Visiting Halong Bay: tips to plan your cruise

travel to ha long bay

Dotted with jagged limestone pinnacles,  Halong Bay  is one of Vietnam’s biggest attractions. The vast majority of its 10 million visitors a year arrive aboard day and overnight cruises.

The multitude of trips on offer can be overwhelming: here’s the skinny on Halong Bay to get you started.

A collection of tour boats and cruise ships passing by limestone islands in Halong Bay

Make the most of your visit

Halong Bay retains much of the otherworldly magic conjured up by 1969 jungle-clad islands and islets rising from deep emerald waters. Getting there is increasingly straightforward, thanks to the 2018 building of an expressway connecting Halong City and Hanoi , and the opening of Van Don International Airport (with flights to Ho Chi Minh City , and international flights coming soon) a mere 50km from Halong Bay.

But the bay's popularity has taken its toll. Concerned about overcrowding, water pollution and litter, the Vietnamese government has imposed strict regulations.

Today, boats must follow one of five prescribed routes through the bay, meaning overnight cruises leaving roughly from the same place at the same time play follow-the-leader as they hit the major highlights of the bay almost in frustrating concert. In addition, swimming is only allowed at a few designated beaches, with drones surveilling the skies to make sure boat captains comply.

Especially with these rules in place, your choice of cruise can make or break your Halong Bay experience.

Luxury cruises

Want to spoil yourself? Halong Bay has some sumptuous cruise options that are basically luxury hotels on water. You’re paying for the experience of five-star amenities here – not for any particular divergence from the typical cruise itinerary – but if you want to live it up from a swanky sun-lounger while watching the sun set over a vista of craggy jungle-topped islands, you can’t really go wrong.

For a luxury cruise, bank on spending around US$300–350 for a cabin.

Pros:  It’s a serious treat. While the cost may seem high, it typically includes higher quality meals and amenities on board, such as a spa or gym, as well as entry to Halong Bay.

Cons: Those who are after good value should probably look at midrange options. Overnight trips (marketed as two-day/one-night trips) usually involve 24 hours or less on the actual boat, which can rankle given what you pay for the experience.

Budget and midrange cruises

Most Halong Bay visitors go for midrange or budget cruises, but there is a huge range when it comes to price and value for money. At one end of the scale are some ultra-budget boats where conditions are rustic at best; at the other are some excellent midrange options offering cosy hotel-style cabins, knowledgeable on-board tour guides and kayaking stops. If purse strings are tight, for facilities, comfort and safety considerations, it’s sometimes better to choose a day cruise with a midrange operator rather than a bargain-basement overnight trip.

Budget cruise prices start from US$60 per person for a day trip. Paying between US$110 and US$130 should get you a worthwhile overnight midrange cruise.

Pros: Competition is fierce, which means plenty of operators add freebies into the itinerary, such as kayaking and private minibus transfers from Hanoi.

Cons: You have to wade through a lot of options, which can be confusing. It’s worth doing your pre-trip research.

Day cruises

If you’re pressed for time, do as many locals do and see Halong Bay on a day cruise from Tuan Chau Marina in Halong City . Cruise boats can be rented by the hour (around US$30 per hour for a boat that accommodates up to 20 passengers) or you can join other passengers aboard a four- to six-hour cruise for about US$50 per person. Options vary greatly, so check whether the price includes lunch.

Pros: Day cruises are cheap and easily organised tours right on the spot in Halong City, plus there’s free entertainment on board provided by karaoke.

Cons: Can be crowded and noisy, with only time enough for a few stops. Did we mention the karaoke?

Tan stalactites and stalagmites are illuminated by red, green and yellow lights inside Hang Thien Cung, a cave at Halong Bay.

Most decent midrange Halong Bay cruises will offer an hour or so of kayaking (some charging an extra fee). Paddling around the karsts allows you to experience the limestone towers from a completely different angle: up close and without the constant thrum of an engine in the background.

For more experienced kayakers, there are also kayak-only trips. These trips are run by a handful of operators based in nearby Lan Ha Bay (off Cat Ba Island ) rather than Halong Bay itself, though Lan Ha’s islet-scattered sea has as much wow factor as Halong Bay and is much less visited.

Full-day kayaking trips from Cat Ba Island cost between US$25 and US$30 per person.

Pros: In one of Southeast Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, a kayak trip is a way of escaping the crowds.

Cons: On a full kayaking tour, you’re only going to see a sliver of the area. To see more, it’s a better idea to take a cruise that includes a kayaking stop.

One of the most important reasons to steer away from the ultra-budget cruises is safety. After a boat sinking (and the loss of 12 lives) in 2011, new safety regulations were brought in for Halong Bay cruise boats, but scrimping on safety does still go on with some fly-by-night operators.

In particular, check that any kayaking stops are accompanied by a guide. Because of the variable and surprisingly strong currents close to the karst islands, a safety-conscious operator won’t allow kayakers to paddle off from the boat by themselves.

Booking tips

Most trips leave from Hanoi, but you can also base yourself in Halong City. When you're booking, bear these tips in mind:

  • The Halong Bay entry fee is US$13 per person for a day cruise and US$25 for an overnight cruise. This is generally included in your ticket, though it's worth double-checking for the cheapest cruises. Activities like kayaking and island bike rides may cost extra.
  • When comparing prices, check whether a transfers between Hanoi and Halong Bay are included, and if so, whether it’s one-way or round-trip, and if it uses the new expressway or not.
  • While the Ha Long–Hai Phong Expressway has cut travel time between Hanoi and Halong Bay to 2½ hours, that really only applies to private vehicles which don’t stop to pick up any other passengers and which don’t make the usual 30-minute comfort stop halfway through the journey. Aboard a shuttle bus, plan for a three to 3½-hour ride.
  • Check closely to see whether overnight cruise rates are priced by cabin or by person. Single travellers should expect to pay 70-80% of the full cabin price.
  • The itinerary on a one-night cruise can be very packed, with shore excursions, kayaking, swimming and hiking all included, leaving little time to actually just sit and watch the amazing scenery during daylight hours. If you have the time, a two-night itinerary is much more leisurely, with the bonus of visiting sights with fewer people around.

Arranging a tour

Some recommended operators:

  • Vega Travel offers good-value overnight and two-night tours with comfortable cabins, and kayaking included. Highly recommended by travellers.
  • Cat Ba Ventures runs tours out of Cat Ba Island, taking in both Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay.
  • Indochina Sails has a traditional Chinese junk that’s been fully fitted out with all mod cons.
  • Handspan Adventure Travel has a proper sailing ship, so you don’t have to put up with that pesky engine hum. Handspan also runs full kayaking tours in nearby Lan Ha Bay.
  • Hai Au Aviation offers Vietnam’s only seaplane flights, including a 25-minute scenic flight over Halong Bay which presents a completely different perspective. From the air, the islands truly do resemble the undulating body of a dragon, the meaning of 'Halong'.
  • L’Azalée Private Premium Cruise has the bay’s only single-cabin cruiser for an ultra-luxe experience, but expect to pay dearly for the privilege.

One of the best times to visit Halong Bay is November – there are blue skies aplenty, temperatures are moderate and there’s a good chance of calm seas. From May to September, tropical storms can whip up without much warning. This is also high season in Halong, particularly from June to mid-August when domestic tourism peaks.

February to April is often cool and drizzly, and the fog can make visibility low, though also adds an ethereal atmosphere. Year-round, cruises and tourist boats sometimes need to alter their itineraries, or trips can be cancelled with little warning depending on the weather and sea conditions. If you’re booking a cruise, check the fine print for the refund procedures.

Ha Long Bay Travel Guide: Things To Do & How To Plan Your Visit

Boat at Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam’s most beautiful destinations, famous for its unique scenery, vibrant marine life, and rich history. Located in the Gulf of Tonkin on the northeast coast of Vietnam , it consists of a dramatic limestone karst landscape with 1,600 forest-topped islands. Its sheer beauty and biodiversity have made it a World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

With such critical acclaim, it’s no wonder that Ha Long Bay is one of the most-visited places in Vietnam. No trip to the country would be complete without paying a visit — here’s all you need to know about planning the perfect trip.

Inside this Ha Long Bay travel guide:

What’s so special about Ha Long Bay?

  • How to get there
  • What to see and do
  • How long should you spend in the bay?
  • How to choose the best tour for you

Is Ha Long Bay worth visiting?

There are many things that make Ha Long Bay a truly unique destination, and well-deserving of its UNESCO Heritage Site status. Here are just a few of them.

The limestone karst landscape

Shaped by the constant movement of water over millenia, the bay’s dramatic cliffs and outcrops are believed to have been formed 275 million years ago. These limestone pillars stand as proud sentinels of this otherworldly landscape; each one full of caves, hollows, and pockets large enough for boats to seek refuge during storms. Local tradition tells tales of heroic fishermen who used the terrain to their advantage against invading pirates.

The biodiversity

Ha Long Bay is home to an incredibly diverse ecosystem with an abundance of plant and animal life. Over 100 species of fish live in the waters here, as well as coral reefs, seabirds and turtles. There are plenty of opportunities for visitors to witness a wide array of these animals in their natural habitat through activities such as scuba diving, kayaking, and boat cruises.

Legends of dragons

Legend states that Vietnam was once under attack by invaders in ships, and so the Gods sent dragons to protect the local people. The dragons dropped emeralds into the ocean (the islets we see today) which created a barrier that prevented the invaders from reaching the shore. Ha Long Bay directly translates to “where the dragon descends to the sea.”

Ha Long Bay

How to get to Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is located about 170km east of Hanoi , Vietnam’s vibrant capital city. As Ha Long Bay is such a popular destination — attracting 6 million tourists each year — getting there from Hanoi is incredibly easy. You’ll find tons of tour operators offering Ha Long Bay excursions, as well as plenty of buses, minivans and private transfer options.

The easiest way to visit Ha Long Bay is by joining a guided tour. Typically, they’ll pick you up from your accommodation in Hanoi and transfer you to the coast, where you’ll be taken into Ha Long Bay itself by boat. You’ll need to choose between a day trip or a multi-day cruise — I really recommend a 2-night cruise (more on that later) but if you’re short on time, a day trip or 1-night cruise will still allow you to see some of the bay.

If you’d rather skip the guided cruises and do things on your own terms, make your way to Ha Long City, from where you can arrange things yourself. Buses running between Hanoi and Ha Long City start from about 9 USD and take 2 – 3 hours. Perhaps you’ll decide to stay by the sea and spend a few days enjoying activities in the bay, such as kayaking, caving and rock climbing.

What to see and do in Ha Long Bay

On top of the incredible scenery, there are tons of exciting things to do in Ha Long Bay, including kayaking, hiking, caving, rock climbing and more.

Kayaking in Ha Long Bay allows you to get up close and personal with those towering limestone formations. As you push your way through the water, you’ll feel the sheer scale of the rocks looming above you, and will truly appreciate the dramatic scenery of the bay.

Island hopping

There are more than 1600 islets in Ha Long Bay, formed by 500 million years of tropical downpours eroding the delicate limestone. The majority of these islands are uninhabited, complete with secluded beaches, lush jungles and mischievous monkeys. Spend some time checking out a few of the bay’s islands.

Sunset Ha Long Bay

Visit a floating village

Fishermen have lived in floating villages in Ha Long Bay for centuries, living and working in harmony with the sea. The floating villages really are wonderful to witness, thanks to their vibrant colours and charming character.

Ha Long Bay Floating Village

Hidden within the bay’s limestone towers are countless caves waiting to be explored. Many of these are enormous and feature interesting mineral formations that hang from the ceiling. Some of the caves can only be accessed by water, so you’ll need to reach them by kayak — this gives you the opportunity to get up really close and personal.

There are many islands in Ha Long Bay which contain forest or coastal hiking trails. Many of these trails will take you up high, offering incredible birds-eye views over the surrounding landscape. The rugged Cat Ba Island is a World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve, providing refuge for golden-headed langurs, civets, macaques, hornbills and a myriad of other fascinating species. Why not make the 2-hour hike to Ngu Lam peak, which showcases brilliant views over the jungle?

Hiking Cat Ba Island

Rock climbing

Ha Long Bay’s rugged, limestone rock faces offer ample opportunity for rock climbing. In some places, you’ll even be able to reward your hard work by jumping into the waters below! Luy Tam Biet, Cerro Torre, Laughing Dog Wall and La Plage des Pirates are thought to be some of the best locations for rock climbing in the bay.

Ha Long Bay

Admire the scenery

While there are loads of things to do in and around Ha Long Bay, don’t forget to take a beat to relax and admire the epic scenery around you. After all, the bay is renowned for its stunning landscape! If you’re on a 2-night cruise, you’ll have plenty of time to relax between the days’ activities and chill out on deck. Sunrise and sunset offer some of the best views — be sure to watch the changing colours of the sun dance across the sea.

Dawn at Ha Long Bay

How long should you spend in Ha Long Bay?

In my opinion, 2 nights and 3 days is the ideal length of time to spend in Ha Long Bay.

A multi-day cruise will get you away from the day trippers and enable you to explore quieter parts of the bay. The Vietnamese government has recently cracked down on the number of boats allowed to anchor up overnight, which will make you one of the lucky few.

That being said, the itinerary on 1-night cruises can be quite packed, with caving, kayaking, swimming and hiking, which leaves little time to actually sit and observe the incredible scenery. If you have the time, a 2-night, 3-day itinerary is much more relaxed, with the bonus of getting even further off the beaten path.

If the idea of staying on a ship overnight doesn’t appeal, or you simply don’t have the time to do so, please know that a day trip will still give you a good taste of Ha Long Bay. However, keep in mind that boats carrying day trippers seem to congregate in the same places, which does spoil the beauty somewhat.

Ha Long Bay

How to choose the best Ha Long Bay cruise for you

There are hundreds of tour operators in Hanoi and Ha Long City offering budget half-day trips to 5-star multi-day cruises and everything in between. There’s also a huge variety of vessels and vibes to choose from: elegant cruise ships, junk boats carrying party-going backpackers, yachts with kayakers and hikers, and more.

There’s something for all budgets and tastes, but it can be a challenge to pick one due to the overwhelming amount of choice. Here are some tips for finding a tour operator that’s right for you.

Decide on the duration: The first thing you’ll need to decide on is how long you want your trip to Ha Long Bay to be. Will you go for a day trip or a multi-day excursion?

Decide on the activities: There are adventure cruises that will take you kayaking and hiking, leisurely cruises that simply sail along and occasionally stop at beaches, party cruises aimed at young backpackers who love to drink, and more.

Decide on the standard : The standard of your cruise will ultimately depend on how much you want to spend. There are 5-star luxury cruises with onboard spas, budget options with basic cabins, and everything in between.

Do your research: Once you’ve pinpointed the kind of cruise you want in terms of duration, standard and activities offered, start by doing some research. Search online, ask at your accommodation, visit some tour agencies in Hanoi, or ask other travellers for recommendations. Viator and GetYourGuide are also good places to look.

Read online reviews: Take time to read online reviews and testimonials from past customers. These will give you a better sense of what to expect from tour operators and how they perform in terms of quality, customer service and activities offered.

Here are just a few of the many Ha Long Bay tours out there, each catering to different interests:

Is Ha Long Bay even worth visiting? After all, hasn’t it been loved to death?

While it can get busy with tourist-clad cruise ships, I personally feel that yes, Ha Long Bay is absolutely worth visiting . The beauty of the bay is truly unparalleled, and whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for a second trip, there’s always something new to discover among its 1600 islets.

However, I think it’s best if you’re able to stay overnight — preferably two nights — as you’ll be sticking with the crowds otherwise. The ability to cruise away from the other boats, go hiking on the islands and kayak in secluded coves is what made my time exploring Ha Long Bay so magical.

Sail Through Ha Long Bay's Dreamy Seascape

These lush emerald and turquoise waters harbor more than a thousand small islands.

Even in a country with the diversity of Vietnam , the spectacular seascape at Ha Long Bay can stun the most powerful into humility.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is in northeastern Vietnam’s Gulf of Tonkin, in Quang Ninh Province. The lush emerald and turquoise waters harbor over 1,600 mostly uninhabited—and thereby undisturbed—islands and islets, according to UNESCO.

In Vietnamese, Ha Long means “descending dragon.” Dragons play a prominent role in Vietnamese culture, and the most popular legend has it that one such creature and her children descended from heaven to defend the Viet people from invaders, spraying fire and emeralds or jade. She and her children then stayed on Earth.

The jewels eventually formed towering limestone formations, and over millennia, their protective crags and jagged edges evolved into the backdrop of green islands, towers, and water relished by visitors. A nearby bay, Bai Tu Long, refers to the children of the dragon.

“These legends strike a chord with Vietnamese beliefs and history in two ways,” says Hanh Tran, lecturer of South and Southeast Asian studies at the University of California, Berkeley. “First, the history of fighting against invaders. Second, the belief that Viet people are descended from a dragon father (Lac Long Quan) and a fairy mother (Au Co), and that there is a sacred, hidden power to support them in their war efforts.”

That’s not to reduce the charm of Ha Long Bay to the fanciful. From a scientific viewpoint, it’s remarkable as “a very evolved, very advanced, unusual looking karst landscape,” says Robert Brinkmann, professor of geology, environment, and sustainability at Hofstra University in New York. Most such formations are on land, such as in Florida or Puerto Rico, and not on the water.

“What’s unusual about the karst towers at Ha Long Bay is that such a beautiful place inspires not just geologists, but artists, science, and painters to come together to understand the landscape,” Brinkmann adds.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

How to Get There

Ha Long Bay is 103 miles (165 kilometers) from Hanoi (formerly known as Thang Long, “Ascending Dragon.”) It’s accessible by bus, taxi, motorbikes, ferry, hydrofoil, and private tour companies. You can also take a Ha Long Bay transfer directly from the airport. To cut the journey from up to four hours down to about 45 minutes, consider a helicopter or seaplane. A tour company from Hanoi is highly recommended, as most people at Ha Long Bay will be on tourist boats anyway.

How to Visit

Most visitors take an overnight boat tour of Ha Long Bay to experience at least one sunset and one ethereal sunrise. “You can stay closest to the water and the limestone islets as well as do activities such as kayaking, swimming, and visiting fabulous caves,” says Tran Trong Kien, CEO of TMG, a travel company in Asia.

Megan Hardesty, co-founder of Cohica Travel , seconds kayaking. “Many boats offer this as part of the cruise, but a lot (especially the big ones) do not. It was amazing—one of those experiences that forces you to be completely in the moment. The limestone cliffs just tower above you when you're floating alone on the calm water.”

To get off the beaten path, Kien recommends taking a seaplane, which are run by Hai Au Aviation, a TMG subsidiary. “At the moment, cruising in Ha Long Bay is limited to just five routes, but flying with seaplanes, you get to view the whole bay and admire its grandness and the amazing formations of the islets.”

When to Visit

The best time to go is from March to May or September to November, which is generally a good time to visit Vietnam to avoid the extreme heat. Vietnamese summers bring monsoons, and winter can be cloudy and cool (50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit).

About Ha Long Bay & why is it famous?

Ha Long Bay is popular worldwide for its beauty, UNESCO status , and also its title as one of the new ‘seven natural wonders’ of the world. Because of this popularity, it can be very busy. Lan Ha Bay is a great alternative for peace and tranquility and is equally as beautiful as Ha Long Bay.

Lan Ha Bay is an extension of Ha Long Bay but is further away from the mainland, meaning fewer people (and boats) journey here. Another positive feature of Lan Ha Bay is that you are more likely to find white sandy stretches of beach here than in Ha Long Bay.

How to Get to Ha Long Bay

By Bus Ha Long Bay is located 2.5-3 hours to the east of Hanoi . Although, it is good to keep in mind that if traveling by bus, you should add an extra hour to the travel time. Most cruises will include a transfer from Hanoi; however, if they don’t, it’s easy to book your own bus .

By Train It is also possible to take a 7-hour train from Hanoi. However, there is only one train a day that leaves at 4.55 AM.

Best Time to Visit

To see the scenery at its most spectacular, it is advised to visit when it is warm and sunny. March to May, and September to November, are both good periods to visit. During this time, it will be dry and sunny but will be a little cooler than in the peak summer months.

Avoid visiting between December and March, as winters in the north of Vietnam can be surprisingly cold and overcast.

Ha Long Bay routes and tickets

Tickets are available at two international ports in Ha Long City: Tuan Chau International Port and Ha Long International Port.

  • Tuan Chau International Port is situated on Tuan Chau Island, which is 12 kilometers from the center of Ha Long City.
  • Ha Long International Port has been operational since 2019 and is located in the heart of Ha Long City. While it is more accessible, it has fewer active boats and ships compared to the other port.

To avoid confusion, it’s worth noting that cruise tickets consist of three parts. The left side of the ticket covers the daily entry fee to the port itself, which costs 40,000 VND (approximately 1.7 USD) for all tickets. The right section of the ticket displays the price of the chosen tour route, ranging from 290,000 to 790,000 VND (12.3 to 33.6 USD). Lastly, the top of the ticket lists the names of the attractions you will visit during your tour.

Five daily tours are available to explore Ha Long Bay. Each tour is designed around a specific theme with designated stops and activities on the bay. Here’s a summary of the five routes, including their prices, attraction names, and themes, to help you select the most suitable option based on your needs and interests.

Route 1: Van Canh Reserve Park (4 hours) This is the shortest route and is suitable for a half-day visit. Highlights of the route include cave sightseeing and kayaking. Tickets include visits to Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave, Cho Da Island, Ba Hang Cave, Dinh Huong Island, and Trong Mai Island. Ticket price: 290,000 VND (12.3 USD)/4 hours.

Route 2: Caves Reserve Center (6 hours or 3D2N) This route is available as both half-day tours or 3-day 2-night tours. It’s the only route that offers a comprehensive experience, including cave visits, kayaking, swimming, sightseeing, and overnight stays on the bay. The route includes visits to Soi Sim Island, Ti Top Island, Sung Sot Cave, Bo Nau Cave, Luon Grotto, Ho Dong Tien Cave, Trong Cave, Trinh Nu Cave, and Me Cung Cave. Ticket price: 290,000 VND (12.3 USD)/6 hours or 790,000 VND (33.6 USD)/3D2N.

Route 3: Sea Culture Reserve Center (6 – 8 hours, 2D1N, or 3D2N) This route emphasizes cultural experiences and cave exploration. Like Route 2, you can choose between half-day tours or 3-day 2-night tours for an overnight experience on the Bay. The route includes visits to Cua Van Floating Cultural Center, Rung Truc Zone (Bamboo Forest Zone), Tien Ong Cave, Ang Du Oasis, Ba Ham Lake, and Ba Men Temple. Ticket price: 240,000 VND (10.2 USD)/6-8 hours or 540,000 VND (23 USD)/2D1N or 690,000 VND (29.4 USD)/3D2N.

Route 4: Sea Entertainment Reservation and Development Center (8 hours, 2D1N, or 3D2N) This is the longest route and focuses on relaxation experiences. It offers a wide range of enjoyable activities to enhance visitors’ vacation experiences, including cave exploration, visits to floating fishing villages, and kayaking. Specifically, this route includes visits to Co Cave, Thay Cave, Cong Do Island, Cap La Cave, Tung – Ang Cong Do Bioreserve, Hon Xep Park, and Vung Vien Floating Fishing Village. Ticket price: 240,000 VND (10.2 USD)/8 hours or 540,000 VND (23 USD)/2D1N or 690,000 VND (29.4 USD)/3D2N.

Route 5: This package offers a similar route to Route 1, with an additional stop on Cat Ba Island. However, this route is not frequently operated due to low demand.

In summary, Route 1 is best suited for a half-day tour. Routes 2, 3, and 4 offer overnight stays on the bay, with Route 2 providing the most comprehensive experience, Route 3 focusing more on cultural experiences while limiting water sports activities, and Route 4 catering to more luxurious and leisurely vacations.

Important notes

The ticket prices mentioned above do not include boat rental fees. The prices listed will be supplemented by a boat rental fee, which varies based on the duration of the chosen route.

  • Route 1 (4 hours): 150,000 VND (6.4 USD)/pax
  • Route 2 (6 hours): 200,000 VND (8.5 USD)/pax
  • Routes 3 and 4 (8 hours): 350,000 VND (15 USD)/pax

Children aged 7 to under 16 years old receive a 50% discount (a boat rental fee is applicable).

The highlighted attractions on Ha Long Bay

  • Trong Mai Islet : Two giant rocks resembling cuddling or kissing chickens have become the enduring symbol of Ha Long Bay. This islet, set amid the expansive waters of the bay, has inspired countless artists with its romantic essence against the backdrop of the natural landscape. Keep an eye out for this iconic sight as you travel past it.
  • Cua Van Fishing Village : Selected as one of the top 10 most beautiful villages on Earth by the Road Affair Blog, Cua Van Fishing Village is a quaint settlement nestled amidst serene waters and shielded by towering limestone formations. To preserve the tranquility, the best way to approach the village is by rowing boats or kayaks. This fishing village offers insight into the locals’ lives in humble floating houses, practicing aquaculture harmoniously with nature. Visitors can also participate in fishing trips and try their hand at catching fish and squids using traditional tools and techniques. A visit to this serene and surreal village is a must for a complete bay experience.
  • Luon Grotto : Carved into a massive rock wall facing Turtle Island, Luon Grotto resembles a gateway to a hidden realm. Once you row through the entrance, you’re greeted by a peaceful emerald lagoon. This location offers a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in nature – the lush vegetation adorning ancient limestone formations rising majestically from the emerald sea.
  • Sung Sot Cave : Translating to “Cave of Surprises,” Sung Sot Cave lives up to its name, leaving a remarkable impression on visitors as they step inside for the first time. Situated at the heart of the bay, it stands as one of the grandest caves in Ha Long Bay’s extensive collection. The cave is divided into two parts: the Opera House and the Botanical Garden, with names that become clear once you enter these chambers and witness the awe-inspiring wonders of nature.
  • Thien Cung Cave : Known as the “Cave of Heaven,” Thien Cung Cave is often hailed as the most spectacular among all the bay’s caves. This is owing to its expansive chamber and the multitude of unique stalagmites and sparkling stalactites. Due to its complex structure, a staircase system was introduced in 1998 to ensure convenient and safe exploration, making it the first cave in Ha Long to receive proper maintenance and development.
  • Ho Dong Tien Cave : Nestled within limestone formations and adorned with lush vegetation, Ho Dong Tien (Dong Tien Tarn) is a hidden mountain lake connected to the nearby Ho Dong Tien Cave. Legend has it that even fairies couldn’t resist the heavenly landscapes of this place, descending to bathe in its crystal-clear waters. This story lends the lake its name, which means “Fairy’s Cave.” The stalactite formations within this lake and cave system are young and constantly evolving. It’s also home to endangered species, and if luck is on your side, you might spot the Goniurosaurus catbaensis, a reptile native to the island. The indescribable beauty and biodiversity of this place must be witnessed firsthand to be truly appreciated.
  • Titop Island : This small island is renowned for its crescent-shaped beach with fine white sand, hence its original name – Cat Nang or “Sand Lady.” In the late 19th century, President Ho Chi Minh, along with Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov (the second human to orbit Earth and the fourth to venture into space), visited this breathtaking island. In honor of this historical occasion, Uncle Ho renamed the island after the distinguished cosmonaut. Over time, the name “Titov” transformed into “Titop,” as pronounced in Vietnamese. A short trail leads to the mountaintop, offering a panoramic 360-degree view of the bay.
  • Dau Go Cave : Accessible via 90 stone steps, the cave entrance resembles a giant blue jellyfish mirroring the sky – a captivating fusion of the ocean and the heavens. The cave’s roof reaches a height of 25 meters, providing a wide-angle lens into the extraordinary formations of rocks and stalactites within. It was once referred to as the “Grotte des Merveilles,” or “Cave of Wonders,” by the French travel guidebook Merveille de Monde. The cave’s grand scale offers a tour of the world’s wonders and satisfies your innate curiosity for exploration.
  • Soi Sim Island : Named after native plants on the island that bloom with vibrant purple flowers, Soi Sim Island is a destination that warrants ample time. It’s not only a natural marvel to admire but also a recreational haven featuring thrilling activities. These include ascending the staircase to the mountaintop to witness the enchanting sunset and venturing onto the open waters with a jet ski.
  • Me Cung Cave : Situated 25 meters above sea level, this modest cave holds more mysteries and legends than one would anticipate. The “Cave of Maze,” as it translates, dates back to the New Stone Age, spanning from 7,000 to 10,000 years ago. Today, it provides shelter and sustenance for a diverse array of flora and fauna.

The region has a monsoon climate, which means it has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. Before you arrive to Ha Long, you should check ➜ Current weather in Ha Long Bay .
  • The dry season in Halong Bay lasts from November to April, and this period is considered the best time to visit. During this season, the weather is sunny and dry, and the temperature ranges from 15°C to 25°C. The skies are generally clear, and the bay is calm, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as kayaking, swimming, and hiking.
  • The rainy season in Halong Bay lasts from May to October, and it is characterized by high humidity, heavy rainfall, and occasional storms. The temperature during this season ranges from 25°C to 35°C, and the humidity levels can be quite high. The rainfall peaks in July and August, and it’s not uncommon for typhoons to hit the region during this time.

As you drift away from Vietnam 's north coast on a wooden junk, you'll be captivated by a wall of emerald green that reveals itself as Ha Long Bay after an hour or so. This world-famous tourist attraction boasts otherworldly limestone peaks jutting from the water at sheer angles. While there are few specific sights on the ground, the bay offers plenty of activities beyond cruising, such as kayaking, swimming among phosphorescent plankton, and even rock climbing.

Cultural Saigon

Southern Vietnam is home to modern Ho Chi Minh City, a vibrant southern capital full of historic attraction and old Saigonese charm. Soak up some café culture, enjoy authentic street food, and get a taste of the city’s thriving markets.

Ha Long Bay is home to thousands of limestone karst towers, which are not unique but impressive in scale. According to local legend, the celestial dragon and her children spat out pearls to create islands and razor-sharp mountain chains to stop an invasion, giving rise to the name Ha Long, which means "dragon descending". Despite being a major shipping lane and one of Vietnam's more industrialized regions, tourism has significantly benefited the local communities, although litter and pollution from boats are a concern.

King Le Thanh Tong was inspired by Ha Long Bay's scenery during his visit in 1469 and wrote a poem comparing the islands to pieces on a chessboard. Visitors have struggled to capture the mystery of this fantasy world ever since. While some describe the islands as Tuscan cathedrals, others use more meditative descriptions such as "grey-haired fairies".

#5 Swim among phosphorescent plankton

Swimming among the twinkling of phosphorescent plankton is a magical experience in Ha Long Bay. As the sun sets, the water starts to glow with millions of tiny, luminescent organisms, creating a surreal atmosphere. Jumping into the warm water and feeling the gentle currents against your skin is a refreshing and unforgettable experience. The plankton's glow intensifies with movement, making swimming feel like a trip to an underwater galaxy.

#6 See the view from Titop Island

This island’s steep shape is unusual – like a jungle-covered Matterhorn in miniature. The best thing to do here, if you’ve got the legs for it, is march up the 400-plus steps to the 110m-high summit, for a fantastic bay view. Those in a more sedentary mood may prefer to laze on the beach; snorkelling equipment can be rented from the island bar.

#7 Swim at one of the pristine Ha Long Bay beaches

The crystal clear waters of Ha Long Bay are perfect for swimming. These empty, sandy and relatively clean beaches fringing its east coast are well worth a visit. The best time to swim is from April to November when the water is warm.

#8 Go rock climbing — one of the best things to do in Ha Long Bay

For adventurous travellers, rock climbing is a popular activity in Ha Long Bay. The towering limestone karsts and cliffs provide a thrilling challenge for climbers of all skill levels. Many tour operators offer rock climbing packages that include equipment rental and guides. Climbers can enjoy stunning views of the bay from the top and test their skills on various routes.

#9 Visit fishing villages:

The fishing villages of Ha Long Bay offer a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the locals who have lived off the sea for generations. Cua Van is the largest and most popular village, with floating houses, schools, shops, and even a clinic. You can take a boat ride through the village, visit a pearl farm, and observe the daily routines of the fishermen.

#10 Enjoy a seafood feast

Seafood is a must-try in Ha Long Bay due to its abundant supply of fresh and delicious seafood. Visitors can indulge in a wide variety of seafood dishes, including grilled oysters, steamed crabs, and fried squid. There are also floating seafood markets where visitors can buy fresh seafood and have it cooked on the spot

The easiest way to get to Ha Long Bay is from Hanoi. You have dozens of options to get there via public transportation or tour agencies.

Take a guided tour

Every Hanoi tour agent offers Ha Long Bay excursions, which work out easier – and usually cheaper – than doing the same thing yourself. There are a wide variety of trips available, including day tours, though since the bay is a 6hr round trip from Hanoi these can feel very rushed. Most opt for a two-day, one-night tour, with the night spent at sea – this can be a delightful experience.

Charter boat

If you’re travelling in a group or want greater independence, you can always charter your own boat. Meals on board cost extra, but can be excellent. Drinks tend to be pricey – it’s best to take your own.

Public Transport

There’s also the option of getting to Cat Ba by public transport – you’ll miss out on a night at sea and a few caves, but from your hydrofoil seat you’ll see the bay on the way (albeit in fast-forward.

When choosing a tour, it's important to do your research and select a reputable tour operator. There are many tour companies offering various packages, so it's essential to choose one that suits your budget and preferences. Here's our pick of the best tours of Ha Long Bay:

  • Buffalo Tours: Impeccable tours on one of the best junks around – the Jewel of the Bay. The seafood is as delectable as you’ll get on the bay, the wine list none too shabby and kayaking is included in the cost of the trip.
  • Emeraude: A replica of a nineteenth-century paddle-steamer, the five-star Emeraude is one of the most luxurious vessels on the bay. Facilities include a restaurant, two bars, a beauty salon and massage rooms and spacious sundecks where you can indulge in sunrise tai chi classes.
  • Avoid the hassle of planning and booking altogether with our tailor-made trip service . Our trips are created by local travel experts and are completely customisable. Our Vietnam Family Adventure trip takes you through Ha Long Bay and other iconic areas of Vietnam.
  • Handspan: Reliable operator with excellent vessels and a range of tours; perhaps of most interest is the trip around the less-visited Bai Tu Long Bay, which eschews the usual caves for excursions to fish farms and local schools.
  • Life Resorts : Fancy your own luxury vessel? On these tours, it’s just you and the crew. This makes it a popular choice for honeymooners.
  • Paradise Cruises : Sumptuously decorated cabins hint at high luxury – this is the only operator that expects guests to dress for dinner. Tai Chi sessions come as part of the package.

You will want to pack appropriate clothing and gear. Comfortable clothes and shoes are a must. You also won't want to forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. If you plan on kayaking or swimming, bring a waterproof bag to keep your valuables safe.

While here, be mindful of the environment. Ha Long Bay is a fragile ecosystem, and it's important to take care of it. Avoid littering and dispose of your waste properly. Choose eco-friendly tours and support local initiatives that promote sustainability.

Finally, immerse yourself in the local culture. Try the delicious seafood, interact with the friendly locals, and learn about the fascinating history and traditions of the region. Ha Long Bay is more than just a stunning natural wonder; it's also a place of rich cultural heritage and vibrant local life.

The splendour and romance of Ha Long Bay are hard to appreciate in poor conditions. Days of overcast weather can occur throughout the year but are most likely from November to March. This is when winter drizzle can be compounded by an intense chill.

The best time to visit Ha Long Bay is between September and November or from March to May, when the weather is mild and dry. Avoid visiting during the summer months when it's hot and humid, and there's a high chance of rain and typhoons.

Madman's Journey

Ha Long Bay Itinerary 2024: Gems Amidst Emerald Seas

Halong Bay Blog: One early morning, we raced after a local bus from Bac Ninh to Vietnam’s Capital, Hanoi . We had booked our Halong Bay trip and the infamous Hanoi Opera House was our pickup point.

I still vividly remember dozens of day tour vans calling out their booked travelers for the day at the Opera House to different day trips from Hanoi. Trang An and Halong Bay (or Vinh Ha Long) were the popular ones.

We hopped on our minivan and awaited the adventure. FYI I hadn’t a clue of what Halong Bay was. I only knew it was ‘nice’. So here goes my Ha Long Bay itinerary.

Table of Contents

Ha Long Bay Itinerary

For the Ha Long Bay Itinerary, the most commonly picked itineraries are for 1-day and 2-day-1-night trips. But others prefer staying longer to explore the fishing villages.

The deal is that Halong Bay has 1600 islands, most of which are limestones. As you cruise through the never-ending green blobs, there’s little to do here apart from the few treks, beaches, and cave exploration.

Unless of course, you wish to sit down and examine the entire ecosystem by yourself. Nevertheless, I visited Ha Long Bay for a 1-day trip and regretted not planning a longer itinerary.

halong bay hanoi trip

Also, keep in mind that Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay aren’t very different. Lan Ha Bay is relatively a smaller area with more flora on peaks and fewer crowds. But Ha Long Bay is the most popular here.

If you’re particular about Lan Ha Bay, pick some tours specific to Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island.

Ha Long Bay Itinerary 1 Day Guide

I visited Halong Bay with a 1 day tour and I loved it! Consider this my Halong Bay blog for 1 day. There were a few more places that we couldn’t quite cover, but the one day isn’t a bad idea for budget travelers.

For Ha Long Bay 1 day trip, I recommend picking Route 2 to explore the better parts. However, I’ve included attractions of both routes in this 1-day itinerary so that it helps you decide better.

For booking the tour , book in advance (at least a day prior). I recommend using Klook.com for the best rates and flexibility of choices. Also, our readers get better deals from Klook.com!

I handpicked this Ha Long Bay tour below- it begins at a decent rate and you get to choose different cruises, routes, and even the length of your itinerary. The second itinerary is for those who wish for a private tour. Grab your deals today!

Arrive at pickup point at 7:30 – 8:00 am .

Pick your nearest pickup location. Luxury tours pick you up straight from the hotel but make sure to be on time. We, on the other hand, ran our asses off from Bac Ninh to catch a local bus to make it on time to the Hanoi Opera House. Gladly, we were just in time.

Some common pickup points are Hanoi Opera House, Old Quarters, and Hoan Kiem Lake.

cruise from hanoi halong bay

Board the Cruise at Tuan Chau Marina Port

From Hanoi, after the two-hour shuttle bus ride to Tuan Chau Marina Port, the agency will typically take care of the cruise arrangement. The cruise itself is a short journey – have a seafood lunch on the boat before reaching Halong Bay (food is included in the package).

Explore the Thien Cung and Sung Sot Caves

Available on Route 1 & 2. Both caves are to be the first stop at Ha Long Bay. Some operators take you to both caves – we did too. While the caves are photogenic, they’re honestly similar to each other. So don’t mind covering only one.

Catch sight of Hon Dinh Huong and Fighting Cock Islet

Route 1 only : These are small islets you can’t land on. The cruise takes you around it for pictures. The Hon Dinh Huong is famous as its image is printed on the Vietnamese VND 200,000 note.

Fighting cock is a similar islet where two tiny islets appear very much like two chickens fighting.

Hike the Ti Top (Titov) Island

halong bay kayaking

Route 2 only : With the steps, we began climbing thinking it was easy. Well, it was easy except the hike to the top is 450 steep steps! After all that cave walk and accompanied heat, this gets tiring.

But the peak of Ti Top Island is worth all the effort!

Kayak at Hang Luon Caves

Kayaking is on Route 1 & 2 . But I’m only certain you get to kayak at Luon Caves on Route 2. Kayak under the arched Luon Cave to an open sky area amidst the peaks! Other spots to kayak are Bai Tu Long Bay, Cong Do, and Cong Dam.

This is the last activity at Halong Bay for a 1-day trip. Get ready to sunbathe your way back on the cruise to the port and back to Hanoi.

Ha Long Bay itinerary for 2 Days

halong bay 1 day tour

The Ha Long Bay itinerary for 2 days is the most popular tour. While the 1-day trip covers most, it’s very hurried. The 2 Days 1-night itinerary lets you seep in the experiences.

Added to it, you have the privilege of visiting attractions on a less touristy schedule. Some cruises let you Kayak in solitude at sunrise! But my favorite on this itinerary is squid-fishing!

As day one’s schedule is similar to the 1-day Ha Long Bay itinerary, I’ve skipped its descriptions below.

Here’s a quick list of Ha Long Bay Itinerary for 2 Days from Hanoi:

  • Day 1: Arrive at pickup point 7:30 – 8:00 am
  • Board at Tuan Chau Port and Have a Seafood Lunch
  • Walk the Sung Sot Caves
  • Sight the Hon Dinh Huong Islets
  • Hike Ti Top Island
  • Go squid fishing : This is only possible with the 2-day itinerary as it’s an evening activity. You get to hold light out the waters from your cruise and wait till squids take the bait! Ha Long Bay is known for fishing among local fishermen!
  • Karaoke or take a cooking class! These are additional privileges of a 2-day tour. Some host cooking classes, and you can vibe to music on the evening sun deck or karaoke. Some rare ones even have martial arts training!
  • Day 2 : Go for kayaking at sunrise (at Luon Caves)
  • Tour the Lang Chai Tra Bau : (new route only) The Tra Bau area is a fishing village. This is a guided tour around the spot of peaks where the Kong Skull movie was shot.
  • Have another brunch . This gets to the end of this itinerary. After your long kayak and Tra Bau tour, head back to Tuan Chau Airport as you have brunch.

For a 2-day 1-night itinerary, the Golden Cruise and Oriental Cruise are the most popular options for reasonable rates and comfortable stays. Book your 2D1N tour below for the best price!

Ha Long bay blog

Ha Long Bay Itinerary for 3 Days

3 Days is best for those looking for luxury cruises. In my opinion, there isn’t more to explore. Of course, there are more limestone islets you’ll traverse by, but nothing new of sorts.

As not many people choose these tours and they’re pricey – the tour itineraries vary a lot from one another. Some are simply luxurious hotels with incredible views. To get the most out of the 3-day itinerary, scroll to my recommended Klook tour below.

But for those simply looking for a plush relaxation by Ha Long Bay, I highly recommend the Orchid Cruise . They offer relaxed slow sailing with luxurious facilities and rooms with private balconies.

Some additional places to visit on the Ha Long Bay 3 Days itinerary are Ba Hang floating villages, and Frog and Chopstick Islands (according to one of the popular 3-day itineraries).

Anyway, here’s an example of a Halong Bay itinerary for 3 days:

  • Day 1 : Get to the Tuan Chau International Marina and begin with lunch (as usual)
  • Cruise by Swan, Dog Head, and floating villages (Ba Hang floating village)
  • Check out the thumb island – yes, it DOES look like a thumb.
  • Walk the Luon Caves and Ti Top Island
  • Go Squidfishing!
  • Day 2 : Again begin with swimming and kayaking (Frog Island and Chopstick Island)
  • Visit the Halong Bay Pearl Museum
  • Laze around the beach
  • Day 3 : Visit the Sung Sot Cave
  • Last cruise around the Fighting cock islets and Incense Burner Island
  • Have lunch and back to Hanoi.

To get the most out of Halong Bay’s 3-day itinerary, I recommend taking the Phoenix cruise from Klook.com. It’s the most popular option with budget pricing and incredible amenities. Check it out below!

halong bay itinerary

Funnily, all the itineraries begin with the long ride from Hanoi and kickstart with a seafood lunch. That’s more or less the standard for any itinerary.

To summarize, the caves and Ti Top Island are the most popular. Kayaking, swimming, and beaches are the next most popular things to do. Floating villages and the additional cruise for viewing different islets are for additional days.

Ha Long Bay Blog FAQs

Before we begin with my experience, here are some common FAQs about Halong Bay.

Is Halong Bay Worth Visiting?

Halong Bay is worth visiting! When in Hanoi, I recommend taking at least one day to visit Halong (or Ha Long in Vietnamese) Bay.

It’s even better when you haven’t an idea of the place and simply hit the road! For this article’s sake, it isn’t only nature – Ha Long Bay is a unique experience that’s impossible to find elsewhere. Among the list of Phu Quoc Island and Cat Ba Island, this is one of Vietnam’s must-see.

The limestone peaks amidst hypnotic green seas and the fact that you’ll cruise through these is no less of a paradise.

best itineraries halong bay

How Many Days to Spend in Halong Bay?

How long in Ha Long Bay? Hmm, this isn’t easy to answer. With Halong Bay so popular in the world today, travelers pick every itinerary option available on the cruises.

Some take a 4-day 3-night cruise and many even take the 1-day trip option. But the most popular option in terms of budget (and time) is taking the 2-day 1-night cruise in Ha Long Bay.

A Halong Bay 1 day trip is sufficient to check out what the hype is all about. 1 Day trip is even enough to get around the main attractions of Halong Bay. But you’ll also realize you should have stayed longer.

I recommend the 2 days for Ha Long Bay as you’ll get to see the more offbeat parts of Halong Bay. Anything longer can also get boring to some.

How to Get to Halong Bay?

The best way to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi is via package tours that take care of transport. It’s cheap as they cover the shuttle bus ride and the cruise trip costs till Halong Bay.

Halong Bay is 172 km from Hanoi and takes 2.5 to 3 hours to get there through the New Highway 5B, Hai Phong City. These shuttle buses pick up travelers from spots like Hanoi Old Quarters and the Opera House.

Thien Cung caves

As taxis get expensive, the shuttle bus is a budget-friendly option. They cost 350,000 VND – 560,000 VND (USD 15 – USD 23) depending on the comfort of the shuttle bus. The fare gets higher for private charters.

Rented bikes are an alternative if you don’t mind the heat. Another wild option (for the rich) is taking a 45-minute seaplane from Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport to Tuan Chau Island Marina. Yes .

Is Halong Bay one of the seven wonders of the World?

This came across when I was researching for this post – I thought it to be funny to add. There’s a lot of criticism in this list but Halong Bay, in the end, did make it. Read more on Wikipedia .

Though not on the same 7 Wonders of the World as the Taj Mahal, Halong Bay was voted in the new 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011. 200-plus countries were participating in this!

The evolution of Karst in this bay is said to have evolved over 20 million years. The limestone in these little islands is said to have taken 500 million years.

A whole biodiversity is in place today and thus, apart from all the tourism trends, there is so much more to Ha Long Bay than just having a drink with a view from your cruise. I’d say it has every reason to be on the 7 Nature Wonders of the World.

What is special about Ha Long Bay?

Ha Long Bay is a place of exceptional natural beauty that has been recognized by UNESCO and is World Heritage listed. The karst scenery is simply stunning and the area has geological significance. Off the northeast coast of Vietnam, dense clusters of islands rise from calm emerald-green waters and the natural beauty of the area is simply breathtaking.

TIP: Experience the limestone karst rock formations of Ha Long Bay in luxury aboard a 4-star junk boat cruiser on a 2-day / 1-night cruise . Immerse yourself in the everyday lives of the locals and get spectacular views from Ti Top Island.

How Big is Halong Bay?

Halong Bay covers approximately 1,553 square kilometres (600 miles) and includes around 2000 limestone islands on around 120 kilometres of Vietnam’s coastline. The ancient karst mountains and islets formed over 20 million years ago and are covered in lush tropical forests. Amongst the islands are limestone caves, lakes, floating villages and white sandy beaches.

The Legend of Ha Long Bay

Ha Long means “descending dragon” and, according to an ancient local legend, a family of dragons were sent by the Gods to defend and protect Vietnam against invaders. The dragons spat out jade and jewels which became the islets and islands of the bay. These islands formed a barrier against invaders from the sea.

Mountains rose like magic from the water, and ships crashed onto the rocky shores and sank. The place where the mother dragon descended is known as Ha Long Bay.

Where is Ha Long Bay located in Vietnam?

Ha Long Bay lies off the coast of north-eastern Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin in Quang Ninh province, around 165 kilometres from Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

People have lived in Ha Long Bay since 5000 BC, and the area has an ancient history. There are four fishing villages in the bay but most of the islands are uninhabited. The two biggest islands are Cat Ba and Tuan Chau and there are a number of stunning beaches on the smaller islands.

Is Ha Long Bay near Ho Chi Minh City?

No. Ho Chi Minh City is in the south of Vietnam and is more than 1,800 kilometres away from Ha Long Bay. The best way to visit Halong Bay from Ho Chi Minh City is to fly to Hanoi in the north of the country and join a cruise boat. Another option is to travel to Halong City and catch a ferry to Cat Ba Island and take a day trip to Ha Long Bay.

Cruise to Ha Long Bay

The best time of year to visit Ha Long Bay

The best time of year to visit Ha Long Bay is in spring (March – April) or in Autumn (September – October) when the weather is warm and mostly dry.

In Summer (May to October) the weather is sunny, hot and humid and it’s an ideal time for swimming. But typhoons can disrupt travel plans and summer has the highest annual rainfall.

In winter (November to March) the weather tends to be cool and dry, especially in January and February and there can be fog.

TIP: Learn more about what January in Vietnam is like and the best and worst months to visit Vietnam.

Ha Long Bay in January

I went to Ha Long Bay in January and had cool, pleasant weather for my cruise. From December to February, temperatures are mild with an average high of 20 degrees and there’s less rain.

The weather in Ha Long Bay is influenced by the monsoon season. The wet season is from May to September, and the dry season is from November to March.

Vietnam is a long, narrow country and there are different climates in the tropical south, central and north of the country. While the weather is cool in the north of Vietnam the south of the county remains hot and humid in January.

Is a day trip from Hanoi possible?

TIP: If you’re short of time this day trip to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi will give you a taste of the area. You’ll see the Ha Long Wharf, Sung Sot Cave, and the tranquil Ti Top Island. Kayak at Luon Cave, and swim in the blue waters of the crescent-shaped Titov beach.

Yes, it’s possible to visit on a day trip from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay but you’ll spend around 7-8 hours travelling to and from Hanoi and will have only an afternoon to see Ha Long Bay.

Stunning Halong Bay in Vietnam

Is it worth staying overnight at Halong Bay?

Yes, it’s definitely worth staying overnight and 2-days is long enough to explore the bay and appreciate the beautiful surroundings. On an overnight cruise, you’ll see the sun rise and set over the bay. There’s enough time to climb to some stunning viewpoints, visit a cave and take part in various activities on board the cruise boat like early morning Tai Chi, kayaking, or a cooking class.

in 2 days you’ll spend the first morning travelling from Hanoi to the dock or the ferry to Cat Ba Island. Once on board the cruise boat you’ll motor to Ha Long Bay and have a few hours before sunset and the morning of the following day to explore. Around 11 am the cruise boats head back to the dock for the transfer to the bus and the return trip to Hanoi.

It’s still not a lot of time, so consider putting aside a few days for a longer cruise to Ha Long Bay to spend more time in the area.

How many days to spend at Halong Bay?

While an overnight cruise is enough time to get a taste of Ha Long Bay, it’s worth staying a bit longer if you can. The area is stunning, and you could easily spend a few days exploring the islands, caves and villages of the area.

With an extra day or 2, you can head off the beaten track to visit Bai Tu Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay where the scenery is just as beautiful as the main attraction. You’ll have more time to visit islands and fishing villages and caves in the area without the tourist crowds at the more popular cruise boat stops.

Consider spending a night or two on gorgeous Cat Ba Island and enjoy the white sandy beaches, limestone caves and stunning scenery.

kayaking on ha Long bay in Vietnam

Best Things to Do in Ha Long Bay

One of the most popular water sports is kayaking and it’s an activity offered by most of the cruise boats. Taking to the water in a kayak is an opportunity to explore the bay and discover the islets, coves and beaches from the water.

Visit floating fishing villages

There are 4 floating villages in the area. Cua Can fishing village is one of the most beautiful and it’s also the oldest. Cua Can village adjoins both Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay. The floating fishing villages create a lovely atmosphere and are an opportunity for visitors to witness an ancient and peaceful way of life on the sea in Vietnam.

Swimming & sunbathing on the beach

There are lots of beautiful islands to explore and many beaches where relaxing on the sand and swimming in the calm waters is popular. Pretty Ti Top Beach on Ti Top Island is a favourite stop for cruise boats and Bai Chay Beach is also popular with blue seas and golden sand.

Ha Long bay in Vietnam

Stunning Views

Ti Top Island has stunning views from the top of the mountain. A steep climb from the beach to the viewpoint rewards walkers with sweeping views across the bay. It’s a popular stop on a cruise to Ha Long Bay. Poem Mountain is a leafy limestone peak that offers photogenic views of the bay and there are lots of other scenic viewpoints in the area.

Cat Ba Island

Staying on Cat Ba Island is a good alternative to a cruise and you can enjoy the stunning scenery of the bay on a day trip or explore the island by car, scooter, bicycle or on foot. You can get there on the ferry from the Tuan Chau ferry terminal.

Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay

Bai Tu Long Bay is a lesser-known area of the national park northeast of Ha Long Bay that is just as beautiful and much less busy. And Lan Ha Bay , an extension of Ha Long Bay southeast of Cat Ba Island is also very beautiful with hundreds of gorgeous karst islands and is much less crowded.

Caves in Ha Long Bay

Inside the Karst mountains, there are several enormous limestone caves containing stalactites and stalagmites and an abundance of internal lakes. Hang Dau Go is the largest of the caves in Ha Long Bay and Sung Sot Cave is a popular cruise stop on the bay.

Scenic flight

Take a scenic flight and enjoy the stunning scenery of Ha Long Bay from the air.

Rock climbing

Ha Long Bay in Vietnam is a very popular spot for rock climbing and there are many climbing routes on Cat Ba Island and on the limestone cliffs of the bay.

How to get there

TIP: The easiest way to reach Ha Long Bay is to book a cruise package from Hanoi . Cruise packages usually include a transfer by bus from your hotel to the cruise boat.

Ha Long Bay can easily be reached by bus or private hire car from Hanoi and driving to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi takes around 4 hours.

There are international airports at both Hanoi and Hai Phong and Hai Phong is around 63 kilometres from Ha Long Bay and is a 1.5-hour drive.

A seaplane flies from Hanoi to Tuan Chau Island near Ha Long City.

The flight may include a circuit over Ha Long Bay so you can take in the stunning scenery from the air.

Where to Stay

Onboard accommodation is included in cruise packages that are 2 or more days long and a cruise is the easiest way to see Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.

Accommodation is also available on Cat Ba Island and you can sleep comfortably on land while spending a few days exploring the area.

Alternatively, you can stay in Ha Long City, Hai Phong or Hanoi and take a day trip to Ha Long Bay.

Ha Long bay in Vietnam

How expensive is Halong Bay?

While a cruise can be one of the more expensive items on a trip to Vietnam, it’s still comparatively cheap. All meals, drinks, activities and transfers to and from Hanoi are included in most cruise packages. A 4-star overnight 2-day cruise costs about the same as a half day of snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Can you swim in Ha Long Bay?

Yes, you can swim in Ha Long Bay and there are many pretty beaches where swimming is popular. The water is calm and it’s safe for children and those who are less confident in the water.

The area is stunning but there are often a lot of people visiting and it can get crowded. The cruise boats all tend to anchor in the same place. For conservation reasons, there are limited places where cruise boats can anchor overnight.

Is Halong Bay polluted?

Because of the number of cruise boats and tourists visiting the area unfortunately the waters of Ha Long Bay are not entirely clean. Although there were a couple of opportunities for swimming on my cruise, I chose not to, partly because the January weather was cool but also because I could see bilge from the cruise boats in the water. There are also signs of pollution by oil, metals, pesticides and organic matter.

Vietnam Travel Tips

  • To enter Vietnam you must have a valid passport and visa. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your arrival and you have an empty page for your entry & exit stamps.
  • Don’t drink the water! Always drink bottled, boiled, or purified water in Vietnam. Boiled tap water is usually safe to drink.
  • Don’t flush your toilet paper. Use the bin provided. The sewerage systems can’t handle it.
  • When visiting a temple dress conservatively and be respectful. Cover your knees and shoulders or you may not be allowed to enter. Never sit with your feet pointing towards the Buddha. This is considered very offensive behaviour.
  • Vietnam is generally a safe place to visit but watch out for petty theft and scams, especially if you’re travelling solo in Vietnam.
  • Take a green taxi and make sure the meter is running or you might be overcharged. If there is no meter agree on a price before you get in the taxi.
  • Take US dollars to Vietnam as it’s the easiest currency to exchange. I had no trouble changing Australian dollars except when I was travelling off the beaten track in spectacular Phong Nha-Ke Bang visiting incredible caves and enjoying more stunning karst scenery.

Beautiful Ha Long Bay in Vietnam

Final thoughts

A cruise to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam was a highlight of my 3 week Vietnam itinerary and, although there were lots of other boats and tourists, I enjoyed my stay and would like to go back and spend a bit more time exploring the area. I’d like to see Bai Tu Long or Lan Ha Bay and maybe spend a night or 2 on Cat Ba Island. The area is stunning and solo travellers can explore this gorgeous part of the world in a safe and comfortable way.

If you have the time and money, you could easily extend your stay and get off the beaten track in this stunning world heritage area.

Many visitors choose shuttles, private cars, or luxurious limousine services to access Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay.

Prices vary from US$15 to US$200 , offering different levels of comfort and privacy to suit individual preferences and group needs.

Air Transport

Opting for air transfer is another choice to reach Halong Bay, offering seaplane services or private helicopter bookings.

This exclusive option allows travelers, especially VVIPs, to enjoy breathtaking aerial views of the bay, providing a rare and unforgettable experience.

Water Transport

Arriving in Halong Bay by water is an uncommon option, typically accessible through trans-Pacific cruises that include major stops like Halong Bay, Da Nang-Hoi An, Nha Trang, Saigon, and other Southeast Asian regions. This mode of arrival is infrequent, and mainly utilized by special cruise itineraries.

Do I Need a Visa to Go to Vietnam?

Before finalizing your Halong Bay plans, such as selecting a cruise and planning your itinerary, it’s crucial to secure the essential travel documents.

Non-national travelers typically need a visa to enter Vietnam. However, visitors from countries with visa waiver status are granted a stay duration of up to 45 days from the entry date, inclusive of the arrival day and the following 44 days of stay.

Check if your country is on Vietnam’s visa waiver list and learn how to obtain a visa HERE .

You can also check if your citizenship is applicable on  e-visa .

Currency and Payment Methods in Vietnam?

For first-time tourists visiting Vietnam in 2023, it’s important to note that the official currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND).

While some establishments may accept major credit cards, especially in urban areas and hotels, it’s advisable to carry local currency, particularly in smaller denominations, for more convenient transactions, especially at local markets, and street vendors where cards might not be accepted.

Exchanging money can be easily done at authorized exchange offices, banks, and hotels, and ATMs are prevalent for withdrawing cash. Be mindful of carrying larger notes, as they might appear to be high in value due to the currency’s relatively large numbers.

It’s also recommended to check with your bank regarding any foreign transaction fees or currency conversion charges before using your credit or debit card in Vietnam.

In the context of Halong Bay visits, many cruises offer online payment options or accept credit cards onboard. US dollars are occasionally accepted as well, typically at a rate of 1 USD ≈ 24,000 VND.

When cruising through Halong Bay, additional expenses are usually minimal, aside from discretionary spending on souvenirs or tipping, which is rarely practiced in the Northern region.

To ensure a hassle-free trip, it’s recommended to have some cash on hand, bring your credit card, and confirm specifics with your chosen cruise operator.

We hope this guide showed you how to plan your perfect Halong Bay trip. If you still have any question, don’t hesitate to comment below.

Traveling to Ha Long Bay, an Earthly Paradise (Under Touristic Assault)

Traveling to Ha Long Bay

In these articles I will bring you to discover Ha Long Bay, one of the 7 wonders of the natural world!

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Known for its emerald waters reflecting millions of limestone rocks and islets that shoot up from the water, the bay recreates an almost surreal and mythical scene.

Many of these rocky formations are islands where nature provides a true spectacle: jungle, caves and vast marine and animal biodiversity.

How to get to Ha Long Bay?

The bay is located in the northeast of Vietnam , in the Gulf of Tonkin, off of the provincial capital of Ha Long , a few kilometers from the Chinese border.

To visit the bay you can stay in Ha Long City or get there from Hanoi .

Hanoi is located 165 kilometers from the bay and in 4 hours you should get to your destination. There are various ways for getting from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay; for sure the most comfortable way is by bus, which you can also book directly at your hotel, or the minibus, a comfortable option that comes right to your accommodations.

You could also opt for a private car and driver. This last option is certainly not as cheap compared to the previous choices.

Since 2014 there’s also a flight from Hanoi with an airline called Hai Au Aviation. In this case the trip takes about 45 minutes.

From Hai Phong

You can also get to Ha Long Bay from Hai Phong, which is 75 kilometers away, so compared to Hanoi it’s much closer. But this depends on where you’re located. It takes more or less 2 and a half hours to get to the bay from Hai Phong.

Where to stay in Halong Bay?

First of all, I recommend that you stay at least three days so that you can also see places that are less assaulted by tourists. Moreover, you can also stay on a boat. Depending on the company you choose for your cruise, you could also spend a night in a bungalow with a sea view on the island of Nam Ca, another of the bay’s pearls. In that way, you can take a nice walk or ecological bike ride to discover the island when you wake up.

If instead you’d rather have a “normal” hotel, click here to take a look at the best hotels located near Ha Long Bay .

What to do in Halong Bay?

The bay offers lots of activities, both in terms of natural excursions or active tourism. You can opt to spend hours on a kayak or just relax on the bridge of a Junk Boat, a local vessel, and enjoy this unique panorama.

You can select boat tours of one, two or three days. Spend the night aboard a boat, stop at islands like Cat Bat or take in views of the bay from a seaplane: it’s a unique and different experience to enjoy the spectacular bay alone and from above.

Another activity offered on excursions are visits to floating villages, pearl growers or the caves of Dau Go. Or you could also rent bikes or go trekking on the islands.

The Fall is the best period for enjoying a cruise on Ha Long Bay.

Here’s a recommended 3 day itinerary for seeing the bay:

  • 1st day : depart for Ha Long Bay and spend the day on a Vietnamese boat surrounded by the magnificent colors of turquoise water and green mountains, where the more than two hundred granite islands poke out of the calm waters. Cruise the bay and visit the Me Cung caves with a local guide;
  • 2nd day : spend the day in one of the countless beaches in Ha Long Bay, a short cooking class and lunch with the delicacies prepared; afternoon dedicated to snorkeling;
  • 3rd day : kayak the bay and a 20 minute ride in a seaplane; sunset on the boat and a Vietnamese dinner.

Prices and cruise excursions

Depending on the excursion you choose you’ll be able to see and explore more areas, even those more remote and less trampled by tourists.

A cruise for one day and two nights will cost at a minimum between 40 and 80 USD . A cruise for two nights and three days could cost more than 100 USD, but will allow you to also explore places further from the port.

Usually prices include food and lodging as well as a transfer to and from Hanoi or other places.

Note that we’ve cited only the cheapest cruises. Obviously there are much more expensive ones!

What’s there to see in Halong Bay?

Cat Ba Island is the largest in the bay. The island is a bit overrun by mass tourism like the rest of the bay, and in some places there are buildings that are not completely in harmony with the rest of the landscape.

However a tour of its jungles and its streets is obligatory, From here you can take in magnificent sunsets on the bay and the boats of fishermen that live on Cat Ba, and even see the lovely women looking for oysters or other fish for their supplies wading in knee-deep water.

Curiosities and legends of the bay

The term Ha Long indicates “where the dragon goes into the sea” and the reference is quickly revealed. It is said that a dragon, while coming down from nearby mountains, created the bay with its large tail, with which it dug out holes and hollows. Between the water and these hollows all that remains visible are the peaks that correspond to the islands.

How to Get from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay?

How to Get from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay?

Distance & Types of Transportation

Rachel Tran

While Halong Bay and Ho Chi Minh City are the biggest magnets for tourists in Vietnam, the distance between these two attractions is quite something. Many may wonder which means of transportation is the best to travel such a distance. Read on to find out all the available options to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay, as well as which best suits you.

I. How Far is It from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay?

Map of distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay

Halong Bay is in Quang Ninh, a province located in the north of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City is in the far south. The distance between these two attractions is 1,700 kilometers , roughly equivalent to the distance between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

For such a distance, the best and fastest way to reach Halong Bay is by taking a 2-hour direct flight to Van Don Airport.

II. How to Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay

How to travel from Ho Chi Minh city to Halong Bay

1. Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay by Air

For those seeking a seamless, stress-free journey, traveling by air is your best choice . However, there are quite a few ways to travel by airplane from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay. Take a look at the following table:

Note: Generally speaking, Vietnam Airlines is the priciest airline, providing inclusive meals, water and more free baggage allowance. Bamboo Airways is medium-priced, while Vietjet Air is the cheapest. To find the most suitable means of transportation from Hanoi to Halong Bay, check out our article Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay.

2. Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay by Train

It’s impossible to travel directly from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay by train. You can catch a train in Saigon train station, arrive in Hanoi and use another means of transport to travel to Halong Bay.

Route: Sai Gon train station (Ho Chi Minh City) – Hanoi train station (Hanoi)

Duration: 33-37 hours

Price: 40 – 60 USD (depending on which seat you choose)

Note: a journey by train will take roughly 1 day and a half, making it the most time-consuming means of transportation available. It’s best to buy a sleeper ticket so that you can stretch your arms and legs a bit during the long journey. After arriving in Hanoi, check out the available means of transport in this article Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay to find a way to reach Halong Bay.

3. Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay by Bus

Again, there is no direct bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong bay . That means you’ll have to book a ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, and then find a way to reach Halong Bay.

It’s a really long way from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, so it’s best to catch a sleeper bus. There is a tiny bathroom on the bus, and there are plenty of stops along the way.

Duration: 35 hours

Price: 40 USD (tickets can be booked online)

Note: Generally speaking, it’s not a very comfortable way to travel to Halong Bay. The beds do not fully recline and the view is not nearly as good as traveling by train. If you have more time to spend, jump on a hop-on-hop-off bus, which allows you to get off at a major stop, stay for a few days, then head to the next city on the route. The price will be around 50 USD. On arriving in Hanoi, check out the available means of transport in this article Travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay to find a way to reach Halong Bay.

4. Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay by Motorbike

Motorcycling is not recommended in the case, as you should have a legal driving license to drive in Vietnam without risks of legal issues. It will be a very long journey; make sure you are in good health conditions, have a partner and a working smartphone.

It’s pretty hard to estimate the time it takes to ride a motorbike to Halong Bay, as it depends on the time you take to rest between stops. Regarding cost, you’ll need to spend about 10 USD per day to rent a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City and return it in Hanoi. Gasoline is not quite a matter, a liter of gasoline only costs 1 USD.

Summary of transport options to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay:

Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Halong Bay FAQ:

Car rentals are not readily available for the route. However, you can choose to rent a car to drive from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, but it will be a whopping fee of nearly 800 USD.

For those who have some to spare, you are strongly advised to choose the airplane. A direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Van Don Airport will be both time-efficient and relaxing for you and your family.

Though the train and bus might look cheap at first, bear in mind that it is not inclusive of the cost to travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay. It’s said that the total amount you pay will be more than enough to enjoy a direct flight. All things considered, airplanes are the most efficient way to travel.

Far too few travellers make it to Ninh Binh, a mesmerizing area known locally as ‘Ha Long Bay on Land’ thanks to its magical riverine landscape, with sheer limestone mountains rising up from the paddies. The best way to get a sense of this UNESCO-protected site is by taking a paddleboat tour along its shimmering rivers, and climbing to the top of its fabled peaks.

See the view from Hang Mua

Get a bird's-eye view of Ninh Binh at Hang Mua, where 500 steps have been dramatically carved into the steep face of a mountain. At the top, a lookout point offers a surreal vista of the river winding lazily among paddies and limestone outcrops.

Take a sampan tour

At the Tam Coc and Trang An boat docks, each sampan is guided by a boat person who rows with their feet, not their hands. You'll be expertly guided along gentle waterways, past towering karsts, and into dripping grottoes.

Visit the ancient capital

Today the capital of Vietnam is Hanoi, but in the 10th and 11th centuries that honour was held by Hoa Lu. This small ancient city was naturally protected from invasions by karsts and rivers. Today, it’s a good place to get a history fix.

Go in search of wildlife

An exotic row boat experience is a must-do at the Van Long Nature Reserve. Keep your eyes open for exotic friends, such as the black-faced spoonbill and the Delacour's Langur, one of the world’s most endangered primates.

Pay a visit to the Bai Dinh Temple

The largest complex of Buddhist temples in the country, Bai Dinh is a mix of old and new styles. Ancient temples are housed in caves you can only reach via a pretty climb of 300 steps, while the new temple area covers an area of 500 hectares.

Ninh Binh Weather

The temperatures in Ninh Binh are ideal from March to May and September to November. For the finest views, go during harvest season in October. If you visit in the hotter months from July to August, be prepared for random downpours and stormy moments.

Ninh Binh Transport

Regular buses depart to Ninh Binh from Hanoi every day. You can book a luxury van which includes transfer to Tam Coc, where plenty of charming accommodation options await. Private cars make the journey even quicker. For those with more time, several trains leave for Ninh Binh from Hanoi daily. The best way to get around Ninh Binh is by motorcycle tour or taxi. Cycling is a great option for visitors staying in Tam Coc.

Southeast Asia is a blend of fascinating traditions and cultures, with some of the most incredible temples, palaces and natural sites on the planet.

This region is home to famed attractions, from Angkor Wat to Ha Long Bay, as well as a selection of sprawling cities – including Bangkok , Kuala Lumpur and Singapore – and miles of pristine coastlines around Indonesia and the Philippines.

And though places such as Bangkok and Singapore have seen high numbers of British tourists for decades, other destinations are starting to attract more people, from lesser-known Laos to the neighbouring backpacker favourite of Cambodia .

Whether you’re looking to throw yourself into exploring a city or hop around a handful of serene tropical islands, your options are pentiful in this corner of the world.

Below are Independent Travel’s  picks for the region’s best countries to visit on holiday; read on to start planning your next long-haul getaway.

Thailand has long been a tourist favourite for Brits, whether for travelling youngsters or business people. Its capital, Bangkok (known locally as Krung Thep) was the most visited city in the world for several years in a row before Covid and is just a short journey away from the ancient city of Ayutthaya .

With dozens of famous white-sand beaches around the country (such as Railay and Ko Phi Phi ), as well as several areas of natural beauty (one of the most unique being Khao Sok National Park) and dozens of temples and palaces, Thailand offers anyone visiting the country a diverse mix of sightseeing, city experiences and relaxation – not to mention the nation’s delicious cuisine.

Best time to visit Thailand

With a rainy season falling between July and October, the best time to visit is between November and April, when temperatures are higher (with average highs in the early 30s). May is usually a quieter time to visit, but the sunshine may be interrupted by short rain periods.

Vietnam’s various areas of natural beauty are among the most notable in the region. Ha Long Bay is the country’s most famous natural area, while the beaches of Phu Quoc and the Cham Islands offer equal beauty in different settings. Other natural attractions include the caves of Phong Nha and Hang Son Doong, the Marble Mountains and the sand dunes at Mui Ne.

As for cities, Ho Chi Minh City , Hanoi and Da Nang are the best destinations for those who want to experience Vietnamese ‘hustle and bustle’ (Da Nang also has beach areas), while Hoi An is sometimes referred to as the ‘Venice of Vietnam’ due to its canals and the well-preserved Ancient Town comprised of wooden Chinese shophouses and French colonial buildings.

Best time to visit Vietnam

April and September fall just before and after the high season in Vietnam and also offer less humidity and lower temperatures than at the peak of summer. With weather that can vary quite drastically across the country in different months, these should give the best weather across the board too.

Singapore is a popular destination for British expats, with an estimated 50,000 living there. It’s a country that is almost unlike any other; its urban planning strategy has created a metropolis and enabled almost six million people to live in an area roughly half the size of London.

Despite its diminutive size, the country offers numerous attractions , from its Botanic Gardens (a Unesco world heritage site) and historical and art museums to the Gardens by the Bay , a nature park spanning 101 hectares, and a Universal Studios theme park. It also hosts a Formula 1 race, which takes place in September on the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Best time to visit Singapore

Singapore has significant rainfall all year, although the country’s dry season falls between February and April, when humidity levels are also at their lowest. Specifically, February and September offer the lowest rainfall and humidity, with average highs of around 31C. September also falls in low season.

By far the largest country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia lies at the southern end of the region and consists of roughly 17,500 islands, including Sumatra and Bali. With so many islands, it’s no surprise that the archipelago contains some of the region’s most attractive areas. Bali in particular is a tourism hotspot, while many of the islands offer tropical rainforests, rugged terrain and even volcanoes (the country sits within the Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to both eruptions and earthquakes).

Jakarta is the capital and largest city in the country and is located – along with the popular tourist town of Yogyakarta– on the island of Java. Idyllic locations include Lombok and the Raja Ampat islands; Bromo Tengger Semeru and Komodo National Parks offer unreal nature and wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Best time to visit Indonesia

The dry season usually runs from April to October, which is also when the country welcomes the most tourists. If you want to avoid crowds, May and June offer average highs of roughly 31C and over eight hours of sunshine per day.

Malaysia’s culture is an eclectic mix of European, Chinese, Indian and Malay influences, while the country itself is famous for its rainforest, beaches and the capital city of Kuala Lumpur , with the iconic Petronas Twin Towers being one of the country’s most iconic symbols.

Away from the capital, many tourists decide to visit the Malaysian part of Borneo – in the north of the island – where rainforest treks, wildlife viewing and relaxing on the beach are all possible. The Perhentian Islands and Sipadan are two other popular destinations, while nature-lovers flock to the Batu Caves, Mount Kinabalu and the Cameron Highlands.

Best time to visit Malaysia

You can expect fewer crowds from March to June; these months have average temperatures of around 28C, while June is the driest month of the year (though bear in mind you can still expect showers every month).

Philippines

Another archipelago, the Philippines consists of more than 7,000 islands. Under Spanish rule for over 300 years, it is one of the only predominantly Roman Catholic countries in the whole continent and has been widely influenced by Western culture and traditions. For those keen to see its cities, Manila is the capital while Quezon is the largest.

Tropical white-sand beaches are plentiful on the nation’s thousands of isles, while the volcanoes of Mayon and Tail offer dramatic scenery overlooking the water. Other sites include Sigma Lagoon, Pagsanjan Falls and the Batad rice terraces.

Best time to visit the Philippines

The Philippines dry season falls right in the middle of the low season for tourism. The driest months are between January and March, where there is little rainfall and humidity falls to much more tolerable levels. Expect temperatures of up to 24C – and lows of 15C – every day.

Cambodia welcomes visitors eager to learn about its complicated history and experience its mix of Asian and French culture. A largely rural country, only three of its cities are home to over 100,000 people despite the country’s 16 million-strong population. Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city, while Siem Reap is another metropolitan centre that also acts as the gate to Angkor Wat, an ancient temple which today is the largest religious structure in the world.

The country’s islands, such as Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem, contain pristine white beaches, sandy coves and coral reefs , and are popular spots for partying too. The Cardamom mountain range stretches over 4.4 million hectares of rainforest through the Southeast and into eastern Thailand, and is home to a vast range of wildlife, including sun bears, elephants and Siamese crocodiles. Tonle Sap lake is the largest in Southeast Asia, with its waters and floodplain home to over three million people and hundreds of different animal species.

Best time to visit Cambodia

Temperatures are at their lowest in the dry season between November and February, but you’ll still see average highs of 30C.

Laos is one of the continent’s smaller countries, and its shared borders – with Vietnam to the east, Thailand to the west and Cambodia to the south – give you an indication of the geography that you’ll find here. Whether you want to go through dense jungle on a cruise along the winding Mekong River, trek through the jagged karst around Vang Vieng or simply relax in the laid-back capital of Vientiane, there’s something to appeal.

Laos’ most important landmark is the Pha That Luang, a golden Buddhist stupa in Vientiane, while the capital’s other highlights include temples like Wat Si Saket and the old quarter. If you have time, visit the peaceful Song River and the town of Vang Vieng, before exploring the Unesco city of Luang Prabang and surrounding nature, including waterfalls, plunge pools and the banks of the Mekong.

Best time to visit Laos

The weather is Laos is best between October and April, when conditions are dry and not too warm. For river cruises, November through to January is best for high water levels, while August is both the wettest and most humid month.

How to Get to Halong Bay

  • Reunification Express Train
  • Private Car

Travel to Halong Bay is possible by many different modes of transport depending on where you’re coming from. Take a look at our quick guide to help you decide which option is best for you.

How to Get to Halong Bay

1. Motorbike

If you’re not too far away, one of the most exhilarating modes of transport available is the motorbike! Cruising through Vietnam’s gorgeous scenery on the back of your very own hog is a great experience. A bike trip will allow you to see more of the local lifestyle as you can take breaks at your leisure in some of the small towns around Northern Vietnam.

travel to ha long bay

Many travelers rent motorbikes as it’s a wonderful way to take in the sights and it won’t burn a hole in your wallet. Gas is cheap and you can often rent a bike for a cheap price from your hotel or hostel; if this is not possible a quick google search will help you find a reliable motorbike rental service. Keep in mind that you will have to pay a deposit for the bike, on top of the rental fee.

A trip from one city to another can take hours so you will need to take plenty of breaks to stretch your legs and enjoy some snacks and drinks. Keep in mind that this option is recommended for experienced riders only, as traffic in Vietnam can be very chaotic. A long motorbike trip is not advisable for a first-time rider.

  • Pros: Travel at your own pace: take breaks when you feel like it and arrive when you want to arrive! This is a great budget-friendly option, gas in Vietnam is very cheap! You can take in the scenery in a much more immersive experience when traveling by motorbike.
  • Cons: Driving in Vietnam can be dangerous and is not recommended for an inexperienced driver. A bike trip can become uncomfortable over long distances. The weather is unpredictable and a surprise rainstorm can put your travel plans at risk.

Below is the average distance between major cities in Vietnam and Halong bay, that may be helpful for your road-trip planning.

2. Public Bus

travel to ha long bay

Another budget way of travel would be the bus. There are a few types of buses available for long-distance travel in Vietnam, local buses, luxury buses, and private shuttle buses. Each of these options are fairly cheap depending on which company you go with. The local bus will actually be more like a coach. They stop a few times for breaks so there are opportunities to get snacks but more often than not the trips are long and you may want to eat on your own schedule so it’s advisable to take your own snacks and water.

If you need to travel overnight you can get a sleeper bus which allows you to fully lay down and sleep through the night, which can be quite comfortable or uncomfortable depending on the bus you take. Tickets can be bought at the station before boarding the bus. Choosing the local bus is a great option for budget travelers however if you pay less you often get less! If you wish to travel in more comfort you can pay a little more money to travel on a luxury bus which provides amenities such as Wifi, air conditioning, and comfier seats.

The second type of bus is a private shuttle bus. These are usually minivans, which can be much more comfortable than a coach if you are only driving for a few hours. They tend to be slightly more expensive but quicker than a local bus but most offer the additional service of pick up and drop off at your hotel which is a great plus. You can usually make a booking for a private shuttle bus through your hotel or hostel which makes this a very convenient choice.

  • Pros: Buses are cheap and pretty fast! If you pay a bit more you can travel with Wi-Fi. Private shuttle buses can offer pick up and drop off services. Private shuttle buses may also offer some amenities such as Wi-Fi and bottled water.
  • Cons: There isn’t much privacy on buses. The toilet situation may be grim or non-existent! Some buses stop to pick up extra passengers along the way which can slow down your trip.

Bus Timetables

3. reunification express train.

travel to ha long bay

One of the most popular ways to travel through Vietnam is by train! Vietnam has a great railway system. Traveling by train will give you the opportunity to really soak up the scenery at a slower pace than you would on a bus or a bike. Train tickets are extremely cheap, and you can choose between having a soft or hard seat or even a sleeper cabin. Depending on your ticket, a train journey can be a comfortable experience, although it is set to be a long one, as train travel is one of the slower modes of transport available.

You can book train tickets on the Vietnam Railways official website ( https://dsvn.vn ) and either print them out or pick them up at the station. Alternatively, you can ask your hotel or hostel to book tickets for you if you need some help.

  • Pros: Train travel is probably the safest of all the available options. It offers the greatest views of the scenery. And it’s cheap and comfortable!
  • Cons: Train travel can be quite slow so it’s not suited to those who are short on time.

There are no direct trains to Halong bay at the moment. Therefore, you need to book a train to Hanoi and from there take a bus or train to Halong.

4. Private Car

Traveling in a private car is also a very flexible choice as you will be picked up and dropped off in a location of your choosing, you can travel by your own schedule and stop when you want to stop. Private cars can be booked through a taxi company or through your cruise provider.

  • Pros: A private car will, of course, give you lots of privacy. It’s also probably the most comfortable way to travel. As well as the fastest way to get to Halong Bay! Some amenities are sometimes provided like Wi-Fi and bottled water.
  • Cons: This is one of the most expensive ways to get to Halong Bay.

If you are further afield than Hanoi, it may be possible to catch a flight to Van Don airport in Quang Ninh Province. Van Don airport is a brand-new airport opened in December 2018 and is about 53 km or 31 miles away from Halong City. Thanks to the new expressway that links Van Don airport to Halong City, the connecting travel time is only 1 hour in a car or bus. The only direct flights to Van Don airport are from Ho Chi Minh city, but it is possible to fly from other cities in Vietnam with a layover in Ho Chi Minh. Direct flights from Ho Chi Minh can be as cheap as $44 in the off-peak season. Flights to Van Don airport are currently operated by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airlines.

  • Pros: If you are coming to Halong Bay from across the country, then a flight can cut down travel time by days. The flight is short and comfortable.
  • Cons: Flying to Halong from cities other than Ho Chi Minh will mean a layover in Ho Chi Minh. Flying may not suit budget travelers.

travel to ha long bay

Sure to provide a fast, comfortable and fun trip, traveling by seaplane is a pretty unique experience and will help build some great memories of your trip to Halong Bay. The flight is only available from Hanoi and should take around 45 minutes.

The costs vary widely depending on the time of year due to the higher demand during peak season and depending on whether or not you choose to add an additional 15-minute scenic tour of Halong Bay onto your flight.

  • Pros: The fastest way to get to Halong Bay from Hanoi. Flying by seaplane is a priceless experience and a great way to get your first glimpse of Halong Bay.
  • Cons: Flying by Seaplane is not a budget efficient way to travel.
