‘Star Trek Beyond’

‘Star Trek Beyond’

Where the 2009 Star Trek is a jam-packed rousing action movie, and  Star Trek Into Darkness is a puzzle box, the third movie in the rebooted series finally sees the crew of the Enterprise acting like their TV counterparts: exploring brave new worlds, boldly going, etc. Though it went a little smaller in scale than the previous two movies, the Justin Lin directed feature is still full of delightful action scenes, and sneaky tributes to the entire history of the franchise, as this was released to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

Here's our Star Trek streaming guide, so you know where to go boldly where you've never gone before... Without leaving your sofa. We've come up with this Star Trek streaming guide because since the first ever episode aired back in 1966, there's been  a huge number of additions into the franchise.

Star Trek is currently in a bit of a purple patch for content as Paramount Plus , which is the home of all things Star Trek, is responsible for several new shows in recent years. But, it's not just new content, you'll also find where to stream the classics both movies and TV series below.

Before, Star Trek content was scattered all around different streaming services and searching for what you wanted to watch could feel like hunting for a cloaked Bird of Prey. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. However, we do have round-ups of the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Netflix , Disney Plus and Amazon if you want to check them out.

You can also check out our take on the Star Trek movies, ranked so you know which movies to beam up onto your device. While Paramount Plus has everything Star Trek out there, you can find the odd bit of content on other platforms. So, below you'll find where you can watch what, regardless of where you're based, in our Star Trek streaming guide.

The Star Trek movies can be divided into three tidy groups: the original cast, the Next Generation cast, and the reboot cast. All of them can be found on Paramount+. However, Paramount+ isn't the only place you can stream the movies and in some cases you can rent or buy from places such as Amazon .

Here’s how to stream the Star Trek movies in the U.S., in order of release:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ , Spectrum Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+   Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Beyond — Paramount+ , DIRECTV , Freevee

When it comes to Star Trek on the small screen, you can find them all in one place. Paramount+ not only has every episode of every legacy Trek show, it’s also the home of all the new Star Trek programming, such as Picard and Strange New Worlds. If you’re a Trekkie, you absolutely want to have Paramount+ to keep up with the object of your affection. A word of warning though, other streaming platforms may only have select episodes or series to stream.

Now that Paramount+ has arrived in the U.K, streaming Star Trek is a lot easier. You can view most of the movies on the streaming platform. Star Trek Beyond is the exception but that can be found on Amazon Prime. If you're not prepared to subscribe to Paramount+, the movies are available to rent or buy from a number of different platforms.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+ Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Beyond — Amazon Prime

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Picard, Ryker, and Troi

Now that Paramount+ has reached those across the pond, the U.K. can enjoy streaming Star Trek shows as well. Netflix is also another great option to fulfil your Trekkie viewing needs, especially if you're interested in checking out Star Trek: The Animated Series, which is exclusive to Netflix.

However, for the likes of Picard and Lower Decks, you’ll have to hop on over to Amazon Prime. It's worth noting that platforms such as SkyGo may only have a select number of episodes or series to stream.

Star Trek Beyond: EW review

If you’re looking for a witty workplace sitcom set on a futuristic starship, the latest exploits featuring the crew of the Enterprise, Star Trek Beyond , won’t disappoint. But it has to be asked: Is that really why most of us go to see a Star Trek film? The third installment since J.J. Abrams seamlessly rebooted the beloved sci-fi franchise seven years ago, Beyond is more fun than deep. It’s lightweight, zero-gravity Trek that is, for the most part, devoid of the sort of Big Ideas and knotty existential questions that creator Gene Roddenberry specialized in. You could argue that the philosophical, political, and sociological subtext is what always set his universe (and its big- and small-screen iterations) apart from other tech-heavy space adventures. Maybe that’s why Beyond feels slightly insubstantial.

Say what you want about Abrams, who directed the last two Trek movies, but he’s always been Hollywood’s savviest and most attuned makeover artist. Whether he was spit-polishing the Mission: Impossible saga in M:I III or course-correcting Star Wars with the what’s-old-is-new The Force Awakens , he’s always had an intuitive grasp of the hearts and minds of diehard fanboys and girls. He knows what they want and gives it to them. Abrams is just a producer this time around. The directorial reins have been passed to Justin Lin, a giddy, rock’em, sock’em daredevil best known for helming the best of the Fast & Furious films. And maybe that’s the problem. He’s a maestro of visceral thrills and giddy superficiality, but that’s always been a secondary or tertiary concern with Trek . It also might not have helped that Beyond ‘s script was co-written by Simon Pegg — an unassailably zealous Trek disciple who moonlights on-screen playing engineer Scotty, but whose behind-the-scenes credits skew towards the comedic. In Beyond , Lin brings his action chops and Pegg the back-of-the-classroom humor, but what’s missing is something that’s harder to manufacture: soul.

As the new film kicks off, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk is on a diplomatic mission with a hostile council of pint-sized aliens that goes awry in slapstick fashion. And even though Pine has gotten better and better at capturing William Shatner’s tongue-in-cheek Shatnerness with each outing, it’s an ominously shaky start. It plays more like a lost scene from Galaxy Quest than Trek . When he returns to the Enterprise, Kirk explains through voiceover that after a long haul in deep space, he and the rest of the crew are mired in a bit of a funk. The aimlessness of their five-year mission has resulted in a sort of spiritual drift, a malaise. Crewmembers with too much time on their hands have been swept up into workplace romances, spats, and a general loss of purpose. What they desperately need is an assignment with stakes.

And shortly after docking at a glitzy new Federation starbase, they get one. A female alien, who sent an urgent distress call reporting that her ship’s crew had been attacked and taken hostage by a hostile warrior race led by a barking, belligerent figure named Krall, needs their assistance. Since the baddie is played by Idris Elba (virtually unrecognizable at first beneath heaps of reptilian latex and putty), our hopes are raised. It’s up to Kirk and Co. to take him down. As the familiar faces saddle up (Pine’s Kirk, Zachary Quinto’s Spock, Zoe Saldana’s Uhura, Pegg’s Scotty, John Cho’s Sulu, Karl Urban’s Bones, and the late Anton Yelchin’s Chekov), the Enterprise navigates through an awe-less nebula and squares off against Krall, who’s after some mysterious alien weapon of mass destruction that might as well just be called “The MacGuffin” or “The Whatzit.”

Without treading into spoiler territory, the crew of the Enterprise beam down to their new enemy’s planet and are partnered off into teams of two to all play their part in thwarting the barking, avenging Krall. But you begin to wonder, What is Krall avenging? Where’s his Khan speech? Being hip to his motivation might have helped up the stakes of the story. But it isn’t revealed until way too late in the film. Meanwhile, the “Big Ideas” found in the best chapters in the Trek canon are nowhere to be found. Instead, what we get are mini-arcs of character development: The on-again/off-again romance between Spock and Uhura; the love-hate bond between Bones and Spock; the subtle and well-handled revelation that Sulu is gay (no surprise to anyone tracking Trek news lately… but it’s still a resonant moment). These are, by far, the best moments in Beyond . After so many missions spent with the crew of the Enterprise, it’s interesting for fans to get a glimpse into their lives beyond the bridge. And even some new faces, such as Sofia Boutella’s kabuki-skinned alien she-warrior Jaylah, are well drawn and exciting additions.

Ultimately, Beyond is a movie about characters — and character. But that’s half the battle. The other half of the battle is… battle. And Lin, who has such a strong track record with vehicular mayhem, doesn’t bring his “A” game. The entire rescue mission turns out to be a bit of a bust — and kind of a silly one too, with eye-rolling, rib-nudging anachronisms that feel totally out of place in this franchise. The music of Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys turns up on the soundtrack in ways that, I suspect, will give some strict-constructionist Trekkers a cardiac infarction. And Kirk jumps on the back of an antique 20th-century motorcycle at one key moment to go all Steve McQueen in The Great Escape . (As an aside, this is the second time in the last three films when Pine’s Kirk either gets behind the wheel of a Detroit muscle car or on top of a chopper. Once, I can buy. Twice, just seems… weird. I get that maybe Pine likes going fast on cool old-school toys, but this is supposed to be the 23rd century. Maybe he needs to exercise this passion in a different, more contemporary franchise).

I don’t want to sound too nit-picky and churlish. But the Trekverse is something that really means something to people. For them, Beyond is a fine movie, it’s just not a very good Star Trek movie. After all, as summer releases have gotten more and more and sensational and trivial, the Trek franchise could always be counted on to serve up some smarts along with its sci-fi action beats. With Beyond , it feels like just another summer tentpole with not enough going on underneath the tent. C+

In addition, Hulu presents the original documentary “Dumb: The Story of Big Brother Magazine,” about the rise and fall of the iconic skateboarding magazine, and the first season of the Canadian crime drama “Cardinal” with Billy Campbell.

Other TV shows coming in June include the FX thrillers “The Strain: Season 3” and “Tyrant: Season 3,” the hit sitcom “Black-ish: Season 3,” and the seventh and final season of “Rizzoli & Isles.”

Older films circulating through the lineup include the Oscar-winning classic “On the Waterfront” with Marlon Brando; the financial drama “Arbitrage” with Richard Gere; the vampires-vs.-werewolves action horror “Underworld”; the dark comedy “World’s Greatest Dad” with Robin Williams; Western revival “Silverado”; family-friendly science- fiction odyssey “Starman”; and decidedly not family-friendly thrillers “Blow Out” and “Blue Velvet.”

Foreign arrivals include the samurai thriller “13 Assassins,” Stephen Chow’s Chinese fantasy epic “Journey to the West,” and the Thailand action phenomenon “Ong Bak” and its two sequels

‘Star Trek Beyond’ Available Today On Hulu and Amazon – 9 Trek Movies Added In July [UPDATED]

Star Trek Beyond on Hulu

| June 17, 2017 | By: Matt Wright 23 comments so far

Beyond comes to Amazon Prime Video and Hulu

As of today (June 17) Star Trek Beyond is making its subscription streaming service debut on both Amazon Prime Video and Hulu in the USA. It is now free to watch for subscribers of Hulu or Amazon Prime.

Beyond has the shortest window from theatrical release to subscription streaming of the three Kelvin-universe films, at 11 months. Star Trek  (2009) was 16 months, while Into Darkness was close to Beyond at 12 months. A quicker turnaround for home viewing is an industry trend. The four month difference from Star Trek in 2009 to Into Darkness in 2013 is a perfect example of how streaming services have gained major traction in the last few years and today they’re incredibly important to consumers.

If you don’t own Beyond already, go check it out , it’s worth a watch even for folks who weren’t quite so sure about the movie when it first debuted, Beyond isn’t perfect, but it has a lot of TOS heart in it.

Star Trek Beyond now streaming on Amazon and Hulu

Update: Nine Trek movies coming to Amazon and Hulu in July

Unlike the Star Trek TV series (which have been consistently available in a number of streaming services for years) the various Star Trek films often come and go from from subscription streaming services. For example, as of now the only service where you can stream any of the first 10 Trek films is CBS All Access. However, in July Hulu and Amazon Prime Video will be adding 9 out of the 10 pre-Kelvin Trek movies.

Coming to Hulu and Amazon Prime Video July 1st:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Star Trek Vll: Generations Star Trek VIII: First Contact Star Trek IX: Insurrection

UPDATE: All Access Adds More Trek Movies – Then Takes Them Away

Back in April we reported that CBS All Access (the future home to Star Trek: Discovery ) added movies to their library, including five Star Trek films. Since then they added Insurrection and Nemesis to the group, which completes their library of the Next Generation crew movies. CBS also appears to have dropped The Motion Picture , which was in the initial assortment back in April.

UPDATE: As of July 1st CBS now only has Star Trek: Nemesis (the one pre-Kelvin era film not added to Hulu and Amazon on the same day)

Where to find Trek movies on streaming services [UPDATED JULY 1]

For those interested here’s a look at subscription streaming services and what Trek movies they currently carry in the US market. As a bonus, we’ve included any Trek related documentaries each service carries.

NOTE: This chart shows what’s we know to be available as of mid-June 2017, and is subject to change.

Beyond Coming To Honda Minivans

Want a new way to entertain the kiddos in your brand new 2018 Honda Odyssey minivan? Honda has announced a partnership with Epix to add a special Epix app to the entertainment systems of the next generation Honda Odyssey minivans. As you can tell from our chart above, this means that Star Trek Beyond will be available to stream to entertain your family while you go on your own “away missions.”

Epix is the first network to make their content available through a car’s onboard entertainment system. As with the normal streaming service, you need to have Epix in your cable or satellite subscription to partake in the streaming version in the Odyssey.

Paramount+ Becoming The Streaming Home Of Star Trek In Canada

> Beyond has the shortest window from theatrical release to subscription streaming service(s) of the three Kelvin-universe films, at 11 months.

It came out a lot faster up here in Canada. ‘Star Trek Beyond’ has been available on Netflix Canada since March 17.

Beyond is a decent close out for the current cast. We’ll probably see the WWZ sequel before some form of Trek hits the big screen again. Unfortunately.

A graceful departure, and fitting given Anton’s passing. It’s just a shame they never truly attained greatness.

Greatness is a matter of opinion. The wider science fiction audience does not see the Star Trek franchise even prior to 2009 as “great.” Only 2 and 4 achieved mainstream popularity or success. And only 3 of them are what I’d consider above average. The TNG movies never achieved greatness either, one only one movie being above “meh” status.

That said, I enjoyed the three Abrams-verse movies quite a bit, a lot moreso than most of the previous 10 films (only ST6 gets a nod as better than all 3) and I really do hope they make more.

Even though I enjoyed the first two a lot, Beyond seemed to be a point of them finally figuring out how to make a classic inspired movie, and I really thought this was just the beginning.

This cast only produced about six hours of content, every other show, substantially more. This was an experiment, to try and build a strictly Trek movie franchise in the era of the tentpole, and it really wasn’t up to the task. The Abrams movies aren’t bad, but they clearly didn’t meet the expectations of a Mervel/DC/Star Wars business model.

How about a Kelvin TOS / TNG crossover done right this time. No horses.

I thought Beyond was the weakest entry in the Kelvin films. A standard villain out for revenge plot. I’m hopeful that the next one will be a classic.

I’m just hoping there will be a next one.

All three movies have villain out for revenge plots. But in Beyond he doesn’t have a BIG ship, he has many little ships. You see, it’s totally different. ;-)

At least Nero and Khan had clear revenge motivations, Kralls were frankly bizarre. I was really hoping that he’d see the error of his ways at the films climax, it would have been very Star Trek.

What motivation had Nero? Spock tried to save his planet but failed. Is this a good reason for revenge? I don’t think so. ;-)

@LeoBerlin sadly they explained it a lot better in the Countdown comics than they did in the real movie but apparently Vulcan and the Federation refused to help Romulus before it’s destruction.

I think the writing in all three is boilerplate summer blockbuster stuff. Beyond at least felt more like classic Trek with the characters, like Kirk not acting like a total bonehead. That was refreshing.

Well, that holds true for about all Trek movies, except IV…and that one had unstoppable destructive force at it’s core, too.

“Beyond isn’t perfect, but it has a lot of TOS heart in it.”

More than the first two, for sure. I liked the first twenty minutes or so, and the last five. Unfortunately what comes in between just isn’t very good.

As a lifelong fan who has rewatched beyond a few times now, I think it’s the definitely best star trek movie of the kelvin verse, if only because the characters are somewhat more relatable. Kirk is marginally less obnoxious, though Spock still feels like season one data played by an eastern european underwear model and Elba is utterly wasted. The rest of the cast work really well though, and it’s incredibly pretty.

Never the less, the plot is flat out stupid, as much as or more so than the previous kelvin films. This one is more an homage, I guess, but it’s a poor one, because it doesn’t support it’s own weight. Guy is so upset about getting himself lost and being unable to return home that he spends spend hundreds of years putting together a giant interstellar war fleet. What? He never thought to just, you know, use just one of those ships to leave? Or their own ship? Seems like that would have been way easier. How could Krall possibly grow an army if he’s life sucking someone every five minutes? So many stupid questions, and no point in asking them, because it’s a brainless movie written to accomodate a bunch of setpeices, smash things into other things, and attract as broad an audience as possible. (Drinking game: Take a shot everytime something smashes into something else. Warning: You will die.) It looks like Star Trek, but it’s not. It’s Guardians of the Galaxy. But at least it was a little better at pretending this time. 3/5

I have to agree about krall hes such an idiotic character.

Off-topic, but we lost Stephen Furst (Vir Coto of “Babylon 5”) today.

Furst did a great job on B5, and on “St. Elsewhere.” But he’ll always be Kent (“fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son”) Dorfman to me.

I really enjoyed beyond it was the closest to TOS but still good for newer audiences that want the action and thrills and it could have been bad considering they had to get a new script and director 6 months before filming, Im hoping and looking forward to the next 1!

Too bad it wasn’t 4K UHD HDR. Most Trek fans will already own it in 1080p HD. But I would have loved to see it in 4K HDR, and Amazon really needs to include more UHD content for movies.

I loved Beyond, it was certainly a much more accessible film to newcomers and casual movie fans. Pity about the horrendous marketing – it was the 50th anniversary and the powers that be should have leveraged the heck out of it. They should have taken a page from Bond and Doctor Who who really celebrated and embraced their respective golden anniversaries.

Although it only lasted for three seasons in the 1960s, the original Star Trek has become one of the most influential TV series---and pieces of science fiction in any medium---of all time. Creator Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision focuses on exploration rather than conflict, as the starship Enterprise seeks out "new life and new civilizations." Led by William Shatner's hotheaded Capt. James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy's logical Vulcan Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley's irascible Dr. McCoy, Star Trek remains a sci-fi gold standard.

Seasons 1-3 of Star Trek are streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Thanks to the popularity of Star Trek reruns, NBC brought back Gene Roddenberry and many of the show's writers and actors for this animated version, which lasted for two seasons in the 1970s. It follows the continuing adventures of the Enterprise crew and has been considered an extension of the original series, with characters and concepts that later made their way into live-action. The animation may be rudimentary, but the stories are every bit as thoughtful and layered as the episodes of the original series.

Following the continued success of Star Trek reruns and theatrical films, creator Gene Roddenberry launched a new series with a new Enterprise crew, set even further in the future. Starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, The Next Generation continues Roddenberry's focus on a harmonious future, while expanding on alien races and galactic regions introduced in the original series. Co-starring Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and more, The Next Generation has become every bit as iconic as its predecessor, setting the stage for decades of Trek to come.

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: The Next Generation are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Overlapping with the end of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine is the first Star Trek series to take place away from the Enterprise, set on a space station located in a volatile area of the galaxy. Avery Brooks leads the series as Capt. Benjamin Sisko, overseeing an unpredictable crew of Starfleet officers and alien allies, along with an entire station's worth of residents and businesses. In its later seasons, Deep Space Nine introduced serialized storytelling to Trek for the first time, gaining a reputation as the darkest and most mature Trek series to date.

Returning to the exploratory missions of a starship, Voyager takes Star Trek into an entirely new quadrant of the galaxy. The crew of the titular vessel is transported via a mysterious energy wave into an area of space where Starfleet has never been. Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) must lead her crew on a long journey home, while navigating the unfamiliar threats in this strange new region. Voyager expands the scope of Star Trek's universe while introducing fan-favorite characters like the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the former Borg Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: Voyager are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A prequel set in the years before the formation of the galaxy-spanning United Federation of Planets, Enterprise takes place on the starship Enterprise a century before it's occupied by Capt. Kirk and his crew. The primarily human crew is led by Capt. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), as inhabitants of Earth are just beginning to explore the galaxy and encounter some of Star Trek's familiar alien races. Enterprise features a more action-oriented focus than previous Trek series, setting the tone for Trek series and movies to come, and its later seasons are driven by long-term serialized stories.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Enterprise are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

After a dormant period of more than a decade following the cancellation of Enterprise, Discovery brings Star Trek into the streaming era with another prequel. Set after Enterprise but before the original series, Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, the science officer on the starship Discovery. The first two seasons explore the early days of the Federation and revisit many classic Trek themes and characters. In later seasons, both the starship and the show are thrust forward hundreds of years into the future, truly going boldly where no Trek has gone before.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Discovery are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

In conjunction with Star Trek's streaming revival, this anthology of bite-size episodes provides supplemental stories for the new Trek era. Some are standalone pieces highlighting minor characters or side stories from Star Trek: Discovery, while others tie more closely to ongoing plots from Discovery (and later Star Trek: Picard as well). It's another way for Star Trek's creators to illustrate their expansive universe of galactic space exploration.

All episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Patrick Stewart reprises his Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a series set 20 years after Picard's last Star Trek appearance. The retired Picard returns to active duty with a new mission and a new crew, in a slower, more character-driven story than other Trek series. In addition to Stewart, actors from other past Trek series, including Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan, make appearances, as Picard struggles to find his place in a changed Starfleet that no longer reflects his values.

Seasons 1-2 of Star Trek: Picard are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The first animated Star Trek series since the 1970s is also the first overtly comedic Trek series, focusing on a group of lower-level recruits who do all the grunt work on intergalactic voyages. Set around the end of the Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era, Lower Decks takes place on the Cerritos, a Starfleet ship mostly assigned to minor missions. The creators combine gentle mockery with a deep love for and knowledge of Trek lore, which makes them perfect for taking the franchise down a peg.

Star Trek returns to animation again for this family-friendly series aimed at bringing in a younger audience. Like Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy takes place in the remote Delta Quadrant, where a rowdy group of young aliens from a prison colony discover an abandoned Starfleet ship. They take control of the ship so they can escape their grim circumstances, in a harsh backwater beyond the reach of the United Federation of Planets. As they flee the colony's cruel overlord, they're trained in starship operations by a hologram of Voyager's legendary Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew).

Season 1 of Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds takes place on the Enterprise before Capt. Kirk took over, when it was led by Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Pike is joined by younger versions of familiar characters who've served on the Enterprise, including Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). In contrast to the heavily serialized storytelling of other modern Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds focuses primarily on single-episode stories, enhancing its throwback style.

More Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi May Be on the Horizon

'alien: romulus' is about to hit a scarily impressive box office milestone, the 10 best christopher walken movies, ranked.

It’s become a disheartening trend for reboots to pay far too much homage to their more popular predecessors rather than try to stand on their own feet. The thinking seems to be that if there are enough shout-outs, it will pass for a kind of shibboleth with the fanbase. We’ve seen it with Ghostbusters , Star Wars: The Force Awakens , and we saw it with J.J. Abrams ’ Star Trek movies. Oddly, while those movies could drop in references to the Kobayashi Maru or make Khan a villain, those overt references didn’t make Abrams movies feel more like Star Trek because Trek , a 50-year-old franchise that’s spawned six TV series, twelve movies, and countless tie-in novels, is more than the sum of its parts. There’s an essence to Star Trek that’s harder to define. But Justin Lin ’s Star Trek Beyond has come closer than any Star Trek film since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country to finding that essence.

The Enterprise is in its third year of its five-year mission, and Captain James Kirk ( Chris Pine ) is starting to feel listless. In his captain’s log, he even notes how life aboard the Enterprise is starting to feel “episodic”, and what’s more, he’s not even sure if he wants a captain’s life or if he’s still living in his father’s shadow. Kirk’s decision is put on hold when, while re-provisioning at the Yorktown starbase, Starfleet receives a distress signal from an alien who claims that her crew is in trouble. The Enterprise rides to the rescue only to be attacked by a swarm that obliterates the ship and scatters the crew on an uncharted world. The crew must figure out how to regroup, get off the planet, and stop the villainous Krall ( Idris Elba ) from unleashing a powerful weapon.

In an odd way, by lowering the stakes and focusing more on the crew, Star Trek Beyond actually feels more like Star Trek: The Original Series than a slew of fan service could ever provide. Lin, along with screenwriters Simon Pegg and Doug Jung , have found the right balance in showing that they’re Trek fans, but finally establishing that the Kelvin universe is its own place with its own attitude. There are going to be some elements that will never win over die-hard fans and moments of over-reach, but at least Beyond comes off like it’s moving in the right direction for trying to be both Star Trek and a modern interpretation that can manage the tricky balance of appealing to both Trekkies and non-fans alike.

There were those that were worried Lin might try to turn Star Trek into his Fast & Furious franchise, and in a way, he kind of has, but in the best sense possible. Lin has taken his strongest element from the Fast & Furious movies—the emphasis on family and rousing action—and applied it to the Star Trek universe while leaving out Fast & Furious ’ dismissal of physics and the objectification of women. For some, this will leave Trek still too action-oriented, which is a valid complaint. While a slightly slower-paced, more sci-fi-minded film would be more in keeping with Trek ’s values, I think at this point we have to accept that this new Star Trek universe is an action franchise.

The reason why Beyond works better than the previous two Trek films is because there’s an emphasis on exploration and discovery whereas Star Trek 2009 is about getting the crew together and Into Darkness is about a manhunt/conspiracy. Beyond , while steeped in being a summer blockbuster, feels rooted in the TOS episodes where the crew would find themselves on an alien planet. And while there’s plenty of action, Lin keeps it grounded by finally giving the entire crew their close-up.

By splitting up the crew, it challenges the dynamics we’ve seen before, and the results are delightful. We’ve got Uhura ( Zoe Saldana ) and Sulu ( John Cho ) trying to escape from Krall; Scotty (Pegg) and the alien Jaylah ( Sofia Boutella ) working to repair her ship; Chekov ( Anton Yelchin ) assisting Kirk; and the best pairing of all, Bones ( Karl Urban ) and Spock ( Zachary Quinto ) trying to survive the wilderness. While Spock’s emotional range in these scenes will definitely go too far for some, again, we have to accept that in this universe, Spock is more willing to embrace his human side, and I’m glad that Beyond does it full-heartedly rather than just make Spock a poorly-restrained Vulcan. The chemistry between Spock and Bones is top-notch and they almost steal the movie.

The drawback to putting so much emphasis on action and family is that the movie forgets its initial conflict—Kirk feeling lost in space—and this conflict remains forgotten until almost the end of the movie because it’s tied in with a twist regarding Krall. You have to wait until midway through the third act for a theme to surface. And it’s not a particularly deep theme, but the film is biting its tongue because it doesn’t want to tip its hand with the reveal. However, that means there’s really nothing for Kirk to wrestle with beyond saving the ship. He’s definitely the portrait of a responsible captain here—as opposed to Trek ’09 and Into Darkness —but whereas those films are about Kirk growing into his role as captain, Beyond begins with raising an interesting question: does Kirk even want to be captain? Sadly, that question doesn’t really get explored through the course of the film.

Beyond isn’t ideal Trek , but that’s okay because it’s started to discover its own identity while not casting off the essence of what made Star Trek special in the first place. If you’re deeply entrenched against Abrams’ Star Trek films, Beyond probably won’t change your opinion (although it’s nice to see this new aesthetic without being pummeled by lens flares) because these are action movies now. What makes Beyond impressive is how it’s managed to blend an action aesthetic with enough deep cuts and esoteric references that the film isn’t screaming to remind you it’s Star Trek . The references are still there (and not just from the original Trek , but also Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise ), but they’re no longer stopping the film in its tracks. By placing the emphasis on the crew and on discovery, the Star Trek film franchise is now boldly going somewhere worth exploring.

Star Trek Beyond

is star trek beyond on hulu

“There’s no relative direction in the vastness of space,” a Starfleet high mucky-muck tells  Enterprise  Captain James T. Kirk ( Chris Pine ) in “Star Trek Beyond.” “There’s only you.” She’s asking him whether he wants to give up his captain’s seat for a chance at a powerful desk job on the eve of his thirtieth birthday, a year younger than his father was when he died. Her language is meant to spur Kirk to look inward, and for a moment we might hope that he will, and that the film will look inward with him.

There’s a precedent for this sort of thing. Where all of the TV incarnations of “ Star Trek ” were mainly about morality and philosophy, with characterization serving as a means of examining those dramatic values, most of the big-screen film versions, including the ’80s and ’90s versions of the flagship TV show, were mainly concerned with the heroes’ personalities. The screenplays gave us detailed examinations of, say, the relationship between Kirk and his half-Vulcan first officer Mr. Spock, between Kirk and the United Federation of Planets, between Kirk and the Klingons who tormented his civilization and killed his only son, and between all the characters (Kirk especially) and the prospect of aging and death. It was more soap opera than space opera at times, but always fun to watch, sometimes moving.

What undermines “Star Trek Beyond” is that it’s ultimately not interested in taking a long look at the “you” of Kirk, Spock ( Zachary Quinto ), ship’s doctor “Bones” McCoy ( Karl Urban ), communications officer Uhura ( Zoe Saldana ), and the rest of the NCC-1701 crew. Sure, it nods in that direction. Even the worst “Star Trek” stories do. But in the end it’s mostly a good big-budget sci-fi action movie that’s been marinated in “Star Trek” flavor packets—and thus not terribly different from the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot or its sequel, “ Star Trek Into Darkness .”

“Star Trek Beyond” pits the crew of the  Enterprise  against another bellowing megalomaniac ( Idris Elba ) who wants to punish the United Federation of Planets for its perceived sins. It’s the best of the new “Trek” films, but it’s still an unsatisfying effort if you want “Star Trek” to be something more than a military-minded outer space action flick, with familiar, beloved characters shoehorned into a standard mix of martial arts slugfests, close-quarters firefights, and scenes of starships and cities being shredded and burned. Advance publicity hyped “Star Trek Beyond” as a return to the original series’ roots as a showcase for a bunch of eccentric personalities traveling the galaxy, ingeniously solving problems, and indulging in populist philosophizing about civilization and the frontier as they went along. But that’s not what we get here—not really.

Yes, there’s a promising setup (the  Enterprise  crew is held hostage by a vicious bad guy who rules a backwater planet a la Kurtz in “Heart of Darkness”). And there are suggestions of classic “Star Trek” style action-plus-characterization-plus-cleverness, and pleasing performances by a cast that has settled into each others’ rhythms, as a real-world naval crew would after years of sailing together.

But the movie never delivers on its considerable promise because it’s always in such a hurry to get to the next action scene. And aside from three magnificent setpieces—the first, crippling sneak attack by a fleet of tiny ships that swarm the  Enterprise  like explosive bees, and two vertigo-inducing chase-and-fight scenes in which geography goes all M.C. Escher on us—the action is not good enough to be the film’s main course. Lin, who proved in the “Fast and Furious” series that he could do great or near-great action, here substitutes wobbly camerawork, chop-chop editing and rumbling sound effects for suspense and a sense of spatial design. It’s a step up from the action in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” movies, but that’s not the sort of thing one should brag about. A climactic reprise of a certain overused Beastie Boys song might be the franchise’s low point, rivaled only by the laughable credits sequence of “Star Trek V,” which cut from a helicopter shot of a lean young stuntman scaling a craggy peak in the Pyrenees to a close-up of the 57-year-old star/director Shatner’s meaty hand in a studio, gripping a fiberglas “rock.”

Simon Pegg and Doug Jung’s screenplay provides the right amount of homage (as when Kirk grumbles after an opening action scene that he ripped his shirt again), plus Spock/McCoy odd-couple banter and some marvelous, character-based laugh lines (Scotty demands that Kirk give an opinion on one of his engineering improvisations, because “if I mess it up, I don’t want it to be just my fault”). There’s psychological nuance, irony, even a political subtext (Elba’s character, Krall, a reptilian Che Guevara-type who wants the galaxy’s “frontier” to “push back” against the Federation’s expansionism). Too bad none of these aspects are filled out with the detail they deserve. Krail’s fire-and-brimstone sermonizing is turned to nonsense by a pointless and self-defeating third act “twist”—like we need another one of those after the boneheaded fan service of “Darkness”!—and there are points late in the film where “Star Trek Beyond” seems jolted by the sudden remembrance of things that it told us it was going to deal with but didn’t.

Uhura spends most of the movie in a prison camp. Kirk, Spock and even McCoy have human moments, but they spend too much of their screen time sprinting through hallways, firing phaser pistols, and piloting spaceships while yelling and grimacing in tight closeup, like the heroes of every other science fiction-flavored action movie projected in theaters recently. Krall and other characters allude to the Federation’s fake-benevolent brand of imperialism, but unless you’re familiar with examples from elsewhere in the “Star Trek” universe or got briefed by a super-fan before buying a ticket, you’ll leave with no sense of whether the villains’ grievances are legitimate, much less if you’re supposed to feel mixed emotions at Kirk’s inevitable triumph.

Spock, whose home planet was destroyed by a renegade Romulan warlord in the first movie, suffers most from the filmmakers’ preoccupation with  pew-pew-pew! a ction-adventure. For three movies now, Spock’s been carrying a crushing load of survivor’s guilt. The character’s barely disguised Jewishness, brilliantly articulated by the late Leonard Nimoy in the original TV and movie series, is more pronounced in the new franchise: he’s been turned into a holocaust survivor, part of a fragile Vulcan diaspora haunted by genocide. But the scripts seem scared of treating Spock’s predicament with the seriousness it deserves, much less daring to put it at the center of a film. Here it’s treated mainly as an explanation for why Spock can’t seem to keep a relationship going with Uhura. The death of Leonard Nimoy is integrated into the story by having Vulcan diplomats inform Spock of the death of Ambassador Spock, an alternate-universe incarnation of the character who dispensed advice and plot points to new Spock whenever the screenwriters painted themselves into a corner. The film’s method of mourning Nimoy’s Spock makes the Spockus ex machina  thing worse. New Spock mourns classic Spock as if the two were dear friends who had dinner every Monday at the same Chinese restaurant.

The missteps of writing and direction are more depressing when you consider the excellence of the core cast. Quinto and Saldana give the Spock-Uhura relationship and their own spotlight moments a lot more than the film gives them. Pegg is a hoot as Scotty, colorful but never hammy, though we may justifiably raise a Spock-like eyebrow at all the times that the actor-screenwriter lets his character save the day. Pine’s Kirk seems to be morphing seamlessly into Shatner’s, complete with surprising pauses and intonations, but he’s more credible as a strong, respected leader; watch how the actor grows more calm and friendly whenever Kirk’s bridge crew is becoming more agitated. Elba is such a strong presence throughout, even near the end, that it’s a shame Krall is never granted the depth and complexity that his character keeps threatening to disclose.

At this point it’s worth asking what, if anything, this franchise is good for besides generating cash for Paramount and its above-the-line talent. Everything that made the original TV series and its follow-ups, small- and big-screen, seem so open-hearted, intelligent and playful is marginalized to make room for hyperactively edited action scenes and displays of hardware and production design. These are technically state-of-the-art but ultimately not all that different from what you see in most other CGI-driven action pictures, superhero as well as sci-fi—long, loud spectacles that are filled with people fighting, blowing up cities and planets, and crashing things into other things, instead of finding some other, more surprising way to move the plot along. What’s the point of giving up pleasures that the “Star Trek” franchise is good at providing, to make more room for pleasures that most big-budget science fiction and fantasy already give us, month after month and year after year? Why boldly go where everyone else is already going?

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

In the first of over a dozen Star Trek movies, 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture doesn't mirror any of the installments that would follow. It's slow, meditative pacing harkens more towards Stanley Kubrick 's masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey than any of the more action-packed Star Trek sequels we would see in its wake. Suffice to say, you either like it or you don't. Personally, I find it to be a bit of a snooze, but I can see the appeal. There's no denying that the filmmakers behind this first cinematic journey took full advantage of their cinematic potential, filling the frame with long, lingering shots of the Enterprise floating throughout the recesses of space. Be warned, though: it's definitely a slow-burn. And oddly hyper-sexual too.

Stream it on Hulu. Available on Amazon Prime until June 30th. Available on IMDb TV on July 1st.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

For many Star Trek fans, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is the greatest Star Trek movie ever made . And it's hard to argue otherwise, unless the newest Star Trek blockbuster really knocks our space socks off. Director Nicholas Meyer applied old-fashioned story characteristics to the futuristic franchise, resulting in a Moby Dick -esque tale where Captain James T. Kirk and the rest of the USS Enterprise crew square off against the tyrant Khan (Ricardo Montalban), who escapes exile to exact revenge on Kirk while also trying to acquire a powerful device called Genesis. A smartly-crafted tale filled with character-driven stakes, thoughtful themes, and many thrilling moments, Star Trek has never topped this sequel in its cinematic history.

Stream it on Hulu . Available on Amazon Prime until June 30th.

The Cast of Star Trek III: The Search For Spock

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1984)

Though it doesn't reach the same heights as The Wrath of Khan , notably in how it downplays the meaningfulness of Spock's ultimate sacrifice in the movie's emotional climax, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock finds the Enterprise hoping to bring dear Spock back to life whenever his spirit is found lodged inside the mind of Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley). It's an admittedly forced effort to put the popular Vulcan back into the fold, but who could complain about that? In addition to reprising his role of Spock, Leonard Nimoy also jumps into the director's chair for this third Star Trek motion picture, and he proves to be a commendable captain. It's not the best Star Trek movie, but it's an enjoyable, emotional sequel with a big heart.

William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy - Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

In a curious twist, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home progresses the popular science-fiction franchise by pushing the series back. Specifically, it finds the USS Enterprise going back in time to (then) modern-day San Fransisco to protect the now-extinct humpback whales. Sure enough, in their time-traveling efforts, they find themselves to be fish-out-of-water in a primitive society they don't understand.

It's an undeniably goofy idea for a Star Trek movie, but it works! The premise is fresh and surprisingly funny, proving director Leonard Nimoy's surprising knack for comedy (something he'd continue to explore whenever he took over the reins for 1987's Three Men and a Baby ) and an environmentally-cautious storyline that's unexpectedly rousing and affecting. It's also one of the more accessible Star Trek sequels, resulting in one of the most inspired, entertaining Star Trek blockbusters.

Stream it on IMDb TV , CBS All Access and Popcorn Flix .

Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, DeForest Kelley - Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

While Captain James T. Kirk was a noble commander of the USS Enterprise, the leadership skills of William Shatner , the singular actor who played him, left something to be desired in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. While perhaps not quite as bad as its reputation suggests (at least in my humble opinion), it's hard to call this heavily-panned sequel a shining moment for the series. Shatner's inexperience as a director is apparent, thus resulting in a clumsy, thematically skewed sequel in which the Enterprise is in search of God at the center of the galaxy, and it lacks the charm, smarts, and winning appeal of the better Star Trek movies that proceeded it. Thankfully, The Final Frontier wasn't the last time we saw the Enterprise.

The Cast of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

With director Nicholas Meyer back in the director's chair, the Enterprise was steered back in the right direction with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, giving the long-running TV/cinematic series a proper send-off for its thoughtful band of space cruisers. The story, which follows Enterprise racing to stop conspirators with a militaristic agenda, is appropriately thematic, though it's best seen as a lovely, melancholy goodbye to the crew we know and love. Particularly since Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry dying shortly before its premiere, there's an undeniable somberness to this sequel. While Captain Kirk's story continued with Generations , this is the last time we see the original Enterprise crew in action. It's a poignant send-off to one of the most iconic ensembles of the past millenium.

Stream it on Hulu . Available on Amazon Prime until June 30th. Available on IMDb TV on July 1st.

Patrick Stewart, William Shatner - Star Trek: Generations

Star Trek: Generations (1994)

In theory, this cinematic torch passing between the Star Trek Enterprise and Star Trek: The Next Generation 's crew should've been monumental. Alas, this crossover film became one of the weaker installments in the prolonged sci-fi series, despite touching performances from William Shatner (in his final portrayal of Kirk) and Patrick Stewart . As we watch these two captains join forces to stop a villain (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying the solar system, we get what could've been a thoughtful, poignant reflection on legacies and what it means to sacrifice everything for the common good of humanity and beyond.

Alas, the material doesn't match the potential, resulting in an underwhelming conclusion to Kirk's story. Perhaps that's what makes it worse. Knowing it's his last adventure, this otherwise forgettable sequel doesn't match his indelible legacy.

Stream it on Crackle, Tubi, CBS All Access and Popcorn Flix. Available on IMDb TV on July 1st.

Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner - Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

For many Star Trek fans, Star Trek: First Contact is the best TNG movie. It's understandable why many people feel this way. In this thrilling sequel, which sees the crew going back to the 21st century to stop the Borg from conquering Earth, you get elements of both Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home, resulting in an exciting, appropriately cinematic continuation for The Next Generation . It's easily the most critically and commercially successful of the spin-off series' films, and for some folks, it's considered one of the best Star Trek movies. It also, as it happens, harkens back to Moby Dick .

Stream It on IMDb TV , CBS All Access and Popcorn Flix.

Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner - Star Trek: Insurrection

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

While the reception to Star Trek: Insurrection is mixed among Star Trek fans, it was a quaint return-to-form (in so much as a Star Trek blockbuster can be "quaint") to the more ideological roots of the sci-fi franchise. We follow the Starfleet crew as they discover a conspiracy with the species Son'a to steal a peaceful planet called Ba'ku, known for its rejuvenating properties. Once again, environmentalism factors into the fold, and the plot is admittedly silly. Insurrection is also distinctly restrained, notably compared to First Contact , which was also directed by Jonathan Frakes . But its smaller, more insulated plot is pretty charming. Its focus on character and themes in the midst of action feels like an extension of the show in a way the other, more bombastic TNG movies didn't.

Tom Hardy, Patrick Stewart - Star Trek: Nemesis

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

In what would be the final Star Trek movie for The Next Generation crew and the last Star Trek movie until 2009, Star Trek: Nemesis finds Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a personal battle with Shinzon ( Tom Hardy ), an evil clone of Picard, who threatens to take control of the Roman Star Empire. It's a silly premise, but one that's notably more high-concept than Insurrection . While it lacks the wit and sophistication of TNG 's TV run, opting for thunderous action beats instead, Nemesis does have compelling moments between Patrick Stewart and a young Hardy. While he'd get his moments to shine in better projects , Hardy's star power is undeniable in this villainous role. While it was a critical/commercial disappointment, it paved the way for Hardy's future A-list status.

Stream it on Crackle , Tubi, CBS All Access and Popcorn Flix. Available on IMDb TV on July 1st.

Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine - Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek (2009)

Following an underwhelming series of Star Trek movies, J.J. Abrams ' vibrant, exuberant 2009 reboot, Star Trek, felt like the kick in the pants that the franchise needed . While other attempts at reinventing/retooling other popular IPs have often fell flat, this energetic, immensely entertaining new origin story of the original USS enterprise crew was benefitted by Abrams' sharp eye for action, an enjoyably fresh perspective on these popular characters, and sharp performances from our young cast, notably Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, and Simon Pegg as Scotty.

Many reboots fail to balance between honoring their elders and doing something uniquely fun, but Abrams figured it out fabulously, resulting in a refreshing new take.

Stream it on FuboTV.

Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine - Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

While certainly among the most contested Star Trek movies, particularly in how it rips off Wrath of Khan in shameless fashion, there are several thrills to be found in Star Trek Into Darkness , J.J. Abrams' follow-up to his massive 2009 blockbuster. In this sequel, the new USS Enterprise crew battle a former Starfleet-turned-terrorist who goes by the name "John Harrison" (Benedict Cumberbatch) — although (as you've probably heard), that's not his real name.

The pacing is fast and relentless, which helps smooth out some wonkier story beats, though fans who disparaged the whiz-bang-buck style of Star Trek (2009) were understandably more critical of this action-packed sequel. Nevertheless, it's not without its emotional moments, particularly Leonard Nimoy playing Spock for the last time.

Stream it on FX Now .

Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine - Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

2016's Star Trek Beyond didn't get the same notice as its action-packed predecessors, ultimately underperforming at the box office. But for many Star Trek fans, it was a welcomed return-to-form. Directed by Justin Fix ( Fast Five ) and co-written by Simon Pegg , Star Trek Beyond follows the crew of the USS Enterprise as they explore the further recesses of space and encountering the villainous Krall (Idris Elba) who puts them to the test. Despite the high stakes, Beyond was notably less over-energized than its predecessor, returning to the more intellectually-stimulating material that made the series what it is today.

Though it didn't capture the same heights as the best installments, it was a worthwhile sequel. It was also an unexpectedly mournful goodbye to Anton Yelchin , who died shortly before its release .

Stream it on IMDb TV.

Star Trek: Voyager

“Space… the Final Frontier.” Those words have a certain sound to them, and not just because you hear the voice of William Shatner or Patrick Stewart saying them. They have a sound to them because they’re associated with music, specifically some of the most iconic themes in television history.

Even more so than the cold opens that accompany most episodes of Star Trek , the themes need to capture the franchise’s sense of wonder, optimism, and discovery. They need to evoke in the mind of the watcher an endless horizon just waiting for a Starfleet crew to find.

Every Star Trek TV theme achieves this goal, albeit some better than others. So here’s our ranking of every theme song from the most pedestrian to the most inspiring.

11. Star Trek: The Animated Series

It’s so much easier to admire Star Trek: The Animated Series than it is to enjoy it. As much as the show manages to evoke the spirit and feel part of the Original Series on a cheap TV animation budget, one has to look past a lot of clunkiness to get to the good stuff.

The same is true of the new theme music by Filmation composer Ray Ellis, under the pseudonym Yvette Blais and Jeff Michael. At times, the TAS theme captures the sense of wonder found in the Original Series theme. But too often it’s thin and tinny, hampered by flat orchestration and poorly-recorded horns. The composition itself isn’t too bad, but it feels quintessentially 1970s, dated in a way the best themes do not. Instead of boldly going, The Animated Series theme keeps things stuck in the world of Filmation.

10. Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard wanted to move the main character away from the respected captain we knew from The Next Generation . This was an older, more contemplative man, living in disgrace from even the organization through which he built his legend. The Picard theme by Jeff Russo reflects those intentions, a soft, almost discordant piece of music that eschews the stirring confidence of the other themes.

Russo works in elements of previous Star Trek music, namely the march of the TNG theme and the tune from “The Inner Light.” But no part connects with the other, feeling like a series of fragments more than a complete whole. Although one appreciates the daring in Russo’s composition for Picard , it’s much less enjoyable than most of the other themes. A good idea in theory, but not in execution, like much of Picard itself.

9. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

So much of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is about making something new with the familiar. Spun off from the very different Discovery , Strange New Worlds puts viewers back on the Enterprise , filled with familiar characters, including Uhura, Spock, and James T. Kirk himself. The theme by Jeff Russo tries to do the same, right down to the traditional spoken word intro, this time delivered by Anson Mount as Captain Pike.

Except, unlike the rest of SNW , the theme feels like a retread of glory days instead of a new interpretation of classic ideas. The song isn’t bad, combining the marching cadence of the TOS theme with the wistful hope of the modern themes. It’s a pleasing composition, but also unsurprising. It sounds more like an update of the classic Trek theme, which isn’t bad, but is a bit underwhelming.

8. Star Trek: Lower Decks

Almost every complaint lodged against the theme for Strange New Worlds also applies to Star Trek: Lower Decks . Although far more irreverent, Lower Decks goes back to a fan-favorite point in time, during the 1990s series, and its theme reflects that setting. Chris Westlake, who worked with showrunner Mike McMahan on Solar Opposites , emulates the tone of ’90s Trek shows, especially TNG .

The propulsive tune has the sense of adventure that one wants for a good Trek theme, threaded with notes of wonder and whimsey. Some might complain that the tune doesn’t indicate the show’s comedic elements, but that’s part of the Lower Decks charm. The show pokes loving fun at Star Trek , coming from a place of deep knowledge and respect for the franchise, which the theme song reflects.

7. Star Trek: Discovery

The farther we get from the show’s first few seasons, the easier it is to see Star Trek: Discovery as the experimental, off-beat franchise entry that it is. That experimental aspect is reflected in the way the theme song from composer Jeff Russo integrates elements of the classic TOS theme, but then moves in its own direction.

Instead of just launching forward, the theme holds back. A bed of soft bass holds the theme together, giving space for playful strings. But the theme plays out in loosely connected pieces, never really coming together, even when it returns to notes of the TOS theme at the end. All of these elements signal an evolving series, one that has no one single identity—fitting for Discovery .

6. Star Trek: The Original Series

Alright, let’s just get this out of the way. The theme to Star Trek: The Original Series is iconic. There’s a reason that so many modern Trek themes quote the original. That said, there’s a reason that these themes only quote the start, the tinkling chimes that accompany the “Final Frontier” speech or the confident strings that follow.

No one quotes the rest of the theme, and there’s a reason for that. While the melody itself is pleasing and fits the exploration ideas of the show, nothing else in the song from Alexander Courage works. The vocals are cheesy and irritating, the bongos are too busy, drawing attention from the best parts of the song. Courage’s composition deserves credit for setting the standard, but no one is upset that the themes moved on from there.

5. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Many ( including folks at Den of Geek ) put Star Trek: Deep Space Nine at the top of franchise rankings. The show’s moral complexity, its vision of different people and groups trying to come together, and its embrace of concepts such as large-scale war and religion make it hard to beat as the greatest entry in Star Trek history.

However, the theme by Dennis McCarthy doesn’t really hint at these titanic stakes—even after it was revamped in later seasons. Instead, the slow, contemplative theme evokes loneliness and even stagnation. A solo trumpet drives the theme, playing over the warm strings that rise and fall away. It makes for a beautiful work, but not one that stays in the mind like others.

4. Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is easily the most unique of the Star Trek shows. Directed at kids with an animation style that recalls the Star Wars series on Disney+, yet still a sequel to Star Trek: Voyager , Prodigy doesn’t necessarily sound like an idea that would succeed. And yet, with its team of plucky kids and fantastic stories about established characters like Janeway, Chakotay, and Wesley Crusher , Prodigy embodies the Trek ethos better than any other current show.

That unique approach is highlighted in the show’s theme, which comes from none other than Michael Giacchino. The tune owes a debt to Voyager , unsurprisingly, but there’s also a lot of his work from the Kelvin universe movies in there, too. A warm, confident melody pushes the song forward, giving way for occasional moments of reflective calm and explosive propulsion. The song reflects the excitement of the show, in which a bunch of rowdy kids follow in the footsteps of respected travelers.

3. Star Trek: Enterprise

Yes. Really. Of course, we all recoiled in disgust the first time that we heard the lyrics “faith of the heart” greeting us to Enterprise’s premiere “Broken Bow.” Why abandon the orchestral themes that have always been part of the series? And why abandon them for a terrible adult contemporary number, one written by Diane Warren for the awful Robin Williams vehicle Patch Adams ?

But something strange happens by the time you get to episode 8. You start singing along. The radio-friendly licks and obvious hooks sink in and feel, somehow, right. And when the more up-tempo version kicks in with season three, we’re all channeling our inner Russell Watson to belt out our feelings. I guess you could say it’s a long road to loving “Where My Heart Will Take Me,” but we all get there eventually.

2. Star Trek: The Next Generation

Yes, this is a cheat. The music used in Star Trek: The Next Generation first came from Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture . But, honestly, do you associate that stirring march with Kirk in his pajamas, staring at the viewscreen? Or do you picture Jean-Luc Picard and Data and Q? Of course, it’s the latter, even if we’re watching a way-too-long sequence of the saucer section of the Enterprise-D separating.

The theme is a better fit for TNG than TMP anyway because it’s all about moving forward. Goldsmith’s composition strides forward, not even pausing for a second to second guess itself. Even when it softens for a reflective middle section, the theme keeps marching ahead, boldly going, all the way to its final triumphant flourish, keeping Trek alive for the next generation and beyond.

1. Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek: Voyager may be the least loved among the first five series, but it has the most perfect theme of the entire franchise. Jerry Goldsmith nails it, combining the forward march of TNG with the sense of wonder from TOS and the loneliness of DS9 . This is a show about a ship lost in a distant quadrant, holding to their exploration ideals while remaining confident that they’ll get home.

Those aspects combine in the central tension of the theme, with the brass punching out its main melody and soft strings rising up, adding hints of sadness. Throughout the song come occasional chimes, highlighting the hopeful moments in Voyager ‘s journey, while never forgetting the danger and sadness in their plight. It’s everything wonderful about Star Trek , all presented in one minute and 40 seconds.
