Pilot whales can be seen in Tenerife year-round, but they are most commonly spotted in the summer months from June to September . Sperm whales can also be seen throughout the year, but they are more commonly spotted from May to October . Killer whales , also known as orcas, are less common and are typically spotted from June to September .

Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins can be seen year-round, but they are most active in the warmer months from May to October .

It is worth noting that whale watching is weather dependent, and the chances of spotting whales and dolphins may be higher on days with calm seas and good visibility. The first floor not only allows you closer dolphin contact , but it is also the ideal spot for enjoying a wonderful sea bath , when indicated by the crew. Please make sure to remain patient and quiet at any moment, so you don’t scare the dolphins and fully enjoy this unique experience among them. Dolphins are naturally popping up all around us, so just be attentive, and you will be able to get very close to them.

After the dolphins encounter, feel free to climb down the boat ladder and enjoy, during the break, a fortifying sea bath and/or lunch.

Ha sido una experiencia increíble. Hemos pasado dos horas viendo cetáceos en diferentes lugares. Hemos visto delfines, calderones y una ballena de 16 metros! Lo van explicando todo, cuidan mucho las restricciones sanitarias y respetan el medio ambiente. Sin duda, una experiencia genial para toda la familia.

Surtout surtout..si vous voulez vous régaler..aller voir les dauphins dans la partie sous marine…vous les verrez monter, descendre, nager…et vous les verrez beaucoup mieux que sur le bateau ! The Barranco de Masca  is one of the most popular hiking trails in Tenerife , Canary Islands. This ravine is in Teno Rural Park and, after being closed to the public for more than 3 years, you can visit the Masca Gorge on weekends and holidays.

The Masca hiking trail takes you down the famous ravine to Masca Beach, considered one of the best beaches in Tenerife . Once on the beach, you can take a boat ride to Los Gigantes or begin your return ascent to Masca village .

The Masca gorge hike is difficult, and you must be in good physical condition to do it, but I assure you that it’s well worth it! The surrounding landscape is gorgeous, and the impressive rock walls are otherworldly. It’s undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Tenerife .

In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you should know about hiking through the Barranco de Masca in Tenerife, as well as the new restrictions now that Masca Gorge is open .

Is Masca Gorge open? New restrictions in Masca, Tenerife

Before the route in Masca, Tenerife closed , you could choose between doing the entire hike on foot, or only hiking the descent or ascent with a boat ride to Los Gigantes . However, the pier is currently closed, so the boat option is unavailable. If you’d like to do the round-trip Masca Gorge hike , you’ll have to do both the descent and ascent on foot. Be aware that hiking up the ravine is very challenging, so it’s only recommended for people in good physical condition.

Is Masca Gorge open? New hiking restrictions in Masca, Tenerife –  Efrén Yanes

The Masca Gorge is open on weekends and holidays, and capacity has been limited to 25 people every half hour from 8:30 am to 11:00 am in summer (8:30 am to 10:30 am in winter). Due to these restrictions, you’ll have to request a free trail ticket on this website . Keep in mind that visitors must arrive at the designated checkpoint (Masca Visitor Center or Masca pier) 30 minutes before their booked time, or else their ticket will be deemed invalid.

At the checkpoint, the trail staff will verify your ticket, provide a helmet, and check that you’re wearing suitable hiking shoes and clothing and that you have enough water. Along the Masca hiking trail , you’ll pass two more checkpoints, where you’ll undergo a similar process.

Also, remember that you must begin the ascent up the ravine no later than 2:00 pm since the area closes at 6:00 pm and the hike could take up to 4 hours.

Guided hiking tour in Masca Valley, Tenerife

One of the best ways to see the Masca Gorge is by doing a guided hiking tour. Moreover, this is the most practical option for most people since you won’t have to reserve a ticket or worry about parking, which is something I’ll talk about later.

If you’re interested in a hiking excursion through Masca valley , I recommend this tour . It starts at Santiago del Teide and goes to Caserío de Masca , where you’ll get beautiful views of the mountains and ravines that make up this corner of Tenerife.

After stopping at the Visitor Center, the hike through the gorge begins. Your guide will tell you all about the different plant species that grow in Masca, Tenerife , as well as the birds and animals that live there. Since the pier is currently closed, you’ll hike down the ravine, stop at Masca Beach, and then hike back up.

Not only is this one of the best tours in Tenerife , but it’s also one of the easiest ways to experience the Barranco de Masca trail. The tour price includes your hiking ticket, transportation, water, and energy bars.

• Starting point : Santiago del Teide

Hike down the Masca Gorge on your own

While booking the guided tour is the easiest option, you can also do the Masca hike on your own. Of course, until the pier opens back up, you’ll have to do both the descent and ascent on foot. So that is why I only recommend this for a 7-day trip to Tenerife . If you have only 5 days to explore Tenerife , I recommend taking in the views from El Caserio and skipping the hike.

Masca Gorge hike registration and ticket request

Before you can access the ravine, you must register online and request a free ticket through this link .

Along with your ticket, you must bring a valid form of photo ID. Hikers must be over 8 years old, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. If the adult is not the child’s legal guardian, they must present this form with parental authorization.

Keep in mind that access to Masca valley is limited to 25 people every half hour from 8:30 am to 11:00 am in summer and from 8:30 am to 10:30 am in winter. In other words, only 150 people in summer and 125 in winter.

You can stay in the area from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm regardless of the time you entered. That said, everyone must depart from Masca Beach by 2:00 pm to begin the ascent up the ravine since the hike can take up to 4 hours.

How to get to Masca, Tenerife

You can get to Masca village in your own vehicle, but I don’t recommend this option since there are very few parking spaces. Also, the road to Masca, Tenerife is narrow and winding, so it can be dangerous if you’re not used to it.

The best way to get there is by taking bus route 355 or 365, depending on whether you depart from Santiago del Teide or from Buenavista del Norte. You can check the timetables for line 355 here and for line 365 here .

You can also arrive by taxi or on foot by following the Masca hiking trails that connect with other locations like El Palmar, Las Portelas, Teno Alto, or Baracán. However, I don’t recommend the latter option since you’ll want to save your energy for descending and ascending the ravine!

Masca Valley hike – Requirements and what to bring

To hike up and down the ravine in Masca, Tenerife , you must be in good physical shape. In addition, there are a few other requirements you should be aware of.

Once you arrive, you’ll head to the checkpoint, where they will check that you have the appropriate footwear and clothing. You’re also required to have enough water for the hike, a cellphone with sufficient battery, and proper ID documents. If you take medication prescribed by a doctor, you should bring that, too. Visitors who don’t meet these requirements may be denied access to the gorge.

It’s also recommended that you bring sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks, and a trash bag so you don’t litter. The trail staff will loan you a helmet for the hike, which must be worn at all times.

Masca hike starting point – Caserío de Masca

The Caserío de Masca is the starting point for this Masca Gorge hike . Until the pier opens up again, it will also serve as the endpoint. Caserío de Masca is next to the Visitor Center, and this is where you must present your ID and ticket.

In addition to serving as the trailhead into the ravine, Caserío de Masca is a Site of Cultural Interest and one of the top places to visit in Masca, Tenerife . The houses here are perfectly placed along the side of the mountain, which creates a unique and pretty landscape.

Masca village is a remote hamlet where you can spend some time before or after hiking the ravine. That said, I recommend visiting the Cherfe viewpoint to see this small town from above!

Masca Gorge hike

The hike through Masca Gorge is one of the most popular hikes in Spain . However, it’s a difficult hike that’s not recommended for people who aren’t in good physical shape. Moreover, the pier at Masca Beach is currently closed, so you must do the ascent on foot. The descent is of medium difficulty, while the ascent is very challenging.

All the effort is worthwhile because you get to hike in an impressive ravine with unique geological formations. Also, there are plant and animal species that only live in Masca, Tenerife , so if you’re in good shape, I highly recommend doing this hike.

• Time : 3 hours for the descent and up to 4 hours for the ascent
• Distance : 3.1 miles one-way (6.2 miles round-trip)
• Elevation : 2,460 ft
• Difficulty : Medium for the descent and high for the ascent
• Best time to do it : Spring and autumn
• Points of interest : Masca village, Masca Beach, rock formations, flora, and fauna

Boat ride from the beach in Masca, Tenerife to Los Gigantes

In the past, most travelers descended the Masca valley on foot and took a boat from Masca Beach to Los Gigantes to avoid the challenging ascent. That’s what we did when we traveled to Masca, Tenerife . Unfortunately, the boat option isn’t available right now, so you must complete the entire route on foot.

There are plans to reopen the pier soon, so when that time comes, you can check here to see which tour companies make the Masca-Los Gigantes trip. In this case, you’ll just have to present your boat ticket at the Visitor Center when you start your hike.

Where to stay in Masca, Tenerife

If you’re looking for hotels in Masca, Tenerife , I recommend Sweet Home Masca . Located in Masca village among the mountains, it’s the perfect accommodation if you want tranquility. Plus, it’s less than 2 miles from the ravine.

Where to eat in Masca, Tenerife

My top recommendation is to bring your own food with you when you do the Masca hike . Even so, there are some nearby restaurants that you can visit before starting your route.

One of those spots is the El Guanche restaurant , one of the best restaurants in Tenerife , which is a good value for the money. It specializes in Canarian cuisine and has vegetarian dishes. Two other options are the Chez Arlette restaurant , which serves a varied menu, or the Blanky restaurant , Casa Fidel , where they make delicious empanadas.

This sun-kissed island, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands , isn’t just about beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife; it’s a hiker’s paradise with a surprising variety of trails .

From the rugged, lunar landscapes of Teide National Park to the lush greenery of Anaga Rural Park , Tenerife offers a plethora of paths for every level of hiker.

Whether you’re looking to conquer challenging peaks, wander through ancient forests, or just enjoy leisurely walks with stunning ocean views, Tenerife has it all.

In this post, I’m going to share with you the cream of the crop – the best hikes that you absolutely must try on this diverse and enchanting island. So lace up your hiking boots, grab your water bottle, and let’s embark on a journey to discover the top hiking trails that make Tenerife a true hiker’s haven. Let’s get started!

Oh and PS: We did all of these hikes together with our little adventurer César while he was in his baby carrier. Who says adventurous travel stops after having a baby???

The 7 very best hiking trails in Tenerife

1. roques de garcia trail – lunar landscape in teide national park.

Hiking distance – 3.5km

Elevation – 175m

Route Type – Loop

Duration – 1.5 hour

Level – Easy. A big part of the trail is paved and accessible to prams and wheelchairs. Halfway through the terrain becomes rockier and is only suitable when wearing proper hiking boots

Parking Lot – There’s a pretty spacious parking lot at the start of the trail.

Best time to visit – In my dream scenario we would have completed this hike during sunset. The crowds have faded away and the light up in Teide National Park is spectacular. But since we were hiking with our 3 month old baby we arrived at around 10am.

This relatively easy and accessible trail, located in the heart of Teide National Park , offers some of the most iconic views of Tenerife, including the famous Roque Cinchado and the imposing Mount Teide .

The looped trail is approximately 3.5 kilometers long and takes around an hour and a half to complete, making it a great option for families and those looking for a less strenuous hike.

As you meander through the path, you’ll be treated to a stunning array of geological formations, contrasting landscapes, and unique flora that thrive in this otherworldly environment. The trail is well-marked and offers various vantage points for capturing the perfect photo of the park’s rugged beauty .

Remember to wear comfortable shoes, carry water, and layer up, as the weather can change rapidly at this altitude. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely walk with incredible views, the Roques de Garcia trail is a Tenerife hiking highlight not to be missed.

2. Santiago del Teide to Masca – One of the most beautiful hikes in Tenerife

Hiking Distance – 9.5km

Elevation – 350m

Route Type – Point to point

Duration – 3.5 hours (with a small detour to Risco Verde included)

Level – Moderate. The trail starts with a steady inclination. Once you’ve reached the top it only goes downwards until you reach the Masca Valley.

Parking Lot – Park your car on Av. de la Iglesia next to Merendero Santiago del Teide. That way you’re pretty close to the start of the hiking trail.

Best time to visit – I recommend starting your hike in the morning. The Teno mountains are often covered in clouds and in the morning there’s less chance of high coverage and rain.

Despite what AllTrails says I really don’t recommend completing this hike as a loop. After reaching Masca the trail indicator tells you to follow the road back to Santiago del Teide. But this is a main road that winds through the Teno mountains with cars passing by the entire time. So very dangerous if you ask me.

It’s best to take bus 355 from Masca to Santiago del Teide. It doesn’t run that frequently so it’s best to check their timetable from before .

The first part of the trail is actually pretty boring. But I promise you, once you’ve reached the first top, the views only get better!

Make sure to make a quick detour to Risco Verde , from where you’ll have an incredible panoramic view over the Teno mountains.

Spanning approximately 10 kilometers, the trail takes you through a variety of terrains, from rocky paths to lush valleys, showcasing the diverse natural beauty of the island. As you trek, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the rugged Teno mountains and the deep gorges that carve through them.

The path descends into the Masca Gorge, revealing breathtaking scenery and the opportunity to explore the village of Masca, known for its traditional Canarian architecture and stunning mountain setting.

3. Roque de Taborno Hike – A stunning hike in Anaga Rural Park

Hiking distance – 3.9km

Elevation – 220m

Level – Easy

Parking Lot – You’ll have to park your car in the small town of Taborno. There’s very little parking space so make sure to arrive on time.

Best time to visit – Early in the morning, otherwise it will be absolute mayhem to find a parking spot.

Known as the ‘ Matterhorn of Tenerife ‘, Roque de Taborno is a striking rock formation located in the Anaga Rural Park , a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its ancient laurel forests and rugged terrain.

The hike to Roque de Taborno offers a moderate challenge, suitable for hikers with some experience. It weaves through the lush greenery of the Anaga mountains, providing hikers with stunning views of the rugged coastline and the deep blue Atlantic Ocean.

As you reach the summit, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking panorama that encompasses the vast ocean, neighboring islands, and the unique landscapes of the park.

The trail is well-marked, but it’s essential to wear good hiking boots as the path can be rocky and steep in places. Also, remember to bring water, snacks, and sun protection, as the trail offers limited shade.

4. Punta del Hidalgo – Chinamada hike

Hiking distance – 9km

Elevation – 607m

Route Type – Out & Back

Level – Moderate to hard. The hike up to Chinamada is pretty steep but the views along the way make it an absolute dream come true. I recommend bringing hiking poles for this particular hike.

Parking Lot – Park your car at Punta del Hidalgo. There isn’t that much parking space so make sure to start your hike in the early morning.

Best time to visit – I recommend starting in the morning. Almost the entire trail is exposed and due to the level of elevation it can get pretty hot and sweaty during the day.

The Punta de Hidalgo to Chinamada hike in Tenerife is a hidden gem for those who love coastal trails with a mix of cultural insights . This moderately challenging hike starts in the small, picturesque coastal village of Punta de Hidalgo, located in the northeastern part of the island.

As you ascend, the path offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. One of the highlights of this hike is the opportunity to explore Chinamada, a unique hamlet where inhabitants still live in traditional cave houses carved into the mountainside .

It’s essential to wear sturdy hiking boots, as the terrain can be uneven, and to carry plenty of water and snacks. The trail can also be quite exposed to the sun, so sun protection is a must.

Don’t bother hiking to Mirador Aguaide cause it is closed.

5. Path of the Senses – An easy hike in Tenerife

Hiking distance – 1.4km

Elevation – 79m

Duration – 30 minutes

Parking Lot – You’ll have to park your car at Cruz del Carmen. It’s one of the busiest trails in Anaga Rural Park so if you arrive a bit later in the day you might have to circle around a bit to find a decent spot.

Best time to visit – We visited in the afternoon and had a lovely experience.

The Path of the Senses, or ‘Sendero de los Sentidos’, in Tenerife is a unique and enchanting hiking experience that truly lives up to its name.

Located in the lush Anaga Rural Park, this trail is designed to engage all your senses as you explore the beauty of the laurel forest, a relic of the Tertiary period.

The path is split into three routes of varying lengths, with the shortest being just 340 meters, making it accessible to hikers of all abilities, including those with limited mobility.

As you walk, you’re invited to touch the diverse textures of the forest, listen to the symphony of bird songs and rustling leaves, smell the fresh, earthy scents of the vegetation, and feast your eyes on the verdant greenery and occasional glimpses of the ocean in the distance.

Informative panels along the route provide insights into the local flora and fauna, enhancing the educational aspect of the hike.

6. La Rambla de Castro

Hiking distance – 4km

Elevation – 457m

Duration – 2 hours

Route Type – Out & back

Level – Moderate

Parking Lot – You can park your car near Restaurante Cafetería Mirador San Pedro.

Best time to visit – We visited halfway through the morning and after our walk we had lunch at Restaurante Cafetería Mirador San Pedro. I tried their grilled octopus and Christof the meat croquettes and both meals were delicious.

This relatively easy trail, located in the north of the island near the town of Los Realejos , offers a leisurely walk through one of the most historically rich and ecologically diverse areas of Tenerife.

The hike is about 4 kilometers long and takes roughly two hours to complete, meandering through banana plantations, rustic bridges, and alongside cliffs offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Along the way, you’ll encounter charming historical landmarks, including the 18th-century Hacienda de Castro and the Fortín de San Fernando, a small fortification that once guarded the coast from pirates.

The path also leads to the beautiful Playa de los Roques, a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the sea breeze. The trail is well-marked and suitable for all ages, making it a great option for a family outing.

7. El Draguillo Trail from Benijo

Hiking Distance – 10.9km

Elevation – 961m

Duration – 6 hours

Level – Moderate to hard

Parking Lot – You can park your car in Benijo. Make sure to arrive early in the day cause there’s not a lot of parking space. Especially on the weekend this area can be incredibly crowded.

Best time to visit – Best to start your hike as early as possible.

Hiking El Draguillo in Tenerife is an adventure that takes you off the beaten path, offering a peaceful escape into the island’s rugged and lesser-known landscapes.

Located in the Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the northeastern part of Tenerife, this trail is a hidden treasure.

As you traverse the trail, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the dramatic coastline, the deep blue ocean, and the quaint remote villages that dot the landscape.

We were only able to complete part of the hike since a part of the trail got washed away due to heavy rainfall.

The best time to hike in Tenerife

When it comes to picking the best time to hit the trails in Tenerife, you’re in luck – this island is a year-round hiker’s dream!

However, if we’re talking about the absolute prime time for hiking , it’s generally considered to be from late spring to late fall , roughly October until April.

During these months, you’ll find the weather pleasantly warm, but not too hot, making it ideal for those long, scenic hikes. The skies are usually clear, offering unobstructed views of Tenerife’s stunning landscapes.

Winter in the Canary Islands, from November to March, offers its own charm, especially in the lower altitude areas where the temperatures are milder and the trails less crowded. So, whether you’re looking for lush green paths or wanting to explore the volcanic terrain under the warm summer sun, Tenerife’s diverse trails are welcoming almost all year round.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to always be prepared before you embark on any hiking trail . Familiarize yourself with the trail you plan to hike, including its difficulty level, distance, and elevation gain. Make sure to pack appropriate gear such as sturdy hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, layers for changing weather conditions, a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water .

Always check the weather forecast before you head out . Tenerife’s weather can be quite variable, especially in higher altitudes like Teide National Park. Dressing in layers is key, as temperatures can fluctuate dramatically.

Next, sturdy hiking boots are a must – the terrain here ranges from sandy paths to rocky trails, so proper footwear is crucial for comfort and safety.

I decided to base ourselves in two different places. One perfect to explore the region of Anaga Rural Park and the other to discover the rest of the island.

Where to stay when exploring Anaga Rural Park

When visiting Anaga Rural Park we choose to stay 3 nights in San Cristobal La Laguna . This way we were close to the entrance and most of the hikes. Especially when you’re traveling with a young baby you try to limit your travel time.

La Laguna Gran Hotel

La Laguna Gran Hotel provides express check-in and check-out, non-smoking rooms, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, free WiFi and a garden.

Where to stay when exploring Teide NP and Teno Mountains

I can’t recommend The Ritz Carlton Abama enough but staying here is what made our trip absolutely unforgettable. It’s only a short drive away from most hiking trails and you won’t have to deal with the daily traffic jams in the south of Tenerife.

We stayed at their Villa Club Deluxe which comes with a semi private heated pool, exclusive access to El Mirador for breakfast and includes complimentary drinks and snacks by the pool.

All in all it was the perfect hotel to stay in Tenerife with our baby.

Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 : Casablanca

Arrive in Casablanca in the evening.

Day 2 : Casablanca

City orientation tour includes Habous Quarters, the Royal Palace Gate, the Corniche and a visit to the Hassan II mosque - the second largest mosque in the world.

Day 3 : Casablanca - Marrakesh - Casablanca

Proceed to Marrakesh. Visit the Bahia Palace from inside, the Koutobia Minaret, the Menara Garden and the lively Djemaa El Fna square. Walk through the Medina with its many Souks, Cafes and enjoy shopping. Arrive in Casablanca.

Day 4 : Casablanca - Rabat - Tangier

Proceed to Rabat - capital of Morocco. The panoramic city tour includes a photo stop at Royal Palace, Royal Mosque, Mohamed Mausoleum and Hussan Tower. Arrive in Tangier. On arrival walk through the Medina, Kasbah and the Socco Market of Tangier and view the Cap Spartal where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean Sea.

Day 5 : Tangier - Algeciras - Seville

Take a ferry from Tangier to Algeciras, a port city in the south of Spain and the largest urban area on the Bay of Gibraltar. It is the busiest port in Spain. Arrive in Seville in the evening.

Day 6 : Seville

Visit the massive cathedral with the Tomb of Christopher Columbus, Moorish Giralda Tower, Santa Cruz Quarter with flower decked balconies, a photo stop at The Alcazar - 12th century Moorish Royal Palace and the Ultramodern expo site - a small scale model of "Victoria" the first vessel to circumnavigate the globe. Enjoy the Flamenco Show with dinner.

Day 7 : Seville - Lisbon

Proceed to Lisbon. Arrive in Lisbon - capital of Portugal. It is also known as "the town of the seven hills". City orientation tour includes Monument to the discoveries, Belem Tower, Jeronimo's Monastery with the Tomb of Vasco-da-Gama, Alfama Quarter and Castelo de Sao Jorge (St. George's Castle), Baixa.

Day 8 : Lisbon

Visit Sintra National Palace also known as Town Palace, designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Day 9 : Lisbon - Salamanca

Proceed to Salamanca. En-route visit Shrine of Fatima - important Centre of faith in the Catholic world which includes Basilica of our Lady, House of Lucia and the Parish Church. On arrival in Salamanca orientation tour includes the Plaza Mayor.

Day 10 : Salamanca - Avila - Madrid

Proceed to Madrid. En-route visit Avila, the ancient city that has been declared a national landmark. The City Wall is Avila's most emblematic and spectacular monument. Arrive in Madrid - the capital of Spain. Visit Prado Museum, a museum and art gallery located in Madrid. It features one of the world's finest collections of European art.

Day 11 : Madrid

City orientation tour includes the Plaza de Espana, Sabatini Garden, Cervantes Statue, Cibeles fountain, Parliament, Puerto del sol followed by visit to Royal Palace from inside.

Day 12 : Madrid - Barcelona

Arrival in Barcelona in the evening through Castilian plains of Aragon and Morata Pass.

Day 13 : Barcelona

City orientation tour includes Theatre Platz, visit to the Gaudi's Sagrada Familia Cathedral, the Olympic Stadium, Colourful La Ramblas, Statue of Christopher Columbus, Tibidabo Hill and a Cable Car Ride. Free time at the waterfront area to roam around and to enjoy souvenir shopping.
