Key Takeaways

  • Spurs began the off-season in the UK before travelling to Asia to face the best teams from the continent.
  • Ange Postecoglou's side came up against the likes of Vissel Kobe and a K-League XI.
  • Spurs ended pre-season with back-to-back friendlies against Bayern Munich, losing twice.

As the sun shone on Bramall Lane during the final day of a long and eventful season, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed that they would be playing in the Europa League for the 2024/25 campaign. After losing Harry Kane a day before the season started, changing philosophies under Ange Postecoglou and having to deal with one of the worst injury crises known to man, it was an impressive performance for the boys in white.

With attacking football and a manager who is determined to win at all costs, the future looks bright for Spurs. "The future looks Lilywhite," as previous videos from the club have suggested, yet they still need to undergo a rebuild in north London. They started in 2023, bringing in a handful of players such as Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, one of the best signings in the league , and Brennan Johnson, but there is still a long road ahead before they even get close to the elite teams of Arsenal and Manchester City .

This is a project for the club after all. Their pre-season tour in the summer of 2024 allowed them to continue building on the foundations which they laid in 2023, and if their start so far is anything to go by, then Spurs could be in for a very exciting season indeed.

Man United will be hoping their pre-season tour can mark the beginning of a new era at Old Trafford.

Pre-Season Tour

Tottenham made the trip to Asia once again for their 2024 pre-season tour, initially playing in Japan before continuing their summer preparations in South Korea. The Lilywhites have a history of going on tour in Asia in recent times. Excluding the years impacted by the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, when Spurs were forced to stay at home, 2018 was the last time they travelled somewhere else.

Most recently, they visited Thailand and Singapore in 2023, while Antonio Conte prepared his side for a prolonged and tiring 2022/23 season with a trip to South Korea. The current incumbent, Ange Postecoglou, made his support of the decision clear earlier in 2024. The Australian was in charge of Yokohama Marinos from 2018 to 2021, as he quickly created a connection with the side's passionate fanbase. He knows all about the country, which he highlighted when the announcement was made.

I'm delighted to be taking Tottenham Hotspur to Japan this summer for an exciting fixture against Vissel Kobe. This friendly will be another step in our preparations for the 2024/25 season.

It's not hard to see why Spurs chose to visit South Korea either. Club captain Son Heung-min , who is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in Tottenham's history , has built up a huge fanbase worldwide, but more specifically in his home country. If you go to a Spurs match, you will see a constant stream of supporters from the nation cheering the side on. They're not there just to see Son either, despite what some may suggest; they genuinely care about the club, just like any other supporter. This year, they had an easy option to see the Lilywhites instead of trekking halfway across the world. Announced on the day after the close of the season, Donna-Maria Cullen, Executive Director at the club, made her delight about the decision clear :

It is fantastic to have the opportunity to engage with our huge fanbase in the country. I know Sonny in particular can't wait to play again in front of his home fans, and it will be exciting for him to return while representing us as Club Captain.

Fixtures and Results

Tottenham started the pre-season period by travelling to face Hearts in Scotland. They have only played one another twice in competitive matches, with Spurs winning one and drawing the other back in 2011. The Premier League side romped to a 5-1 victory at Tynecastle in mid-July, fielding a strong lineup which included Son, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. Tottenham completed the first UK leg of their tour with a London derby against Queens Park Rangers, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Yves Bissouma and Dane Scarlett.

Following that, Spurs embarked upon a trip to Asia, which saw them face Japanese giants Vissel Kobe and a K-League XI. The two fixtures produced 12 goals, as Spurs narrowly edged each helter-skelter contest. Son contributed three of the strikes while the academy sensation, Mikey Moore , continued his upward trajectory with an 88th-minute winner against Vissel Kobe.

Spurs scheduled two games in eight days against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich . The capital club were comfortably outplayed in their first match in Seoul, shipping a pair of goals to the Bavarian outfit led by Vincent Kompany before Pedro Porro halved the deficit. Postecoglou was too satisfied with the intensity of Tottenham's fitness and tactical preparation to be concerned with the result.

What's important is the training. As far as I'm aware, you don't get points for friendly games.

Then, the Visit Malta Cup was up for grabs when the two clubs reconvened at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, 10th August, a week before the start of the Premier League season. The history between the two sides in recent years doesn't need much of an introduction.

The last competitive encounter between Spurs and Bayern saw them go head-to-head in the Champions League group stage. Bayern won 3-1 at home, but more memorably, they destroyed Mauricio Pochettino's side 7-2 in north London. It is widely seen as one of the most humiliating performances of all time .

More recently, two players have moved from Spurs to Bayern. Harry Kane left his boyhood club, despite being their greatest striker of all time, in 2023 to join the Bavarian behemoths. It was in search of trophies, yet in his first campaign, he failed to win a single piece of silverware. Kane was still resting after his Euro 2024 excursions during pre-season but Eric Dier, another former Spurs stalwart, came off the bench in Seoul.

Following that initial 2-1 defeat, Spurs were again consigned to a loss by their Bavarian counterparts, going down 3-2 - a match that might perhaps now be best remembered for Kane choosing to turn down the opportunity to lift a trophy in front of the home support.

Mikey Moore is Tottenham's new teenage sensation ready to take the world by storm.

Importance of Pre-Season

Pre-season is always an important - and often forgotten - part of the season. It can be the difference between winning the title and narrowly missing out, especially when the tactics are still new and fresh in the memory. Postecoglou has implemented an impressive style of play since joining from Celtic in 2023, but the work is only just beginning.

Liverpool Pre-Season Guide: Tour, Fixtures, Kick-Off Times & How to Watch

Liverpool's pre-season tour has allowed Arne Slot to get his first experience of life as the club's new manager.

He has repeatedly mentioned how this is a multi-year project in N17 - and he will be the last person to say he was happy with finishing fifth in the league table . Spurs have suffered from inconsistency, a common trend in the first year of a rebuild, but it will be up to the Australian to change that going into his second year in charge.

The club's big-money summer acquisition of Dominic Solanke came too late for him to partake in any first-team action over pre-season, but the hope will be that he will be able to hit the ground running as soon as he gets up to speed with his new teammates. The striker signed from Bournemouth will no doubt feel the pressure of having to shoulder the majority of the goal-scoring burden in the 2024/2025 Premier League season, but given his exploits with the Cherries, you certainly wouldn't put it past him doing exactly that.

The Lilywhites will have serious hopes of finishing in the top four and clinching a Champions League place this time around after narrowly missing out the season before. An exciting clutch of young talent, led by the likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Mikey Moore could usher in a new and bright era at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham are making preparations for the 2024/25 Premier League season, with their summer 2024 pre-season tour.

Spurs set up an Asia-Pacific tour for summer 2023, with Ange Postecoglou showing off the early work with his style of play.

A clash with West Ham played out in Australia, before disruption hit the tour, with matches against Leicester City and AS Roma unable to go ahead.

They instead faced Lion City Sailors in Singapore, before a match against Shakhtar Donetsk at home and then a final faceoff with Barcelona in Catalonia.

Postecoglou will certainly be hopeful that there’s less disruption this time around, as he prepares his side for the upcoming campaign.

With that said, here’s a look at everything you need to know about the Tottenham pre-season 2024 campaign.

Queens Park Rangers v Tottenham Hotspur - Pre-Season Friendly

Tottenham Hotspur announced its pre-season tour list of players who will be on the plane, as the club prepares for games against Vissel Kobe in Tokyo (Saturday) before traveling to Seoul, South Korea to take on the K League All Stars (July 31) and a matchup with FC Bayern (August 3). Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany announced today that Harry Kane will not be making the trip to face his old side in South Korea.

Seeing many of the first team players coming back for training the last few weeks and playing two pre-season games thus far with victories against Hearts (5-1) and QPR (2-0), the team now makes flight to Japan and South Korea.

The official list has been named in alphabetical:

  • George Abbott
  • Brandon Austin
  • Lucas Bergvall
  • Yves Bissouma
  • Alfie Devine
  • Jamie Donley
  • Radu Dragusin (Korea only)
  • Archie Gray
  • Luca Gunter
  • Tyrese Hall
  • Brennan Johnson
  • Dejan Kulusevski
  • Will Lankshear
  • James Maddison
  • Mikey Moore
  • Ashley Phillips
  • Pedro Porro
  • Richarlison
  • Emerson Royal
  • Pape Matar Sarr
  • Dane Scarlett
  • Oliver Skipp
  • Manor Solomon
  • Heung-Min Son
  • Djed Spence
  • Destiny Udogie
  • Guglielmo Vicario
  • Alejo Veliz
  • Timo Werner
  • Alfie Whiteman

A few omissions from making the tour are Fraser Forster — as the club says he is still rehabbing at Hotspur Way from a fractured foot. The likes of Micky van de Ven and Copa America winners of Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso are expected to join the squad closer to the start of the season as they’ve earned a rest for making it far in international competitions.

Other notes from the press release: Spanish players Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilion were granted permission to stay back as they look for possible transfer moves.

Tottenham pre-season friendlies: Six games in 25 days with Asian tour and reunion with Harry Kane in Bayern double-header

Premier League clubs are making plans for the next season by arranging pre-season friendlies across the globe.

While Manchester United , Liverpool , and Arsenal are set to visit the United States this summer, Tottenham Hotspur will embark on a pre-season tour in Asia .

Their first friendly is scheduled to take place in Scotland. They will play against Hearts at the Tynecastle Stadium in Edinburgh on July 17.

Ange Postecoglou’s side will meet Queens Park Rangers three days later in London before heading for their pre-season friendlies in Asia.

The Premier League outfit will face Japanese giants Vissel Kobe at the National Stadium in Tokyo on July 27.

An All-Star team representing the top Korean league will meet them at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea on August 1.

This will be followed by a blockbuster fixture with Bayern Munich at the same venue three days later.

The game will see Spurs reunited with their record goalscorer Harry Kane, who left to join the Bundesliga giants in a £100 million move last summer.

The two sides will meet again in another pre-season friendly in the Visit Malta Cup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 10.

Tottenham made an excellent start to the 2023-24 campaign under Postecoglou, winning eight of their ten opening matches.

However, they failed to maintain their levels and suffered a slump in form towards the end of the season to miss out on a Champions League berth.

Tottenham pre-season 2024/25: Fixtures and schedule

  • Tottenham are in the midst of 2024/25 preparations
  • Spurs again visited the Far East for friendlies
  • Homecoming for Harry Kane & Eric Dier in August

By Ewan Ross-Murray | Aug 3, 2024, 4:43 PM GMT+1

Tottenham have made a great start to pre-season

Ange Postecoglou has installed some sturdy foundations in N17, but it'll be up to the Australian and his squad to build upon them in 2024/25.

Tottenham's unlikely title dream at the start of the former Celtic boss' tenure was quickly dashed following a fateful November night against Chelsea and it's fair to say Spurs didn't get back to their previous exuberant levels after they lost James Maddison and Micky van de Ven to injuries.

Both returned long before the season's end but a stuttering finale to Postecoglou's debut season means the Lilywhites will be competing in the new-look Europa League and not the Champions League next term. Still, there's plenty of scope for optimism among Spurs supporters.

Here are Tottenham 's pre-season plans ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Where are Tottenham going for 2024/25 pre-season?

Vissel Kobe v Tottenham Hotspur - Pre-Season Friendly

Rather confusingly, Tottenham actually played their first friendly on 22 May against Newcastle United - just three days after the Premier League season ended. However, that technically counted as a 2023/24 post-season fixture rather than a 2024/25 pre-season game.

The Lilywhites announced in April that they would be heading to Japan as part of their pre-season in July, travelling to the country for the first time in 33 years. Postecoglou's squad then travelled across to South Korea for two friendlies against a K-League All Stars team and Bayern Munich in Seoul.

Tottenham pre-season 2024/25 squad

There was a healthy dose of first team stars that journeyed to the Far East, although Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Giovani Lo Celso were among those that missed the trip.

Fraser Forster continues to nurse a foot injury, while Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon were left at home to help them secure exits - Gil has joined Girona on loan.

Postecoglou has already handed Tottenham's exciting youngsters plenty of minutes throughout pre-season, with Mikey Moore, new arrival Lucas Bergvall, and Jamie Donley having shone brightest.

Tottenham pre-season 2024/25 confirmed schedule

Spurs got their pre-season campaign underway against Hearts in Edinburgh. It was a clinical outing for Postecoglou's outfit, with four goals arriving in the second half. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the first 45 minutes before Will Lankshear, Moore, Djed Spence and Ashley Phillips all got in on the act in a 5-1 win.

Tottenham then claimed a 2-0 win over Championship side Queens Park Rangers in west London and are now preparing for their summer tour. Yves Bissouma and Dane Scarlett got themselves on the scoresheet at Loftus Road.

They kicked off their Asian adventure with an exciting 3-2 win over Japanese outfit Vissel Kobe. Moore once again found the back of the net, scoring an 88th-minute winner following earlier goals from Pedro Porro and Heung-min Son.

Spurs' clash with K-League All Stars was similarly entertaining. The Lilywhites won 4-3 and found themselves three goals to the good at the break. While they let their opponents back into the game after the restart, Will Lankshear's goal ensured that they maintained their perfect pre-season record.

The first of two meetings with Bayern Munich ended in a 2-1 defeat in Seoul. A beautiful Pedro Porro strike wasn't enough to earn Spurs a draw following goals from Gabriel Vidovic and Leon Goretzka. The second clash takes place on 10 August in north London, with Harry Kane and Eric Dier returning to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time since recent exits.

Full schedule of Tottenham’s pre-season fixtures and where to watch them

Bharad Thirumalai

Tottenham Hotspur are set to play four pre-season matches across July before their Premier League campaign kicks off at the start of August.

Much like the rest of the teams in Europe, Spurs were not able to organise any pre-season international tours in 2020 and 2021 due to the impact of the pandemic.

However, the Lilywhites will be back on the road again this pre-season, with a trip to South Korea and Israel on the agenda.

Antonio Conte’s men will play face a K-League All-Star team and Sevilla in two exhibition games in the Coupang Play Series during their stay in Asia.

After their Asian tour, they’ll return to the UK to take on Rangers before flying to Israel to compete in the I-Tech Cup against AS Roma managed by former manager Jose Mourinho.

Here is the full schedule of Spurs’ pre-season matches (via GiveMeSport ):

13 July – Team K League vs Tottenham (KO TBC) – Seoul World Cup Stadium

16 July – Tottenham vs Sevilla (12:00) – Suwon World Cup Stadium

23 July – Rangers vs Tottenham (15:00) – Ibrox

30 July – Tottenham vs Roma (KO TBC) – Sammy Ofer Stadium

Where to Watch:

Tottenham fans can stream all four matches live on ‘SpursPlay’ – a new app that will be launched this summer and is expected to be the new home of the club’s video content.

Fans can learn more about the soon-to-launch app and express their interest in the platform by registering here .

Spurs Web Opinion

Four pre-season matches do not give Conte and his coaching staff much time to experiment with different combinations. That means that all four matches have to be utilised to the fullest and I suspect we will see Conte approaching them like competitive fixtures.

Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season tour begins on July 18 - get full schedule

Tottenham Hotspur have roped in English playmaker James Maddison ahead of their 2023 pre-season tour.

tottenham hotspur pre season tour

Tottenham Hotspur will be keen to get a strong pre-season under their belt before the start of their 2023-24 Premier League campaign .

Spurs had a below-par season last time around after they finished eighth in the Premier League standings and missed out on European football.

They will be eager to make amends in the upcoming campaign and will travel to Asia-Pacific for their pre-season tour 2023 .

The north London club will begin their pre-season tour by travelling to Australia for a friendly against West Ham United at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Tuesday, July 18.

After facing off against their London rivals in Australia, Spurs will then jet off to the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand to face Leicester City on Sunday, July 23.

Their next stop will be another Asian country in Singapore where Spurs will take on Italian club AS Roma at the Singapore National Stadium on Wednesday, July 26.

Tottenham’s match against Roma will conclude their pre-season tour to Asia, however, they will return to England and play one more game before the start of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign.

Once back in England, Tottenham Hotspur will welcome Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Sunday, August 6 for their final pre-season game, which will be exactly one week prior to their first Premier League encounter of the season against Brentford.

Ahead of pre-season, Spurs have roped in playmaker James Maddison to their squad, while the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Davinson Sanchez look destined to leave the club.

Tottenham 2024/25 Pre-Season Tour: Fixtures, Kick-Off & Streaming Info

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham will head to Asia for their pre-season tour ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The North London did have the opportunity to secure Champions League football for next season. But, unfortunately, they ended up missing out on it following a poor run in the final stages of the campaign.

However, it could still be considered a great first season for Postecoglou at the club.

The Australian manager has helped Spurs secure Europa League football despite having to deal with the departure of Harry Kane and numerous injuries. More importantly, he has got them playing some attractive and attacking brand of football.

Spurs are now gearing up for a pre-season tour to Asia. They will travel to South Korea and Japan to kick start Postecoglou’s second season in charge. The initial fixtures will be played in Japan following which they head to South Korea before returning to London for a final friendly fixture against Bayern Munich.

They have already announced the fixtures for their upcoming tour. According to a report from GiveMeSport , they will kickstart the tour with a game against Japanese giants Vissel Kobe. The match will be played in the Japan National Stadium, Tokyo on the 27th of July.

After this fixture, Tottenham will square up against German giants Bayern Munich twice. The first clash will take place in Seol on the 3rd of August before the two teams meet again in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 10th August (17:30 BST).

While only three fixtures have been confirmed so far, more matches will be announced in the coming days as is the case with pre-season tours.

The North London club have a history of heading to Asia for tours and this could be a great way to prepare for the upcoming season.

Tottenham nightmare international break scenario if key trio injured for Arsenal

Tottenham have a huge encounter against north London rivals Arsenal straight after the international break, but what would be the worst case scenario to return to for Ange Postecoglou and Co.?

Tottenham return from their international break with a huge fixture: the North London Derby against Arsenal. Ange Postecoglou will be hoping to return to winning ways after a mixed start to the Premier League season.

Spurs began with a draw away to newly-promoted Leicester City having taken the lead and thoroughly dominated proceedings, only to concede a second-half equaliser to Jamie Vardy. They followed this with a 4-0 thumping of Everton to add plenty of encouragement to the start of the season.

However, after once again dominating on their away trip to Newcastle, Spurs fans made the long trip back to London with no points to show for it after a late winner from Alexander Isak.

A large chunk of the Spurs squad have since joined up with their respective national teams, with Spurs in action after the international break on Sunday, September 15. A lot could happen between now and then so football.london has taken a look at what a nightmare international break could look like for Tottenham .

READ MORE: Tottenham transfer verdict amid £125m spend, Daniel Levy decisions and Ange Postecoglou question

Key trio still not back

It's not been an ideal start, but a win against Arsenal would go a long way to changing perceptions about the beginning of their season. To do that, Postecoglou will need all resources at his disposal.

But new signing Dominic Solanke missed the last two games due to an ankle injury, while Micky van de Ven and Richarlison were both absent from the trip to Newcastle with their own issues. Postecoglou will be hoping all are available for the huge clash against Arsenal.

The absence of a recognised striker has arguably already cost Spurs, with a number of chances missed in the away game at Newcastle. Solanke and Richarlison both being absent for the clash against Arsenal would undoubtedly be a massive loss for Spurs.

More injuries

An unfortunate reality of the international break is that some players will develop injuries while away with their countries. Be it pushing themselves to the max in a new setup or travelling thousands of miles, players are put under stress and fatigue in a short period of time - which could be especially relevant just weeks after starting a brand new season.

One man Spurs are always wary about is captain Son Heung-min, who regularly traverses the globe to represent South Korea. The 32-year-old has managed to keep himself relatively injury-free over the last few years despite a huge volume of minutes played, but it will only be a growing concern as he advances in years.

Elsewhere, there will be concern in the unlikely event that Guglielmo Vicario picks up an issue while away with Italy. More injuries for Spurs would certainly be a problem ahead of the clash against Arsenal.

While the English transfer window has closed, there are a few remaining open as Spurs look to seal any more departures - with Alfie Devine recently leaving on a short-term deal for Westerlo.

The club also want to move on Sergio Reguilon for the rest of the season, with the Spanish international seemingly having no part in Postecoglou's plan for the season. The defender stayed away from the pre-season tour to try and secure a move, but it still has not come to pass.

Spurs should be fine to meet financial obligations for the season, but with a keen eye on the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules they'll be keen to move on a player unlikely to feature who is currently earning first-team wages.

If a deal can't be agreed for Reguilon's exit, it helps nobody: a player knowing he stands little chance of featuring will be an issue to manage at the training ground, and will become a talking point for the manager should performances of other players dip at all.

Tottenham Hotspur balance rebuild and expectations as North London Derby vs. Arsenal nears

Spurs went winless in the north london derby last season.

spurs.jpg

Ange Postecoglou's first season at Tottenham Hotspur was, simply put, complicatedly eventful. A dream start as the Premier League's last unbeaten team was swiftly crushed as injuries and suspensions derailed their campaign , exposing some weaknesses that saw them land in fifth place by season's end, overperforming on preseason expectations and underperforming on early season hype. Inconsistent as it was, it was also a job well done as far as rebuilding seasons go -- Spurs learned what worked and what did not, in theory offering a clear glimpse at what needed to change over the summer to build upon last season.

A few short months after capping off Postecoglou's first season with a 3-0 win at Sheffield United, it feels like little has changed and with just one win to start the 2024-25 campaign, it feels like Spurs are in a peculiar spot.

Postecoglou will roll with a squad that resembles the one he had last season, and there are some advantages to this. Not only will he have the benefit of continuity with a group of players that actually showed plenty of promise last season, the Australian can also boast that his team is well-rested. Only a handful of Spurs players played a major chunk of minutes at the summer competitions -- center backs Cristan Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin, as well as midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

There's no need to necessarily conflate consistency with stagnation, either, in large part because Spurs actually were busy during a less-than-exciting summer transfer window. It is just that they made one, ready-to-use signing this summer in Dominic Solanke, who scored 21 goals for Bournemouth last season and has the potential to impress for the club once he recovers from a short-term injury. The majority of their summer funds were used on teenagers like 19-year-old winger Wilson Odobert and 18-year-old midfielders Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray, all of whom have already made their Premier League debuts but feel like picks for the future rather than the present.

This is not inherently unfamiliar territory for Spurs, who have a history of betting on youngsters and did so successfully during Mauricio Pochettino's impressive spell at the club. Though summer signings should not be considered the be-all and end-all of a team's ambition, the transfer strategy feels not just like a bet on the future -- it also feels like a bet that Postecoglou's tweaks will be enough to keep them competitive now.

It is too early in the 2024-25 season to actually suggest that is a poor wager, especially considering Postecoglou has already put in the hard work of building a tactical foundation that is effective at its best. Spurs play with a clear, attack-minded identity, the first building block for any successful team. The problems that cost them at times last season, though, have gotten in their way again this season.

Despite ranking within the Premier League's top four in most possession, passing and attacking categories so far, Spurs have just one win in three games to start the season. Postecoglou's side have shown signs of being wasteful to start this season -- they had nearly 70% of the ball in their 1-1 draw against Leicester City and 12 shots but generated just 1.18 expected goals, and in their 2-1 loss to Newcastle United had 65% possession and 13 shots but just 1.26 expected goals. They have struggled somewhat to create meaningful chances despite their offensive prowess, which includes Maddison and Son Heung-min, who started last season in very strong form.

Spurs' early season failure to close out games goes hand-in-hand with a defensive culpability that is a feature, not a bug of Postecoglou's attack-first system. His preferred high line constantly leaves the team susceptible, something that a team could overcome through some combination of tactical changes or personnel. Postecoglou may have to find a fix fast considering the personnel he has might not be up for the task -- while the actual back line feels resolved, the midfield has been off to a rocky start this season. The trio of Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have yet to impress, and this season could tell if this is either a temporary problem or one that will require new additions. Tottenham's strange deadline day deal involving Real Betis' Johnny Cardoso could offer a solution , but the team is still months away from making a decision on that front.

Sunday's faceoff with Arsenal, as a result, will serve as an all-important check-in on Tottenham's unique bet on their present, especially considering the less-than-ideal results are no reason to write them off. They are much more than a plucky underdog against last season's runners-up for the Premier League title, as their attacking potential demonstrates. Spurs may have the benefit of playing against a depleted Arsenal -- Declan Rice is suspended for the game, while captain Martin Odegaard might miss out with an ankle injury . A near-identical version of this year's Spurs team also played two competitive games against a high-flying rival last season, tying 2-2 at Emirates Stadium last September while losing 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April.

The latest edition of the North London Derby, as a result, is not a foregone conclusion. Even as the underdogs, though, Spurs will have to prove that they can get out of their own way against a team that's rightfully comfortable in their own skin. The performance, more so than the result, could be a bellwether for what to expect this season from Spurs -- and if there is a dissonance between their future-focused summer business and the progression of Postecoglou's vision for competing in the present.

Pre-season has begun!

Pre-season training is underway for our men’s first team squad.

A number of players returned to Hotspur Way after their summer holidays today (Monday 4 July) to begin work ahead of the 2022/23 campaign – those who were on international duty during June will return in a few days’ time.

As usual on the first day, the players underwent a series of fitness and medical tests before returning to the training pitches outside.

Our first action of pre-season will be on Wednesday 13 July when we take on Team K League in the Coupang Play Series in Seoul as part of our tour of South Korea – you’ll be able to watch the game live on our brand new video service, SPURSPLAY .
