From wildlife viewing in the remote polar regions to magical sunsets in the Indian Ocean, these ships offer unforgettable voyages.

Even if you're sailing in chilly Antarctica, cruising on a small ship offers comfort and coziness.

If you are feeling a sense of wanderlust and ready to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations in far-flung corners of the world, consider booking a small ship cruise. These luxury mega-yachts, expedition-style vessels and sailing ships can visit tucked-away harbors, exotic locales and pristine beaches that larger ships can't reach. And if you opt for a cruise on a rigged sailing vessel, there's nothing more romantic than watching the sun set into the ocean while the wind fills the sails of a tall ship at sea.

Smaller ships offer an intimate onboard vibe where the experience is highly personalized with a higher crew to passenger ratio – and where you'll get to know many of your fellow passengers. Smaller ships are often more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly than traditional cruise ships, using either wind power or the latest technologies. With the addition of new or existing cruise lines entering this market along with other lines investing in upgrading older ships, there are many more vessels in these smaller ship classes to choose from when considering your cruise options.

If you're seeking an adventure of a lifetime – whether to meet the penguins in Antarctica, people- and yacht watch in glamorous ports of call in the Mediterranean, or go island hopping in paradise in Hawaii – then plan your voyage to set sail on one of these small ships.

Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

Inspired by the legendary 1902 Preussen, the first five-masted ship, Royal Clipper was launched in 2000 as a true sailing vessel at 439 feet in length with 54,000 square feet of sails across 42 sails. With five fully rigged masts, the ship is recognized in Guinness World Records as the largest square rigger in service today.

Modeled after the historic clipper ships, Royal Clipper travels under full sail – and by wind power – for up to 80% of its voyages. When the vessel does navigate under power, the energy-efficient engines only use high-quality, low-sulfur gas oil, earning Star Clippers the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate for all three of its clipper ships.

The ship can accommodate as many as 227 passengers in 114 staterooms, along with 106 crew. While on board, guests will enjoy 19,000 square feet of open teak deck, three swimming pools and hidden balconies on either side of the bow, where you can view wildlife like dolphins swimming alongside the ship. You can also relax in the bowsprit net overlooking the ocean and keeping an eye out for whales. For the more adventurous sailor, climbing the mast to 75 feet above the water affords unforgettable ocean views from your perch in one of the passenger crow's nests. Other features of Royal Clipper are its three-story atrium, trilevel dining room, and unique spa and health club with underwater portholes called the Captain Nemo Lounge.

The ship's seven-night Windward Islands itinerary sails round trip from Barbados with stops in Antigua , Martinique , St. Kitts, Îles Des Saintes and St. Lucia. You'll even have an opportunity to sail alongside one of the line's sister ships and another tall ship – Star Flyer – to the island of Dominica . Royal Clipper's longer itineraries include several Grand Voyages: The 19-night cruise from Cannes in France to Lisbon in Portugal, for example, calls on other ports in France, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco.

Silversea Cruises: Silver Wind

Launched in 1995, Silver Wind was Silversea's second of four vessels that the line built for the ultra-luxury market. This ship underwent a significant upgrade in 2018, followed by another refurbishment in 2021 that included an enhanced ice-class hull. This new addition allows Silver Wind to be one of the most adaptable ships in the fleet, sailing from the polar regions like Antarctica to sunny island climates in the Caribbean and cruising picturesque shorelines along the Mediterranean Sea.

Silver Wind measures about 515 feet in length and has 149 all ocean-view suites, more than 80% of which boast a private veranda. The ship carries 274 guests and 239 crew and features elegant public rooms, including lounges for gazing out at the ocean or watching onboard entertainment. There's also an upscale bar, shipboard boutiques and a spa.

Dining is a highlight, with four venues spanning international cuisine such as Italian, regional specialties and seasonally inspired menus. For an evening under the stars, The Grill features fine steaks and seafood or vegetables that guests can cook at the table on 400 degrees Celsius lava stones. After dinner, spend time chatting with fellow passengers at Connoisseur's Corner, where you can sip cognac and enjoy a cigar.

Silver Wind offers an epic 20-night expedition cruise from Tromsø, Norway, to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, visiting various destinations in Iceland as well as remote regions and glaciers in Greenland. For a warmer voyage, the 10-night Puntarenas to Guayaquil itinerary takes you from Costa Rica to Ecuador in South America, with stops at the remote Darien Jungle in Panama, the Utría National Natural Park in Colombia and several ports in Ecuador, including the city of Guayaquil.

Sea Cloud Cruises: Sea Cloud

Courtesy of Sea Cloud Cruises

Built in 1931 as a private yacht for Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, an American socialite and philanthropist, this legendary windjammer maintains the elegance of a time gone by.

Originally named Hussar, the 360-foot Sea Cloud has a fascinating history – while the ship started as a private yacht, it later became a floating palace of diplomacy and then a warship. Today, Sea Cloud accommodates up to 64 passengers in 32 outside cabins and carries about 60 crew. The ship also boasts 29 sails, with the height of the main mast towering 184 feet above the water.

If you've never been on this type of vessel, cruising under full sail on a tall ship is unlike any other experience. Sea Cloud does not rely on motors (though they are installed just in case), allowing the wind and sea to determine the ship's course whenever possible, guided by the skills and seamanship of the crew for navigation. This setup provides an opportunity to teach the art of sailing to the passengers. The captain of Sea Cloud and guests prefer to cruise under full sail, which is the lure of sailing on a windjammer. Life on board the ship is intimate and relaxed – just as you would find on a private yacht.

Amenities on Sea Cloud include a lido bar and deck and a restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the destination, which features local products, fresh fish and regional wines.

One of Sea Cloud's top itineraries, Between Lifestyles and Nature's Paradises, sails for seven nights from Monte Carlo, Monaco , to the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca , with calls on less visited ports along the Mediterranean coast in southern France like La Ciotat and Collioure. You can also join the jet-setters in St. Barts with a front-row seat from your sailing ship for the Bucket Regatta. This 10-night adventure includes two days in the French West Indies island of St. Barts and other picturesque ports of call in the Caribbean.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' first luxury expedition ship, World Navigator, launched in August 2021. With a length of 423 feet and capacity for 196 passengers and 127 crew, the ship sails to fascinating destinations around the world. The quiet alternate hydro-jet propulsion system allows for up-close viewing of marine animals and other wildlife.

The 98 beautifully appointed staterooms and suites feature upscale amenities like Egyptian linens and a menu to personalize your selection of a pillow. Some accommodations also have Juliet-style or walk-out balconies, and certain suites come with butler service. For dining options, you'll find Portuguese-inspired Porto, which is the main dining room, or the New York-style 7-Aft Grill for steaks and seafood. Passengers can also opt to have lunch poolside or enjoy light bites at the Dome Observation Lounge, which offers panoramic views of the sea.

Other ship amenities include three bars and lounges, the SeaSpa by L'Occitane, an auditorium, a mud room, a pool and two hot tubs, a boutique and a fitness center. To wind down after a day of exploring destinations in far corners of the globe, convene with other passengers to relive the experience during Àpres Sea.

For the ultimate bucket list adventure, book the nine-night round-trip expedition from Ushuaia, Argentina, to the southernmost continent. Windstar Cruises: Wind Star

When it first launched in Le Havre, France, in November 1985, Wind Star was the world's largest sailing vessel and the flagship for the line. While this schooner may not be the largest tall ship on the seas today, Wind Star is an elegant four-masted sailing yacht and the cruise line's namesake. Since its launch, this ship has been through a few renovations, with the most recent one in 2018. The 360-foot vessel features 73 deluxe ocean-view staterooms that accommodate 148 passengers, and it can carry 101 crew. Four masts stand at 204 feet tall, and six triangular Dacron sails, which are self-furling and computerized, make up a surface area of 21,500 square feet.

As with other Windstar vessels, you'll find the same casual elegance on board this sailing ship. Guests will get to sail away to the music Windstar traditionally plays while raising the flag during every port departure – Vangelis' song "1492: Conquest of Paradise," which is the musical score to the movie of the same name. The culinary program on Windstar's fleet is in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, so dining is a real treat. The three restaurant venues on Wind Star include Amphora, whose contemporary, international menu was created by James Beard-affiliated chefs. The romantic Candles offers an alfresco dining experience with grilled steaks and skewers, while the Veranda is the ship's casual breakfast and lunch buffet with outdoor seating.

Other onboard amenities include a lounge, the Yacht Club Café, a pool bar, a salon and spa, a boutique, a library, a fitness center, a water sports platform and an open bridge where you can enjoy a chat over coffee with the captain.

Treasures of the Greek Isles is a seven-night voyage that sails round trip from Athens to several Greek islands, including Mykonos and Santorini . This itinerary also includes a stop in Kusadasi, Turkey, where you'll be able to visit the fascinating ancient city of Ephesus. For a South America adventure to transit the Panama Canal and explore destinations in the region like rainforests, reserve the seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal voyage.

Small ship cruise deals offer expedition-style travel in some of the most pristine regions of the world. Most of these deals are all-inclusive packages that include pre- and post-cruise hotels, all transfers (including domestic flights), and often even both international flights to and from the destination country.

Small ship cruise travel is the best (often the only) way to explore more exotic vacation destinations. You won't find much in the way of theater productions or casinos, but that leaves room for educational pursuits. Small ships commonly organize enrichment seminars on everything - from local culture to photography. Sometimes local performers (historians, dancers, and musicians) are welcome on board to entertain.

Small Cruise Lines - CruiseMapper

Small ships go into the smaller ports - often inaccessible for big-sized vessels . This allows "expedition travelers" to experience the local people, culture and traditions of the destinations, and not only the tourist areas. This "intimate travel" experience includes viewing the wildlife up close, getting to know the crew and forming a bond with fellow passengers. Small ships, by definition, are with a way smaller passenger capacity , so you'll likely meet the same people over and over on a daily basis.

Still, the biggest advantage of small-ship vacations is flexibility. Booking availability is usually great, so picking your departure date is easier. Not to forget the choice of unique itineraries on which are navigated the world's most pristine destinations, including narrow fjords, remote islands, even inland waterways.

Small-ship cruising experiences don't include traditional for large liners amenities - like multiple dining venues, grand-style shows, kids programming. However, enjoying a personalized vacation while cruising the world on a "boat" is usually not recommended for first-timers and in the same time is best for affluent and more active travelers - as the money must not be an issue.

Small cruise lines

This is a list of the world's most popular small-ship cruise companies. Again, there should be also added river shipping companies, the largest among which are Viking , Uniworld , Avalon Waterways , AmaWaterways , CroisiEurope , Emerald Waterways , Scylla , Luftner-Amadeus .

Alaskan Dream Cruises ( fleet , AlaskanDreamCruises.com) is Allen family-owned company (founded 1970) operating Inside Passage itineraries - wilderness adventures on small-sized expedition ships. Its ships also visit exclusive ports of call in Alaska, including native-owned lands and a private island. Cruise prices are around USD 600 pp per night.

Aurora Expeditions ( fleet , AuroraExpeditions.com.au) is among the pioneers of polar expedition cruising, as well as a leading adventure travel company on the Australian market. The company was established in 1991 by Greg Mortimer (one of the first Australians to climb Mt Everest without oxygen) and his wife Margaret Mortimer. The company initially specialized in small-group cruises to Antarctica. In 2008 it was sold and the new owners started expedition voyages in Norway's Svalbard Islands , Russia's Far East, Greenland, PNG-Papua New Guinea, and South America (on Amazon River). In 2014 were inaugurated Alaskan Inside Passage itineraries and also launched land-river-sea expeditions in Ecuador (northwestern South America). In 2015 was launched an African cruisetour with a luxury safari cruise on Chobe River (Botswana). For polar operations, Aurora Expeditions charters ice-strengthened Russian research ships.

Coral Expeditions ( fleet , CoralExpeditions.com) is among the best for South Pacific Islands cruises. Each vessel has a high-speed tender boat and Zodiacs for landings.

International Expeditions (TUI-owned) and Metropolitan Touring are among the best choices for Galapagos Islands. Metropolitan Touring's Galapagos ships are larger compared to most of the yachts deployed in this region.

"Island Windjammers" owns sailing ships on Caribbean island itineraries year-round.

Variety Cruises ( fleet ) owns superyachts (motorized and sailing) and operates in the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa, Indian Ocean, Central America.

Katarina Line (Croatia-based) also operates as an international travel booking agency for other lines. Katarina owns around 40 small-sized ships and yachts in the region of Adriatic Sea (Dalmatian Coast). Each of the ships can be fully chartered.

"Peregrine Adventures" is among the best lines in Antarctica. The itineraries are with regular roundtrip departures from Argentina (Ushuaia) and Chile (Punta Arenas), with a duration between 8 and 20 days. Among the visited destinations are Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula, Drake Passage, Falkland Islands, South Sandwich Islands. Deals are inclusive of hotels and all transfers. Fly cruise deals include departures from Buenos Aires. International flights are not included in the fares.

Noble Caledonia ( fleet , UK-based) operates chartered riverboats and owns two ships.

Quasar Expeditions (QuasarEx.com) is another major player on the luxury Galapagos cruising market. The company provides professional naturalists, and most of the tours (kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, walking, hiking) are included in the fares.

"Aggressor Fleet" owns an impressive number of smaller luxury yachts and operates in the Caribbean, Hawaii, Galapagos, Southeast Asia, Red Sea, Maldives, also in the South Pacific Ocean.

G Adventures (Gadventures.com) is a Galapagos cruise line brand. In July 2017, it acquired the UK-based company Swan Hellenic. G-Adventures restarted Swan Hellenic's operations in 2018. The company owns the MS Expedition (ice-strengthened vessel).

"Pearl Seas Cruises" operates in USA (Great Lakes), Canada (Canadian Maritimes) and also in the Caribbean. On January 23, 2017, started the first cruise to Cuba from Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale Florida). The 10-day itinerary visited Havana plus other Cuban ports. In 2017, the 210-passenger ship Pearl Mist had 11 voyages from Fort Lauderdale to Cuba (January through April), plus more scheduled for winter season 2017-2018.

The following companies have their individual pages at CruiseMapper. Each of them provides top-quality, small ship cruising experiences on comparably larger vessels.

Our Readers' Favorite Small-ship Ocean Cruise Lines in 2022

The best cruise lines for small ships, according to Travel + Leisure readers, are the ones that develop a sense of camaraderie onboard.

small ship cruises us

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite small-ship ocean cruise lines.

Cruise lovers couldn't wait to get back out on the sea, and Travel + Leisure readers who prefer compact vessels have been delighted to find that the voyages have only gotten better. This year, T+L adjusted the World's Best Awards cruise categories to reflect the industry and traveler experience. The ships in the small-ship ocean cruise lines category are now those with 150 to 299 cabins, while smaller ships (with fewer than 150 cabins) are in an all-new intimate-ship category.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

In the No. 2 spot is Windstar Cruises. The line's 148- to 342-passenger sailing ships and 312-passenger, all-suite motor yachts received praise from voters. "It was great to be on such a small ship with a high ratio of staff to guests," said a reader who sailed on the 312-passenger Star Legend .

Ultra-luxury line Seabourn is recognized in this category for its 225-suite Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Quest, and Seabourn Sojourn . Said one reader who sailed on the Odyssey : "This was my first Seabourn cruise and I really loved it — the size of the suites, the attentive service, the wonderful food, and the surprisingly terrific variety of entertainment."

But it was Paul Gauguin Cruises, now owned by French cruise company Ponant, that emerged as the reader favorite among the best cruise lines for small ships. Below, find out what sets it apart.

1. Paul Gauguin Cruises

On the Paul Gauguin, a sense of place permeates everything from the Polynesian-influenced décor and color palette to the local cuisine travelers sample onboard. Resident performers, known as Les Gauguines, share Polynesian culture through dance, music, and storytelling. In the spa, guests can indulge in a massage based on Tahitian techniques. Passengers explore island history and enjoy watersports such as snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding, including from the beaches of two private motu. "Everything about this cruise was excellent," said one T+L reader. "Ship staff was exceptional and always made you feel at home."

RIVER AND SMALL SHIP CRUISES IN THE UNITED STATES Cruising "Close to Home" has never been better.

"Close to Home" river and small ship cruising in North America, includes Alaska, the Caribbean and Central America. U.S. river and small ship cruises are quickly emerging as one of the most in-demand cruise vacations in the world. If you're a bit tired of the big ocean cruises, and eager to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere without the need for long overseas air flights, then "Close to Home" cruising may be the perfect vacation for you to explore. Not only will you be with like-minded, similar-aged travelers, you'll also be in a very relaxed and casual atmosphere visiting interesting and historical places from Alaska's breathtaking Inside Passage to the crystaline aqua blue waters of Belize in the Caribbean River and small ship cruising on the U.S. East Coast. Small ship cruising enables you to explore the quaint islands and villages of New England including 7-night cruises that travel only the coast of Maine. Enjoy a Grand New England cruise that traverses the coast from beautiful Providence, Rhode Island all the way to the home of LL Bean in Portland Maine. Along the way you'll stop in Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Boothbay Harbor and picturesque Camden, Maine as well. (BTW — Can you spell Lobster dinner for less than $15?!) Also along the eastcoast is one of the lesser known trips, but one of our personal favorites, a Hudson River cruise which sails roundtrip from New York. Start your trip off with a few days in the Big Apple, then cruise through the beautiful Hudson Valley into the Catskills, Troy, Poughkeepsie, and one of the most interesting and inspiring places you'll ever visit, West Point and its world renowned military academy. A U.S. river or small ship cruise can also take you along the Inland Waterway from Rhode Island all the way down the coast to Jacksonville, Florida. Or take one of the more unusual trips you'll ever see: Chicago through the Great Lakes to the Erie Canal and finally into Warren, Rhode Island. Yes! On a ship, not a bus... wow!

small ship cruises us

More "Close to Home" river and small ship destinations. We've given you a brief overview of some of the itineraries you can enjoy cruising on the East Coast of the United States (and into Canada). Other destinations include river cruises on the well-known Mississippi, Tennesse and Ohio rivers exploring the heartland of America. Then there are the incredible cruises to be taken on the gorgeous Columbia and Snake rivers through Oregon and Washington. Of course, no "Close to Home" cruise list would be complete without itineraries offering small ship cruises to Alaska's Inside Passage and Southeast Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest's Puget Sound and San Juan Islands. Lesser known, but tremendously enjoyable, are the small ship cruises in the Caribbean which include the island of Belize off the Yucatan Peninsula, the islands off the shores of Honduras and Guatemala in Central America, and even the U.S. Virgin Islands. I guess what we are trying to say in a few words is that the realm of close-to-home cruising is more than just the mighty Mississippi and Columbia Rivers. It is a plethora of interesting, historic and scenic destinations waiting for you to experience them up close and personal aboard one of the many enjoyable river ships or small boats operated by several premium, American-owned and operated cruise lines. Learn about one of North America's premier river cruise lines: Visit our  American Cruise Lines  page to read our review of this wonderful cruise line!

small ship cruises us

Cruises are amazing, but sometimes mega cruise ships can leave you feeling like cattle being herded through long lines at the buffet and at port debarkation. Smaller ship cruising is where it’s at — if you can afford it, that is. More intimate ships not only translate to fewer fellow passengers, but it also means you can visit lesser-known ports. Plus, you’re less likely to get lost on the way back to your room.

As part of our Best of Travel Awards, TravelAwaits readers nominated and voted on their favorite small ship cruise lines. Here are the results!

Viking Expedition Ship in Antarctica

1. Viking Cruises (Winner)

Viking Cruises is quite popular with our readers. Not only did the line top this category, but it also took home the gold for best Mediterranean cruise line . There’s plenty to love about this small ship cruise line. Viking does not allow kids under 18, does not have casinos or umbrella drinks, does not allow smoking on board, and doesn’t have formal nights to get gussied up for.

What Viking does offer is an  onshore excursion  in every port,  regional cuisine , and Wi-Fi. Luxe accommodations feature king-size beds, large showers, heated bathroom floors, private verandas, 24-hour room service, and more.

Touted as the “thinking person’s cruise line,” Viking also offers  culturally enriching  programs such as guest lecturers, resident historians, regional performance arts such as traditional Greek dancing, an onboard cooking school, and more.

“The team at Viking Cruises will make your stay so wonderful you won’t want to go home. Guests are often so pleased with their trips that they use their onboard discount to book a future Viking Cruise before they depart,” says  TravelAwaits  writer Judy Freeman. Read more about why she loves this cruise line in her article,  How To Make The Most Of Your Viking Cruise Vacation . And if you decide to book a Viking cruise, here are  five important things to do to prepare for it .

Windstar sailboat in St. Lucia

2. Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises is pretty pricey, but veteran cruiser Melody Pittman says it is worth it . Windstar small cruise ships host anywhere from 148 to 342 guests, allowing them to reach ports you may not see on other itineraries, including Tahiti, Kobe, Bordeaux, and  Honfleur .

Plus, Windstar is the official cruise line of the  James Beard Foundation , so you know you’re in for a culinary treat. Many of the high-end foods are locally sourced and specialty restaurants are included in your cruise fare. Read about Pittman’s favorite dishes from her voyage on the Star Legend . There’s also 24-hour room service and unlimited ice cream!

From scuba diving to visiting private islands, a wide range of shore excursions are available. Windstar also offers custom tours which can range from a solo trip to a carefully curated excursion for your group to see the sights with your own English-speaking guide. There are also culinary shore excursions!

Celebrity Constellation in the Bay of Kotor

3. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises’ 12 main vessels carry about 2,000-3,000 passengers each, but they are still much smaller than, say, a Royal Caribbean cruise liner. Generally, the bigger the Celebrity ship, the newer it is and the more amenities it will have. Its older Millennium Class ships are more intimate.

A few tiny ships, which carry 16 to 100 passengers apiece, are based in the Galápagos, including the Celebrity Flora . This luxury mega-yacht features all-suite accommodations, two chef-inspired restaurants, and an optional glamping experience where you can sleep under the stars.

tiny Silversea Cruise Ship in the Indian Ocean

4. Silversea Cruises

Known for award-winning entertainment, butler service, and 24-hour gourmet dining, Silversea Cruises goes above and beyond all-inclusive and chauffeurs guests from their house to the airport and back. Airfare and pre-and post-cruise hotel nights are included, too!

In addition to iconic destinations, Silversea goes to off-the-beaten-track ports that only small ships can reach. Enjoy a complimentary shore excursion every day or customize your own. Silversea also offers expeditions to remote regions like Antarctica.

Enjoy butler service in every suite and a staff-to-guest ratio of nearly one to one. Champagne, wine, beer, and premium spirits are on the house, and tips are included, too!

pool area on Seaborn Cruise Line ship

5. Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn Cruise Line’s young, modern fleet boasts of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the industry. Intimate ships mean Seabourn can visit everything from marquee ports to hidden harbors where larger ships cannot go. Plus, with nearly one staff member per guest, the crew is able to remember guests’ names. All of the luxuriously appointed suites are oceanfront and come with a Personal Suite Host and Suite Attendant who can do anything from drawing you a bubble bath to assisting in arranging an in-suite cocktail party. Tipping is not required or expected and premium wine, champagne, and spirits, are included.

Escape the Masses on These New Small-Ship Expedition, Luxury, and Sailing Cruises

Authentic. It was Merriam Webster’s top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises—particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer—indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn’t a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

Sea Cloud Cruises' sailing ship, the "Sea Cloud Spirit" with three tall masts and white sails

On Sea Cloud Spirit , passengers benefit from both age-old seafaring techniques and modern comforts.

Sea Cloud Cruises’ ” Sea Cloud Spirit”

  • Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain’s Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What’s more authentic—and sustainable—than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises’ unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world’s largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There’s a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Luxury expedition cruising comes with priceless views when sailing with Atlas Ocean Voyages.

Atlas Ocean Voyages’ ” World Voyager”

  • Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Voyager , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company’s 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship—including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows—is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There’s even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas’s expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Voyager , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Joining its sister ship Evrima (pictured), the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Ilma is launching in 2024.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s “ Ilma”

  • Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe’s oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner’s suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

For many travelers, cruises likely bring to mind Caribbean island hopping or journeys along European waterways .

But for those who would rather stick close to home, there are plenty of options for visiting new destinations by ship without ever leaving the U.S. Domestic river cruises give travelers an opportunity to explore America without the hassle of long-haul flights.

“You cover multiple states on almost every cruise … so it's a really nice way to see different parts of the country,” said Donavan Martin, vice president of the travel agency USA River Cruises, Inc.

Offering a convenient way to explore the rich landscapes and cultural heritage of America, these cruises eliminate the complexities of international travel. For passengers accustomed to a more conventional type of sailing, they can reshape perceptions of cruising and openi ng up a world of exploration along America's iconic rivers.

Where can I take a US river cruise?

Travelers can choose from a range of itineraries from coast to coast. This year’s most popular sailings have been on the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest – which are often combined with the Snake River – according to Martin.

The Mississippi River is another major destination. Viking even purpose-built its first river ship based in North America, Viking Mississippi , for the waterway.

“On the Viking Mississippi, our onboard dining features daily-changing menus highlighting delicious regional cuisine and always available classics prepared with fresh, local ingredients,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email. “Our cultural enrichment on board includes iconic music of the region, such as New Orleans Jazz and the Wisconsin Polka, while our guest lecturers shed light on the region’s art, architecture, history, culture and more."

However, passengers should note that the river can be tricky to navigate. Water level fluctuations, which have been exacerbated by climate change , can impact cruise lines’ operations.

“Almost every year, there's at least a couple of weeks there that could have some alterations to itineraries for water levels,” said Martin. He added that cruise lines do a “really good job” of trying to visit as many planned ports as possible.

Travelers have options in regions they may not even realize.

American Cruise Lines, which offers a wide range of itineraries across the country, began round-trip sailings from Washington, D.C. , in March. In Florida, a major departure point for ocean-going cruise ships, its Great Rivers of Florida itinerary allows guests to sail in and around the state rather than just from it.

American operates a U.S.-flagged fleet of modern riverboats, paddle wheelers and coastal ships and has grown rapidly, nearly tripling its vessels in just the last five years. The line, which currently has 19 ships, will add five more by 2026.

The expansion has been driven in large part by demand from loyal guests, according to spokesperson Alexa Paolella. “The advantages in exploring the U.S. are endless,” she said in an email. “We all have a tendency to overlook or take for granted what we have available in our own backyards.”

New England cruises visiting states like Rhode Island and Massachusetts are reliable traffic drivers as well, according to Martin.

“Those ones and the Hudson River are always sold out,” he said.

Most of the U.S. river cruise destinations are seasonal, he added. Prime time for the Columbia River is between April and October, for instance, and travelers may find fewer ships on the Lower Mississippi in late summer during hurricane season .

How expensive are US river cruises?

Prices vary by destination, sailing date and other factors.

Starting prices for eight-day Mississippi Delta Explorer cruises with Viking between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Memphis, Tennessee, in 2025, for example, currently range from $3,499 to $5,999 per person.

Martin noted that U.S. river cruises tend to be more inclusive than traditional ocean sailings. Many bundle meals and drinks – including alcohol and specialty coffee – and along with shore excursions and Wi-Fi, which can add up when priced out a la carte.

Are US river cruises family-friendly?

That depends. River cruises have also historically been popular with an older clientele. Viking, for instance, is adults-only.

Even when children are welcome, river cruise vessels tend to be small, without the kinds of kid-friendly attractions found on large ocean ships (think rock climbing walls and roller coasters ). Martin said ships on most of the lines his agency works with can accommodate 200 guests or less.

That said, Martin has booked families on American Cruise Lines who enjoyed themselves. Adventure-focused Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic also attracts an active crowd, according to Martin.

Floating resorts vs yacht-like vessels: How to pick between big and small cruise ships

Do I need a passport for a US river cruise?

U.S. travelers generally don’t need to bring one on domestic river cruises, but they should have another form of ID like a driver’s license. “For some reason, maybe someone doesn’t have a passport, so these cruises are perfect for that,” said Martin.

Big vs. small cruise ships: Which will I like better?

Fran Golden

The size of a cruise ship can make or break your vacation. Big and small ships have major differences in atmosphere, activities and entertainment. One person's dream cruise might even be another person's nightmare.

When choosing a ship, it's important to think about what you and your traveling companions want to do on your cruise vacation. This guide will help you weigh the decision on which type of ship might be best for you. For additional help in your decision-making journey, read some of our other guides, like how to pick the best cruise line .

If you are a small-town person or big-city resident looking for a big-city experience — think New York and Las Vegas or even Walt Disney World for entertainment, food, nightlife and excitement — book a big ship. You want action, and crowds and their noise are not a problem. Big ships visit bustling ports on well-traveled routes — such as the Caribbean from Miami — and the ships put equal (or even greater) emphasis on what's happening on board the ship itself, with activities for your whole family, including the kids.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

On the other hand, small ships tend to cater mostly to adults who want to travel in more intimate — or luxurious — surroundings. They may or may not offer evening entertainment or any casino action. Often, they focus on close-up experiences in some of the world's most out-of-the-way places, filling off-tour hours with lectures.

Of course, some cruise ships fit somewhere in between these extremes. Here are some fine points of big versus small cruise ships to help you with your choice of ship.

Big ships, big action

The newest floating titans deliver amusement park attractions — such as the roller coasters on Carnival Cruise Line 's newest ships, Royal Caribbean 's thrill slides and the go-kart racetracks on the top of the latest Norwegian Cruise Line vessels. Multiple waterslides are part of the fun, too. Activities abound, such as contests, participatory game shows and sports tournaments. Virtual reality experiences, escape rooms and laser tag games are new additions to the family fun roster.

While some of the largest ships in the world may carry more than 6,500 passengers, other big ships carry a few thousand passengers on board, pairing some big ship attributes with a less frenetic pace.

RELATED: The best water slides and watery fun zones at sea

On all big ships, entertainment is a focus, with multiple shows in the theaters, sometimes even full productions of Broadway musicals such as "Cats" and "Beetlejuice." Live music takes place in many venues, so passengers may choose to listen to classic rock, jazz, Caribbean tunes or a classical quartet. Comedians perform, the casino is active and you'll find a big late-night party at the disco — or sometimes even on deck. You may have a choice of a dozen bars and lounges.

small ship cruises us

The noise level may be high, especially when lots of kids are on board, and you will definitely feel like part of a crowd at times. However, that does not mean grown-ups can't sneak away to more sedate areas, such as the adults-only pool and sun deck, the expansive spa and fitness center, or a specialty restaurant for a romantic dinner. While the grown-ups play, the kids will be well-occupied and looked after in a camp-like kids' program, with separate activities for teens and hard-to-please tweens.

Big ships provide a vast choice of accommodations, including inside cabins for the budget-conscious, cabins with private balconies and lavish suites, some with outdoor hot tubs. Some of the largest ships have exclusive suite complexes complete with a private restaurant and pool.

Dining options rival what you'll find in a small city — dining rooms serving leisurely multi-course meals, food courts, buffets, hamburger grills, pizza and taco stands, and specialty restaurants serving sushi, French, Italian or fine steaks.

While doing nothing but staring at the ocean is an option on big ships — and you can choose to stay to yourself and order room service in your cabin — that is not really what they are about. It's much more fun to dress up for a night on the town and socialize with other guests on board.

Small ship intimacy and Mother Nature

Small ships, which we are defining as vessels carrying fewer than 400 passengers, are more about where you are going — and cultural and nature pursuits — than constant action.

On the smallest and oldest small ships, cabins may be basic — even with fixed twin beds — and balconies may be a rarity. On the other hand, if you sail on luxury line Silversea 's 100-passenger Silver Origin in the Galapagos or on Seabourn 's 264-passenger Seabourn Venture , you'll stay in an elegant suite, perhaps even with butler service.

Don't expect many onboard places to go — your choices might include a few dining venues and lounges, a spa and a small fitness center (though you might also find a small casino). The top deck might have a pool — or not. The ship will likely have a hot tub.

small ship cruises us

While some of the larger small ships have musicians, including a piano player and a song-and-dance team, if you're on a ship with only a few dozen fellow passengers, don't expect too much entertainment. A crew member might take out a guitar for a singalong, or local performers hired by the cruise company may come on board at a port of call and get everyone dancing around the deck.

Ship size affects where you go. Small ships, thanks to their shallow drafts, can bring you right into yacht harbors.

Another advantage is that many small ships have an aft-end marina stocked with water toys, so you can borrow a kayak, paddleboard or even a sailboat to spend time on the water. Diving right off the ship into the sea is considered a rite of passage — especially if the water is frigid, in which case your fellow passengers will likely applaud your efforts.

small ship cruises us

Within this category, purpose-built expedition ships get you up close to glaciers, waterfalls, whales, blue-footed boobies and other sights. On board, naturalists, scientists, glaciologists, historians and other experts deliver lectures. They also lead explorations via inflatable Zodiac boats and kayaks. On the latest expedition ships, toys for exploring remote destinations might also include private helicopters and submarines.

Dining options vary by brand. On Windstar Cruises ' upscale small sailing and motor yachts, for instance, you have a choice of dining rooms and specialty restaurants (with dishes created by celebrity chefs). On small Lindblad Expeditions and UnCruise Adventures ships, dining is a communal event for everyone on board at one seating. On the luxury line SeaDream Yacht Club , you may arrange a private dinner party on the deck.

RELATED: The best luxury cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

With only a few hundred or a few dozen people on board, you will get to know your fellow travelers — and "hiding" in the crowd is difficult. On the other hand, it's easy to make friends .

Your companions at sea may be experienced cruisers or newbies attracted to the ship by the destination — whether remote tropical islands, polar regions or bucket list places in between. Some of these ships rarely do the same route twice.

Between big and small ships

If you can't decide between a big ship and a small ship, look for ships in the middle that carry 450 to 1,800 guests. These include many of the vessels operated by the main luxury cruise lines — Seabourn, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — and upscale lines such as Viking , Oceania and Azamara. The smaller Holland America Line ships also fall into this category.

small ship cruises us

These ships wholly or mostly cater to an adult crowd — people who don't need waterslides but want choices in entertainment, accommodations and activities along with fascinating places to visit.

On these ships, you'll still find impressive guest lecturers and such adult spaces as a thermal spa suite with soothing water treatments. Guests might be content to entertain themselves with a good book, though they may also enjoy a cooking class or wine-tasting event. Trivia is a competitive sport.

You'll find a great selection of lounges and dining options, live music and entertaining diversions like the super fun ABBA show on Viking. You'll also find wonderful and often luxurious pools, hot tubs and other spots where you can spend your time outdoors feeling one with the sea.

These ships visit both the expected and more unusual ports, including places larger ships can't visit because of their size. Itineraries may, for instance, take you deep into the southern Caribbean and the South Pacific, to Iceland or through the Greek Isles.

10 Best Hawaiian Island Cruises, From Adventurous Expeditions to Luxury Ships

T he thing about Hawaii cruises is that there’s no bad time of year to take one. Thanks to its year-round sunshine and warm weather, Hawaii will be there for you whenever you’re ready to set sail.

Several major cruise lines, including Holland America, Princess Cruises, and Viking Cruises, call on ports in Hawaii, with many of them traveling to or from the United States or Canada. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only company that sails exclusively between Oahu and neighboring Hawaiian islands. The  Pride of America , a United States-themed ship, makes stops in Maui , Kauai, and the Big Island before returning to Honolulu , a perfect home base for visiting Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor.

Sailing between the Hawaiian Islands is generally relatively calm, though there are occasional reports of rough patches on cruises that cross the Pacific Ocean. And while every month is a good month to cruise to Hawaii, peak whale-watching season in the region is between January and March. It can be rainy, so you’ll want to pack a rain jacket . But a little rain might just be worth it to avoid summer crowds in one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

Cruises are an ideal way to explore Hawaii, and there are plenty of options that fit a broad range of travel styles and tastes.

Best Hawaiian cruise for island hopping

Norwegian Pride of America

Most Hawaii cruises require several days at sea, but not Norwegian’s Pride of America . The 2,186-passenger Pride of America is the only cruise ship that sails from Oahu to other Hawaiian islands, minimizing sea days to whisk travelers to four Hawaiian islands in a week. The ship departs from Honolulu every Saturday all year long, making it easy to tack on visits to Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and Waikiki Beach. It overnights in Maui and Kauai and makes two stops on the Big Island—in Hilo and Kona. Onboard the Pride of America , you’ll find a classic American diner, a Brazilian churrascaria, a steakhouse, sushi bar, and teppanyaki in addition to pools, an arcade, shops, and a spa. There are several bars, including a Napa-themed wine bar, a Mardi Gras style nightclub, and old-style Gold Rush Saloon.

Seven Seas Mariner

Regent Seven Seas isn’t just one of the most luxurious ships sailing in Hawaii, it also offers one of the most interesting itineraries. Sail from Miami to Honolulu on the Seven Seas Mariner by first crossing the iconic Panama Canal before sailing the western coast of Mexico and Central America toward Hawaii. The ship makes three Hawaiian stops on this 21-night itinerary, including an overnight stop in Honolulu. Level up your cruise experience by booking a penthouse suite, which includes access to a personal butler. All cruise fares include shore excursions, onboard dining, all beverages, and unlimited Wi-Fi. The cruise line prides itself on creating memorable dining experiences and it’s not uncommon for guests to become accustomed to its succulent lobster dishes, filet mignon, and poolside burgers. This itinerary does include several sea days, but between the ship’s plush suites and the variety of things to do on board, you may not notice. Even the lowest-priced suites offer floor-to-ceiling windows and verandas made for breakfast on the balcony.

Seabourn Sojourn

If you’ve got a few weeks to spare, the Seabourn Sojourn has an itinerary that’s well worth the time. Seabourn’s 20-day Allure of Aloha itinerary starts and ends in Los Angeles, calling on several Hawaiian ports and making a stop in Mexico along the way. Spend a few days at sea getting to know the ship before an overnight stop in Honolulu and stops in Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. Spend a few more days at sea unwinding from your Hawaiian adventure and make one more stop in Ensenada, Mexico before returning to Los Angeles. Seabourn is one of the most luxurious cruise lines at sea, and the Sojourn doesn’t disappoint. The ship carries just over 450 passengers, making it one of the smaller vessels sailing in Hawaii. Instead of a grand lobby with a glistening chandelier, you’ll be welcomed into a space that feels more like a comfortable upscale living room. And sailings are all-inclusive, so there’s no need to think about beverage and meal packages. Even Starlink Wi-Fi, premium spirits, caviar, room service, and a stocked mini-bar are included.

The Disney Wonder got a revamp in 2019 and now has five youth clubs and seven adults-only spaces, as well as two theaters and tons of onboard activities to do between shows. Lounge by the pool. Play trivia. Dress up for high tea with your favorite Disney princes and princesses. Staterooms are designed for families with the largest suites accommodating up to seven people. There’s a nursery on board for children between six months and three years old (cribs and diaper genies can be reserved online and waiting in your stateroom when you arrive).

Best small-ship Hawaiian cruises

Safari Explorer

Sailing the 36-passenger Safari Explorer through the Hawaiian islands feels more like meandering the Pacific Ocean on a yacht than taking a cruise to one of the most popular destinations in the world. This UnCruise voyage swaps more developed Hawaiian ports for harder-to-reach locations like Molokai and Lanai. This cruise visits four islands in a week and is designed for active adventurers looking to hike volcanoes, snorkel with Manta Rays at night, and let nature take center stage of their vacation.

Viking Star

For a ship with more options, more space, and a small-ship vibe, hop on the Viking Star for a 17-day voyage that includes 10 sea days and stops in Hilo, where you can see Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s largest volcano, and in Kauai, where you can take in the breathtaking sight of Waimea Canyon, known as “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” That may seem like a lot of sea days, but it’s barely enough time to fully enjoy the Viking Star ’s Nordic Spa, cozy reading nooks, and creative menus. This cruise begins and ends in Los Angeles and can accommodate a maximum of 930 passengers. This is no party ship, but there is a bar on board and an Italian restaurant so good you’d think you’re sailing the Amalfi Coast. And, every suite on board the Viking Star comes with a balcony and a stocked mini-bar.

Best Hawaiian cruise for solo travelers

Norwegian Sun

Cruising solo can be complicated and expensive, but not on the Norwegian Sun in Hawaii. This ship got a full revamp in 2018 and has a collection of staterooms designed for solo cruising. These staterooms have queen-sized beds and are similar to other interior staterooms, but they’re priced for one. So go ahead and spend your days walking idyllic beaches, exploring volcanic landscapes, and getting lost in the swaying of palm trees before returning to your private retreat onboard the ship. The Norwegian Sun sails several two-week itineraries that incorporate Hawaii. Several itineraries combine Hawaiian and Alaskan stops while others head to islands in the South Pacific. It accommodates just under 2,000 passengers, making it one of the more manageable ships in Norwegian’s fleet.

Another Icon-of-the-Seas-Style Megaship? Make That 3 More.

Royal Caribbean and other companies are aggressively building over-the-top ships. “Today’s cruisezillas make the Titanic look like a small fishing boat,” noted one sustainability specialist.

A huge cruise ship is docked in a calm bay. The name of the ship, "Icon of the Seas," appears on the side of the multi-deck ship, which has colorful water slides and other amenities atop it.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

The Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, drew as much criticism as excitement when Royal Caribbean launched it earlier this year, but the ship has been a hit among cruise goers. Now the cruise line is adding to its fleet of megaships.

The company already has two Icon Class ships on order — Star of the Seas, which will be launched in 2025, and a third ship that has not yet been named but will be delivered in 2026. It now has plans to order a fourth ship, set for a 2027 launch, with options for a fifth and sixth. The new ships build on the market response to Icon of the Seas, said Jason Liberty, president and chief executive of Royal Caribbean Group, announcing the agreement to build the new ships.

“Since its debut, Icon has exceeded our expectations in both guest satisfaction and financial performance,” Mr. Liberty said in a statement on Tuesday.

The 250,800-ton ship, which can carry nearly 8,000 people, has eight “neighborhoods” packed with amenities that include a 55-foot waterfall, six water slides and more than 40 restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

Royal Caribbean’s announcement comes as the cruise industry reports record demand, attracting new customers with attractively priced packages that often include food, beverages and activities. In 2023, cruise travel exceeded 2019’s 29.7 million passengers by some two million, with 31.7 million passengers. This year, that number is expected to reach 34.7 million, according to Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s trade group.

Responding to the demand, Royal Caribbean launched four new ships this year and has seven more on order. Other major cruise lines, like Carnival, Norwegian and MSC, are also launching next-generation vessels through 2027. The trend has drawn criticism from environmental groups, who warn that the number and scale of the ships undermine the industry’s commitment to a more sustainable future.

The world’s largest cruise ships are now twice as big as they were in 2000, according to a report by Transport and Environment , a Brussels-based advocacy group for clean transport and energy. If vessels continue to grow at their current rate, the biggest ships in 2025 will be eight times larger than the Titanic, with a capacity to carry nearly 11,000 passengers, the report found.

“Today’s cruisezillas make the Titanic look like a small fishing boat. How much bigger can these giants get?” said Inesa Ulichina, the sustainable shipping officer at Transport and Environment. “The cruise business is the fastest growing tourism sector and its emissions are quickly getting out of control.”

Based on the current fleets of its member lines, CLIA said, there is a strong balance of cruise ship sizes. Many cruise lines argue that their larger vessels are being built more efficiently in line with their sustainability goals, with features to make them compatible with cleaner fuel sources like methanol.

The Icon of the Seas has several features designed to minimize the ship’s carbon footprint, including a waste management system that converts onboard waste into energy and an advanced purification system that is designed to treat all wastewater onboard.

“Achieving net zero is not something any one company can do alone,” Mr. Liberty said, speaking last month at a Decarbonization Summit hosted by Royal Caribbean Group and the not-for-profit Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. “It requires collective problem solving, creative thinking, and a willingness to have tough conversations.”
