8. Floating Tiki Bar Cruise
In Chicago, we’re one of the few cities where we can dig our toes beneath the sand and jump into the waves to cool off; even with humidity at an all-time high, we’re still far from a tropical paradise with palm trees and coconut-sippy cups.
However, one way is to head to a tiki oasis without spending hundreds on a plane ticket. At this floating tiki bar, you can cruise down the Chicago River while soaking in tropical tunes and the city’s stunning architecture.
This is a unique tiki Chicago booze cruise experience, from bascule bridges to the Tower buildings.

“Booze cruise ” Review of Mystic Blue Cruises - CLOSED
It was a great view of the skyline of chicago. The staff was professional. Security were very efficient and courteous. The downfall was the check in. It was disorganized and it could of been handled better. Other than that it was a nice time. The attendees were standard booze cruise type of people .

Never heard of Mystic Blue and we took a chance with a Groupon. That part was fine, what we found out when we got on board, rather than normal Chicago dinner time/sunset cruises---on this adventure they only had a few select items that were available and of course, everything was $20. 6 chicken wings, $20. Drinks were pretty pricey as well. We've been on Odyssey, Spirit of Chicago and even Seadog. Based on our experience, I would say that Mystic Blue would be the lowest rung on that ladder. IF this is normal. We spoke with some crew members and they mentioned there is normally a buffet, so our cruise was some kind of special deal with less selection. It was OK, the scenery can't be beat and the music on the top deck was consistently hip hop and loud. We enjoyed the upper deck and were clearly the oldest couple on the cruise from what we saw, but that was fine. It just wasn't anything special, food was limited and expensive and the drinks were just plain expensive. We'll stick with Odyssey and Spirit if we do this again.
It's the little things....all the food labels were wrong! Potatoes marked sirloin. When dessert out labels for veggies marked them. Took quite a while to be able to get a second drink. Food was fair. Once we found our way to top deck & bar right there was enjoyable. But they crammed way too many of us on there so no where to sit. Staff friendly. Nice touch to give a cookie on way out.
There are 4 Lake Michigan cruise ships operated by the same company - Mystic Blue, Spirit, Odyssey, Seadog, and Elite. Spirit sounded like it emphasized partying/dance; Odyssey is fancy, offering a table-service meal but also having a dress code (no blue jeans); and Elite is a private charter yacht (expensive!); and Seadog is a speed/thrill ride. For a casual Sunday brunch with my 85 year old mother, 9 and 12 year old kids, and 5 more adults, Mystic Blue was just right. FOOD: It was buffet food and just ok. Hot and plentiful. Not a lot of variety but I enjoyed the beef. The chicken pieces varied in saltiness and moistness but we found some good pieces. The picky kids ate the buffet chicken. The children's menu was pathetic and slow; fortunately it didn't preclude the kids eating from the buffet as well. The dessert buffet was good with lots of choices including brownies and pecan pie bites and they didn't run out. You can serve yourself from the buffet as soon as you board the ship, no waiting. SERVICE: The service was excellent. Albeit it was a bit slow, but that was likely the kitchen/bar, not the waitress. The waitress was always available to bring drinks --first champagne and then bar drinks and we asked for coffee/tea at the end. In addition, when my mom went up to the viewing area (up 2 flights of stairs) and I prepped a dessert plate to take up to her, the waitress offered to take it up for me. I declined but she was up top later and took the plate down for us. We tipped generously. CRUISE: We had a window table with terrific views. We spent most of our time here as it was convenient to eating, drinking, and chatting. The bathroom was up one level and easy to reach, small but clean. Up 2 levels is a lounge area with lots of space & seating and very cushy chairs. It was very attractive -- looked just like the pictures on the website. Overall, the cruise experience was fantastic and just what I wanted for a lovely Sunday afternoon with my mom. Afterwards, we strolled along and enjoyed Navy Pier. BOOKING/COST: I booked over the phone and the final cost was higher than just the cruise price x # of people which I assumed it would be because of taxes. When the phone rep said it was inclusive of fees & taxes, I questioned what the fees were and if I could avoid them by booking myself online. He said it was an admin fee and would be charged no matter how I booked. He was dismissive about them and did not break down the cost. It wasn't until I confirmed the purchase and received an email receipt that I saw how much the fee was and it was huge. I strongly suspect that I could have bought tickets at the Navy Pier kiosk and not been charged the fee. The 2nd annoying part of booking is that you don't just buy the cruise tickets. You have to pay extra if you want a guaranteed window seat (and I figured they wouldn't give you a window seat unless they had to if you didn't pay extra for it). Drinks are extra after the first glass of champagne and they will try to sell you boarding photographs too. There were other "extras" you could pay for too. Overall, we all really enjoyed the cruise. The food isn't anything to write home about but it is good enough. The booking process should be improved so they are more honest about the cost. The cost was high. Window seats made the experience feel more special.
We used the Mystic Blue for a Friends Reception Cruise. Reservations and guest services do not give the same information, we were told there was unlimited alcohol for 20.00 per person since it was a event, when we arrived it changed to 60.00 per person. THis was discouraging, however, the food was good, the DJ and servers were enjoyable and the trip was smooth. Would consider again if the reservations could get it together.
