Bangalore To Kannur Road Trip | A Family Travelogue & Experience

Bangalore to Kannur

Bangalore To Kannur – Hey, December is a great month for travel, and why not it’s mine and our Son’s birthday, and shouldn’t we going to some nice place? but what about this pandemic?

Obviously, we will follow all protocols, but let’s go to some nice places and celebrate the time. Alright, I am done with Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry, why not this small beach town of Kannur?

Above were my and my wife’s conversation about our much needed yearly trip that we usually undertake in the month of December, however this year as for all of you, ours was the very different year of 2021,

so let’s experience our much needed Bangalore to Kannur trip & travelogue and I hope it also motivates you to go for your trip with your kid.

Update-  You need negative RTPCR report at Karanataka-Kerala boarder in order to enter Karnataka from Kerala

BANGALORE TO KANNUR WHY?

The reason I selected was that from Bangalore the nearest beach either lies 300+ Km east or west of Bangalore. We did a lot of Mahabalipuram and Pondycherry trips from Bangalore and I do not want to repeat the same again. No, not again. Bangalore to Goa was one choice by road but we omitted it for one obvious reason and that is covering 650 Km with a 1-year-old kid with us.

Therefore Kannur falls in a perfect destination for the nearest and a bit not so touristy beach town from Bangalore and I am very good at convincing to take the trip. I was also very excited to cross the western ghat patch by road to reach the Kannur town.

The distance from Bangalore to Kannur is around 320 Km and it will depend on where you start from Bangalore, we started from South Bangalore and hence the distance is around 325 Km from Bangalore

BANGALORE TO KANNUR ROUTE?

probably the most searched keyword on Google on the best route from Bangalore to Kannur, my answer is very simple and straightforward on this question, take the most famous route and keep it simple. The only condition is that please start as early as Bangalore to avoid deadly city traffic and please save on time.

Bangalore city-> Nice Road->Mysore Bangalore highway-> bypass and take the highway to

Please remember, at the time of writing this time travelogue, the Bangalore-Mysore highway is getting widened and hence be ready to see very heavy traffic and diversions in the entire stretch.

OUR BEACH HOUSE IN KANNUR

Honestly, I am very choosy and specific about our stays, this doesn’t mean that I go for those fancy resorts, what I look for is unique stays where I am going, if the stay will give me an experience of a lifetime, it can be an offbeat resort, a homestay, a budget stays or a beach house. Now, Kannur is not very high on tourist’s radar, I found it a bit challenging in finding my style of stay. However, my search ends at a wonderful property called ARU’s Beach house .

It truly justifies its name and as you can see from the above picture, the sea is barely 50 meters from ARU’s beach house. I booked for 4 nights and 5 days stay, being the co-founder of this site TravelEscape , I got a good rate from the Booking.com site using my genius loyalty program. Check out the best rate from the site, or feel free to contact me for the best rate, I will definitely help you.

DRIVING ON BANGALORE KANNUR ROUTE

Yes, nothing sort of pure adventure, frustration, and then a rewarding one. Let me explain, as of now the Bangalore-Mysore road is in the development phase and hence you can understand the n number of diversions here and there and top of that bumper to bumper traffic in a town like Mandya, Ramanagram, etc. However, I am very optimistic that once the expressway is built and opened, the same stretch will be the best one to cover

Once you take Mysore bypass and head towards Virajpet highway, things start getting better and better and then you cross Nagarhole reserve forest, which is like the best one, except ready to slow down on speed breaker after every 100 meters or so.

Things get for the best once you will reach Madikeri, the best roads, the clean town, and the mountain freshness will welcome you with open hands, remember to pull down your vehicle’s glass and enjoy the breeze. You will love it.

DRIVING IN GHAT SECTION

This is where the challenge starts and you need to be the very best in your driving skill. I would definitely recommend you to take a good break before the ghat section and remain very attentive during the entire stretch of 26 Km of ghat section, horn, brakes, and precise attention will be your best friend. I really liked the ghat crossing, however, I will be honest to say, there were few blind and scary sections in the entire stretch.

Once you cross the ghat or come down from the mountain and cross an old bridge, you li enter Kerala state, in case you are in a commercial vehicle, please stop by near to RTO and take your permit, else you can keep driving or refuel as you go.

DRIVING IN KANNUR

Ah! the best experience as per me, you will see a sea change as compared to Bangalore, the reason is that it’s a sleepy town, less population, greenery around, clean and green town, you will also see some good number of great villas around Kannur town.

One recommendation, as Kannur is a beach town and hence you might get lost in the narrow roads of the town in reaching the destination, please slow down and keep asking for directions or reconfirm your route.

Though language is a big problem, I strongly believe you can communicate in sign language for sure. Why not try it out on your next travel? I li be honest again to say that we got lost in a very narrow bylane of Kannur town. All thanks to Google Maps :)

Bangalore-Kannur Road trip

An adventurous trip to Kannur, Kerela

We all love to soak ourselves in the sea, just sitting by and the waves just playing with us. Yes, our trip to Kannur, Kerela from Bangalore was to admire serenity as well as to do some adventure.

My extended family from Delhi was coming over and we planned a 3 days trip from Bangalore to Kannur. It was indeed a wonderful experience of exploring the unknowns.

bangalore to kannur places to visit

KANNUR, KERALA

Kannur in Kerela is a coastal city with beautiful and serene beaches. A recently opened International Airport has truly given it a boost in the tourism sector.

Kannur was well connected to rail and bus services and now it is even very well connected to air as well.

Kannur is located in North Kerela

  • 310 kms from Bangalore(Karnataka)(via Mysore)
  • 150 kms from Mangalore(Karnataka)
  • 300 kms from Kochi(Kerela)
  • 520 kms from Thiruvananthapuram(Kerela)

Kannur has a railway station as well but if anyone is traveling from Bangalore, then buses are recommended. There are regular night bus services to Kannur from Bangalore, Mangalore, and Kochi.

Kannur even has nonstop flights from Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ernakulam(Kochi) and Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, etc.

LET’S EXPLORE KANNUR

Kannur is still an untouched coastal city in Kerela and indeed a very beautiful city to be in. If we go deep in the history of the city, it was an important port town and an important trading center for the spice trade. It was also a British Military headquarters on India’s west coast. Kannur was earlier known as Cannanore.

Kannur is a great combination of beaches, temples, historical importance, art, and culture. As the city is progressing and seeing a huge rise in tourism and development, it is now a combined duty of the government, people and the visitors to conserve its art, culture, and integrity.

Although too much to explore but with our time constrain Kannur has given us the reason to admire it and come back again.

FEEL THE EXPERIENCE

Let’s have a lively view of our experience through our video

O UR JOURNEY, OUR WAY

Our journey started late with a few ups and downs (that is another story which gave us another lesson), We could start from Bangalore at 9 AM only. Google was showing 7.30 hrs means ETA at Kannur is 4.30 PM. We packed a few sandwiches and other stuff to avoid stopping in between.

We stopped for a quick breakfast at ….., the highway was also very good. We didn’t stop for lunch as we had whatever we were carrying handy. We wanted to reach Kannur before sunset as we didn’t want to miss that. En route to Kannur, we enjoyed our drive through coffee estates of Coorg area. Since we have already been to Coorg we didn’t stop, moreover, we were already running late so we were in a hurry.

We reached our destination just in time so to enjoy the sun setting by and kids to enjoy the most awaited time to just get into the sea. After kids had their gala time with the waves we just sat ashore and enjoyed the sun setting by.

All our fatigue and tiredness just vanished as soon as the waves touched us. We were relaxed and rejuvenated. Since all of us were tired we enjoyed our dinner and drinks and retired in our rooms. The only sound we could hear while sleeping was the sound of waves dashing the rocks. So soothing it was.

Every one of us got up early in the morning which was not expected since all of us were tired for the past two days. Our early morning beach walk and tea by the beachside helped us to forget our struggle for the last two days. After breakfast, we were ready for our upcoming adventurous activities.

bangalore to kannur places to visit

KAYAKING AT DHARMADOM BEACH AND ISLAND

Kayaking which is a very adventurous sport and is becoming very popular nowadays and the most important thing is that is sustainable and eco-friendly.

Kannur DTPC (District Promotion Tourism Council) in association with Xtreme Adventures has set us a camp at Dharmadom Island to promote eco-tourism through Kayaking and Rafting. The camp has a beachside tent accommodation which can accommodate around a group of 10 to 15 people.  A trained and professional team taught us the basics of Rafting and Kayaking. The rafts/kayaks/jackets were all of a very high grade.

The camp is ideal for people who want to explore and enjoy staying very close to nature and no luxury. A bonfire beside the sea adds a cherry on the cake. This place is not ideal for families with small kids as it is created in the natural surroundings with the least concrete.

Many activities enjoyed at this camp are

  • Kayaking to Dharmadom Island which is around 800 mts in the sea.
  • Kayaking to Margrooves of Malabar
  • Rafting in Tejaswini river.
  • Kayaking in Tejaswini river
  • Jeep Safari/Trekking to the nearby hill
  • Island walk to Dharmadom Island

One can choose from many options depending upon the season, time you have, number of people, etc.

OUR KAYAKING EXPERIENCE

We reached the camp at around 11 AM. After filling up the forms and gearing up with the life jackets we were at the beach for a quick detailing about Kayaking. After learning about the techniques we started Kayaking. Our instructor was Santosh and believe me he was very good and professional.

With our few falls in the sea, we have become more experienced. Once we crossed the waves it was easier to kayak and balance. It took around half an hour to reach the island. We got down at the Island and spent around 15 minutes to half an hour there.

Then started the bigger challenge which was to take the round of the island and then reach the shore. Since we were a group of 8 people and we enjoyed our time at the pristine island we were in high spirits. Learning kayaking techniques throughout, balancing our kayaks and coordinating with our partner was fun. It took us around 45 min to 1 hr to reach back ashore and by that time we were all tanned and exhausted.

With our experience, we learned it would have been more adventurous and better if done during the early morning or late evening hours because more waves make it more adventurous and sun also not so harsh. We had a bath and had a few snacks and tea. And enjoyed some more time sitting beneath the coconut trees before moving back.

ASIA’S LONGEST DRIVING BEACH-MUZHAPPILANGAD BEACH

Muzhappilangad beach which is more popularly known as the driving beach is Asia’s longest driving beach. It lies between Thalassery and Kannur and is around 5.5 Km in length. It’s a jewel to the Malabar coastline of India. Vehicles are allowed to drive in there with a government fee of Rs 30 per vehicle. It gets open early morning but closes at 8 PM. Few small eateries and snacks are available with many ice cream sellers attracting kids towards them.

OUR DRIVE ON THE DRIVE-IN BEACH

We reached the drive-in-beach around 2.30 noon and showed our heroics by taking our car right in the sea and enjoyed the never before experienced. Being Sunday it was rush.

After doing Kayaking and searched all possible options to eat but couldn’t get any. But we enjoyed the most was the fruits and vegetables dipped in chilly brine water called “uppilitta” in Malayalam and ice cream above it. You get many small snack shops and lots of ice cream vendors on the beach.

We headed back to our resort, right in time to see the sunset and enjoy a special occasion celebrated right on the beach. Everything for that was organized by the resort on our special request. Though the day was tiring adventure and fun was more.

THEYYAM- A LOCAL CULTURAL FEAST

A popular ritual and spectacular form of worship and art most popular in North Kerela. Theyyam brings about great stories to life through music, mime, and dance. Temples across the state have these performances from November to April(Depending on the dates as per Malayalam calendar). There are different forms of Theyyams performed at different temples. It is advisable to enquire from local people because they know the best.

Theyyam is generally performed early morning or late at night. In layman’s language it’s a traditional dance form depicting stories with Pooja and dance wearing very very heavy makeup, dress, and jewelry.

In our words, Theyyam was a treat to our eyes because witnessing such an art form is difficult these days. We were fortunate enough that we could plan our visit to Kannur during the ongoing Theyyam festival. As we have already shown our interest in Theyyam, Roshan the homestay owner arranged our visit to the specific temple. It was truly an amazing experience.

OUR FINAL DAY- BACK TO BANGALORE

No one feels like sleeping when you that playing with the waves will make you a child again. Yes morning we just soaked ourselves in the sea. After the late breakfast, we decided to see a few more places.

We headed for St Angelo’s Fort, being the Christmas holidays there was a huge rush, so much so that even the parking was a kilometer again. We went inside but due to overcrowdedness, we came back. Next was the Light House on the list but being Monday it was closed (weekly off).

bangalore to kannur places to visit

Then we headed for Payyambalam beach: a nice, long beach. It is very near to the main city. Nothing much to be done as lots of construction was going on for the development of the beach. We planned to do some more water sports activities there but couldn’t find any. Overall the experience was ok, had it been evening time the view and feeling would have been better.

As it was already 2 PM we decided to start our journey back towards Bangalore. Instead of the Mysuru route, we took the Hassan route which we find comparatively better in terms of road quality and congestion. Good hotels and public convenience options are very less till the time you touch NH. Since we didn’t have our lunch we stopped for some food at around 7.30 It was a small but very good restaurant. He made fresh tomato/onion sabzi with Kerala paranthas and believe me it was heaven.

We finally reached home at 10 PM with the accomplishments we did and the plans to visit Kannur again.

OUR STAY AT HARRIS BEACH HOMESTAY

Harris Beach Homestay is a beachside property located on a small cliff. It has 2 buildings with rooms on the ground as well as the first floors. All the rooms are sea-facing. Few rooms have a private balcony whereas few have a glass ceiling to admire the stars at night.

They also have a restaurant, with an in house kitchen and all the ingredients are either grown in the adjacent ancestral property or sourced locally. This place is also good for business meetups and small destination weddings as well. It is not a luxurious resort but gives a feeling of warmth and relaxation.

Sea facing rooms, easy access to the beach, the coziness of a home and their sustainable activities and attempts for community building were the reasons why we chose this.

Mr. Harris and his son Roshan were great hosts and helped us in whatever way we asked for arranging for Theyyam visit for us, cake cutting ceremony on the beachfront are few to mention. Due to the scarcity of time, we could not visit the local village and their organic farm but surely would like to visit again.

To conclude : It was a short trip started with few ups and downs, took us high with the adventures and calmed us with the waves, with mostly good memories and still craving for some more time we could have spent there.

As the owner and founder of Bengaluru Prayana , an organisation dedicated to heritage walks in Bengaluru/ Bangalore , embarking on this guided heritage walk in Kannur held particular significance for me. Given my profound appreciation for heritage and history, this experience was significant. I firmly believe in preserving and safeguarding our cultural legacy for the benefit of future generations, making this journey through Kannur’s heritage an essential and fulfilling endeavour.

Visit the Historical Site of St. Angelo Fort

Perched majestically on the shores of the Arabian Sea, the St. Angelo Fort in Kannur is an example of the rich history of Kerala’s Malabar Coast. This imposing fort, also known as Kannur Fort, holds a strategic position overlooking the sea, and its history is convoluted with the maritime trade routes and colonial ambitions that shaped the region.

Recommended Time: 2 hours Opening Times : 8 AM to 6 PM (Ticket Counter closes at 5:30 PM) Entrance Fee : Rupees 25 per adult for Indians and Rupees 300 per adult for Foreigners Purchasing of tickets is available at the ticket counter at the entrance

Constructed in 1505 by the Portuguese explorer Dom Francisco de Almeida , the fort was initially a wooden structure before being rebuilt with massive laterite stones by the Dutch in the 1660s. It eventually fell into the hands of the British East India Company in the late 18th century.

With its robust bastions and well-planned architecture, the St. Angelo Fort was a military stronghold during various colonial conflicts. Today, the fort is a well-preserved ruin where you will be transported back in time, imagining the echoes of historical events that unfolded within its walls.

St. Angelo Fort Kannur

With views of the Arabian Sea, the fort provides a stunning backdrop to its storied past. You can explore the remnants of the chapel, the lighthouse, and the underground chamber that once held ammunition. St. Angelo Fort has been declared a protected monument, ideal for history enthusiasts and curious travellers to delve into its fascinating narrative and discover the layers of heritage that define this iconic site on the Malabar Coast.

A cannon within the fort remains with an undischarged ball still lodged inside, preserving a historical moment frozen in time. During our visit to the fort, we had the opportunity to observe this cannon. Also, we witnessed the archaeological department routinely cleaning the cannonballs, adding a sense of authenticity to our historical exploration.

Watch the Theyyam Performance

As the day ends and the sun sets, displaying the golden glow over the rustic surroundings, the vibrant and mystical Theyyam performance comes to life in Kannur’s lush, natural setting. As the sacred grove becomes the stage for this ancient ritual, the air is filled with the heady scent of incense, and the rhythmic beats of traditional drums echo through the open space.

Recommended Time: 2 hours To witness a Theyyam performance in its authentic setting, an invitation from the family sponsoring the Theyyam ceremony is required. Alternatively, you can enjoy Theyyam performances at temples and other sacred locations by purchasing an entrance ticket.

Dressed in elaborate costumes decorated with vivid colours and intricate designs, the performers transform into demigods, embodying the divine spirits they invoke. The torches’ flickering flames illuminate their faces, creating a magical atmosphere that blurs the line between the earthly and the divine.

Theyyam during a family ritual

The sound of traditional music intensifies, setting the tempo for the dancers who move with an otherworldly grace. Each step and each gesture is a homage to centuries-old traditions passed down through generations. The audience witnesses the convergence of art, spirituality, and nature.

With their elaborate headdresses and exaggerated expressions, the performers transport to a realm where folklore and faith combine. The natural setting, such as the forest, adds authenticity to the experience, with the rustling leaves and distant sounds of wildlife becoming an integral part of the performance.

The pinnacle of my Kannur journey was experiencing the Theyyam performance in its authentic setting and the extraordinary moment of receiving personal blessings from the Theyyam afterwards. This encounter was profoundly special and stirred deep emotions within me, making it a truly unforgettable and touching experience.

The Kannur Cocktail is a refreshing blend that captures the essence of the coastal town’s vibrant culture and tropical spirit. With a base of coconut water, the cocktail is a mix of freshly squeezed jackfruit juice, ginger syrup, and fresh mint leaves.

Recommended Time: 30 minutes

Begin with a base of coconut water sourced from the pristine coasts of Kannur, providing a crisp and hydrating foundation. Add a freshly squeezed jackfruit juice splash to infuse a local twist, a fruit abundant in the region.

Refreshing Kannur Cocktail

For a hint of spice, add a touch of ginger syrup, paying homage to the region’s rich spice trade history. Muddle fresh mint leaves plucked from the town’s verdant gardens to elevate the cocktail.

Serve the Kannur Cocktail over ice in a coconut shell or a glass, garnished with a mint sprig and a jackfruit slice. The result is a harmonious blend of flavours that embodies the lively spirit of Kannur, making it the perfect libation to savour while basking in the town’s natural beauty.

The Kannur Cocktail is a substantial beverage that can serve as a meal. When my friend and I ordered the cocktail, it was notably robust, and ours even included an abundance of dry fruits.

Eat Plum Cake at Mambally’s Bakery

The legacy of Plum Cake at Mambally’s Bakery in Thalassery traces back to 1883 when a significant encounter unfolded between a British planter, Murdoch Brown, and the local baker, Mambally Bapu. Brown, intrigued by the rich flavours of the plum cake he had brought from England, sought Bapu’s opinion.

Mambally Bapu, with an inventive spirit, embarked on crafting the cake using local ingredients, with one exception—French brandy. Opting for a unique twist, Bapu substituted the brandy with a concoction of locally brewed liquor derived from cashew apples and the indigenous banana variety known as Kadalipazham. The result was a delectable masterpiece that left Brown thoroughly delighted.

Our Coastal Karnataka Road Trip

Since time immemorable we wanted to do a coastal Karnataka road trip. Driving through the beautiful, pristine, unexplored and lesser known beaches of Coastal Karnataka. Since the beginning of this year, we planned twice for this trip. And both the times we had to cancel. The first time was in January when we rather ended up in Goa once again, exploring Arambol beach Goa , experiencing the Artjuna Cafe at the Anjuna Beach Goa and our first time stay in an airbnb in India . Later, in June end, we again planned to do a coastal Karnataka road trip. We even booked our hotels. But then, due to heavy downpours, we had to cancel the plan last moment and instead had a trip to Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole .

Finally, in the middle of August, during the independence day weekend, we made a vert impromptu plan to take up the coastal Karnataka road trip. As the weather conditions were showing good for the next four to five days. So, in this article, I am going to provide all the details of the coastal Karnataka road trip and how to plan it. When is the best time to visit the places on the Karnataka coast. What to pack, what to do and what to see on a trip to Coastal Karnataka. Without delay, lets get started.

Table of Contents

Places to visit on the coast of Karnataka

Karnataka has one of the longest coastlines among the states of India. It is full of hidden unexplored beaches and beautiful islands. Here are some of the prime places to explore on a coastal Karnataka road trip at a glance. I will further elaborate about some of these in my future posts.

  • Mangalore – the buzzing industrial hub & prime port town of Karnataka
  • Udupi – Best known for it’s Sri Krishna Math & several other temples, along with some of the best beaches
  • St. Mary’s Islands – A set of 4 islands off the coast of Udupi that are best known for their basaltic rock formation
  • Murudeshwara – Known for the third largest statue of Shiva in the world, and a beautiful temple besides it, surrounded by sea on all 3 sides along with a beautiful turquoise blue water beach
  • Netrani Island – A beautiful island near Murudeshwara, better known across India for scuba diving courses and certifications offered here.
  • Marvante – One of the most senere beach drives in India, with the sea on one side and a river on the other.

  • Karwar – Yet another port town at the north coast of Karnataka, with some beautiful islands nearby and.

A perfect coastal Karnataka Trip Itinerary

Also, during our coastal Karnataka road trip, we extended our trip a little bit into Kerala and covered Bekal as well. Bekal is a small town on the north coast of Kerala with some very clean beaches, beautiful backwaters, a couple of historical forts including the majestic Bekal Fort and some beautiful temples. We had a one night staycation in Bekal at the Lalit Bekal Resort and Spa before starting off on our coastal Karnataka road trip. Here’s our complete guide to explore Bekal . You can combine a visit to Bekal along with coastal Karnataka road trip like we did. Or you can just plan a weekend getaway from Bangalore to Bekal as well.

Day 1 & 2 : A Bangalore to Mangalore road trip & Exploring Mangalore

bangalore to kannur places to visit

The first day of coastal Karnataka road trip starts with a Bangalore to Mangalore road trip. Although , you can do this whole trip in the reverse order as well. There are several routes to take from Bangalore to Mangalore and back. All of the routes from Bangalore to Mangalore require you to go through a section of ghat road on the western ghats. Some of these include –

Bangalore -> Hassan -> Sakleshpur -> Shiradi Ghat -> Mangalore

We took this route on our way back from Mangalore to Bangalore but were not impressed. Since there is a major highway widening work going on a major stretch from Mangalore to Sakleshpur. And the diversions were bone breaking 🙂 . There is a longer route from Bangalore to Mangalore. Till the expressway work continues it is better to take this route –

Bangalore -> Mysore -> Madikeri -> Mangalore

The above route on Bangalore to Mangalore road trip takes nearly an hour longer. But the road condition is excellent on this route.

bangalore to kannur places to visit

There is one more road trip to take from Bangalore to Mangalore via Charmadi Ghat. This is also a very scenic route. But, is very twisty and gets dangerous during heavy rains.

Bangalore -> Belur -> Charmadi Ghat -> Mangalore

Where to stay in Mangalore

We stayed at Hotel Ocean Pearl in the center of Mangalore city. The location was excellent. With all the basic needs nearby. And the highway just 5 minutes drive from the hotel.

There are a lot of comfortable hotels with good reviews in Mangalore. You can browse the complete list of hotels in Mangalore here .

However, there are not many known beach resorts in Mangalore itself. As it is a bigger city, a port and a big industrial hub of Karnataka as well.

Once you arrive in Murudeshwara, visit the Murudeshwara Temple. It is a temple particularly famous for it’s Shiva statue on the bank of the sea, which is the third largest Shiva statue in the world. Also, the temple itself is vast and beautiful, constructed on the slope of a hill. The temple is located besides beautiful Murudeshwara beach. So, you can visit the beach as well after visiting the temple. The water color of this part of the sea appeared most beautiful to me among all the beaches that I visited on my coastal Karnataka road trip. It was a beautiful shade of turquoise blue, indigo blue and aqua – something I have only seen in Dhanushkodi or during my trip to the Andaman Islands, particularly at Vijayanagara Beach and in Port Blair.

Finally we arrive at the end of our trip. Today, post breakfast, you can proceed from Karwar back to Bangalore. It will be good to start early today as the distance from Karwar to Goa will take around 10 hours to complete.

Bonus Places to add to your coastal Karnataka Road Trip

There are a few other places to add to your coastal Karnataka Road Trip if you have more time at hand. Some of these include –

Bekal and Kannur

Two sleepy coastal towns of Kerala – Bekal and Kannur are very near to Mangalore. Bekal is located just ~60km south of Mangalore. And Kannur is further ~50km south of Bekal. Both of these places have old churches, forts, beautiful sea beaches and some wonderful resorts for a perfect staycation away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Kannur even has India’s one and only drive in beach. Where you can actually drive your vehicle on the beach, through the waves.

On our own trip to Coastal Karnataka, we included Bekal in the plan. Here are our resources from our trip to Bekal that can help you plan your trip –

Our Bangalore to Bekal Road Trip

Bekal – things to do and places to see

A virtual tour of the Bekal Fort

Shimoga and Jog Falls

Jog Falls are one of most majestic waterfalls of India. They are located just 2 hrs drive from Udupi and hardly 1 hour drive from Murudeshwara. You can include them in your road trip to Coastal Karnataka.

Shimoga is one of the most green and beautiful fairy tale towns in Karnataka. It has a lot to offer to it’s visitors in terms of unexplored trekking routes, wildlife safari, Jog falls, beautiful green meadows and mystic weather almost all through the year. If you can, I will highly recommend adding Shimoga to your coastal Karnataka road trip.

What is the best time to do a coastal Karnataka road trip

Winter season from November to February is considered the peak season to visit coastal Karnataka. Although the temperature here is warm and humidity is high all through the year. It is more bearable and pleasant in the winter months. However, the winter months also see a lot of crowd. We visited coastal Karnataka during the monsoon season. As a result, we encountered much less crowd. And got our accommodation at much lower rates. Having said that, you must keep a tab on the weather if you also want to visit off-season during the monsoons. Since, sometimes it rains heavily in this region. And the downpours make it almost impossible to visit places. Also, places like St. Mary’s Island are off limit until september due to the rains.

bangalore to kannur places to visit

So, I will say, winter season is the best to do a coastal Karnataka road trip. And the dry spells during the monsoons are the second best. Temperature usually hovers around 30-32 degrees for the most part. Only in peak summer season of April and May it goes beyond 35 degrees and this time is really very uncomfortable to visit here.

What to pack for a coastal Karnataka road trip

Generally, anything that you would pack for a coastal trip to a tropical place. But, since the coastal Karnataka road trip also involves visiting a lot of religious places, you should include some traditional wear as well in your list of things to pack. Here’s a crisp list of things I packed for my coastal Karnataka road trip. You can improvise on it. Do check our travel packing tips and tricks to get more insights on packing like a pro for your trips.

  • Sunscreen lotions
  • Hats & Umbrellas to protect from both sun and rain
  • Light cotton cloths, preferably full sleeves otherwise you will get a very dark tanning
  • Traditional wear – saree or salwar kameez for women for visiting temples, shirt & full pants or dhoti / pyjamas for men
  • Lots of water to drink and keep you hydrates
  • Comfortable footwear, including hiking shoes if you will plan to go hiking in Gokarna.

Soochipara Falls

Soochipara Falls

he name Soochipara is derived from the local words “soochi” and “pars” meaning, “Rock” and “needle”. Since the water falls from a considerably great height, about 200 feet, it seems like needles falling on the rock. While you can always take a dip in the pool forming around the water drop, going under the falls directly will be an adventurous feat.

Vehicle movement towards this fall is restricted to about 2 kilometers from the fall after which you will need to walk the distance. It’s also a perfect opportunity for trekking or if you are interested, in rock climbing or rappelling. It is necessary that you spend too much time here as you will have to walk back to your vehicle for two kilometers. The ideal duration of stay is for 3-4 hours. Since the road to the falls is through the jungle, it gets dark pretty early.
