7 Top Sundarban Tour Operators and Packages

There are many Sundarban tour operators that offer different types of package tours to the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal. Most are predefined group tours with fixed itineraries and can either be day tours, overnight, or multiple nights with set accommodations included. You will be picked up from Kolkata and dropped back there and can either stay aboard a boat or on land. Hotels and resorts also provide their guests with tour packages.

Help Tourism Sundarbans Jungle Camp

Help Tourism specializes in purposeful, eco-friendly travel to natural areas in east and northeast India. The organization has its own "resort", the Sundarbans Jungle Camp on Bali Island, and boats for river cruises. The resort was built in partnership with locals to provide them with a livelihood and reduce tiger-human conflict. Its six comfortable, ethnic thatched cottages with modern attached bathrooms are located on the banks of the Bidya river. Locals are all employed in the running of the resort and as guides.

Tour packages of various lengths from two to four nights are available. Expect to pay around 40,000 rupees for a private three-day package for two people. This includes transport from Kolkata, accommodations, all meals, boat cruises, naturalist and local guide, park entrance fees, village experience, and country boat ride. Special birding tours are also possible. Bookings can be made through the Help Tourism website, although unfortunately, it's not very user-friendly.

Tour de Sundarban

Tour de Sundarban (also known as Backpackers) has its own exclusive purpose-built accommodations and boats as well. The solar-powered Eco Village, located on Satjelia island, has 20 mud cottages with attached western bathrooms, hammocks, and a community center for travelers to hang out in. The company was founded by three "brothers" (they are actually an uncle, nephew, and cousin), who were so inspired by a visit to the Sundarbans that they decided to start taking other people on trips there.

Their tours are most suited to energetic, adventurous and sociable people, who are not looking for luxuries—but rather a village feel, fun ambiance, and value for money. The accommodations are rustic and local transport, including ferries and rickshaws, is used (which is all part of having an authentic experience).

Two and three-day packages are offered, as well as day tours. Their rates include transport, accommodation, Bengali food, permits, boat safari, village walk, and evening performances from local musicians. Expect to pay 5,500 rupees per person for two night, three days. There is an option to spend one night on the boat. Tours are usually limited to 15 people. One-day tours are possible for groups of four or more. The cost is 3,000 rupees per person.

Sundarban Chalo

Sundarban Chalo is another tour company, run by a group of four brothers, that provides budget backpacker-style tours to the Sundarbans. The tours are similar to those offered by Tour de Sundarban. The main difference is the accommodations, which are non-exclusive. Guests stay in basic cottages at a "resort" in Pakhiralay on Gosaba Island, near where the main market is. Again, don't expect luxuries or resort-style facilities. The tour includes a sunset at the Sundarban Bird Jungle, local village walk, and visits to Hamilton Bungalow and Rabindranath Tagore Bungalow. Sundarban Chalo also operates a day tour from Kolkata. The price for group tours ranges from 2,800 rupees per person for one day, increasing to 5,300 to 6,800 rupees per person for three days. The company conducts the tours using its own boat, built in 2015.

Sundarban Eco Tourism

Based in Gosaba, at the entrance to Sundarbans National Park, Sundarban Eco Tourism is popular with domestic Indian tourists. The company has been in business since 2015 and offers reasonably priced tour packages ranging from one to three days. The tours depart from Kolkata, and guests can opt to travel either by train (the cheapest way) or car. Expect to pay 2,600 rupees per person for a one-day package by car. A three-day package by car costs 5,000-7,000 rupees per person, depending on the number of jungle safaris. Accommodations are provided in decent budget hotels in Pakhiralay.

If you'd prefer to stay on a boat rather than on land, and you're looking for a private and personalized tour experience with a touch of luxury, check out Sundarban Houseboat. The unique boat has been specially designed and renovated to provide inviting classy hotel-style accommodations. You won't need to sacrifice comfort to stay on this boat. There are three bedrooms, all with attached western bathrooms, that can accommodate groups of 14 to 25 people in total. Facilities include air conditioning, flat screen TVs in all rooms, living and dining room with sofas, kitchen with gourmet chef, sun deck with loungers, library, games, and movies.

Packages are available for a duration of one to four nights (or more, on request!), visiting various watchtowers, islands, and villages. The boat can be hired exclusively, or on a per room basis. Rates vary according to guest requirements. Book as far in advance as possible because it is popular!

Vivada Sundarban Cruises

Another option for a luxury Sundarban cruise is aboard Vivada's M.V. Paramhamsa. This huge cruiser has four decks with 16 state cabins of 165 square feet and, 10 state cabins of 135 sqaure feet, as well as a sun deck, bar, restaurant, coffee shop, and massage parlor with steam and sauna room. The boat sails to the Sundarbans weekly from Kolkata, with three-night packages available. Day trips and excursions along creeks are organized in a smaller vessel, and there are numerous opportunities for village visits. Cultural programs also take place in the evenings on the boat's sundeck. Rates start from around 50,000 rupees per person for three nights.

West Bengal Tourism

Government-owned West Bengal Tourism operates popular one-night and two-night budget cruise packages to the Sundarbans, staying aboard their boats. The organization has two large cruisers, Sarbajaya (the better of the two) and Chitralekha. The one-night tour package includes visits to Sudhanyakhali, Sajnekhali, and Dobanki watchtowers. The two-night package includes an additional visit to Jhingakhali watchtower.

What you need to keep in mind when booking these tours is that the boats can not travel through the more narrow waterways due to their large size. Being restricted to wide waterways means less chance of wildlife sightings. Plus, these are group tours with up to 50 people. Expect to pay around 6,500 rupees per person for two nights.

Day 1: Transfer from Kolkata - Sundarban ( Sonakhali / Gothkhali )

8-30 AM: Pick up from Kolkata.

11 AM: Arrival at Sonakhali / Gothkhali (Here the road journey ends and the thrilling boat cruise begins).

11.30 A.M: Departure by our mechanized boat for Pakhirala. Tea/Coffee with biscuits will be served on the boat. There will also be a Briefing and Interpretation about the Sunderbans during the boat journey.

1.30 P.M: Lunch.

3.30 P.M: Departure by boat for Pakhir Jungle famous for different types of birds like Curlew, Wimbrell, Red sank, Pond heron, Asian Pied Starling, Large Egrets, Lesser Adjutant Storks, Sandpipers, Cormorants etc. and fabulous Sun SetPoint.

About Sundarbans National Park

The Sundarbans is the largest single block of tidal mangrove forest in the world. The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering parts of Bangladesh and the Indian State of West Bengal. These mangroves have a substantial tiger population in a distinct ecological setting. These forests have salt water crocodiles, estuarine and marine turtles and a number of bird species. Besides tiger, the reserve has fishing cat, spotted deer, and rhesus monkey, wild pigs and myriad birds.

The Sundarbans are isolated with no forest connection to other tiger-occupied forests on main land. Hence, there is heavy biotic pressure for forest resources. On average 500 quintals of honey and 30 quintals of wax are collected each year by local people under licence from Forest Department. The habitat is traversed by many narrow tidal channels forming small to large islands. Tigers frequently cross these islands in search of prey and man-tiger interactions are common.

By Air : The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport (Kolkata – CCU). It is only 75 kms away from Sonakhali Jetty Ghat. The travel time is approximately 2 hrs. 45 mins.

By Rail : The nearest railway station is Canning which is only 17 kms. away from Sonakhali Jetty Ghat. The travel time is only 35 mins. You can reach Canning by train from Sealdah Railway Station (Kolkata) or by road. The most convenient way is to travel by local train from Sealdah to Canning which takes roughly 1 hr. 10 mins.

By Road : We usually pick up our guests from P C Chandra Garden (Gate No. 1) which is just opposite to Science City (Kolkata). The drive from Science City to Sonakhali Jetty Ghat is 2 hrs. 30 mins. and is barely 70 kms. away.

2. When is the best time to Visit Sundarbans?

Ideally November to March is a very good time to visit the Sundarbans. This is because the temperatures are pleasant and one can enjoy the views of many birds and animals. You may find a salt water crocodile sunning itself on the river banks in the winter months. Crocodiles are cold blooded animals and need the energy of the sun to increase their body temperature. Birds are also very common during these months.

During the summer months, one can spot deer, monkeys, crocodiles, birds and specially tigers. During summer months the movement of the big cats like tigers increase and they frequent the banks of the canal for water and prey. During the rainy season visit to Sunderbans are best avoided totally. Boat or Cruise Packages are also to be avoided due to storms/heavy rain.

We offer two types of Sundarban Package itinerary for you. Please go through the details.

Sundarban package for 2 nights 3 days day to day itinerary.

Day – 1

We will start our journey at 8.00 AM towards Godkhali from Kolkata. During the journey, refreshments are offered. At around 11 AM, we will reach Godkhali or Gothkhali Jetty where the road journey ends. From there we will take a boat to Gosaba Island or Dayapur Island that will take around 2 hours.

At around 1.15 PM, we will reach our Camp at Dayapur Island. Here we will get tented accommodation with various modern amenities. Lunch is served in this tiger camp. After a little rest, we will start for the Sunderban Bird Jungle that will be followed by mesmerizing sunsets. Enjoy an evening cup of tea or coffee in the boat and then return to the cottage. The folk dance by local people along with light snacks is quite refreshing. Finish your dinner at 8.PM. The restaurant here serves international as well as local cuisines as per request.

Day – 2

At around 6 AM a cup of hot tea is served in the room. This energizes for the whole day trip.

We will depart for the boat cruise that will help us to enter inside the largest mangrove forest, the bay and the islands of the Sunderban Tiger Reserve area. Here some of the animals like the crocodile, wild boar, snakes, water monitor lizard, spotted deer, and several varieties of birds can be seen. The main attraction is, of course, the Royal Bengal Tiger, but that depends upon mere luck. The boat will then take us to the 5-river junction point where the Bengal Gulf can be seen. Here we will take a short walk through the forest to reach the watchtowers. We will visit 3 watchtowers in this period of time namely Sudhankhali, Dobanki, and Sajnekhali. Breakfast will be served in the boat.

At lunch (around 1.30PM), we will enjoy a delicious platter. To interact with the local people, we can take a walk around the neighbouring villages with typical Sunderban arrangement where we can see how these local citizens coexist with the tiger and other wild terrors. In the evening, we will come back to our camp after an entire day adventurous boat ride. After returning, enjoy your evening tea or coffee along with snacks in your room and relax.

Enjoy wildlife movie or Bonobibi Yatra (play) by local artists. Finish your dinner by 8.30 with lip-smacking cuisines made from locally available ingredients.

Day – 3

At 6.00 AM Start the last morning of the trip, with a cup of tea. After completing breakfast, we will leave for a birding tour to Netidopani watchtower. During the walk amidst the local villages, we can get some local honey collectors and get a chance to know their life story, about Bonobibi or the Goddess of the forest, etc. Then a guided adventure journey by manually oared country boat and a short journey to DoBanki watch tower for canopy walk are in our list.

At 1.30 PM, we will have our lunch in the boat, they will visit the Hamilton Bungalow and Rabindranath Tagore Bungalow by boat and finally return to our Camp. From here we will take you to Godkhali, where our representative will be present to transfer you back to Kolkata in the evening.

Sundarban Package for 1 Night 2 Days Day to Day Itinerary

8.00 AM: We will pick you up from Kolkata at around 8 AM and start our journey by an elite vehicle to drive to Godkhali Jetty, where the road journey ends. From there, we will reach by country boat, operated by the motor to the camp resort at Dayapur Island. We will pass by the rivers like Gomar, Durgaduni, Hogil, and Gumdi during this boat voyage. Keeping your luggage in the room, we will start our water trip. In this trip, we have to take forest permission before starting the cruise.

1.30 PM: This is lunch time and we will have our lunch inside the boat. Our journey will be forwarded towards Sunderban National Park. The Sajnekhali watchtower is the destined location wherefrom we will get the view of the wildlife present here.

In the evening, we will return to the resort or camp after the sun sets and mesmerizes us with its amazing beauty in the mangrove forest. Here in the resort, you can either enjoy the Bonbibi Pala, a folk dance by the local artists or just relax in your room.

8.30 PM: Local cuisines can be enjoyed in dinner with the ingredients available locally. Ample rest is necessary for the next day trip.

6.00 AM: With a cup of hot tea, amidst the greatest mangrove surrounding, the morning starts. This is the time to get ready for the cruise through the narrow creeks and rivers of the Sunderban National Park. We will reach the watchtower Sudhanyakhali. This is a sweet water pond that attracts varieties of animals and we get a chance to view them from secure quarters. Your breakfast will be served in the boat and then our trip will start for boat safari. The narrow creeks and the canals of the Sunderban Tiger Reserve welcome us with amazing thrilling experience at every turning. The largest mangrove can be viewed from the close proximity with our tour guide. Diverse ranges of wild animals, birds, reptiles can be seen in the tour and if luck supports, we will get a glimpse of the famous ‘Royal Bengal Tiger’.

1.30 PM—Lunch will be served in the boat after which our journey starts for Godkhali at 2.30 PM. After reaching Godkhali, our Sunderban trip ends and our representative will transfer you back to Kolkata in the late evening.

Today, in the morning, get transferred to the Millennium Park Jetty. In the afternoon, the cruiser will start sailing along the beautiful river Ganges towards the south. Take delight in the serene views of the river Ganges as the cruiser passes through various heritage sites. After a few hours of cruising, the cruiser will anchor at Namkhana, a fisherman’s cove and entrance to Sunderbans.

Early morning, the cruiser will start sailing towards the east wherein guests have a chance to experience the lifestyle and culture of the local fisherman. After you enter Sunderbans, take a glimpse of the dense mangrove followed by a short excursion to Lothian Island or Crocodile project at Bhagabatpur. Later, the cruiser will anchor at the confluence of the River Malta and River Bidya. Later, enjoy visiting some exotic islands- Nethidopani, Dobanki and Sajnekhali via small creek boats and witness mangrove species and exotic wildlife.

Today, following an early morning breakfast, take an excursion to Bali followed by a visit to the Sunderban Village to witness the daily lifestyle of local people. The natives of this village are quite friendly and welcome visitors with warmth and geniality. Besides, guests will also visit some exotic sites followed by anchor for overnight stay.

Today, after breakfast, sail back to Kolkata by cruising through the confluence of the rivers-Rupnarayan and Damodar. En-route, you will cross the ancient port of Diamond Harbour and the industrial town ‘Haldia’. Post breakfast; disembark the cruiser followed by direct transfer to the airport by afternoon.

At 4:00 PM, embark on a boat ride to Sundarban Bird Jungle, followed by a briefing.
Return to the hotel by 6 PM.

Day 2 - Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve’s guided Jungle Safari

Late Morning:

On the way, the boat will stop at Dhangmari / Chandpai Forest station. Take the permit & pay the fees and take 2 forest armed guard then visit Harabia Forest Office. The cruising will continue till Kotka upon arrival.

2nd. Day: Very early in the morning take the small boat for cruise through the small canal for bird watching trip inside forest. Back to the ship and take breakfast then walk through the Mangrove forest and climbing the watch tower to Jamtala sea-beach for sunbath, back to ship then the boat will resume its journey towards the Forest which will continue till Kochikhali.Upon arrival, the accompanying Guide will lead you towards the Kochikhali Forest Office, where you will find plenty of deer, Monkey, birds etc. Back to the boat, snacks will be served. On this evening, Bar-B-Q dinner will serve. Our vessel will start in the evening journey to Dhangmari/Chandpai forest office upon arrival and stay overnight.

3rd. Day: After breakfast we will visit the Karamjal forest office and resume its journey towards Khulna. On the way, Take a stopover for surrender forest permission and get down arms guard. We shall reach Khulna in the evening. End…………..
