Meanwhile, last year Mering spoke to NME about her fifth album , ‘And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow’.

Mering explained how she thrives creatively in chaos, and how that helped her write her latest album. “It’s when things are really going well that I actually get weird,” she said.

“When things start going bad, something happens. I snap into gear. They say it’s like a survival thing: if you start freaking out when stuff starts going wrong, you’re going to maybe get hurt or die. So you go limp. When you fall, try to not get too tense, because the rigidity will make you less flexible when the rock tumbler starts.”

Weyes blood – ‘in holy flux’ europe & uk tour 2023 concert review.

Still jet-lagged at the second stop of her In Holy Flux-tour, Natalie Mering – professionally known as Weyes Blood – certainly made Stockholm’s hearts aglow. Under the huge crystal crown inside of the big saloon at the sold-out, historical Berns Hotel & House of Entertainment in central Stockholm, Sweden, a crowd consisting of hipster kids, nerds, and adult misfits have gathered in order to get embraced by Natalie Mering’s treacherously beautiful hymns. She’s often accused of preaching to the crowd – but that’s exactly what we’re here for, listening to someone who’s not afraid of speaking out about all the terrible things we have to face in life – accompanied by some of the most gorgeous tunes you’ve ever heard.

After Lady Apple Tree completely stole the pre-set from Sam Burton’s acoustic set with a lovely rendition of the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Didn’t Want to Have to Do It,” as the duo took us away to the folksy days of 1965-or-so, Weyes Blood is letting us wait for her appearance. And wait. And wait… then, suddenly, after 30 minutes of waiting, she’s skipping out in a white nightgown to the tune of her last album’s lead single, “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody.” It’s only her second stop of her ‘In Holy Flux’ tour, and she’s still jet-lagged from her long journey over the Atlantic and across one-and-a-half continents, she explains. It comes off almost like an attempt to ease the expectations.

weyes blood tour uk

She never had to. Weyes Blood live sounds very similar to Weyes Blood in the studio. A bit too perfect, even? Maybe. Sure, she’s throwing out roses to the audience and premieres a music video directed by BBC documentarist Adam Curtis in the background, but musically, there are not many surprises. But rather no surprises than negative ones. As a vocalist, she’s incredibly gifted, and her studio-loyal performances confirm this. Not a tear remained dry after her heart-wrenching “God Turn Me into a Flower” from her latest album, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow – arguably the greatest song she’s ever written.

As a performer, she’s confident, cool, and down-to-earth. She’s romanticizing about the paintings of old men on the walls, laughing about how she found a city store that sold “American delicatessen,” and asks the crowd whether anyone knows a haunted place in the town. Every time, the crowd is too caught in the moment to provide her with a great answer (And so am I. Guess my chance of partying with Natalie Mering is officially screwed).

After ending the set with the Carole King-esque “Everyday,” standing ovations force her to come back in to give us a final song. “It will be a sad one – ’cause that’s what we all are,” she says in a dark voice. For a moment, I’m hoping for a version of the stunning “Picture Me Better,” one of the few songs from her last two records that she hasn’t performed yet. It turns out to be the sleepy “A Given Thing,” one of my least favorite songs of hers. A disappointment? Never. The truth is, with a voice like hers, I could stay for hours listening to her performing any song.

Live reviews

The band played most songs from Titanic Rising and a handful of songs from Front Row Seat to Earth. Bonus song during the encore was a Lou Reed cover! Such a heavenly voice attached to a super cool, kind person. So very glad to see Natalie getting the recognition she deserves-Titanic Rising is probably the AOTY for me, and there's still a few months of 2019 to go. After the show she came out after 10-15 minutes backstage and was really happy to engage with fans. I brought her a pair of handmade jewelry and a few days later she shouted me out on social media. Some interesting bits about this particular show in San Diego: Opener Dustin Wong was very unique- I had never seen someone sit onstage creating intricate soundscapes with pedals/guitar loops/etc. It was pretty avant garde and not really for me, but I appreciated his creativity and unique approach to music. Secondly- God, I really hate the Irenic as a venue even though it's for all ages shows and it's nice to have people under 21 to have a place to consistently see concerts. It got SO hot in there (never felt that before) and I felt like I was melting. It was nice that Soda Bar/Irenic management brought a ton of cold Yerba Mate to the venue for free, but I honestly would've appreciated water or some fans running.

All in all, despite melting into a sweaty puddle, what a great show.

Isis, by Bob Dylan was the song that played initially before adorning the stage and things regarding Weyes Blood all made sense. I adore this years release of Titanic Rising the current album from Natalie Mering aka Weyes Blood.

A lots gonna change, the opening track of said album was the opening track of the set, gorgeous in all its grandeur, made for the perfect set up to a beautifully harmonious concert. Her voice is amazing. She hit all the right notes. She alternated between tracks of her previous albums and the new one with seamless precision. Her on stage presence was sweet and adorable, engaging with the crowd between tracks. She covered Procol Harems a Whiter Shade of Pale near the end of the set which she sung beautifully. Finishing with a solo acoustic number called The Beginning, ironically.

She is lovely with a sublime voice. 10/10.

Natalie is from another world!

She has THE most beautiful voice I have ever had the privilege of hearing live, I was in tears for pretty much every song. WEYES BLOOD are mine and my wife’s favourite artist right now, but unfortunately my wife was unable to attend last nights show due to illness.

We have already purchased tickets for Natalie’s show in October..... I predict more tears.......double the amount!

Thank you for the music Natalie.

Much love from Neil and Kirsty xx

She was insane! So so great and the whole atmosphere, band, lights and effects was all incredible-one of the best artists I’ve ever seen live!!! As the show went on she just got better and better and more into it, the vocals were great as well as her stage presence and set list.

She's brilliant. I could listen to her sing all day. She started with the heavenly 'Take You There' and then continued to leave the crowd breathless for the rest of her set which included a great cover of Lou Reeds 'Perfect Day'. Looking forward to the next time she's in town.

Amazing voice and band is so cohesive, venue was perfect for her style. The lights were awesome too and really well done. The Rialto was perfect for her vibe and the order of the set list flowed really well. Obviously « movies » was over the top amazing as per usual.

Natalie Mering/Weyes Blood is probably one of the best live singers I have ever seen. There is never anything less than pure magic that leaves her mouth. The whole band is very talented and puts on a great show. Also, their covers are THE best.

Absolutely sublime performance. Weyes Blood touched the audience with a marvelous "repertoire". She is a sexy genius artist.

Absolute voice control and chemistry that perhaps spread out some feelings that audience can't forget too soon.

Great show that proved quite flawless at the Phoenix Concert Theater. Weyes Blood is a wonderful musician that can connect with the audience through great music and a little onstage talk. Hope to see her again.

So great! Funny, loud, intimate, fun and awesome. My girlfriend had barely even heard them and she really enjoyed it too. I've been wanting to see them for a long time so I was very excited and they delivered.

In a statement shared alongside the album announcement, Mering explained that: " Titanic Rising was the first album of three in a special trilogy. It was an observation of things to come, the feelings of impending doom. And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow is about entering the next phase, the one in which we all find ourselves today — we are literally in the thick of it. Feeling around in the dark for meaning in a time of instability and irrevocable change. Looking for embers where fire used to be. Seeking freedom from algorithms and a destiny of repetitive loops. Information is abundant and yet so abstract in its use and ability to provoke tangible actions. Our mediums of communication are fraught with caveats. Our pain, an ironic joke born from a gridlocked panopticon of our own making, swirling on into infinity.

Weyes Blood's “In Holy Flux Tour,” a headlining international tour in support of And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow , begins in the U.K. and EU in January. The North American leg kicks off February 22 in Nashville. See below for dates.

And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow tracklist:

“It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody” “Children Of The Empire” “Grapevine” “God Turn Me Into A Flower” “Hearts Aglow” “And In The Darkness” "Twin Flame” “In Holy Flux” “The Worst Is Done” “A Given Thing”

Natalie Mering, AKA Weyes Blood, at the Roundhouse.

Weyes Blood review – torch songs for the end of time

Roundhouse, London The US singer-songwriter with a voice for the ages delivers a sumptuous, soft rock-leaning set that circles around urgent concern for the planet and humanity

M any people will recognise the feeling of gobsmacked powerlessness so often engendered by current affairs. Not for nothing was “ permacrisis ” declared the word of the year for 2022. US artist Natalie Mering, who records as Weyes Blood, pronounced as Flannery O’Connor would say it , eyes up environmental collapse, the sinister march of tech into human relationships and the lack of love seemingly endemic among humans and responds by throwing all the beauty she can muster back at them.

It is a great deal of loveliness. Her voice is one for the ages, a real-deal instrument that taps into classic American timbres: Karen Carpenter or the folk sirens of the 60s-70s cusp. Mering’s vocal default mode is limpid grace, tilting at old timey mellifluousness. She definitely doesn’t want to be inhaling all the dry ice that has been pumped on stage at the start of her set. “No more fog!” she instructs. “It’s apocalyptic enough as it is.”

But when Mering very occasionally lets rip – as on the great key changes during God, Turn Me Into a Flower – the hairs stand up on your arms and whoops fill the air. While she spends most of this gig soft-lit by gentle ochre shades, this organ-drenched hymn finds her singing in darkness. Surrounded by little electric candelabras, her disembodied voice is all the more sonorous. Video plays out on the screen: a collage of people going about their business, both sinister-normal and downright disturbing, by famed documentary polemicist Adam Curtis .

Then there’s Weyes Blood’s music itself, a body pillow of sumptuousness that, although it’s coming out of regulation speakers towards the front of the room, somehow contrives to feel like surround sound. For this tour – dubbed In Holy Flux after a track on her latest album, 2022’s And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow – Mering is travelling with a conventional band, having left the album’s harpist, string section and wind instruments behind.

Earlier Weyes Blood records were folkier, noisier propositions. But the last two – And in the Darkness and its immediate predecessor, Titanic Rising (2019) – have found the singer-songwriter embracing 1970s soft rock, the immersive potential of analogue synths and the great American songbook. Both string and vocal arrangements on her records tend towards the swooning and cinematic – nodding to the vintage films Mering used to watch as a child, when her media diet was policed by Pentecostal parents .

Key, too, is the quality of her writing, which takes in the vicissitudes of love but also looks askance at what has become of the American dream – and its dreamers – from a very contemporary perspective. Here, Weyes Blood recalls Joni Mitchell, an instantly recognisable chronicler of her times.

If the current vogue is for nostalgia, Weyes Blood fits right in, with music that draws audibly from a time when the US still seemed like a superpower and white westerners often went on their merry way, unburdened by things such as pandemics. But running against that cosy grain is the knowledge, embedded in almost every Weyes Blood song, that everything is fast becoming harder: finding love, holding on to certainties, contemplating the future.

Weyes Blood at the Roundhouse.

One of Mering’s loveliest songs tonight, A Lot’s Gonna Change , harks back to this kind prelapsarian consciousness, a childhood of constancy and safety. But “a lot’s gonna change in your lifetime”, she warns herself. That song was released in 2019. “This ended up being a lot truer than I ever could have imagined,” she tells the audience wryly.

The Worst Is Done , from And in the Darkness, marks the end of the pandemic with a sigh of relief, but notes that “the worst is yet to come”. Even as the surface of Weyes Blood’s chamber-folk-pop can appear smooth, elements of undoing are contained within. The keyboards on Children of the Empire sound like a sour fairground calliope. Everyday ends on a skronk of keyboards and noise, a vestigial holdover from Weyes Blood’s much more experimental past.

Having been a child in LA, circling back in adulthood, Mering has a respect for showbiz tropes – and for displaying her awareness of them, à la Father John Misty. A few songs in, she declares she’s giving us “a tight five minutes of banter to make the sad songs less heavy”. She dances around, using her billowing white Grecian gown as a prop, twirling her microphone. Dryly, she discusses her disbelief in astrology (“I’m a Gemini, but I self-identify as a Scorpio”) as a way of leading into a song called Something to Believe .

But it’s the sincerity and the all-enveloping quality of Mering’s art that resonates most loudly. Built on keyboard oscillations and her stern, velvety tones, Movies probably remains Weyes Blood’s knockout blow; a song about cinema – and screens more widely – that sees her dress used as a backdrop for projections of water, reflecting the drowned-world theme of its parent album.

Embedded in Mering’s dress is a secret chest section that lights up red towards the end of the set: that’ll be her “heart aglow”. Her plea throughout these magnificently sad songs is for people to urgently witness the humanity of others, to behave as though we were all wearing our glowing hearts outside our bodies. Equally, it looks like there’s a big infrared target on her chest.

Weyes Blood Announces Tour and New Album, Shares New Song: Listen

By Madison Bloom

Weyes Blood

Weyes Blood has announced her first album since 2019’s Titanic Rising . Natalie Mering’s latest is called And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow and it arrives November 18 via Sub Pop . Today, Mering has shared lead single “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody,” which she refers to as “a Buddhist anthem, ensconced in the interconnectivity of all beings.” Find the song and Weyes Blood’s tour schedule below.

And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow was written by Mering, who co-produced most of the album alongside Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado. (Mering co-produced one song, “A Given Thing,” with Rodaidh McDonald.) The new record also features guest appearances from Meg Duffy, Daniel Lopatin, and Mary Lattimore. The 10-track LP was mixed by Kenny Gilmore at 101 Studio and mastered by Emily Lazar and Chris Allgood at the Lodge. And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow is the second album in a trilogy that began with Titanic Rising . The third installment, as teased in press materials, will be about “hope.”

Since releasing Titanic Rising , Mering has collaborated with the Killers , recorded with Tim Heidecker , appeared on Lana Del Rey’s Chemtrails Over the Country Club , and more.

Weyes Blood Shares New Video For “Twin Flame”

“In Holy Flux Tour” International Tour Dates Underway

And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow  Available Worldwide From Sub Pop

Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering stars in this deliciously macabre and chilling new video for “Twin Flame,” directed by Ambar Navarro. In a dual role, Mering portrays a yearning soul wandering the empty halls of a dark castle after her mysterious husband has ridden off on horseback into the night. What does she find hidden amongst the castle walls? Is her spiritual nemesis, haunting her every move, trying to warn her?

“Twin Flame” is a standout from her acclaimed album  And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow , out now on Sub Pop.

Devastatingly haunting, a video that accompanies and does justice to the cinematic composition.

Weyes Blood’s headlining “In Holy Flux Tour” continues in support of  And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow,  with a show on Friday, 27 th  September in San Francisco, CA, at The Warfield.

The “In Holy Flux Tour: The Resurrection,” a run of UK and European shows, will begin Saturday, October 28th in Lisbon, Portugal and includes a show at London’s Eventim Apollo on 13 th  November (as part of Pitchfork Music Festival London) and run through Tuesday, November 14th in Nottingham, UK at Rock City.

Weyes Blood will be supported in the UK and Europe from Vagabon (October 31st-November 15th), Núria Graham (October 28th-30th), and Ichiko Aoba (November 8th and 13th).
