After 23 hair pin bends comes the cloud caressed peaks of majestic Nelliyampathy hill at about 4600 feet above the sea level. Nelliyampathy is a tiny hill station from the town of Nenmara in Palakkad district. Nelliyampathy had its hills rich with coffee, tea and orange plantations.

The journey to Nelliyampathy itself is amazing with gooseberry trees on either side of the road and the cool refreshing air. As the journey continues one can see the flashes of the Pothundy Reservoir. If you look out the dense forest offers you the blissful sight of several animals like elephants, bison, Langur and deer.

1. Pothundy Reservoir

3. Mampara Peak

Nelliyampathy have few peaks offering amazing views. Raja's Cliff at Mampara is one such breathtaking place. Situated at 5249 feet above Sea level Mampara is accessed by a forest path. This amazingly steep point is the best place to view the reservoir and other attractions around.

Nelliyampathy, often known as 'poor man's Ooty' is a favourite among travellers for its evergreen forests. It beckons visitors with shola forests and grasslands in the Western Ghats adjacent to the Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary.

On the route to Nelliyampathy lies Pothundi dam, the first earthen dam in India. Thereafter, motorists should negotiate 10 hairpin bends on the path between Pothundi and Nelliyampathy.

The hillocks of Nelliyampathy, which fall in Palakkad district, are a sight to behold when they are covered with mist. They range from 467m to 1,572m above sea level and are ideal locales to enjoy the greenery.

The toponymy of Nelliyampathy is interesting. 'Nalli' refers to a goddess in the ancient religion practised by local farmers and 'pathy' translates as 'place.' There are several other 'pathys' in the eastern region of Palakkad district – Vadakarapathy, Eruthempathy and Ozhalapathy, among others.

Among the most beautiful spots in Nelliyampathy is Anamada, which offers a veritable visual treat to people who love the wild and forest streams. Where to go

There are several interesting spots towards the east as well as west of Nelliyampathy. They include Seetharkundu, Kesavanpara, Padagiri, Pothupara, Palakapandy, Mampara, Thookkupalam, Pullukadu, and Victoria-Lilly tea gardens, among others.

1. Seetharkundu

Monsoon is not the ideal time to enjoy a ride negotiating the hair-pin bends which start right after the check-post. At every curve, one may run into a land slip. But a careful drive gives an unmatched experience – it is best to keep the speed at 40-50 kmph to enjoy the scenery of the forest up to Ayyappanthitta. There is a temple at the spot where the residents of Nelliyampathy used to make offerings in the past. According to them, the area is part of an elephant path and is also frequented by leopards. Another attraction of Ayyappanthitta is an amazing view of the sunset.

From Ayyappanthitta, the topography of Nelliyampathy changes abruptly. On the right side of the path is a deep gorge, while on the left is a very thick forest. Elephant herds often stroll along the track. It is best to take the early morning KSRTC bus from Palakkad to Nelliyampathy to sight elephants at Ayyappanthitta.

The path ahead virtually presents different geographies after every curve. At one place, there are centuries-old trees. Some distance ahead is the first junction on the road to Nelliyampathy called Kaikatty. The road deviates from here to the right leading to Manalaro tea estate. To the left is the Nelliyampathy town. The road ahead is to the Poabson tea gardens and the Seetharkundu beyond it.

Among the various attractions at Nelliyampathy, the 'star' is Seetharkundu. It is the best view point which offers a panoramic sight of Kollengode. There is a waterfall at the spot which gave its name to the view point. According to local legend, Sri Rama reached Nelliyampathy with Sita Devi during his travels in the forest. It is believed that Sita took a dip in the pool below.

Seetharkundu is at the edge of the Poabsons' tea estate. Parking space for tourist vehicles is available near the tea sales outlet. Seetharkundu is barely 500 m from here. From the view point, a bird's eye view of the Kollengode panchayat spreads itself before visitors. Houses, grasslands, paddy fields, trees, rivers, and roads are visible as if on a map. Seetharkundu is similar to Ramakalmedu in Idukki which offers a panoramic view of Kambam and Theni in Tamil Nadu.

2. Kesavanpara

The road from Kaikatty to Manalaro tea estate goes straight to Karadipara. A path in front of the AVT tea factory leads to the forest. This is the route to Kesavanpara, another view point in Nelliyampathy. The attractions of the place are steep hills, valleys, and other picturesque spots. A cool breeze blows here always. A unique feature of Kesavanpara is a waterhole which does not dry up even during severe summer. It provides drinking water to wild animals.

3. Karadipara

The next destination on the route is Karadipara. The path is through the Victoria and Lilly tea estates and the scenery resembles Munnar. There are small houses and big trees all along the road. Koonampara is a junction along the path. Beyond it is the Nooradipalam. The hanging bridge can be seen ahead, which is the main attraction of Karadipara. Visitors to the place will be blessed with the sight of the great hornbill.

4. Chinganchira

Karuppa Swami is the 'Kiratha' form of Lord Siva. He is worshipped at Chinganchira in Kollamkode panchayat, which lies on the eastern part of Palakkad. Hundreds of devotees offer prayers at the shrine every day. A huge banyan tree which spreads its roots all around and a pond provide an ethereal experience.

How to reach

One can take a train or a bus to Nelliyampathy but the best way to explore this place is to drive by your own.

Nearest Railway station: Palakkad station lies nearly 60 km from Nelliyampathy. Take a taxi or a bus from the station to the required destination.

If you are driving

To reach Nelliyampathy, one has to take the road starting from Nenmara that proceeds to the Pothundy Dam. There are about 10 hairpin bends that have to be negotiated on the way to Nelliyampathy.

Where to stay

Nelliyampathy town is a small junction lined with a row of shops and tiled houses. Notices saying 'rooms for rent' hang from the entrances of most houses. There are three rather big lodges in the town as well.

Privately owned hotels and resorts are located at various points, as one goes up the hills of Nelliyampathy. The bio-farms located here are a major landmark as one proceeds up before reaching the topmost point at Palagapandi Estate. The estate has a quaint bungalow, built during the British rule in India, and has now been converted into a private owned resort. At Kaikatty, a community hall is available, which is usually used as a base by those interested in trekking.

Though there are numerous scenic locales, most visitors are eager to capture the pictures of wild beasts like deer, bison, wild squirrel and wild boar on their cameras. However, the star inhabitant of the Nelliyampathy hills is the great hornbill.

The main attraction of Nelliyampathy town is the farm of the agricultural department, popularly known as 'Orange farm.' Visitors can feel and soak in the sights of the orange trees, passion fruit trees, and other fruit-bearing trees. In addition are numerous flowering plants typical to cold climates. Nestled between the Nelliyampathy ranges of Kerala and Anaimalai Hills of Tamil Nadu, Parambikulam Wildlife sanctuary is situated near a reservoir having aquatic fauna, including Mugger crocodiles. It is made up of the Sungam Forest and Parambikulam Forest Reserve.

The various tributaries of Kuriarkutty and Karappara Rivers flow through the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve covering an area of 285 sq. Km. The Adivasi communities of Kadar, Muduvar, Malasar and Malamalasar reside in this sanctuary.  

The Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is home to a wide variety of fauna consisting of nearly 39 species of mammals, 1049 species of insects & 61 species of reptiles. More than 124 species of butterflies, 47 species of fishes and 16 species of amphibians are also found here. The Indian Tiger, Nilgiri langur, Elephants, Leopards, Sloth bears and Sambar are some of the commonly seen animals in this sanctuary. 

The 268 species of birds found here include birds like grey-headed fishing Eagles, great black Woodpeckers, Nilgiri wood Pigeons, black-capped Kingfishers and Hornbills. The sanctuary is home to reptiles and amphibians like the common Asiatic Toads, King Cobras, wrinkled Frogs and the Western Ghats Flying Lizards. This sanctuary abounds with wildlife and rare flora. An astounding range of 1432 species of plants which include 359 species of trees, 268 species of shrubs & 152 species of climbers can be found here.

Centuries earlier, the Kachamkurissi shrine was situated deep amid a forest, in a land called Gnanaranyam- the Forest of Understanding.  

Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of the temple & the idol is said to have been consecrated by Sage Kashyapa himself who was doing penance at the Govindamala hill. Kachamkurissi is derived from ‘Kashyapan-Kurissi’ – ‘the Hill of Kashyapa’. The best time to visit is the Thiruvonam Nakshatra day during Onam.

Raja’s Cliff View

Picture perfect vistas welcome you to Raja’s Cliff Viewpoint, one of the best places to see in Nelliyampathy ! Situated at an altitude of nearly 5250 ft above sea level, the cliff offers jaw-dropping views of mountain ranges, reservoirs, waterfalls and forests in and around Nelliyampathy.

1. Mayiladumpara

Peacock will be seen abundantly in Mayiladumpura, making its name almost perfect that translated into meaning ” the rock in which peacock danced” in local language Malayalam. The Choolanoor Peacock Sanctuary situated at this place is the natural habitat of beautiful majestic peacocks that are facing extinction. Peacocks in South India have the most colourful and radiant quills among all the peacocks in the world. Choolanoor Peacock Sanctuary in Mayiladumpara is located at about 30 km from Palakkad town, and plan your visit early in the morning as you have a higher chance of observing the Peacock dance.

2. Pothundi Dam

Pothundi Dam is a non-concrete core dam constructed with an unusual mixture of jaggery and quick lime core. Pothundi dam was actually built across two tributary rivers of Ayalar rivers, namely Meenchadyppuzha and Padippuzha. This is only the second dam in Asia constructed without using cement mixture and the dam is the main source of irrigation and agricultural work in the Palakkad district. When you reach the top of the dam through the walkway, you can see the breathtaking view of Nelliyampathy Valley on the left side of the Dam and the greenery of paddy fields on the right side of the Dam. This place is definitely one of the best places to visit for Nelliyampathy Sightseeing.

The British constructed the Pothundi dam in the 19 century, 17 km from Nelliyampathy. It is the second dam built with an unusual mixture of jaggery and limestone.

Several movies have picturized scenes at the Pothundi dam for its breathtaking view.

The scenery from the top of the dam is spectacular. You get to see the valley and green irrigated fields together looking like a picture postcard.

3. Seetharkundu View Point

A viewpoint called Seethargund is situated 8kms away from Nelliampathy. Seethargund, according to beliefs is the place where Lord Rama, Laxmana, and Seetha rested during their exile and is among the cultural and historic Nelliyampathy Tourist Places.

Seetharkundu’s viewpoint is 8 km from Nelliyampathy hills. According to legends, Lord Ram, Laxmana, and Goddess Sita rested here during their exile. It is believed she took a dip in the pool. Seetharkundu has cultural and historical significance.

The viewpoint offers a panoramic view of Kollengode, hills, valleys, and waterfalls.

The spellbinding view of the Seetharkundu waterfall is sure to amaze you. The Seetharkundu waterfall originated from 100 m high. The waterfall joins River Gaythripuzha. If you enjoy trekking and hiking, you will love the view of the falls from the Seetharkundu viewpoint.

4. Kesavanpara

Kesavanpara is another stunning viewpoint in Nelliyampathy. You will enjoy the view of the steep hills and valleys from the spot. Kesavnpara has a perennial waterhole, which does not dry up even in the summer. The watering hole is an important source of water for wild animals in the area.

5. Karadipara

The drive to Karidipara is beautiful, with tea plantations on both sides of the road. The hanging bridge is the main attraction at Karidipara. Bird lovers may get a glimpse of a great hornbill.

6. Parambikulam

Parambikulam has one of those wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala which restores your faith in preserving the rarest wild animals. Lion Tailed macaque, Leopard, Bear, Elephant, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet macaque, Nilgiri Tahr, Civet, Wild boar, and Spotted Deer are some of the inhabitants of this area. Parambikulam which is spread over 272 kilometres is aligned with reservoirs and dams, and also serves as an area for Teak plantations.

Visit this place if you want to get a sight of the oldest teak tree ‘Kannimari’ and also to know how it feels while lodging in a treehouse. Parambikulam sanctuary has been considered for selection as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was started in 1973.

Parambikulam is a tiger reserve and wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. There are some rare wild animals in the forests like the tiger, lion-tailed macaque, leopards, bears, elephants, Nilgiri Langur, and spotted deer. Parambikulum is a popular tourist destination. The sanctuary is famous for the oldest teak tree Kannimari.

7. Meenvallam Falls

To experience the view of a natural waterfall and take a dip in it, you can consider visiting Meenvallam falls which falls step by step from a height of 5 to 45 meters. The place has the most fascinating view of nature and can be considered as a relief from your busy schedules. More than 10 waterfalls are there in Meenvallam out of which only 2 are open to the public for sightseeing and you need to take a jeep from Kalladicode to which buses are available from Palakkad and Coimbatore. The best time to visit Meenvallam is just after the rainy season when the waterfalls will be full and entry is not allowed after 4’O clock.

To experience natural waterfalls be sure to visit the Meenvallam falls. The waterfalls have step-by-step falls from 45 ft to 5 ft. There are more than 10 waterfalls in the region, though 2 waterfalls are open to the public. Visitors need to take buses from Kallikode.

8. Chinganchira

Karuppa Swami is the form of Lord Shiva. Devotees worship him in the eastern part of Palakkad. Hundreds of devotees visit the temple every day. A huge banyan tree with roots spreading over a large area and a pond provide an ethereal experience.

9. Silent Valley

Silent Valley can be considered as the treasure house of much rare flora and fauna and is among the most ecologically diverse areas on this planet. There is a river called Kunti that flows through this national park This tropical rain forest is a perfect Nelliyampathy sightseeing place famous for sighting almost extinct Lion Tailed macaque. Silent Valley is preserved well by the authorities and it remains one of the magical gifts of nature.

The visit to the Valley and Kunti river will take only a day via Mannarkad from where Jeeps are available, and you can return back to Palakkad the same evening after visiting the park between 8 AM to 2 PM. Park is also called Indira Gandhi National Park after the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared this area as a national park that prevented the efforts of the Kerala State Electricity Board which wanted to build a dam across the Kunti river.

Silent Valley has a unique ecosystem. Visitors will love the large variety of rare flora and fauna in the region. The river Kunti flows through the region. The tropical rainforest is home to the rare Lion Tailed macaque.

Raja Cliff is an elevation of 5250 ft above sea level. You will be awestruck at the magnificent view of mountain ranges, reservoirs, waterfalls, and forests. The variety of flora and fauna adds to the beauty of the cliff.

How to reach Nelliyampathy Hills

Tourists wanting to visit Nelliyampathy can fly in from Coimbatore international airport. The airport is 67 km from Nelliyampathy hills. Coimbatore has excellent domestic and international connectivity. Several taxis available outside the airport will take you to the final destination.

Nelliyampathy has excellent road connectivity to most major cities in South India. Interstate private and government bus services operate from cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Bangalore. Tourists get mesmerized by the scenic route from Nenmara to Nelliyampahty.

The nearest railway station is at Pakkad 60 km from the hill station.

Palakkad is a major railway junction. It is well-connected to several cities in the country. Taxis are available outside the railway station to take you to Nelliyampathy Hills.

Taxis and cabs are available for local sightseeing. We recommend you hire an SUV given the rocky terrain. Some tourists prefer to hire a jeep for the day. You can always explore the hill station on foot.

Best time to visit Nelliyampathy

Tourists flock to Nelliyampathy throughout the year. The temperature is moderate throughout the year.

Temperatures in summer hover from 20 to 30 C, making it the perfect escape from the summer heat.

The hill station receives heavy rain during the monsoon. The monsoon lasts from June to September. The hills look magnificent in the monsoon and trekking enthusiasts enjoy exploring the terrain in the rains.

Nelliyampathy has a short winter from December to February. Winters are pleasant with temperatures ranging from 15 to 28 C. Tourists love flocking to the hill station in winters.

Nelliyampathy hills

Nelliyampathy is a very popular hill station in Palakkad district. Tourists ply up the hairpin curves to this stunning tourist destination in large number every day to savour the panoramic vistas they enjoy at various viewpoints of Nelliyampathy which is around 1500 metre above sea level.  And if there is an adventurer in you, Nelliyampathy, you’d find soon, is a launching pad to other destinations deep into the woods. The long and arduous trek to places like Manpara and Kambamala are all rewarding experiences. On the way to the destination, the first to catch your attention is the Pothundy dam at the foot of Nelliyampathy hills. Some of you who have come with your family won’t hurry, in climbing the hill hastily, for there are enough facilities to spend a whole day off at the dam site.

Nelliyampathy

Nelliyampathy is a popular hill station 60 km away from Palakkad in Kerala. It is surrounded by tea and coffee plantations and has excellent weather conditions. The journey to Nelliampathi itself is an experience.At an elevation of 1000 metres at the southern tip of the Palakkad gap, the Nelliampathi hills are known for their exquisite fauna. About 215 species of birds and 90 species of butterflies have been recorded in these hills. Some of the rare species of birds include Grey-breasted Laughing Thrush, Great Pied Hornbill, Jerdon’s Baza, Great Black Woodpecker, Oriental Broad-billed Roller, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Broad-tailed Grassbird and Nilgiri Pipit. Primates including Lion-tailed Macaque, Bonnet Macaque and Nilgiri Langur are seen here. A small population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr is also seen in the grassy peaks.on the way to Nelliyampathy we can see an irrigation dam named as  Pothundi Dam , which provides water for the rice fields in the surrounding area. The dam is at the foot of the Nelliyampathy hills. From here, the road winds up for the next 17 km, with many  hairpin turns  on the way. Immediately after Pothundy dam, comes the government forest, where one can see massive teak trees. The road is very narrow and requires a  skilled driver  behind the wheel. On the way, one can see wild animals like monkey, deer and porcupine. The view of the Pothundy dam from the height is a breathtaking sight. There will be many waterfalls by the roadside during the rainy season.

The only route is from Nemmara, from where the first town of Nelliyampathy, namely Kaikatty junction, is at a distance of 26 km. There are many places worth seeing near Kaikatty. One such place is Kesavanpara, which offers a panoramic view of the land below. The tea producer A.V.Thomas & Company has a large tea garden under its Manalaroo Estate nearby. Manalaroo Estate is  the highest yielding Tea estate in India . One can buy fresh tea from their garden outlet in their factory. The Orange and Vegetable Farm, run by the Government of Kerala has its office and farm near Kaikatty. The Farm sells squashes and jams of fruits like pineapple, orange, passion fruit and guava. Vegetables like brinjal, bean, chilly and spinach are also sold. Further ahead, there is another tea garden and factory owned by Veekay Tea Company under its Chandramala Estate. All the tea and coffee plantations were originally started by the British. These were later on sold to the natives. The British were very conscious and responsible about the ecology of the area, utilizing the natural resources and only what was absolutely necessary.

The houses built by the British for themselves and their managers were constructed taking into consideration, the cold climate of the region. The walls and floors are wood lined to provide insulation, with fireplace to provide heating. They also maintained good gardens in front of these houses.

Another famous tourist attraction is the Seetharkundu. It is believed that Rama, Lakshmana and Sita of the epic Ramayana had lived in the place and Sita used to offer worship with the water from a small stream. This is the Seetarkundu, which can be viewed from the top of the mountains. At a distance, the  Chulliyar dam , the  Meenkara dam  and the town of Kollengode can be seen.

Even though the place is far away from the town, there is excellent communication facility provided by the Telephone exchange of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ). The telephone exchange is of the latest digital technology, connected to the outside world by optical fiber cable. A mobile network tower has been installed with phone network coverage throughout the ghat sections. The ghat road which was very narrow and scary is being widened. The workers in the plantations are mostly of Tamil origin. They are provided with labor quarters consisting of four to five units in one line, ‘padi’ in local language. Manalaroo Estate runs a school and a hospital for the workers and their children.

At Kaikatty, there is a government run guest house with boarding and lodging facility. Reservation for lodging can be made in advance. Both vegetarian and non vegetarian foods are available.
