The Top 9 Things to See and Do in Gangnam, Seoul

Laura Maniglier /

Gangnam literally means ‘south of the river,’ and this district in South Korea ’s capital lies along the banks of the Han, one of the country’s largest bodies of water. There’s plenty to do and see in this historically rich, fast-developing neighborhood. We explore some of the best things to do in South Korea.

Dance to 'gangnam style'.

Train Station

Right outside of Gangnam Station Exit 5 is a tribute to ‘Gangnam Style’ by PSY, once the most popular song in the world. ‘Gangnam Style’ received more than three billion views on YouTube , and that number is still rising. Here, tourists and locals can get on stage and record themselves dancing to ‘Gangnam Style’ while the music plays on loop in the background. A must-visit if you’re hitting this section of the capital. Take it up a notch by joining a Gangnam Style tour, which takes in the must-visit spots in the city for any K-Pop fan worth their salt.

Visit Bongeunsa

Buddhist Temple

Bongeunsa is a Buddhist Temple in the center of Gangnam. This is a display of Korea’s traditional past set right in the middle of a busy metropolitan area. You move from the hustle of the city to the serenity of the Buddhist mantras and peaceful landscape in just moments. There is even a temple stay that allows you to bed down at the Buddhist temple overnight to learn about Buddha’s teachings.

Gangnam is known as one of the richest districts in South Korea and is home to many department stores, underground shopping centers, and malls. This is where you would find Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Versace and other designer stores . Apgujeong and Cheongdam are the top shopping neighborhoods and there was even a television show, called Cheongdam Alice , about a poor girl wanting to get in with the wealthy elites of the area, spending time shopping and doing little else.

Samsung D’light

In case you didn’t know, Samsung is a Korean company (you can probably tell by the lack of iPhones owned in Korea). Samsung D’light is an exhibition space that showcases the latest technology founded by Samsung. It’s an excellent choice for electronic aficionados, as visitors are able to interact with some of the technology on display.

Visit SM, JYP, or CUBE

Gangnam is home to some of the largest Korean entertainment companies. Members of the public often go and visit the company headquarters and studios in the hopes of seeing a famous Korean idol walking or driving to and from the building. There are often large groups of fans and TV stations clustered around the entrances, which is something of a sight in itself.

Samneung Park

Samneung Park is full of history. It holds several tomb mounds, including the burial ground of King Jungjong. There are three tombs at this location: King Seongjong, the ninth king of the Joseon dynasty, his wife Queen Jeonghyeon, and King Jungjong, the 11th king of the Joseon dynasty. The surrounding forest brings a welcome change from the dense metropolitan area it is located in, making this a popular place just to take a stroll and relax. The tombs of the two kings are designated Unesco World Heritage sites , as are all those of the Joseon dynasty.

Seoul Olympic Park

Seoul Olympic Park is absolutely huge. It has seven different cafés, three restaurants, convenience stores, a K-pop museum, multiple fitness centers, basketball courts and skating arenas. The landscape is beautiful and serves as a great place to get away from all the cars and polluted air of the most crowded part of the city. There are bikes, kites, balls and skates, all of which visitors can rent at a low price, meaning any day here is packed with activities.

Things to do in Gangnam, Seoul

1. statue of gangnam style.

Fittingly, we start with the statue of Gangnam Style, a weird and wonderful Seoul attraction that is a bronze style sculpture located just outside the East Gate of COEX Mall and COEX exhibition centre.

And yes, we and several other bystanders during our visit felt it only appropriate to recreate Psy’s iconic dance in front of the giant pair of hands.

Statue of Gangnam Style Seoul South Korea

Unveiled in 2015, the Statue of Gangnam style is the ultimate tribute to Psy and his global ‘Gangnam Style’ hit (part of Psy’s Gangnam Style video was filmed in Gangnam). The song also plays from a speaker next to the statue.

Fact fans – Psy’s legendary dance moves were partly filmed outside exit 5 of Gangnam Station.

2. Starfield COEX Mall

For us, Starfield Mall is definitely one of our favourite shopping experiences in Seoul and this retail nirvana is one of the best shopping malls / centres in Seoul; especially due to the presence of the incredible Starfield Library in the centre of the complex (more on this later).

trip to korea gangnam

A good mix of fashion, culture, food and entertainment, Starfield COEX Mall is located over several levels and could easily be a day trip in itself if you take your shopping seriously. Flagship stores at Starfield Coex Mall include Zara, H&M and ABC Mart.

Starfield Mall has over 200 stores plus just under 100 eating establishments and dining options to choose from. What we really liked about Starfield COEX Mall is that they had clearly marked ‘food alleys’ on the map meaning you could easily find something to eat.

3. Bongeunsa temple

Easily one of the most beautiful temples in Seoul, Bongeunsa is a Buddhist temple that originally dates from the 8th century – although most of the current site dates back from the 20th century as much of it was destroyed during the wars.

It has a huge complex of memorials, places to worship plus even has its own home stay in a temple scheme.

Bongeunsa temple Gangnam Seoul South Korea

Bongeunsa temple is free to visit (donations are appreciated) and we were blown away by how big this place of worship is.

One of the many highlights was the serene hillside location whereby  a huge 100ft stone statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha looks out over Gangnam-su.

Just below it, there is a square with thousands of smaller versions of the Buddha; an incredible site.

4. K Star Road (AKA GangnamDol bears)

A complete contrast to the aforementioned serene Bongeunsa temple, one of the most frequently visited things to do in Gangnam are the brightly coloured K-pop bears of K Star Road.

K Star Road Psy (AKA Gangnam Dol bears) Seoul South Korea

These ‘GangnamDols’ (brightly coloured bear dolls) line a 1 km stretch of road with around 20 big bears representing the cream of K-pop talent and famous K-pop dolls.

As you’d expect, the ‘star’ of K Star Road is a huge Psy bear / GangnamDol (near Apgujeong Rodeo Station exit 2), but other bears include Girl’s Generation , Miss A and 4Minute – and yes, the BTS Gangnam-su bear is incredibly popular.

5. Garosu-gil shopping street

Garosu-gil is a tree-lined avenue in Gangnam renowned for its shopping and retail stores, which has Gingko trees dotted along the street that bloom into bright colours during the Autumn months.

Along Garousil gil, you’ll find a raft of retail and international clothing chains like Levis and Arket , plus iconic global brands like Apple (the Apple store in Gangnam is one of the biggest in South Korea).

Garosu-gil shopping street Gangnam, Seoul

You’ll also fine lots of nice cafes and gourmet goodie shops along here – look out for the gorgeous ‘gift-wrapped’ Godiva Gangnam chocolate store along here.

This has led to Garosu-gil street becoming one of the most popular daytime activities in Gangnam as well as a popular filming location for Korean TV series and teen dramas.

Given the aesthetics and design led nature of the businesses in and around Gangnam’s Garosu-gil street, it also goes by the local nickname of ‘Artist’s Street’.

6. Cute character stores galore in Gangnam

If you like your cartoon characters charming and cutesy, one of the best things to do in Gangnam is to visit the plethora of character shops.

The best known of these in Gangnam is the Line Friends Flagship Store where you can create your own merchandise as well as pose with your favourite friends.

Line Friends Gangnam Store Seoul South Korea

Whilst in Gangnam, we also visited the Kakao Friends Gangnam Flagship Store, another famous chain of stores in Seoul that feature ever so cute and fluffy adorable animals across a variety of merchandise.

7. Starfield Library at COEX Mall (our favourite thing to do in Gangnam)

As well as shopping at Starfield COEX Mall, you’ll also see Starfield Library, one of the most memorable and aesthetically pleasing spaces we’ve ever encountered in a Seoul shopping mall.

Surely this has to be the best looking and most accessible library in the world? So much so that it can be hard to get a book from the shelves with all the posing and photography going on (for real).

Starfield Library at COEX Mall Seoul South Korea

Unlike other libraries, you don’t need to be a registered user to read the books, and several cafes and coffee shops are ‘hidden’ amongst the gigantic bookshelves.

9. Apgujeong Rodeo Street / Cheongdam Fashion Street

A firm fashion favourite on the Seoul shopping scene, Apgujeong Rodeo Street is a trendy treasure trove of boutique stores and bling (putting the ‘style’ into ‘Gangnam style’).

It is also signposted by a ‘I <heart> Rodeo’ golden statue man (they love interesting statues in Gangnam, eh).

Apgujeong Rodeo Street / Cheongdam Fashion Street Gangnam Seoul South Korea

As well as independent and artisan stores, you’ll find the famous Galleria Department Store and iconic luxury brands like Prada , Gucci and Armani.

We were surprised too by the sheer number of luxury sports cars and cabriolet cars driving along Apgujeong Rodeo Street when we visited; kinda reminiscent of Knightsbridge in London.

10. Lotte World

What a Lotte fun! One of Seoul’s largest theme parks and Disney-esqe in style, Lotte World is on the outskirts of Gangnam and well worth a visit.

With a huge indoor amusement centre and outdoor Magic Island, Lotte World is fun for all ages and also includes various entertainment like daily parades and live music shows.

We once visited Lotte World in December and so much of the park was themed with Christmas activities ( read more about Seoul Christmas lights and Christmas events ).

Lotte World Gangnam Seoul South korea

Note that Lotte World gets incredibly busy after school with students visiting in large groups making some of the ride queue times hours long – so try and arrive at Lotte World early to tackle the bigger rides.

11. Megabox Cinema Gangnam

The best place to catch the latest South Korean movie or Hollywood thriller is at the Megabox Cinema in Gangnam, located in the basement area of COEX Mall.

Get high in Gangnam – well, kind of, Lotte World Tower is the tallest tower in South Korea (and the sixth tallest in the world). It opened to great fanfare in 2017 and offers incredible panoramic views of the Seoul skyline.

Seoul Sky Observatory at Lotte World Tower

The observation deck area is called ‘Seoul Sky’ which is spread across several floors (levels 117 to 123). At the tip, you’ll find a glass floor walkway (not for the faint hearted), plus a posh lounge,  a couple of cafes and a sky terrace.

Lotte World Tower is open daily from 10.30am until 10pm (last admission to Seoul Sky is at 9pm).

Discounted Lotte World Tower tickets can be bought in advance from Klook >

13. BTS Cafe – Yoojung Sikdang

The beloved BTS cafe in Gangnam where the K-Pop band used to dine before they were superstars, Yoojung Sikdang has now become the ultimate K-Pop pilgrimage in Seoul (and tasty too).

Yoojung Sikdang a cosy cafe located in Gangnam’s sidestreets which is literally covered in posters and BTS merchandise – like there isn’t a single surface spared.

BTS Cafe - Yoojung Sikdang Gangnam Seoul

We visited Yoojung Sikdang one weekday lunch-time, and even managed to sit in BTS’s favourite table!

Busy with locals and international tourists of all ages, the food here was good and still very reasonably priced (the bibimbap was particularly good).

The BTS boys have been back here several times since to film videos or segments – so who knows when BTS might pop up?

Craft Beer Bars in Gangnam

Seoul is renowned for its craft beer bars and is one of the best things to do in Gangnam is to grab a pint of beer direct from a brewery or taproom. This could also be a nice way to reward yourself after a hard day’s shopping.

Here are 3 of Gangnam’s best craft beer brewery bars:

14. Mikkeller Bar

Mikkeller is a popular Danish brewery that has taprooms located all over the world, including a South Korean outpost in Seoul.

trip to korea gangnam

Hidden away in a side-street of the Garuso Street neighbourhood in Gangnam, Mikkeller Bar Seoul is a bare bones taproom with a large bar up front, bay windows looking out onto the street and several character illustrations dotted around the wall.

Boasting up to 30 craft beer tap lines at any one time, half of the fun with drinking Mikkeller Beer is the cartoon style can and bottle designs – this quirky look is also carried through onto their pint glasses.

15. Garosu Brewing

Hidden away in the side streets of Sinsa-dong, Garosu Brewing has a beer garden and taproom with their own range of core craft as well as craft beers from all over the world. The brewing action takes place right next door (smell the hops!).

Based on our experience, Garosu Brewing Company seems to be the cheapest craft beer brewery in Seoul with a 14oz Garosu G Porter costing just 5,000 Won.

trip to korea gangnam

16. Artmonster

How best to describe Artmonster Gangnam? A neon nirvana of brightly lit signs, copious craft beer and self pour technology – perhaps the Bladerunner of breweries in Seoul?

trip to korea gangnam

Artmonster Gangnam is an appealing and aesthetically interesting bar in Gangnam. Your experience begins as you first enter via the alley way out front chock full of Hong Kong style neon street signs to entice you in.

In fact, Artmonster Gangnam, has featured in multiple music videos, dramas and TV chat shows (we know as they show a video of all its TV appearances on loop in the upstairs bar).

trip to korea gangnam

Thankfully it isn’t just style over substance as Artmonster’s beer range delivers, with a veritable treasure trove of beer styles, both their core range and seasonal offerings and collaborations.

Best of all, you can pour beers yourself using a smart bit of technology. As you are seated, you are given an electronic wristband which you can use to pour your own drinks.

17. Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong Main Store

Giving off Roman Colosseum vibes from its exterior (check out the arch main entrance), the Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong Main Store is a mainstay of shopping in the Gangnam neighbourhood and one of the biggest malls here.

Based across seven floors (with restaurants on the 6th floor and a Sky Garden on the top floor), luxury boutiques located in Gangnam’s Hyundai store include Gucci , Chanel , Hermes and Tiffany & Co .

18. Catch a baseball game

South Korea’s most popular sport is baseball so after a day of exploring Gangnam, why not catch a game of baseball at the Jamsil baseball ground.

The baseball season in South Korea runs approximately from April to September every year and Seoul is fortunate enough to have two home baseball teams – the Doosan Bears and the LG Twins. There will often be several baseball games a week played at Jamsil stadium (it is a huge stadium, holding 25,000 spectators).

Seoul baseball game Jamsil stadium Doosan Bears

You may ask – ‘How do I get baseball tickets in Seoul If I’m visiting from overseas? It is actually surprisingly easy.

We went to the Jamsil baseball stadium one week night in summer 2023 and bought tickets from the box office just before the baseball game started – the Jamsil stadium box office for baseball tickets opens 90 minutes before the game.

Foreigners can buy Seoul baseball tickets at Jamsil stadium for as little as 13,000 Won (around £8 / $10 USD).

We went to see the Doosan Bears take on the Samsung Lions at Jamsil Stadium and bought tickets on the gate for 13,000 Won sitting in the navy section – such incredible value and one of the cheapest activities and things to do in the Gangnam area of Seoul.

19. GOTO Mall Underground Shopping Mall

One of the largest underground shopping centers in Seoul , GOTO mall is an underground shopping centre and a hive of hundreds of subterranean stalls located in the basement of Express Bus Terminal Station.

Packed with shoppers every day of the week, GOTO mall is the place to goto (ahem!) for cheap clothes or ‘bags’ of inexpensive accessories, luggage and backpacks.

Gotomall Underground Shopping Mall Gangnam

Also referred to as ‘Gangnam Terminal Underground Shopping Center’, there are around 600 stores spread out over two parallel corridors.

When we visited GOTO mall, we were surprised at how busy it was; people were literally fighting over half price hats and the like.

20. Naduke Sinsa Gangnam

Gangnam’s Naduke Sinsa dessert place is likely the craziest / cutest croissant shop you’ll ever come across.

Join the eager queue outside before being let in by staff wearing baguette trousers and look in awe at the huge giant croissant that greets you inside (talk about an Instagram moment).

Naduke Sinsa Gangnam

Naduke is a patisserie and coffee shop from Gentle Monster, famed for their fabulous flaky creations like onigiri style cream croissants (Oniwassants). The croissant theming continues throughout, something we’d describe as pastry pastiche.

Fun but also incredibly tasty, other signature creations at Naduke Sinsa Gangnam include a Croitteok (a croissant hotteok mix) and the epic (and expensive) Peak Cake (squid ink and matcha mix dessert). Go for the experience, stay for the oh la la Oniwassants.

Naduke Sinsa Gangnam

21. Maison Kitsuné Cafe and Clothing Shop

Hidden in the back-streets of Gangnam down an unassuming leafy lane-way, one of the best looking clothing shops with an equally gorgeous cafe is Maison Kitsuné – where coffee meets couture!

Maison Kitsuné Cafe and Clothing Shop Gangnam Seoul

A cute cafe is located on the ground floor as you enter, with views of a wooded courtyard (lit up by fairy lights at night). Maison Kitsuné’s fine ‘foxy’ fashion can be found on the upper level and in another studio downstairs next to the cafe.

Maison Kitsuné is a French-Japanese lifestyle brand that has branches in several countries plus also runs a record label – so a suitable set up for some real ‘Gangnam style’ shopping and sweet treats.

22. Gangnam Korean Photo Booths

Selfie booths and Korean photo booths are a super big business in Korea…one of the newest things to do in Gangnam (and most popular) which seems to have cropped up a lot more in recent years, to easily replace shops and restaurants that closed down during COVID-19.

The selfie kiosks in Gangnam are generally located around the West Gangnam neighbourhood.

Gangnam Selfie Photo Photos / Korean Selfie Booths

The Korean photo booths are usually brightly painted with enticing neon signs and are often unmanned. Once inside, you can borrow clothes and all sorts of fun props and then pose for selfies or take photos in booths for a small fee (using an electronic kiosk).

Often the photo booths in these selfie booths in Gangnam allow you to print out stickers as a souvenir to take home or share with friends. We noticed how popular selfies booths are in Myeongdong too (plus super popular in Ximending, Taiwan too).

Gangnam Selfie Photo Photos / Korean Selfie Booths

Some of the most popular booths in the West Gangnam area are Photoism, Photo drink and Photomatic. We also spotted a few limited edition photo booths on our last visit to Gangnam.

For instance, there was a limited edition pop up ‘Slam Dunk’ photo-booth with a high queue lining up to use the booth (where you could pose in a kiosk and add the Slam Dunk comic book character).

Gangnam never fails to surprise us in terms of how extravagant and epic some of the fashion stores are – this is proven none more so than at the Gentle Monster Gangnam Flagship Store Sinsa which is part art gallery, part glasses and optical wear shop.

Gentle Monster Gangnam Flagship Store Sinsa

Most of the Gentle Monster Gangnam shop interior is white in colour and each floor has a centrepiece installation that the eye is drawn – for instance, there is a literal ‘elephant in the room’ on the first floor.

Yes, Gentle Monster in Gangnam has a huge upside down model elephant hanging from a harness next to some Roman columns – not your typical eyewear store.

Gentle Monster is one of the best known Korean optical brands famed for its oversized glasses with low bridge noses which help create a smaller face effect. Gentle Monster glasses are often worn by K Pop artists and Korean celebrities.

24. Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul

Even if you aren’t into your sport cars or classic cabriolets, Hyundai Motorsport Museum in Gangnam is well worth a visit – old and new Hyundai cars are on display over several floors with free admission.

Hyundai Motorstudio Gangnam Seoul

The staff here are very warm and welcoming and greeted us in perfect English explaining about the history of Hyundai.

They led us over to the Hyundai PONY car on the ground floor, explaining how it was this car that took Hyundai onto the world-stage and became so popular in Korea in the 70s and 80s.

You are free to wander between floors admiring the cars – it is also their flagship Hyundai showroom in Seoul so you can view the latest models (and potentially buy one if you are feeling flush!)

C27’s Cheesecake flavours include triple vanilla cheese, wild strawberry, dutch apple and tiramisu – you can buy individual cheese-cake slices to enjoy with your coffee or to takeaway as a decadent dessert to enjoy at home.

As you might expect from somewhere called C27 Cheesecake and Coffee, their signature hot drink is a cheese latte – you’d better brie-leave it!

This street would also appeal to all the fashion lovers out there. Cheongdam Fashion Lane, popularly known as ‘Celebrity Street,’ has the major luxury brands in one place, all coordinated so you can access them in one place.

While the street is popular for such brands, however, those are the only items Cheongdam has to sell. Interesting beauty and hair salons – offering ‘Korean’ makeovers – as well as trendy restaurants and cafes scattered throughout the street.

Although the earlier conditions in today’s world can practically not be replicated, the path sort of lives as a tribute to the early nineties.

The architecture alone will draw you in, and the fashion will keep you shopping.

However, shopping for designer brands isn’t the only thing you can do. You can also visit the elite restaurants and cafes around the area.

It’s nicknamed the ‘Celebrity Street’ since celebrities shop there, and locals and tourists come out feeling like they’re celebrities too.

trip to korea gangnam

After shopping and hitting the books, your next stop is the Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사) to give yourself a taste of Korean culture.

Bongeunsa is a Buddhist temple, and the name Bongeunsa translates to ‘Offering Mercy Temple’.

Back in the year 794, the Bongeunsa was established under the name Gyeonseongsa (견성사). This was during the Shilla dynasty.

Most temples are on mountains, but the Bongeunsa is different. Bongeunsa is on the ground near the COEX Mall’s northern side.

The temple’s statue of Budda is 23 meters high, and people are seen taking pictures of or praying to it.

As for the temple itself, you can stay overnight and learn more about the culture and history residing inside. It’s a nice break from the shopping of Gangnam, and it immerses you in history.

Samsung D’Light

Did you know that Samsung (삼성) originated in South Korea? To show off their technological achievements, Samsung has the Samsung D’light located in Gangnam. It’s a fun activity that gets you away from the streets and instead into the growth of South Korea.

The Samsung D’light is a wonderful spot if you love Samsung products.

It’s inside the Samsung headquarters, and it’s an exhibition center displaying the newest Samsung products including phones, TVs, and other electronics you may be craving to buy.

D’light comes from two words: digital and light.

Combining the two brings D’light to life. Samsung chose this name to be symbolic for how they’re bringing light into the digital world with their technology.

The exhibit proves this is true by showing off the new and old tech.

On the first floor, you’ll find exhibits and interactive opportunities.

You can go through the old and current technology and test it out, and if you like it, you can buy Samsung products in the retail store on the lower floor.

The second floor is where the new technology comes into play. Samsung’s future plans are demonstrated on the second floor.

This includes, but isn’t limited to: new technology, education, and healthcare.

Starfield COEX Mall

trip to korea gangnam

Shopping, shopping, and more shopping. When in Gangnam, why not shop til’ you drop? The Starfield COEX Mall (스타필드 코엑스몰), or COEX Mall for short, is an underground mall located at the Korea World Trade Center.

You can even book tours of the place in advance.

The COEX Mall is home to many events and stores. Not only can you shop, but you can attend the activities that go on there both during the week and on weekends.

For example, some events are as follows: Korean vegan fair, cosmetic exhibitions, and automotive expos.

However, what it’s most known for is shopping. It’s an underground mall, and it’s also the largest underground shopping center in all of Asia.

There’s plenty of Korean cuisine there, and there’s even a museum featuring a popular Korean food : kimchi.

It’s gigantic and has the following: international brands, retail, food courts, a movie theatre, restaurants, an arcade, a kimchi museum, an aquarium, and a concert hall. Since it’s so popular, prepare to wait in line for long periods of time. Especially at the aquarium and museum.

The museum is a unique attraction that’s exactly what it sounds like: a home for all you need to know about kimchi .

At the kimchi museum, you’ll learn about kimchi and the different ways to make it, and you can even participate in kimchi-related activities.

What Gangnam Is Known For

It would be impossible to mention the impact of Gangnam without stating how luxurious it is. Gangnam is known for being one of South Korea’s richest districts.

Even apartments are expensive with average prices being 300,000 won ($265.60) per month.

Gangnam is the third largest district in Seoul, and tourists go to immerse themselves in an upscale livelihood.

30+ FUN Things to do in Gangnam in 2023

Things to do in Gangnam

Last Updated on November 17, 2023 by Ingrid & Alex

If you had asked me what are the best things to do in Gangnam after my visit as a tourist, I would have probably thought of a couple of things. However, after living in Seoul for one year, I came to understand that Koreans see Gangnam as a whole region, not only a district.

Gangnam-gu (district) became famous thanks to PSY, the Korean artist who broke YouTube with his video back in 2012. Nevertheless, if you ask anyone in Seoul what to do in Gangnam they would think of the whole area south of the Han River. That’s because “Gangnam” literally means “south of the river”.

For the sake of this post, I will try to focus mostly on the things to do and see in the district. But I cannot leave out areas such as Jamsil or Songpa. Because these places are south of the river, and extremely close to Gangnam district.

Thus, without further ado, here is everything I enjoyed doing on a day or so south of the river in Seoul.

Where to stay in Gangnam

Getting from incheon to gangnam, do you need a visa for south korea, getting around seoul.

Coex Mall Library Gangnam

One of the main Instagram spots in Gangnam and in Seoul, this public library is incredibly photogenic. The thing is, the place has been built inside of the COEX mall with precisely this in mind: attracting people to the shopping mall.

You cannot actually borrow or buy books, and even if you could, they are all in Korean. However, you can enjoy the atmosphere and read or simply look at the pictures inside the magazines.

And while you are here, why not allow yourself to get lost inside this impressive shopping mall, who knows what you might find?

Or better yet, head for the next thing on the list.

Address : 513 Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

The largest aquarium in South Korea is hosted inside a shopping mall! Hosting around 40.000 sea creatures, this is the place to be for kids and adults alike. Why not spend a few fun hours learning about the incredible life of underwater creatures?

You’ll get to see sharks, penguins, a “mermaid performance” and much more.

By booking online you will not only save on the price ticket, but you will also have the flexibility to cancel or change your booking.

You can use it with the Discover Seoul Pass , or book it separately.

Have tea at Bongeunsa Temple

Bongeunsa Temple Seoul

Bongeunsa Temple is set within walking distance of the COEX mall and it is one of the few Buddhist temples inside Seoul. In the past, many temples have been moved outside of the city, especially to the mountains, but Bongeunsa has fortunately survived.

Visiting this temple has been one of my favorite things to do in Seoul and I loved it, especially when it was covered with colorful lampions.

Bongeunsa temple lampions

Another reason why I love going there is because of its small tea house hosted inside one of the small temple houses. The interior is stunning, the views are beautiful, and you can enjoy a true Korean-style tea ceremony here.

During my first trip to Seoul, some ladies also offered me some traditional sweets while visiting the temple. For those interested in such activities, Bongeunsa also hosts Templestays where you can stay and sleep inside the temple, learn about the Buddhist religion and live like a monk.

Come during spring or summer and you will get to enjoy the true beauty of the temple’s gardens.

Things to do in Gangnam

Set outside of COEX Mall, this impressive display attracts not only tourists but also locals, especially during football competitions.

The display changes every now and then, depending on the season and what’s cool at the time, but you will get to see not only K-Pop idols but also things that offer optical illusions such as waves hitting the screen.

Some time ago “the wave” went viral on social media and they keep resurrecting it so you might be lucky to catch it on display.

Samsung Display in Gangnam

Located right in front of Coex Mall, you should not miss the opportunity to take a picture with the famous Gangnam Style statue.

Address : 524 Bongeunsa-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Korean bbq in Seoul

One of our local friends took us to this restaurant for our first Korean BBQ after moving to Seoul. They served Jeju black pig and everything was delicious.

Address : 14 Bongeunsa-ro 86-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Sulwhasoo Flagship store Gangnam

Who doesn’t like a little pampering, especially when it is done in the world’s beauty capital?

Sulwhasoo is one of the main luxury k-beauty brands with its main ginseng line targeting anti-aging and revitalization.

At their flagship store and SPA in Gangnam, you will find an impressive place where you can learn about the history of Korean beauty, shop for some of the best cosmetics, and pamper with exclusive SPA treatment.

The building also has a rooftop terrace where you can sit back and relax. Book your treatment in advance and come in earlier when you want to make the best out of your time here.

Address : 18 Dosan-daero 45-gil, Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Have a coffee at one of the cool cafes around Dosan Park

trip to korea gangnam

Right next to Sulwhasoo SPA, you will find Dosan Park, a small green oasis in the middle of one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Seoul.

On the streets around the park, you will discover tons of cool cafes to choose from. Some have a more girly style, others are hipster heaven, while others care only for the coffee they serve.

Inside the Dear Dahlia flagship store, you will find one of the girliest cafes, while if you walk towards Gangnam station you will find more low-key cafes.

Here are a few of the prettiest and most popular cafes around Gangnam:

Antique Songpa

Antique Coffee – set in a pastel house, with the Lotte Sky Tower in the background, they have a beautiful flower display and Instagrammable cakes. It is located in Songpa-dong ( 송파동).

Address : South Korea, 서울 Songpa-gu, Baekjegobun-ro 41-gil, 21-16 KR 서울특별시 1층

Mammamia 도산 – has been around for a while and it is still one of the most popular cafes in Gangnam (and Seoul). The pink exterior attracts picture lovers, while their sweets look mouthwatering. It is on a street right next to Dosan Park. Address : 45 Apgujeong-ro 42-gil, Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Hermes Cafe – it is set inside the Hermes store in Gangnam, right across the street from Dosan Park. From my experience at the Dior Cafe (also in the area), going there is more about taking pictures than actually tasting the coffee and food.

Address : 7 Dosan-daero 45-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

trip to korea gangnam

Even window shopping around Garosu-gil or Apgujeong Rodeo Street is an experience you should not skip. This is the area where you will find all the fancy stores, and big luxury brands, but also smaller and cooler local shops.

If you don’t feel like shopping at Chanel, Hermes, Dior, or brands of this kind, only a few minutes away you will find colorful k-beauty stores or unique local brands such as Ader – a clothing store with an out-of-this-world interior design.

trip to korea gangnam

No matter what you are into and no matter your budget for shopping, you should allow yourself to get lost in this area for at least a few hours.

Dior Cafe Seoul Gangnam

To be honest, before finding this place I had no idea Dior had also cafes, and I honestly thought this is a Seoul thing. However, I later found out you can enjoy a coffee with the famous fashion brand logo in other capitals around the world, but since you will be in Seoul, why not try the one in Gangnam?

The cafe is set on the last floor of a building, on top of the actual Dior store. If you go during the week, chances are you won’t need a reservation because at the time we were there most tables were empty, but people started to come towards lunchtime.

In my humble opinion, as a “coffee snob”, their coffee was one of the worst I’ve ever had, especially when you think about the price tag. However, I would rather suggest you come here for afternoon tea, it might be better and more worth it.

All-in-all the experience is something worth considering, especially for the ‘gram.

Everywhere you look around Gangnam Station and on Teheran Street, you will see countless plastic surgery clinics. During normal times, in this area, you would see people wearing bandages entering or exiting these buildings.

If you didn’t know, South Korea is the number 1 country for plastic surgery, and Gangnam is the Silicon Valley of Seoul’s beauty industry.

There are even clinics that offer special packages for foreigners, for an intense 1-2-3 days of rejuvenation. While most doctors don’t speak English, many such clinics have translators that will guide you through the whole process.

Save on your Seoul vacation

With the  Go City Explore Seoul Pass  you not only save on your trip, but you also have the flexibility to organize your vacation as you want to.

You can choose between the  All-Inclusive Pass  – designed for  1,   2, 3, 4 or 5-days  in Seoul; or the  Explorer Pass  – and get to choose between  3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 attractions on a pass – you choose your activities and have 60 days to use them.

Dear Klairs is set in a small building with a charming and tranquil interior design. You will be able to try some of their most popular products, take advantage of the offers, and get free samples.

Han River divided the city into 2 parts, and the whole area along the river, on both of its banks, is transformed into a park.

Bicycle lanes go along pedestrian lanes, and you can basically walk (or bike) from one end to the other of the city.

The Gangnam area is also pretty nice because you will get a beautiful view over Namsan Tower and Hannam-Dong with its colorful buildings perched on the hill.

You can grab a drink from one of the convenience stores along the river and bring a blanket to sit on the grass and enjoy a beautiful sunny day.

Lotte World Seoul

Set in the middle of Seokchon Lake next to the famous Lotte World Tower, Lotte World is the most popular adventure park in South Korea.

No matter if you are traveling with kids or you simply want to feel like a child again, spending one day at the amusement park should be on your Seoul bucket list. Or go there at night for a great show and view.

Lotte World Seoul

Choose a Fast Pass when you don’t want to wait in line at any of the rides, or get the combo ticket and visit the Aquarium as well.

Address : 240 Olympic-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Lotte Sky Tower

This is South Korea’s tallest building, one that can be seen from almost any point in Seoul. You can climb all the way to the highest floors and admire the city from the top of its 117th to 123rd floors.

Every now and then there is a special exhibition organized inside, and they do hold various Korean entertainment programs.

The building has one of the fastest elevators in the world, and you will be surprised how fast you will get to the top of Seoul.

Address : 300 Olympic-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Tree in Olympic Park Seoul

Within walking distance to Lotte World and Lotte Sky Tower, you can get to one of the most beautiful parks in Seoul: Olympic Park.

People usually come here looking for the most photogenic tree in the city, but even a stroll along the beautiful lanes would be worth it.

Particularly if you are visiting the city during spring or fall , Olympic Park should not be missed.

Address : 424 Olympic-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea

While I’m not a huge Starbucks fan (let’s say I like other types of coffee), I couldn’t skip this cool place set on the Han River.

Seoul Wave is a relatively new addition to the river and to the list of Instagrammable places in Seoul, and it can be easily reached from Gangnam.

The building doesn’t only host the cafe, but it also has yoga studios and other cool places. However, Starbucks coffee is the most popular place inside the building, mainly because of the beautiful view you get from the inside.

trip to korea gangnam

It is not a large space so if you are going during the weekend you might find it difficult to find a table on the ground floor.

Address : 145-35 Jamwon-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul, South Korea

If you would rather see the city from the river, especially during and after sunset, a river cruise is a great idea. The city will shine bright and you will even see the colorful Bampo Bridge.

When you book a tour, once the cruise is over, the guide will take you to one of the most popular local markets where you will get to taste some delicious local dishes. You will feel like part of that popular Netflix show!

Another tour option would take you for a picnic in Hangang Park, where you will taste traditional Korean fried chicken and a local rice liquor called Makgeolli.

Yes, the “Gangnam Style” was about partying like the people in this district do. You will find here some of the coolest and most exclusive restaurants and bars in town, where people come to have fun (and of course, to show off).

June, a local historian will take you around Gangnam and help you understand why Korea has today the highest suicide rate, the lowest birthrate, intense education, what lies behind the plastic surgery culture, and more.

He chose Gangnam because this is the most developed part of the city (and country), but a symbol for the “unhappiest country in the world”.

You might not come all the way to Seoul to have your hair done, but once you know about this option, you might consider it.

Jenny House styles over 500 celebrities and is located in the heart of the Gangnam district. If you want to take advantage of discounts, I strongly encourage you to book online, ahead of time.

An English-speaking guide and translator will take you to some of the most famous beauty clinics in Gangnam.

She will help you better understand beauty procedure options, have consultations with specialists, and finish your tour with a beauty plan.

I know from experience it is almost impossible to really have a consultation in English in Gangnam, so if this is on your list, a guide is worth paying for.

Cherry blossom Seokchon Lake

Of course, you can go there anytime, but the lake is surrounded by cherry trees making it a scenic walk, especially during those two seasons.

Address : 잠실6동 Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea

The two huge shopping malls are right next to one another and you can choose the one you want to explore depending on your budget.

Also, come here for the Instagrammable stairs in the Lotte Department Store, or their stunning Christmas displays during winter.

Banpo Bridge & lights

People gather on the Han River’s banks to watch the show of lights, colors, and water at Banpo Bridge.

Address : South Korea, Seoul, Seocho-gu, 반포2동

Go for a stroll and see the Seolleung (Tomb of King Seongjong) and the Tomb of Queen Jeonghyeon.

Address : 1 Seolleung-ro 100-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Since we lived in Hong Kong for one year and a half before moving to Seoul, this place is not so special. However, if you haven’t been, it is worth going at least for a picture.

Address : 28-3 Teheran-ro 1-gil, Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Similar to Digital Media City, Gangnam is home to many of the most important Korean entertainment companies. If you are a K-Pop fan, don’t miss

SMTOWN –  83-21, Wangsimni-ro, Seongdong-gu, Seoul

JYP – 205, Gangdong-daero, Gangdong-gu, Seoul

trip to korea gangnam

TWG Tea might be one of the best teas in the world, and you can taste it in Lotte Department Store.

Basilur, on the other hand, comes from Sri Lanka, and apart from delicious teas has also a great picture-perfect location.

4 days in Seoul itinerary

Do you want to learn more about the Buddhist religion? Did you know that you can choose to stay at a temple while in South Korea?

Bongeunsa Temple has such a program and you can stay at the temple for 2 days, learn about the art of meditation, take part in a tea ceremony, wake up with the monks, and more.

Look for the road between Apgujeong Rodeo Station exit 2 and the Cheongdam crossroads because that’s where you will find the famous K-Star Road.

Here you will find various idol dolls – some large bear dolls with idol images printed on them. Some of them are even signed by the famous entertainers themselves.

Gangnam Station Underground Shopping Center (강남역 지하도상가)

If you want to do some budget shopping, here is the place to come to. Over 200 trendy shops offer the latest K-fashion items.

Luxury hotels in Gangnam

InterContinental Seoul COEX  – set right next to the COEX Mall famous for its impressive library, you will also be steps away from a subway stop, and one of the most beautiful temples in town: Bongeunsa Temple.

You will have access to an internal swimming pool, and rooms with breathtaking city views.

Mid-range hotels in Gangnam

L7 Gangnam by Lotte  – a 4* fancy hotel, set in the business area, with rooms boasting incredible city views. You will be close to subway line 2 which will take you anywhere in town, the interior design is luxurious, and on the 10th floor, you’ll find an Italian restaurant and bar.

Budget-friendly hotels in Gangnam

Princess Hotel  – while this hotel is set in the most expensive area – Apgujeong – it is yet a budget hotel without much of an interior design or facilities. However, it is close to many restaurants and stores, rooms are clean and comfortable.

Looking at Seoul’s map, you will see the popular district set in the southeastern part of the city. While Hongdae or Myeongdong are much more easily accessible from Incheon airport, you will find it easy to get to Gangnam as well.

Before you go,  get your T-Money Card + Data SIM

Take the Airport Railway train to Hongik University Station, and switch to the green line number 2 all the way to Gangnam Station. Check out timetables and routes here .

With only one transfer and a cost of 4950 won, this is pretty ok in my opinion.

Another option would be to book your private transfer from the airport directly to your hotel in Gangnam.

Living and traveling in Korea

The Soul of Seoul

Gangnam, Seoul: What To See, Do, Eat & Where To Stay

Gangnam is an area of Seoul known for being home to the wealthy, celebrities, and it’s not uncommon to see people walking around with bandages on after they’ve gone to one of the high-end cosmetic surgery spots in the district. Literally meaning “south of the river”, Gangnam gained international attention in 2012 when Psy released his hugely popular song “Gangnam Style”.

The area is actually rather new compared to other districts in Seoul having only been built up and developed in the 80s, and while I’ve most often frequented the west side of Seoul, I have gone to Gangnam from time to time throughout the years and thought it was high time I shared the spots I like in one of the most popular areas of the city. Here is my guide to Gangnam.

K Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea

Want to skip around this post? Here are the sections to look out for:

What You Should Know About Gangnam

Where to stay in gangnam, visit the beautiful sulwhasoo flagship store, get a spa treatment, take a bus tour, rent gyobok k-style school uniforms, sing like a k-pop idol, see the banpo bridge moonlight rainbow show, k museum of contemporary art (k현대미술관), the simone handbag museum (시몬느 핸드백 박물관), royyal dog mural, samneung park (서울선릉과정릉), bongeunsa temple, sikmulgwan (식물관ph).

(This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a certain percentage of a sale if you purchase after clicking at no cost to you. Thank you for your support.)

Did you know Gangnam is NOT just the area around Gangnam station? Don’t be confused. Gangnam is actually a district or -gu that is home to Cheongdam-dong, Nonhyeon-dong, Sinsa-dong, and Samseong-dong among other neighborhoods you might already be familiar with.

As the district is rather vast, I’ll try to share as much as I can, but do realize, this is a big area to cover. You could easily end up in Gangnam just walking by tons of office buildings without seeing much if you don’t plan it right.

Sulwhasoo Flagship Store, Gangnam, Seoul, Korea

When Psy’s song first came out I was inundated with questions about what to see and do in Gangnam and my first gut reaction was to say.. uh.. nothing. That’s not to say there is NOTHING to do there, but it’s not a touristy district per se. There are art museums and shopping streets, but mostly places that someone living here would go to see at some point rather than a tourist with just one day to see Seoul.

If you’re a tourist with a limited amount of time, I’d recommend other places like the Bukchon Hanok Village , Changgyeonggung Palace , and Gwangjang Market so you can see a more traditional cultural side of life in Korea just to name a few. If you’ve got an extra day and want to make Gangnam the hot spot to check out on your list, then here are the places to see, the things to do, and the spots to eat in the area. Make sure to get your hands on a T-Money card before you visit to help you get around easily.

Hop On/ Hop Off Bus:  If you’ll be traveling via the Seoul City Hop On/Hop Off Bus, know that there is a Gangnam route too. You can buy the ticket for this bus here . And to get more information about the bus, here is a guide to the Hop On/ Hop Off Bus In Seoul .

There are numerous hotels in Gangnam and most of them cater to the business traveler as the district also has a ton of companies that people are flying in to meet and greet. Here are two hotels that we’ve stayed out for a staycation in Seoul or some other good reason. These are both in a great location near the subway and we enjoyed ourselves and hope you do too!

Novotel Ambassador Gangnam, Korea

Novotel Seoul Ambassador Gangnam

We chose the Novotel for a staycation recently because of the great reviews and the indoor pool. We love a good hotel to relax in and if it has a pool for the kiddo to check out, all the better. Enjoy the beautiful lobby and this hotel that is just in a great spot to see everything in and around Gangnam and of course don’t forget to visit the pool!

Book a stay here on Booking.com or here on Agoda.com

Le Meridien Seoul

Le Meridien, just next door to Novotel is another amazing option for a staycation in the city, or for tourists looking for a Gangnam stay. This hotel also offers an indoor pool along with five dining options, yoga classes, and an outdoor golf driving range. This is a gorgeous hotel to walk around. Out front there is also an art museum to stop into. Don’t miss a stay in the comfortable spacious rooms. The stay here is really fabulous and the staff friendly and helpful.

Book a  on Booking.com or here on Agoda.com

The Twenty Floor Greenhouse

If you want something a bit more unique or special, check out some of the amazing Airbnbs in the area. The Twenty Floor Greenhouse is a spacious apartment that also features a beautiful terrace with views for days. Grill out on the barbecue while watching the cars and people down below. The vibes in this stay are meant to be calming and relaxed and really hit the mark.

Check out this Airbnb here and some other unique ones in the area.

What To Do In Gangnam

From luxury spa experiences to an awesome city bus tour to your very own K-pop experience, there’s plenty to fill your day with while visiting Gangnam. Note, you can also get from here to the Banpo Han River Park or Jamwon Han River Park easily so head there for a fun-filled day in Gangnam.

What To See In Gangnam

Looking for street art in Seoul? Fun art museums or aquariums? Or maybe the largest underground shopping mall in the world? Gangnam isn’t just for the K-pop celebrities and the elite, there is plenty for you to get out and about to see from Garosu-gil to Cheongdam-dong, make sure you know what to see in Gangnam. If you want to see the spots but don’t want to get lost, join a walking tour.

One of the most popular Airbnb experiences is a Walking Tour Of Gangnam By Moonlight. You can visit special K-Pop locations, COEX, K-Star Road and Bongeunsa. Take advantage of a night in Gangnam and book your tour here .

K Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea

I often plan trips around the city based around the art museums I want to visit. While I love cafe hopping, I can only do that so much before I’m full and need a break from stuffing myself. The K Museum of Contemporary Art has various exhibitions going on at the same time and they were all rather ‘weird’. That is to say, maybe don’t go here expecting to find older works but you will probably find quirky experiential art exhibitions which meant it was great for me with a toddler tagging along.

We had a lot of fun with this. I would definitely go back to check out the other exhibitions in the museum. Check their website for current exhibitions.

  • Admission:  Adults: W15,000; Middle School/High School Students: W12,000; Elementary Students: W10,000; Children: W8,000

This is a great spot to check out if you fall in the fashionista category of visitors. Spot this unique building with door handles shaped like purse handles, inside is an impressive collection of handbags. One floor houses contemporary styles from the West and there are yet other bags that date as far back as the 1500s. Make sure to grab a brochure on the way in to get more history and learn the stories behind the numerous intricate interesting bags. Check out their website for more information.

Royyal Dog Mural, Gangnam, Korea

Royyal Dog has very quickly become one of my favorite Korean street artists. He has work all over the city and I’m still tracking down his pieces when I can. Since I’m not in Gangnam all that often, I made sure to visit these pieces the last time I was around. You’ll end up down some streets that are a bit off the beaten path of Gangnam to find these murals which suited me just fine. Want to see some of his others? Check out his beautiful springy piece in Hannam-dong and then take a drive out to Ganghwado Hospital for a massive and gorgeous piece on this island to the west of the city. There’s also one just up the road from Seoul Station .

  • Address:  Nonhyeon-ro 142-gil 42 (서울특별시 강남구 논현로 142길 42)

Gangnam can be ritzy and glitzy, but there are still places to chill out and take a break. Much like Seooreung in northwestern Seoul , this park is home to several tombs for Korean royals including King Seongjong, Queen Jeonghyeon, and King Jungjong. Take a walk in this park that is an UNESCO Heritage Site and learn about the kings and queen buried here while getting a breath of fresh air and enjoying some peace and quiet.

While it does house tombs, don’t think of it as a graveyard. It’s really a large forest and if you didn’t know that Korean tombs look like grassy mounds, you’d probably walk right by without noticing them. Need a break from the hustle and bustle? This is the park to find.

  • Address:  131 Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu (서울특별시 강남구 삼성동 131)
  • Hours: 6:00am ~ 9:00am
  • Admission: W1,000

Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사), Gangnam, Seoul, Korea

Just across the street from COEX, this is one of the easiest temple to add onto an itinerary when visiting Seoul because it’s so close to a subway station unlike many temples in Korea which sit further up on mountains. It is also gorgeous and has a lot of history. Bongeunsa is a beautiful Buddhist temple in Seoul that you can visit during the day and at night. When I stopped in one evening before a dinner date in COEX, I had the spot to myself which was very calming.

If you want to learn about the temple and take an evening tour like I did, check out this awesome Airbnb tour hosted by WonYoung and enjoy this beautiful temple. This temple was built in 1498 and when you look into the history of the temple, there is a lot of drama surrounding it. You can read more about the drama and history in this post .

  • Address:  73 Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu (서울특별시 강남구 삼성동 73)

COEX Aquarium, Seoul, Korea

Just across the street from Bongeunsa Temple, COEX is the largest underground shopping mall in the world! Honestly, it’s easy to get lost inside, but just find an elevator or staircase leading up, and you’ll be able to get out easy enough. There’s so much to see and do in COEX that it really needs a post unto itself, but suffice it to say, it’s a must see.

From shopping shopping shopping to a movie theater, the Kimchi Museum, Coex Aquarium , 2 Intercontinental Hotels, SMTOWN where you can watch hologram musicals with SM Entertainment artists and a casino as well as a City Airport Terminal that allows tourists to check-in, go through immigration, and drop off bags, it’s an amazing spot for visitors to visit and even stay at while in the city.

  • Address:  159 Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu (서울특별시 강남구 삼성동 159)

Sikmulgwan Seoul, Greenhouse Cafe, Seoul, Korea

Many people would probably be surprised by just how far Gangnam district stretches. Head south to Suseo Station and you’re still in Gangnam and you can see an amazing greenhouse cafe which is totally on trend right now. The Sikmulgwan is a greenhouse cafe and gallery which has a cool modern and chic design aesthetic. There are plants filling the space but in a well planned photo-op sort of way and plenty of space for visitors to spread out. This is a must see along with some other awesome greenhouse cafes that have cropped up around Seoul.

  • Address: 590-1 Suseo-dong, Gangnam-gu (서울특별시 강남구 수서동 590-1)

A Local's Guide to Gangnam Seoul

Edited by Elodi Troskie

I’ve always dreamed of one day moving to Korea and living in Seoul, the capital of the South. Korea is quite popular among younger people, and at the age I moved here, this country was exactly what I was looking for. After graduating from the Moscow State University, majoring in Korean Languages, I packed my bags and moved to this dynamic, fast-growing city. At the moment I live close to Gangnam, the most luxurious part of Seoul. If you’re visiting Seoul for the first time , this guide to Gangnam will help you plan and prepare for your trip!

Gangnam: An overview of the neighbourhood

Gangnam: An overview of the neighbourhood

Gangnam is probably the most glamorous area in all of Seoul. As the business center of Seoul, it has the feeling of an olden Asian metropolis with skyscrapers, symmetrical office buildings, and high-end hotels. During the day, Gangnam is really busy with people commuting to and from work, so you’ll see a lot of suits and ties. At night, the vibe changes completely. The Gangnam district is the poshest place to go clubbing and bar hopping in Seoul. Locals who can afford to party in Gangnam follow the routine of going out for dinner, often at one of the traditional Korean BBQ places in the area, and to have drinks at a club or lounge bar afterward.

Why should you visit Gangnam?

Why should you visit Gangnam?

Spending a day and evening in Gangnam really gives you a feel of how the locals in this area live . The bar is set pretty high here when it comes to luxury living, definitely higher than that of an average Korean resident, so Gangnam will give you a glimpse into the rich and luxurious side of the city. The rest of Seoul certainly doesn’t all look like Gangnam, so if you’ve been to other parts of the city, you’ll really be able to see the contrast in lifestyle between the different districts. Even though this is an expensive neighborhood to live in, there are plenty of cool things to do in Gangnam that won’t all cost you an arm and a leg. This area is definitely worth exploring, especially since it’s so close to the beautiful Han River.

What to do in Gangnam in one day

What to do in Gangnam in one day

If you only have one day in Gangnam, I’d start the day slow with a walk around the park at the Han River. In Seoul, you can order food to any location at any time of the day or night, so it would be a cool idea to order some food for a breakfast picnic in the park before moving further to explore the urban parts of Gangnam. Shopping is one of the go-to things to do in Gangnam and opportunities for it are in abundance, so a shopping trip would definitely make it on the itinerary for the day (more on this later!). Moving around the city is pretty simple and convenient using the subway or getting a taxi, if necessary. This makes it easy to pay a visit to all the tourist attractions in the area and to explore a few hidden gems as well. Of course, a day in the Gangnam district wouldn’t be complete without a real Korean BBQ dinner and cocktails and karaoke at a bar afterwards, so that would be a fun way to end the day!

Where to eat in Gangnam

Where to eat in Gangnam

Koreans don’t play around when it comes to BBQ. You can get really good barbecued pork or beef (although beef would normally be a bit more expensive) served alongside kimchi and rice in any region of the city. One of my favorite places to eat in Seoul is  Seorae Galmaegi , located in the Gangnam district. The service is really good here and the prices are reasonable considering it's located in the center of the Gangnam area. Another recommendation is Saemaeul Sikdang Nonhyeon , a franchise restaurant that has a popular branch in the Gangnam area. Once again: affordable prices, great service, and an all-around 10/10 Korean dining experience! You should also try shabu-shabu , a hotspot dish that is actually from Japan but has made its way across many Asian countries. This is a simple but very healthy meal – basically a medley of vegetables and meat to your liking. You’d be able to order shabu-shabu from any restaurant in the city and it won’t cost too much! If you want to splurge on a fine dining experience or you’re looking for a Michelin star Seoul restaurant, Mingles is a good option. Mingles has been awarded one Michelin star and chef Mingoo Kang serves a wide variety of modern and traditional Korean dishes.

The best of Gangnam’s attractions

The best of Gangnam’s attractions

“Gangnam” translates to “south of the river” since its situated along the banks of the Han River, one of the largest rivers in Korea. A visit to the river is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. There are many beautiful walking paths in the park surrounding the river and relaxing here is one of my favorite things to do in Seoul. The park is a prime spot for a picnic! Bongeunsa is a beautiful Buddhist temple in the Samseong-dong district of Gangnam. The temple was founded in 794, making it a must-see historic site . Another stop to add on your cultural to-do list is the United Gallery located on the first floor of the United Culture Foundation building in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam. United Gallery supports young artists, showcasing both modern and traditional art.

If you’re sucker for shopping, Gangnam might be a danger zone for you! There are plenty of really good shopping centers in Seoul if you’re on the hunt for clothing, accessories or shoes. Korean cosmetics are of high quality, so this is the ideal place to stock up on any makeup or beauty products. Whatever you want, COEX Mall will have it. COEX is the largest underground shopping mall in Asia and the one-stop shopping location in Gangnam, Seoul. Apart from fashion stores by the hundreds, you’ll also find a food court with any cuisine you can dream of, a massive cinema, aquarium, the Kimchi Museum and the enormous ASEM Plaza and Event Court regularly hosting concerts and other live performances. If you’re looking for a more authentic shopping experience, I recommend you check out the underground markets that pop up at subway stations all across the city. These markets sell anything from clothes to jewelry to food and you’re guaranteed to find a few unique pieces at bargain prices. Remember that the vendors at these markets usually accept only cash.

Surrounding Gangnam: Seoul’s hidden neighbourhoods

If you search a little further than the skyscrapers and glamorous lounge bars, you’ll find that Seoul has quite a few hidden treasures . Seorae Maeul, or better known as the French Village, is a neighborhood in Banpo-dong that is popular among long-term expats with a particular large French community – hence the name. This area has a romantic, international feel to it. For an hour or two, as you’re snacking on a cheese platter and sipping on French wine, you might forget you’re actually in Asia. If the city rush overwhelms you, this is a pleasant spot to recharge.

General tips for visiting Gangnam

General tips for visiting Gangnam

Like I said, the public transport in Seoul makes it really easy to travel around the city. The subway will take you almost anywhere you want to go, and, should you need it, the taxis are fairly cheap here in comparison to Europe and America. Traveling short distances by taxi will cost you about $5-10 and only about $1,5 by subway. Just note that the subway only runs until 23:00 at night, so if you’re planning to be out and about late at night, make sure you have transport back home. Getting a taxi at night can sometimes be tricky and because there aren’t many drivers working at night, you might get exploited with unnecessary high prices. Money-wise, make sure you always have some cash on you for shopping at markets and small vendors since they usually don’t have card facilities.
