Supporting students and staff

Student support.

Once students have entered Curtin, a wide range of services and programs are available to support them through their studies, particularly during the first few semesters.

Your role as a CC is to Identify diverse groups of students such as ‘new to Curtin’, international and global, rural, low SES or indigenous students so that engagement strategies can be developed and implemented to support retention, engagement and completion. You may wish to track these students to ensure course progression.

You will also need to:

  • be available for student queries, providing guidance and direction to Student Support Services
  • manage students in line with Curtin’s Student Charter and Curtin’s Values of integrity, respect, courage, excellence and impact.  Liaising with the UCs as necessary. You can help to guide and model expectations regarding student behaviour and responsibilities with your own behaviours
  • maintain records of meetings, emails and other forms of communication with students as this may be needed in the case of appeals .

Some students will require individual study plans (for example, if they have CRL or have failed a unit previously or depending on unit availability), your role may include developing these study plans or you may have assistance in your area from your Student Support Office.

If you have any questions about development of study plans, please contact your Student Service Office .

Facilitate accommodations as outlined in the Student with Disability Procedures as indicated in an individual student’s Curtin Access Plan .

Data analytics

Be sure to check on student engagement with UCs using Data Analytics at regular intervals through the study period acting any areas of concern in Engagement as highlighted in the data analytics. By examining and acting on the data, we can improve our teaching practices and enhance the student experience and outcomes.

Student feedback

Encourage students to provide constructive feedback on units for quality assurance purposes through Curtin’s Online System for gathering and reporting student feedback on their learning experiences.  As the CC, you will need to review the student evaluation for your course and take actions as necessary in collaboration with the Director of Learning and Teaching if needed.

It is recommended that units implement an early pulse check, this gives students an opportunity for providing formative feedback on the unit within the first half of the study period and gives UCs the opportunity to implement changes in response to student feedback during the same study period. This provides students with reassurance that their feedback is heard and acted on where feasible and appropriate. It is worth checking in with the UCs as to how this is going – INSERT link when available

Content Block

Staff support and mentoring.

Your role as CC involves leading others (e.g. UC, seconded staff and casual academic staff, as well as developing and maintaining staff capability to support  learning and teaching excellence .

Take an active role in the performance review process ( subject to the practices within your school/locality)  and in  recognising teaching excellence   in the staff in your course.
