes", such as "World of Dance" in 2016 [13] . Around the same time, he became a backup dancer for BTS , from the songs " Fire " to " Spring Day ". [14] and participated in the " Wings Tour " in early 2017. During his backup dancing career, he realized that he wanted to stand at the center of the stage, so he became a singer. [15]

Minho had auditioned for JYP Entertainment back in 2015 after being noticed during a global dance event, but he didnt hear from them and thought he had failed. He continued his life as a dancer, until he was finally called back two years later [14] . He joined JYPE on July 15, 2017, making the last member of Stray Kids to join the lineup. [16]

His individual picture and name were officially revealed by the company on October 11, 2017 at noon, for his participation in the upcoming survival show Stray Kids . [17] He was introduced with the role "Dance". During the show, he was eliminated on episode 4 because he lacked confidence and made mistakes while rapping, but he was brought back for a last chance on the final broadcast on December 19, 2017. Through the audience voting in favor of the 9-member group over the 7-member group, it was then confirmed that Min-ho would debut with the boy group Stray Kids.

2018-present: Stray Kids

On March 26, 2018, Minho debuted under the stage name "Lee Know" with the mini album I am NOT as the main dancer and sub vocalist of Stray Kids. [18] He also has the unofficial role of dance leader, as he leads the group's dance practices and helps the other members with learning the choreos through his previous experience in dancing.

On July 3, 2019, Lee Know choreographed and released the dance performance " DAWN " as part of the SKZ-PLAYER series.

On July 3, 2021, Lee Know co-wrote and released the song " Drive " for the SKZ-PLAYER series along with Bang Chan .

On August 14, 2021, Lee Know became a fixed MC at Show! Music Core with NCT Jungwoo and former IZ*ONE Kim Minju . [19]

Lee Know co-wrote and co-composed his original and first solo song " Limbo " for the best album SKZ-REPLAY , released on December 21, 2022.

On November 4, 2023, he stepped down of his duties at Show! Music Core after more than two years of MCing. [20]

On February 22, 2024, Lee Know released a cover of DAY6's " Love me or Leave me ", his first solo SKZ-RECORD release.

Lee Know's initial dance genre (and his favorite) is hip-hop, with a recognizable style of the Souldance studio he was part of. His dancing is characterized by a neat isolation of body parts, as well as sharp yet smooth movements following the beat with the right intensity.

Vocally, Lee Know is known for his falsettos.

Even though he never had an official rapper role, J.Y. Park asked Lee Know to take rap parts during the survival show, as he deemed his voice too weak for singing. This led him to get assigned with shorter lines, both rapping and singing. Even though he has more frequent singing parts, rap parts he did became some of his most famous lines, like his introductory rap in " Boxer ".

Check out the following reports for complete information and schedule update for Stray Kids concert in the US.

Stray Kids Members Lee Know, Felix, IN Having Completed COVID-19 Quarantine & Will Rejoin 2022 World Tour Concert – A Schedule Update!

It is a happy and joyful day in the STAYville because Stray Kids will finally be back in full formation very soon!

On July 8 local time, JYP Entertainment posted an official update about Stray Kids members Lee Know, Felix, and IN. According to the update, the three Stray Kids members completed their quarantine requirement as of July 8.

Previously, the three Stray Kids members suddenly stopped all their activities after  tested positive  for COVID-19. As a result, Stray Kids had to postpone their 2022 world tour,  “MANIAC,”  in the US as well.

“Hello, this is JYPE. We inform you that Stray Kids members Lee Know, Felix, and I.N’s quarantine has been concluded as of July 8 (Friday), 0AM (local time).”  JYP Entertainment.

Are They Okay?

Now that the three Stray Kids members have completed their COVID-19 quarantine, what about their health condition?

According to the announcement, Stray Kids members Lee Know, Felix, and IN had also received treatments in line with the United States CDC guidelines. Fortunately, since there were no specific apparent COVID-19 symptoms, the three Stray Kids members ended their quarantine period in 6 days only. After all, the US CDC requires a 5-day quarantine minimum for people who are exposed or tested positive for COVID-19.

“Lee Know, Felix, and I.N had been in quarantine and undergoing treatment in accordance with the United States CDC guidelines since July 2 (Saturday), and they did not present any particular symptoms during the quarantine period.”  JYP Entertainment.

The Three Stray Kids Members Will Join the Remaining 2022 World Tour Concert

JYP Entertainment further explained in the announcement that since the three Stray Kids members had tested negative for COVID-19, they will be able to participate in the remaining 2022 World Tour concert schedule.

After completing the quarantine, Stray Kids Lee Know, Felix, and IN took rapid antigen tests. These tests all resulted in negative. That is why they will be able to rejoin all the other Stray Kids members in the remaining 2022 World Tour concert schedule.

“Upon the conclusion of their quarantine, Lee Know, Felix, and I.N took COVID-19 rapid antigen tests and tested negative. Therefore, the three will be participating in the remaining tour dates starting from the Stray Kids 2nd World Tour “MANIAC” in LA on July 9 (Saturday, local time).”  JYP Entertainment.

A Schedule Update for Stray Kids World Tour 2022 Concert

Finally, Stray Kids will continue their previously postponed World Tour 2022 concert starting from LA this weekend. Here’s the schedule update for Stray Kids concert in the US:

  • July 9 – 10  :  Los Angeles
  • July 12   :  Oakland
  • July 14 – 15   :  Seattle
  • July 19 – 20  :  Anaheim

Lee Know, Felix, and IN Must Continue Monitoring Their Condition

Still, completing quarantine does not guarantee that the Stray Kids members have 100% fully recovered from COVID-19 after effect.

As CDC also suggests on their official website , people who have tested positive for COVID-19 but presented no symptoms are still required to monitor their condition and continue wearing masks around others until day 10. Therefore, even though Stray Kids Lee Know, Felix, and IN may join the other members in their remaining concert schedule, they still have to closely monitor their health and wear masks around others on the remaining day 6 to 10.

But we don’t need to worry because JYP Entertainment also stated that they would prioritize the artists’ health and follow CDC guidelines.

“JYPE will continue to place the artist’s health as the highest priority and abide by CDC guidelines.”  JYP Entertainment.

So, are you happy and excited now that Lee Know, Felix, and IN will join the other members on remaining 2022 World Tour concert schedule? Please, feel free to share your excitement in the comments section below.

lee know tour

On February 28 KST, World Vision , an esteemed international relief and development NGO, announced the appointment of Stray Kids member Lee Know to the ' Bob Pierce Honor Club '.

The Bob Pierce Honor Club is an esteemed group of major donors named after the organization's founder, Bob Pierce. Individuals who have contributed over 100 million won and exhibit a deep empathy towards various global issues, leading the charge in advocating the value of sharing, are selected as members. This club serves as a platform to foster a culture of active philanthropy by transparently disclosing the outcomes of donations. Notable figures like JYP Entertainment producer JY Park  are among those who champion the value of sharing across various sectors of society.

In January, Lee Know generously donated 100 million won to World Vision's global food crisis response project, aiding children in the world's poorest regions facing food shortages exacerbated by rapid climate change. Moreover, in February of last year, he actively participated in emergency relief efforts following a significant earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Since 2014, Lee Know has also been actively involved in World Vision's overseas child sponsorship program, forming partnerships with a total of four children both domestically and abroad. Through these sponsorships, he has spearheaded initiatives to support underprivileged children, both locally and internationally.

Expressing his gratitude, Lee Know stated, " I am humbled to be able to contribute in any way to children in need, both at home and abroad. I will continue to reflect on how I can leverage my resources to make a positive impact and share the love I have received. "

World Vision Chairman Cho Myung Hwan praised Lee Know for his unwavering dedication to supporting children in need, making him the youngest member ever to join the Bob Pierce Honor Club. He emphasized the hope that Lee Know's positive influence would resonate through World Vision's initiatives, expressing his commitment to furthering this cause.

In addition to his individual efforts, Lee Know, alongside fellow Stray Kids members Bang Chan , Hyunjin , Han , and Seungmin , collaborated with World Vision to host a ' DREAM DAY ' event in October last year. This event, part of World Vision's ' Dreaming Children ' project, brought together 16 teenagers aspiring to become singers. Through mentorship sessions, storytelling, advice-giving, and choreography lessons, the Stray Kids members inspired and supported the dreams of these young individuals.

Alan Jackson

Many of country music’s top artists, studio musicians and executives were feted on Wednesday night (Aug. 21) during the 17 th Academy of Country Music Honors, held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

ACM CEO Damon Whiteside ushered in the evening, welcoming attendees and saying, “Congratulations to all of the honorees that are with us. We can’t wait to celebrate with you tonight.”

Among the artists who took part or were celebrated were nearly 10 past and present ACM entertainer of the year winners, including Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Dolly Parton and Lainey Wilson.

Carly Pearce returned for a fourth year as host, leading the evening with co-host and reigning ACM song of the year winner Jordan Davis , who wrote his hit “Next Thing You Know” with Josh Osborne, Chase McGill and Greylan James.

“This show is the industry’s favorite night because it honors not only the artists but the behind-the-scenes community that makes what we do possible,” Pearce told the audience.

Tyler Hubbard , an 11-time ACM Award winner, presented the ACM Studio Recording and Industry Awards portion of the show. Choctaw Grand Theater won casino of the year – theater, while Uncasville, Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena earned its eighth casino of the year – arena category win. Singer-songwriter Tony Orlando, who performed his final concert at the Mohegan after six decades of entertaining audiences, accepted the accolade and called the venue “a cathedral of music.”

“People cut their teeth and became megastars in that arena,” Orlando said, noting stars including Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift performed in the venue at points in their careers. “They care about you, they care about those who attend the shows and support the performers.”

Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, won its third outdoor venue of the year accolade, Tortuga Music Festival was named festival of the year for a third time, while San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo earned its second fair/rodeo of the year win.

Former San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. president David White said, “Thank you for giving us the ability to preserve rodeo heritage…and supporting country music.” Ed Warm accepted for Joe’s Live in Rosemont, Ill., which won its third club of the year trophy, while Warm was named ACM Don Romeo talent buyer of the year.

“I’m humbled to be standing here accepting these honors and I want to acknowledge the other nominees. You’re the ones who set the standard in this industry. At Joe’s Live we try to do things the right way, with passion, integrity, and a deep love of country music,” Warm said.

Over 130+ years, the Ryman Auditorium has transformed from a tabernacle to one of the most revered venues. The Ryman earned its eighth win for ACM theater of the year. Ryman Auditorium director of concerts Chrissy Hall accepted the honor, saying, “We don’t do this alone at all and most of the people that make this place so special are working for you all tonight. I dedicate this to the crew here at the Ryman.”

Fellow Nashville venue Bridgestone Arena earned its sixth win for ACM arena of the year. AEG promoter Adam Weiser earned his first ACM Award for ACM promoter of the year. “This is all about community,” Weiser said. “I’m truly blessed to work with the best people.”

Among the studio recording artist winners were steel guitar player Paul Franklin, producer Dann Huff, bass player Jimmie Lee Sloas, electric guitar player Rob McNelley, piano/keys players Jim “Moose” Brown and David Dorn, audio engineer Jim Cooley, guitar player Charlie Worsham and drummer Jerry Roe. A Gibson Les Paul guitar signed by many of the honorees was auctioned off to benefit ACM Lifting Lives. Among the bidders were Luke Bryan and Garth Brooks, with $125,000 raised through the auction.

From there, the performance portion of the evening began, with music from Lauren Alaina, Jason Aldean, Davis, Jackson Dean, Kameron Marlowe, Carly Pearce, Lee Ann Womack, Eric Church, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Tyler Hubbard, Jamey Johnson, Ashley McBryde, Terri Clark and Keith Urban.

Alan Jackson and Walt Aldridge were honored with the ACM’s poets award, presented to a songwriter for outstanding and longstanding musical and/or lyrical contributions throughout their career. Davis and Pearce launched the musical events, honoring Alan Jackson, with Davis performing “Chattahoochie” and Pearce performing “Don’t Rock the Jukebox.” Marlowe feted Aldridge with a blistering version of “Modern-Day Bonnie and Clyde.” Aldridge’s credits include Ronnie Milsap’s “(There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me” and Earl Thomas Conley’s “Holding Her and Loving You.”

Lainey Wilson, who will release her new album Whirlwind on Friday (Aug. 23), was honored as this year’s triple-crown winner, earning a coveted accolade Wilson qualified for by winning the ACM’s new female artist of the year, female artist of the year, and entertainer of the year honors. It’s an honor only nine others have won, including Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney and Carrie Underwood. Wilson also wins this year’s milestone award, presented to an artist, duo/group or industry leader for a specific, unprecedented or outstanding achievement in the field of country music during the preceding calendar year. In May, Wilson was named the ACM’s entertainer of the year.

Trisha Yearwood and producer/musician/industry executive Tony Brown were honored with the ACM Icon Award, which fetes an artist, duo/group or industry leader who has advanced the popularity of the genre through contributions to different areas of the industry, including songwriting, recording, production, film and more. Harris and Alaina feted Yearwood with a duet of “The Song Remembers When.”

More performances followed, as Chris Stapleton was honored as artist-songwriter of the year, with Jamey Johnson delivering a somber, convicting rendition of Stapleton’s “Whiskey and You.”

The evening also highlighted the ACM Lifting Lives grant cycle, fueled by Music Has Value. As part of this segment, Jackson Dean, who was wearing a shirt owned by the late Glen Campbell, honored Campbell with a rendition of Campbell’s “Strong.” Luke Bryan was honored with the ACM Lifting Lives Award for his various charitable endeavors through the years, most notably his Farm Tour, which helps create scholarships for students in rural areas to attend agricultural colleges. Since the tour’s inception in 2009, he has awarded more than 80 scholarships.

“Over the years I’ve watched him give 110% to whatever he does, especially when it comes to helping others,” Bryan’s fellow country artist Jason Aldean said in honoring his friend.

“I’m so blessed to be part of this industry where every day, people go the extra mile to help,” Bryan said, noting the work that ACM Lifting Lives does to help others.”

The 17 th ACM Honors will air Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. ET on Merit Street, marking the first time the special will air on the network, as part of a larger partnership between Merit Street Media and the Academy of Country Music. Below, we look at five top musical moments from this year’s ACM Honors:

Lainey Wilson's Triple-Crown Moment

A trio of artists honored reigning ACM entertainer of the year Lainey Wilson in winning the triple crown and the milestone award. First up, Terri Clark honored Wilson with a version of Wilson’s “Hang Tight Honey.”

“You wrote a lot of words there, Lainey,” Clark quipped. Wilson appears on Clark’s recent album, Take Two . Dolly Parton appeared via video to congratulate Wilson on earning her Triple Crown Award, saying, “You know I will always love you,” while Post Malone surprised the audience to honor Wilson.

“This guy right here is a part of country music,” Wilson told the crowd of Post Malone, before reflecting on her time working towards these milestones. “I got so many thoughts running through my mind. Terri Clark that was so cool and Dolly, thank you for the sweet words.”

She looked back at some of her career milestones, from her first shows in Louisiana and her early days in Nashville, to having her first sold-out show: “I don’t think the milestones ever end, and I’m believing and receiving that it don’t. Every night at my shows I get to crown someone cowgirl of the night and that means… recognizing what makes them special and making them feel they can do anything they want to do. And that is what y’all have done for me. Thank you for helping me make my dreams come true… Wow, have those 13 years paid off here in this town.”

Keith Urban Celebrates Songwriter Jessie Jo Dillon

Jessie Jo Dillon, the daughter of country music songwriter Dean Dillon, has written over 900 songs, including hits such as Jelly Roll’s “Halfway to Hell” and Megan Moroney’s “Girl in the Mirror.” She was tributed by fellow singer-songwriter Brandy Clark, while Keith Urban performed a stripped-back, soulful rendition of “Messed Up as Me,” which Dillon wrote with Shane McAnally, Michael Lotten and Rodney Clawson.

“We strive to cut to the heart of the matter and make real music for real people,” Dillon said, and thanked her music publishing family at Big Machine Music, as well as supporters at Big Machine Label Group.

Dillon also took the opportunity to plead for songwriters to be paid justly: “We are not being fairly compensated for our works… what about the [future] Dean Dillon that moved to town and can’t make enough to stay here? We have to save the music, y’all.”

Vince Gill, Ashley McBryde Honor Tony Brown

Tony Brown’s multi-faceted career includes time in Elvis Presley’s TCB band, Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band, and time spent as a producer shaping the sounds that would define ’90s country music, through his production work for artists including George Strait, Reba McEntire and Vince Gill. He has eight ACM Awards, including wins for producer of the year. He also served as a top exec at MCA Nashville before co-founding Universal South Records in the early 2000s.

Strait sent in a video congratulating Brown, before Gill and McBryde teamed up to perform the first song Brown produced for Gill back in 1989, “When I Call Your Name.”

“A drummer once told me the song was so slow I should count it off with a calendar,” Gill quipped before performing the song, with McBryde offering a sterling, husky harmony. The crowd gave them the first standing ovation of the night.

Lee Ann Womack, Fisk Jubilee Singers Honor Shannon Sanders

Shannon Sanders, who serves as executive director, creative at BMI, was celebrated with the ACM Lift Every Voice Award. Sanders serves on the ACM board of directors, as well as chairing the ACM Lifting Voices Council.

Womack is known for her traditional country bona fides, but she also offered up some country soul during the ACM Honors, by honoring Sanders with a rendition of “Home,” alongside the Fisk Jubilee Singers, making for a soaring, powerful performance.

“I stand before you tonight deeply humbled and immensely grateful,” Sanders said in accepting the accolade — thanking his family, the Academy of Country Music, BMI, Nashville Music Equality and others who are “amplifying underrepresented voices in country music. Let this voice serve as a reminder to us to lift every voice and lift every story.”

Eric Church Offers a Soulful Take on an Alan Jackson Classic

Country Music Hall of Famer Jackson has earned 26 Billboard Country Airplay No. 1 hits and is a co-writer or sole writer on most of those. During the ACM Honors, he was celebrated with the ACM Poet’s Award and was honored by Eric Church.

“Alan Jackson is an institution and an American treasure. It’s my honor to be here and play for him,” Church said, also offering up a story about at one time being on the road with another country music luminary.

“I was touring with Hank [Williams], Jr. and every night he would play ‘Family Tradition.’” Church recalled that after he tried putting his own spin on the song, “Hank tolerated me for about 30 seconds and he pulled his glasses down and said, ‘Brother, don’t paint on the Mona Lisa.’ So tonight I’m going to try to paint around the Mona Lisa, okay?”

Church performed a slowed-down, soulful rendition of Jackson’s 1990 hit “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow,” drawing the night’s biggest response and earning an immediate standing ovation from the crowd.

Walking onstage with his wife Denise, Jackson himself praised Church for his unique rendering of the song, and accepted the honor — thanking fans for their support over the years, and expressing how his love of songwriting has been the center of his career.
