Best Mediterranean cruises in 2024 and 2025

Fran Golden

The Mediterranean region has it all — amazing food and wine, famous historical and cultural landmarks, scenic seaside towns and gorgeous island beaches.

You'd be hard-pressed to experience Spain , France , Italy and Greece on one land tour without transportation issues. A Mediterranean cruise, however, is the perfect way to get a taste of many coastal countries with ease; you can transit between destinations while you sleep aboard your ship.

Most cruise lines operate trips in the Mediterranean over the summer, whether on tiny ships with a few hundred passengers or giant megaships with several thousand people. Some vessels even sail the region year-round.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Most Mediterranean cruises focus on one region (usually the eastern or western halves of the coastline), but longer itineraries might encompass more. While choosing a ship is important, so is picking which route to take and which countries you want to see.

Consider what's on your bucket list. Cruise lines offer a variety of options, making it possible for culture vultures, beach lovers, history buffs and family travelers to prioritize different ports of call and onboard amenities.

Here are some of the best Mediterranean cruises departing in 2024 and 2025 to whet your appetite for a European adventure by sea.

Best cruise for romantics: Windstar Cruises in the rivieras

best mediterranean cruises june 2024

For romance seekers, few experiences beat a cruise that lingers along the French and Italian rivieras. France's Cote d'Azur, with its coastal mountains and crystal blue sea, has inspired artists and romantics for centuries. The equally stunning Italian coast is perfect for a romantic stroll around secluded harbors and an indulgent, delectable lunch at a table for two overlooking the ocean.

Another popular port of call on riviera itineraries is Monaco, where you might visit the royal palace of the Grimaldi family and stop by the glamorous Monte Carlo Casino to pretend you are James Bond enjoying a night on the town.

You'll find these cruises on small and luxury ships. Our pick for romance is Windstar Cruises ' seven-night "Yachtsman's Harbors of the Rivieras" sailing between Rome and Barcelona (or vice versa) on multiple spring, summer and fall dates in 2024 and 2025.

The five-masted Wind Surf is as picture-perfect as the ports you'll visit, and the 342-passenger ship can follow all the luxury yachts into smaller harbors and off-the-beaten-track destinations. Your onboard meals, with many dishes created by James Beard-affiliated chefs, might even rival the fresh Mediterranean cuisine you'll find in port.

Ports of call vary by sailing date but can include Port-Vendres, Sanary-sur-Mer and Cannes, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; and Portofino and Portoferraio, Italy. For the ultimate riviera experience, book one of Windstar's Prix du Monde sailings with exclusive access to the Formula One racing events.

Best cruise for budget-conscious travelers: Celestyal Cruises in the Greek islands

best mediterranean cruises june 2024

Visiting the Greek islands is a magical experience. Lessons in ancient history and the development of Western civilization come to life surrounded by astounding natural beauty.

Your jaw might drop as your ship navigates the sunken caldera that leads to Santorini, where whitewashed villages dot the tops of steep cliffs. In Mykonos, you can head to one of the island's famous beaches or catch a ferry to explore the ancient ruins of Delos, known as the birthplace of Apollo. Budget-conscious travelers can skip the tours and stroll the narrow streets and city walls Rhodes' Old Town.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise tips to enhance your European vacation

For less pricey ways to see the Greek islands, consider Celestyal Cruises ; it sails three- and four-night minicruises in addition to affordable one-week sailings. A four-night cruise packs a lot into a short sailing with visits to Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion and Santorini, as well as Kusadasi, Turkey. Don't forget to spend time in Athens before or after your cruise.

Celestyal's two ships carry between 1,200 and 1,700 passengers. You'll enjoy all the amenities of a large cruise ship — such as multiple pools, restaurants and bars, and spa and fitness facilities — without feeling inundated with many thousands of fellow cruisers.

Best cruise for history lovers: Viking in the Eastern Mediterranean

best mediterranean cruises june 2024

Eastern Mediterranean cruises of a week or more immerse you in multiple ancient civilizations. They take you to the historical places you have traveled to see, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Extraordinary itineraries visit Athens for the Acropolis, Istanbul for the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace, and Kusadasi for the impressive ancient city of Ephesus and sites associated with the Virgin Mary. Dubrovnik, Croatia's medieval Old Town (a filming location for HBO's "Game of Thrones") will wow you. From Naples, Italy, you can explore the ancient city of Pompeii.

Cruises that start or end in Rome will treat you to such sights as the Colosseum and the Vatican.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

True history lovers will not be satisfied with only a week in this rich landscape. Choose Viking for your Eastern Mediterranean cruise, and look for longer itineraries, such as the 15-day "Ancient Mediterranean Antiquities" sailings throughout 2024, 2025 and 2026. The one-way sailing between Rome and Istanbul hits most of the ancient civilization highlights: Naples and Sicily, Italy; Rhodes, Crete and Athens, Greece; and Ephesus, Troy and Istanbul, Turkey.

Viking also offers complimentary shore excursions in every port, so you'll have access to knowledgeable guides who can explain the historical sites you're touring. On board, you'll find a comfortable home base on Viking's 930-passenger identical ships, with multiple included dining venues, inviting lounges with Scandinavian-inspired decor, and comfortable cabins with thoughtful details, such as quiet-closing drawers and heated bathroom floors.

Best cruise for explorers: Celebrity Cruises in the Holy Land

best mediterranean cruises june 2024

Note: Many cruise lines have altered Holy Land itineraries for 2024 to exclude Israel or canceled the sailings completely. However, most lines still have Holy Land voyages, including Israel, on their schedules for 2025.

Travelers who really want to double down on the ancient civilizations should look for longer Eastern Mediterranean cruises that combine Greece, Turkey and Italy with port calls in Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Depending on the specific Holy Land itinerary, you might see Cairo and the pyramids of Giza, Jordan's ancient rose-hewed rock city of Petra, and biblical locations in and around Jerusalem.

Celebrity Cruises is a terrific choice for your Holy Land cruise, as the company offers 10- and 11-night Egypt and Israel sailings. For example, a 10-night, round-trip Athens cruise visits Haifa and Ashdod, Israel (for Jerusalem) and Alexandria, Egypt; it has overnights in each port except Haifa. The extra time in port allows for overnight tours, so you can venture farther into each country to see all the key sites. The 11-night version adds a stop in Kusadasi for a visit to Ephesus.

Celebrity's ships are known for their foodie culture, with multiple specialty restaurants, as well as a happening bar scene. (Do not miss the martini flights.) With a range of rooms, from windowless inside cabins to comfortable suites, you can tour the Holy Land at any price point.

Best cruise for culture vultures: Norwegian Cruise Line in the Western Mediterranean

best mediterranean cruises june 2024

For foodies, fashionistas and art lovers, it's hard to top a Western Mediterranean cruise to the renowned resort towns and famed coastal cities of Italy, France and Spain.

This is your opportunity to see Antoni Gaudi's fantastical Sagrada Familia church and other creations in Barcelona; visit Michelangelo's David sculpture and other Renaissance treasures in Florence, Italy; learn about the iconic film festival in dreamy Cannes, France; and stroll through the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik.

You can shop for Italian, French and Spanish designer fashion when you're not dining on the best Italian pasta and gelato you've ever tasted (or bouillabaisse and escargot in France, or paella and tapas in Spain). All are accompanied by local wines, of course.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of Western Mediterranean cruises to key ports in Spain, Italy and France. Norwegian Escape sails the Mediterranean in the spring and fall of 2025. It offers 10- and 11-night cruises that call on a variety of major ports.

For example, 11-night cruises on select dates in 2025 sail from Barcelona to Trieste, Italy. They visit Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Cannes; Florence, Rome, Naples and Taormina (Messina), Italy; Valletta, Malta; Corfu, Greece; and Dubrovnik and Split, Croatia.

It's a shame that the itinerary has no sea days because the ship offers plenty to keep cruisers busy on board. There's a wealth of dining options, from a French date-night restaurant to a tapas bar. There's also a water park, a ropes course and a spa with a salt room and a snow room.

Best cruise for families: Royal Caribbean in the Mediterranean

best mediterranean cruises june 2024

When looking for a cruise with children , you'll want to have a mix of time exploring on land and time playing on the ship. Ships offer kids clubs as well as attractions like video arcades and waterslides. Look for an itinerary that includes one or more fun-filled days at sea.

Kids will enjoy such sights as the Colosseum, where they might pretend that they are gladiators; the flower market in Nice, France; and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (on a shore excursion from Livorno, Italy). They will also enjoy visiting the beaches in the Greek islands and eating pizza in Naples. If you can find a cruise that includes the Italian seaside villages of Cinque Terre (accessible from Genoa, Livorno and Portofino), fans of Disney's animated feature "Luca" will be ecstatic.

Family favorite Royal Caribbean has a variety of ships and itineraries sailing around Europe, but a top option for 2025 is a seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise aboard Allure of the Seas. The round-trip itinerary departs from Rome. Additional ports of call include Naples and La Spezia, Italy (for Florence); Palma de Mallorca; and Marseille, France.

Family-friendly entertainment on board is plentiful. On sea days, you can access three main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The hottest Mediterranean cruises for summer 2024

Listing the hottest Mediterranean Cruises for summer 2024

If you’re looking for an unforgettable family vacation, a Mediterranean cruise is an excellent choice. These affordable cruises offer the opportunity to visit multiple destinations while enjoying luxurious amenities on board.

The Mediterranean is divided into two regions, the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. Each region offers a variety of cruise itineraries to choose from. A Western Mediterranean cruise will take you to popular ports such as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, Rome and Naples in Italy, or Marseille and Cannes in France. On the other hand, an Eastern Mediterranean cruise will take you to stunning gems like Venice in Italy or Athens and the breathtaking islands of Santorini and Mykonos in Greece.

With so many itineraries and cruise lines to choose from, finding the perfect cruise adventure can be overwhelming. That’s where we come in. Our suggestions will inspire you to find the perfect cruise that meets your needs, and exceeds your expectations.

Quick navigation

Book early for the best deals, then monitor your cruise price

Embarking on a dream vacation to explore ancient towns like Athens in Greece, the sun-soaked coastline of Croatia, or charming Italian villages is an experience of a lifetime. To ensure you don’t miss out on these popular itineraries, booking your cruise early is best as they tend to fill up quickly.

Even if you’ve already booked your cruise, saving money is still possible. You can track your cruise fare and contact the cruise line to take advantage of any price decreases. By doing so, you can ensure that you get the best deal possible and make the most of your dream vacation.

Choose your cruise line and cruise ship

Several popular cruise lines offer outstanding itineraries as you plan your Mediterranean cruise for summer 2024.

MSC Cruises offers some of the best prices for Mediterranean cruises, starting at just $119 for cruises from Marseille, $299 from Athens-Piraeus, and $189 from Palma de Mallorca. However, we recommend choosing one of their newest cruise ships for the best possible cruise experience.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises are two of the most popular family cruise lines, offering something for every type of traveler in their 2024/2025 cruise season. While they may be pricier than MSC Cruises, the entertainment and dining options on board are among the best among large cruise lines at sea.

If you’re looking for a brand new ship for your 2024 Mediterranean cruise, consider Princess Cruises. Their newest and largest ship, the Sun Princess, will debut in February 2024. Planning and Booking Mediterranean Cruises

Choosing the right cruise.

When planning your Mediterranean cruise for summer 2024, it’s crucial to consider your preferences and interests. With numerous cruise lines offering unique itineraries and amenities, take your time to research and find the one that suits you best.

A luxury or ultra-luxury cruise line may be the perfect option if you prefer to get away from large cruise ships and crowds. Oceania Cruises is an excellent example of a luxury cruise line offering new Mediterranean itineraries in 2024 that focus on immersive experiences in the region.

When choosing the right cruise, consider the following points:

  • Destinations and ports of call
  • Cruise duration
  • Ship size and amenities
  • Onboard activities and excursions

By considering these factors, you can ensure that you choose the perfect Mediterranean cruise that caters to your preferences and interests.

Cruise Discounts

Everyone loves a good deal, and cruising is no exception. Don’t be afraid to hunt for special offers and discounts when looking for your perfect Mediterranean cruise. Here are a few tips to help you save some money while planning your dream voyage:

  • Book Early:  Cruise lines tend to offer the best deals when itineraries are first released. Booking 6-12 months ahead will often result in a better price.
  • Travel During Shoulder Seasons:  Spring and autumn tend to be less crowded, and cruise lines may offer more attractive pricing.
  • Utilize Loyalty Programs:  Returning customers may have access to exclusive discounts through loyalty programs offered by cruise lines.
  • Look for Last-Minute Deals : Cruise lines often discount unsold cabins as the departure date approaches. Be flexible with your travel dates, and watch for these cruise deals .

Now that you better understand choosing the right cruise and finding cruise discounts, you are one step closer to enjoying a fantastic Mediterranean cruise in the summer of 2024. Remember, thoroughly researching and booking early will ensure you have the best possible experience.

Shore Excursions

Popular shore tours.

Some of the best experiences during your Mediterranean cruise will be getting off the ship and exploring incredible destinations. You don’t have to book a ship shore excursion. If you still want a knowledgeable guide but joining a tour bus in a large group is not your style, consider booking an independent shore excursion with a trusted external supplier. We love the tours offered by Viator , ToursByLocals, and Italytours.EU and some of our most memorable trips have been booked with these suppliers.

Independent Sightseeing

Consider independent sightseeing during your Mediterranean cruise if you prefer a more leisurely exploration. With several ports filled with diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, you can easily rent a bike, do your own walking tour, or take public transportation to experience each location at your own pace.

Check out our “Essential Guide” series and itinerary ideas about how to make the most of your time in the most popular port cities. We offer detailed itineraries, including must-see sights, transport and cruise port tips, and more. Click on our “ Essential Guide ” section and find the port you are most interested in.

Packing and Travel Tips

What to pack.

When preparing for your Mediterranean cruise in the summer of 2024, it’s important to pack smartly to enjoy your vacation fully. Here are some essential items to include in your luggage:

  • Clothes : Pack light, comfortable clothes suitable for warm weather, like T-shirts, shorts, and dresses. Bring a few swimwear sets, as you’ll likely spend time by the pool or at the beach. For evenings, pack some dressier outfits for dinners and events onboard. Don’t forget a lightweight sweater or jacket for cooler nights or visiting places with strict dress codes, such as churches or historic sites.
  • Footwear : Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you’ll likely be exploring various ports and taking shore excursions. Pack swimming shoes or flip-flops for around the pool and on the beach, and your favorite shoes for evening events.
  • Accessories : Bring a sun hat, sunglasses, and a light scarf to protect yourself from the sun. Consider bringing a small backpack or tote bag for carrying your essentials while you’re off the ship.
  • Toiletries : Travel-sized sunscreen is crucial, along with your regular toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. You may also want to pack a small bottle of bug spray.
  • Electronics : Your portable phone charger, a camera, and any necessary chargers for your devices. Additionally, pack a cruise-compliant power strip , especially if you are many in a cabin and all need to use power points simultaneously!
  • Essentials : Don’t forget to pack your necessary medications, a copy of your passport, travel insurance documents, and a credit card for emergencies.
  • Extras : A small, lightweight umbrella or raincoat can be handy, as sudden showers might occur in the Mediterranean region.

By packing with these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your Mediterranean cruise. Just remember to pack light and focus on the essentials, so you can fully embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle during your vacation. Click here for a complete and more detailed packing guide.

Best Mediterranean Cruises for 2024

Guest Post

Mediterranean itineraries have become increasingly popular among both seasoned cruisers and first-time cruise travelers.

Some even say that visiting the Mediterranean by cruise ship is the best way to see and experience the region.

So what are the best Mediterranean cruises for 2024?  Below I listed the best of the best for each type of traveler.

Viking ocean cruise ship in Meditereanean

It’s no wonder, as the Mediterranean has plenty to offer – exquisite food, favorable weather, countless beaches and coastal towns, and a rich culture of historical landmarks worth visiting.

When deciding which major cruise line to sail with for your 2024 Mediterranean cruise, it is important to consider what is on your travel bucket list. Different cruise lines will offer a variety of different amenities, experiences, and excursions catered to your preferences.

Here is a complied list of some of the best Mediterranean Cruises for 2024 depending on your travel interests to unlock a memorable vacation experience.

Best Mediterranean Cruise for History Lovers

If uncovering the ancient ruins of the past is on your agenda while on a Mediterranean cruise, Viking Cruises should be on your radar. For over 26 years, Viking has been dedicated to their mission that travel could be more culturally immersive and destination focused.

  Why Viking Cruises?

With a name like ‘Viking’ it should come as no surprise that Viking Cruises has dedicated their fleet to embracing the rich history of different landscapes and various cultures. Viking was founded in 1997 and in 2017, launched its Viking Resident Historian program. This historian, now onboard all Viking ships, provides guests with a professional level historical and cultural education specific to their journey.

This helps guests become immersed in their destination long before their ship arrives in port and is perfect for guests who want a rich, historical experience.

Best Viking Mediterranean Itinerary:

mediterranean sea cruise deals

Viking has dozens of itineraries sailing within their Mediterranean, but their most notable is their ‘Journey to Antiquities’ which includes 8 ports of call throughout Italy, Turkey and Greece. This 8-day sailing for 2 guests costs roughly $7,000, which includes all amenities – meals, drinks, Wi-Fi and even one shore excursion per port, per person.

This itinerary has been favored among guests for not only its onboard experiences, but the unique and iconic shore excursions.

With stops in Italy, guests can marvel at the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Sistine Chapel, Pompeii, and the culture of Naples. Neoclassical architecture is abundant in Greece, and ruins are left to be explored in Turkey.

Viking purposely included the fare of one excursion in the base price of all sailings to encourage each guest to explore their destinations and its rich culture.

Best Mediterranean Cruise for Food and Wine Aficionados:

When it comes to sampling new foods, or savoring tried and true flavors, the best place to do so is onboard a cruise ship. While dining is included in the base fare of most cruise packages, if you’re looking for the best food at sea it is important to know which cruise line to select.

The most seasoned cruisers will know that Oceania is arguably the best in the business when it comes to dining at sea.

best mediterranean cruises june 2024

Why Oceania?

Oceania has built up a solid reputation when it comes to cruise dining, earning themselves the title of ‘The Finest Cuisine at Sea’. Most notably being that they partnered with French chef Jacques Pepin to carefully curate meals for guests onboard at his restaurant, Jacques.

Guests also love the option of anytime dining, which allows for more flexibility within their vacation itinerary, and 24-hour room service.

To further immerse guests in the culture of their sailing, Oceania offers cooking classes onboard for guests for an additional fee. This allows guests to explore different foods of various cultures in an exciting and unique way.

Best Oceania Mediterranean Itinerary:

With so many itineraries, it can be overwhelming to decide which is best for yourself and your travel party. It is helpful to know that Oceania includes the following in the base fare of all sailings:

  • Roundtrip Airfare
  • Airport Transfers
  • $1,600 worth of Shore Excursion Credit
  • Free Champagne, Wine and More
  • Free Gourmet Specialty Dining
  • Free Unlimited Wi-Fi

Some cruise packages will also include free, or discounted hotel stays for before, and/or after your cruise as well.

All sailings with Oceania will feature their upscale, gourmet dining with special nods to the destination that your itinerary is focusing on. For a Mediterranean Cruise in 2024 departing from Venice to Rome for 2 people, you can expect to pay roughly $15,000 for a veranda stateroom. This base fare includes all amenities mentioned.

With ports of call in Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Malta, and a day spent sailing on the Mediterranean Sea, passengers are sure to experience all that the Mediterranean has to offer while indulging in some of the best foods at sea onboard.

Dining Experience on Oceania:

While onboard, guests have the option of dining in a more luxurious atmosphere at any of the several sit-down restaurants or, if a more casual option is preferred, Oceania offers this as well. Dining at any of Oceania’s restaurants, including the specialty locations, is included in the base fare of your cruise.

Alongside the main dining rooms, Oceania’s vessels boast several specialty restaurants ranging from Italian cuisine, to Pan-Asian, and even a signature steakhouse with wine-pairing options.

Passengers have especially appreciated how diverse each menu presentation has been, and how dedicated Oceania has remained to offering a range of cultural dishes specific to the particular sailing.

Best Mediterranean Cruise for Beach Destinations:

The Mediterranean is well known for their lush, white sand beaches and coastal beach towns. Hundreds of thousands of passengers set sail every year to visit the rugged shores of these coastlines where picturesque villages dangle over the Mediterranean Sea.

One of the most visited areas in the Mediterranean is Italy’s Amalfi Coast, which several cruise lines have now curated special itineraries specific to this coastal landscape.

Although most mainstream cruise lines have developed their own Amalfi Coast itinerary, it’s worth exploring which one offers the best experience for your next Mediterranean cruise.

With Celebrity Cruises, passengers can choose from several different itineraries depending on their travel preferences with an opportunity to experience the Amalfi Coast. With ports in Salerno, Positano and Ravello, guests will not run out of options when sailing with Celebrity.

Celebrity Ascent tour of ship

Why Celebrity Cruises?

Celebrity is known for being the cruise line to sail with when visiting multiple ports of call in one sailing. This can be a unique opportunity when embarking on a Mediterranean cruise to a coastal town such as the Amalfi Coast, as it will allow you to visit several destinations.

The Mediterranean encompasses a vast area and is inclusive of several countries. Visiting this destination by cruise ship is especially helpful if you want to gain the most out of your experience.

With Celebrity Cruises offering sailings with the most port of calls, you’ll have the best opportunity to do so on one of their vessels.

Best Celebrity Cruises Itinerary:

For example, on an 11-night sailing, you will visit 10 ports of call throughout the Mediterranean including Rome, Florence, Portofino (Amalfi Coast), Naples, Sicily, Brindisi (Italy), Croatia, Montenegro, and Ravenna (Italy). Celebrity also typically includes sea days in their itineraries to allow guests to enjoy the vessel as part of their destination.

On this sailing, guests can expect to pay roughly $7,500 for two guests in a veranda stateroom. This is inclusive of amenities such as all meals, drinks (including alcohol), Wi-Fi, gratuities, and all taxes, fees and port expenses.

Guests have the option to visit Italy’s coastline at two ports of call: Portofino, which is the Amalfi Coast, and at Ravenna, which has nine (9) seaside resorts to visit. Both Croatia and Montenegro also have several beaches situated near Celebrity’s cruise ship port that are worth visiting if seeing the world’s best beaches is on your bucket list.

Final Thoughts

When planning your visit to the Mediterranean it’s worth considering taking a cruise to ensure you can experience all that it has to offer. The Mediterranean is a region packed full of rich experiences, differing cultures, historical architecture, beautiful beaches, and endless food and drink.

Regardless of what experience you’re looking to get out of your Mediterranean vacation, there is sure to be a cruise line such as Viking, Oceania, or Celebrity with an itinerary fit for your preferences. Both cruises and the Mediterranean alike are ideal travel destinations for adults, children and families with something for everyone to enjoy.

An insider tip is still to choose the start of your journey in Valletta on Malta. Malta lies between Sicily and North Africa and is marked by the many conquests by the Romans and the French.  Malta is very popular for its lagoons and it is worthwhile spending a few days here after a Mediterranean cruise.

Historical insights, cultural highlights and fine beaches along the Mediterranean

During your Mediterranean cruise, there is not only plenty of entertainment on board your ship. Even in the countries that are visited, you can  discover cultural peculiarities and take a look at the history of the vibrant cities It is also a great opportunity to experience Mediterranean flair and culinary delights at its best! In Barcelona, be sure to visit the imposing Sagrada Familia church or admire contemporary art exhibitions and discover the works of Miro at the Fundació Joan Miro. For a shopping trip to Spain's metropolis, La Rocca Village is the place to be, as this outlet centre is a must if you’re looking for a good bargain!

No less historical is a landing in Rome, where St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica are always worth a visit. You may even experience a public reception with the Pope. The remains of the Colosseum or the Roman Forum still bear witness to the ancient power of the Roman Empire. Or you could visit the world-famous Trevi Fountain in the heart of Rome to make a wish. A coin thrown over the shoulder into the water should fulfill the wish of the thrower.

On the Balearic island of Mallorca, cruise guests can expect a picturesque landscape. Take a detour off the beaten track to appreciate the almond blossom in Spring. You can also take a tour along the Mallorcan wine route. On this day trip you can taste the fine drops of the island and enjoy beautiful views of the water while you sit on one of the wineries. Key Takeaways

  • Consider the length of the cruise when choosing a Mediterranean cruise for 2024 to explore specific regions or multiple destinations in-depth.
  • Select a cruise ship based on your preferences, whether larger for more amenities or smaller luxury ships for a more intimate experience.
  • Determine your budget by considering factors like the time of year, cabin type, and onboard amenities to align with your financial plan.
  • Top Mediterranean cruise destinations for adults in 2024 offer a blend of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery such as the Greek Isles, French and Italian Riviera, Egypt, Turkey, and the Adriatic Sea.
  • Choose from luxury, mid-range, or adventure cruise lines that cater to different preferences and budgets for an enhanced Mediterranean cruise experience.
  • Onboard experiences tailored for adults include culinary delights, adult-only pools and spa facilities, evening entertainment, and casino nights to elevate your voyage.

Choosing Your Perfect Mediterranean Cruise

Consider the length of the cruise.

When choosing your ideal Mediterranean cruise for 2024, it’s essential to consider the length of the journey. Opt for a longer cruise if you want to explore multiple destinations in-depth. A week-long cruise allows you to visit popular ports like Barcelona, Venice, or Athens, while a shorter three to five-day itinerary may focus on specific regions such as the French Riviera or the Greek Islands.

Types of Ships and Experiences

Select a cruise ship that matches your preferences and travel style. Larger vessels offer a variety of onboard amenities, including spas, multiple dining options, and entertainment venues. They are ideal if you prefer a bustling atmosphere with more choices. On the other hand, smaller luxury ships provide a more intimate experience with personalized service, gourmet dining, and exclusive shore excursions, perfect for a relaxed and sophisticated journey.

Determining Your Budget

To find the best Mediterranean cruise that fits your budget in 2024, consider factors like the time of year, cabin type, and onboard amenities. Off-peak months typically offer lower prices, while booking a standard cabin instead of a suite can help you save on costs. Keep in mind additional expenses such as gratuities, excursions, and drinks onboard. Set a clear budget and explore cruise options that align with your financial plan for a stress-free and enjoyable vacation at sea.

The series begins with a 30-day “half-circumnavigation” of Antarctica aboard the luxury icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot , starting in South America and wrapping in New Zealand.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The new Regent Seven Seas Grandeur is headed for the Caribbean and then Europe, but will return to the U.S. in the fall for a series of scenic New England cruises that also hit New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Quebec.

Scenic’s latest expedition ship, Scenic Eclipse II , will head for New Zealand in late 2024, where it will do two-week itineraries that navigate the fjords and offer plenty of pulse-quickening adventures like jet-boat and helicopter tours along the way.

Seabourn Pursuit

The line's Seabourn Pursuit will be sailing the South Pacific come 2024. In April and August, it will offer itineraries that focus on the history of World War II, with visits to islands involved in the conflict, including Chuuk and Guadalcanal.

The latest Silversea ship, Silver Nova , will spend the summer cruising the Inside Passage between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska. In the fall it heads to Asia for trips that include a 16-day Tokyo-to-Singapore swing.

Courtesy of Silversea

Viking Venus , one of the line’s newest ocean vessels, will spend the first part of 2024 chasing the northern lights in Scandinavia, with stops in places such as Bergen and Tromsö, Norway.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages will hit some in-demand Mediterranean destinations next summer, including Cannes, France, and the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Mallorca, on a series of sails on the Scarlet Lady .

Windstar Cruises

A longtime partner of the James Beard Foundation, Windstar Cruises has two chef-led itineraries on the books for 2024: one goes around the Iberian Peninsula to France and Ireland, and the other cruises the Dalmatian Coast and western Greece.

Highlights of quiet season mediterranean.

For many travelers, fall and winter are the best times to visit the Mediterranean. The cities and villages of the coast put on a different face. Vineyards are put to bed after the harvest, the bustle has died down and the vast open squares of great cities can be seen in their more natural state: as an uncrowded gathering spot for locals, not for tourists. Visit in the quiet season and see the Mediterranean in a different light. Here are a few ways you will enjoy your journey:

  • Take in the sites more fully at a more relaxed pace
  • Linger at places that interest you, with fewer crowds to navigate
  • Enjoy more comfortable touring in cooler air
  • Celebrate a holiday in one of the world’s most appealing regions
  • Delight to festive lights and markets during the holiday season

Stroll down Front Street in Hamilton, where you’ll find colorful upscale shops selling local art, luxury clothing brands, and jewelry.
