Protests related to the situation in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip

Since October 17, 2023, protests have been taking place throughout Türkiye due to the ongoing situation in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Some protesters have targeted and vandalized popular Western-branded businesses and foreign diplomatic missions in Ankara, Istanbul and Adana, especially those of the United States and Israel. The protests have led to confrontations between protesters and security forces, road closures and traffic disruptions.

Additional protests at various locations cannot be ruled out and could pose a risk to your safety, regardless of your nationality.

Turkish authorities have employed enhanced measures to respond to demonstrations, including:

  • deploying additional security forces
  • using crowd dispersal methods

If you are near an affected area:

  • exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings at all times
  • expect heightened security measures
  • avoid all demonstrations and gatherings
  • follow the instructions of local authorities
  • plan and use alternative routes

Armed attacks

Turkish authorities remain on alert following armed attacks in Istanbul at the Italian Santa Maria Catholic Church on January 28, 2024 and the Caglayan Courthouse on February 6, 2024.

If you are in Istanbul, you should:

  • exercise increased caution
  • expect a heightened security presence
  • monitor local media

Local elections

Local elections are scheduled to take place throughout Türkiye on March 31, 2024. Disruptions, including violent ones, can occur before, during and after the elections.

You should allow extra time to reach your destinations and leave an area immediately at the first sign of any security disturbance.

If you are in Türkiye:

  • Exercise caution
  • Avoid areas where large gatherings are taking place
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid crowds
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for the latest information

Border with Syria

Extremist groups have carried out attacks at border crossings and other locations in Syria close to the Turkish border. The Turkish government has declared some areas in villages along the border with Syria special security zones as part of cross-border military operations. Expect a heightened military presence and movement restrictions in these areas.

The security situation remains unpredictable.

  • Exercise extreme caution
  • Review your security measures regularly
  • Monitor these events very closely

Southeast region

Terrorist groups have launched deadly terrorist attacks against Turkish security personnel in several cities and regions in the south and southeast of the country.

  • Remain vigilant
  • Monitor local and international media

There is a risk, particularly to foreigners, of kidnapping in the area (see Kidnapping, below). Maintain a high level of vigilance at all times.

Avoid overland travel. If you must, drive during the day and stay on major roads. Don’t use public transportation.

There is an ongoing threat of terrorism from domestic and international terrorist groups in Türkiye. Many attacks have occurred throughout the country. Although most have occurred in the south and east, some also took place in major cities like Istanbul and Ankara.

Attacks have targeted:

  • Turkish military and government facilities
  • places of worship
  • tourist attractions and popular public places
  • nightclubs and entertainment venues
  • public transportation

Further attacks may occur, and terrorists may also target:

  • crowded places
  • places with high pedestrian traffic and where foreigners may gather
  • commercial establishments
  • local government offices
  • public transit stations
  • busy streets
  • long queues at tourist attractions

Turkish security officials may set up roadblocks or close streets when they receive reports on specific threats. It is common to have a proactive police presence.

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times in public places
  • Avoid large crowds
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities at all times

Mountaineering and hiking

Mount Ararat, between the eastern provinces of Agri and Igdir, is designated a special military zone. You must hire the services of a locally licensed guide agency if you intend to hike in the area. A licensed company will obtain the necessary permits and assign you a registered Mountaineer to accompany you throughout your hike.

If you intend on engaging in mountaineering or hiking:

  • never do so alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • ensure that you’re properly equipped and well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary, including when you expect to be back to camp
  • know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal
  • obtain detailed information on trekking routes or ski slopes before setting out and do not venture off marked trails

Accurate information on mountain conditions can be difficult to obtain. Weather in mountainous areas can also be unpredictable.

Identification

Random ID checks and ‎roadblocks may take place in large cities and on intercity roads.

Cooperate during ID checks and always carry your passport and visa or residence permit. Failure to produce these documents or non-compliance with Turkish officials during identity checks could result in fines, detainment or deportation.

Turkish authorities have detained and prosecuted large numbers of people over social media posts criticizing the government, state officials, president, military operations, etc. You could be subject to scrutiny if you posted similar comments, even if a post was published years ago or outside of Türkiye.

  • Keep in mind the sensitivities
  • Think twice before posting or reacting to online content criticizing the government
  • Restrain and limit your social media footprint

There is a threat of kidnapping-for-ransom along Türkiye’s borders with Syria and Iraq. Extremist groups take advantage of porous borders and an unpredictable security situation to carry out operations and use kidnapping as a means of raising funds.

They may target the local population, foreigners and even foreign aid workers.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations may occur. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, can occur throughout Türkiye.

  • Avoid showing signs of affluence
  • Ensure that your belongings, passports and other travel documents are secure at all times
  • If travelling by car, keep valuable belongings out of sight, windows closed and doors locked

Muggings, assaults and sexual assaults occur.

Spiked food and drinks

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances. These items may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery. Do not accept food and drinks from strangers, even if the wrapping or container appears intact.

Don’t go to down-market bars and neighbourhoods. One scam, particularly common in Istanbul, involves locals inviting tourists to bars for food and drinks and then forcing them to pay a steep bill.

Don’t accept letters, parcels or other items from strangers. Drug traffickers sometimes attempt to convince foreigners to deliver packages and messages into and out of Türkiye.

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:

  • pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
  • use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

If you’re travelling to Türkiye to meet someone you’ve only met online, or the person in Türkiye asks to wire money, you may be the victim of a scam. Don’t send money to someone you have never met in person.

Overseas fraud

Women’s safety

There is a risk of sexual assault.

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment and verbal abuse. Be aware of your surroundings.

Dress conservatively, especially in areas outside major cities and coastal resorts.

Advice for women travellers

Stray animals

There are numerous stray dogs and cats in Türkiye. Dogs often travel in packs and could attack pedestrians and joggers.

Don’t attempt to feed or pet stray animals.

Road safety

Türkiye has a modern road network. However, uneven surfaces and poorly marked lane changes near construction zones, are common.

Exercise caution, especially when driving in the rain. Severe weather conditions may seriously affect road conditions.

Ensure that your vehicle is in good repair. Avoid driving after dark outside of major cities or major roads.

Accidents are common. You may face the following hazards when driving in the country:

  • reckless driving
  • vehicle breakdown due to poor maintenance practices
  • dangerous road conditions
  • inadequate lighting
  • poor signage
  • high-volume traffic congestion

If you come across an accident, don’t slow down or stop to observe.

If you are involved in an accident, lock your doors and windows and call 112 to notify the police.

Don’t move your vehicle until advised to do so by the police, even if your accident results in:

  • blocked traffic routes
  • injuries to those involved
  • a disagreement
  • a crowd starting to form

You may be permitted to move your vehicle after communicating with the police if you are on a busy road, once you have taken pictures of the scene.

Although pedestrians officially have the right of way, it may not be the case in practice.

  • COVID-19 and International Travel - 13 March, 2024

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is not required to enter this country.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.

* It is important to note that country entry requirements may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a risk in some areas of this destination. It is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It is spread to humans by the bite of infected ticks or occasionally when unpasteurized milk products are consumed.

Travellers to areas where TBE is found may be at higher risk  during April to November, and the risk is highest for people who hike or camp in forested areas.

Protect yourself from tick bites . The vaccine is not available in Canada. It may be available in the destination you are travelling to.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a viral disease that can cause fever, pain and bleeding under the skin.  In some cases, it can be fatal.  It spreads to humans through contact with infected animal blood or tissues, or from the bite of an infected tick.  Risk is generally low for most travellers.  Protect yourself from tick bites and avoid animals, particularly livestock.  There is no vaccine available for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Human cases of avian influenza have been reported in this destination. Avian influenza   is a viral infection that can spread quickly and easily among birds and in rare cases it can infect mammals, including people. The risk is low for most travellers.

Avoid contact with birds, including wild, farm, and backyard birds (alive or dead) and surfaces that may have bird droppings on them. Ensure all poultry dishes, including eggs and wild game, are properly cooked.

Travellers with a higher risk of exposure include those:

  • visiting live bird/animal markets or poultry farms
  • working with poultry (such as chickens, turkeys, domestic ducks)
  • hunting, de-feathering, field dressing and butchering wild birds and wild mammals
  • working with wild birds for activities such as research, conservation, or rehabilitation
  • working with wild mammals, especially those that eat wild birds (e.g., foxes)

All eligible people are encouraged to get the seasonal influenza shot, which will protect them against human influenza viruses. While the seasonal influenza shot does not prevent infection with avian influenza, it can reduce the chance of getting sick with human and avian influenza viruses at the same time.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Medical tourism

Medical tourism is common in Türkiye. Canadian travellers have had serious health complications following surgeries abroad. The Turkish government recommends that all travellers seeking medical services select healthcare providers authorized by the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Before leaving for medical travel, you should do your research, especially on:

  • the health and financial risks
  • medical facilities performing the intended procedure
  • language barriers, which can lead to misunderstandings about your medical care and conditions
  • travel insurance that includes coverage for the type of medical procedure you will be undergoing

The Turkish authorities established the HealthTürkiye online portal, which provides information to foreigners about medical tourism in Türkiye.

You should discuss your medical plans with your primary healthcare provider in Canada before travelling.

  • Make sure that the healthcare providers you choose are authorized by the Turkish health authorities.
  • Ask to see the credentials of the healthcare providers
  • Obtain a written agreement detailing the proposed treatment or procedure.
  • Receiving medical care outside Canada
  • If you become sick or injured while travelling outside Canada or after your return
  • Authorized healthcare providers  - Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye (In Turkish)
  • International Health Services Call Center  - Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye
  • HealthTürkiye – Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye

Medical services and facilities

Modern medical care is available in major cities but may not be in remote areas. Immediate cash payment is often required.

Most provincial and territorial health care programs are extremely limited in the coverage offered abroad.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Universal health coverage

Foreigners with residency permits must register for universal health coverage under Turkish Social Security (SGK). Although Canadian citizens are exempt, you may enroll if you have no other coverage and you have been a resident in Türkiye for at least one year.

Universal Health Insurance  - Türkiye's social Security Institution

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad .

Authorities can request to see your ID at any time. If you fail to present valid identification documents upon request, you could face:

  • deportation
  • entry ban for future travel into Türkiye

During your stay:

  • carry the original version (not only photocopies or digital versions) of a valid government-issued ID, such as your passport, at all times.
  • keep a digital copy of your ID and travel documents in case it is seized or lost
  • follow the instructions of the local authorities requesting the documents

If you are temporarily in Türkiye, you should carry a valid passport that contains a Turkish entry stamp and a valid visa.

If you reside in Türkiye, you should carry your Turkish resident ID (Kimlik and/or Ikamet) and a valid passport that contains a Turkish entry stamp and a valid visa.

  • Restrain/limit your social media footprint.

Online activities

Turkish authorities have detained and prosecuted people over social media posts criticizing the government, state officials, president, military operations. You could be subject to scrutiny even if a post was published years ago or outside of Türkiye.

Authorities have also targeted people and groups for:

  • publishing statements
  • organizing news conferences
  • organizing or participating in nonviolent activities
  • critical writing and online activism protesting the government, its policies, decisions and actions

Even if a case does not go to trial or ends in acquittal, people can be labelled as terrorism suspects and face adverse consequences due to investigations and criminal proceedings, including possible loss of employment and social exclusion.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Türkiye.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Türkiye, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Turkish court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Türkiye to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

Dress and behaviour

Islamic practices and beliefs are closely adhered to in many parts of the country.

In all places of worship, women should cover their head with a scarf and all visitors should cover their arms and legs.

  • Dress conservatively, especially in areas outside major cities and coastal resorts
  • Behave discreetly
  • Respect religious and social traditions to avoid offending local sensitivities

In 2024, the lunar month of Ramadan is expected to begin on or around March 10.

In public, between sunrise and sunset, be discreet when:

The currency of Türkiye is the Turkish lira (TRY).

Earthquakes

In February 2023, severe earthquakes struck several provinces in southeastern Türkiye resulting in tens of thousands of casualties and significant damage to critical infrastructure, buildings and private houses. There are reports indicating that most of the affected local populations live in temporary shelters or settlements awaiting reconstruction.

The authorities revoked the state of emergency on May 9, 2023. Recovery work is underway, but the situation remains precarious in the following southern provinces affected by the earthquakes:

If you are in the affected area, you can expect:

  • continued telecommunication and electricity disruptions
  • frequent aftershocks
  • limited food, water and hygiene options
  • limited accommodations
  • extremely limited transportation options from the disaster area

If you are planning to travel near an affected area despite this advisory:

  • monitor local media for the latest developments

Avoid non-essential travel to the provinces affected by the earthquakes as our ability to provide consular assistance to Canadians in that area is severely limited. If you need assistance, call the Embassy of Canada in Ankara: 90 (312) 409-2700.

Türkiye is located in an active seismic zone. Landslides are possible in affected areas, and strong aftershocks may occur after the initial earthquake.

Earthquakes - What to Do?

Severe rainstorms occur in various regions around Türkiye, especially in the Black Sea region and coastal areas. Heavy rainfall can cause severe flooding and landslides, resulting in extensive damage to infrastructure and hampering the provision of essential services in the affected areas. Roads may become impassable and bridges damaged.

Droughts and snowstorms can also delay travel and disrupt essential services.

Forest fires often occur during the summer months, particularly in provinces on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Türkiye.

The air quality in areas near active fires may deteriorate due to heavy smoke.

In case of major fire:

  • stay away from the affected areas, especially if you suffer from respiratory ailments
  • follow the instructions of local authorities, including evacuation orders
  • monitor local media for up-to-date information on the situation

Canadians can now visit Turkiye for 90 days without a tourist visa

Canadians can now visit Turkiye without a tourist visa (Pexels/RIDVAN AYRIK)

Turkiye has lifted its visa requirements for Canadian tourists hoping to visit the country for 90 days.

Previously, visitors from Canada had to pay $US60 to enter, Turkiye’s Ottawa embassy told CTVNews.ca. After being approved, they would have a 180-day window to visit.

The changes were announced in the Turkish Official Gazette on Dec. 23, and apply to tourists arriving from the U.S., Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Canada. Turkiye’s embassy said the change took effect for Canadians on Dec. 26.

The policy shift follows a decree signed by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan as part of an expansive arrangement with the European Union.

While visas are no longer required for Canadian tourists, work visas, business visas, student visas and medical visas are still mandatory.

“If you are travelling to Turkiye and need a visa, use the official Turkish government site to apply online and purchase an e-visa before entering the country,” the government of Canada explains on their website. “Be cautious of third-party websites that offer help in getting any type of visa, as they charge additional fees to provide information and submit applications for you.”

Visitors who hope to work or study in Turkiye must obtain a visa at the Turkish embassy or consulate prior to entering the country.

To qualify for a visa-exempted entry for a 90-day period, Canadians must be located outside Turkiye for a minimum of 90 days before they can re-enter for an additional 90 days.

As explained on Turkiye’s electronic visa application system , “respective Turkish officials at the ports of entry reserves the right to deny entry into Turkiye to a holder of an e-visa without any explanation.”

Updated Visa Information to Turkey, 7.04.2022

NATIONALS OF ALL OTHER COUNTRIES WHO ARE RESIDENTS IN CANADA AND FOR THOSE WHO ARE SUBJECT TO A CANADIAN TRAVEL DOCUMENT

Nationals Subject to Visa to Enter Türkiye.

In order to determine whether you need a visa to enter Türkiye please click here. (http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa)

E-Visa Application

Citizens of some countries have the possibility to obtain their entry visa online (e-Visa). If you are subject to a visa to Türkiye , you may be eligible for e-Visa. Please click on www.evisa.gov.tr to check out whether you are eligible for e-Visa or not.

If you are a citizen of a country who is eligible for e-Visa, it is highly recommended to obtain your visa online. It is the quickest and easiest way to obtain the visa for touristic purposes. Applicants just need to log on to the mentioned web site, provide the requested information, and make online payment (after the application is approved) and download their e-Visa.

Please note that e-Visa is only valid for touristic and commercial purposes. Other purposes require different types of visas given by Embassies or Consulates.

e-Visa website is not operated by Consulates or Embassies. So all kinds of e-Visa issues should be directed to the e-Visa Call Center at +1 888 566 7656.

Holders of Canadian Travel Document (Blue Colour - 1951 Convention)

Holders of Canadian Travel Documents (Blue colour - 1951 Convention) cannot obtain an entry visa through the e-Visa system; regular visa must be obtained from the Turkish missions in Canada prior intended travel to Türkiye , regardless of the visa regime applied to country of citizenship.

Canadian travel document holders may be eligible to obtain an entry visa valid only for maximum 30 days.

Holders of Canadian Certificate of Identity (Grey Colour)

Since the Canadian Certificate of Identity is not accepted as a valid travel document, holders of those documents can not apply for an entry visa to Türkiye

Pre-Application System for Regular Visa Applications

An entry visa can also be obtained from the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa, the Turkish Consulate General in Montreal, the Turkish Consulate General in Vancouver or the Turkish Consulate General in Toronto valid for the requested number of days within 90 days.

As of January 5, 2016, all kinds of applications for Turkish visas will have to be made through the Pre-Application System online via www.visa.gov.tr and applicants must obtain an appointment. Accordingly all visa applications to Turkish Consular Offices must be submitted through this web portal. After having submitted and obtained an appointment, you are advised to be present at the Turkish Consular Office at least 5-10 minutes before the specified time. Take time before your visa appointment to ensure that you have all of the information required for the type of visa for which you are applying. Applicants must bring all of the documents they uploaded as hard copies including the application form, unprepared applicants may be required to reschedule their appointment. If the interviewing consular officer informed you that your visa has been approved and your case does not require any additional administrative processing, your visa will be issued in 5 to 8 weeks and will be sent to you with the prepaid envelope from Canada Post which you submitted during your appointment. Applicants with inappropriate uploaded documents may be turned away and may be required to reschedule their appointment.

Turkish Consulate General in Toronto’s area of jurisdiction covers the provinces of Ontario (except Ottawa with the National Capital District and its East), Manitoba and Nunavut.

Initial Application Documents

The following initial application documents are required from the nationals of all other countries and Canadian travel document holders:

* Application form

* Biometric photo

* Documents attesting to the income status of the applicant and inviting person, such as a bank letter, or bank statement (if you are not employed (student, housewife, etc.) provide proof of your spouse's or parent's employment and income)

* Hotel Booking or Invitation done by notary public in Türkiye (must include the name, address and telephone number of your host)

* Supporting document on the applicants commitment to return (land registry, business certificate, pay stub, bank account statement)

* A valid medical insurance for the duration of the stay

* A self-addressed prepaid return envelope from Canada Post (return envelopes from FedEx, DHL, UPS, Purolator and other courier companies are not accepted). Passports will only be returned by mail.

* Fee: CAD 77.00 (single entry) / CAD 241.00 (multiple entry) in cash or money order payable to "Turkish Consulate". Personal cheques are not accepted and the fee is non-refundable

Validity Period Requirements for Passports

Foreigners wishing to enter Türkiye should carry a passport (travel document) with an expiration date at least180 days (6 months) from their date of entry to Türkiye.

Process Time of Regular Visa Applications

We strongly suggest the application to be made two months before the planned visit to Türkiye. It takes 5 to 8 weeks for the visa to be issued.

Expedited Process is Non-Existent at the Turkish Consulate in Toronto

Since flight and hotel reservations are sufficient for visa applications, purchased flight tickets and hotel accommodations are not required. It is solely the responsibility of the applicant to purchase flight tickets, hotel accommodations or make other arrangements before obtaining a Turkish visa. Therefore purchasing flight tickets and/or hotel accommodations beforehand does not guarantee a Turkish visa.

Arrival to Türkiye

It should be acknowledged that the possession of a visa does not automatically entitle the traveler to enter Türkiye upon arrival at a port of entry. An officer at the port of entry will decide if you still meet the requirements for admission when you arrive. If there has been a change in circumstances between the dates of your application and your arrival to Türkiye, or if subsequent information is given which was not originally available to the visa office, you may be refused entry.

The validity of your visa will be indicated on your visa. If you overstay your visa, you might be asked to pay fines, deported or banned from future travel to Türkiye for a specific period of time.

Transit Traveler

Passengers coming to a Turkish airport and not leaving the transit lounge at the airport are not required to have a transit visa. In order not to face any difficulties at your departing airport, please make sure that your airline company knows this regulation prior your travel.

Cruise Passengers

Cruise passengers coming to a Turkish port by a cruise ship and leave Türkiye by the same cruise ship for another country are exempt from visa for a maximum period of 72 hours (with the permission given by the local security authorities).

Children under the Age of 18

Children under the age of 18 travelling to Türkiye without parents must have a notarized parental consent to travel from either both parents and their non-accompanying parent, as applicable.

Currently, 30 nationalities can obtain a Turkey e-Visa from the comfort of their homes. 21 nationalities can also obtain an e-Visa if holding a visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK or Ireland.

Many nationalities from the African continent that were previously eligible for e-Visas were unfortunately removed from that list recently. They will now have to apply for a Turkey visa through a Turkish mission or an agent.

Minimum passport validity to enter Turkey as a tourist

The passport validity is different for different nationalities. It also depends on whether you are visa-exempt or require a visa.

For nationalities that are visa-exempt, the minimum passport validity required is 60 days beyond your “allowed period of stay” in Turkey. For some, it’s 90 days.

For those who require an e-Visa, VOA or visa from the embassy, the minimum passport validity required is 6 months from the day of arrival. For some, it’s 3 months beyond the validity of their visas.

So in general, you will be fine with 6 months of validity remaining your passport at the time of entering Turkey.

Turkey transit visa requirements

Transit visas are NOT REQUIRED for transiting through Turkish international airports.

If you are not leaving the international transit area, then you do not require a transit visa. But if you have to leave the international transit area, or claim your bags, or change to a different airline, then you would require a transit visa.

Turkey visa requirements for cruise passengers

A Turkey visa is NOT REQUIRED for cruise passengers for up to 72 hours.

Cruise visitors are issued a Harbor City Entry Permit that’s valid for 72 hours and limited to the harbor city where the cruise arrived and its surroundings.

TURKEY VISA ON ARRIVAL

Turkey introduced its e-Visa system in 2013 with the intention of phasing out its Visa on Arrival. But VOA is still available and a few countries that are eligible for e-Visa are also eligible for obtaining VOA at international airports in Turkey.

Even though the e-Visa takes only a few minutes to apply, the VOA fee is considerably lower than the e-Visa fee for certain nationalities. It makes sense to simply get a VOA instead of an e-Visa if you are eligible and the fee is lower.

Validity of Turkey Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days, with multiple entries. Total stay cannot be more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

How long can you stay in Turkey with Visa on Arrival

Turkey Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days. That means, if you continue to stay in Turkey after you have obtained your Visa on Arrival, you can stay up to 90 days. But if you leave and come back, you can only stay until your Visa on Arrival expiration date.

Also, your total stay in Turkey cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Your arrival date in Turkey is March 10
  • You obtained VOA on March 10
  • Your visa is valid from 10 March 2022 to 08 June 2022 (90 days)
  • After 45 days, on 24 April 2022, you left Turkey.
  • You entered Turkey again on 19 May 2022 using your previous VOA. You can only stay till 08 June 2022, which is 21 days.

Visa on Arrival application process

The VOA process is quite quick at airports in Turkey. Right before the immigration or passport control, you will see a section called “Visa”. Stop by there and get your visa on arrival.

For obtaining VOA, all you need is your passport and visa on arrival fee in USD, EUR or GBP. Some nationalities require a passport-size photo.

Documents required

You must present the following documents.

  • Passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Turkey
  • Cash in USD, EUR or GBP for visa fee payment

The Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee starts from $30 and goes up all the way to $70 USD depending on nationality. Below is the Visa on Arrival fee for all eligible nationalities.

Processing time

It usually takes a few minutes for the Visa on Arrival process. But it depends on how busy the Visa on Arrival section is.

TURKEY E-VISA

Turkey e-Visa - Step-by-step guide

Turkey introduced its e-Visa portal in 2013 to help visitors obtain visas from the comfort of their homes. Today, 51 countries are eligible for Turkey e-Visa .

E-visa approval is immediate and it only takes 5 minutes to obtain the e-Visa.

Validity of Turkey e-Visa

The validity of the Turkey e-Visa is 180 days from the “arrival date” that you’ve selected in your e-Visa application.

E-Visas are either single-entry or multiple-entry depending on your passport. You must enter Turkey within the validity of your e-Visa.

E-Visa application process

Turkey e-Visa approval is immediate so there is no processing time. The application is quite simple, so it only takes about 10 minutes. You can pay the fee with a credit/debit card.

You will need the following documents.

  • Original passport
  • A valid visa from the US, UK, Ireland or Schengen (for those that require a supporting document)
  • A credit or debit card for visa fee payment

Turkey visa policy.

Turkey has an active visa policy that mandates every visitor from a foreign country to hold a visa before they can be allowed into the country unless they are citizens of visa-exempt countries. Visitors are expected to apply for visas from any of Turkey’s diplomatic missions abroad, online or at the airport if they qualify for a visa on arrival. Here are currently 98 countries on Turkey’s visa-exempt list and 28 countries on the electronic visa list. The consular and e-visas are issued indirectly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the goal of furthering the country’s migration goals.

Turkey Visa-Free Countries

If you are from a visa-free country or territory and have a valid ordinary passport, you can visit Turkey for business or pleasure for a short time. Eligible visitors may present only their passport or ID card for visits of 90 days within 6 months. Key Information About Turkey e Visa

Sticker Visas are no longer in use: For many years, sticker Visas were issued to eligible visitors, but that is no longer the case now as this electronic visa program has replaced sticker Visas. Rather than attach a sticker to your passport, the e-visa is electronically linked. Once you arrive at the airport, the officers will request your passport and the approved e-visa confirmation sent to you and will scan the passport biometrically to generate your e-visa. Traveling with the same passport you registered for the e-visa is important, not a different one.

Passport Validity:  It is important to reiterate that your passport must be valid for at least 60 days after your departure date. If yours will expire soon, consider applying for a new passport before submitting your e-visa application.

Use Within 6 months:  Once the e-visa is approved and released, you must use it within the next six months; otherwise, it will expire.

Apply Outside Turkey: You can only apply for a visa outside Turkey not while you are inside the country.  Even if you have a visa that is set to expire and would like to apply for a new one, you must leave first and apply while you are outside the country's borders.

For Air Travelers: E visas are for sir travelers only, and the airline you use may matter depending on your nationality. Some visitors from selected countries must apply to use Turkey or Pegasus Airlines only, while others, especially travelers from EU and EFTA countries, are free to fly with any airline of their choosing.

One Visitor Per Visa: Two persons cannot apply with the same application form nor can they visit with the same visa. There are also no group visas for touring groups. It is one person per visa;even minors need their own visas.

US and Canadian citizens no longer need a tourist visa to visit Turkey

Jordan Waller

Following a presidential decree, Turkey (also known as Turkiye) has lifted its tourism visa requirements for six new countries — including the United States and Canada.

The decree, signed by Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Dec. 22, has largely slipped under the radar. It was announced in the Turkish Official Gazette on Dec. 23 and applies to tourists visiting Turkey from the U.S., Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Citizens of any of these six countries can now spend 90 days in Turkey in any 180-day period without the need to apply for a travel visa.

The announcement comes as part of a broader effort by Turkey to improve international relations and travel accessibility.

Previously, visitors from the U.S. had to obtain an e-visa, which cost around $20, if visiting Turkey for tourism or trade purposes.

Curiously, while the new rules were announced Dec. 23, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Turkiye , along with the Turkish government's e-visa application site , both still flag that U.S. and Canadian visitors require an e-visa.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye confirmed with TPG that changes are in place, saying: "Visa exemption for citizens of six countries (USA, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman) had approved, these passport holders no longer need a visa, and they are exempted from visa 90 days within 180 days."

The changes have been updated on the U.S. Department of State — Bureau of Consular Affairs website .

Bottom line

Tourists from the U.S. and Canada no longer need to pay for a tourist visa to visit Turkey. The new changes permit travelers to freely visit the country for 90 days every 180 days without needing a visa.

Canada announces support for Turkish and Syrian temporary residents

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

As part of Canada’s response to the situation in Türkiye and Syria, the Government of Canada has been processing temporary and permanent residence applications from people affected by the devastating earthquakes on a priority basis, including applications for refugee resettlement. Now, we are also taking steps to make it easier for Turkish and Syrian nationals already in Canada to extend their stay.

March 18, 2023—Mississauga, Ontario— As part of Canada’s response to the situation in Türkiye and Syria, the Government of Canada has been processing temporary and permanent residence applications from people affected by the devastating earthquakes on a priority basis, including applications for refugee resettlement. Now, we are also taking steps to make it easier for Turkish and Syrian nationals already in Canada to extend their stay.

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced new immigration measures to support Turkish and Syrian temporary residents in Canada who may be unable to return home at this time due to the destruction caused by the earthquakes in the region.

Effective March 29, 2023, Turkish and Syrian nationals can continue to study, work or visit family by applying for an extension of their status free of charge. An open work permit pathway will be made available for Turkish and Syrian nationals already in Canada. These measures will make it easier for Turkish and Syrian nationals who wish to extend their temporary status in Canada and to move between temporary streams.

Recognizing that some permanent residence applicants have lost their travel documents as a result of the earthquakes, we will waive the requirement to hold a passport or travel document to be approved for a permanent resident visa to come to Canada. We are also making it easier for Canadian citizens and permanent residents from Türkiye and Syria to return to Canada by waiving fees for temporary passports, limited-validity passports or emergency travel documents, as well as Canadian citizenship certificates and permanent resident travel documents.

These new measures build on work already under way to prioritize overseas applications from those who have been personally impacted by the earthquakes. New and existing temporary residence applications from the affected regions, as well as permanent residence applications—including refugee resettlement applications—are all being processed on a priority basis. This includes visitor visa applications for immediate family members of Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents, so they can join their loved ones in Canada.

Canada is also working with UN partners in the area to provide temporary shelter for refugees in Canada’s resettlement process who have been seriously impacted while they wait for their applications to be processed. We will continue to closely monitor the needs of people in the region and will adapt our response as needed.

“Canada is committed to providing relief to those impacted by the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. We are already prioritizing the processing of applications from those affected and today we are introducing new measures that make it easier for Turkish and Syrian nationals to extend their stay in Canada and be with their families, while continuing to work and study in a safe environment. Our government will always stand ready to respond to emerging international crises and support those in need.” – The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
“Our government remains committed to supporting Turkish and Syrian nationals affected by the earthquakes. We know that many Canadians have family members who have been impacted by the earthquakes and today's measures should offer comfort to those Canadians. With these new measures, we hope to ease the hardship they’re currently facing by prioritizing overseas applications and making it easier for them to stay longer in Canada. We understand the challenges faced by those impacted by this tragedy and remain steadfast in providing support and relief during this difficult time.” – The Honourable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transport

Quick facts

As of February 8, 2023, there were close to 16,000 Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) clients with applications in progress in Türkiye and Syria. Of these, approximately 1,700 (750 permanent and 920 temporary residents) were from the area impacted by the earthquakes.

These measures will be in effect from March 29 to September 25, 2023.

More information about how to apply for these new measures will be available on IRCC’s website in the coming weeks.

As of February 24, 2023, Canada announced $50 million in humanitarian support for the earthquake response in Türkiye and Syria. This funding will help support a range of critical humanitarian activities and a timely, effective and coordinated humanitarian response in both Türkiye and Syria.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

It sounds crazy right, in the year of a pandemic with international borders closed and travel so restricted?

The reason is simple, the Immigration and Refugee Council of Canada (IRCC) have their processes and systems tuned perfectly, and the Express Entry System is the poster child for this. If you are interested in obtaining a Canada visa , to come and live, work or study in our great country, it’s not only possible, it’s a very achievable reality. Here's how to apply for a Canadian visa from Turkey.

How to Get a Canada Visa

Happy immigrants - Canada visa

So let’s consider the numbers. Through the Canadian  Express Entry System , 69,950 primary applicants and their loved ones have been invited to come to Canada. But, as you may know, this isn’t even the only way to start a new life in our country. The first thing you should do is familiarise yourself with some of your options . You can then look into applying, and if you choose the right Canada visa, you could be living in Canada in as little as six months.

Which Canadian Visa Program Should You Apply For?

Depending on a variety of factors such as your age, qualifications, skills, experience, family size, and intentions when you arrive in Canada. When looking at how to apply for a Canada visa from Turkey, it is important to select the right Canada visa program that will suit your unique profile to prevent disappointment. Some of the more popular immigration programs are:

Express Entry System

We already touched on this one as it is one of the most popular choices . This system is for qualified people with at least one year of experience working in their profession. There are three programs in the system for different types of professions, namely:

  • Skilled Worker Program - for people with experience and qualifications in managerial and professional roles. Examples include accountants, IT professionals, managers, architects, doctors, and engineers.
  • Skilled Trades Program - specially reserved for the qualified journeyman. Like in many first world countries, the trades are amongst the most in-demand professions in Canada. You will require authentication from a recognized body (such as a red seal) and at least one year of experience working as a tradesman. Popular skills urgently needed in Canada include mechanics, welders, carpenters, plumber, electricians, and pipefitters.
  • Canada Experience Class -this program is for applicants who are eligible for one of the two programs we just discussed and either already have at least one year of experience working in Canada or intend to work in Canada before applying to become a permanent resident. The experienced class is shown preference over the other two categories because the applicants have already shown that they are capable of living and working in Canada.

Provincial Nomination Program

If you have a particular province in mind or are willing to dig a little deeper into finding the right place for your skills and work field, the Provincial Nomination Program (PNP) is perfect. Each Canadian province and territory has its own PNP , and each of those has its own unique streams or visas for Canadian immigration. For example, the Nova Scotia Nominee Program has several options;

  • Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities - selects candidates from the federal express entry system who meet the needs of the provincial labour market to apply for a nomination;
  • Labour Market Priorities for Physicians - selects physicians from the federal express entry system who meet the needs of the provincial labour market to apply for a nomination
  • Physician Stream - assists the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the Izak Walter Killam Health Centre in the hiring and retaining of healthcare professionals through permanent residency in Nova Scotia;
  • Entrepreneur Stream - for experienced business owners or individuals with business management experience who want to open or buy and operate a business in Nova Scotia;
  • International Graduate Entrepreneur Stream - for recent graduates of a Nova Scotian university who want to start or buy a business in the province ;
  • Skilled Worker Stream - assists employers who want to hire skilled foreign workers and foreign graduates from Nova Scotian post-secondary institutions;
  • Occupations in Demand Stream - for people who work in intermediate skilled occupations that are in demand by the local labour market such as cooks, butchers, and truck drivers;
  • Nova Scotia in-Demand: Express Entry - selects highly skilled applicants who have a good chance of securing a job in Nova Scotia from the Express Entry pool; and
  • Nova Scotia Experience: Express Entry - selects highly skilled applicants who have been working in Nova Scotia for at least a year from the Express Entry pool;

If you know where you want to live in Canada, you can apply directly to the provincial government. If you are successful in your application you will receive a provincial nomination, which so long as you meet the eligibility criteria for the program you are applying to, guarantees your visa for permanent residency in Canada. Knowing how to apply for a provincial nomination from Turkey is what could separate you from all the other hopeful immigrants.

Pilot Programs

Immigrate to Canada-Newfoundland&Labrador

The Immigration and Refugee Council of Canada is continuously experimenting with different visa types to meet the needs of the Canadian labour market. For example, the four provinces of Atlantic Canada ; New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island are facing a shortage of both semi-skilled and skilled workers. As a matter of fact, they are facing a shortage of people, period. For this reason, the Atlantic Immigration Pilot was created to help address these shortages by allowing applicants with a valid job offer in Atlantic Canada to apply for permanent residency through this special program.

Another example is the Agri-food Immigration Pilot , a program that was created to address a serious shortage in the agricultural industry of Canada. The pilot makes provision for foreign workers with permanent contracts on the following occupations to become permanent residents of Canada.

There are more such pilot programs that can help you secure permanent residency and your Canada visa, you can learn more by following the link at the bottom of the page.

Israel-Gaza latest: Israel withdraws almost all ground troops from southern Gaza; Iran issues threat to Israeli embassies

Today marks six months since the 7 October attacks by Hamas that left more than 1,100 Israelis dead and prompted Israel's ongoing military operation in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 people. We'll be bringing you updates on this throughout the day.

Britain's support for Israel depends on it abiding by international humanitarian law, Lord Cameron said in a newspaper column today.

His warning to Israel follows an Israeli airstrike that killed seven aid workers, including three Britons.

"Our backing is not unconditional," Lord Cameron wrote in The Sunday Times.

He called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow more aid into Gaza as he said "the prospect of famine is real".

"As an occupying power, Israel has a responsibility to the people of Gaza," he said.

"We expect such a proud and successful democracy to abide by international humanitarian law, even when challenged."

An Israeli delegation will take part in the latest round of negotiations in Cairo, a government official has said.

The negotiations are aimed at reaching a truce in the war and a hostage release deal.

Hamas yesterday said it would also be taking part and sending a delegation.

Earlier, Israel said it would withdraw almost all ground troops from southern Gaza.

By Alistair Bunkall, Middle East correspondent

The withdrawal of Israeli forces is a significant moment in this war, but it might be too early to assess how significant.

Officially, it is to give troops time to recuperate after months of heavy fighting, although that doesn't explain why they haven't just been replaced.

Israeli officials are also saying operations in Khan Younis are over and there is nothing left to do. That's not entirely true, as some rockets were fired out of the city towards Israel hours after the soldiers left.

Although some forces will remain, predominantly patrolling the east-west corridor that divides the strip, withdrawing from Khan Younis concedes ground and surely makes a large-scale land invasion of Rafah unlikely, at least in the short term.

It could be linked to a hostage deal. Senior-level talks resumed in Cairo today, with Israel's intelligence chief David Barnea present.

Hamas had been demanding a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, something that Israel repeatedly rejected - could this partial withdrawal be a workable compromise?

Militarily, it signifies the shift to a new phase, the third phase in this six-month war. I would expect to see Israeli forces now operating in a counter-terrorism fashion, launching raids based on specific intelligence, rather than having an all-out continuous presence in much of Gaza.

The withdrawal of forces should create space for more humanitarian aid to move about Gaza - something that is desperately needed.

But without a 'day after' plan, it will possibly also create a security vacuum, which, as we've seen in northern Gaza, can lead to the return of Hamas cells.

If this truly is a new significant phase, the withdrawal of forces must be accompanied by meaningful progress in the political process otherwise any military gains Israel has made could be rapidly lost.

Amal al Taweel and Rola Saqer both gave birth in Gaza hospitals on 7 October - the day of the Hamas attacks that triggered a war with Israel.

The families' homes were leveled by airstrikes, and they've had no reliable shelter and scant access to medical treatment and baby supplies in the first six months of their children's lives.

Ms al Taweel tells the Associated Press she was preparing a "beautiful life" for her son Ali - but now "we barely live day by day".

After fleeing to Rafah, they stayed in a tent - "the worst experience of my life," Ms Al-Taweel says.

Ali is underweight. "I can't even feed myself to properly feed my child," says Ms Al-Taweel. "The boy is losing more weight than he gains."

At al Aqsa, one of Gaza's last functioning hospitals, she was told her son needed surgery for a hernia - but with resources decimated they couldn't perform the operation.

Ms Saqer's daughter Masa spent a portion of her young life living in a tent made from stitched-together flour bags, pooled with muddy water when it rains.

Masa grew sick with a fever, her skin yellowish. Ms Saqer was too malnourished to produce milk, and sores broke out across her breasts.

"Even when I endure the pain and try to breastfeed my daughter, what she drinks is blood, not milk."

Desperate, she sold aid packets from the UN to buy formula before deciding to travel from Rafah back to central Gaza in the hope of finding medical treatment for Masa.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel is ready to reach a deal to secure the release of 130 hostages held by Hamas.

But he said Israel would not give in to the "extreme" demands of the Palestinian militant group.

"There will be no ceasefire without the return of hostages. It just won’t happen," he said at the start of a weekly cabinet meeting today.

Talks aimed at securing a ceasefire and the release of hostages are due to take place in Cairo today.

Mr Netanyahu said Hamas hoped international pressure would make Israel give in to its demands, but he stressed that would not happen.

The UK would not export arms to Israel if doing so was found to be in breach of international law, Oliver Dowden has suggested.

Speaking on the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, the deputy prime minister said the UK would not "supply those arms" if it was unable to legally do so.

It comes amid mounting pressure on ministers to reveal what legal advice they have received on continuing arms exports to Israel.

This morning, Mr Dowden told Sky News the UK has "one of the toughest arms export control [regimes] in the world" and said there had been no change to the legal advice.

Families of hostages taken by Hamas reflect on the day they went missing and the six months since, in a video shared by the Foreign Office.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency has published a graphic showcasing what it said were nine different types of Iranian missiles capable of reaching Israel.

Tensions appear to be ratcheting up between the two sides, and a short while ago an Iranian official warned that no Israeli embassy is safe.

US officials said on Friday that they were on high alert about the possibility of a significant Iranian strike on targets inside Israel.

Iran has blamed Israel for a deadly attack on the Iranian consulate Damascus, Syria, last week that killed at least seven officials.

Among those killed was atop commander in Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

Satellite imagery reveals the extent of the destruction at Gaza's al Shifa hospital after six months of war.

These images collected by Maxar show the hospital in June 2022, long before the war began, compared with earlier this week.

Israel withdrew its troops from the hospital on Monday after a two-week raid, leaving behind destroyed buildings and dead bodies.

A senior Iranian official says none of Israel's embassies are safe any more, after a suspected Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

Twenty-eight Israeli embassies around the world temporarily closed on Friday due to fears of reprisal from Iran, the official said.

Yahya Rahim Safavi, an adviser to the Supreme Leader, said the attack was a "violation of international laws".

Seven members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard were killed in the 1 April attack, with Iran vowing retaliation.
