Mumbai's Marine Drive: The Complete Guide

A Dream Destination for Art Deco Lovers

Marine Drive, Mumbai's iconic curved coastal boulevard, is often referred to as the Queen's Necklace because of its glowing string of street lights. This popular seaside promenade provides a refreshing break from the claustrophobic concrete jungle that covers most of the city. In 2018, the long stretch of Art Deco buildings lining it received UNESCO World Heritage status, as part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai. Notably, Mumbai has the second largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, after Miami.

Marine Drive was built as part of the British government's Back Bay Reclamation Scheme during the second phase of Mumbai's urban development in the early 20th century. This scheme involved dredging the sea and dumping stone into it, to create land and expand the city westward.

An inscription on a lamp post near Girgaum Chowpatty indicates that the construction of Marine Drive began there, at what was called Kennedy Sea Face, in 1915. It was named after Sir Michael Kavanagh Kennedy, an engineer who was Secretary of the Bombay Public Works Department and a General in the British Army. Unfortunately, he died in 1898, well before the reclamation works began.

Marine Drive actually ended up shorter than planned, as logistical problems meant less land was reclaimed than expected. By the mid 1930s, most of the infrastructure works were complete, and the pavement and sidewalk were being laid. Attention turned to architecture, particularly the Art Deco style that was gripping the world. It was seen as glamorous and modern, and was eagerly embraced by the wealthy movie stars and Parsi migrants who went on a building spree along Marine Drive.

Many of the Parsis were progressive industrialists. They favored contemporary apartments and offices, as opposed to the city's pervasive imperial Gothic and Indo-Saracenic structures. The Art Deco style reflected their aspirations and enabled them to portray themselves as elite jet-setting Indians, engaged in western culture. It also rebranded Mumbai as a metropolis on the move and breaking away from the British.

The last of Marine Drive's Art Deco buildings came up in the late 1940s and 1950s, towards the northern end of the boulevard. The owners were mostly wealthy Hindu families who migrated from Pakistan during the 1947 Partition of India. Kuwaiti royals also owned a couple of the buildings (the Al-Sabah and Al-Jabreya Court buildings) as holiday homes.

Many of Marine Drive's hotels have interesting histories as well. The Sea Green Hotel was previously a residential apartment building that was occupied by the British army in the Second World War. The Intercontinental used to be the Natraj Hotel, built on the site of the exclusive, Europeans-only Bombay Club. The Natraj had what was possibly the city's first ice cream parlor, Yankee Doodle. Hotel Marine Plaza was originally the Bombay International Hotel, where the members-only Studio 29 nightclub revolutionized the city's party scene in the 1980s. The Trident hotel was constructed as the Oberoi Sheraton in 1972. This towering hotel was the tallest hotel in India at the time, with 550 rooms and 30 floors, and was the first hotel in the city rival to the landmark Taj Palace hotel. The Trident and adjoining Oberoi hotel, a newer luxury business hotel that opened in 1986, were attacked by terrorists in 2008.

The proximity of Marine Drive to Churchgate Street (now known as Veer Nariman Road) ensured its popularity as a residential area. By the swinging sixties, the street was the epicenter of the city's nightlife.. Locals enjoyed being able to walk to its many jazz clubs, bars and restaurants.

After Bombay became Mumbai in 1996, numerous roads were also renamed to remove lingering colonial connotations. This included Marine Drive, which is now officially called Netaji Subhash Chandra Marg.

The boulevard's prime location and the city's shortage of space have driven the price of old Art Deco apartments up to $2 million or more. These days, most people can only ambitiously dream of living there, and nostalgically dream of the past.

Marine Drive extends about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Nariman Point business district to Girgaum Chowpatty at the foot of posh Malabar Hill in South Mumbai. Its bordered by the Back Bay, which joins the Arabian Sea, on one side and Western Line of the Mumbai local train on the other.

How to Get There

Marine Drive can easily be reached by taxi in less than 10 minutes from the Colaba tourist district . Expect to pay around 60-120 rupees, on depending where exactly you want to go.

If taking the local train, there are three stations near Marine Drive on the Western Line — Chuchgate Railway station (at the far south, where the trains originate at terminate), Marine Lines (near the center), and Charni Road (at the far north, near Girgaum Chowpatty).

What to Do There

Joining the city's inhabitants for a stroll along Marine Drive is a quintessential thing to do in Mumbai. It takes about an hour to cover the whole stretch.

Girgaum Chowpatty beach is the sunset hangout spot in Mumbai. You'll be able to watch the sun slink down behind the Malabar Hill skyline, while sampling local snacks from the assembly of street food stalls. It becomes circus-like there on weekends. A block away, on the corner of Veer Nariman Road, is one of Marine Drive's most prominent and best preserved Art Deco buildings, Soona Mahal . It was built in 1937 by the late Kawasji Fakirji Sidhwa, a Parsi who had a flourishing country liquor business, and named after his grandmother Soona bai Kawasji Sidhwa. The family ran a plush bed and breakfast there. Nowadays, the building is home to the renowned Pizza by the Bay restaurant (formerly Talk of the Town, which opened in 1968).

Head to the National Center for Performing Arts , at the far southern end of Marine Drive, for a dose of culture. Catch a talk, film screening, play, dance or live music show.

Children will appreciate a trip to Taraporewala Aquarium , which reopened after renovation in 2015. It's India's oldest aquarium, built in 1951, and named after Parsi philanthropist DB Taraporewala who donated money for its construction.

If you're visiting Mumbai during the monsoon season , Marine Drive is one of the best places to experience the monsoon in the city. Waves energetically crash over the promenade during high tide.

In addition, Marine Drive is a popular spot for fireworks on Diwali (late October or early November each year) and the immersion of Ganesh statues at Girgaum Chowpatty during the epic annual Ganesh festival (usually in September each year).

Accommodations

Marine Drive's hotels are clustered at the southern end of the promenade. For the ultimate indulgence stay at the Oberoi , one of the top five-star hotels in Mumbai , for upwards of about 15,000 rupees ($220) per night including tax. It has a handy location close the National Center for Performing Arts.

Good deals are often available at the Trident Nariman Point next to the Oberoi. It's possible to get a room for under 10,000 rupees ($140) per night, including tax.

The Hotel Marine Plaza is a nautical-themed boutique hotel in a similar price bracket, with sea view rooms from 12,800 rupees ($170) per night including tax. The rooftop swimming pool has outstanding views as well. Another attraction at the hotel is Geoffrey's, a famed British style pub.

Rooms at the Intercontinental Marine Drive are priced from about 14,000 rupees ($200) per night, including tax. It's a small five-star hotel with 60 rooms.

The atmospheric Sea Green Hotel is a cheaper option that's retained its Art Deco character. The spacious rooms all have balconies and most have sea views. Expect to pay around 6,000 rupees ($85) per night upwards, including tax and breakfast.

Bentley Hotel , in Art Deco Krishna Mahal, recently received makeover and is suitable for budget -conscious travelers. Some of the rooms are small but they're clean and comfortable, and priced under 3,500 ($50) per night including tax and breakfast.

Alternatively, there are more heritage hotels just off Marine Drive on Veer Nariman Road. These include the Ambassador and Chateau Windsor .

Mumbai, formerly Bombay, reminds me a lot of New York City , particularly Manhattan. Like Manhattan, Mumbai is also located on a peninsula and ranks among the world’s richest and largest cities . One of the most notable features of Mumbai is the stark contrast between abundance and scarcity. You can see lavish homes and soaring skyscrapers that shape the city’s iconic skyline side-by-side massive slums and underdeveloped areas – such as Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, which became famous because of the film Slumdog Millionaire . 

Constantly evolving as India’s financial nucleus, Mumbai is home to more millionaires and billionaires than anywhere else in the subcontinent. It is also the home of the Indian film industry or Hindi cinema, popularly known as Bollywood. It’s here where countless ambitions take flight every second, earning it the nickname City of Dreams . The city pulsates with aspirations, dreams, and non-stop energy: Mumbai is also the City That Never Sleeps.

Despite its size and urban challenges, Mumbai’s dynamic spirit, rich history, diverse culture, delicious food, and mix of colonial and contemporary architecture make it a fascinating place to explore. How to Get Around Mumbai

Mumbai’s public transport doesn’t quite match up to Delhi’s, but once the Metro train system fully connects the city, it should be comparable. (Note: Read our Perfect 3-day Delhi itinerary here.) The Mumbai Metro , though limited, is useful for certain routes like from the airport to Andheri.

The city’s infamous local trains and unique double-decker buses are the mainstays of public transportation in Mumbai. Talking about local trains, while they can be insanely crowded and not the most comfortable, riding a Mumbai Local , fondly known as the lifeline of Mumbai, is considered an essential experience for any visitor.

Running from north to south, the local train network, with three main lines – Western, Central, and Harbor, connects almost all the major areas and is the fastest and most economical way to travel long distances across the city. All the stations have ticket counters, and a tourist pass is available for short-term visitors. For female visitors, I recommend getting a ticket in the ladies compartment . (Note: Read our Guide to train travel in India .)

BEST buses are another option, covering areas beyond train routes. They’re affordable and offer a slower, scenic view of the city.

The iconic black and yellow taxis are metered and can be hailed on the street. However, if you plan to travel by taxi, I’d recommend app-based cabs like Uber or Ola over traditional taxis to avoid taxi scams.

If you are exploring the suburbs, you can hail an autorickshaw . They are ideal for short distances and are cheaper than cabs. Please ensure that the autorickshaw driver uses the meter. Note: autorickshaws are not allowed in South Mumbai.

In some areas, especially in South Mumbai, walking is a great way to soak in the city’s vibe.

Top Tip: If you are overwhelmed by public transport like me, traveling with young kids, or as a solo female traveler, I’d recommend sticking to autorickshaws or app-based cabs like Uber and Ola.

Three Day Mumbai Itinerary

Day 1 in mumbai: morning in colaba.

I always suggest starting your day super early when you are exploring a new city. This way, you can beat the crowds and make the most of your time – and this is especially true in India. Let’s face it, time is precious, especially when you have a few days to immerse yourself in a new place and experience its true essence.

7:30 am: Leopold Café

Begin your early morning with breakfast at Leopold Café in Colaba , a place that’s more than just a café – it’s a Mumbai icon. Open since 1871, this café has been a part of the city’s history for over a century.

As you enjoy your meal, keep an eye out – you might be spotted for a movie role! Leopold Café is known for being a place where casting agents often look for foreigners to appear as extras in Bollywood films.

The café serves a diverse menu, including Indian, Thai, Chinese, and Continental dishes, and is especially renowned for its fresh juices and desserts like pastries and tarts.

8:30 am: Gateway of India

After a hearty breakfast, stroll over to the nearby Gateway of India . Constructed in 1924, this grand stone archway, facing the Mumbai Harbour, represents the city’s colonial history.

The area around the Gateway is bustling with vendors, photographers, and street food stalls, making it a lively spot to experience Mumbai’s vibrant atmosphere while capturing some great photos.

9 am: Taj Mahal Palace Hotel

Right next to the Gateway of India, the majestic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel stands proud. This iconic hotel has a legendary story. It’s believed that Jamshedji Tata built this luxurious hotel in 1903 after being denied entry to a British hotel in Bombay.

Despite the devastating terrorist attack in November 2008, the hotel demonstrated its resilience by reopening just a few days later, and it has been completely renovated since.

You can admire the hotel’s stunning architecture from the outside, wander through its public areas, and take a moment to relax with a cup of tea at the famous Sea Lounge, which offers picturesque views of the Mumbai Harbour.

Top Tip: Try to make time for traditional Afternoon Tea at the Sea Lounge during your 3-day stay in Mumbai.

10 am: Elephanta Caves

From the Gateway of India, take a ferry to the Elephanta Caves , recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

The journey itself, lasting about an hour from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island (Gharapuri), offers stunning views of Mumbai’s skyline, harbour, and the Arabian Sea. Ferries depart and return to the Gateway of India every half hour, starting at 9 am with the last one departing at 3:30 pm.

These ancient caves are renowned for their rock-cut temples, dating from the 5th to the 7th century, and featuring some of India’s most extraordinary temple carvings.

Be ready for a bit of walking once you reach the island. A short distance from the jetty, you can either walk or take a small train for a nominal fee. Then, you’ll climb a stone staircase of more than 120 steps leading up a hill.

Top Tip: there will be lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes to ensure ease during your exploration.

Day 1 in Mumbai: Afternoon in Colaba Causeway

Back in Mumbai, walk about 900 metres to the nearby Colaba Causeway aka Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, a bustling commercial street in Colaba. It’s famous for its street market, colonial-era buildings, and a variety of restaurants, cafes, and street food vendors.

2 pm: Lunch at Café Mondegar

Café Mondegar, affectionately known as Mondy’s , is another historical café in Mumbai. Every time I’m in Mumbai, I make sure to visit Mondy’s, and I’m confident you’ll love it too.

The menu includes a wide range of dishes, from Indian and Chinese to Western cuisine. Popular choices include onion rings, chili cheese toast, fish and chips, and various sandwiches and burgers.

3 pm: Explore Colaba Causeway

Post lunch, take some time to discover the Colaba Causeway. The area is a shopping haven, with its boutiques and lively street markets. You can find everything from trendy clothes, costume jewelry, and handbags to antiques and home décor items.

It’s a perfect place to score unique and affordable souvenirs. Just remember, bargaining is key to getting the best deals here, so don’t hesitate to negotiate prices!

Day 1 in Mumbai: Evening on Marine Drive

5:30 pm: Architectural Walk to Marine Drive

As you walk from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to Marine Drive , take in the stunning architecture.

Make sure to stop by Oval Maidan, lying between Churchgate and Marine Lines, famous for being the nurturing ground of many renowned Indian cricketers.

The area surrounding Oval Maidan is an architectural delight, showcasing a mix of Victorian Gothic structures like the Bombay High Court and the University of Mumbai, alongside Art Deco buildings such as Regal Cinema, Eros Cinema, Soona Mahal, Empress Court, and Keval Mahal, two contrasting styles that are part of Mumbai’s unique architectural heritage.

These Art Deco structures , along with others in Mumbai, were recognized with a UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2018 under the title The Victorian and Art Deco Ensemble of Mumbai , highlighting their global cultural significance.

Tip: If you’re feeling hungry and have some time to spare, consider visiting Swati Snacks (a bit of a detour from Oval Maidan to Marine Drive) for an authentic street food experience in Mumbai – but in a stylish and hygienic setting.

6 pm: Capture the sunset along Marine Drive

Known as the Queen’s Necklace , Marine Drive is a crescent-shaped boulevard that provides breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea, especially at dusk. It’s an ideal place for a peaceful walk, offering a break from the city’s hustle.

As you near Chowpatty Beach, completing the 2.5 kilometre (1.5 miles) walk, you’ll notice the atmosphere gradually shifts to a lively and festive vibe.

In the evenings, this beach turns into a festival, attracting both locals and tourists who gather to unwind, sample street food, and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

For an unobstructed view of the Arabian Sea, head to the Girgaon Chowpatty Viewing Deck.

8 pm: Dinner in Chowpatty

Chowpatty is an ideal spot to sample Mumbai’s famous street food , such as bhelpuri and pav bhaji.

Near Chowpatty Beach, you’ll find Cream Centre , a well-known vegetarian eatery beloved by both locals and visitors for many years. It’s the perfect place for a meal after a leisurely walk by the sea.

Tip: While indulging in street food, be mindful to choose stalls that uphold basic hygiene standards, such as having a garbage can, using gloves for food handling, and displaying a high turnover of customers, indicating freshness and popularity.

11 pm: Nightcap at Dome

If you still have energy left after your first day in Mumbai, take an Uber or Ola from Chowpatty to the Intercontinental Hotel located on Marine Drive.

Make your way to Dome, their rooftop bar, to take in stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the twinkling lights along Marine Drive. 

It’s a fantastic spot to relax and experience the lively nightlife of Mumbai, a city renowned for its never-ending energy.

Day 2 in Mumbai: Morning in Kala Ghoda

The second day in Mumbai promises to be thrilling as you delve into the city’s glamour and glitz, along with an exploration of the vibrant neighbourhood of Bandra .

8 am: Breakfast at Malido Cafe

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at Malido Café , an up-and-coming café in Kala Ghoda. It offers a variety of dishes, focusing mainly on Parsi cuisine. Try their Bombay sandwich, avocado toast, or risotto.

Adjacent to the Hanging Gardens is Kamla Nehru Park, another urban green space known for its huge shoe-shaped structure, the Old Woman’s Shoe ,that kids and even grown-ups love to climb.

Malabar Hill is one of the most upscale residential areas in Mumbai, known for its scenic views over Nariman Point, Marine Drive, and Chowpatty and the lavish homes of some of Mumbai’s elite.

10 am: Take a Bollywood Tour or Watch a Bollywood Movie

Visiting Mumbai without a taste of Bollywood is like missing a key part of the city’s essence. Taking a guided tour of Mumbai’s Film City or a Bollywood studio provides a unique opportunity to peek behind the scenes of movie-making.

Alternatively, catching the latest Bollywood film at a local cinema is another great way to dive into the narratives that reflect India’s life, culture, traditions, and values .

Day 2 in Mumbai: Afternoon in Bandra

1 pm: Lunch in Bandra

Take an Uber or Ola taxi to Bandra , often known as the Queen of Suburbs, one of the most happening places in Mumbai. Part of the fun will be crossing the Bandra-Worli Sea Link bridge – a 5.6 kilometre engineering feat that connects Bandra with South Mumbai. 

Before you start exploring this chic neighbourhood, have lunch at one of Bandra’s trendy cafes or restaurants. My top picks are Elco Market, Birdsong, and Suzette.

3 pm: Explore Bandra

Post lunch, it’s time to explore the vibrant suburb of Bandra. Every time I find myself in Bandra, it just feels special. In Mumbai’s busy life, Bandra has its unique charm.

Once a quaint fishing village, Bandra has grown up to house some of the city’s most illustrious residents, such as Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan . Here, chic cafes, soaring condos, and stylish shops stand side-by-side crumbling bungalows, 500-year-old Catholic churches, and roadside fish stalls.

But what makes Bandra really special is its vibe – there’s an energy here that’s just contagious.

Begin your exploration on Linking Road, a shopping hotspot, offering everything from trendy, affordable fashion at street stalls to high-end brands in boutiques.

Spend some time meandering through the backstreets of Bandra, particularly Chapel Road and Waroda Road. These areas are known for their colourful street art and murals, offering a visually engaging and enjoyable walk.

Head to Bandra Reclamation , an area that hosts various cultural and social events including music concerts, exhibitions, and food festivals contributing to the vibrant cultural scene of Mumbai.

Take a moment to snap a picture with the I LOVE MUMBAI sign in Bandra Reclamation. This sign has become a beloved symbol of the city, representing Mumbai’s spirit, diversity, and resilience.

Next, visit a Roman Catholic Basilica, Mount Mary Church, located on Sunderban Bandra hill. The visiting timings are 8 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 8:30 pm and the entry is free.

Day 2 in Mumbai: Evening on Bandra Bandstand

6 pm: Sunset at Bandstand

As the sunset starts, head to the seaside promenade of Bandra Bandstand, a popular hangout spot, lined with upscale homes and cafes.

Walk towards the lover’s point, and witness Bandra Fort aka Castella de Aguada. It’s a great spot for photography and to enjoy a panoramic view of the Sea Link, which is stunning at twilight. The opening timings are 6 am to 6:30 pm and the entry is free.

While you walk the Bandra promenade towards the lover’s point, you can stop at Mannat , the home of Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan. You will recognize it by the crowds, waiting for a wave from the man himself.

I vividly recall my first visit to Bandra, standing in front of Mannat. As I looked up at the iconic residence, I was filled with thoughts of ambition and success – I love places like this that really show the power of dreams and the heights they can reach.

8 pm: Dinner at Taj Mahal Tea House

For a laid-back dinner, visit iconic Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Tea House . They offer light meals and an assortment of teas in a peaceful setting, ideal for a tranquil evening.

Day 3 in Mumbai: Morning in Fort

Next, make your way to the artistic Kala Ghoda Art Precinct. This area is famous for its art galleries, trendy boutiques, and cozy cafes. You can plan to visit Jehangir Art Gallery or the National Gallery of Modern Art to dive deep into the creative pulse of Mumbai.

3 pm: Shree Mahalakshmi Temple

Take an Uber or Ola to Mahalaxmi Temple. Among Mumbai’s oldest, it’s a significant Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi.

People come here to get a scenic view of the famed Marine Drive too, looking over the Arabian Sea. Also, you can sit on the lawn or on the wooden cane benches, and munch at a variety of snacks being sold by vendors.

Kids love the colourful theme park here. And they can play in and around the Boot House.

Kamala Nehru Park also has a small open-air amphitheatre. And you'll also find selfie-points decorated with painted rhymes and other kid-themed designs.

15. Mumbai Zoo

Mumbai Zoo, or Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, is one of the oldest zoos in India. It was established in 1861.

The zoo has many common animal species of India and other lesser-known animals. You'll find jackals, sloth bears and swamp deers here. Hyenas, tigers and crocodiles are also in the zoo. And you can meet with penguins too.

Mumbai zoo also has an aviary for aquatic birds. You can interact with birds like pelicans, flamingos and albino crows. And you can also have selfies with cranes, herons and storks among other birds.

The place is known for its range of fauna too. The botanical garden here has more than 3000 trees, herbs and flowering plants.

16. Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum is a place for entertainment, knowledge and relaxation. It is near Mumbai Zoo, and it is the oldest museum in the city. In the museum, you'll find artefacts, maps and manuscripts showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of Mumbai.

The museum also displays clay models and has a plethora of photographs and books narrating the story of the city. And it also organises art workshops, cultural performances and lectures from time to time.

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum was opened to the public in 1872. And the place has been known for its magnificence too. The grand metal palisades, staircase railings and the arched supports were all imported from England. And the etched glass designs are reminiscent of the glorious 19th-century architectural style.

It has been among the underrated places to visit in Mumbai for a long time. And history buffs or knowledge seekers must visit this museum.

17. Film City

Film City of Mumbai is where much of the action of Indian movies and TV shows take place.

18. Mumba Devi Temple

Mumba Devi Temple is among the oldest temples of Mumbai. It is dedicated to Goddess Mumba, after which Mumbai is named. She is considered the guardian goddess of the city.

Local people come to the temple for the daily aarti in the evening and morning. Devotees also come from nearby places to take blessings from Mumba Devi.

The temple is built in the classic ancient Hindu temple style. It has one high spire, with a red flag flying on its top. And the walls are etched with religious mantras and shlokas prominent in the Hindu temples.

During festivals like Navratri, it is decorated with flowers and lights, and the celebrations go on for 10 days. People come from many places to be a part of the religious ceremonies and enjoy the ongoing fair.

19. Flora Fountain

Flora Fountain is one of the tourist places within Churchgate. It stands at the same place where the destroyed ChurchGate of Mumbai used to be.

The fountain was designed by R. Norman Shaw, and it has a mix of Neo-Gothic and Indo-Saracenic styles. It was built in 1864, by Engineer James Forsythe.

This Portland stone structure has fine carvings and sculptures. Its four corners are decorated with different statues. And the water basin below has stone fish figures and lion heads.

A magnificent 7 feet high statue of Roman Goddess Flora adorns the fountain top. And you can enjoy a spectacular view of Flora Fountain in the evening; when it's illuminated by lights.

20. Jehangir Art Gallery

Jehangir Art Gallery has played a prominent role in the evolution of contemporary Indian art. It was established in 1952 with the help of Sir Cowasji Jehangir’s donations. And since then, this art gallery has hosted numerous exhibitions for painters, sculptors, and other artists.

But it’s more than a venue for art exhibitions. Jehangir Art Gallery conducts workshops and other art programmes. And it’s a must-visit place for aspiring artists and art connoisseurs.

21. Rajabai Clock Tower

Rajabai Clock Tower is an 85-metre tall tower in the Fort Campus of the University of Mumbai. Premchand Roychand, a businessman and a stockbroker, financed its construction. And Sir George Gilbert Scott designed it.

The tower resembles London’s Big Ben, and it is among the tallest structures in the area. It chimes every fifteen minutes. The construction began in 1869, and it was completed by 1878.

The access to the inside of the tower is closed to visitors, but you can admire the architecture and detailed stonework from outside. The tower has one of the best stained-glass works in the city. And the architecture is a blend of Venetian-Gothic style. The tower also has 24 small statues, portraying the life of common people during British rule.

22. Bombay High Court

Bombay High Court is one of the oldest High Courts in India, and it’s a UNESCO-recognised site . It was built in the 19th century, in the grand Gothic Revival architectural style. And you'll find traces of Victorian style too.

Here, you can click photographs of this heritage building and visit the museum within the premises. The museum of Bombay High Court provides plenty of information about the Indian judicial system and Indo-British legal history. It has preserved many historical documents too.

And while you're here, you can also be a part of the ongoing hearings. The court looks after the events in Maharashtra and Goa. And two Union Territories – Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, also fall under the jurisdiction of this court.

23. Raj Bhavan

Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor of Maharashtra. And you can visit it during your Mumbai tour.

It has lush green lawns, conserved forest areas and heritage buildings in the complex. The place is spread over an area of around 50 acres in the picturesque Malabar Hill, and the sea surrounds it on three sides.

The buildings are built in varied architectural styles: from British colonial style to Maratha style and modern Indian style of architecture. And the complex also has a British-era bunker, which has been turned into a museum.

24. ISKCON Temple

The temple is also known as Radha Rasabihari Temple and Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple. And it’s an ideal place to pray, meditate and gain knowledge. The temple offers various lessons ranging from Vedic education to meditation and spirituality.

25. Mount Mary Church

Mount Mary Church, or Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, is among the beautiful churches in Mumbai. It is dedicated to Virgin Mary and it has been built in the Gothic architectural style. And the walls are covered with colourful fibreglass murals depicting stories from the life of Mother Mary.

The peaceful environment and the view from the church also attract many people to spend time here. The church stands on a hillock overlooking the Arabian Sea. And from the backyard, you get a view of the spectacular Mumbai skyline.

Mount Mary Church is also famous for the annual Bandra Fair. It is celebrated in September on the birthday of Mother Mary. The church holds a feast on the day, and the area surrounding it experiences a week-long carnival-like celebration.

26. Fort Bassein (Vasai Fort)

Fort Bassein (or Vasai Fort) is a 500-year old Portuguese fort near Vasai-Virar. And it is among the most popular places to visit in Mumbai outskirts.

At its prime, Fort Bassein was a complete city. It had administrative blocks, churches, hospitals, and the Portuguese used it as their base to control the region. The fort also used to be the official residence of the Portuguese governor when he was here.

Today, the fort is in ruins, but it is a part of the heritage tour of the area. The watchtowers allow you to observe the surrounding Vasai village and the extended skyline of Mumbai. And the fort is also a popular spot for movie shoots and pre-wedding photoshoots.

27. Kanheri Caves

Kanheri Caves are a collection of 109 Buddhist caves. These caves used to be a Buddhist monastery, and they’ve been built over a long period. The earliest caves are from the 1st century BCE, while the most recent ones are from the 11th century CE.

Paintings and stone sculptures adorn the walls of the caves. Statues of Buddha in various postures and sizes are in the caves. And you'll also find numerous inscriptions in Brahmi and Devanagari, and some epigraphs in Pahlavi, on the walls.

These caves served as a place for worship, study and meditation. Cave 3 is the largest among the Kanheri Caves, and the most remarkable.

This serene cave complex is situated on a hillside, and it takes a long trek through lush green bushes and rocks to reach here. This site has numerous small streams and waterfalls too. And it also offers a view of the sprawling Mumbai city.

28. Global Vipassana Pagoda

Global Vipassana Pagoda is a meditation dome on the outskirts of Mumbai. The dome is built as a tribute to a Vipassana teacher – Sayagyi U Ba Khin, and it resembles the Shwedagon Pagoda of Myanmar.

The dome of the pagoda is the world’s largest stone dome standing without any supporting pillars. And 8000 people can meditate at a time here.

The architectural pagoda and the intricately carved gates are among the major points of tourist interests. But there also are other structures like the 21.5 feet high statue of Gautam Buddha, the Bell Tower and the Gong Tower. The pagoda complex also has a park, a small waterfall and a replica of the Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath.

Global Vipassana Pagoda spreads the values of Gautam Buddha through its meditation and relaxation sessions. And you can also take meditation courses. The campus has a library and a museum too.

29. Essel World

Essel World is an amusement park, only a few metres from Global Vipassana Pagoda. It’s a popular getaway for relaxation for local people, and it is also among the famous amusement parks in India.

This amusement park has got over 50 amusement rides, adventure activities and fun points to check. There are different rides for adults and kids. And you'll find group rides too. Apart from the rides, you can enjoy in the bowling alley, ice-skating rink, discotheque and many other places.

This park also has a large wave pool and over 30 water activities, including a rain dance floor.

31. Powai Lake

The science centre offers practical experience with laws of physics, human anatomy, and many other facets of science. The available activities also include regular shows, films, and documentaries.

33. Crawford Market

Crawford Market (officially named Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai) is the largest market in the southern Mumbai. From gifts to groceries and from toys to pets, the market has everything. And it is the best place to visit in Mumbai for shopping.

During British rule, it was a source to buy daily fresh produce. And it’s still a popular place to get good deals on various household goods and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Crawford Market is known for its striking architecture too.

34. Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat is the world's largest open-air laundry. Here, hundreds of washermen and women – dhobis, work their shifts through the day to wash clothes. Porters bring dirty clothes from all over Mumbai and they take them back in their fresh, crisp and spotless state.

The system is well-optimised, and each cloth is coded to be traced back to the client.

This laundry was set up by an association of 50 washers in 1890. And today, around 700 washer families live here. And although some have installed washing and drying machines, most still carry on their work manually.

Dhobi Ghat has maintained much of its old charm and washing methods.
