Those who specialise might have their sights set on industries they are already in or professions they are intrested in. For example, a hotel employee doing an MBA specialisation in tourism and hospitality might have their eye on one day becoming general manager of their hotel. Our teaching staff support you throughout your degree to help you understand the job market, where the current opportunities are and what strategies will help you. The VIT coordinator for industry engagement has contacts with various partners and can help students seeking work upon graduation.

    Frequently asked questions

Your go-to resource for instant answers to common queries, making your journey smoother and more informed.

Is the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Course accredited and is the qualification recognised by the Australian Government?

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) course is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency ( TEQSA ), the regulator of higher education and the accrediting authority for higher education courses in Australia. You may look up the National Register for this course. VIT is registered by TEQSA to offer and confer Australian higher education award for the completion of an accredited Australian course of study – MBA.

The qualification conferred upon completion is recognised by the Australian Government and will provide you with a competitive edge in the job market, both in Australia and overseas.

What is the difference between full time and part time study?

Full time means you study 6-8 units in an academic year. Part time gives you the flexibility to take a lighter course load, which gives many working people more flexibility. Part time study is only available to students not on student visa. It is estimated each unit could take between 6 and 10 hours each week of classes, readings and assignments. This can vary depending on how quickly a student becomes familiar with the course material.

How long will the MBA take me?

A full course load of 16 units is expected to take 2 years of full time study. However, you may be eligible for recognised prior learning (RPL) based on your education and work experience.

Can I enrol in the MBA without an undergraduate degree?

Yes, if you have at least 5 years professional, managerial or supervisory experience. You are first enrolled in our graduate certificate of business administration (GCBA, the first four units of our MBA) and on successful completion, you may progress to finish the rest of the MBA curriculum.

Why is your MBA 16 units whereas some others are 11 or 12 units?

The business world is becoming increasingly complex. We believe our students need to be armed with a wider range of knowledge than others so they are more employable and can better face the challenges of tomorrow. Harvard University started the world’s first MBA in 1908 where students still undertake a 2 year degree. Why would we deviate from best practice? Most 12 unit MBA courses do not have specialisation electives. At VIT though, we offer students the opportunity to specialize in one of the following areas – Leadership and Management, Information Systems, Finance, Tourism and Hospitality Management – which provides for far more in-depth knowledge of these areas.

How does your MBA compare with somewhere else?

All Australian accredited degrees are approved by the Australian Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency.  So, the VIT MBA is academically equivalent to any other institution in Australia and around the world.

What elective units can I choose?

Not all units are offered at any time. You may choose elective units from those scheduled in the timetable in a particular study period.

    Is there financial aid available?

Domestic students do not have financial aid, however, they may be eligible for FEE-HELP from the Australian government. Some may be eligible for our scholarships in special circumstances. To know more, please contact our team on  [email protected] .

Financial aid may be available depending on your circumstances and where you are resident.

Domestic students may be eligible for Fee-HELP from the Government and could be eligible for a VIT Scholarship

Please contact our team at [email protected] for further information.

Am I likely to receive credit for Recognised Prior Learning?

If you have a recognised bachelor’s degree in business (AQF7 equivalent) or related discipline, or a recognised bachelor’s degree or above in any discipline and at least 2 years professional, managerial or supervisory experience, you may be eligible to receive credit for recognised prior learning. However, your academic qualifications must be 10 years old or less to be recognised. The VIT RPL committee will assess RPL applications on a case-by-case basis.

What is the Start Your MBA for free option?

We understand it is a big decision to pursue an MBA and you may not be sure if you have the time or feel suited for it. That’s understandable and natural, and we’re here to help. Each intake period we have a limited number of 5 equity places available for eligible applicants to enrol in one unit. This gives you the opportunity to sit in on the Strategic Marketing class, for free, no obligations. Just soak up knowledge and learn. If you decide though after 5 weeks that you would like to participate in assessments, you can pay a $250 assessments fee. You may be granted a 3 week extension to complete your assessments at the discretion of the course co-ordinator. If later you decide to pursue an MBA with us and want to receive credit for the unit taken, a $750 credit fee will be payable

    Am I a domestic student?

You are considered a 'domestic' student if:

    You are an Australian citizen; You are a New Zealand citizen (or dual citizenship holders of either Australia or New Zealand); You are an Australian permanent resident; You are an Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder;

If you don’t hold one of the above visas or citizenships, you are considered as an international student.

TEQSA’s National Register shows that there are 2 Accredited Courses with the same name, in which course am I enrolling?

The courses on TEQSA’s National Register that are accredited with the same name indicate different versions of the same course. The course that is accredited to 2025 is the original version of the course which is now being taught out for those students who enrolled in the course prior to 2024 and have chosen to stay in that version of the course – there are no new enrolments into this version of the course from 2024 onward.

The course accredited to 2030 is the new version of the course for all new enrolments from 2024 and for those students from the previous offering who have chosen to transition to this version of the course.

What you can expect to study

The program structure is outlined in our handbook . Here you can view all of the subjects you will be studying.

This major equips graduates to work in the field of human resource management. Key functional areas are considered within a strategic and contextualised framework, with an underlying objective of searching for ways to strengthen organisations for all stakeholders. This education builds the necessary knowledge base for working in employment relations.

Developing innovation and entrepreneurial capability is essential for small, medium and large businesses. This specialisation introduces students to practical and applied knowledge supported by theory, concepts, frameworks for understanding and developing innovation and entrepreneurial thought, capability, infrastructure and platforms. Students will be exposed to leadership and approaches to the development of new products, services, processes and business models and introduced to ideation as an approach for developing ideas into possible innovative products, services, applications and processes. Students will be exposed to a variety of brainstorming, creativity and foresight methods and tools, with emphasis on scenario planning methods.

This major critically examines strategic management processes in various business, industry and economic contexts. It also explores the processes and challenges encountered by leaders in contemporary organisations, taking into account rapidly changing environments with a focus on quality management, risk management, and performance measurement and benchmarking. Students actively participate in experiential learning focussing on strategic leadership, visioning, situation analysis, objective setting and evaluation. Students apply current models and theories to solving industry-specific problems and scenarios.

This major is designed for an age of expanding communication networks, where marketing is increasingly seen as a highly skilled and complex profession. Whether designing or selling a product, communicating a government service, or raising awareness in the non-profit sector, marketing requires a broad understanding of its methodology, its tools, and broad communications and analysis skills.

This major combines subjects from urban management and planning to prepare students for careers in planning, place making and place management. Students can develop expertise in a range of areas related to planning and place, including: environmental regulation, finance, governance, health and wellbeing, heritage, planning philosophy, sustainability and urban design. Students who complete this major will be well positioned to contribute to development and management of sustainable places.

Students undertaking this major will gain skills and knowledge to act on sustainability and social responsibility issues in business recognising the need for financial and business solutions to maintain a competitive edge. Acting on these issues, students enhance critical thinking and problem solving skills, justifying solutions and aligning with the principles of UN SDGs for complex and challenging scenarios that also address social and environmental concerns. Through business projects and research tasks, students build ethical and responsible characteristics, create innovative strategy, and develop skills in judgement, scenario planning and creativity for business environmental management.

A revised program structure for the Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management commenced in 2021 as a result of a program review.

In addition to the structural changes, from 2021, the program name will change to the Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management (BTHEM).

What does this mean for you?

As a current student, you have the option to stay in the Bachelor of International, Hotel and Tourism Management program and continue to follow your current (pre-2021) program requirements (BIHTM), OR transfer to the new Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management (BTHEM) program and requirements to complete your study.

If you decide to change program, including to a BTHEM dual program, you will be required to follow the 2021 requirements.

Please be aware that if you are a Commonwealth Supported student changing program, Federal Government legislative changes may impact your fees. Refer to  my.UQ  for information.

Please read the information below carefully and consider the option that is best for you. If you decide you would like to change to the 2021  program and  requirements, you will need to submit a program change request on  mySI - net  by  12  February 2021 (program change requests will open  4  December 2020) .

The table below provides a basic summary of the changes. For a comprehensive comparison you need to review the requirements and course lists on Programs and Courses – see further information below under ‘What you need to do’.

In making a decision about which program requirements to follow, you need to consider the courses you have already completed, the major you wish to complete, as well as the courses you will be required to complete.  If you change to the 2021 program and requirements, course credit will only be given where it fits within the new requirements.

    Please note:

New/additional courses will be rolled out progressively over the coming years i.e. new core courses will be offered in 2021, but new major courses will not be offered for the first time until 2022, with some not being offered until 2023.

If you are intending to graduate in 2021, you will need to remain under your current (pre-2021) program and requirements.

If you wish to complete the Event Management, Hospitality Management and/or Tourism Management majors, you will need to remain under your current (pre-2021) program and requirements.

If you decide to change to the 2021 program and requirements to complete the Hotel and Hospitality Management major, your graduation will most likely be delayed until the end of 2022.

If you decide to change to the 2021 program and requirements to complete the Tourism and Event Management major, your graduation will most likely be delayed until the end of 2023.

    What you need to do

To help you understand the differences in requirements and courses that must be completed, we recommend you complete a  progression check  for each version of the requirements.  When completing the check, please remember to refer to the program requirements and course list for the appropriate year on the  Programs and Courses  website:

    BTHEM 2 021 requirements

    BIHTM 2 019-2020 requirements

BIHTM  Pre-2019 requirements  (only available to students who commenced in 2018 or prior)

To view the appropriate year on  Programs and Courses , select the relevant year from the drop down box next to ‘show information for’ in the top right hand corner of the page and click ‘change’, then select your program from the list.

If you decide you would like to change to the 2021 requirements, you will need to submit a program change request on  mySI - net  by  12  February 2021 (program change requests will open  4  December 2020) .

If you are remaining in your current program and therefore following requirements prior to 2021, please be aware there may be some changes to course offerings. Refer to our  changes to courses page  for further details.

Please rest assured we are committed to assisting you to progress through and successfully complete your program.

If you need further information or advice about these changes, please contact the BEL Student Administration Team at [email protected] .
