Puerto Rico is home to one of the three largest underground cave systems in the world.

For cave lovers, hikers and adventurers, visiting the caves in Puerto Rico should be on your itinerary.

I’ve lived in Puerto Rico for 14 years and explored many of the island’s caves. They never fail to disappoint.

In this article, I will cover the 12 most exciting caves in Puerto Rico:

1. Cueva del Indio

Cueva del Indio is a spectacular oceanfront cave that carries hundreds of years of Taino history.

Exploring the cave is free, but you’ll need to pay a fee to use the private entrance.

This cave is located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. You can get there by taking a rental car. You can park on the street and walk along the shore to the cave.

2. Cañon de Tanam á

Cañon de Tanamá has millions of years of history, with flowing waters carving the caverns, canyons, and tunnels over time.

Several tour companies offer a tour of this canyon with activities like cave tubing, rappelling, rock climbing, and more.

3. Cueva Arenales

Cueva Arenales is one of the most popular caves in Puerto Rico.

It has a swimming hole, “Charco Azul,” for swimming through the caves.

This cave is located in Vega Baja. You can get there by taking a rental car.

You can book a tour with Naturhabitat Ecotours to visit this cave, but you can also explore independently. 

4. Cuevas de Rio Camuy

The Rio Camuy cave is the world’s third-largest underground river. It has over 16 bat species, natural forms of stalagmites, and sinkholes as well!

This cave offers guided tours, but reservations are not needed. Be sure to call ahead for opening hours.

5. Cueva Las Golondrinas

Cueva Las Golondrinas is an easy hiking route with a beach waiting for you at the end! It’s perfect for bird observation.

There is no tour offered for this cave. You will need to park on the road and walk a 14-minute hike to get there.

6. Cueva del Viento

Cueva del Viento (The Wind Cave) offers beautiful stalactites and stalagmites with each step you take.

This cave is located inside the Guajataca State Forest in Isabela .

You can get there in a rental car.

7. Cueva del Arco

Cueva del Arco is a natural cascade bridge eroded through the karst by the Tanama River.

8. Cuevas del Convento

At Cuevas del Convento , you will learn all about the jewels of the southern region karst zone of Puerto Rico and home to one of the largest bat populations on the island. You do not need to book a tour to visit this cave.

9. Desecheo Caves

Desecheo Caves is an extraordinary cave because it’s a cave located below sea level.

The trek to the uninhabited Desecheo Island is an adventure in itself.

You will need to book a private tour to explore this cave, and most companies are based out of Rincon . You can book a tour with Taino Diver .

10. Las Cabachuelas

Las Cabachuelas is home to over 60 caves in Puerto Rico alone. It hosts a variety of wildlife and petroglyphs to explore. 

You can hike here freely, but this is not recommended for first-time visitors.

11. Cuevas de la Mora

Cuevas de la Mora is a series of caves with 25 diverse petroglyphs to explore inside.

You do not need to book a tour to visit this cave.

Angeles Cave is home to the third-largest underground river in the world.

It also features an incomparable tropical ecosystem that conserves the cave from millions of years ago.

The Camuy River Cave Park is a world-class natural treasure, the third-largest cave network in the world, carved over a million years ago .   Formally named Parque Nacional de las Cavernas de Camuy,  is certainly the most impressive cave system on the island of Puerto Rico.

Although impressive, visitors will be surprised to learn they’re only exploring the major cave and two sinkholes, Camuy River Cave has 220 subterranean caves stretching over 286 acres.  It is believed that there are more caves to be discovered yet. Underground runs the   Rio Camuy, a nine-mile river , the third-largest underground river in the world, the two largest underground rivers are in Yugoslavia and Papua New Guinea.  Camuy River Cave Park is a very family-friendly attraction, average physical condition is required to explore the cave.  There are cement walkways throughout the tour, making it the most accessible for most travelers.  Children and adults will be amazed by the impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and the impressive sinkhole.  The caves expand to three towns, Camuy (entrance to the park), Lares, and Hatillo.

Visiting Tips:   The cement walkways may be a bit slippery in some spots, non-slip shoes are recommended.  Reservations are recommended but tickets may be purchased the day of visiting, just give yourself a good 2 hours to get there in case of traffic and get there in the morning to be sure you get a ticket for one of the tours.  If you don’t have your scheduled tour until the afternoon, there are more places to visit nearby.  You may book this tour , which takes care of all the details.

Cueva Ventana – Arecibo, Puerto Rico

Temporarily Closed – Prepare to be wowed at the window… Photos are a disservice to Cueva Ventana , the scene you encounter at the window after hiking through the forest and passing through the dark cave is truly rewarding.  The tour guides are bilingual and very friendly.  The best and top-rated tours include Cueva del Indio, one of the most scenic places on the north coast of Puerto Rico.

Family-friendly, good for children.  Hiking shoes are recommended, hiking level is about a 2.

Cueva Golondrinas at Playa El Pastillo

Location of Cueva Golondrinas : Isabela, Puerto Rico ⎮ Distance from San Juan:   1 hr 45 min (avoid traffic)⎮ Distance from Aguadilla Airport : 30 minutes

Time to visit the beach cave:  Late summer months, best in August.

We love the beaches of Isabela , and we honestly don’t like to share this beach much because we often go early morning during the summertime and we typically have it to ourselves, other times we may encounter a few locals fishing offshore and guests that come down from the amazing resort Royal Isabela.  Playa El Pastillo is at its best during the summer months, the tide is lower, the water is calmer, you can do a little snorkeling at the east end, float at tidal pools, and… the greatest reward is seeing Cueva Las Golondrinas, named after the swallow birds that nest on the cave which is officially a grotto.  We wait for the raging Atlantic waves to retreat after the winter months and reveal the cave once again.  If you wish to surprise your loved one with something special, get a picnic basket together, sit down really close and simply enjoy the views and sounds of the ocean together from the cave, you won’t forget the experience.

Cueva de Las Golondrinas Beach

Location of Cueva de Las Golondrinas : Manati, Puerto Rico ⎮ Distance from San Juan: 45 minutes

Best time to visit this beach cave:   Summer Months

Photos simply don’t do justice to this dreamy spot, a small beach in a protected cove where crystal clear water runs in from the more open water of the Manati coastline facing the Atlantic.  During the summer months, the water is calmer and extra clear.  The active and strong ocean waves of the winter months that come in through the entrances become calmer during the summer months, allowing beachgoers to enter and explore.  Right outside you’ll be able to sit down on shallow water, once inside you’ll find gorgeous turquoise and emerald green water filling the cave’s uneven surface creating a series of natural pools of depths from 3 to 5 – 6 feet.

Please wear water shoes, the surface may be slippery.  Most of all, please be considerate of the beautiful sea life that calls this cave home, from sea urchins to schools of fish and coral, they’re living organisms that deserve our care and respect.  Please be mindful when stepping and walking around the cave.

• A visit to this beach cave is complete with two other great beaches in Manati.  Be sure to visit Mar Chiquita, one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico.  Before or after your hike to Cueva de Las Golondrinas, you’ll be passing Poza de Las Mujeres, also gorgeous and best to visit during the summer months.

Beautiful Pit Caves in Puerto Rico

A pit cave is a vertical cave, rather than horizontal passage or entrance, also called a pot in the UK.  The erosion from the crashing waves of the ocean create this cave, as you stand admiring it, is is literally a continuously changing work of art.

Pozo de Jacinto

Pozo de Jacinto is a pit cave about 30 feet deep, formed by the crashing waves of the Atlantic, located along the northwest coast of Puerto Rico in the town of Isabela.  With so many scenic spots along the coast of Puerto Rico, this pit cave is often missed by visitors, but in islands such as Aruba, a natural bridge that resembles Pozo de Jacinto is actually one of the top attractions.  If you enjoy rock formations, natural bridges, caves, and the ocean, Pozo de Jacinto is certainly worth a visit, and it doesn’t take up much time to admire it due to the easy access.

A perfect day trip to Pozo de Jacinto is planning a beach-hopping day to the beaches of Isabela.  From Jobos Beach, you will take the trail from the parking lot and within a few minutes you’ll be at Pozo de Jacinto, you’ll also enjoy sweeping views of the coastline.

Safety Warmings

• Although we’ve personally seen teens jumping off during the summer days when the water is calmer,  it is NOT RECOMMENDED NOR SAFE to jump in the water.  This pit cave is a great place to visually admire it and enjoy the surrounding sights.
• There are no lifeguards, guards, or guardrails around the pit, so please walk with care and never leave your children unattended and never stand along the edge, please keep a safe distance.

You’ll also find interesting caves in Cabo Rojo, with famous stories from Pirata Cofresi, the real pirate of the Caribbean.  The island of Isla de Mona , Monito and Caja de Muertos also has some impressive caves.  Following are more caves worth visiting.

In 2012, one of the largest cave systems in Puerto Rico was declared a nature reserve, located between the municipalities of Morovis and Ciales.  This site is of great importance with both natural and cultural importance to Puerto Rico.  Roberto Martinez and Ovidio Davila were responsible for the study of this cave system and for designating it as a nature reserve.  We do not recommend you visit on your own, Proyecto Cabachuelas in Morovis offers regular guided tours (see details below).

Location of Cueva del Viento: Isabela, Puerto Rico   ⎮ Distance from Aguadilla Airport :   50 minutes

We love hiking in Isabela, one of the unbeaten paths of Puerto Rico, where you’ll be immersed in nature with few to zero crowds.  Put on hiking boots and head to the Guajataca State Forest, offering well-marked trails, one leading to Cueva del Viento.  The trails leading to the cave are nice with interesting flora and fauna to observe along the way.  The cave is very accessible, you simply go down wooden steps to explore this beautiful cave that surprisingly gets few visitors, those of us that love it, would like to keep it that way, it is a very peaceful adventure.  Be sure to take a flashlight or lantern, there are no lights inside the cave and no organized tours so you’re on your own.  Feel free to stop at the ranger station at Km 9, where you may park your car and head to the trails from there.  The few people we encounter during the times we’ve hiked there are locals taking a morning walk.

Location of Cueva Lucero “Star Cave”: Morovis & Ciales, PR

Cueva Lucero is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  This cave is one of the most important archeological sites in Puerto Rico, where aborigines dwelled and left hundreds of pictographs and petroglyphs.  Currently, there are no organized tours to Cueva Lucero, but locals who like to do rock climbing and spelunking are blessed to experience this historical and archeological gem.

What should i wear during a cave tour.

When exploring a cave, we recommend you wear proper shoes to protect your ankles that are non-slip.  Some caves such as Cueva Arco and Arenales require river trekking, check with tour guides for their recommendations.  You may need lights for those caves you explore on your own, tours typically include all equipment necessary.

Should you I explore on my own or book a tour?

Many locals explore caves on their own, however, they may know the area and explore in groups.  Some caves may be explored on their own, read the details on this page for each particular cave.  We strongly advise visitors/tourists including locals that don’t know the cave areas to book a tour with a knowledgable and professional guide for your safety and full enjoyment.

Cueva Ventana: A View Like No Other

4/24- Cueva Ventana reopened May 20, 2024!

We like to discover and write about little-known places to visit and things to do here in Puerto Rico. Cueva Ventana was one of those places. Back when we originally wrote about the cave, there was not a lot of information available about it. Now, it is one of the more popular sites to visit in PR and is available only by tour! The view is fantastic !

Cueva Ventana translates into Window Cave , and one look at the photo explains why they call it that.

Cueva Ventana is located in Arecibo, close to the Arecibo/Utuado border, just off of Route 10. It is amazingly easy to get to . Actually, there are 2 caves here that one can enter — and they are right next to each other.

We arrived a little before our schedule tour. You fill out the safety waiver and meet your guide/group. They offer tours in English, Spanish, and/or bi-lingual, depending on the group makeup. They give you your helmet and you follow your guide, who tells you about the area and the cave and the things (flora and fauna) you see as you walk along the path to the caves. Our guide was very good at identifying the birds by their calls. The hike/walk to the mouths of the caves is about 10-15 minutes, partly up-hill and partly in full sun — so a bottle of water for everyone is important. When you get to the first cave, you walk down into it… your guide will show you the petroglyphs and you can hear the bats.It is a large cavern inside. It is open on both ends, and it is not so long, so you can see pretty well. Then you walk up and out of there and right into Cueva Ventana. As you walk down into this cave, they will give you a flashlight. This cave is dark!

All the way, the guide talks about the nature in the cave, how caves are formed, about the bats and all sorts of other cave related info. This cave has a bunch of very pretty formations — stalagmites and stalactites. It has a number of smaller caves, tunnels and hiding spots. It also has bats! The guide will try to find other cave dwelling creatures to discuss. But the goal is the window. We kept going through — and then we saw the light at the end. What a great view! Of course, they don’t want you near the edge, the dirt/stone floor is pretty slippery!. There is such a magnificent view of the green fields and river below. You can get some great photos. And you will see the golondrinos (swallow birds) flying in and out.

Since both caves are open on both ends, they were the warmest and windiest caves I have ever been in. And they didn’t smell bad either (considering the number of bats living there)! I found this to be an easy place to go and see caves.

Stuff You Need to Know

I think this adventure requires a moderate fitness level, due to the walk up and the slippery footings in the cave. The ground was dirt and relatively flat, but getting down into the caves was a bit tricky- you need to climb down slippery rocks. Wear closed toe shoes if possible. The owners also say it is for children 3 years and up, but I might wait until the kids are at least 5-6 years old. You are required to sign a liability release form. There is a snack bar.

The cave is open from 9am – 5:00pm (last tour is at 4pm) 7 days a week. You really should make reservation for tours – book online. Cueva Ventana booking . They may be able to fit you in on the next available tour if you don’t have appointment…be prepared to wait. Tours last 1.5 hrs.

They may offer tours that include transportation from San Juan and Condado area hotels, for an extra fee. Call them (number below) for more info or to make those arrangements.

You really should make reservation for tours – book online. Cueva Ventana booking . Admission to the cave is $29 per person plus tax and it includes a guided tour, use of a flashlight and helmet. Check their web page for rates, they have family prices, locals only prices etc. Parking for the cave is free (go up the driveway to the left of the registration table). There are clean port-a-potties in the parking lot and bathrooms available on path. No children under 3 years old.

From the San Juan area, take Route 22 West to Route 10 South (exit 75B). Take Route 10 to KM 75 (or km 58.7). There is a Puma gas station on the east side of the road. The office is right in that area. Nice and easy to find!

Travel time from Rio Grande on a Sunday morning was about 1½ hours.

Thirty-five percent of Puerto Rico’s topography is made up of limestone rock that was once a part of the ocean floor. This undulating terrain is still the least impacted by human development, less so than our mountainous interior (coffee) and coastal plains (sugarcane). 

The interaction of plate tectonics, volcanos, and trade winds provided newly formed rivers that would eventually find their way to the sea. Thus a vast network of caves and caverns was carved out eons ago in this region. Explore Window Cave and Indian Cave. Both are of moderate difficulty to climb; young children may find this difficult.

First, we guide you on an eco-walk/climb through caverns and caves as you learn how these natural structures first came about. Then, you have a chance to walk onto various rock formations surrounding the beautiful Puerto Rican coastline. Although direct interactions with the petroglyphs are not available, the scenery is simply spectacular. You have some of the best vistas on the entire island and can take in the beauty of the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

W hile there’s no official count, it’s estimated that there are around 2,000 caves in Puerto Rico – quite a lot for one island. However, just a small fraction of them – around 415 – have been explored. Fortunately, several are open to the public and provide adventure opportunities, including spelunking, rock climbing, swimming, rappelling, and rafting. Some are fairly accessible and welcoming to visitors of all ages, while others require special skills or equipment.

Río Camuy Caves

As the largest system of caves in Puerto Rico and the third-largest in the world, Río Camuy Caves is a top attraction for locals and visitors. Vast parts of this system are still unexplored, but to date, 220 caves and 10 miles of caverns have been identified. (A cavern has multiple openings while a cave has just one).

Río Camuy Cave Park is in the northwest region of Puerto Rico, about an hour and a half outside of Puerto Rico’s capital city, San Juan. Tours are offered daily and ideal for most ages and fitness levels since the paths into and through the caves are paved. Visitors can choose from an audio tour or a live guide, both of which provide information on the history and geology of the area.

A tour begins with a downhill walk to the cave’s entrance, then heads inside where hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites come into sight, some as wide as thirty feet. After weaving through the caverns for a while, visitors will see sunlight in the distance; a prelude to the enormous opening soon to appear in the limestone walls. Looking through it from within the cave is beautiful, offering a peek of the jungle’s bright green ferns and chirping birds. After enjoying the picturesque scene, tours retrace their steps back to the cave entrance to make the short return walk uphill.

Cañon de Tanamá

Travelers keen on a slightly more active adventure should visit Cañon de Tanamá, a network of canyons, caverns, and tunnels carved by the ancient Tanamá River. A highlight of this network of caves in Puerto Rico is a 1,000-foot-long tunnel formed by the river over thousands of years and takes up to thirty minutes to float on a rubber tube. Other caves feature giant stalactites and stalagmites along with cave-dwelling wildlife like tiny bats, interesting insects, and endemic tropical frogs,

Most visitors to Cañon de Tanamá begin in Utuado, a small town in the mountainous region of Puerto Rico, about one and a half hours from San Juan. The most popular way to explore this natural wonder is on a half-day tour with companies like Tanamá River Adventures or Explora PR . ON tours, travelers start with a short hike through the forest before traversing through caves, canyons, and waterfalls. Most tours end with tubing, body rafting, or rappelling along the river; adrenaline junkies will want to book a tour that includes the chance to jump from cliffs into the cool waters below. Since this experience includes hiking, climbing, and swimming, it’s best suited for those of average fitness and health.

Cueva del Indio

Cueva del Indio is not only a geological wonder and an important cultural site, but also a popular Hollywood filming location for blockbuster movies – the most well-known of which may be 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

On the Atlantic Coast, this cave offers views of crashing waves, a natural rock bridge, and the opportunity to see hieroglyphs carved by the indigenous people of Puerto Rico: the Taino. Because of these carvings, Cueva del Indio was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Cueva del Indio is in the town of caves, just an hour outside of San Juan. After parking, it’s a one-mile, moderately easy trail to the top of the cave. You’ll need to climb down into the cave to see the petroglyphs and there’s no longer a ladder — likely to reduce foot traffic into the cave. It’s not recommended, but it is possible to enter the cave through a small gap if you have grippy footwear and long pants. But if you decide you’d rather not climb into the cave, you’ll still enjoy the trip as the views of the dramatic rock formations and crashing waves are quite impressive.

Cueva del Viento

Cueva del Viento is a limestone cave inside Guajataca National Forest filled with fascinating stalactites and stalagmite formations. It’s also home to a sizable colony of bats, so be prepared to see and hear plenty of these flying creatures.

The cave is in the northwestern town of Isabela, about two hours from San Juan. There’s a 2.7- mile, out-and-back trail to the entrance, so come prepared with proper footwear and plenty of water. The wooden steps into the cave aren’t in great shape, so proceed cautiously. And since there’s no lighting, bringing a flashlight is advised – the light from a cell phone may not be enough. Don’t shine the light directly at the bats to avoid upsetting them. The cave is easy to visit on your own and there’s plenty of parking near the trailhead.

Cuevas Arenales

If you like the idea of swimming, not hiking, through caves in Puerto Rico, Cuevas Arenales and Charco Azul (“sand cave and blue pool”) should top your list. The actual cave is underground, but it’s surrounded by a collection of tunnels, cliffs, and slot canyons formed by water and erosion over millions of years. It’s a natural playground for adventurers and the perfect way to spend half a day.

It’s in Vega Baja, just an hour from San Juan. A visit to Cuevas Arenales will involve some hiking, rock scrambling, wading, and, ultimately, swimming. You will definitely get wet, so wear a swimsuit and dress accordingly. While it’s certainly possible to explore Cuevas Arenales on your own, a full-day guided tour is also a good option. Local guides can help navigate the cave’s dark and underground portions and point out the best places to cliff jump into the deeper pools. Cueva del Agua

Cueva del Agua is the hardest of the caves in Puerto Rico to reach as it’s on Mona Island — a nature reserve off Puerto Rico’s western coast. There are no hotels or facilities — just a few campsites — and the boat ride to get there takes about four hours. You need a permit from the Department of Natural Resources of Puerto Rico to land on the island, so if you want to see the cave and the rest of the island’s trails and activities, you’ll need to book a tour. 4 Las Cabachuelas

3 Cueva De La Mora

Cueva De La Mora, or 'blackberry cave' in Spanish, is a cave and an archaeological site near Comerío, Puerto Rico . In 1983, the caves were registered as one of the historical places in the United States National Register of Historic Places. The cave also gives key information about the Pre-Columbian era of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

2 Cueva Del Agua
