Performance Metrics

Fundamental metrics, emotional appeal.

Note: Specifications for classic cars are given to the best of our ability, considering the limited and variant data available.

Unveiling the Quintessential Family Cruiser: The 1987 GMC Safari Van

The 1987 GMC Safari Van stands as a testament to the era of family road trips, drive-in movies, and the burgeoning need for versatile transportation. Born from the stables of General Motors, this workhorse was GMC's answer to the growing demand for spacious and comfortable multi-purpose vehicles. It was a time when the minivan began to redefine the American driveway, and the Safari was at the forefront of this revolution. A notable moment in its history was its role as a reliable and preferred choice for small businesses and families alike, cementing its place in the fabric of 80s automotive culture.

Design and Innovation

The exterior of the GMC Safari Van was characterized by its boxy yet functional design. Its broad, confident stance and pronounced grille were complemented by the wraparound glass on the rear quarters, offering drivers enhanced visibility. Inside, the Safari boasted a utilitarian yet comfortable cabin, with materials designed to withstand the rigors of daily use. The plush seating and woodgrain accents on some models offered a touch of elegance to the otherwise purpose-built interior. Technologically, it featured amenities like power windows and locks, which were considered advanced for its time. The Safari was available in a variety of color options, with shades like Midnight Blue and Apple Red being among the popular choices. It came in various body styles, including cargo and passenger configurations, with the extended wheelbase version gaining popularity for its additional space.

Historical Significance

The GMC Safari Van's impact on automotive design was significant, as it offered a blend of passenger comfort with cargo utility that few other vehicles could match at the time. Its all-wheel-drive option, introduced later in its life cycle, set it apart from many competitors and provided a level of versatility that was uncommon in vans of that era. The Safari's influence can be seen in the design evolution of subsequent minivans and utility vehicles.

Performance and Handling

Performance-wise, the 1987 Safari was equipped with a robust 4.3-liter V6 engine that delivered adequate power for both city commuting and highway cruising. While not built for speed, it provided a respectable top speed and acceleration that could handle the demands of fully loaded travel. On the road, the Safari's ride quality was known for being smooth and stable, absorbing bumps with ease while maintaining composure on windy roads. Drivers often praised the van for its commanding driving position and clear road visibility.

Ownership Experience

As a daily driver, the GMC Safari Van excelled in its ability to adapt to various roles—from hauling cargo to shuttling kids to soccer practice. Maintenance and reliability were strong suits for this van, with many components being easy to access and repair by the average owner. Its longevity is evidenced by the number of these vans that are still on the road today.

The GMC Safari has had its share of screen time, appearing in numerous films and TV shows as the go-to vehicle for families and work crews. Although not known for breaking speed records, it did set a standard for what a multi-use van could be. Criticisms were few but typically revolved around its fuel economy and size when navigating tight urban spaces.

Collector's Information

Today, the 1987 GMC Safari Van holds a unique place in collector circles. While not as coveted as some classic cars, its value lies in its nostalgia and utility. A well-preserved Safari can fetch anywhere from a few thousand dollars up to higher amounts depending on condition, mileage, and originality. With production numbers in the tens of thousands annually during its prime years, finding one on the market is still feasible. Price trends suggest that well-maintained models are slowly appreciating as they become rarer and more desirable for collectors seeking an emblem of 80s automotive history.

The 1987 GMC Safari Van may not have been the flashiest vehicle on the road, but it was undeniably an integral part of many families' lives during its heyday. Its blend of practicality, comfort, and reliability made it a beloved fixture in American automotive culture. As we look back on this iconic van, we're reminded that sometimes the most ordinary vehicles have the most extraordinary stories to tell.

I'm trying to find a rear headliner for my 2004 Cargo Astro. It came with about 3/4 or 2/3 of a headliner, and I just need the rear section. I've got some parts people in my town stumped, we've been through a couple websites that just don't really outline the possibility of finding this missing section of headliner, not sure it was ever made for the cargo. http://www.wholesalegmpartsonline.c...odel=14478&modelYear=2004&ukey_category=19402 https://www.scribd.com/doc/4742361/GMC-Astro-Safari-Parts-Catalogue I've dug through some junkyards, and have seen many variations of headliners through different model years. My attempt at removing one that I thought would fit, resulted in pure disintegration of the headliner. Does anyone have any knowledge of a part number for this piece of headliner, made for an extended model, no A/C or Heat ducts, just a simple headliner panel...? Am I searching in vain...? posting.php?mode=post&f=13#

gmc safari parts catalogue

JY is the way to go. You can practice removal on the crappy ones so you are best prepared for the real deal. Shouldn't disintegrate, have you tested it?

gmc safari parts catalogue

what disintegrated, the backing or the headliner material? Replacing the headliner material isn't really all that difficult, nor that expensive. Getting the headliner out of my Bonneville and replacing that was a PITA, but it turned out really well and I did it all for less than 50 bucks.

gmc safari parts catalogue

I have never seen a rear section for the 2/3 headliner that ends at the rear of the sliding door. You will probably need the rear section that goes from behind the front doors all the way to the rear as found on the passenger models. A note on the 2nd gen headliner The headliner is held in place by the pillar trim panels. You will need a T50 torx bit socket to remove the seat belt from the B & C-pillars to remove the trim. The D-pillar trim is held with screws into tabs that are welded onto the pillar. These tabs are not found in the cargo models. The rear top trim piece is held on by screws into brackets that are riveted to the upper frame. These brackets are also not found in the cargo models. Once you have the pillar trim and dome lights removed. The headliner is held by 6 pieces of double lock strip. Be careful trying to release the double lock as it will pull off the headliner easily if to much effort is used. The double lock can be glued back into place though. The headliner form is usually quite durable. The fabric and foam are normally what go bad but are easily redone.

gmc safari parts catalogue

By double lock he means a stronger version of velcro, I had to get one from another van for my 89 and the double lock (velcro) I took a long screw driver I mean very long flat tip screw driver made sure I had long sleeves cause the headliner itself is made of fiberglass and it will make you itch and reached up under the headliner and pried the velcro apart . Now to take it home you will have to gently turn it sideways to carry it then put it in whatever vehicle you have (something that can carry a sheet of plywood) as you can not bend this stuff without destroying it. You will have to recover this but thats not hard to do. Make sure you get the other side of the velcro since you most likely need them. Good luck and take pictures.

Thanks everyone... I was really hoping for a part number, or a year and model that contains the piece that I estimate to be a fit for my '04 cargo. Thanks to MI_Ghost, it appears I don't need to search any further. Looks like I'm going to just build a panel at this point. The one that crumbled on me a the junkyard, just came apart in my hand in pieces, the backing material, not the fabric, it probably was exposed to moisture and baking in the summers for unknown years. Thanks for the help.

Yeah most don't disintegrate in contact, so that was a weird one. Probably easier to stick up a thin 4x8 panel and call it good huh. Please post pics!

Thanks Gavio, but I'm still stumped. Here is the website that I'm searching, and I cannot find any headliner that splits behind the sliding door: http://www.wholesalegmpartsonline.c...odel=14478&modelYear=2003&ukey_category=19402 There is also this link, the headliner is found on page 19, but that part number is specifically for the '85 Astro: https://www.scribd.com/doc/4742361/GMC-Astro-Safari-Parts-Catalogue My fabricator ordered the rear headliner from one of his contacts, but it didn't fit, as it wasn't made for the extended van. That is probably the case for the '85 Astro part found above. Between the 2 of us, we've spent a dozen hours looking online, and we're getting nowhere. I'm just not sure who has this information...!! -- I'll have pics eventually, unfortunately I have to drive an hour to get to my friend's house where the van is.

Junkyard... or build yourself. Geographically speaking, where ya at?

I may have found it..! I have a 2004 Cargo: http://gmcparts.royaltucson.com/a/C...51505_5975427/ROOF-INTERIOR-TRIM/GG85176.html Part number is the same for 2003 thru 2005 extended cargo/passenger, base, LS, or LT, : 88957121 Strangely, I don't find any year/model that shows A/C or Heat vents in the rear panel, so I'm not 100% sure if I'm getting the right info just yet. I'm in western WY, my closest junkyards are in Idaho Falls, ID, and I've been through them all. Nothing there. Salt Lake City is my next option, about 6 hours away. However, my friend thinks he can find one with a part number, so we'll try again with this part number.

All Safari/ Astros from 95 up are extended, only GEN1 came in Shorty version. Rule of thumb... If the slider track touches the taillight, its a shorty. Otherwise its extended. I was hoping you would be close to one of my travel destinations, I'd grab one locally and drop it off (dime a dozen in SoCal). Unfortunately you are not even close.. sorry bud.

That explains why I have never seen one. Not much experience with the 03-05 on my end. The yards around me are mostly 98-00 stock. Salt Lake City has a couple huge yards out in West Valley on 201

I may have found it..! I have a 2004 Cargo: http://gmcparts.royaltucson.com/a/Chevr ... 85176.html Part number is the same for 2003 thru 2005 extended cargo/passenger, base, LS, or LT, : 88957121 Click to expand...

I looked into a lot of different ways to do a headliner and the curve of the roof makes it hard to find a product that will curve to the roof. There are plastics that would curve but materials will not stay glued to them. One of the guys here used like a hard wood in strips like flooring. Now there is a card board type material that I was told can be wetted down by spray bottle and shaped but it is prone to cracking but I have not tried it. Its the same stuff used on the back of cheap furniture like dressers and entertainment centers but again I have not tried it. Its possible there are other materials but I gave up the search due to finding a used headliner locally. Either way please post pictures of whatever you go with for others to use as guidance. Mark

gmc safari parts catalogue

A thin sheet of LDPE(low density poly ethylene) costs about 60ish bucks for a 4x8 sheet and is very plyable. I have been using it for years as fender liners on my race cars. It would easily mold to the contours of the roof and wont crack or break. And for the tight bends, a heat gun works nicely. I have never tried glueing anything to it so I cant testify to that but I cant imagine why not with a quality glue.
