It’s the start of a new week, and for many of us, it’s the start of a new week of working from home. A few weeks back, Star Trek released a series of official Zoom backgrounds for you to use in your video meetings, and now Star Trek Online have followed suit as well!

In a blog post , Star Trek Online shared a series of 16 high-quality shots from the game, perfectly suited to use as backgrounds in your next all-hands meeting. Star Trek Online said of the images, “Captains - are those video conference calls we’re all doing too many of in need of some spicing up? Don’t call from your living room anymore call from the Final Frontier. [...] Take charge of your meetings from the bridge of the Enterprise, or show a little hard-fought peace from the world of New Romulus. Don’t video call for the job you have, video call for the job you want.”

In addition to the Enterprise bridge(s) and New Romulus, the backgrounds also feature Admiral Quinn’s office on Earth Spacedock, the Great Hall in the First City on Qo’noS...and a variety of other starship bridges to choose from.

The spread of the coronavirus has forced many people to work from home and communicate via virtual meetings on Zoom and other free video conferencing services . While it turns out that virtual meetings are about as exciting as real-life meetings ( unless you’re planning to play games with your friends ), Zoom does offer one amusing advantage that makes them more exciting: customizable virtual backgrounds.

As far as the Zoom backgrounds available, there are tons of great ones to choose from, including more than a few backgrounds based on your favorite shows and movies. It’s actually possible to upload just about any background you want, but to get you started, we’ve highlighted some of the best geeky backgrounds that we’ve found around the internet.

Before we dive into the background, here’s a quick breakdown on how to upload a custom background image to Zoom:

• Go to the Zoom app’s settings menu.
• Choose the Virtual Background option on the left.
• Click on the Plus icon on the right side of “Choose Virtual Background”
• Upload your desired background image file from your device.

Game of Thrones, Westworld, and More From HBO

HBO got in on the Zoom background game fairly early on with this collection of favorites from the premium network. The Silicon Valley and Sharp Objects backgrounds are surprisingly subtle and all-around awesome, but nobody is going to blame you if you choose to sit on the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones .

It’s slightly disappointing that HBO didn’t dive deeper into its catalog for these official backgrounds, but you can always make a custom image that lets you address your co-workers from the front of a New Jersey pork store or the Gem saloon.

The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and the Pixar Collection

The Pixar collection is not only instantly recognizable, but the crystal clear visuals of the best Pixar movies happen to make them the perfect candidates for Zoom backgrounds.

Thankfully, Pixar has already posted an official collection of backgrounds for your amusement. You can’t go wrong with The Incredibles background , and the Toy Story cloud wall background also works shockingly well for just about any situation.

Just be careful using that Up background. Times are tough enough without having to remind people of that movie’s opening minutes.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, and the Rest of the Fox Animated Lineup

Few networks have access to as many iconic animated series as Fox does, so we were thrilled to find that the Fox team has sent out some quality official images for your custom background.

The Simpsons couch is an obvious winner here that just about everyone will be able to appreciate, but we’ve got to send some love to those Bob’s Burger backgrounds. It’s just a shame you can’t change the name of the daily special on the chalkboard.

If only there were background images devoted to the many cancelled Fox series over the years. We need some Fastlane back in our lives.

DC Comics Is Offering Everything Awesome

We’re not going to get into a whole DC/Marvel thing right now, but we’ve got to give a special shout out to DC for offering some of the best looking official Zoom background images of any major company.

These animated stills are not only stunningly well-drawn, but they offer a variety of creative background scenarios that will instantly set you apart from your Zoom friends. I mean, just take a look at that awesome Gotham by Gaslight -style background. You also have to love the Fortress of Solitude options, which not only look great but are oddly appropriate right now.

Marvel Lets You Zoom into the MCU

Not to be outdone by the competition, Marvel posted a few official Zoom backgrounds on its website that offer you the chance to sit in front of a few different corners of the Marvel universe.

The bulk of these selections feature the MCU films, which is honestly pretty hard to complain about. Granted, it’s a limited selection of options, but the fact you get a few options from the colorful Thor: Ragnarok is good enough for now.

The two comic-style options are also pretty great, but we need some quality X-Men backgrounds ASAP.

Star Wars Millenium Falcon (and Pretty Much Everything Else)

Since it doesn’t seem like the Star Wars team has entered the Zoom backgrounds arena yet, you’re left relying on the many fan-made backgrounds that have already been created.

We’re particularly fond of the Millenium Falcon image you see above, which is not only clean and recognizable but also feels natural for conferencing purposes. We also highly recommend finding a way to put yourself in the Jedi High Council room or Emperor’s throne room. The cockpit of the Millennium Falcon is another good one.

These are the folks at the bridge stations who aren't in the opening credits. They're the assistants to the main characters. M'Ress is a Caitian officer with a seat on the USS Enterprise bridge, created for Star Trek: The Animated Series when Star Trek 's jump to animation meant that the aliens in Star Trek were no longer restrained by what the makeup department could physically create. As the first Caitian in Star Trek , M'Ress sets the standard for the feline alien species , later echoed by Star Trek 's other animated Caitian, Dr. T'Ana (Gillian Vigman) in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Like many background characters, M'Ress' cool character design is a top reason for her appeal, but M'Ress earns her spot on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise by being a capable officer. M'Ress' duties as relief communications officer include communication within the Enterprise as well as to outside vehicles, along with scientific duties as situations arise, similar to the duties of primary communications officer Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols).

Lt. M'Ress appeared in 2 episodes of the "anything but canon" animated web series Star Trek: very Short Treks, voiced by Cristina Milizia.

Lt. T'Veen (Stephanie Czajkowski)

When Vadic (Amanda Plummer) commandeers the Titan in Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8, "Surrender" , T'Veen is one of the Titan bridge officers used as leverage against Vadic's request for Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). At this point in Picard , the Titan's crew are painted as candidates for a potential spinoff show, but Lt. T'Veen's shocking death at Vadic's hand sends the message that no one is safe.

Serving on the USS Enterprise-D with Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) is Gomez's dream job, and the chocolate-covered Captain isn't going to earn her any high marks. La Forge recognizes Gomez's talent as an antimatter specialist, and helps Sonya focus, despite the gaffe.

Lycia Naff makes a triumphant return to Star Trek as Captain Sonya Gomez in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 10, "First First Contact", commanding the USS Archimedes with the same compassionate focus on problem-solving that La Forge had as Gomez's mentor. Captain Gomez's story is proof that Star Trek characters do learn from their earliest mistakes , and can come out on top in the end.

Mr. Mot (Ken Thorley)

In an interesting twist, Mr. Mot is a barber working on the USS Enterprise-D, and happens to be a Bolian, a species that has no hair of their own. Nonetheless, Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) says that the civilian Mot is the best barber in Starfleet . There's more to being a barber than just cutting hair, after all, and Mot's listening ears are available to anyone who comes to sit in his barbershop chair, as long as they don't mind receiving a little free advice on the side.

The Bolian barber became an entrepreneur.

After providing excellent service to the crew on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mot grew even more successful. The Bolian barber became an entrepreneur, which is evident by the presence of Mr. Mot's Hair Emporium as one of the many businesses in Stardust City, on the planet Freecloud, as seen in Star Trek: Picard season 1, episode 5, "Stardust City Rag".

Bolians are named for Star Trek director Cliff Bole, who directed a total of 42 episodes between his work on Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager .

Boothby's influence on the USS Voyager crew was evident in Star Trek: Voyager season 5, episode 4, "In the Flesh", when a Species 8472 leader took on the guise of Boothby in a Starfleet Academy simulation, instead of a high-ranking Admiral.

Sometimes, Boothby's advice is harsh, as was the case with Jean-Luc Picard as a Starfleet Academy cadet. But in the end, Boothby always has an uncanny sensibility for knowing exactly how to cultivate the best forms of both botanical specimens and future Starfleet officers.

Lt. Kayshon (Carl Tart)

Lt. Kayshon has the honor of being the first Tamarian in Starfleet , debuting in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, episode 2, "Kayshon, His Eyes Open", as the USS Cerritos' new security officer. The Tamarians, first seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 2, "Darmok", have a puzzling metaphorical language reliant on background knowledge of Tamarian culture. The Tamarian phrases from "Darmok" have been adopted by Star Trek fans as a fun way to signal our fandom to each other, so it makes sense that a Tamarian officer should show up on Star Trek: Lower Decks , itself a celebration of Star Trek 's own weird and wonderful moments.

Kayshon spends more time in the background after his first episode, still part of the USS Cerritos' security team. The years between "Picard and Dathon at El-Adred" and Kayshon's assignment to the USS Cerritos in Star Trek: Lower Decks mean the communication gap between Kayshon and the rest of the USS Cerritos' crew is much smaller than it might have been in the past. Kayshon communicates in Federation Standard, but still slips into Tamarian metaphor from time to time, which just adds new phrases to the Tamarian lexicon.

Dr. Migleemo (Paul F. Tompkins)

In Dr. Migleemo, Star Trek: Lower Decks continues the tradition that was established with Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) on Star Trek: The Next Generation by having a counselor aboard the USS Cerritos . Strictly speaking, Migleemo is not the galaxy's best counselor , with a whole plateful of food metaphors that don't always land butter-side-up, but Migleemo's heart is always in the right place.

As a bird-like alien of an unspecified species, Dr. Migleemo's character design pays homage to Star Trek: The Animated Series , since a bird man in a tweed suit may not translate that well to live action, but works perfectly for animation.

Even though Migleemo is bad at his job, it's in a way that's not actively harmful, but makes you want to root for him, just like any other lower decker on the Cerritos. Sometimes Migleemo gets it right , after all, like counseling Ensign D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) in the senior science officer training program in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 3, "Mining the Mind's Mines".

Nurse Alyssa Ogawa (Patti Yasutake)

Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) usually has assistants in the background of the USS Enterprise-D's sick bay, and one of these, Nurse Alyssa Ogawa, is a regular background character starting in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4. Ogawa grows as a character over the course of TNG 's final four seasons , receiving a full name as of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 18, "Cause and Effect", and developing as a character through Ogawa's casual conversations with Dr. Crusher about Alyssa's dating history.

Nurse Ogawa gets more to do when Ogawa is one of the four USS Enterprise-D junior officers at the heart of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, episode 15, "Lower Decks" , focusing on the friendship between often-overlooked characters. Ogawa's story focuses on Alyssa's relationship with Lieutenant Andrew Powell, and culminates in their off-screen engagement.

After Star Trek: Discovery 's time jump , Linus takes a little more time to understand the new 32nd-century technology, but he's never admonished for catching up to the learning curve. Instead, Lt. Linus is accepted as someone whose needs are a little different to most human officers'.

Morn is a fixture in Quark's Bar from the start of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the perennial barfly occupying the same seat at the end of the table. According to the other patrons at Quark's, Morn rarely shuts up, but the joke is, of course, that Morn is always cut off before delivering any speaking lines. Instead, the picture of who Morn really is slowly comes together through other people's comments and conversation about Morn, with the speculation about Morn's true identity finally coming to a head in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 6, episode 12, "Who Mourns for Morn". Morn's apparent death is a blow to the community and all who knew him, but also reveals surprising facts about DS9 's Morn , like Morn's secret riches and tactical mind, confirming that there was more to the enigmatic Lurian than Morn's signature bar stool.

True to form, Morn is seated at Quark's Bar when the USS Cerritos visits Deep Space Nine in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 6, "Hear All, Trust Nothing".

Global Screen , the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam . The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.

“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.

The film stars an established South African cast which includes Morné Visser (“The Kissing Booth 1,2,3”), well-known comedian Rob van Vuuren (Netflix series “Ludik,” “Slumber Party Massacre,” “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,” “The Mauritanian”), Trix Vivier (“Trackers,” “Legacy”), Maurice Carpede (“The Kingdom”), Camilla Borghesani (“Roxy”) and newcomer Leah Lindeque.

Durban-born Adam, whose background includes commercials, music videos and documentaries, has quickly emerged as one of South Africa’s leading young talents since moving into feature films. His first feature as DOP, Apartheid political thriller “The Last Victims” (2019) was recognized with over 20 awards at international festivals including a best cinematography nod at the RapidLion Film Festival, also known as the South African International Film Festival. Adam also recently directed and served as cinematographer for one episode of “Stories of a Generation – With Pope Francis,” the Netflix docu-series that features Martin Scorsese.

Global Screen’s Martin Schneider describes “The Trek” as the kind of special elevated genre cocktail today’s buyers are always on the hunt for: “The film is an innovative blend of historical thriller, survival horror and supernatural elements that draws on authentic Southern African lore and history as well as its unique Kalahari Desert setting. The story also incorporates the complex themes at the forefront of today’s cultural conversations, especially the dark legacy of racism and colonialism.

“Meekaaeel has established himself over the last years as one of South Africa’s best DOP’s and now one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming directors. His story-centric approach to shooting and commitment to visual storytelling make him the perfect fit for this special genre project. In terms of Meekaaeel’s precision and the visceral nature of his filmmaking, we are reminded of movies like ‘Bone Tomahawk’ by S. Craig Zahler and directors who craft gripping, multilayered genre films with substance as well as scares, like Karyn Kusama or Jeremy Saulnier, also a DOP turned director.”

Adam commented: “The key conflict that the film explores is the oldest one of them all: the struggle over land. Our family of settlers, whose arrival tips the natural balance, are put on a brutal collision course with forces that are bound to protect the land at any cost. Both sides in this conflict stand to lose everything and there’s a feeling of inevitability as each step on their journey strips them of more of their humanity. I think this speaks to the loss of innocence that the colonial project brought about and the importance of looking back so as not to let history repeat itself. A partner like Global Screen – who understands the weight of this story – is indispensable in allowing ‘The Trek’ to be seen by genre and film lovers far beyond South Africa.”

Faithful to South Africa’s multilingual history, the film is majority English language, but also features dialogue in Afrikaans and Khoekhoengowab, a now endangered language that makes heavy use of click consonants.

“The Trek” was written by James C. Williamson, J. Hannah Massyn and Sandulela Asanda. Williamson’s 2020 festival hit “Fried Barry” played Sitges, Fantasia and L’Étrange Film Festival and found distribution in over 70 countries, including deals with Shudder and ShowMax.

“The Trek” will also feature original music from Haezer, one of South Africa’s top electronic musicians.

“The Trek” is currently in post-production and expected to launch at a major film festival in the second half of 2024. The film is produced by Williamson for The Department of Special Projects and Warren Gray for Resistance Pictures in co-production with Alto Media (South Africa), Resistance Pictures (Cape Town), and Sternenberg Films (Germany). It is supported by South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry and National Film and Video Foundation.

“The Trek” reflects a growing focus on genre content for Global Screen, part of the Telepool Group, best known for its expertise with animation, family entertainment and prestige drama. Global Screen’s foray into elevated genre includes the Sandra Hüller led nightmare-thriller “Sleep,” a debut feature by Michael Venus in which the Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated Hüller plays a woman plagued by horrific dreams, which become a never-ending nightmare haunting an entire village community.

Recent genre titles handled also include “You’re Not Me” (Tú No Eres Yo) by Goya-nominated producers Marisa Crespo and Moisés Romera, a Spanish-language satirical thriller, which launched at Fantastic Fest in Austin, before having its international premiere at Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam.

Inga Leschek Named RTL Deutschland Content Chief

MGM+ Joining Prime Video Channels In India

More collaboration between Amazon’s content operations here: Prime Video and MGM International have teamed to launch the MGM+ streaming service in India. MGM+ will be made available through Prime Video Channels for ₹599 ($7.17) a year for Prime members. The move will be seen as Amazon’s latest attempt to push into the lucrative Indian retail market. Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, recently said India is  driving more Amazon subscriptions  than anywhere else, bar the U.S. A recent Prime Video slate comprises nearly 70 films and TV shows.
