One of the oldest cities in America, Boston, Massachusetts has historic sites dating back to the Revolutionary War. There are colonial buildings downtown, brownstones in Beacon Hill and Back Bay, and preserved mansions now housing museums or shops. Though it is arguably one of the most historical and cultural cities in the U.S., Boston is far from a museum. Modern skyscrapers stretch up into the skyline; it is a leading medical, high-tech and financial center with numerous institutions of higher learning, and is also great for shopping.

Founded in 1630, Boston thrives on diversity and being first as much as possible. It is home to the first publicly supported library, public school, subway system, and the citywide First Night (New Year’s Eve) celebration to name a few on its long list of nation’s first’s. Boston truly has it all. Everywhere you go in Boston there’s history. Many famous American historical events, such as the Boston Tea Party and the ride of Paul Revere, happened here. There are trolley tours, Segway tours, and Duck tours to choose from in order to see it all, or you can visit the Prudential Center Skywalk Observatory and enjoy the 360 degree views of the city.

Those are all great ways to see Boston but, as tourists discover almost immediately on arriving from their flights, this is a great city for walking (and there are tours for that too!). Grab your best pair of walking shoes and get ready to hit the city streets. Take a tip from Bostonians: the quickest way to see the city is by following the red brick path known as the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile walking trail of the city that makes stops at a number of famous and historic sites. Along the Freedom Trail, tourists will encounter museums, churches, graveyards, ships and historic markers that help recreate the history of the nation, starting with the American Revolution. Some of these sites include the location of the Boston Massacre, Paul Revere House, Old North Church, and U.S.S. Constitution. The walk can be done as a self-guided tour or with a tour guide dressed in period costume. The Old State House is particularly important as it’s the first place the Declaration of Independence was read out to the public. The Black Heritage Trail is another excellent and important walk, all about the history of black people and slavery in the United States. Also be sure to wander through Boston Common, where late night concerts and plays often take place in the summer months.

Book a trip to Boston during the spring and you’ll be welcomed by blooming flowers in the Boston Public Gardens. Spring also signals the start to baseball season, so baseball fans book Boston flights purely to see Fenway Park and cheer on the Boston Red Sox. Aside from the Sox, basketball and hockey fans can catch a Celtics or Bruins game. Football fans can take a short drive or train ride down to Foxboro, Massachusetts to watch the New England Patriots. If you happen to reserve a rental car when you bookyour Boston escape be sure to also drive the coastline south to Cape Cod for some of the best New England beaches, or north to Maine for awe-inspiring colors in fall.

Boston truly is one of the most historical cities in the country. Don’t let the skyscrapers fool you – Boston flights enter you into a world of old brick buildings and narrow walkways that recall centuries of Americanhistory. It is also home to many bars, restaurants, events, and much more. No matter what your reason for visiting is, or how long you are planning to stay in Boston, here are some tips to help you plan and enjoy the smoothest possible trip.

Getting to and around the city of Boston

Public transport is your bet way of getting to the city center from Logan International Airport (BOS). You can take the Silver Line rapid transit bus from outside of the baggage claim to Downtown Boston and it is free. One of the stops on this route is South Station, and there are several different buses and trains you can take from there depending on which direction you are heading. You can also take the Red Line from South Station, which is the subway or “T” as it’s known in Boston. You can use the Red Line to connect to other subway lines across the city (there are 4 – the Red, Blue, Green and Orange). You can also take a shuttle bus from outside of the baggage claim to the Blue Line Airport Station; from there you can take the subway to other stations on the Blue Line. Connections are available to the Orange Line from the Blue Line at State Station, and to the Green Line at Government Center Station. You can also find other local buses as well taxis outside the arrivals. Taxis will take you direct to your hotel or accommodation, however, they are quite expensive in Boston so just be prepared. Lastly, you could also rent a car to get where you are going, but don’t bother unless you’re planning to go outside the city as traffic can be a nightmare in and around Boston.

Once you’ve settled in to your hotel, you are probably ready to explore the city. Boston has plenty of ways to get around, including the world’s oldest subway system, buses, trolley buses, ferries and commuter rail. The quickest, easiest and safest way to travel around Boston is the subway, otherwise known as the “T.” The subway will get you almost anywhere, and while the bus is cheaper, it can be much more confusing. Both the bus and subway run from early in the morning to after midnight. It’s easiest to get a travel pass, called a Charlie Card, for getting around, since different types of transportation require different tokens. Taxis are easy to find but can be very costly.

Tips for your stay in Boston

  • TheBoston Common(colloquially known as the Common) is the anchor for the Emerald Necklace, five parks spread over 1,000 acres and 5 miles. The Necklace is the only remaining intact linear park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. Next to the Common is the Public Garden, the country’s first public botanical garden. It’s also home to the bronze statues of Mrs. Mallard and her children from Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey.
  • Bostonians are fervent and passionate sports fans. With theRed Sox, New England Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, and Revolution, there’s always a game somewhere. Some consider catching the Red Sox at a night game in Fenway Park to be a spiritual experience. If you plan to go to a game while you’re in town, it’s a good idea to get your tickets online before you arrive.
  • Finding a Boston address is no easy task; there’s no pattern to the layout of the streets and too few street signs. The best solution is to use the GPS on your phone, or call to get directions. When asking for directions on the subway, make sure to ask which exit to take as some stations have multiple exits that will send you off in different directions.
  • A Boston CityPass will get you to the head of the line at several of the more popular attractions and, if you’re planning on using the T, a Boston Visitor Pass may save you money too. Another option is the comprehensive Go Boston Card that includes attraction, transportation, dining, and shopping discounts. You can purchase the passes online or at Boston locations specified on the respective web site.
  • Smokers, be prepared to light up only when you’re outside. In Boston and Cambridge (and many other Massachusetts towns) smoking is banned in all indoor public and work places, including bars, restaurants, and nightclubs.

Finding Flights from Boston

Those looking to leave Beantown for new vistas have their pick of destinations from all around the world. Find great deals on flights heading out of Boston with the help of Cheapflights. Many of the same carriers that fly into Boston also fly out of it, including American, Delta, Southwest, and JetBlue, to name just a few.

When it’s time to leave to the airport, save some cash by taking the free Silver Line bus shuttle to the airport. Operated by the MBTA, the Silver Line departs from South Station from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Just be sure to board a Logan-bound SL1 bus, as the line splits into two destinations. For service from the greater Boston area, the Logan Express operates bus shuttles to the airport from Back Bay, Braintree, Framingham, Peabody and Woburn.

Logan International Airport (BOS), or General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport, is located in Boston, Massachusetts – only 3 miles (4.8km) northeast of downtown Boston. With a workforce of approximately 16,000 people and four well-laid out terminals, this easy-to-use airport is renowned for its efficiency. More than 25 million passengers catch flights to Logan International Airport from across US and around the world.

Almost entirely surrounded by water, traveling to and from Logan International Airport is easiest via ferry. However, this is not to say that the airport is without alternative transport – in fact, due to a number of service providers operating at Logan International, including taxis, trains, buses and shuttles, the airport was dubbed “Easiest Airport to Get To” by aviation.com in 2007.

One of the airport’s main attractions is the Boston Logan International Airport 9/11 Memorial, a 2.5-acre site dedicated to honoring the passengers and crew aboard the two planes that departed from Logan International on 11 September 2001. Against a pristine landscape of trees and stone walls, with a central glass commemorative sculpture, the site is a place of reflection and remembrance.

Winter can be brutal in Boston. Snow is plentiful in the city and the cold air can be bitter at times; don’t be surprised by well below freezing temperatures. Travelers looking for cheap plane tickets to Boston are sure to find some deals during the winter months of December, January and February, if you can endure the weather. Summer, which is generally from June through July, is hot and steamy in the city and usually high tourist season. Not many airfare deals can be found on trips to Boston during the summer, but if you plan ahead it’s possible to get rates on cheap hotels and flights. Lastly, watch out for the “Nor’easters”. This term is used to describe coastal storms that bring heavy rain and snow, depending on the season and temperature.

When is the best time to fly to Boston?

Peak Season: The major peak season is from June to September, with July and August seeing most of the tourists. The days are very warm and sunny during this time. As such you’ll struggle to find cheap flights to Boston over the summer, and the city will be very crowded. A great time to book your flights to Boston for is during the spring and fall months. The weather is pleasant, the city is in full swing and most of the tourists have either yet to arrive or gone home. You might get the occasional day of rain but generally it is sunny. You might not get the cheapest flight to Boston during this time, but you’ll be experiencing the city at its best. Search for flights in the fall so you can take a drive through New England and watch the colors change. Flights to Boston in the spring are generally more expensive because the tourist season is ramping up. You will also want to be aware of the many events that Boston holds each year, as these can influence the price and availability of flights and hotels. Attracting thousands of people every year, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Boston is a remarkable and unforgettable experience. From parades to pub crawls, to parties to Irish cooking lessons, there is something to tickle everyone’s taste buds at the second largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in America. Many tourists book flights to Boston for this holiday alone. The Boston Marathon is an annual event that is held on Patriots Day, the third Monday of April. Ranked as the world’s oldestmarathon, its reputation as one of the best-known road racing events attracts around hundreds of thousands of spectators yearly. The track covers just over 26 miles of the city creating an enthusiastic, buzzing and united atmosphere, however results in major road closures and disruptions to travel. For decades, every September visitors and locals book flights to Boston to watch an array of creative film categories such as short films, animation and documentaries at the Boston Film Festival. The event showcases a variety of talents from up-and-coming artists to renowned filmmakers. Alongside enjoying the films, attendees are invited to join a discussion and Q&A session with many of the producers, directors and actors. Off Season: Boston gets cold in the winter, and thus November to February are the quietest months of the year. However, if you’re looking for cheap airline tickets to Boston, traveling in the winter is your best bet. Just be aware that there is great chance you might have to deal with some snow and occasional rain.

What should you pack for a flight to Boston?

Boston is famed for its beautiful changing seasons, from snowy winters to sultry summers. During winter, pull out your warmest winter coat to stay toasty, along with sweaters, hats, gloves and water-proof boots to tromp through the snow. For summer visits, short-sleeved shirts and shorts are the most practical, but toss in a few light sweaters and long slacks for cool evenings. The city is most temperate in the spring and autumn, when the days are typically in the 60’s and 70’s. Pack long-sleeved shirts and a light jacket. April and October are the trickiest months to predict, when balmy weather can turn cold overnight. Come prepared with light clothing that you can easily layer.

What are some things to do in Boston?

A trip to Boston isn’t complete until you connect with the city’s rich history. The Freedom Trail invites locals and tourists to visit historic sites while strolling through the city. Follow the red line along the 2.5-mile trail, which takes you from Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown to the Boston Common, passing the U.S.S. Constitution, Old North Church, the Old State House and a few other historic destinations along the way. The walkable city streets offer new sights, too. Sample from the menus at foodie destinations in Back Bay, shop for luxury brands along Newbury Street or explore the boutiques around Harvard Square. When you need a break, the city’s emerald parks await. Explore the Victorian grounds at the Public Garden, the country’s first public botanical garden. Here you can stop to smell the roses or ride the famed Swam Boats through the scenic lagoon. Boston breeds champions on the field, from the New England Patriots to the Boston Bruins, the Boston Celtics and the Red Sox. Take in a ball game at Fenway, football at the Gillette Stadium in nearby Foxboro, and ice hockey or basketball at the Boston Garden. The streets around the stadiums located in Boston also offer plenty of entertainment, before and after the game. Art lovers should visit the Museum of Fine Arts, where the vast permanent collection ranges from ancient artifacts to contemporary art, including John Singleton Copley’s famous painting of Paul Revere. Over at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, art aficionados find a small but immaculate collection curated by the museum’s namesake. Designed to feel more like a home than an institution, the historic building houses such jewels as Titian’s “Europa” and an early self-portrait by Rembrandt. Theater-goers can catch Shakespeare at the Shubert, musicals at the Boston Opera House or Wang Theatre, and new plays at the American Repertory Theater. Top 5 airlines serving from boston to seattle.

Excellent! So thankful there was an option to buy a small meal to have during the flight.

Airline dumped us at a different city and told us to find our own way to Seattle

Personnel were helpful and caring. On my first flight I was seated near the rear of the plane. Before flight and after landing the smell of urine was strong. The nice stewardess tried to cover the smell.

I feel that for the price that I paid, I should’ve received zone one boarding. Said I was zone two. And even though I paid for an upgraded seat, I was lucky to get a space for my carry-on baggage. So I think the value wasn’t there.

I encountered racist and discriminatory behavior by the Alaska Airlines staff on my recent trip from Baltimore to Vancouver with a connection in Seattle. After a power shutdown delayed our flight for several hours, there was a line of people formed who had connecting flights that they would miss. The Alaska airline representative in Baltimore handed out vouchers for all the white individuals and families in line and at the end of the line, a black woman and a brown man, separately, were denied vouchers for a hotel or a meal from the same representative and were told to rush to the airplane as we were clear to fly out. The representative in Baltimore assured them that Alaska airline representatives on the other side in Seattle would make sure they would have the vouchers for the night but as we arrived in Seattle around midnight, the Alaska airline representatives were incredibly rude to them and told them that by policy Alaska will not issue any vouchers for them and they remove responsibility for the delay. The two passengers of color separately explained that they saw other individuals and families receiving vouchers from Alaska Airlines for the same flight, and the Alaska Airlines representatives in Seattle accused them of lying. There is a legal case being brought against Alaska Airlines for this incident.

Friendly service and punctual flight times. Nice selection of movie and tv shows with the free in flight wifi which I enjoyed.

Did not have food. There was no entertainment. Flight was great, on time, crew was excellent

The fly was delayed but otherwise, not bad. I was in First class so not too much to complain. The SEA airport though is a different story.

I thought the whole trip was really good to Seattle especially being upgraded to first class and being able to get some sleep

One of the crew. Older gentleman was very helpful. Snacks and drinks variety were great!

Flight was changed from departing from Boston to departing from Detroit.

The flight was great. The crew were a little terse about the size of my bag. It fit fine.

Screen didn’t play movies, do I was pretty boated the entire flight.

It was very cold because the air conditioner was on high power, and my son got sick.

Delta crushed it. Flight attendant in first was attentive and just never stopped. Honestly one of the best domestic flights I’ve been on.

Delta is one of the best airlines I have flown

They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

Seats in first class on the E175 recline too far back. I was in 2A, and the man in 1A fully reclined almost the entire flight. It took 6-7 inches of space away from me and made it very difficult to work on my laptop.

It was a Red-Eye flight so was not comfortable enough to sleep, but seat was as expected. Crew was great and in-flight entertainment was excellent. Flight was smooth

Mario was great. Made a night flight on a small aircraft pleasant and memorable.

Like the space, did not like the snack options, there was no power outlet in seats, no entertainment, no flyfi.

Traveling with JetBlue from NYC was convenient as accessing JFK airport was straightforward via the LIRR to the AirTrain. Maneuvering through the terminal was hassle-free, which was a pleasant start to the journey. However, the flight experience itself left much to be desired. The seating arrangement was notably uncomfortable; despite securing a window seat, space felt cramped. This was exacerbated by the middle seat passenger encroaching on my area, which made the flight less enjoyable. Additionally, while the in-flight entertainment system initially seemed like a reprieve, the sound outlet on my seat was inoperable. This issue turned what could have been a manageable three-hour flight into a rather tedious ordeal, as I was unable to use the entertainment system effectively. While JetBlue provided a smooth process in terms of airport logistics, the on-board experience highlighted areas in need of improvement, particularly in terms of comfort and entertainment system maintenance.

The flight crew that we had in our section may have been tired or something. I asked the flight attendant about my son’s screen not working and she spoke down to me like I was stupid. He still had no working screen throughout his flight. The other members had no personality and seemed like they were annoyed when you asked them for something. Definitely took a hit for simple things on my JB experience.

I volunteered to let them put my carry on suitcase in the baggage storage area. But when we landed I was told it was being unloaded IN A DIFFERENT TERMINAL! I had to walk (painful for me) a long way to retrieve my bag and my ride had to move from the waiting area they were in to a totally different one. Not happy.

Over 2 hour delay for a 50-minute flight is unacceptable, especially in normal weather. Very poor communication via app

In-flight staff was very helpful and excellent. However, the flight was delayed by 90 minutes. Also the boarding process should be expedited in case of delayed flights. This will help the passengers trying to make international connections.

Overall fine but both ways for this trip was delayed.

I had back trouble prior to my flight and everyone was great about helping me.

My tv was broken on the flight which is disappointing when you pay for a seat and expect a service

Always delays from Boston to Salt lake but this time was very long. Don’t understand while they board the passengers and then make them sit in the plane

Short and everyone communicated with me about the changes every step of the way.

The pairing of personal Bluetooth headset did not work, provided headset did not work, then the screen locked and therefore no in-flight entertainment was available.

The flight was bumpy. No Breakfast or coffee was served, not even a bottle of water. The food was okay but odd. Rice with peas instead of couscous with some unknown green thing. United Airlines did not tell me that there was VERY LIMITED HANDICAP SERVICE IN NAPLES. De-plane via 20 aluminum steps. Taken to Van. You must walk into the terminal, find luggage, and then walk out to the rental car pickup spot that is 1 block from the terminal.

Crew did their best but the plane configuration is too tight if you're bigger than an average sardine. Controls for the entertainment system didn't all work. The aircraft hadn't been cleaned in awhile.

Charging and entertainment didn't work. The meal was horrible. They only came by with the drink cart one time for the 8 hour flight. They did come by with water a couple times.

We were traveling as a family of 5 and they refused to seat us together. There were entire rows open, and my 13 year old daughter had to sit alone. Ridiculous!

Never happened, because of the first delayed flight I lost the connection and had to wait overnight and take two flights to reach my destination.

Very poor the plane itself was really old, slight smell that couldn’t be named. I didn’t even get a boarding pass UNTIL AFTER clearing security! Even then, they said when I get to my connected flight I’ll get my 2nd boarding pass there! A bit ridiculous!

The plane was delayed ~ 40 minutes. Communication could have been better. The entertainment was poor. We were not offered headsets by the flight attendants. The arm rest pad did not work properly, thus, I could not select what I wanted to watch.

The flight was mostly on time, smooth and deplaning was quick. Baggage was really quick at the claim. Comfort was so-so and I paid for economy plus. It was still too crowded and why was a family of 5 scattered all around the plane?

Sometimes, it is difficult to figure out which seats is window, middle and isle.

I wish the indicator on the side of each row was easier to decipher regarding which seat was the window, middle and row seat. Otherwise, no complains.

The counter/baggage counter was busy and so many people missed flights. We got stuck sitting on the plane over 2 hours at the gate while they were doing an inspection is wrong. Many of us missed our connecting flights because of it.

a321 seating in business class transcontinental - international not up to snuff, no foot rest, entertainment unexciting

First time flying internationally with AA and probably my last. Not military friendly at all. Didn't allow free checked bag for military family members (dependents) on orders like other airlines. We were charged $100 for baggage weight overage (5 lbs!)even though we had military orders allowing us extra.. Didn’t allow military members to board early. Inefficient and long wait time to board. Seats are smaller and more uncomfortable than other airlines.. no drink service for over 7 hrs of flight! After initial meal was served, the crew never offered a snack or drinks until the breakfast's was served 1 1/2 hrs before landing. Overall expensive and poor experience for the entire flight.

American Airlines should be ashamed of their performance on AA1506 on August 14th from DFW to IND. First of all, after we got to the originally assigned gate C7, we were notified with too little notice for a first-flight out situation that the flight would depart from gate A25 in an entirely different terminal -- not just a gate or two away from the original gate. That was the first hiccup that started our day off poorly. It just got worse. Let it be known that the flight crew and gate agents were all as helpful as they could be during all that followed. However, the flight was a horrible mess of an ordeal. The plane was warm and uncomfortable on a hot Dallas morning when we boarded. And apparently we had to get underway for the a/c to be powered up. There was no other explanation for why we had to sit there in the heat. But before we could power up, some paperwork had to be completed, if we heard the announcement clearly enough. Then a "minor" maintenance issue had to be fixed -- but it was enough of an issue that we all had to deplane while it was being fixed, apparently because it was "too warm" on the plane for us to sit there in case the "minor" issue took too long to fix. And after we all finally deplaned and were hanging around the counter for news about when we could reboard, then a flight attendant came up and notified the gate agent that there a passenger at the rear of the plane had caused a major spill of some sort getting up and out of the plane. Turns out that was a bigger and longer delay than whatever the initial mechanical issue caused. According the gate announcements, the mechanical issue had been fixed relatively quickly in due course. But a seat was soaked and had to be cleaned up by a spill. A subsequent announcement then said that the seat belts were affected by the spill and had to cleaned. Then, either the seats or seat belts or both had to be replaced. At each of these announcements, the phrase "we're trying to get maintenance here as soon as we can" kept coming up. Clearly the gate agents were as frustrated as the passengers. After all was said and done, a minor mechanical issue and a major cabin spill issue caused a 3+ hour delay in our flight. American Airlines should be ashamed of its performance on this flight.

Flight was delayed , waited in the tarmac for 3 hours and then came back and was cancelled

Late and next flight even later. Who leaves at 245 am and arrives at 330 am ? No wifi, 4 hr flight and one bag of pretzels? AA should be ashamed

On time, smooth, luggage was out fast at the end of the flight. About perfect.

The main problem was delay. The plane was at the gate early and bags were loaded. However, there was no crew for the flight. They were inbound from LGA and had to land and make their way to our gate. It took more than 40 minutes. Then, once the crew arrived and boarded, one of the crew members had to deplane and then a replacement crew member had to be found. It took another 40 minutes or so to get the final crew member. In all, we took off about 2 hours later than our scheduled departure time. Once in the air, the flight was great. Smooth most of the way. The crew was professional and efficient.
