WHAT IS THE COMMITMENTS MUSICAL ABOUT?

The Commitments Musical  is a fantastically feel good celebration of soul. Returning to tour the UK and Ireland 6 years after a phenomenally successful, record breaking run in London’s West End and subsequent sell-out tour.  

The Commitments is based on the BAFTA award-winning film classic.  It received universal critical acclaim following its London World Premiere and was quickly hailed as a smash hit musical sensation.

The Commitments tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working-class music fan, who transforms an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians into an amazing live act, which becomes the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced. Placing a classified advert in a music paper, Jimmy auditions a number of wannabes before finalsing the members of his new band, which he names ‘The Commitments’.

Humour kicks in as the band get to know each other and their instruments, grappling with inter-group differences as they muddle their way through early rehearsals for the band’s first gig. Just as they improve and begin to get a name for themselves, they combust.

The backing singers are more interested in the middle-aged horn playing legend, the singer has entered Eurovision, the drummer has walked out mid-gig and the saxophone player has dangerous leanings towards a jazz career.

Featuring over 20 soul classics performed live on stage including:  Try A Little Tenderness, Mustang Sally, Knock On Wood,  River Deep, Mountain High, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Save Me, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, In The Midnight Hour and more!

The Commitments - or, to name them more precisely, The Stars from The Commitments, are technically speaking a tribute band; like Spinal Tap, for instance, they were formed out of a film of the same name, the 1991 adaptation of the Roddy Doyle novel of the same name. Cast members Dick Massey and Kenneth McCluskey were the founders of the real-life live act, after performing in the band in the film; the movie saw a disgruntled Irish musician put together a stunningly effective soul band that, despite their brilliance on stage, were often at loggerheads off of it. The soundtrack to the movie featured classic soul songs like Otis Redding’s ‘Try a Little Tenderness’, Al Green’s ‘Take Me to the River’, Aretha Franklin’s ‘I Never Loved a Man’ and Wilson Pickett’s ‘In the Midnight Hour’, and it was those tracks that the live band, bolstered by the critical and commercial success of the movie, would go on to play. In an enthralling case of life imitating art, they’d go on to perform live with the likes of B.B. King, Sam Moore, Pickett himself, Ben E. King, and even the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown; I think we can call that mission accomplished.

The show has been adapted from the novel by Doyle and tells the story of working class lad Jimmy Rabbitte who pulls together an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians and friends to become the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced. Jimmy puts an ad in the newspaper and auditions a number of wannabes before forming  The Commitments. The musical takes you through the early stages of the band getting to know each other and their instruments, through early rehearsals to their first gig. But just as they begin to get a name for themselves the backing singers are all getting off with the middle aged horn legend, the singer has entered Eurovision and the saxophone player starts  leaning towards a jazz career.

Coronation Street's Nigel Pivaro will be performing the role of ‘Da’ (He appeared as the lovable rogue Terry Duckworth (son of Vera and Jack) . Joining the cast as Deco is Olivier Award nominee  Ian McIntosh who previously played Alternate Deco during the original West End run. Previous credits include Galileo in the UK tour of We Will Rock You, Sid Worley in An Officer and a Gentleman and he was Olivier nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Musical’ for his role as Barry in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. His extensive musical career has also seen him perform in Hair and Can’t Buy Me Love.

They are joined by James Killeen as Jimmy, Stuart Reid as Joey, Ciara Mackey as Imelda, Michael Mahony as Oustpan, Ryan Kelly as Billy, Conor Litten as Dean, Guy Freeman as Derek, Stephen O’Riain as James, Ronnie Yorke as Mickah, Eve Kitchingman as Natalie, and Sarah Gardiner as Bernie. Maryann Lynch, Alice Croft, James Deegan, Callum Martin, Joshua Barton, Ed Thorpe and Colm Gleeson make up the ensemble.
