Day Trips from Larnaca without a Car

Last modified on June 14th, 2023 at 06:19

Cyprus is an island steeped in history and mythology. Known for being the legendary birthplace of the Greek Goddess, Aphrodite, the ‘Island of Love’ is home to sun-kissed shores and a rugged mountainous interior.

Cyprus is a country with natural beauty and cultural richness that is wholly disproportionate to its size. The country’s tumultuous and multilayered past has left ancient riches strewn across this island. Remnants of these archeological relics can still be seen today—littering wildflower-splashed mountainsides and overlooking azure seas.

During my six day Cyprus vacation, I took day trips from Larnaca to the far reaches of the island, packing my itinerary with some of the most beautiful destinations in the Mediterranean. My comprehensive six day Cyprus itinerary included many of the historical, natural and cultural gems that make the island a unique all-in-one destination.

Table of Contents

DAY TRIPS AROUND CYPRUS

While I used Larnaca as my home base, I spent the majority of my Cyprus itinerary exploring the country’s archeological sites and national parks. For an island its size, Cyprus has a remarkable number of places to see. The island features everything from verdant mountainous scenery to glistening sandy beaches.

Instead of spending my holiday on Larnaca’s beaches, I chose to use the city as a base and fill my week in Cyprus with five distinct day trips from Larnaca; one to Turkish-influenced North Cyprus and four to the southern half of the island.

The Kourion Ruins on the southern coast of Cyprus

Most tourism in Cyprus centers around beach-lounging and partying. As a result, traveling the island as a budget backpacker can be an unexpected challenge. In Cyprus, public transportation between smaller towns and cities is virtually nonexistent. And while buses connect the island’s largest towns, some of the country’s top attractions can be difficult to visit without a car or organized tour.

Since I was traveling Cyprus without a car, I relied on a combination of public buses and local tours. For day trips to Paphos, Kourion and Cape Greco, I depended on the country’s public transportation network. For day trips to the Troodos Mountains and North Cyprus, however, I joined organized excursions with Eman Travel.

Though I spent five nights in Larnaca, I dedicated little time to the city itself. Instead, I used Larnaca as a base for exploring Cyprus—partly because of its proximity to the island’s largest international airport, and partly because of its central location.

There are surprisingly few accommodation options for those looking to travel Cyprus independently and on the cheap. While in Larnaca, I stayed at the Katka Hostel . Though the hostel was poorly signposted and difficult to find, it proved to be an inexpensive and convenient base from which to explore the island.

Larnaca’s lack of hole-in-the-wall eateries surprised me, too. Most of the restaurants in downtown Larnaca are pricey chains that cater to Americanized palettes. Notable exceptions are the cheap and tasty Souvlaki.gr near St Lazarus Cathedral, and the Cyprus Taverna on Lordou Vyronos Street.

The beautiful St Lazarus Cathedral located near the waterfront in downtown Larnaca

Though Larnaca lacks big-name tourist attractions and must-see sites, the city has a pleasant restaurant-lined waterfront and a handful of interesting places to see—including a small beachside castle, a palm-lined promenade and the beautiful St Lazarus Cathedral.

CAPE GRECO NATIONAL PARK DAY TRIP

Following a fantastic day trip to North Cyprus , I decided to spend the following day on a self-guided day tour to Cape Greco National Park.

The Cape Greco Peninsula is one of the most beautiful places in Cyprus. The park lies near Ayia Napa, in the country’s southeastern corner. The area is somewhat reminiscent to Comino Island , with its cave-punctured cliffs, rugged hillsides and captivating shades of blue.

Cape Greco Caves

Multiple buses a day make the journey between Larnaca and Ayia Napa. The buses leave from the Larnaca waterfront and travel along the island’s southern coast to downtown Ayia Napa.

From Ayia Napa, bus 101 travels to the Cape Greco Visitor Center. Ayia Napa is also the gateway to Nissi Beach—one of the most beautiful family-friendly beaches in the Middle East .

Since the Cape Greco Visitor’s Center was closed during my visit, I picked a path and began to wander. The walk along the eastern side of Cape Greco is beautiful. The shadeless path weaves through brush and passes by a blue and white church, a delicate stone arch and numerous sweeping views of the sea. After walking along the eastern side of the peninsula and stopping every few feet to take photos, I followed a sign for the Cape Greco Sea Caves.

When I reached the caves at the water’s edge, the beauty of the water stopped me in my tracks.

Cape Greco Sea Caves

The area around the sea caves is home to some of the most mesmerizing shades of blue I’ve ever seen. Before visiting Cape Greco, I never knew so many shades of blue existed in nature. The water’s colors ranged from indigo to sapphire and from cobalt to turquoise.

I was totally and utterly in awe.

PAPHOS DAY TRIP FROM LARNACA

The following day, I hopped on another bus and headed westward, toward Paphos . I’d read somewhere that Paphos is one of the top places to see in Cyprus. I’d also read that the city is vastly underwhelming and doesn’t live up to its status as the 2017 European Capital of Culture. Since Paphos constitutes a convenient day trip from Larnaca using public transport, I decided to make a trip out west to see for myself.

Paphos is one of Cyprus’ most historically rich cities. Home to two large archeological sites (the Paphos Archeological Park and the Tombs of the Kings) it is a treasure chest for history buffs and lovers of antiquities.

Wildflowers in Paphos, Cyprus

When I arrived in Paphos, I immediately hit the ground running. I strolled along the waterfront and snapped a few photos of the Paphos Fort. Then, I made my way to the Paphos Archeological Park in order to see some of the most beautiful mosaics in the eastern Mediterranean.

PAPHOS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK

There is something indescribably beautiful about the Paphos ruins. The ancient city sits tucked up against the ocean, its remnants strewn among rippling grasses that are dotted with poppies and yellow daisies.

I meant to spend an hour at the Paphos Archeological Park. On the bus ride, I’d meticulously planned out my day—mapping out the amount of time to spend at the various attractions in order to make it back to the bus stop in time for my return trip to Larnaca.

Mosaics in Paphos, Cyprus

But somehow, while admiring the exquisite mosaic floors of the House of Dionysius, two and a half hours sped by and I found myself rushing toward the exit as fast as my legs could carry me.

THE TOMB OF THE KINGS

After visiting the archeological park, I still hoped to make it to the Tombs of the Kings. I walked along the oceanfront promenade as quickly as I could, hoping to somehow shave a few minutes off the maps.me estimate.

I made it to the Tombs of the Kings far later than I had originally planned. And, breathless and gasping for air, I paid the €2,50 entrance fee and began exploring.

The Tombs of the Kings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies 2km north of the Paphos Harbor. The tombs, many of which date back to the 4th century BC, never actually housed any kings. Instead, the rock-hewn chambers are thought to have accommodated Paphos’ aristocrats and high-level officials.

Like the Paphos Archeological Park, the Tombs of the Kings overlooks the cobalt Mediterranean waters. While listening to a soundtrack of crashing waves, I sped around the area’s pathways–climbing up and down stairs, peeking into small chambers and squeezing through passageways.

Tomb of the Kings in Paphos, Cyprus

I found the tombs to be impressive, in large part because I wasn’t really sure what to expect.

Had I had more time, I would have loved to spend a few hours meandering about the tombs and soaking in the views of the sea.

Yet since I was traveling to Paphos as a day trip from Larnaca, I had to turn back prematurely to ensure I would have enough time to make the last return bus.

LIMASSOL AND KOURION FROM LARNACA

I had such a wonderful time meandering through the archeological wonders of Paphos, that I decided to spend my next day in Kourion–another of Cyprus’ top historical sites. Kourion sits atop a steep hill that overlooks the ocean. It is a popular day trip from Larnaca, and accessible using public transport.

To travel between Larnaca and Kourion, I had to change buses in Limassol. A direct bus from Larnaca to Limassol leaves every few hours (7 euros roundtrip). From Limassol,  bus #16 travels the remainder of the way to Kourion.

Kourion is a spectacular place to visit. Built in the 2nd century BC, the ancient ruins were once part of an important city state in southwestern Cyprus. The ruins sit perched on a hillside, with sweeping views of the precipitous cliffs.

Kourion Cliffs

I spent a few hours at the archeological site, admiring the historical relics and the Mediterranean Sea. A walk around the ruins brought me to a well-preserved Greco-Roman amphitheater and various mosaic-laden rooms and chambers. Some, including the House of Achilles and the House of Gladiators, had mosaics that rivaled those in Paphos.

After soaking in the spectacular views of Kourion, I caught the bus back to Limassol and ate a fabulous traditional Cypriot meal at the Kipriakon Restaurant. Once I filled my stomach with delicious home-style comfort food, I spent the remainder of my day trip strolling along Limassol’s pleasant promenade.

DAY TRIP TO NICOSIA AND THE TROODOS MOUNTAINS

I spent the last day of my Cyprus itinerary exploring the island’s mountainous interior. Since the interior of Cyprus is poorly connected by public transport, I chose to join an organized tour for a whirlwind adventure through Nicosia and the Troodos Mountains.

cyprus day trips from larnaca

NICOSIA: A DIVIDED CITY

My day tour to the Troodos Mountains included a brief visit to Nicosia. During the visit, I spent about an hour meandering the streets of the old town and peeking into the Turkish-controlled areas of North Cyprus .

In contrast to the day trip I took to the northern towns of Kyrenia and Famagusta , my day trip to Nicosia and the Troodos felt slightly rushed. Both Larnaca and the Troodos would have been better suited for a full day of exploration.

KAKOPETRIA VILLAGE, TROODOS MOUNTAINS

From Nicosia, my day tour continued with a pit-stop in Kakopetria Village. The rustic Kakopetria village is amongst the most beautiful in Cyprus. Nestled in the Solea Valley, amid verdant trees and alongside bubbling rivers, the town is an ideal place for a quiet retreat.

cyprus day trips from larnaca

After allocating about an hour to Kakopetria, our tour proceed to the village of Troodos, high in the mountains. There, we ate lunch at the Troodos Hotel , before continuing toward Omodos.

Omodos is an attractive village near Cyprus’ wine region. Despite a proliferation of souvenir shops and boutique hotels, the village’s backstreets have a timeless cobbled charm. As I wove through the city’s narrow alleyways and peeked into its courtyards overflowing with orange trees, I had the sensation of stepping back in time.

cyprus day trips from larnaca

Though touristy, the small village of Omodos is worlds away from the high-rise resort towns and beach clubs that characterize much of southern Cyprus’ coastline.

Surrounded by the vineyard-carpeted slopes of Cyprus’ krashoria , the sleepy town of Omodos is the perfect place to sit back, sip a glass of wine, and soak in the beauty of Aphrodite’s homeland.

Cyprus is nicknamed the ‘Isle of Love.’ And there is a lot to love about the enchanting island.

My six day Cyprus itinerary gave me a varied sampling of the island’s offerings. Throughout Cyprus, mountaintop castles and Byzantine churches lay sprinkled about—revealing ancient tombs, intricate mosaics and sites dripping with historical significance. From flower-speckled mountainsides to water so blue it matched the sky, my excursions around Cyprus revealed the country’s beauty, introduced me to its ancient history, and allowed me to understand a bit more about its complicated political present.

cyprus day trips from larnaca

Ayia Napa renowned for its spectacular nightlife, located on the east coast of the Island, has fine sandy beaches with crystal clear turquoise sea, the resort offers plenty of exciting activities for families. Various water sports, including waterskiing, jet skiing, paragliding and scuba –diving are on offer at beaches in and around the town, and boat trips around Cape Greko peninsula and north towards Famagusta leave from the marina. For the children a visit to the Water world water park and EMW Go-Karts make good breaks from the beach. Just along the coast from Ayia Napa are some of the most beautiful beaches found on the island with their fine white sand and turquoise blue waters.

But Ayia Napa is also home to significant history, including the Ayia Napa Monastery (dedicated to the Virgin Mary), which is its archaeological landmark.

Cape Greko is another distinctive part of Ayia Napa, an area of extreme beauty, with secluded coves, diving and snorkeling are highly popular activities in this area due to a number of ships being foundered just off Cape Greko over the past centuries.

Located to the north of Cape Greko and close to the principal town of the area, Paralimni, Protaras is just 15 minutes drive from Ayia Napa. A relaxed resort ideal for families, couples and singles of all ages, Protaras with its superb crystal clear waters and fine sandy beaches provides an idyllic holiday setting. Its beaches are probably the finest in Cyprus, and include the famous Fig Tree bay, whilst nearby Cape Greko offers superb snorkeling and scuba diving.

Overlooking the resort is the elegant Ayios Elias church, beautifully lit up at the night and the surrounding countryside is scattered with windmills which were once used to tap underground fresh water reserves for irrigating the citrus groves. Protaras beach is a European blue flag beach and located 55 kilometres from Larnaka and the airport.

15 Wonderful Day Excursions from Paphos, Cyprus

Posted by Francesca Brooking | Cyprus , Europe | 0

15 Wonderful Day Excursions from Paphos, Cyprus

Paphos is a popular destination in Cyprus. The sunny, seaside city is close to an international airport and offers plenty to keep you happy whether it’s ancient history, glorious beaches or authentic places to eat.

Its proximity to some of the island’s most beautiful sites makes it a fantastic base to explore more of Cyprus too.

So, if you’re looking for day excursions from Paphos, you’re in luck. I’ve put together a list of some of my favourite places to visit on the island and the easiest ways to reach them.

Don’t worry if you don’t drive. Most of these trips can be done without a car, which is a win for sustainable travel too!

From UNESCO-certified villages to the birthplace of a goddess, discover 15 wonderful day trips from Paphos, Cyprus.

Map of the day excursions from Paphos

Be amazed at avakas gorge .

Narrow limestone rock formations creating a tunnel known as the Avakas Gorge in Paphos.

Avakas Gorge is one of the best day excursions from Paphos.

A true natural gem, it was formed by a stream which wore through the limestone rock over thousands of years, creating 30-metre-high walls and rock formations.

You can hike the 10.6km circular nature trail and spot amazing native flora such as the endemic centauria akamantis plant and wildlife including hares, lizards and falcons.

One important thing to note, parts of the trail are rated difficult as some of the rock formations are narrow and slippery. Sturdy footwear is advised.

The gorge is about a 40-minute drive up the coast to the beginning of the Akamas Peninsula.

If you would prefer to step your Paphos day excursion up a notch, I recommend travelling to Avakas Gorge in a 4×4 like this highly-rated Jeep safari tour.

The tour includes a trip to the stunning baths of Aphrodite’s Grotto and Lara Bay Turtle Conservation. It also includes sea caves, a shipwreck and a wine tasting.

The small group tour is very popular so book it in advance to avoid disappointment!

Visit Lara Bay Turtle Conservation

A golden sandy beach curved around with foothills inland and clear blue waters of Lara Bay in Cyprus.

If you’re a wildlife lover then Lara Bay Turtle Conservation Station is a must-visit.

Located about 27 minutes by car from Paphos as you had towards Akamas Peninsula, Lara Bay is a secluded beach dedicated to nesting and hatching turtles.

The conservation team is run by the State Department of Forests and Fishery, and it works to ensure that baby turtles hatch and make it to the sea successfully.

The best time to visit is between mid-May to August when turtles lay their eggs and the babies hatch. All nests are protected and you can only access the beach on foot so that you don’t disturb them.

Explore Omodos Village

Traditional lace cloths hung up around a doorway surrounded by plants in Omodos Village, Cyprus.

Omodos is a pretty UNESCO-certified mountain village about an hour’s drive from Paphos.

It’s one of the most popular Cypriot villages but don’t let that put you off! It was a top favourite place of mine when I visited Cyprus. I loved exploring its labyrinth of cobblestone streets and picturesque cottages.

Plenty of opportunities for souvenir shopping can be found in its many artisan shops too.

You’ll spend a happy few hours browsing tables laden with sweets, glassware, fresh bread, homemade arts and crafts, and lace.

Make sure you have a look at the True Cross Monastery, one of the island’s oldest historic monasteries. It’s also thought to be the home of the True Cross.

Rather not drive? This tour combines a trip to Omodos with Kykkos Monastery and the highest village in the Troodos Mountains.

It also includes a stop at Paphos Forest, and you have a chance to enjoy the views across the island at Throni.

Sample the wine at Oenou Yi Winery

Views of vineyards and a village nestled among the foothills of the Troodos Mountains at Oenou Yi Winery.

A couple of minutes’ walk from Omodos Villas is Oenou Yi Winery, a contemporary winery overlooked by Mount Olympus.

It was founded in 2017 so it’s relatively new but it’s helmed by a tenth-generation winemaker so I can attest that the wine is pretty great.

I did a tour of the winery before stopping off at the tasting room where a good few wines were sampled. I finished off the tasting with a shot of Zivania, a Cypriot pomace brandy.

My absolute favourite thing about Oenou Yi Winery isn’t actually the wine, but the restaurant terrace.

As you go through two enormous glass doors, you’re greeted by panoramic views of the Troodos Mountains and Omodos nestled among vineyards.

It’s a pretty spectacular choice if you’re looking for day excursions from Paphos with incredible views!

Enjoy a leisurely day at Tochni Village

Tochni Tavern view for Cyprus itinerary. Pink flowers surround a terrace with a view of Tochni village on the hill opposite.

With a history spanning more than ten or twenty centuries, Tochni is thought to be one of the oldest villages in Cyprus.

Many medieval houses made from traditional Cypriot stone still stand today. They’re protected under an agrotourism designation which aims to keep traditional Cypriot heritage alive in small rural communities.

The village is a fascinating higgledy-piggledy labyrinth of winding streets and ancient houses. One of the best things to do here is simply wander and see where the streets take you. Look out for the ruins of a Latin church in the village centre.

If you find yourself getting peckish, head to Tochni Tavern which has great views of the village and quite possibly the best halloumi around. Seriously, I couldn’t get enough of it!

Tochni is just over an hour’s drive from Paphos, between Limassol and Larnaca so it’s best enjoyed combined in a short one-day road trip along the south coast of Cyprus.

Feel the power of Millomeris Waterfall

Image of Millomeris Waterfall tumbling down rock into a pool below with a tree growing beside it in Cyprus.

Deep among the pine trees of the Troodos foothills is the village of Pano Platres. This quiet and unassuming village has three surprising stories to tell.

First, it was here that Daphne du Maurier planned and wrote some of the famous gothic novel, Rebecca.

Second, the Nobel prize winner for Literature, George Safaris also stayed here.

Third, it’s home to one of the tallest waterfalls in Cyprus – Millomeris Waterfall.

The waterfall is a spectacular sight hidden among the trees. Water tumbles down the side of a rock at a height of 15 metres into the pool below.

The best way to access it is via the Millomeris Waterfall Nature Trail which takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Why not combine Millomeris Waterfall with all the top sights of the local area on a small group day tour from Paphos?

This tour will take you to the 15th-century Venetian Bridge in an ethereal location surrounded by forest. You’ll also visit Omodos and the highest point of the Troodos Mountains.

Set sail in the Blue Lagoon

The coastline of the northern coast of the Akamas Peninsula with the clear blue waters of the Blue Lagoon in Cyprus.

Possibly one of the most famous day trips from Paphos is the Blue Lagoon. Found on the northern side of the Akamas Peninsula, the Blue Lagoon is characterized by a dazzling blue sea within a sheltered bay.

Both fairly shallow and warmer than the rest of the sea, it’s a perfect place for swimming and snorkelling. You can also find a remote yet beautiful beach which is only accessible by boat or a bumpy road which best suited to 4x4s.

Save yourself the stress of risking your car or rental vehicle by taking a tour that includes a three-hour boat ride in the Blue Lagoon instead.

This popular tour includes a wine tasting and a visit to Aphrodite’s Grotto before you set sail on the Blue Lagoon where you can relax and swim to your heart’s content.

Fall in love at Aphrodite’s Rock

Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus, surrounded by blue sea.

If you know your Greek mythology, you’ll be familiar with Aphrodite the Goddess of Love. Legend has it that she was born on a rock which sits just offshore between Paphos and Limassol.

Known as Aphrodite’s Rock or Petra tou Romiou (Rock of the Roman), you can visit the rock today. It’s thought that any person who swims around it will be blessed with eternal beauty.

Whatever you believe, it’s a pretty sight and well worth a stop at Aphrodite’s Rock Viewpoint to look down at from the shore.

Alternatively, you can spend a leisurely few hours on the pebble beach which runs beside it.

One thing to note, the current was quite strong when I was there so just be careful if you’re thinking of swimming after that eternal beauty!

For non-drivers, this tour from Paphos includes a tip to Aphrodite’s Rock as well as the ancient Greek city of Kourion and Limassol Castle. This is a great excursion from Paphos for seeing the south coast of the island.

Tour the Troodos Mountain Villages

Agios Ioannis Lombadistis, a monastery in Kalopanayiotis. A road trip to the mountain villages is one of the best day excursions from Paphos, Cyprus you can do.

Cyprus’ mountain villages hold the keys to centuries of heritage and culture. Here, rural industries have been preserved for generations whether it’s crop cultivation, winemaking or handicrafts.

Many villages are members of Cyprus’ agritourism project which works to protect artisanal and agricultural businesses through tourism.

Discover the best villages to visit for halloumi, wineries, mezes and crafts in my guide to the Troodos Mountain villages.

Day trips from Paphos to the Troodos Mountains are tricky with public transport. If you don’t fancy driving, I recommend doing this top-rated tour.

A mix of culture and food, the tour picks you up from Paphos and takes you to villages such as Omodos and Lofou. Highlights include halloumi tasting and trying traditional wine at a local winery!

Eat around the island on a food tour

One of the best excursions from Paphos, Cyprus is a food tour of the island. In the image, two hands dig into a Greek salad with serving spoons next to bread and other side dishes sit on the table.

There’s no better way to get to know a place than through your stomach. Cyprus has some incredible culinary offerings from creamy halloumi to traditional sweet wine.

Explore the island’s mouth-watering heritage nestled within the Troodos Mountains on a small group food and wine tour.

One of the top Troodos tours from Paphos, you’ll be taken to five different product workshops, sample Cypriot delicacies and visit a winery.

To top it off, you’ll have lunch at a traditional village tavern where the meze platters will be rolling out non-stop.

If there’s one thing Cyprus knows how to do exceptionally well, it’s feeding you up on delicious food. Seriously, I definitely came back from my trip heavier but happier!

Editor’s tip: If you get the chance to try a local meze, my biggest advice to you would be don’t fill yourself up on the first few plates. Those plates just keep coming. Delicious, though!

Find the hidden Adonis Waterfalls

The sheltered Adonis Waterfalls, surrounded by trees and mossy rocks in Cyprus.

Add a little adventure to your Cyrus trip with a quad bike tour to the hidden Adonis Waterfalls. It’s the only place in Paphos where the water stays freezing cold all year round.

This secretive spot on the Akamas Peninsula is accessible by a rugged track which takes you past Coral Bay, the sea caves shipwreck and Lara Bay Turtle Conservation.

By the time you’ve ridden on the buggy and had a leisurely lunch you’ll want to cool off with a dip in the pools underneath Adonis Waterfall – so bring your swimwear on this Paphos day trip!

Discover new and ancient history at Choirokitia & Famagusta

Image of the crenellated towers of Othello Castle in Famagusta in Nothern Cyprus.

There’s one part of Cyprus I haven’t spoken about yet, Northern Cyprus, a territory under Turkish control.

Despite political tensions and a military presence, it’s safe. However, if you want to visit, I recommend going on a tour just to be sure. Plus, it’s pretty far if you’re attempting it as day excursions from Paphos on your own.

This full-day Choirokitia & Famagusta Guided Tour takes you from Paphos to the village of Choirokoitia for coffee and a chance to see one of the oldest and most important Neolithic settlements in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Next, it’s onwards to the United Nations Green Line and the ruins of the Kingdom of Salamis which date back to the 12th century BCE.

You’ll see the city of Famagusta with its Gothic churches and Venetian walls.

There will be some free time to explore here but don’t miss the guided walk to the Varosi Ghost Town to see abandoned houses which have been closed off since 1974.

Important: You’ll need a passport to cross the border to the Northern territory. Some nationalities need a visa too.

Visit the city of Limassol

Limassol from above next to the blue waters of the sea in Cyprus.

Just under an hour’s drive along the coast from Paphos is the city of Limassol.

It’s the second largest urban area on the island after Nicosia so it’s pretty built up. There are still some interesting sites and attractions that make it worth visiting.

History lovers should visit the centuries-old Limassol Castle which is now home to the Cyprus Medieval Museum. Limassol Old Town can be found in the heart of the city with its narrow streets and traditional markets.

Saripolou Square is the best place to go for coffee, cocktails and food – although it’s also the busiest neighbourhood in the city centre!

Find ancient history at Kourion Archaeological Site

Ancient Roman mosaics in the remains of a bathhouse in Kourion Archaeological Site in Cyprus.

Paphos excursions don’t get much better for history lovers than Kourion Archaeological Site.

Just under an hour’s drive from Paphos lies the remains of what was once one of Cyprus’ most important city-kingdoms.

Kourion was destroyed in an earthquake in 365 AD, but it’s home to some magnificent Greco-Roman structures such as the 2nd-century BCE amphitheatre and the House of Eustolios with 5th-century mosaics.

There’s also the House of Achilles, the House of the Gladiator and the remains of the Roman Agora all on the same site.

It’s well worth a visit if you’re interested in ancient history – plus the amphitheatre is still used today for concerts and performances!

The entrance fee is about €8.50 per person for a day pass.

Take an eco-friendly trip with Eco Tour Adventures

A stone cottage window with brown shutters surrounded by potted plants in Arsos Village, Cyprus.

If you’re keen to see the real Cyprus in an ethical way, I recommend booking a small group tour with Eco Tour Adventures.

The top-rated tour operator specialises in off-the-beaten-track adventures to sites that are normally inaccessible to commercial tourism.

Guides with 20+ years of experience drive its fleet of 4×4 cruisers and are passionate about Cypriot culture.

There are three day tours from Paphos you can do. Choose to cruise up the Akamas Peninsula, take a quiet dip in the Blue Lagoon or explore the villages of the Troodos Mountains.

Day excursions from Paphos final thoughts

Twin cottages in Tochni village, Cyprus with blue shutters and pink and white flowers.

Paphos is a fantastic base from which to explore Cyprus thanks to its proximity to historical sites, incredible beaches, traditional villages and wineries.

Day trips from Paphos are a lot easier if you have your own car as public transport isn’t particularly reliable on the island. However, you can still enjoy these excursions in a sustainable way by opting to do a small group tour instead.

First shipment of aid to US-built floating pier in Gaza leaves Cyprus

The US vessel, loaded with much-needed humanitarian assistance, departed from the Larnaca port on Thursday.

cyprus day trips from larnaca

A shipment of humanitarian aid has left a port in Cyprus and is on its way to the US-built pier in Gaza, the first delivery to the newly built ramp, Cyprus’s foreign minister said on Thursday.

The US vessel, loaded with much-needed humanitarian assistance, departed from the Larnaca port with the aim of transferring as much aid to Gaza as possible through the maritime corridor, said foreign minister Constantinos Kombos.

The trip comes some two months after US President Joe Biden gave the order to build the large floating platform several miles off the Gaza coast that will be the launching pad for deliveries since not enough aid was getting in through land crossings, which require stringent checks by Israel, and by air drops.

The relief is desperately needed, with the United Nations saying people in Gaza are on the brink of famine and as Israeli troops ordered the evacuation of 100,000 Palestinians from Gaza’s southern city of Rafah.

Cyprus Israel Plestinians

However, humanitarians say aid coming by sea will not be enough to alleviate the dire humanitarian suffering in Gaza and that the most effective way to get assistance in is by land.

The closure of the Rafah crossing and the nearby Kerem Shalom crossing this week cut off the entry of food, supplies, and fuel for aid trucks and generators.

Aid groups warn they have only a few days of fuel before humanitarian operations and hospitals around Gaza begin to shut down.

Israel said it reopened Kerem Shalom on Wednesday, which was shut after Hamas mortars killed four Israeli soldiers nearby, but aid groups said no trucks were entering the Gaza side.

Trucks let through from Israel must be unloaded and the cargo reloaded onto trucks in Gaza, but no workers in Gaza can get to the facility to do so because it is too dangerous, the UN says.

Israel Palestinians

It remains uncertain whether Israel will launch an all-out invasion of Rafah as international efforts for a ceasefire continue.

Israel has said an assault on Rafah is crucial to its goal of destroying Hamas after the militant group’s October 7 attack on southern Israel that left 1,200 dead and 250 as hostages in Gaza.

The United States, which opposes a Rafah invasion, has said Israel has not provided a credible plan for evacuating and protecting civilians.

The war has killed more than 34,800 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials, and has driven some 80% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million Palestinians from their homes.

President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he would not supply offensive weapons that Israel could use to launch an all-out assault on Rafah, over concern for the wellbeing of the more than one million civilians sheltering there.

Mr Biden, in an interview with CNN, said the US was still committed to Israel’s defence and would supply Iron Dome rocket interceptors and other defensive arms, but that if Israel goes into Rafah, “we’re not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used”.
