If we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that some of the best things are in our own backyards. For Americans, that includes Puerto Rico and the three major territories of the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix).

Although all of these places have great weather and beautiful beaches, each destination has its own distinct activities and attractions. Travelers can go bar hopping in Puerto Rico, diving in St. Croix, ziplining in St. Thomas, and hiking through the sprawling Virgin Islands National Park in St. John. (Cruisers visiting the Caribbean can even consider going beyond these destinations on a closed-loop cruise, which allows U.S. travelers to sail to some international destinations without a passport.)

1. Puerto Rico

Each year, Puerto Rico sees millions of visitors, and many head straight to San Juan , the island’s capital. No wonder: Colorful Old San Juan is home to the 16th-century Spanish colonial fortress Castillo San Cristobal and other UNESCO World Heritage sites , and fantastic restaurants like Santaella or La Casita Blanca, where the tostones and mofongo are not to be missed. For after-hours drinks, San Juan’s most popular bar La Factoria is a standout: The James Beard Award–nominee is a maze of six different themed bars and dance rooms. For more options, check out El Batey ’s laid-back dive bar ambience or the Mezzanine’s cocktails and fine wines served on cozy balconies overlooking Old San Juan.

There’s also lots to do outside the capital city. Consider renting a car and driving out to El Yunque , Puerto Rico’s tropical rain forest, or head south to hike the Guanica State Forest . Rincon, a town on the island’s west end, is a surfer’s paradise with smaller boutique hotels scattered along the coast—travelers can catch a wave or a gorgeous sunset on one of its beaches . To experience one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays, head to Laguna Grande in Fajardo, about an hour east from San Juan.

Located one hour from San Juan, El Pretexto is a mini farm and bed-and-breakfast tucked in the Cordillera Central mountains. The 2018-opened property offers bright and minimalist rooms alongside pop-up dinners, a wraparound deck, and a resident rooster named Santiago.

How to get to Puerto Rico

You can take an airplane or cruise ship to get to Puerto Rico. While the cruise ships stop at San Juan, there are plenty of direct nonstop flights from many hubs on the East Coast, including Hartford, Connecticut, and Tampa. There are even international nonstop routes from cities like Montreal and Frankfurt.

2. St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

Sandy Point is the island’s most attractive white-sand beach, but it’s only open on the weekends. It also closes from mid-April to August for nesting sea turtles, so consider yourself lucky if you get a chance to enjoy this two-mile stretch of paradise. Other good beach options include Buccaneer’s Beach and Rainbow Beach near Frederiksted. Only 28 miles long and 7 miles wide, St. Croix can also be explored by horseback or on an ATV or dune buggy. For water activities, Buck Island Reef National Monument is a top choice for snorkeling and diving, and St. Croix’s bioluminescent bay, Salt River Bay National Historical Park , is best experienced at night in a glass-bottom kayak.

St. Croix is also full of historical sites and has two major towns to explore. Christiansted is a harbor-front district where visitors can tour the St. George Village Botanical Garden. Frederiksted, on the west of the island, is a cruise port home to Fort Frederiksted , a Danish 18th-century fort, and the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts .

After working up an appetite, head to Le Reine Chicken Shack for rotisserie-style chicken and delicious johnnycakes, or visit Savant for seafood right off the boat in an intimate patio setting.

3. St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

For beaches, you can’t go wrong with the turquoise waters of Magen’s Bay or with Sapphire Beach, which has views of neighboring St. John. Take advantage of St. Thomas’s hilly terrain by hiking up to Drake’s Seat, a lookout spot that offers sweeping views of the Caribbean, or by ziplining at Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline Park . Culinary options on St. Thomas range from Duffy’s Loveshack , a lively watering hole in Red Hook, to Old Stone Farmhouse , an elegant restaurant with an extensive wine list.

There’s lots to do in St. Thomas’s capital, Charlotte Amalie: Visit the Frenchtown Brewing Company for a tour of the microbrewery and a beer flight with four seasonal brews. Next, climb the historic 99-step staircase (technically there are 103 steps) in the city for fantastic views. Finally, set aside an hour to two for a self-guided tour of Fort Christian . The red- and green-hued 300-year-old fortress is the oldest standing structure on the Virgin Islands and has served as a prison, government building, and a governor’s residence.

About 60 percent of the isle is a designated national park , and travelers flock to St. John for its green, rugged landscape. The relatively quiet island is ideal for travelers who truly want to unplug. Visitors head to Trunk Bay for its powdery white sand, and Cinnamon Bay is ideal for water activities like windsurfing, snorkeling, and kayaking.

St. John has a collection of restaurants sprinkled around Cruz Bay, the island’s main shopping and restaurant district. The Longboard is a bright and airy Caribbean cantina serving tacos, sushi wraps, poke bowls, and half-price drinks during happy hour. Skinny Legs Bar and Grill is a long-standing dive bar good for a burger and a cold beer, and one of the best dishes on the island is the clam chowder at Lime Inn.

My husband and I had cruise credit to use up and since we got the original vaccine from Pfizer, figured we would go ahead and try to use it. We had to do two COVID tests, one 48 hours before and one on the day of. Several ports turned us back for made up reasons (the cartel took over the town, it’s too dangerous!). And all of them required masks even outdoors in the blazing sun. Bahamas have armed police enforcing masks. Puerto Rico made the entire boat disembark and go through customs… it just felt hostile everywhere we went. Don’t recommend. I’m starting a travel blog also, just my personal experiences, if you would like to check it out, I would love that.

The USVI (U.S. Virgin Islands) are a U.S. territory, so U.S. citizens do not need a passport to visit, and this applies to every island in the territory ( St. Thomas , St. John, and St. Croix.)

Traveling to a U.S. territory from your home in the United States is exactly the same as driving from Portland to Seattle, or flying from New York City to Boston. As it's a U.S. territory, it's the United States, so you don't need a passport to enter. It's worth noting that while you're within the U.S. Virgin Islands, you're still within the United States' legal jurisdiction.

What Identification Is Needed in Order to Visit?

While you don't need a passport, you do require a form of identification, and you may wish to have a birth certificate to prove citizenship, as well. The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol says the following about documentation needed for travel to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands:

"Although U.S. citizens are not required to present a passport upon departure from the U.S. territories, travelers are encouraged to travel with a passport or other proof of citizenship, as they will be asked questions about citizenship and any goods they will be bringing to the U.S. mainland upon their departure from U.S. territories."

You don't need to apply for a passport in order to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, but it's probably easiest to take yours if you do have one. If not, take your driving license (and/or your birth certificate if you wish), and you'll be all good to go. 

Are There Any Exceptions?

Be careful with flight routings. If you're not going to be traveling with a passport, make sure that you buy a direct flight to the U.S. Virgin Islands or one that only passes through the U.S. or U.S. territories on a layover. If you were to buy a flight with a stopover in say, Costa Rica , you'll need to have your passport, as this would count as traveling internationally. In this case, you wouldn't be allowed to board the plane if you couldn't show your passport. 

Likewise, on your way home, if you were to book a flight that would stop over in Bermuda or Mexico (or any other international country), you would need to have a passport in order to board that flight. 

Who Needs a Passport to Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands? 

If you're from outside of the U.S., you'll want to make sure you've applied for a U.S. visa or ESTA before you book your flights. Keep in mind that you may have to also show an onward ticket (not a return ticket) to prove that you won't be staying in the country for longer than you are permitted.

Visa-free countries with Caribbean citizenship

As of April 2024, Caribbean passport holders can visit over 145 destinations without a visa, including the Schengen Area, Australia and Singapore.

The UK and China offer visa-free access to citizens of some Caribbean nations, such as Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada.

Caribbean passports vary in terms of travel freedom, with some offering more extensive visa-free access. Notably, the strongest passports in the region often come from countries with citizenship-by-investment programs. These include:

• Antigua and Barbuda  — 152 visa-free countries;
• Grenada  — 148 visa-free countries;
• St Lucia  — 147 visa-free countries;
• Dominica  — 145 visa-free countries.

The list of visa-free countries is broadly similar across these five passports. Caribbean citizens can typically enter popular tourist and business destinations without a visa. Key areas include the Schengen states, Australia, Singapore, India, and Brazil.

However, visa requirements do vary for certain destinations. A notable example is China, where only Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and Grenada passport holders can enjoy visa-free access for up to 30 days.

The accompanying map outlines all countries offering visa-free entry to Caribbean passport holders. It's important to note that the term "visa-free" here also encompasses destinations requiring an electronic travel authorization (eTA) or a visa upon arrival. These permits are generally quicker and simpler to obtain than traditional visas.

Visa requirements for Caribbean passport holders

Travelling to schengen countries with a caribbean passport.

Holders of Caribbean passports enjoy the benefit of visa-free access to the Schengen Area for short-term stays. They can stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period throughout the region. For example, if a traveller has spent 40 days in France and 20 days in Germany, they would be eligible for an additional 30 days in any other Schengen country.

Currently, Caribbean passport holders can enter any Schengen state without additional travel permits. However, from 2025, they must register with the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before travelling.

ETIAS is a travel authorization system designed for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen Area. The application process involves a fee of €7 and can be completed within a few minutes.

Visa-free entry to China

China is an attractive region in terms of culture and business. Citizens of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and Grenada are eligible for visa-free entry to China for tourism purposes for up to 30 days.

Passport holders from the three mentioned Caribbean countries are among the 40 nations who can visit China without a visa.

Crossing borders with a Caribbean passport

Passports from  Caribbean states are strong and allow holders to cross the  borders of more than 145 countries. 

Second citizenship is available in the following Caribbean countries : St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, St Lucia, Dominica, and Grenada . All five countries are members of the CARICOM regional organisation, which means their citizens receive Caribbean Community passports. These passports provide visa-free access to 15 member states , as well as to other countries around the globe. 

Investors can use a passport from one of these countries to cross certain borders, even if their first passport is weaker and has travel restrictions. For example, consider an investor with two passports: one from Egypt and the other from Grenada. Below are the steps dual nationals can take while travelling from Egypt to the Schengen Area, specifically to Germany.

Which passport should be used to buy plane tickets? To enter Germany, Egyptian citizens must first obtain a Schengen visa. To apply for this visa, they need to submit a package of documents, including a booked round-trip ticket, hotel reservation, and proof of funds. If the investor applies for a Schengen visa as an Egyptian citizen, they may be denied, losing time and money. 

Grenada citizens can enter the Schengen Area, including Germany, visa-free. If the investor buys plane tickets using their Caribbean passport from Grenada, they will get to Germany swiftly without spending time applying for a Schengen visa.

Which passport should be used for travel ? It is advisable to have all passports on one's person. Therefore, the investor should travel with both the Egyptian and Grenadian passports.

Which passport should be presented at the control while leaving Egypt? The investor exits Egypt with their Egyptian passport. 

Which passport should be presented while entering Germany? The investor should present their Caribbean passport from Grenada, as it equates to a Schengen visa and allows them to enter Germany. They also need to present their Grenada passport at the border of every other Schengen country should they travel within the Schengen Area.

Border authorities may inquire how the investor obtained a Caribbean passport. It is best to be truthful and state that they participated in the citizenship-by-investment program.

Which passport should be presented while returning to Egypt? The investor should enter Egypt with their Egyptian passport.

While all Caribbean passports facilitate visa-free travel to over 145 global destinations , access to certain countries varies based on the specific passport held. Unique travel opportunities exclusive to particular Caribbean passports include destinations such as Brazil, China, Russia, Argentina, and Chile.

A Caribbean passport can be advantageous even if it doesn't grant visa-free entry. It can facilitate the visa obtainment process, making it easier for the applicant.

Caribbean passport holders can apply for a US 10-year multiple-entry visitor visa for business and tourism purposes, a privilege not commonly extended to all nationalities. For comparison, citizens of Vietnam, for example, are typically limited to a 1-year visitor visa.

Caribbean nationals tend to experience higher US visa approval rates than many other countries. The rejection rates for Caribbean passport holders are relatively low, ranging from 14% to 25%. In contrast, applicants from countries like Georgia, Ukraine, and Moldova face rejection rates exceeding 40%.

How to obtain caribbean citizenship by investment.

An investor is the  primary applicant. Investors who apply for citizenship in any Caribbean country must be:

• in possession of sufficient funds to fulfil the investment pledge and cover the associated fees;
• without a criminal record;
• earning a legal income;
• in good health.

Family members can be added to the Caribbean citizenship program by the investor. Different Caribbean programs have varying requirements for family members, but all five countries permit adding:

• a spouse;  
• children under 18;
• disabled children of any age.

Family members added to a Caribbean program are referred to as dependents. As the name suggests, they must be financially dependent on the investor, and the investor covers their fees in the citizenship program.

Most Caribbean passports obtained through investment programs offer visa-free travel to the United Kingdom. This privilege extends to passports from Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Lucia. Citizens of these countries are permitted to stay in the UK without a visa for up to 180 consecutive days. 

Among the Caribbean countries, visa-free travel to the USA is available only to Bahamian passport holders , specifically when departing from Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. However, it’s important to note that entry to the USA is ultimately determined by Customs and Border Protection officials, who have the final say on eligibility at the border, and rejection remains a possibility.

Citizens of Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Lucia need a visa to enter the USA. They can obtain a multi-entry 10-year visitor visa for tourism and business purposes. Rejection rates for Caribbean citizens are relatively low.

It also allows for greater financial privacy and potential tax benefits, depending on the country.

8 Beautiful Places Where You Can Go Without a Passport

R ight now, there are unprecedented delays with the State Department issuing new passports and passport renewals , due to a bottleneck after pandemic shutdowns. With 500,000 weekly applications now rolling in, there's a huge backlog for passports. And if you're one of the unlucky Americans anxiously waiting for the State Department to catch up, you may be wondering what places you can travel to without a passport.

If you don't have a passport altogether, you're also not alone. In 2022, according to the State Department, there were 151,814,305 valid U.S. passports in circulation, while the U.S. population was 333,287,557—meaning approximately 55 percent of Americans don't have a passport.

Luckily, there are many exciting places in the U.S. that you can check off your travel bucket list without a passport or visa. America is home to adorably quirky small towns , beautiful national parks, and even gorgeous beaches —all reachable without a passport. And there are even U.S. islands and some territories, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, where you can visit without a passport.

It can get confusing, however, as there are also other U.S. territories, like Guam, where you do need a passport to visit. You may also have concerns about whether to bring a passport when it comes to closed-loop cruises, especially ones that dock in other countries like Canada and Mexico. After all, bringing a passport when you don't need it makes for just one more important thing you have to worry about losing. 

To help make your trip planning as stress-free as possible, we spoke with travel agents and citizenship advisors to better understand where exactly U.S. citizens can travel without a passport—and why it's smart to travel with one in certain circumstances.

Why Don't I Need a Passport to Travel to Certain Areas?

If you're traveling within the U.S. and certain territories, you may not need a passport, says Tonya Waite , travel agent and founder of Belle Vie Travel .

"This encompasses the familiar 50 states and the U.S. territories including destinations like Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands," Waite explains. Travel to these areas is considered domestic travel, similar to a flight from New York to Chicago.

As far as closed-loop cruises go (cruises that depart from the U.S. to Bermuda, Canada, Caribbean, and Mexico that end at the same port), Ilisa Oman , a travel agent at One World Family Travel , assures travelers that they don't need proof of passport because of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) . For this type of travel, a state-issued driver's license or ID is typically fine.

However, there are exceptions. Keep reading for specific identification requirements related to certain areas.

Where Can I Go Without a Passport?

U.s. territories.

With its stunning white sand beaches, snorkeling, and Danish colonial architecture, St. Thomas is beloved a Caribbean island. As a U.S. citizen, you don't need a passport to visit U.S. Virgin Islands, but you do need one to visit the British Virgin Islands. St. Thomas is located in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as Global Residence Index founder Mark Damsgaard notes, so you only need to present a government-issued ID with your photo.

Tropical paradise St. Croix also has pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and championship golf courses. And it's also another one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Thus, you're not required to bring a passport when traveling to and from the island, Damsgaard says.

The smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John boasts the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, which offers scuba diving, hiking, and prehistoric archaeological sites. Damsgaard notes that because St. John is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, you don't need a passport in order to travel there.

Northern Mariana Islands

The same rules apply to the Northern Mariana Islands, which consist of 14 tropical islands, with sandy shores and blue waters, and offer activities like windsurfing, cavern dives, and jungle treks. "U.S. citizens can visit the remote islands of the Northern Mariana Islands without a passport, but you need to have a government-issued proof of identification with you," Damsgaard explains.

Puerto Rico

An unincorporated U.S. territory, this Caribbean island features its sandy beaches, mountains, waterfalls , and the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. If you're a U.S. citizen traveling from anywhere within the U.S., then you don't need a passport, Damsgaard says. However, by May 2025, the Real ID Act will be in effect, he adds, "so if your state isn't compliant with this Act, you will need a passport to visit Puerto Rico."

You do need a passport to visit the westernmost territory of the U.S. "In general, Guam requires U.S. citizens to have a valid passport when entering the island," Damsgaard says. "On a case-by-case basis, you might only be required to have a valid proof of identification or citizenship." However, it's better to travel with one, just in case. And it is well worth it to explore its white-sand beaches, the culture of the local Chamorro people, and unique stone structures.

American Samoa

An unincorporated U.S. territory, American Samoa includes seven volcanic islands in the South Pacific. "The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) does not exercise jurisdiction over the islands," Damsgaard explains. So, you still need to have a passport when traveling to its islands.

Closed-Loop Cruise Destinations

The Bahamas

With 16 islands, the Bahamas feature both white and pink sand beaches, blue-green waters and coral reefs, and golf courses—making it a popular cruise destination. According to Nassau Paradise Island, an island in the Bahamas, those arriving to the Bahamas on a cruise ship that departs from U.S. soil may be able to provide WHTI documents instead of a passport. But travelers should confirm that before setting sail. Also, be careful of making sure your passport won't expire within six months of your departure.

The Central American country is home to unparalleled natural wonders, including hot springs, tropical rainforests, and one of the most important nesting spots for sea turtles. For cruises stopping in Costa Rica, as long as the cruise begins and ends at the same U.S. port, you don't need a passport to travel there, per CostaRicaCruises.com. You will, however, have to show proof of U.S. citizenship, which can be done with a government-issued ID with a photo or a certified copy of your birth certificate.

Turks and Caicos

An archipelago of 40 coral islands, Turks and Caicos is renowned for its gorgeous white sand beaches and luxury resorts. According to Travel Visa Pro, closed-loop cruise passengers can use WHTI documents in replace of a passport.

The British Virgin Islands

Part of a volcanic archipelago, the British Virgin Islands incorporates about 60 islands of varying sizes. If your cruise docks at the British Virgin Islands (BVIs), you will need to present a passport to enjoy the islands.

Cruises to Mexico highlight the country's tropical jungles, sandy shores, and ancient architecture. Similar to Costa Rica, you only need a government-issued ID with a photo or a certified copy of your birth certificate if traveling via a cruise ship that begins and ends on U.S. soil.

If you're headed to Canada on a cruise, you'll likely see beautiful natural scenery, charming shorelines, and world-class cities. The same identification requirements apply to closed-loop cruises that stop in Canada.

Within the U.S.

The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are a tiny collection of islands nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, about 120 miles off the tip of the state of Florida. The tropical destination is a southern extension of the state of Florida and home to Key West, an ultra-popular vacation spot in the spring and summer. Despite being super close to the Caribbean, U.S. citizens don't need a passport to travel there.

Hawaii is the only U.S. state that is both an archipelago and located in the tropics. And you don't need a passport to visit it and take in its gorgeous beaches, Polynesian culture, or epic natural wonders. However, similar to Puerto Rico, the state of Hawaii will be instituting the Real ID Act in May 2025, so be sure to obtain your Real ID by then.

The northernwest U.S. state, Alaska—with its snowy terrain, extraordinary wildlife, and famed dog sled races—might seem a world away from the continental U.S. Alaska is home to the country's largest national park (13 million-acre Wrangell-St. Elias) , highest peak ( 20,310-foot Denali) , and longest coastline, with 66,000 miles of Arctic and sub-Arctic shorelines.

But U.S. citizens only need a Real ID to travel to Alaska; a passport isn't required. The one caveat to this rule is if you're traveling to Alaska via Canada. Those driving to Alaska from Canada, taking a ferry, or with a layover in Canada, will need to bring a passport with them.

Can Americans go to Europe without a passport?

In short, the answer is no. Whether you're flying or setting sail, you will be prompted to show proof of passport identification upon arrival to a European border control officer. "Americans need a passport when traveling to Europe and the passport must be valid for at least three months prior to your departure from a European country," Damsgaard says.

For example, let's say you've had your passport for two months and three weeks. You will be allowed into the European country, but you will not be allowed back into the U.S. until you hit that three-month validation mark.

Should I bring my passport with me, even if I don't need to?

It's better safe than sorry, Damsgaard advises. "It's better to carry your passport with you even when your destination doesn't require it," he says out of caution.

Waite agrees, noting that traveling with a passport can serve as a valuable contingency plan. "Having a passport on hand can be highly beneficial in situations such as an unplanned layover in a foreign country or any unforeseen travel disruptions," she explains.

Can I use my birth certificate in place of a passport?

Very rarely does a birth certificate carry the same weight as a passport. "Your birth certificate isn't a substitute for a passport," Damsgaard warns. "You can only use it in place of a passport when you travel to other U.S. territories or closed-loop cruises, where you need a proof of identification and nationality."

That said, if you're traveling to an unfamiliar territory or are concerned about unplanned international affairs (like a flight change), Damsgaard highly recommends bringing a valid passport just to be safe. It's better to be prepared, especially if you're traveling solo or to a destination where you don't know anyone.

What happens if you travel without a passport?

Traveling domestically, including to U.S. territories, without a passport typically isn't an issue. It's traveling internationally without a passport when you start running into problems. If you travel without a passport to a country that requires proof of one, you likely will be denied entry, says Oman. Realistically, you probably won't even make it that far because security won't let you board the plane, or a ship if you're traveling by sea.

In terms of closed-loop cruises, you could get stranded in a foreign country, due to missing the ship or a medical emergency. In those cases, you will need to go to the nearest U.S. embassy and obtain an emergency passport to fly home. Oman warns that is an expensive and time-consuming process.

From Alaska's stunning arctic landscape to Puerto Rico's lush, tropical jungles and the pristine white sand beaches of St. Thomas, there are many beautiful and transportive places you can travel to without a passport as a U.S. citizen.

But while there are several places where you can go without one, it doesn't hurt to travel with a passport in the event of an emergency or unplanned travel disruption, such as a layover or flight cancellation. In any case, double check what identification documents are needed to enter the country you're visiting.

Greece adds 5 more islands to fast-track visa program for Turkish tourists

Greece has expanded its visa on arrival program , in which Turkish citizens can obtain a visa without the need to apply in advance, to simplify travel to five more Aegean islands .

The Greek Foreign Ministry announced that the fast-track program will be applied to Turkish counterparts on the islands of Symi, Kastelorizo, Icaria, Kalymnos and Limnos as of April 30.

Previously, the program encompassed the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Samos, Chios and Lesvos. Now, with Greece adding five islands to the list, the total number of islands offering fast-track visa options has increased to 10. Greek officials hinted at the potential for further expansion in the future.

Despite the announcement, initial demand for the new visas remained low due to short notice and limited ferry services. Some islands, like Simi and Limnos, lack established ferry routes from the Turkish coast, with service expected to begin June.

Lefteris Papakalodukas, the mayor of Simi, welcomed the new program but expressed reservations about its limitations. "The seven-day visa is a positive step, but it's not enough," he said. "Cultural and tourism exchanges foster good neighborly relations. Just as we can visit Türkiye with our IDs, Turks should be able to do the same in Greece."

"Many Turks visit Simi by boat 10-15 times a year," Papakalodukas explained. "The visa should be valid for a year, or at least the entire summer season."

Meanwhile, some 20,000 Turks traveled to five Greek islands in the Aegean Sea during the nine-day Eid al-Fitr break from April 6 to 14, after Greece launched the visa-on-arrival scheme for Turkish holidaymakers.
