As we leave from the Sacramento Valley, slowly the road starts to wind and the hills grow around us. Animals graze and bids of prey lazily circle in the skies above. Stop #3 - A light lunch & more

We have made the journey out to wine country, the palate is warmed up and everyone is in fine spirits! Now it's about that time to make sure we're fueled up for the rest of the day. With a couple of options available, we often end up with some tasty burgers, salads or mexican food for lunch. Following from here, a wine tasting at the winery we have lunch at is usually in order before moving on. In other cases lunch will be somewhere different to our second winery, it all depends on you!

As with all great plays, this is where the most important questions are answered such as, "Can I just do this everyday and live off the land with my own winery?" Absolutely!! But until that day comes, we want you to enjoy the present moment with a wonderful view and the perfect tasting to round everything off. Imagine that glass with a lake view, enjoying the sun and just taking everything in with a sense of total relaxation.

25 Best Amador County Wineries & Tasting Rooms 2024

Best Wineries To Visit in Amador County

Best Amador County Wineries, Tasting Rooms and Tours for 2024

Now that we’ve introduced you to Amador County , it’s time to start planning a Winetraveler adventure through the region’s 3,700 acres of vines and more than 40 wineries. The AVA includes two sub-appellations — the Shenandoah Valley of California to the North and Fiddletown to the East.

Once nearly exclusively dedicated to Zinfandel , today Amador County produces a wide array of grapes suited for the warmer climate, especially those of Italian and southern French origin, including: Barbera , Aglianico , Teroldego , Sangiovese , Tempranillo , Graziano, Syrah, Grenache , Mourvèdre and Petit Sirah. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Marsanne can also be found, but in smaller amounts.

Although Amador County is a laid-back region, not all wineries are open for walk-in tastings. Since the pandemic, most wineries pivoted to a seated wine tasting form and, as a result, have instituted a reservation requirement for wine tasting. Call ahead to find out if reservations are required.

The suggestions in this list of Amador County wineries will take readers through the region and offer a cross-section of the wine styles and varieties produced throughout this off-the-beaten-path destination. There is also a plethora of outdoor activities and historical sites in the region that are worth visiting.

Specializing in – Viognier, Rosé, Zinfandel, Red Blends, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petite Sirah

Vista del Mirador, meaning “view from the gazebo” in Spanish, was established on a 60-acre property in Somerset, CA. The founders, Carey and Anna Maria Bailey, were both engineers that graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Their careers after college took them from contributing to our country’s National Security efforts to non-commercial winemaking for 10 years until they decided to officially found Mirador Winery in 2017.

These engineers knew that the environmental conditions of Fair Play AVA made it the optimal location to grow their grapes. They do everything in-house and limit their production to around 500 to 600 cases per year so that they are only distributing the most high-quality wines.

Both their facilities and grounds are spectacular. From the gazebo, you can look out at the pond and see Flat Creek which runs through the vineyard on its way to the Consumnes River. Be sure to check out the tasting room and winemaking facility during your visit as well.

Shadow Ranch Vineyard

7050 Fairplay Rd, Fair Play, CA 95684 – view on map – (530) 620-2785

Shadow Ranch Vineyard is a family-owned winery located on a hilltop property in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The owner and winemaker, Sam Patterson, is all about using his resources. The entire Shadow Ranch winery production focuses on sustainability by using solar power and ensuring their 10 acres of grapes are organically farmed. In 2006, Sam remodeled an old farmhouse on the Shadow ranch property to create a state-of-the-art wine production facility. The other buildings on the grounds date back to 1888, including an old barn that only adds to the beauty and charm of this winery.

The tasting room is also a combination of modern architecture and historical elements of the region. It has a relaxing atmosphere and an extremely knowledgeable staff. Treat yourself to a bottle of wine under the trees while enjoying the view of the rolling vineyards.

Saluti Cellars

7505 Grizzly Flat Rd, Somerset, CA 95684 – view on map – (530) 626-0800

Specializes in – Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah Rosé, Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre

Some how Saluti Cellars manages to do it all: rolling vineyards, scenic duck ponds, wonderfully manicured gardens, wine caves, fountains, both an elegant wedding venue and a rustic one, a home for rescued farm animals, horse rides, bed and breakfasts, each unit with their own fireplace and deck, a spa, and a full exercise gym. And just when you thought they couldn’t be any more impressive, everything is 100% solar powered.

The philosophy of owners, Randy and Tina Rossi, is that practicing sustainability does not mean compromising on customer experience, but deeper thought put into each aspect of the business. They use only organic gardening and ethical ranching methods as well as natural cleaning products on all equipment. The 8 Best Amador County Wineries To Visit

Why should you care about the best Amador County wineries? Some wine lovers may even ask, "Where is Amador County?" Amador County is located in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothill s. Some call it “The Heart of the Mother Lode” because of the gold and silver rush that made this area famous in the 1800's. Amador was once home to the California Gold Rush with numerous gold mines in the region.

Now the area is famous for liquids instead of metals. You’ll be shouting “mother” when you first experience the wine from one of the top wineries that call Amador County home. Wine tasting with breathtaking mountain views is the norm here. While breathing in that fresh, California air can make you feel light and free and….time for another glass of wine.

There are so many great wines in the area, but these are the 8 best Amador County wineries to start with. When you plan your Sierra Foothills wine tasting adventure, remember to include at least a few of these wineries.

Helwig Vineyards & Winery

great amador county winery helwig

Spending a day at Helwig is just what the wine doctor ordered. Here, you’ll be tempted into staying beyond the hour wine tasting and indulge in the sweeping views of the lush vineyards. You can try the picnic Pavilion, visit the wine cave, explore the terraced concert amphitheater, or let the chef select wine and food pairings for you.

If you gaze long enough, you can pretend you’re in Napa, the views are that good! The tastings are just $5 for 6 or 7 wines and the fee is waived if you purchase a bottle. The winery itself is more modern than those in the surrounding area. The winery is also perfect for corporate events and weddings , having designated areas and rooms just for those occasions. Shopping is also a must here as they have a wide variety of olive oil products that include lip balms, soaps, and even seasoned dips.

Some of their most notable wines include their Gold Country Rosé, IditaRed red blend, East Block Zinfandel, and their Sparkling Rosé. This is definitely one of the best Amador County wineries to visit!

Jeff Runquist Wines

The winemaker here is focused on making balanced wines full of vibrant flavor.  A visit to the tasting room means you’ll get to experience some of the robust flavors in their Zinfandel, Primitivo, Barbera, Sangiovese, Dolcetto, and Carbon. You’ll receive a complimentary cheese plate to pair with each of the wines, the wine tasting is also free. We think great wine and free tastings make this one of the best Amador County wineries for visitors.

The tasting room is always busy and a little loud, but the good energy is contagious and so are the consistently good reds. Visitors have been known to go from tasting to wine club member in one swoop.

10 Best Wineries in Amador County to Visit 2023

Amador County is well-known for its gold rush history, but it’s also home to over 40 wineries. Its wine industry began in the 1850s, with a large portion of grapevines in the region dating back to that time.

Situated about 45 miles southeast of Sacramento, this area once well-known as a gold rush region has now become California’s Mecca of winemaking. As home to almost 30 distinct varietals, this region is best known for producing some of the best Zinfandels, Iberian, Sangiovese and Barbera varietals.

In Amador County, you’ll find high-quality wines, particularly reds, alongside jaw-dropping views, and plenty of historic mining towns to explore. So, if you’re looking for some fantastic wineries to relax in with friends and family, here are the 10 best wineries in Amador County you should visit.

Why is Amador County Perfect for Wine?

Any region that grows wine grapes is unique to other areas. The main reason for this is referred to as terroir . The term terroir refers to the environment in which fruit grows. Essentially that means, soil, climate and any other external factors contributing to the taste of the grapes or fruits used in the wine production.

Amador County has a mosaic of various soil types. For the most part, the soils are typically rocky and well-drained. The vines are mostly grown on low vigour rootstalks, which in turn provides a much more natural quality of grapes.

A combination of canopy management, careful pruning and crop thinning keeps the yields small. The average summer day temperature ranges around 30 degrees, creating the basis for balanced yet complex grapes. For the most part, vineyards are farmed by a large diversity of people and are mostly handpicked. All these factors combined, create incredibly unique tasting wines.

Amador’s Old Vines

Another factor that makes Amador wine so robust and exclusively flavorful is the area’s old vines. On average, about 600 acres of the total 2,700 are 60 years or older. Some vineyards even date back to the 19 th century.

It’s no secret that older vines produce richer, more flavorful fruits. This is mostly attributed to the increased concentration of flavor in the older grapes. The more concentrated the grapes are, the more intense and earthier the wines will be. Older vines achieve ripeness quicker, making the grapes reading for harvesting a lot sooner.

Since these vines are deeply rooted in the ground, they can draw in water and nutrients from deeper in the ground. This is the primary secret for the exquisitely tasting Zinfandels found across the region.
