Who is Dr John?

Dr John

Dr John Mason (MBE) is the principal astronomy lecturer at South Downs Planetarium in the UK and a well-known ‘eclipse chaser’, who has gained a reputation for his tremendous enthusiasm and inspirational lecturing style.

For over 30 years he has been leading overseas expeditions to observe and record natural phenomena such as annular and total solar eclipses, the polar aurora and major meteor showers in destinations all over the world.

His 'living planetarium' shows, where he uses the real night sky as an outdoor star theatre, have been enjoyed by audiences everywhere from the deserts of the Middle East and islands in the Pacific to the Australian outback and African safari parks.

Today starts with a guided tour of the Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories. It consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin, 80 km (50 miles) west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 metres (82 feet) in diameter.

Later, take a ride on the Sunset Sandia Peak Tram. Rising from the hustle and bustle of Albuquerque, you’ll ascend one of America’s most stunning urban peaks, reaching the 3163 m (10377 ft) crest of the Sandia Mountains where a panoramic view awaits.

Please note that you will reach a high elevation on the tram ride.

Included Activities:

Day 3: Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Date: 28 March 2024

Today you will leave Albuquerque and start the journey to Santa Fe.

This evening you’ll spend some time stargazing. The preserve boasts some of the darkest night skies in the world and was declared an official International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association in 2021.

Accommodation: Governor’s Inn Hotel or similar

Included Activities:

  • Stargazing activity

Santa Fe City Tour, options include: Walking Architecture & Wine Tasting Tour, Churches of the Royal City Walking Tour, Bandelier Hiking Tour, Georgia O’Keefe Museum & Studio Tour (The plan is to allow travellers to choose desired tour option and group splits into smaller tours for the afternoon, before meeting for group dinner and heading to stargazing).

Day 4: Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Date: 29 March 2024

This morning we’ll head north through the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Mountains to reach Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (formerly known as the San Juan Pueblo) – the first Spanish capital of New Mexico.

You’ll visit the home of Puebloans Norma and Hutch Naranjo, where you’ll embark on a culinary adventure. Learn to bake traditional Native American Horno bread, kneading the dough and stuffing it with locally-sourced prune and cherry filling while Norma shares the rich history of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, “the place of strong people,” and their efforts to preserve their culture. Later, Hutch will show you how to load up the special beehive-shaped adobe ovens with bread, pastries, and gourmet surprises and teach you about their history.

After a locally-sourced lunch made with seasonal ingredients, this afternoon you will travel just a few miles north to the Los Luceros Historical Site which borders the Rio Grande River. Long home to indigenous peoples, this area was settled by the Luceros and Ortiz families in the 1700s before socialite-turned-farmer, Mary Cabot Wheelwright, took ownership of the ranch in the early 1900s and hosted shamans, artists and writers.

You will have the chance to explore the grounds and historic buildings on your own – from acres of fruit orchards and groves of Cottonwood trees to a restored capilla (19th-century chapel) and Victorian guest house. Just want to relax? Take in rare views of the Jemez mountains and decompress on the pristine banks of the Rio Grande.

Day 6: Alamogordo, New Mexico, USA

Date: 31 March 2024

Start the day with a visit to the New Mexico Museum of Space History, which is devoted to the history, science and technology of space travel. See authentic ‘moon rock’ and rare replicas of the first man-made satellites, Sputnik and Explorer, and wander the International Space Hall of Fame, which recognises the accomplishments of people around the world who have contributed to the quest for space.

Next, drive through Cloudcroft and Lincoln National Forest towards Sunspot Solar Observatory. The route will take you along the largest solar system model west of the Mississippi. Set at a scale of 1:250 million, the distance from Cloudcroft, NM to the Visitor Centre in Sunspot is scaled to correspond to the distance between the sun and the dwarf planet Pluto. The other planets are placed along the way to scale with their distance from the sun. Driving at 35 mph on NM Route 6563, to scale, you are moving approximately 10 times faster than the speed of light!

Located at an altitude of 2804m (9200 ft) in the scenic Lincoln National Forest, Sunspot Solar Observatory is home to gorgeous vistas, historical landmarks, and one of the largest active solar telescopes in the world. The Dunn Solar Telescope, built in 1969, remains to date one of the best ground-based solar observatories in the world.

Finishing the day by visiting Apache Point Observatory. The  Apache Point Observatory Lunar Laser-ranging Operation , or  APOLLO , is a project at the Apache Point Observatory. It is an extension and advancement of previous Lunar Laser Ranging experiments, which use retroreflectors on the Moon to track changes in lunar orbital distance and motion.

Eclipse and Astronomy

Item 1

We have launched a programme of astronomically themed holidays that will open up the universe to you. By day we will admire the wildlife and landscapes of the natural world, but by night our attention will be drawn to the celestial realms. Whilst some tours are arranged around a particular event such an eclipse, others will take you to regions of the world where the truly dark skies can be enjoyed. A lot of careful planning and experience goes into operating these tours: to optimise the viewing we draw upon historical weather data and consider factors such as altitude and the phase of the moon.

Over the past two years our Namibian Night and Day tour has provided a wonderful blend of stargazing, tremendous scenery, and wildlife. This tour will run again in 2024 and 2025.

We have teamed up with the DarkSky Alqueva and SPEA, Portugal’s society for the study of birds, to bring you a tour of  Portugal’s Alentejo region focusing on nature, culture and astronomy at the dark sky reserve.

After wonderfully successful tour to Chile in 2019 for the total solar eclipse, we have arranged a tour to Mexico’s Pacific coast to witness a total eclipse in April 2024. This will include amazing opportunities to see enjoy the history, culture and wildlife of this vibrant country.

On each of our ‘Eclipse and Astronomy Holidays’ we will aim to offer the following:

  • Private vehicles
  • Comfortable hotels
  • Accompanying astronomy expert for all or part of the tour
  • Live Planetarium demonstrations

"Looking to the skies can reward us with some of the most captivating views in nature. I’ve travelled from the UK across the world on 15 eclipse holidays

Eclipse tourism is a growing industry, with tour operators seeing their customer base doubling from last year.

eclipse tours from uk

A total solar eclipse – when the moon fully blocks the Sun – will be seen across parts of North America on Monday.

It will begin over the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean, before moving across Mexico and 13 US states before finishing in Newfoundland in Canada.

In some parts of the world, the sky will go pitch black for four minutes and nine seconds, leaving skygazers in awe of the rare phenomenon.

In the UK, only some parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland and the far west coast of England and Wales might get a partial eclipse between 7pm and 9pm, while weather forecasts are predicting a cloudy night sky ahead make a sighting even less likely.

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 8: The partial solar eclipse is seen above the Statue of Freedom atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building on Capitol Hill on April 8, 2024 in Washington, DC. People have traveled to areas across North America that are in the "path of totality" in order to experience the eclipse today, with the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from a large part of North America won't happen until 2044. (Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty Images) ***BESTPIX***

But that did not stop a group of British tourists who flew to the US to catch a sighting of the spectacle.

Mike Frost, 61, an eclipse-chaser from Rugby Warwickshire told i this was his 15th time viewing a solar eclipse: “We are travelling as part of a group of 220 people, with tour guide company Astro-trails, staying at a ranch near San Antonio in Texas. There’s people from Europe, the US, Japan, South Korea – all over really, all here to enjoy their eclipse holiday.

Thunderstorms to strike England as Met Office issues flood and travel warnings

Thunderstorms to strike England as Met Office issues flood and travel warnings

“I saw my first eclipse in India 25 years ago, and I’ve travelled all over the world to see them – I have to because the next one in the UK isn’t until 2090.

“The company chose rural Texas because it has the best weather expected – but it’s not turned out like that. That’s the occupational hazard with eclipse holidays, there’s clouds but we’re hoping they move away from us to the south and some gaps emerge and the clouds disperse so we can see the eclipse.”

According to US commercial broadcast television network ABC, four million people will be travelling to view it. Eclipses happen globally every 18 months, this one will be visible across a huge swath of the US. Nasa says the eclipse will cover several densely populated cities with some 31.5 million people able to see it, making witnessing it more accessible for many.

While people have been gazing at the sky for thousands of years, travel companies have recently started to cash in on “eclipse holidays”, with some packages to view an eclipse costing just over £4,149 .

Meanwhile, Delta, United and Southwest airlines are all operating flights, so passengers can view the eclipse from 30,000ft. Delta’s flight from Austin to Detroit sold out in less than 24 hours.

Kevin Currie, director of New Scientist Discovery Tours, told i there has been a huge increase in interest in solar eclipse tours in recent years.

“We have four groups, with 120 people in total – a lot of Britons, Austria, Germany and people from Luxemborg.”

“Most have seen before, and it’s a nice way to experience the best of a country, with expert-talks, stargazing and trips to observatories in the area, surrounded by curious guests from around the world.

“We did Australia last year where we got a boat off coast of Australia. This year we’ve doubled our customers, and for the 2026 eclipse in Greenland and off the coast of Iceland, we have already got loads of queries where we take people to the best place, and the best view position on the globe to view an eclipse.”

Total Solar Eclipse Travel

The midday Sun has vanished, replaced by a gaping black hole in the sky that’s wreathed in a spiderweb halo of silvery light. Daylight becomes twilight; bright planets and stars emerge. Sunset colors wrap the horizon. Eyewitnesses shout, clap, cry, or are struck silent. It is sensory overload; an unimagined experience. It is a total solar eclipse.

Witnessing a total eclipse of the Sun with our travel groups is a must-see, bucket-list event. That’s because it’s not just a sight to behold—it’s something that needs to be experienced. No photograph can ever do totality justice. Words are inadequate to describe it. Witnessing a total solar eclipse is visceral, emotional, an experience unlike any other. First-timers are often completely unprepared for the range of emotions that engulf them when the Sun vanishes from the sky. Moments later, when a beam of sunlight pierces the darkness and totality ends, the first words on everyone’s lips are: “When is the next one?”

2027 egypt total solar eclipse tour, crafting total solar eclipse travel.

Joining a TravelQuest total solar eclipse tour means a worry-free travel experience, because we look after all the research, planning, and logistics. For each destination, we find the perfect balance of high-quality accommodations, great meals, and comfortable transport.

This requires extensive long-range planning, particularly if totality passes over a remote region of our planet where the amenities are limited. Several years prior to the eclipse, TravelQuest scouts potential viewing sites along the path, reserves nearby hotel rooms, and arranges local transportation. In doing so, we lock in many of the core costs of the tour.

Weather is another consideration—the sky must be clear during totality. Since we can’t wave away any clouds that appear on eclipse day, we work closely with long-time eclipse meteorologist Jay Anderson to try to avoid clouds altogether. He studies the weather prospects for our potential eclipse-viewing sites, checks the weather constantly prior to totality, and can recommend an alternate site if weather at our prime viewing location doesn’t look ideal. Jay has forecast eclipse-day weather since 1979, and he has been involved with TravelQuest since its inception. Thanks to his expertise, we have an unparalleled record of success when it comes to seeing totality.

This is our craft: designing and executing eclipse-travel packages that provide our clients with the opportunity to experience the wonders of our planet and stand in the shadow of the Moon. In so doing, TravelQuest has developed a loyal following—on most tours, at least half of our guests have traveled with us before. Our experienced trip leaders are among the best in the eclipse travel industry, and our local guides and contacts open doors to sights and events that are often inaccessible to independent travelers.

Previous Total Eclipse Travels

Since its founding in 1996, TravelQuest has planned and fulfilled some 250 total solar eclipse tours and astronomy-themed excursions to all seven continents. A few of our more unusual solar eclipse viewing locations have been the deck of an icebreaker near the North Pole, the Gobi and Libyan Deserts, Easter Island among the Moai, Norway’s northern island of Svalbard, and on board aircraft flying over the Antarctic and the North Atlantic. We have also seen totality from more traditional sites including Turkey, Chile, Egypt, Spain, and numerous locations across the United States during Totality 2017. And we’d be remiss not to mention seeing totality numerous times from the deck of the luxurious m/s Paul Gauguin , sailing out of Tahiti. In other words, we offer total solar eclipse travel at its very best.

At TravelQuest, we have a particular philosophy when it comes to developing our eclipse trips. Naturally, our main goal is to place our travelers in the right place, at the right time, with the optimum weather prospects, to give our group the best possible chance of seeing totality. We also organize hotels, meals, local transportation, local guides, and so on—in addition to providing a great eclipse-viewing site.

But totality is brief. It takes only one tiny cloud, in the wrong part of the sky at the wrong time, to ruin the highlight of the tour. That’s why, when TravelQuest creates total solar eclipse tours, we do so with the idea that you’re taking a solar eclipse vacation. We design our tour packages to provide the best possible travel experience through a part of the world you may not be familiar with—but have either always wanted to visit or perhaps never thought of traveling to. Standing in the shadow of the Moon during a total solar eclipse is, literally, the icing on the cake of an incredible journey.

Join Us for A Remarkable Experience

Totality is an immersive affair. For mere moments, it engenders a sense of wonder and awe in all who view it. Those who have seen totality will travel thousands of miles to see another and to relive this emotional celestial spectacle.

It’s often said that seeing totality is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Fortunately, that doesn’t have to be the case. There is a total solar eclipse visible from somewhere on Earth every 18 months or so. After visiting Antarctica for totality in 2021, TravelQuest has a variety of upcoming total solar eclipse tours in various stages of development: Western Australia and the Timor Sea in April 2023; Mexico, the eastern United States, and Canada in April 2024; and Iceland and northern Spain in August 2026. You’ll find TravelQuest at each of these eclipses, perfectly positioned somewhere along the centerline of totality. Join us, and share in the wonder as we stand in the shadow of the Moon.

Here's how and when to watch today's total solar eclipse

Last year was one to remember for skygazers, with comets , meteor showers, over-excited Northern Lights and an annular eclipse .

This year is going one better with a full, total eclipse – the best kind.

Unfortunately for Brits, it won’t cross UK shores this evening, although a few areas will catch a glimpse of the partial eclipse .

Depending on the weather, this will include Glasgow, Manchester and Ireland.

The shadow of the total eclipse will trace a path from west to east, starting in northern Mexico , travelling diagonally across the US and ending at the eastern tip of Canada .

The best cities to spot it include Indianapolis in Indiana, Cleveland in Ohio and Niagara Falls in New York – quite the combination of nature’s spectacles.

What causes a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses happen when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking out our star and throwing a sliver of the planet into darkness.

Believe it or not, there are between two and five solar eclipses every year, but they don’t always happen over land for people to see – and total solar eclipses only happen around every 18 months.

What are the different types of solar eclipse?

Total solar eclipse This happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth, completely blocking the face of our star. The Sun’s corona becomes visible around the Moon’s shadow, and the sky will darken similar to dawn or dusk.

Annular solar eclipse The Moon again passes directly between the Sun and the Earth, but at or close to its further point from Earth, meaning it does not entirely block out the Sun. This creates a circle of light around the Moon, often referred to as the ‘ring of fire’.

Partial solar eclipse This happens when the Moon is not in perfect alignment with the Sun, only blocking part of it and creating a crescent shape. People living on either side of the path of a total or annular solar eclipse will be able to see a partial eclipse.

How can you watch a solar eclipse?

The most important rule of watching a solar eclipse is never look directly at the Sun.

While waiting for the total eclipse viewers can use special glasses that are thousands of times darker than regular sunglasses.

But buy carefully – the American Astronomical Society (AAS) is warning people of counterfeit glasses on the market.

They say the best way to test yours is wear them inside. You shouldn’t be able to see anything except very bright lights, which should appear faint. If you can make out objects, they’re not strong enough.

You can also buy binoculars specially designed for observing the Sun all year around that will allow you to watch as the Moon wanders into view.

Alternatively, you can cheaply and easily make a pinhole projector – simply put a hole in a piece of card, hold it up to the Sun and shine the light from the hole onto a second piece of card in front of it. This projects the entire version of the event in miniature.

How can I watch the solar eclipse in the UK?

If, like most of us, you’re not lucky enough to be in the path of the solar eclipse, you can watch it online thanks to Nasa’s YouTube livestream.

Coverage will start at 6pm BST and continue until 9pm, with commentary from experts and live telescope views of the eclipse as it happens across the continent.

There will be a partial eclipse in some parts of the UK, however. When you can see it depends on where in the UK you are – and how annoyingly cloudy it will be.

The eclipse will start at 7.52pm in Scotland, 7.54pm in Northern Ireland and England and 7.55pm in Wales.

Sadly, this partial cosmic ballet won’t last too long. Ending at 8.04pm in Wales, 8.06pm in England, 8.21pm in Northern Ireland and 8.51pm in Scotland.

When is the next solar eclipse in the UK?

Total solar eclipses only return to the same spot once every 400 years. Luckily Brits won’t have to wait quite that long for the next one, but unfortunately, many of us still won’t be around to see it – it’s happening in 2090.

However, next year a partial eclipse will cross the country, on March 29, 2025.

Another will follow on August 12, 2026.
