Kids have different sneaker needs than adults. When we look, say, for the best walking shoes for women , we have to consider adult problems like flat feet, bunions and work that has us on our feet all day. But kids are different. They don't need fancy arch support ( flat feet are normal for babies and toddlers and kids up to age 6) and kids rarely stand for hours; they're good at sitting when they need to rest. A good walking shoe for your child just needs to be comfortable, easy to put on, stylish enough for your kid and affordable.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute we have many pros who are parents as well as consumer families who test for us. We polled dozens of parents who have been buying and trying walking shoes on their children for the past eight years in order to come up with this list of our favorite brand recommendations.

Our Lab pros and parent testers alike trust Nike for kids' shoes, including these Star Runners, which the brand touts for track practice and other kids' athletics in addition to walking and racing around the playground . "Nikes are definitely a splurge, but I’m willing to spend on these sneakers because my kids wear them literally every day," says Lexie Sachs , Executive Director, Strategy & Operations, a mom of two and a frequent Disney World traveler. Her kids have walked miles in the parks in them!

Star Runners come in eight colors, including styles that lean toward girls ( bright pink ) and boys ( solid black ). Online reviewers say the tread does a good job of keeping kids steady through kickball games and more. We're showing Star Runners for big kids about ages 8 and up but there are also Star Runners for little kids and Star Runners for babies and toddlers — so kids of every age are covered! Sachs has also bought two other Nike sneakers that can be easy to get on. Nike Downshifter features a hook-and-loop closure at the top, and Nike Dynamo Go is entirely slip-on. At the end of this list there's also another pair of Nikes for babies. Sizes: Little Kid 2 to Youth 7

The laces on this Target-brand sneaker are just for show. These are easy, slip-on walking shoes for under $35 that help your child quickly get ready and out the door. "My kid insists on slip-ons because velcro is cringe and laces are too much work," a tester told us.

The Good Housekeeping Senior Parenting & Relationships Editor, Marisa LaScala , is a big fan of the brand. "My 8-year-old says they feel good and are comfortable. Every time she grows out of one pair we just get another. Whenever we try something else, she doesn’t like it as much."

There's also a mint green Harley . If you're looking for toddler and preschool sizes the Toddler Banksy comes in Little Kid 5 to 12, and in pink or blue. And for elementary-school kids, the brand's $25 Fin Hybrid Sneakers have no laces whatsoever and come in black, blue and pink.

Sizes: Little Kid 13 to Youth 6

A previous iteration of Target's All in Motion kids' sneaker gets a workout at the playground.

Adidas considers these hiking shoes appropriate for terrain as rough as trails or as simple as concrete playgrounds. Parents told us they rely on these as their kids' everyday sneakers — one mom even shared a screenshot of her nine Amazon orders for this same shoe over the past six years.

"My son is hard on sneakers and he has a wide foot, but these work. They are water resistant for light rain or mild snow days ," she said. This shoe comes in a wide range of sizes from babies just learning to walk to kids about to graduate to men's or women's sizes. The Terrex also comes in a coral pink color .

Merrell makes slip-resistant, strong outdoor walking shoes that are durable over time and good for all terrain from hiking trails to Disney parks . "My 8-year-old daughter loves these and they hold up really well. She grows out of them before they break or wear out," a parent told us.

There's a hook-and-loop closure at the top of the laces. These range in sizes from babies to big kids and there is a pink version and a classic dark brown and orange design .

New Balance Arishi Fresh Foam

Arishi Fresh Foam

Several parents told us that New Balance is their default choice, having tried other brands and realized that these, with their light weight but thick cushioning , work best for their fast-growing, fast-moving kids. The largely mesh upper make these more breathable than other kids' walking shoes.

This pastel fashion might especially appeal to girls; there's also a black and white colorway and all white . There's a version with bungee laces, the Dynasoft , for littler kids. "My son loves those and says they're easy to put on," one parent said of the Dynasoft.

Sizes: Youth 3.5 to 7

Testers told us that New Balance walking shoes are one of their repeat purchases; they just keep getting larger ones as their kid grows.

HOKA Mach 6

Mach 6

Our Textiles Lab has extensively tested the best HOKA shoes for runners and adults who work out. They've come to trust the ones for children, too, built to be " a lighter shoe, better suited to kids ," said Emma Seymour, Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab Senior Analyst.

The Mach 6 comes in seven color styles including black and pink . The brand says they are built with thicker outsoles than the adults versions for extra durability. (Kids are hard on their sneakers!) These are expensive for kids' sneakers, but they're sized for bigger kids who don't grow as rapidly as preschoolers.

Ten Little Everyday Original

Everyday Original

Sachs used these when her kids were younger. "I loved how they looked more elevated than an athletic sneaker, but they were great for a young walker ," she said. Ten Little has earned the APMA Seal of Approval from the American Podiatric Medical Association.

The Everyday Original is made with a faux leather upper, cotton lining and rubber soles. It comes in 11 colors including two shades of pink, black, white and a metallic silver. This brand received one of our previous Parenting Awards for their First Walkers , which are for toddlers wearing Little Kid sizes 3 to 6.

Sizes: Little Kid 4 to 13

Stonz Cruiser

Cruiser

These are featured in our most recent Parenting Awards where we said that they check all the boxes for top-notch toddler footwear : a wide opening, flexible soles, breathable (and washable) fabric and spacious footbeds. The sole is extra thick for durability.

In testing, families reported that their toddlers were able to get Stonz Cruisers on and off by themselves with the easy hook-and-loop closures. On Amazon they come in navy, black, beige and pink.

Sizes: Little Kid 6 to 11

Nike Swoosh 1

Swoosh 1

Our Lab pros and home testers liked these shoes for new walkers so much, we gave these one of our most recent Parenting Awards as well. They seem to mimic the feeling of walking barefoot , and the Swoosh 1 has a wide toe box to allow for natural flexing of the toes while babies learn to stand, cruise and take first steps.

"The shoe was clearly made with a baby's foot in mind,” one tester said. “The opening allows you to easily slide the foot in. It is also very lightweight!” These come in black, white, gray and the pink style, shown.

Sizes: Little Kid 3 to 7

How we test the best kids' walking shoes

a tester photo from a good housekeeping institute search for the best kids walking shoes

Evaluations for this list combined data from the Textiles Lab and the Parenting and Toys Lab. We used survey results from annual Parenting Award testing, data from Lab tests of the adult-size sneakers for many of these brands plus new polling of consumer testers. We focused on trusted brands that have been used by our testers for more than two and as many as eight years.

What to consider when shopping for kids' walking shoes

siblings stand next to each other in disney world, wearing walking shoes that can withstand a day in the parks

When looking for really good walking shoes, you should consider:

✔️ Age and size: You can buy shirts and coats that your kid can grow into, but you really want to buy shoes that fit your child right now. Look for styles marked for babies or toddlers if your child is age 3 or younger, for instance — they will take into account how wide their little feet are.

✔️ Laces or loops: Big kids will be ready to tie their tennis shoes. But for little kids there are hook-and-loop closures that make it easier to secure shoes closed. We also found plenty of slip-ons that use bungee-style laces or are lace-free for easy on and off.

✔️ Comfort: Walking shoes need to have cushioning and durable soles. Unfortunately you won't know exactly how comfortable a pair of shoes feels to your child until they're wearing them for a bit. The parents we polled said that once they found a brand their child liked, they tended to stay loyal.

✔️ Flexibility: In your grandma's time people thought that babies, toddlers and kids needed "supportive" shoes which meant stiff, unyielding styles. Now podiatrists say it's best if you can twist your child's walking shoes like you're wringing out a towel. Wearing flexible sneakers will help your child's muscles develop properly.

How often do kids need new sneakers?

two kids at the park putting kids' walking shoes to the test

Kids' feet grow so fast that it's rare for them to spend an entire year in one size. The National Center for Biotechnology Information says that before 18 months of age, a baby's feet can grow by more than half a shoe size every 2 months. Toddler’s feet grow an average of a half size every 3 months. Once your child is 3 or older their feet will grow by one size every year. This means that many kids will need to go up a half size every six months .

You can measure your child's foot size at home. Nordstrom's step-by-step instructions for measuring your child's foot in inches or centimeters has an accompanying shoe size chart that can help you find the right size.

These Are the 17 Best Winter Coats on Amazon, According to 6 Stylists

Affordably cozy.

travel coat sweater

Byrdie / Kevin Liang

If we could only choose one winter coat from Amazon, we'd have to go with the Orolay Women's Thickened Down Jacket . It's not only warm and cozy but also endlessly stylish and functional. But if you're looking for something slightly dressier, consider a peacoat, like the Anne Klein Classic Double Breasted Coat .

Does it ever feel like winter just creeps up on you out of nowhere? One moment you are enjoying sunny fall weather and then the next it's a full-on blizzard. If you are anything like us, you often forget to buy a new winter coat until, well, you need to put one on right now .

With a wide range of styles, prices, and quick shipping speed, Amazon makes coat shopping easy, even at the last minute. Still, it can be a time-consuming choice as there are many different factors to consider when selecting your next piece of outerwear—like material, length, and color.

And above all else, you want a coat that will make you feel comfortable and confident. No one wants to be freezing in a style that’s all trend or too bulky to move.

“Winter coats not only keep you warm but can add that extra wow factor,” says Vivian Lee , Styling Team Manager at Dailylook, an online personal styling service. “Even if you wear a simple long-sleeved tee and jeans, a chic coat can make your outfit.”

We spoke to four other styling experts like Lee and waded through the pages of Amazon to find the best winter coats this season. Whether you are looking for something purely practical, pretty, or a little bit of both, we found the coats that will make you excited for a snow day. Now, who wants to build a snowman?

Best Overall

Orolay women's thickened down jacket.

Materials: Polyester, down, feathers | Colors: Beige, black, gray, green, navy +more | Care: Machine wash

Back in 2018, the Orolay Thickened Down Jacket sprang into fame as it started popping up in New York City on stylish residents of the Upper East Side. Now three years later, the “Amazon coat” is just as trendy.

It offers the perfect balance of functionality and fashion. Six large pockets allow you to carry all your belongings without a purse yet also lend the coat a utilitarian look.

With a looser fit and below-hip length, the coat has that cool, oversized vibe without completely swallowing you up whole. And now it comes in a variety of colors and prints, including highlighter yellow and camo.

It’s made from down and claims to be machine washable, so cleaning doesn’t have to be a pain. This is the kind of coat you can just throw on over a pair of leggings and boots and you are ready to run all your winter errands.

Best Budget

Amazon essentials women's lightweight water-resistant packable puffer jacket.

Materials: Polyester | Colors: Black, burgundy, light pink +more | Care: Machine wash

For a lightweight coat that you can easily pack away when traveling, you can’t go wrong with Amazon’s Basics Packable Puffer. The form-fitting design comes in a hooded and unhooded version depending on your personal preference. Small details like zipped pockets and elastic bands make this no-fuss jacket extra functional and warm.

This may not survive a tundra, but it’s a great option for when you need a coat but don’t want to deal with all the bulk (and high cost). Simply put it back in its packable bag and tuck it into your suitcase when traveling between warm and cold climates.

Best Faux Fur

Apparis eloise faux-fur coat.

Materials: Acrylic, polyester | Colors: Steel blue, emerald, blue | Care: Dry clean only

Want to look extra fabulous in the winter? A fur coat is your best friend. Today’s faux fur versions are extra spicy by coming in glamorous jewel tones—not to mention that faux fur is easier to take care of and less likely to get dirty than the real thing, says Wishi stylist Yasmin Moinian .

You don’t even need to add accessories when wearing a furry number. Rather choose an eye-catching shade like mustard or emerald green from this coat by Apparis. The notched collar will keep your neck warm enough.

Best Puffer

Orolay ultra short puffer down jacket.

Materials: Nylon, polyester, down, feathers | Colors: Deep lavender, fiery red, meteorite (black) | Care: Machine wash

If you want the look of a Moncler puffer without the steep price tag, check out Orolay’s similar design. The glossy finish and cropped cut give this number a fierce look. Yet it’s also functional with its water-resistant nylon shell and downfill. An elastic-bound hem and tall collar keep you looking cool while keeping the cold air out.

Steve Madden Long Chevron Maxi Puffer Coat

Materials: Polyester | Colors: Black, brown, camel, champagne +more | Care: Machine wash

If the only way you are leaving the house on a cold winter day is by swaddling yourself in head-to-toe pillow warmth, then this Steven Madden coat is for you. Nearly reaching the ankles, this long coat has you covered from head to toe, especially with its removable hood.

The fleece cuffs keep your hands and arms extra toasty. With a fleece lining and a pillow collar, you might find yourself tempted to take a nap in this coat that is comparable to sleeping bag coziness.

Orolay Down Jacket with Faux Fur Trim

Materials: Polyester | Colors: Navy, beige, black, green +more | Care: Machine wash

This parka from Orolay will keep you warm without all the bulk. Within the form-fitted design, there is duck down and four layers of fabric meant to protect you from the wind and snow. The faux fur hood will protect your face from wind gusts just as the rib cuffs won’t let the chill come up your sleeves.

The large pockets make it easy to stow away your phone, keys, and wallet when you just want to throw this on and go run some errands. Like most parkas, the coat hits below the booty, so it will keep your tush toasty.

Calvin Klein Classic Cashmere Wool Blend Coat

Materials: Wool, polyester, cashmere | Colors: Camel classic, deep black, buttercup (yellow) +more | Care: Dry clean only

A solid-color wool coat is a staple in everyone’s closet. It ties your brunch outfit together nicely on warmer winter days as well as tops off dresses and skirts for fancy events. With three simple buttons, sewn-in pockets, and a slight A-line silhouette, this Calvin Klein coat gives you the room to layer bulky sweaters while still looking chic.

It’s a lovely coat with a sleek fit for both ends of the height spectrum. Most of all, we love the luxurious feel of the fabric and quality details.

Best Plus-Size

Agnes orinda plus size single breasted belted winter coat.

Materials: Polyester | Colors: Black, burgundy, brown +more | Care: Dry clean only

To stay chic while bundling up, Lee recommends A-line coats that sit comfortably along the midsection and thighs as well as belted styles that accentuate the waist. This classic style of coat checks both points off the list with its slight A-line silhouette and adjustable belt. The knee length easily goes with both pants and skirts and if you get bored choosing between brown or black, this coat comes in equally sophisticated burgundy and navy.

Best Trench

Orolay double breasted trench coat with belt.

Materials: Polyester | Colors: Warm sand, red, dark khaki (olive) +more | Care: Hand wash only

Slip on a trench coat and you’ll instantly feel as chic as Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany’s." The timeless style can make the most basic outfit of jeans and a top look put together. With Orolay’s number, you don’t have to shell out a fortune for a style you can wear for years to come.

It has all the details of a classic trench: the button-down collar, detachable belt, decorative wristband, and split back, as well as pockets to store all your essentials. The polyester material is wrinkle-resistant, so you don’t have to spend time ironing to get that crisp look. The trench is the coat you need to transition between seasons.

Best for Running

Columbia powder lite hooded jacket.

Materials: Polyester | Colors: Black, chill blue, blush pink +more | Care: Machine wash

For those that never miss their daily run , rain, or shine, you understand the importance of a well-designed coat in the winter. It needs to be lightweight and breathable enough to let you move comfortably while still keeping you warm. This Columbia coat was made with runners in mind.

The Omni-Heat Reflective lining uses a metallic dot pattern to retain heat, while the breathable fabric dissipates moisture. In other words, you won’t end your workout soaking wet and shivering in your own sweat.

The outside is water-resistant and the coat has polyester insulation. Handy features like zippered pockets and a hood with a chin guard go the extra mile. Whether you are jogging, hiking, or ice skating in the winter, this coat will help you power through.

Best Belted

Tahari wool wrap coat with belt.

Materials: Wool, polyester | Colors: Black, charcoal, deep teal, sage +more | Care: Dry clean only

Stylists rave about wrap coats because they are versatile among body types; the belt highlights your waist and accentuates your curves. From the designer Tahari, this wrap coat gains extra points with its wide wing collar that adds the illusion of sharp shoulders.

The hip-hitting length is befitting for all heights and can be both dressed up and down. You can even take off the belt for a trendy butterfly coat look.

Alpine North Vegan Down Parka

Materials: Polyester, cotton | Colors: Black, cobalt, grape (purple) +more | Care: Machine wash

If you want the warmth of down without animal cruelty, check out this vegan parka from Alpine North. Designed in Montreal, this coat has a temperature rating of -22 Fahrenheit even though it’s made from a polyester-down alternative; the hood is also faux fur.

The design also has plenty of pockets (four front welt pockets, one patch pocket, one invisible zip pocket on the cuff, and interior lining pockets) which makes it ideal for outdoor adventures where you don’t want to carry a separate bag to hold your essentials. The pockets make this coat great for traveling and sightseeing in frigid destinations. This jacket also comes in plus sizes .

Orolay Down Vest with Stand Collar

Materials: Nylon, down, feathers | Colors: Red, black, grey | Care: Machine wash

While a puffer vest may not be the first on your coat list, Lawson said it certainly should be part of your coat capsule. Not only is it stylish, but it is a great transition piece between seasons and fluctuating temperatures. Orolay does it again with this knee-length down puffer vest.

The oversized pockets, slanted zippers, and metallic shades give it a cool city-slicker vibe. It has an adjustable drawstring waist, so you can customize it to your body and outfit. Think of this vest as the perfect finish to an oversized sweater and leggings outfit that needs a little extra warmth.

Orolay Fuzzy Fleece Lapel Down Coat

Materials: Faux lamb wool, down | Colors: Black, khaki | Care: Machine wash

Who doesn’t want to feel like they are getting a bear hug from their favorite stuffed animal? All the stylists agree that the fuzzy fleece teddy bear coat trend is here to stay, and we are here for it!

Choose between mid-length or knee-length with Orolay’s simple design in black or camel. The looser fit and oversized collar give it that funky look. While fashion coats can sometimes skimp on the warmth, this design is filled with 90 percent duck down.

Best Faux Leather

The drop x @lisadnyc faux leather long trench coat.

Materials: Polyurethane, polyester, spandex | Colors: Ice grey | Care: Machine wash

From Adele to Cardi B to Demi Lovato, celebrities have been rocking leather trench coats all season long. Edgier than the classic trench and a little more formal than a leather moto jacket, it’s no wonder this trend is a celebrity favorite. To do your take on the trend, add this faux leather trench coat to your cart.

As part of Amazon’s The Drop, this style was selected by fashion blogger Lisa DiCicco Cahue . Cahue writes that the style is meant to be oversized with wide sleeves and the faux leather is buttery soft. Take a cue from her blog and style it with anything from leggings and sneakers to trousers and ankle boots.

Best Splurge

Marmot montreal women's mid-thigh length down puffer coat.

Materials: Polyester, acrylic, down | Colors: Jet black, arctic navy, crocodile (olive) +more | Care: Machine wash

If you're open to spending a bit more on a winter coat, Marmot won't let you down. The brand's Montreal Coat boasts a water-resistant exterior, micro-fleece lining, and real down-filled insulation to keep you warm and toasty when the temperatures drop.

It also has a hood with fur detailing for extra protection from the elements. But if you're not expecting precipitation or just want a simpler look, you can zip off the hood or just remove the fur trim.

Best Peacoat

Anne klein women's notched-collar double-breasted peacoat.

Materials: Wool, polyester, rayon | Colors: Black, camel, charcoal, red +more | Care: Dry clean only

This timeless peacoat from Anne Klein is a winter wardrobe staple. The double-breasted design can be dressed up or down and worn with anything from jeans or leggings to a dress or trousers.

Woven from wool, polyester, and rayon, it'll keep you nice and warm without overheating when you're out and about. This coat comes in several colors, including neutrals, punchy hues, and playful prints, so there's something for everyone.

Mackage Thalia Coat

If there’s one kind of coat worth splurging on, it’s a camel coat. Lauren Lawson, stylist at Bree Jacoby, says a quality camel coat will last you for years to come and will go with any outfit, whether you are getting dressed for the office, a fancy dinner, or weekend brunch. With its beautiful color and elegant wrap silhouette, this coat from Mackage doesn’t disappoint. Crafted from pure brushed wool, this coat won’t stretch or begin to look frumpy with wear. It will look smashing paired with a simple turtleneck or printed dress.

Calvin Klein Double Breasted Peacoat

Double-breasted and hitting a little below the waist, a peacoat has the elegance of a wool coat while being a bit more casual with its shorter length. Lee says it’s a great style for petite individuals as the length won’t overwhelm your frame. Whether you lean towards elegant neutrals to bold colors, you can’t go wrong with Calvin Klein’s take on the classic shape. The style also comes in petite and plus-sizing, so you can find the ideal fit. Despite its lightweight design, reviewers say this coat is quite warm.

Materials: 65% angora goat, 35% wool | Colors: Black, Camel, Cobalt, Baby Blue, Sunset, Indigo, Oatmeal, Crimson, Red, Black, White | Care: Dry clean only

Best Packable

Tumi clairmont packable puffer jacket.

A lot of coats claim to be packable, but what stands out about this design from Tumi is that it packs up into something useful; a travel pillow. Yup, you can roll this sucker up into a neck pillow thanks to a hidden pouch in the collar. For anyone that has faced the conundrum of what to do with your winter coat once you are sitting on the plane, this is the answer. Though the design is lightweight and fitted, its down insulation will keep you warm. Another perk? It’s machine washable and reviewers confirm that drying it with a few tennis balls will leave it as good as new. For all those frequent flyers out there, this puffer is a dream come true.

What to Look For in A Winter Coat

The most important factor to consider when coat shopping is what it is made from. If you need a coat you can don on the coldest, wettest days, make sure it’s made from a waterproof material and has insulation to keep you warm, like the Orolay Ultra Short Puffer Down Jacket. Down or goose feathers are the go-to material for warmth, though many brands are creating effective down alternatives for cruelty-free options.

Many down coats have a fill power rating, which tells you the quality of the down. Down with a high fill power can be packed tightly, and then fluff back up for maximum warmth. However, a high fill power usually means a higher price tag. Some coats also come with a temperature rating to give you a better idea of what temperatures they can withstand.

For dressier options, wool, leather, and fur coats are timeless choices. Besides being more affordable, faux fur and leather tend to require less maintenance than their regular counterparts, says Moinian.

The key to finding a coat that fits well is to try it on in person with a real sweater you would wear in the winter, so you can see what it will feel like when you are all bundled up. You want to be able to move your arms around comfortably while not being too large either. Amazon has some " try before you buy " coats and generally makes returns pretty easy.

“Make sure to wear an average winter outfit underneath, say a medium-weight sweater and leather trousers, so the size and the fit of the coat you should get will be the most accurate,” says Wendy Wei, lead fashion stylist at Wishi.

For those that are petite or under 5-foot-4, stylist Lauren Lawson says cropped puffers and leather jackets are the way to go. If you want something a little longer, she recommends the coat still hits above the knee. Taller individuals can play around with longer silhouettes. As with the Calvin Klein Classic Cashmere Wool Blend Coat , A-Line coats skim the lower half of your body, while belted and wrap styles are universally complementary across body all types.

For a versatile coat you can wear with any outfit, you can’t go wrong with neutral shades like black, gray, or camel. They are easy to dress up or down and you can add accessories like scarves and leather gloves in bright hues to add a pop of color.

“This season I am seeing a lot of neutral coats in classic cuts. Earthy tones are definitely it this season,” says Zuajeily Romero , the vice president of styling at Wishi. “The looks feel grounded and polished after our long pandemic.”

If you want a coat that makes a bold statement on its own, you can grab a printed coat or one in a bold solid color to stand out. The Orolay Women's Thickened Down Jacket comes in a wide range of colors and prints, including neutrals and statement-making options.

“Plaid print coats have become a classic and will still be in high demand this coming season," says Lee. "Slightly oversized coats for layering will also be super 'in', especially in soft colors like light pink, baby blue, and light gray. Patterned faux fur is also going to be huge for the daring fashionistas out there.”

All the stylists we spoke to agree you should have several winter coats in your closet. Not only will this variety help you dress up for different occasions and weather, but it also will help your coats last longer by having a few in rotation. “I have around 15 coats, but for an average winter capsule wardrobe, I’d say around four to six coats,” says Wishi stylist Adriana Gonzalez-Ramirez. “I recommend you have one puffer for harsh winters and street style, one classic camel coat, one classic black coat. A printed coat is always a fun addition to have for days when you feel more eclectic. A coat in a bright color and interesting cut is always a great idea as well, for dressier events. The most important factor to keep in mind is to alternate them to avoid wear.”

If you are just starting to build your coat collection, nail down at least two different coats; a sporty and dressy style. For really cold, wet days, you can reach for your practical option like a down parka, and then when you are dressing up for a party or dinner, you can top off your outfit with an elegant wool or fur coat.

Investing in a high-quality winter coat is a wise decision. It will last you for years to come and will keep you warm in the harshest conditions. The stylists say that winter coats can range anywhere from $200 to $1,000, depending on the brand and materials.

“A tip I have is to buy coats during the summer when it's hot and no one is looking for coats,” says Lee. “You can then purchase coats for a fraction of the price!”

Now that you’ve invested in a winter coat, it’s critical that you take good care of it, so it can last as long as possible. The most important thing is to check the label and follow the cleaning directions as every material is different and requires different care.

Most wool coats will likely need to be dry-cleaned. For real leather and fur coats, Moinian recommends taking them into a leather spot or fur cleaning service. Some puffer coats can be machine-washed, but it's best to double-check the label. If you are sticking your puffer in the drying machine, Lawson recommends throwing some tennis balls in there to help fluff it back up.

Besides cleaning, there are other ways to make sure your coat stays in tip-top shape. “I also highly suggest hanging your coats on a good hanger—such as a wood hanger—when you're not wearing them, so it maintains its shape. Brush your wool coats with a lint roller and make sure to keep it clean,” says Lee.

“When you end up storing it away for the warmer months, make sure nothing is in the pockets and that it is clean one more time before storing. I highly recommend storing away coats in garment bags to ensure it lasts for years to come!”

As any style star from cold regions knows, scarves are a winter must-have. They can keep your neck and face warm plus they add that little extra something to your outfit. Of course, you want to coordinate a scarf with the color, texture, and style of the coat you are wearing.

“If you are wearing a simple long wool coat, you can then add interest with a printed or colored scarf to make the outfit pop,” says Lee. “If you are wearing a puffer coat, it's more casual, so a simple cashmere one colored scarf will do. Let's say you're going for a printed coat, then choose a neutral scarf that doesn't take away from the coat to accessorize.”

13 Best Lightweight Travel Sweaters

Sweaters take up a lot of luggage space and if you’re not traveling to a cold place, you’ll probably cross it off your list of things to pack. However, no matter where you’re traveling, it’s always a good idea to pack one warm item of clothing. You never know where you’ll need it! Having a lightweight travel sweater with you is a good option.

While many of the lightweight travel sweaters on our list provide just the right warmth, you’ll find some that even protect you from the sun and insects. Some of the best lightweight sweaters for women can also double up as travel sweaters because they’re not bulky and won’t require much space.

How To Choose A Lightweight Travel Sweater

It goes without saying that travel sweaters are godsends. Gone are the days when you had no option but to try and squeeze that bulky sweater into your baggage. Nowadays you don’t have to look very far for the best lightweight travel sweater as there are plenty to choose from. While personal choice and style will be the deciding factors for most people, there are a few other things that are worth keeping in mind.

Versatility

When choosing your travel attire it’s always a good idea to zero in on items that are versatile. There’s no point in getting a sweater that is difficult to wear. Just like the best travel dresses , a sweater that is easy to slip on or off is what you should opt for. Many travel sweaters also double up as office wear, giving you the convenience of heading straight for your meeting without needing to change.

Sweaters are usually made from wool or a blend of different materials. It’s important that the sweater you choose is comfortable and non-itchy. No one wants to break out into a rash or be uncomfortable because the material doesn’t suit you.

Depending on your needs, the kind of sweater you choose is generally a personal choice. Lightweight travel sweaters range from open cardigans to turtle necks and V-shaped collars. If you’re looking for a bit of warmth of the draft, you’ll probably prefer a turtle neck or cowl neck but if you want something more breathable, a V-shaped collar is a good bet. Apart from the type of neck or style, it’s advisable to choose a sweater with a more relaxed fit.

Previously on the List

More highly rated travel jackets, things to look for in travel jackets, planning checklist, the best travel jackets for women and men 2024.

In this post, we check out highly rated and recommended travel jackets and include our favorites.

1. Patagonia 3-in-1 Parka – Best for Cold Weather Destinations ($699) →

Fabric:  100% Recycled Polyester, 100% Recycled Down For:  Winter activities, Urban exploration, Outdoors Wearing:  XS in Black

We wouldn’t have survived winter in NYC without these jackets. We’ve had them for six years and wear them when traveling to cold destinations (I was hot wearing this parka in Antarctica ). It’s a 3-in-1, and you can wear it five different ways since you can detach the hood and the insulated layer from the shell layer. Plus, they have a clean design. Even though we’re not in NYC anymore, we often use it as separate layers.

You can get the  Vosque (synthetic)  or  Tres 3-in-1 parka  (100% recycled down) . They’re both comparable in function. We have the Tres, which is slightly warmer and bulkier.

  • Five ways to wear the jacket
  • 100% recycled materials
  • Water-proof shell
  • Removable hood to look dressier.
  • Handwarmer pockets
  • Longer jacket to keep more of you warm
  • Can be dressed up but also handle outdoor adventures
  • 1% for the Planet
  • Pricey, but you’re getting 3-in-1.
  • Bulky to pack.
  • Limited color options
  • The men’s version is not as long.

2. Duer Jackets – Best Versatile Day-to-Day ($139-149) →

Fabric:  98% Cotton, 2% Elastane for LuxTwill | 70% Cotton, 28% Polyester, 2% Lycra For:  Urban exploration, Outdoors Wearing:  XS

We love our Duer Performance Jeans and have a few pairs each. Naturally, they take their tech and make jackets, too. Their collection changes each season, but we currently wear the Stay Dry Denim (men’s) and LuxTwill Trucker Jacket (women’s) with matching pants .

  • Performance denim
  • Can be dressed up or down
  • Comfortable, stretchy fabric
  • Antimicrobial treatment for extended wears between washes (LuxTwill)
  • DWR water-repellent finish (Stay Dry)
  • Reflective detailing for increased visibility (Stay Dry)
  • I don’t love having buttons (vs. a zipper), but I’ll mostly wear it open.

3. Nomatic Outset Jacket ($199.99) – Best Packable Jacket →

Fabric:  100% Polyester For:  Urban Exploration & Outdoors Wearing:  S in Black

We have a few different Nomatic backpacks and suitcases , so we were excited to hear that they have ventured into apparel. Their outset jacket packs into itself so you can use it as a travel pillow too. Plus it’s one of the softest performance jackets I have. I love all the little details and organization it has without being bulky.

They don’t have a women’s version yet, but it can be worn by either. Jacob wears a small, so hopefully they release a XS so I can get one too!

  • Insulated but breathable
  • Coating to repel water and prevent stains
  • 4-way stretch
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Insulated mid layer
  • Still looks more outdoorsy
  • Only two colors right now

4. Ministry of Supply Kinetic Blazer ($295) – Best Work Travel Jacket →

Fabric:  100% Japanese Primeflex Polyester For:  Urban exploration, work travel Wearing:  XXS in Black (true to size)

We love Ministry of Supply, especially since one of the co-founders is a Georgia Tech alum. Their tagline is “scientifically better,” and their goal is for their pieces to perform better than all your other clothes. I wear the Kinetic Blazer for conferences and anytime I need more business attire but don’t want to sacrifice comfort. I can even throw it over jeans and a tee to dress up a casual look. Jacob has the Velocity Blazer (photos coming soon!).

  • Moisture wicking
  • Lots of pockets.
  • Machine washable
  • So far none but will update you if I have any complaints after more use.

5. Anatomie Kenya Safari Jacket – Best Style ($398) →

Fabric:  55% Cotton, 37% Polyamide, 4% Elastane For: Urban exploration Wearing:  XS in White

This is one of the best jackets for travel if you’re looking for a mid-weight jacket. It works well dressed up or down while keeping me warm.

Both Kim (our million-mile writer) and I have this jacket and love it for all our trips that aren’t focused on hiking or climbing.

  • Flattering fit around the waist.
  • Lightweight (except white is heavier and thicker to avoid transparency)
  • 50+ UPF protection
  • Moisture-wicking/quick-drying
  • Plenty of pockets (top slash pockets and bottom zip pockets)
  • Offered in four neutral colors
  • Durable with a lifetime guarantee.
  • Not waterproof
  • It’s not as stretchy as other jackets on this list, but it does have a slight stretch.
  • No hood, for when it rains, but hoods also tend to negate a sleeker look.
  • Priciest mid-weight jacket on this list

Fabric:  100% Polyester For:  Urban exploration, Outdoors Wearing:  Size 1 in Blue Mist

  • Fully waterproof with each seam sealed
  • Lightweight
  • Wind resistant

Fabric:  80% Recycled Polyester, Recycled Nylon, RDS-certified European Goose Down For:  Outdoors Wearing:  XS in Cardinal

This jacket has a hoodie and non-hoodie version and is the warmest jacket I own (besides the 3-in-1 above, but I think of that as two jackets). Since I always run colder than Jacob, I decided to get one, and it’s extremely warm. I’ve had this jacket for over six years and continue to wear it often. It also packs down small, although not as small as the Patagonia Nano Puff.

  • 850-fill-power down – certified Responsible Down Standard
  • The warmest single-layer jacket we own
  • Breathable and wind-resistant
  • Water repellent fabric
  • Bluesign approved, responsible down standard.

10. Gamma Graphene Jacket – Best Rechargeable Heated Jacket (on sale $299) →

Graphene is the most formidable and lightest material on earth. Infusing this material into a jacket and adding many features helps the Gamma Jacket earn a spot on the list. The best feature is the built-in heating option. All you have to do is plug in a power bank, and the jacket is heated!

We just picked up their  Heta Hand Warming Power Bank , too! It’s the perfect companion that will support maximum heat output from the jacket, but it also can be used separately as a hand warmer and power bank.

Wear Graphene Coupon Code: Use code  LOCALADVENTURER10  for 10% off sitewide.

  • Made with tough and light material

11. Arc’teryx Atom LT Hoodie ($240) →

This jacket has a hoodie and non-hoodie version and is one we prefer since it has a cleaner look than the waffle knit design. We have the hoodie version but might pick up a non-hoodie version, too, since we wear them all the time, especially when we’re out climbing. We wear it in mild conditions and have used it as a mid-layer for colder conditions.

  • Warm and lightweight
  • Side panels help with stretch, performance, and breathability
  • Low profile hood for wind and light rain
  • Works on its own or for layering
  • Made to last. We’ve worn these for several years.
  • Has an outdoorsy look – although less so if you get one without a hood and in a neutral color

12. 66ºNorth OK – Best for Hikers ($395) →

This is Jacob’s favorite right now for cold weather. It combines warm down with Polartec stretch panels, giving you the insulation you need without sacrificing movement. He pairs it with his  Snaefell from 66ºNorth  when it rains.

  • Responsible Down Standard (90% Duck Down, 10 % Feather)
  • Polartec Powerstreatch Panels
  • Breathable stretch panels
  • It can be used as mid-layer or outer layer
  • Limited Colors

13. Graphene X Nomade Jacket – Best Packable Rain Jacket (On Sale for $249) →

This ultralight waterproof jacket packs really small into itself and even has a carrying strap. I love that the hood also tucks into the collar, so you can leave it in there if you don’t need it. The graphene-printed membrane makes it durable and breathable.

  • Graphene-printed membrane
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Self-packable
  • Reflective pattern
  • Packable hood
  • If it’s really cold, you’ll need an additional layer

Lightweight Travel Rain Jackets

14. Nike Dri-FIT Bliss Bomber Jacket – Best Lightweight for Women ($105) →

Fabric:  81% Nylon, 19% Spandex For:  Urban exploration Wearing:  XS in Night Maroon/Deep Jungle

I have a lot of jackets, but they’re all made for warm weather. I’ve been borrowing Jacob’s jackets until I recently found this Nike Bomber Jacket , a great casual lightweight jacket. I loved it so much that I got it in two colors.

  • Ultrasoft and stretchy
  • Sweat-wicking
  • Good for layering
  • Looks dressier than other athletic jackets
  • Only for mild weather

Travel Jacket Womens

15. Patagonia Nano Puff or Nanostorm – Best Overall (On Sale $119) →

This is one of the best overall jackets for both warmth and packability. It’s extremely light and comes in many different colors. The jacket also doubled as a pillow on the plane for me since you can stuff it into the pocket.

We don’t wear the Nano Puff as often anymore, but it has served us well over the years. Now, we either wear the interior of the 3-in-1 Parka or our  Nano Storm  is our go-to since that one is waterproof without feeling like a raincoat.

  • Packs into its own pocket
  • Bluesign approved fabric
  • Extremely light
  • Comes in a bunch of colors
  • Water-repellent design and windproof
  • Uses the most thermally efficient synthetic insulation
  • Very outdoorsy look
  • Doesn’t have a hood

  • SCOTTeVEST – We ordered the original ScotteVest because we heard such great things about it but returned them because they didn’t fit our body types. We will check out some of their other styles in the future.
  • Uniqlo Ultra Light Down – Best Budget
  • Versatility  – Most of our trips will take us from outdoor activities during the day to fine dining in the evening. Ideally, our jackets can transition between outdoor and urban environments.
  • Water-resistant is good if you are getting wet, but not for an extended period of time.
  • Waterproofing is necessary if you’ll be outside in the rain a lot. It costs more and is generally less breathable.
  • Down Material  – Most jackets will use synthetic or goose down. Generally, goose is warmer and more compressible but less breathable and less water-resistant.
  • Packable  – We’re always looking for light and easy-to-pack jackets, although, that isn’t always possible with larger winter coats, so prioritize what you need for each trip.
  • Comfort  – Since we’ll be wearing it a lot, we want jackets that are comfy.
  • Get comprehensive insurance for your trip.

Rest assured, we've curated a list of wardrobe essentials to achieve flawless travel and airport outfits, whether you are exploring a new destination for business or pleasure.

When it comes to the best travel outfits for women, accessories play a critical role in keeping you comfy and organized. All you have to do is remember a comfortable pair of shoes , compression socks to keep things moving, an eye mask that's an upgrade from the one the airline provides, and a chic shawl that doubles as a blanket. And of course, no travel outfit would be complete without a fashionable (and functional!) carry-on bag on your arm or atop your luggage . This bag should house all your essentials and still level up your airport outfit. Keep reading for some of the best travel and airport outfit ideas for your next trip.

Top Product Overview

Best travel jackets with hidden pockets for men, men's scottevest travel jacket essential 2.0.

SCOTTeVEST Essential 2.0 Jacket for Men - 24 Hidden Pockets & Detachable Sleeves - Coat for Travel & More (Sand, X-Large Tall)

While it’s great to have everything within reach, the SCOTTeVEST Travel Jacket pays special attention to weight management . That way, even if you have all  25 inner and outer pockets full , you won’t feel lopsided or bulky. Often an issue with this kind of jacket.

The  cotton blend material  keeps this jacket light and airy and the  Teflon treatment makes it water and stain-resistant . It also has  detachable sleeves  for a hotter climate, but it doesn’t have a hood . That means you better reserve one of those pockets for a small umbrella in case it rains.

The organization is good with this jacket despite the many compartments. Outside, there are two large chest pockets with hidden zippers at the top. Inside, a padded pocket can hold an iPad or tablet and a special pocket is fitted with RFID blockers to secure against credit card and data theft.

Two large hand-warmer pockets can also hold a water bottle and extendable/detachable key-holder in the right pocket and ZIP-PIP (zippered pocket-in-pocket) to keep items segregated in the left pocket. There are two interior clear touch pockets so you can use touchscreen devices without taking them out, and several smaller pockets for sunglasses, IDs, pens, and travel documents.

  • Excellent weight management and organization
  • Many pockets specific to different important items
  • Water and stain-resistant

SCOTTeVEST Men's Pack Windbreaker Jacket with 19 Pockets

SCOTTeVEST Pack Windbreaker Jacket for Men - 19 Hidden Pockets - Lightweight Water Repellent Coat for Travel & More

The SCOTTeVest Windbreaker Travel Jacket is one of the most affordable options from SOTTeVEST. Which might explain why it’s so popular. And you know you are getting a great travel jacket. After all, they are the brand for travel jackets with pockets!

This model comes with 19 pockets, 14 interiors, and 5 exteriors. Of course, that means you have a spot for just about anything. From your pen and sunglasses to your tablet and phone. I won’t go into detail on all 19, you can read it on their website.

It’s made from 100% Polyester and is also quite a bit lighter than some of the others SCOTTeVest offer. It is 1.2 lbs, so easy to carry around with you in case of a change of weather. It also packs into its own pocket, so it’s easy to stash in a backpack – just in case!

  • Lightweight and durable
  • 19 pockets for everything you carry
  • Reasonable price for such a jacket
  • Not great for really cold weather
  • No hood or removable sleeves
  • Material: 100% Polyester
  • Hidden Pockets: 19 - 14 interior, 5 exterior

VERSATYL Unisex Travel Jacket with 18 Pockets

VERSATYL Men's Lightweight Travel Jacket with 18 Pockets and 29 Features – Hooded, Water-Resistant, Hidden Pocket, Full Sleeves, Packable, Full-Zip Windbreaker Coat (Grey and Black, S)

The Versatyl Unisex Travel Jacket is another decent option when you don’t like the   SOTTeVEST options. It’s a little on the heavy side, but still waterproof so will keep your gear dry while you are out and about. There is also a warm hood, and some slide-out hand warmers, so if you are going somewhere cold, this might be a great option.

The biggest highlight of this jacket aside from its reasonably stylish look is the 18 pockets you get. Yes, that’s right – 18! From Napoleon-style chest pockets for things, you want close by to all sorts of internal pockets for more secure items. There are also some less handy pockets like those on the forearm, but you might still find a use for them.

They have also thought about the most essential items like your phone, wallet, passport, and documents. And, there is a handy loop for hanging your wired headphones on the upper inside of the jacket, for when you aren’t listening to your tunes on the go.

Just one major thing to be aware of when purchasing this softshell jacket – it runs small, so grab one size up otherwise you might be busting out of it! Although the zippers are quality YKK affairs, you don’t want to break them.

  • Pull-out warmer sleeves
  • Ideal for different climates
  • Sleeves are longer than usual sizes and fits
  • Hidden Pockets: 18

BOMBAX Travel Jacket

BOMBAX Travel Jacket Men,10 Pockets Windbreaker Flight Bomber Jacket & Coats Black

The BOMBAX Travel Jacket is a pretty nifty travel jacket. Not only does it carry a lot of stuff in  10 functional pockets , but it also has some fun extras to make your travels more comfortable.

Once you’ve stashed all your valuables, the  built-in inflatable neck pillow  keeps you comfortable during a long flight.

When you step outside into cold weather, the  built-in gloves  will keep your hands warm and that’s one less thing you have to carry around.

The jacket is made of polyester and is  water-resistant too . It’s a great windbreaker that can protect your jacket and everything inside it from being soaked by rain. So, it’s great for cold and windy climates, but it’s  not made for warmer weather .

  • Water-resistant
  • Built-in features for more comfortable travel
  • Well-designed pockets and organization options
  • Neck pillow can be bulky around the neck when not in use
  • Material: 60% Cotton 40% Polyester

AyeGear V26 Vest with 26 Pockets

AyeGear V26 Vest with 26 Pockets, Dual Pockets for iPad or Tablets, Black XXXL

Not everyone likes wearing jackets, especially when it is warm enough out. That is why a secure vest with hidden pockets is also worth considering. It can be carried around and used, or not, depending on the weather conditions too.

This vest from AyeGear has been well thought out in more ways than you can imagine. It has pockets enough for everything you are carrying. Including specific ones for your phone and tablet, along with clear plastic so that you can not only read them but also interact with them! How handy is that?

It’s also designed to be taken off at airport security, so if you want to wear it to/from your destination – no problem at all. Just toss it (lightly!) into the security scanner containers, along with any other electronics, etc.

And in terms of weather, it is wind and waterproof, so in many cases with also means you don’t have to carry another jacket.

  • Useful in a lot of different weather - windproof, waterproof
  • Specific pockets for electronics that enable them to be used
  • Lots of options for all sorts of things
  • Bulky when fully stored
  • Vest might not be enough in very cold weather
  • Material: Nylon
  • Pockets: 26
  • Weight: 550g

SCOTTeVEST Women's Chloe Hoodie Jacket

SCOTTeVEST Glow Hoodie for Women - 18 Hidden Pockets - Lightweight Zip Up Sweatshirt for Travel & More

For winter travelers , the SCOTTeVEST Women’s Chloe Hoodie Jacket will keep you  warm and cozy with a heavyweight fleece . It’s made with  100% polyester and is a lightweight way to keep warm while you are traveling .

It has a decent number of pockets  14 to be exact. This means there is plenty of space for all your gadgets, gizmos, and personal items. There are also a couple of external hand-warming pockets and one specifically for change.

The addition of a hood on this particular travel jacket means that it adds that extra warmth when things get cold or windy. This is always a bonus when you are out for the day in a foreign city and don’t want to go back to grab another sweater.

And, unlike a lot of the other jackets from SCOTTeVest, this one is super affordable at just under $100.

  • Warm layer for on the go
  • Hood gives extra warm
  • Enough pockets for all your everyday travel items
  • Might need an additional rain jacket with you
  • Pockets: 14

SCOTTeVEST Women's Trench Coat

The SCOTTeVEST Women’s Trench Coat is a great addition to any wardrobe. The  classic style  is great for any travel but also  works for daily wear whether casual or business .

With the longer garment than a jacket, the coat’s  18 pockets  are larger, easier to access, and can hold a lot more items equivalent to a travel purse. While it’s still not the best replacement for a bag altogether, it significantly lessens the number of items you have in your purse or carry-on.

As with all SCOTTeVEST garments, the  Weight Management System  keeps the coat from being too heavy or bulky. Add to that the  sleek lines and the belt  and you will have a slimming shape even if your pockets are full.

The coat is  water and stain-resistant , so you can walk through a downpour and keep yourself and your gadgets dry. The length of the coat also offers more protection than a jacket.

Despite its construction and material, it’s still  machine washable  making it easy to maintain and store. Unfortunately, it  doesn’t come with a hood .

Also, knowing where you put your phone can be a challenge at first because  some pockets are too deep  and will be more troublesome than convenient.

  • Weather-resistant
  • Classic style and design
  • Larger pockets
  • Some pockets are too deep
  • Material: DWR Nano poly fabric
  • Pockets: 18

Baubax Travel Jacket

Baubax Travel Jacket - Bomber - Female - Black - Small

The Baubax Travel Jacket is a startup hit , crowdsourcing a total of $9.2 million on Kickstarter and $11.5 million on Indiegogo On Demand.

It comes in  four styles : windbreaker, sweatshirt, blazer, and bomber jacket. Of all the versions, the Bomber jacket is the most well designed, does NOT look like a travel jacket, and will fit any urban or adventure setting.

It  is heavier than the other styles , but it’s  thicker and sturdier  and will hold up well even in cold climates.

It’s  built with lots of features and pockets  to keep you from having to dig into your bag the whole time. The jacket has nine utility pockets (six of which are hidden), an attached pen stylus, built-in gloves, and hand warmers, and a built-in neck pillow and eye mask. Yes, it has everything!

Sizes run small  for Bomber jackets, so make sure you get the measurements right. The material doesn’t stretch, but it’s machine washable.

  • Stylish design
  • Lots of built-in features
  • Inconsistent sizing

What to look for in a Travel Jacket or Vest

The main point of finding a jacket with hidden pockets is fitting everything you need inside. More pockets are not necessarily better. Some pockets are too small to be functional. Too many pockets will also just give you a more difficult time looking for what you need. Too few, on the other hand, leaves you with items that have no place in the jacket.

There are some pockets with plastic panels so you can see your phone without taking it out. They are super-handy, but come at a price, If you need to machine wash or toss the jacket in the dryer, this plastic panel can melt. So, be careful.

Also, make sure that closures are secure so your items don’t accidentally fall out of the jacket. This could just mean a zipper, or similar, but have a think about what you are going to put where, and how secure (in terms of falling out) it is going to be.

The jackets in this review are made from a variety of materials, so it pays to know what you want it to do, in terms of warmth or weather, before you buy it.

Not all travel jackets are water-resistant or waterproof. For example, there are travel jackets made like a sweater, so it will keep you warm but not dry. So, you will need another one to go over the top if it rains (or you can simply use an umbrella)

Waterproof jackets will keep you dry but can be too hot if you’ll be traveling to warmer climates or doing lots of exercises. It pays to be flexible in what you wear when traveling, so keep layering in mind.

A lot of jackets have hoods, which can be great against the wind or to sleep in a plane. But they are not a style everyone likes, as they are quite casual.

Others have built-in features like pillows and eye masks, but can be too bulky when not in use. So, don’t overdo it on the features unless you really need them. Find a design that fits your style of travel the best.

If you don’t need a hood, then hoodless jackets can still be a great option. And bells and whistles are often more hassles than they are worth. Stick with what you need, and focus on the security features that are going to protect your most important possessions.

The Best Travel Jacket For You

There are two reasons why you are looking for a travel jacket with lots of pockets: convenience and fewer baggage fees.

Travel jackets are similar in many ways, but the way these pockets are designed and secured makes all the difference. The best lookout when choosing your jacket is how easy it will be for you to get your stuff out of the pockets and, of course, how much protection you can get from the climate.

For men, the  Bombax Travel Jacket  has everything you need. The built-in pillow and eye mask are great for long-haul flights or emergency naps. It has enough pockets to store your things, and it’s weather-resistant to protect you from rain and cold weather. The manly and modern design also makes you look stylish wherever you go.

  • ▶[ABOUT SIZES OF BOMBAX BOMBER JACKET]: Please check our size chart as picture (not Amazon size chart) listed on the left part of the listing. The jacket is measured in flat [ITS THE ASIAN SIZE,please check the size image as left]

For women, the  SCOTTeVESTJacket   is light, functional, and versatile. It has detachable sleeves should you find things getting a little hot, and it has ingenious pockets to keep everything you need close to you. It’s also very easy to pack thanks to its lightweight material if you decide not to use it sometime during your trip.

What Others Are Saying

I absolutely LOVE your jacket. I have it in red and wore it for the past 7 months traveling throughout Australia, New Zealand, India, Bhutan, Spain, Portugal. The pockets and quality of your jacket is fabulous. Your jacket has been a perfect solution for me. I wore it for rugged hiking, going out to eat…everything.

five star rated travel jacket

“If I wasn’t wearing my Joey Travel Jacket my passport and wallet would’ve been stolen along with my luggage in Europe.

five star rated travel jacket

I never had space for a water bottle. I was forced to smash it into my briefcase which made it non-accessible until cruising altitude. With the Joey’s water bottle straps, I no longer fumble with my water bottle.

Dj Gilliland

My husband is very difficult to buy for but he loved this gift and will use it on our cruise in February. With all the restrictions on airlines, the large pockets are perfect.

So far, in the year that I have had this jacket, it has traveled with me to 3 countries and 5 states. We have a toddler who comes with me. Having the travel jacket has allowed me to travel with one less bag to worry about.

C. Torrente

I traveled many times without a jacket like this and I’m glad I have it moving forward. Definitely in the top three of my favorite and most worthy Kickstarter campaigns to back.

5 Reasons You Should Pack a Travel Sweater

Whether you’re traveling to a  cold weather destination , or just trying to ride out the chilly cabin air on your next flight, no packing list is complete without a comfy sweater. Here are five good reasons to pack one.

Carry On Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

Stay Warm on the Plane

Getting on a chilly flight sucks. Especially when all you have is some techy “shell” outer layer jacket that’s great for monsoon season, but doesn’t really keep you warm when the automatic AC comes blowing out that little vent in the ceiling. I hate being cold on planes. Luckily, packing a travel sweater is a great to stay warm on your next flight.

Bonus : If you heat up on the flight you can take off your sweater and use it like a little lap blanket or additional cushion if you don’t have a pillow. And, if you’re rocking the hoodie, say hello to your own little privacy pod. If you’re really into travel hoodies, check out this article on the  best travel hoodies for men and women .

Double Bonus : You don’t have to remove your sweater when you go through TSA security, so that’s awesome.

Sweaters are Cozy

Merino sweaters are the best. The best, I tell-ya. Everyone has a guilty travel pleasure. Some people love expensive  socks  or multiple  bathing suits , or a fancy electric toothbrush. I’m into the perfect outer layer, and for me that’s a great sweater,  hoodie , or shacket ( shirt jacket ). I don’t travel with outer shell jackets or even puffy coats very much anymore and that’s primarily because they’re just not as comfortable. Durable? Sure. Comfy and cozy? Nope.

And cozy always wins, guys.

Layers are the Best Way to Stay Warm

I know you’re excited about the $280 seam-sealed, ultra lightweight jacket/shell you just bought—and you should be. It’s probably an amazing piece of gear. But is it what you need for walking to a cafe or museum? Better yet, is that one, super expensive layer actually better than a few good layers of merino?

The problem with expensive travel jackets is that they’re really only good in specific situations. Don’t get me wrong, some of those jackets are incredible, but if it’s not pouring rain, you probably don’t need a jacket. What’s worse, if you don’t have the right layers on underneath, even a great jacket isn’t going to keep you warm and comfy. And, if you do get hot (from the humidity or even just working up a sweat on a good trek through town), you’ll only have the one layer to remove.

Sweaters act like the icing on an already delicious “cake” of good quality travel clothing—like merino shirts and underlayers. When you ask one piece of clothing to keep you warm, it almost inevitably fails. Get a good lightweight travel sweater and  add  it to your other functional clothing for a little extra warmth. Supplement with sweaters instead of depending on jackets to do everything. And if it rains, just go inside for a while. Or get wet. You’ll be ok.

Sweaters are More Stylish than a Puffy Coat

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from traveling for over a decade it’s this—you don’t always want to look and feel like a “backpacker.” When you travel for months at a time, or even regularly for work, it’s important to still feel comfortable.

You don’t always have to pack the lightest, sweat-wicking, moisture resistant,  wrinkle free  travel clothing. It’s nice to have a few pieces of “regular” clothing in your travel wardrobe, especially if they’re comfy clothes that make you feel like yourself. Also, I hate rolling up to happy hour and looking like I just rolled out of a tent. I know I look techie most of the time, but for me it’s important to wear “real people” clothing while I travel. And sweaters just look way better than that North Face shell you’re rocking.

Tips for Packing Sweaters

Sweaters are bulky. Your best bet is to wear it on the plane.

Even if you pack a lighter weight sweater, it will still take up more room in your bag than your t-shirts. To reduce the amount of space they take up use  packing cubes or compression bag . You can buy compression packing cubes, but even regular packing cubes will reduce the amount of space your sweater takes up in your bag.

Also, roll, don’t fold your sweaters. Especially if your sweater is made of a fabric that could potentially wrinkle, like cashmere,  rolling instead of folding  can prevent unwanted creases.

The Best Lightweight Travel Sweaters

The most common reason not to pack a sweater for travel is that they’re bulky. And you’re right—a lot of sweaters are chunky wool monstrosities that take up half of your bag. You might love a sweater in your closet, but when it’s time to pack you ask yourself, “Can I pack this?” And it’s a good question. But a better question to ask might be, “Will I  use  this?”

If you pack one of these lightweight sweaters, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!” Because these sweaters weigh next to nothing, look great, and keep you toasty warm. Here are the best lightweight travel sweaters.

travel coat sweater

Unbound Merino Compact Travel Hoodie  ($165)

This merino hoodie tops my list of travel sweaters (yes, I consider this a sweater), for one reason. It’s simple. Almost incredibly so. The Unbound Compact travel hoodie has everything I want in a travel sweater without all the crap I don’t. Zipper. Hoodie. Lightweight beautifully perfect merino. That’s it. It’s clean, simple, perfection. Let me explain what I mean.

When I say this is a merino hoodie, I mean that it’s merino. 100% merino. And not just any merino, it’s “100% ultra-fine 17.5 micron, 190g/m2 Merino wool.” That’s crazy fine merino, which means it’s not only soft to the touch and comfortable, it’s lightweight, breathable and super warm. Merino is a magic fabric that excels at trapping body heat while letting moisture (and odor) escape. And the finer the merino fiber, the better it gets.

And that’s just how it feels. I haven’t mentioned how it travels.

The Compact Travel Hoodie comes with a (silky soft) carrying stuff sack, but if you don’t feel like packing that, it rolls down to the size of a standard cotton t-shirt. I actually don’t notice this thing when it’s side by side with my shirts in the packing cube. It’s that slim. And that’s because of what you won’t find on this travel sweater.

The Compact Hoodie doesn’t have any pockets . That may be a deal breaker for you, but I love it. It means I can roll this hoodie down and pack it without it bulging. Also, I’m not tempted to cram tons of heavy stuff into the pockets (thereby stretching out the wool). This sweater doesn’t have hidden zippers or places to stash your passport because it’s a  sweater . It’s (painstakingly) designed to keep you warm. Period. And it looks great doing it.

This hoodie also resists odors (like most good merino), packs down to nothing, and Unbound claims that you can wear it for an entire year without washing it (another reason I think of this as more of a wool travel sweater vs a travel hoodie). I’ve only had this sweater for a few weeks, but it’s already my go-to for biking to the city, heading to the climbing gym, or just chilling on the couch with another radical fantasy novel about dragons and wizards. Yeah, I still read those books. The unbound the best lightweight outer layer I’ve worn in years.

Plus, my girlfriend thinks I look great in it, so there’s that.

travel coat sweater

Lululemon Soft Shine Sweater  ($79)

Yep,  Lulu makes sweaters  and, naturally, they’re at once hygge-levels of cozy and functional. A touch of cashmere in travel-ready sweaters such as their  Apres Your Way  ($98) and  Soft Shine  ($79), makes them soft, comfortable. But don’t let this luxurious detail fool you—cashmere is actually a  really great travel fabric , since it’s warm, lightweight, and doesn’t wrinkle easily (and, when if you do have a few creases, you can easily release them by hanging them our laying it flat for a bit).

Unlike a lot of cashmere sweaters, though, Lulu’s are machine-washable.

travel coat sweater

Cotopaxi Libre Sweater  ($140)

If you want a lightweight travel sweater that screams, “I’m a badass traveler,” get the Cotopaxi Libre. Made entirely from llama wool this sweater is insanely soft yet vitally warm. The beefed up ribbing and special tailored “raglan” sleeves give you warmth and durability in a surprisingly travel-friendly sized package.

The silhouette is slim (which l love), and the sweater can stand up to wind and chill better than anything you probably own. Plus, it’s made 100% in Bolivia using llama fiber and local farmers and workers, so you can feel good wearing it as well as buying it.

Bonus : The vintage style and wide range of vibrant colors will make you stand out… but in a good way.

travel coat sweater

Everlane Cashmere Crew Sweater: Men’s and Women’s  ($100)

Merino gets a lot attention (from writers like me) but cashmere is a great travel fabric. If you want a lightweight travel sweater that keeps you warm, feels like a dream, and looks fantastic, cashmere is the way to go. Yeah. Cashmere.

Cashmere is insanely lightweight yet still rugged enough to keep you warm on chilly fall or winter days (with the right layers). Cashmere fibers are hollow, which means they are designed to trap warmth without adding bulk and weight. Everlane sources Grade-A superfine cashmere from Mongolia (15 microns thin!) so you get the softest, most durable finish without taking up any extra room in your backpack.

If you have to look good on your trip, consider cashmere travel sweaters as an alternative to techie looking travel jackets.

travel coat sweater

Buck Mason Avalon Knit Sweater  ($95)

If you want a more “adult” style sweater than a hoodie, get on the Buck Mason train.  Buck Mason’s line of travel sweaters features  cotton and linen blend crew neck sweaters might be the most versatile yet fashionable travel sweaters I’ve seen in long time.

The dense waffle-like knit of the cotton/linen blend makes this sweater a warmer layer for chilly nights, yet still soft enough to wear solo. It’s almost a hybrid of a thermal base layer and a sweater… but great looking. Perfect for light layering when you expect cooler nights, yet stylish enough for professional meetings and sipping espresso in a cafe. This travel sweater is chic as all hell, and comfortable too.

travel coat sweater

Buck Mason Vintage Dyed Cotton Travel Sweater  ($125)

I don’t often advocate for cotton travel clothing , but this lightweight travel sweater is changing my mind. The classic crew neck construction and soft lightweight cotton make this an easy wearing top layer perfect for the beach, bonfires, or a 10-hour bus ride. Treat this sweater like a fancy long sleeve shirt (it’s cotton so you can wear it as a shirt without getting scratchy), or layer up for chilly nights.

I can’t get enough of the textured thoughtful finish and construction. Big fan of this lightweight heavy hitter. (See what I did there?).

travel coat sweater

ADAY Like a Boss Sweatshirt  ($145)

Ladies, this is your fashion-forward, eco-friendly, quick-dry option.

Yes, it’s technically a sweatshirt, but ADAY’s  Like a Boss Sweatshirt  is a damn fashionable one that will leave you looking street-ready, not sloppy. But that alone doesn’t make it a great travel piece. It’s also impossible to wrinkle, warm, comfortable, breathable, quick-dry, doesn’t pill, and is surprisingly wind resistant. Need I go on?

The only con is that it doesn’t pack down super small—it’s on the bulkier side of light weight—but otherwise it pretty much hits all our needs in a travel sweater. So, maybe wear this one on the plane?

Best Travel Sweaters With Pockets

travel coat sweater

Royal Robbins All Season Merino Track Jacket  ($130)

I don’t love pockets on a sweater (hey, that’s just me), but if you want a travel sweater with pockets to keep your stuff safe, you might as well go with merino wool. The Royal Robins All Season merino sweater is dressier than a sweatshirt but still a tough enough lightweight layer for chilly flights and chilly mornings sipping coffee while huddled around the glow of your laptop screen.

The ribbed hem and cuffs really separate this zip up sweater from other hoodies, and zippered pockets are a great place to stash chapstick or heck, even your passport.

travel coat sweater

Patagonia’s Better Sweater  ($99)

You really can’t go wrong with any of  Patagonia’s sweaters . As an outdoor company, Patagonia puts performance and comfort first. For example, their Better Sweater is made from a lightweight polyester fleece material that balances warmth and weight better than most fleeces. But, they don’t sacrifice style to get there (you may have already noticed Patagonia’s classic sweater popping up in fashion retailers and blogs this past season).

Of course, one of my favorite features of their Better Sweater and its offshoots, like the  Better Sweater Fleece Jacket  ($139), is  pockets.  Sleeve pockets, side pockets, interior pockets—you heard it here: Patagonia’s got pockets.

Community and sustainability are at the core of Patagonia’s company mission. All of their sweaters are eco-friendly and made with sustainable practices, so you can rest assured that your purchase is an ethically sound one.

Best Travel Cardigans

I’m not a huge fan of travel cardigans, as they’re not really a “travel friendly” item for a lot of guys. I find that the buttons don’t handle the strains of travel all that well, and the wide open collar is kind of the opposite of what I’m looking for in a travel sweater—aka warmth.

That being said, I understand that some guys love that cardigan style, R.I.P. Mr Rogers. So here’s shawl collar sweater that still handle’s travel like a champ, and of course, one for the ladies too.

travel coat sweater

Lucky Shawl Collar Pocket Cardigan  ($109)

This slim, lightweight cotton travel cardigan is made with soft cotton fibers in a classic shawl collar silhouette that says, “I read Thoreau for fun.” The two button, closed front pockets are perfect for a moleskine journal or your ear buds, and it buttons high enough to keep you warm. Plus, it’s machine washable which is a bigger deal than you think.

travel coat sweater

Uniqlo Merino Wool Cardigan  ($40)

A good piece of travel clothing doesn’t necessarily have to come at a high price point—which  Uniqlo  has proven time and time again with its down jackets, jeggings, and heattech under armor. Their sweaters are no exception.

Specifically, their 100% merino wool sweaters stand out as one of the most affordable merino wool sweaters out there. Plus, they come in a wide variety of colors and styles, including cardigans The only downside is that they’re not super warm—which makes them best suited as a lightweight travel sweater or option for layering.

If you’re looking for more cardigans for women as travel sweaters, try  Travelsmith.  They’ve got a wide selection.

Best Merino Travel Sweaters

travel coat sweater

Athleta Bayside Sweater  ($98)

The product line at Athleta is ever-changing, but their  sweater line-up  always includes a few travel-ready pieces. For example, their  Bayside sweater  uses a cozy blend of merino wool and THERMOLITE® that gives it a comfortable feel. Plus, it’s machine-washable and, since it’s a more form-fitting style, packs down lighter than other sweaters. If you’re looking for a simple, lightweight travel sweater, this one checks all the boxes.

If the Bayside doesn’t fit your style needs, keep an eye out for other Athleta sweaters that use THERMOLITE®, a material designed to make sweaters warm, comfortable, and durable, but without the extra weight and bulk of traditional fibers. It’s almost like a shorthand for “great for travel.”

travel coat sweater

Minus33 Midweight Chocorua Merino Crew Travel Sweater  ($75)

Surprisingly affordable, yet still packed with all the benefits of fine-grade merino, this travel sweater is built for the long haul. Crafted from 100% Australian merino wool (18.5 microns) this sweater is rated as both a great base layer and a mid-layer. So it’s good for sunny days (with a bit of chill), or part of your layering for chilly hikes or city exploration.

This sweater is so versatile it’s even got a UPF50+ rating (that’s for sun protection). I love how light this sweater is (about 10 ounces), and can’t get over the versatility. But that’s what you get when you invest in quality merino clothing—even sweaters. You get a 3-season layer for just about any kind of weather.

travel coat sweater

Bonobos Washable Merino V-Neck Sweater  ($88)

If you like ordering clothing online (like I do), you’ll love Bonobos merino travel sweater. If you’re unfamiliar, Bonobos is an online-only retailer. That means they have stores in select cities, but you can’t take anything home with you. They’re just for fit. Once you know you’re size, you’re good to go. And these sweaters are definitely built to go.

The 100% merino sweaters are sleek, stylish, and full of all the benefits you’d expect from merino wool. Plus, they’re machine washable. You can roll (or fold) this sweater up and stash it in your bag for that important skype meeting, then grab an Aperol Spritz for sunset. Classy merino sweaters don’t have to break the bank or your backpack.

travel coat sweater

prAna Brandie Sweater  ($139)

If it’s an eco-friendly merino wool sweater you’re after,  prAna  is an excellent brand to look at. While not all of their sweaters are made of wool, those that are—such as their fashion-forward  Brandie Sweater —promise to be warm, comfy, and breathable. Plus, they lack the bulk of a chunky knit sweater and pack down well in your pack.

Additionally, prAna’s yogi-centric line of sweaters has a few cozy cardigans (with pockets!) that works as a versatile and warm basic you can layer over many outfits.

Travel is about more than optimizing every single inch of your packing space. It’s about selecting the items of clothing and gear that perform and feel the way you want. That’s why I started packing a travel sweater on almost all of my trips, and why you should too.

Today’s travel sweaters are thinner, lighter, softer, and warmer than ever. Change the way you think about outer layers and level up your travel wardrobe with a great travel sweater.

  • Merino wool is still king; it doesn’t smell, feels like a cloud, and looks great
  • Shawl collar sweaters are a great alternative to cardigans
  • Don’t be afraid to ditch the pockets. Let your sweater be a sweater (it’s better that way)

travel coat sweater

Packing for a trip can be stressful, especially when space in your suitcase is at a premium, and you want to make sure you’re prepared for any situation. The best travel sweaters are made from comfortable materials that wear well, and have a versatile style that you can incorporate into multiple outfits.

When choosing a sweater for traveling, material is the first thing you should consider. Merino wool is widely considered to be the overall best fabric for travel clothing, since it’s lightweight, thermoregulating, and can be worn for weeks at a time without washing. It’s also odor-resistant and can offer some UV protection — two great bonus features.

However, merino clothing can be pricey, and since some people are sensitive to the lanolin in wool (or just don’t love how it feels) there are a few other fabrics worth considering. If you’re worried about itchiness, cashmere is a softer wool fabric that’s also lightweight and doesn’t need to be washed frequently , and can often be found blended with other fabrics to keep it more budget-friendly. Cotton and cotton blend sweaters are another great choice since they’re soft, breathable, and easy to wash. Many sweaters are made from a blend of fabrics, including synthetics like viscose and acrylic, which drape nicely and tend to be somewhat stain-resistant .

Next, you’ll want to think about style. Since even lightweight sweaters can take up more space in your bag, you’ll want to choose an option that’s cozy enough to wear on travel days, but chic enough to wear out to museums and restaurants. Open-front cardigans and poncho-style wrap sweaters are great choices because they’re super versatile and can often double as a light jacket, saving you even more room in your luggage.

If your travels tend to include outdoor adventures, look for a sweater with a simple, sporty style that layers well. Classic fitted crewneck and turtleneck sweaters can take you from scenic hikes to wandering through bookshops, while slouchy, oversized styles are better for lounging and more fashion-forward looks.

Most importantly, you’ll want to make sure that you choose a sweater you love, since you’ll probably be wearing it in photos you’ll look back on for years to come. Keep scrolling to see some of the best travel sweaters you can buy on Amazon right now.

One fan raved: “I purchased this sweater in all four color options that were available at the time. I love bulky sweaters, but for some reason bulky sweaters don’t like me. This sweater is wonderful. It’s bulky but not smothering. The open weave allows just enough air flow that can be worn alone or in layers [...] And the length is great for leggings. Nice sweater.”

The brand notes that this sweater should be hand washed in order to keep it looking its best.

One fan raved : “This sweater (which I have in both black and navy) is a GREAT sweater at a great price! I bought these sweaters for a trip to Europe and the Middle East where I would be facing varying climates. I did not want to spend a lot on them because I knew they would face heavy wear during the trip. This sweater was perfect as it kept me warm in cold or windy weather and cool in hot weather. It wore very well despite the ardors of travel and held it shape despite being balled up and tied around my waist at times. It did not pull, snag, or pill.”

From ultra-soft cashmere to chunky cable-knit, we’ve got you covered.

  • Why Trust T+L

Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

Cardigans are nothing new, but they're having a moment, especially in the world of travel apparel. Why? These button-down sweaters are endlessly versatile. You can wear them unbuttoned, partially buttoned, layered over other shirts, and with anything from jeans and leggings to dresses, athleisure, and professional attire.

I often opt for a long, slightly oversized cardigan on travel days because it's easy to throw on when I need an extra layer of warmth or to tie around my waist if I get too hot. This type of sweater is also seasonless and ideal for transitional weather, when you're unsure if you'll be just fine in a tee or tank, might get chilly later, or want some light outerwear after the sun goes down.

With style, fit, material, and care requirements in mind, we found the best cardigans to pack on your next trip.

Best Overall

Everlane the organic cotton relaxed cardigan.

It can be worn several ways and layered over other tops to complete an outfit or add warmth.

Hand washing and air drying are recommended to prevent shrinking and misshaping this sweater.

If I could only pick one cardigan to bring on a trip, it would be this one from Everlane. The relaxed fit is ideal for layering over other tops, like T-shirts, tanks, and bodysuits. I can wear it buttoned up, unbuttoned, draped over my shoulders, or tied around my waist.

I also like how the dropped shoulders provide a modern touch to an otherwise classic sweater. The chunky knitted material gives this cardigan some texture without being so bulky that it's impractical to pack in a suitcase . The brand suggests hand washing and laying it flat to dry to prevent shrinking or misshaping, but you can wear it multiple times between washes and shouldn't have to worry about wrinkles.

The Details: XS to 2X | Organic cotton

Best Lightweight

Gap lightweight cashsoft cardigan.

This super-soft, breathable sweater folds or rolls compactly for packing while resisting wrinkles.

The material is meant to feel like cashmere but doesn't contain any cashmere.

Looking for something lighter or less bulky? The Gap's CashSoft Cardigan might be just the thing. The cashmere-like material (a blend of cotton, polyester, and nylon) is ultra-soft, airy, and breathable.

With a regular fit that falls just below the waist, this sweater can be worn on its own or layered over a fitted tank or cami. I also like how the relatively thin fabric folds up compactly while resisting wrinkles.

The Details: XXS to 2X | Cotton, polyester, nylon

Best With Pockets

L.l.bean women's classic cashmere button-front.

I like the longer cut, layerability, and pockets, plus the cashmere repels odors, allowing me to wear it multiple times between washes.

Hand washing or dry cleaning is recommended, but you don't have to clean it after every wash.

I have this L.L.Bean cardigan in black and can tell you it's truly perfect for travel. The extra-long cut covers my backside, so I can wear it with leggings, layered over a T-shirt — a go-to outfit for flying. It also works with jeans, shorts, and maxi dresses. The pockets come in handy when I'm on the go, too.

This sweater is made of 100 percent cashmere. Though you'll need to take special care when cleaning it, the naturally antimicrobial material kills odor-causing bacteria, so you can wear it at least a few times between washes — and pack fewer items for your trip.

The Details: XS to 3X | Mongolian cashmere

Best Short-sleeve

Reformation cashmere cardigan.

This warm-weather sweater pairs well with shorts, skirts, and linen pants, and the cashmere resists odors and wrinkles.

The size range isn't very broad.

Reformation's Claire Cardigan is great for warmer weather. You can rock this short-sleeve sweater on its own with shorts, skirts, linen pants, or jeans. The relaxed fit can also be layered over a silk cami or ribbed tank.

Since this cardigan is loomed from odor-resistant cashmere, you can wear it multiple times while traveling without having to wash it. It shouldn't wrinkle in your suitcase, either. We also appreciate that 95 percent of the cashmere is recycled.

The Details: XS to XL | Recycled cashmere, cashmere

Best Extra-long

Quince cashmere duster cardigan sweater.

You can throw it on when you get cold on a flight, easily tuck it into a bag, and wear it year-round with various outfits.

It doesn't have buttons or pockets.

This one's more like a wrap than a traditional cardigan. While it doesn't have buttons or pockets, the extra-long silhouette makes it very versatile and a stellar choice for travel days. You can throw it on when you get chilly and easily take it off when going through TSA. And since the fabric isn't too thick, you can tuck it into your bag if needed.

This duster-style sweater is seasonless. You can wear it with anything from jeans and leggings to twill shorts and a slip dress. It could even work as a swimsuit cover-up — poolside, that is (we don't recommend bringing cashmere to the beach).

The Details: XS to XL | Mongolian cashmere

Best Cropped

Abercrombie & fitch cable short cardigan.

The shorter length works well with high-rise pants or skirts, and the cable-knit weave is truly timeless.

It's machine washable, but you'll want to lay it flat to dry.

This A&F cardigan flaunts a cropped cut that falls an inch or so below the belly button on most women. You can wear it with high-waisted jeans or dress pants, either tucked in or loose, depending on the rise.

The chunky cable weave is truly timeless, and unlike longer, slouchier cable-knit sweaters, the shorter length makes it wearable year-round. Just a heads up, you can put this sweater in your washing machine, but be sure to reshape it and lay it flat to dry to avoid shrinking and pilling.

The Details: XXS to XL | Cotton, viscose, nylon

Best Oversized

Alo scholar cardigan sweater.

I’m all about the boxy cut, dropped shoulders, and subtle preppy details.

It's a unisex cut, so it'll run bigger than most women's sweaters.

Alo's Scholar Cardigan is everything we want in an oversized sweater: a boxy cut, a slightly longer length, and dropped shoulders. True to its name, it also has a few subtle preppy details, like ribbed cuffs and a low-V neckline with a four-button front.

This travel-ready cardigan adds a layer of warmth to any ensemble — from joggers and jeans to athleisure and professional attire. One thing to note is that it's a unisex fit, so (beyond being oversized) it runs bigger than most women's sweaters.

The Details: S to 2X | Cotton, nylon

Best Machine Washable

Boden catriona cotton cardigan.

This classic crewneck cardigan is not only low-maintenance but also wrinkle-resistant and easy to pack.

You may still want to air dry it to preserve the shape and prevent shrinking.

This option from Boden is, for the most part, a classic cardigan — with a crew neckline, a straight fit, and a hip-length cut. But the pointelle details on the cuffs, collar, and hem add subtle interest.

Another reason to love this sweater? It's conveniently machine washable. What's more, the breathable cotton blend has just enough stretch to make it durable and wrinkle-resistant. Since it's relatively thin, it rolls or folds compactly in a suitcase without creasing.

The Details: XS to XL | Cotton, polyamide, elastane

Best Wrinkle-resistant

Athleta advantage sweater.

The Tencel lyocell blend holds its shape to keep creases at bay, plus it's incredibly soft and lightweight.

It has a zipper closure instead of traditional buttons.

If you're looking for something that definitely won't wrinkle in your luggage or on your body, we recommend the Athleta Advantage Sweater. It's made primarily from Tencel lyocell, which is known to hold its shape and resist creasing while maintaining a smooth drape.

Elevating the material's inherent breathability, the fabric is perforated to increase airflow. While this sweater has a zip front instead of buttons, the sporty yet sophisticated style is exceptionally versatile, pairing effortlessly with trousers, joggers, and tennis skirts.

The Details: XXS to XL | Tencel lyocell, polyester

Best Everyday

Cozy earth oversized classic cardigan.

This drapey cardigan is just the thing for flights, long car rides, evening outings, and daily wear.

The brand recommends hand washing, but I've machine washed it without issues.

I have this sweater in heather gray and can't get enough of the slightly heavy, drapey design that virtually never wrinkles. With dropped shoulders and a longer length, it's the ideal extra layer for in-between weather. I often wear it over a tee with yoga pants or a tank top tucked into jeans.

This cardigan is good for long car rides, plane flights, and evening outings that may not call for a proper coat. Though Cozy Earth suggests hand washing, I've run it through a delicate washer cycle a few times without any issues.

The Details: XS to XL | Bamboo viscose, modal, nylon

Best V-neck

Michael stars fran cropped cardigan.

The open neckline and hip-length cut are suitable for warm-weather outfits and in-between seasons.

Wash it with cool water and let it air dry to avoid shrinking the fabric.

The Michael Stars Fran Cardigan has a hip-length cut and an open (but not too low) V neckline. I reach for this sweater to finish off warmer-weather ensembles but would absolutely wear it year-round.

Since it's 100 percent cotton, you'll want to wash it with cold water, then carefully reshape it and let it air dry to prevent shrinking the knitted fabric.

The Details: XS to XL | Cotton

Best Budget

Amazon essentials women's lightweight crewneck cardigan sweater.

Available in 26 colors and 12 sizes, this affordable sweater is packable, crease-resistant, and easy to layer.

Some colors may not look like they do online, but you're probably safe with the neutrals.

On a budget? This wallet-friendly cardigan from Amazon checks many boxes for travel apparel. It's lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, packable, versatile, and layerable.

Slightly fitted with long sleeves and a crew neckline, it comes in nearly 30 colors, ranging from everyday neutrals to vibrant shades and trendy hues. And the inclusive size range goes all the way up to 6X.

The Details: XS to 6X | Cotton, modal, polyester

Tips for Buying Cardigans for Travel

Look for travel-friendly features.

When shopping for a cardigan you'd like to bring on a trip, look for travel-friendly features—which you will most likely find browsing top travel clothing brands . For instance, wrinkle-resistant fabrics don't need to be ironed or steamed and won't crease in your suitcase. Ideally, they'll also roll or fold compactly to take up minimal luggage space.

Odor-resistant materials, such as wool, cashmere, and some performance fabrics are good, too. You can wear them multiple times on your trip with different outfits and ultimately pack fewer garments. Pockets can also come in handy when traveling, a feature you may find on some longer cardigans.

Prioritize versatility

The best cardigans for travel can be styled with multiple outfits. They can be worn on their own or layered over different tops, like tanks, camis, tees, and bodysuits. Besides layerability, we recommend getting a neutral, seasonless hue, like black, brown, gray, navy, taupe, or olive. Breathability also adds versatility to a sweater because you can wear it year-round without overheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best way to pack a cardigan is usually to fold it and place it either in the main compartment of your suitcase or compressed within a packing cube. More delicate sweaters, like cashmere or cable-knit designs, should probably be placed loosely on top of your packed main compartment to prevent snagging the fabric. While knits can be more finicky than other clothing items, the good thing is that they generally don't wrinkle.

The proper way to care for your cardigan depends on the material and knitting style. Some can be machine washed on a delicate cycle with cold or warm water, and others call for hand washing or dry cleaning. After washing, it's usually best to carefully reshape the sweater and lay it flat to dry. (Some can be hung, but you'll want to be careful about puckering the shoulders with a clothes hanger.)

Escalier Lapel Blazer | Sizes S-2X

Escalier Summer Jackets Womens Faux Leather Style

If you want a casual summer jacket for a city break that you can layer or wear when any chill hits, this Escalier faux leather beauty has a 4.5 rating on Amazon! With an open front design, it feels more like a blazer than a heavy, bulky item and users say it’s light yet perfect to throw on when the mood strikes.

It may seem like faux leather isn’t a good pick for warmer months, but as long as you’re choosing something lightweight and thin, this material works well in summer! Just don’t wear it in sweltering temperatures and you’ll be set. This lovely jacket is available in sizes S-2X .

I am curious if you know anyone who has traveled to Poland in late Spring? I know the temperatures are not much above 70 degrees; therefore, I planned on packing one pair of pants, leggings and maybe a skirt. As far as tops a couple long sleeve tee shirts, light weight sweater and a jacket to start. After reading many of the posts it is suggested to wear boots and pack one other comfortable pair of shoes. Any suggestions??

alex

Hi Phyllis! It sounds like layering is your best bet. Also, make looks clothing plans now but watch the forecast as it gets closer to your trip to determine if you’ll need additional cold weather layers. Boots are always a great way to keep your feet warm. Whether they’re tall or short depends on if it’s raining, snowing, or dry. I’m going to post your question on the Facebook page to see if we can get more feedback for you. Keep an eye out here: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl

have a great trip!
