22 Easy, Breezy Beach Hairstyles for Your Next Getaway

trip hairstyles

@madisonbaileybabe

There are many keys to a perfect beach day: You'll want the perfect snack, water, SPF , perhaps an umbrella, and of course, a plan to keep your hair in check amidst the wind, sand, and surf. It can be stressful to have the wind aggressively whip your hair in every direction at some inevitable point during your blissful afternoon, so finding a fun hairstyle that minimizes this can be game-changing and allow you to fully enjoy your time.

If you're looking for something simple to wear on the shore, you can never go wrong with the basic topknot bun or high pony, but we tapped experts to help you get creative for the perfect beach day look. Keep reading for 22 of the best beach hairstyles to try on your next day in the sun.

Meet the Expert

  • Michelle Cleveland  is a hairstylist specializing in extensions and the owner of Hair Addict Salon in New Jersey.
  • Jennifer Korab is a New Jersey-based hairstylist, as well as the creator and founder of Renaissance Salon & Spa.
  • Ashley Streicher  is a Garnier celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Beverly Hills salon  Striiike .
  • Hailee Kay is an Amika pro educator and hairstylist. She shares her colorful braiding creations with 123,000 followers and counting on TikTok.

Loose Messy Bun

We are fully confident that there is no hairstyle Ciara can't pull off, including the loose, beachy bun that's a chic and practical classic for a hot beach day. "This [updo] is great for textured hair that plays well with the humidity," Ferrara explains. "Let your hair’s natural texture fly from last night’s curly style."

On how to achieve this look: "Pull out two front pieces and blow dry or curl with a curling iron," Ferrara says. "Adding a mousse like the Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse to the lengths and slept-on curls will give the [desired] texture for the messy bun on top. Pile on top of head and secure with a ponytail elastic or a clip. Spray a salt spray, like the Oribe Après Beach Spray, and go have fun." This look works best on wavy to curly hair.

These space buns are out of this world... literally. A fun twist on the classic bun, space buns are an easy way to get hair out of your face and tamed on the beach (and the red carpet).

To achieve this look, split your hair into two even sections with a middle part, and use a brush to slick the hair up into two mini buns. Use hair spray, mousse, or gel to hold the style in place. This look works well on all hair types.

Beach Waves

@justinemarjan

If you prefer wearing your hair down and are looking for an option that looks great even if it gets a little messy, Marjan says to look no further than the style named after the beach itself. "Dorit Kemsley rocks these gorgeous soft waves [that are] perfect for summer, created using Great Lengths tape-in extensions for the beautiful bright blonde honey hues," Marjan shares. "Use a GHD flat iron to create a soft bend by rotating it as it glides down the length of the hair."

@selenagomez

Best way to keep cool in the summer? Chop your hair and let it run free. "This style is great for the summer because if there is humidity, the hair will kind of find its own way," Ferrara says. "As opposed to a fully straight or natural look, this wavy blowout style will work in many ways with nature and the weather."

You can achieve this look using a leave in conditioner that fights frizz—Ferrara recommends the Alterna Caviar CC Cream. Blow dry damp hair using a brush, adding volume by pulling the hair up and away from where it naturally falls. Once hair is dry, use the CC cream to accentuate the waves by scrunching a small amount into the style.

"This will work on a variety of textures, but best on straight to wavy hair," Ferrara also notes. "Avoid with oily textures."

@gabunion

"Gabrielle Union’s braids scream summer beachy, vacation vibes," Cleveland says. "Once you set these braids in, your style is as low-maintenance as they come. Besides adding some scalp oils during the day and wearing a sateen or silk protective scarf/bonnet at night, there’s virtually nothing more to do for this look except look fierce ."

We couldn't agree more. Whether you achieve the style at home or get a set of cornrows at your next hair appointment, you're sure to look stunning all beach trip long.

Natural Curls

@madisonbaileybabe

If you're blessed with natural curls or waves, Ferrara encourages you to set them free. "This summer style has no limits," Ferrara says. "Take it to the beach or to dinner on the marina. This hair works with humidity, salt water, and sea spray. A beautiful wave/curl pattern will work best with this—to grow the most optimal and conditioned hair I always recommend a hair vitamin, such as the Vitafusion Gorgeous Hair, Skin, and Nails Gummies."

"On very wet hair, apply a curl gel— the Oribe Curl Gloss is my favorite—making sure to evenly spread the product from root to tip," Ferrara says of how to create the style. "Turn [your] head over and scrunch upward to accentuate curls. Diffuse with a dryer until the hair is about 75% [dry], and off you go. Take care not to rake your fingers through the hair, [and] pile on top of your head while swimming." This look works with any texture with a slight wave to it.

Brimmed Hat

@ khatrabbani

If you want to keep your hair flowing and free, an accessory can make all of the difference. Here, the perfect brimmed beach hat helps keep hair out of the face. This doubles as additional skin protection (though of course, SPF comes first) and can be crucial for a hot sunny day. A beach hat is great to rock with any hair type.

Slicked Bun

When you think of Alicia Keys, you probably think of her always-put-together sleek updos. And since the beach makes us think of windblown, out-of-control strands, what better solution than a guaranteed out-of-face style? "A slicked-back chignon has been a summer go to of celebs for years," Ferrara says. "It’s easy and classic look goes from pool to beach to nightclub in a snap."

On wet hair, dab gel on a comb before pulling your hair into your desired bun location, whether that's on top of the head, at the nape of your neck, or somewhere in between. Once smoothed, twist the hair in a circular motion until it twists onto itself, then secure with hairpins, an elastic, or a scrunchie. "To add more to the style, play with your part, make it into two buns, or even a braid," Ferrara advises. The best part about this look? It works on all textures.

Money Piece Braids

@gigihadid

If you're having trouble getting the front section of your hair to stay consistent throughout your beach day, Ferrara has a solution for the sometimes-messy baby hairs. "It helps to keep baby hairs around the face at bay, while letting your natural hair or blowout and style do the rest," Ferrara says. "Style your hair however you like: natural texture with curl gloss, or blow out with brush, flat ironed, or curled. Take the front 3/4 inch on either side of the part (middle works best), and braid the hair—you can fasten with elastics or let the ends fly to add more whimsy to the style."

This style works on any hair texture in a down style. If you want to avoid the elastics while ensuring your braids stay put, try lightly backcombing the ends and securing them with a bit of hairspray.

Eva Mendes' signature scarf bun is the perfect red carpet look, but it also doubles as the perfect beach hairstyle solution. "[Mendes] rocks this scarf bun that is perfect for a day at the beach," Korab says. "This is a practical way to keep your hair up while adding a little flair."

This is especially practical on a windy beach day, when flyaways and baby hairs are a common occurrence and many of us simply want an easy way to keep hair out of the face. The style works for all hair types.

Dutch Braids

On the same note of versatile looks, Dutch braids work for both a day at the beach and a glam night out. "Dutch braids are extremely popular and comfortable to wear," Korab says. "These braids give you the freedom to play activities without worrying about your hair. Kim K rocks this look effortlessly."

You can create Dutch braids without any product, but for a day at the beach, hairspray may be your friend to keep them in place.

@hannahg11

Sometimes a wispy high pony is all you need to achieve the perfect beach look. Hannah Godwin rocks this beachy updo, which successfully keeps her hair pulled together and out of her face. To achieve this look, simply brush through your hair and pull it back with an elastic as loosely or tightly as desired, and you're ready to take on the sun.

Half-Up, Half-Down

If you're torn between tying your hair back into a ponytail and letting it flow free, we invite you to find a happy medium with this half-up, half-down look. Rihanna rocks it on the red carpet, but stylists say this is the perfect beach option, too.

To achieve this look, split the hair in half where the top of your ears meet your head and pull the top half of the hair into a high pony. Tease the base for some volume, add product where necessary based on your hair type, and voilà.

Barely-There Waves

Ashley Streicher

"To me, this is the epitome of beach hair," Streicher says. "It's relaxed waves that look natural but have that texture and volume of a mermaid. Her hair looks like it’s been 'worn in' in a good way—it still maintains its shine and luster, but has a few strays and manageable piece-y-ness."

"I love this style for the relaxed feel," she continues. "You can tell that this style makes her feel comfortable and cool. Just look at her, rocking that beach hair like she was born with it!"

To recreate this look, Streicher says a good texture spray is key. "For a good beachy look, I like to add the real 'lived-in' texture effect after we’ve done the waves with a couple different size and styles of barrel (keep it looking natural), adding Garnier Fructis Style Texture Tease Dry Touch Finishing Spray from roots to ends," she says. "Not only does this dry spray hold the style all day, it gives good, piece-y. voluminous texture that you can only get from the beach."

Single Braid

If box or dutch braids aren't your thing, maybe a single braid is. "This is a simple way to keep hair out of your face for the perfect day on the beach," Kay says.

To create the perfect single braid, Kay says to start by applying Amika's The Kure Multi-Task Repair Treatment to your hair before pulling it back and braiding it down the length. After that's finished, smooth your ends with a small amount of Amika's The Closer Instant Repair Cream: "This will protect your hair from the elements and give it time to soak up all the benefits from the treatment while you enjoy the beach!"

Ashley Graham takes a messy bun to new heights, adding sophisticated flare with the addition of waves. First, place your hair up in a messy bun and use a curling iron to add texture to any loose pieces. Finish by curling two tendrils to frame your face.

Half-Up With Ribbons

@haileybieber

One cute way to style your hair for a beach getaway? Accessorize. Make like Hailey Bieber and create a half-up style by tying two pieces of hair up with ribbons. Add additional ribbons for emphasis.

Middle Part with Texture

@makeupvincent /Instagram

Adding a little texture to the hair is a great idea if you're going to the beach. Here, Nicole Richie shows off a look that can be replicated by air-drying hair, then spray in a se salt spray through the ends before scrunching with the fingers. Try a product like Sexy Hair's Texture Beach'n Spray Texturizing Beach Spray.

If you have a modern, blunt bob, the natural inclination is to wear it super straight. But for a beach vacation, try utilizing a center part and air-drying it, to show off any natural texture.

Afro Puffs with Bangs

Afro puffs are a protective style , making them ideal for when you want to throw your hair up, and keep it healthy. Keep your puffs super casual by wearing dreadlock-style bangs over your forehead.

Messy Bun With Dreadlocks

@teyanataylor / Instagram

Teyana Taylor looks great in any hairstyle, though we're partial to her messy bun, which is accented by a mix of dreadlocks and loose tendrils. This look is ideal for those with ultra-long hair, as it allows for more styling opportunities.

Mermaid Waves

Mary Phillips

What better hairstyle for the beach than mermaid waves? This look is easy to replicate, even if you have super-straight hair. Ju use a three-barrel hair waver (like Mermade Hair's 1.25” OG Waver , $79), and wave your hair in layers, alternating the direction to create volume and dimension.

A simple bun or a loose top knot is perfect for maintaining volume and ease. For medium-length hair , a half French braid offers comfort and style, while a Dutch side braid is ideal for longer hair, doubling as a cushion for sleeping. How to Wear Your Hair On Rainy Days

Going somewhere a little drizzly? You can of course wear any hairstyle you like when it’s rainy and/or humid, but you’ll want to consider the frizz-factor that comes with certain styles.

I find that keeping the front sections of my hair secured or pulled back helps to minimize the “lion’s mane” that can pop up when you have curly hair like mine.

Whatever your hair type, go with the hairstyle that works best for your hair texture and frizz level.

Messy Bun Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Start by brushing all of the hair into a high ponytail.
  • Step 2 / Take a hair band and wrap it once over the ponytail.
  • Step 3 / Twist the band over your dominant hand and then use the other hand to spread the hair around the ponytail base.
  • Step 4 / Wrap the hair band twice more over this base. You can wrap it more or less depending on the thickness of your hair.
  • Step 5 / Pull on the edges of the bun until it’s as big as you want. T
  • Step 6 / Take the hair left sticking out and wrap it around to the front of the head, tucking it into the hair band to form another loop at the front of the bun.

trip hairstyles

Half Up Bun Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Start by gathering a section of hair at the top of the head.
  • Step 2 / Twist the section together and wrap it clock-wise into spiral then pull the end through the middle and continue wrapping the ends around the bun.
  • Step 3 / Wrap a clear elastic band around the bun and then pin down any edges so it’s flush with the head.

Topsy Tail Side Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / For this style, bring all of the hair over one shoulder and tie it together with an elastic band.
  • Step 2 / Now tie a second elastic band about 3 inches down from the first elastic.
  • Step 3 / Create a gap in the hair between the elastic bands and flip the ends through the gap to create a twist.
  • Step 4 / Then you can pull on the edges to make the twists a little bit bigger so they’re easier to see.
  • Step 5 / Next tie a third elastic band another 3 inches down and then create a gap above the band and clip the ends through the gap.
  • Step 6 / Then pull on the edges of the twists to make them a little bigger.

I love this style with a baseball cap as well and it only takes a few minutes to do.

trip hairstyles

Side Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / For this style start by bringing all of the hair over the left shoulder.
  • Step 2 / Then divide the hair into three smaller sections and cross the side strands under the middle strand.
  • Step 3 / Continue the braid down the section and then once the braid reaches the bottom you can go back over it, pulling on the edges to make the braid wider.
  • Step 4 / Tie off the end with an elastic band.
  • Step 5 / Then take a small piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic band and tie a second elastic over the bottom of the wrapped piece making sure to include the ends and this will hold the wrapped piece in place.

Two Fishtail Braids Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Begin by dividing the hair into two equal halves, a left and right side.
  • Step 2 / Take one side and divide it into three sections.
  • Step 3 / Begin a regular braid crossing the side strands over the middle strand.
  • Step 4 / Then combine two sections together and braid the rest of the section into a fishtail braid.
  • Step 5 / Half way down the hair go back over the braid, pulling on the edges to make the braid fuller.
  • Step 6 / Then just continue the braid down to the ends, pull on the edges to make the braid bigger, and tie it off with an elastic band.
  • Step 7 / Then repeat the same steps braiding the other half into a second fishtail braid.

trip hairstyles

Two Dutch Braids Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Start by dividing the hair into two equal halves and tie off one side.
  • Step 2 / Then simply braid each half into a dutch braid. As a reminder, when creating a dutch braid, the side strands are crossed under the middle strand and small sections of hair are brought into the braid as you work your way from the forehead down to the nape of the neck.
  • Step 3 / Once all of the hair is brought into the braid continue braiding the section down to the ends.
  • Step 4 / Tie off the bottom of the braid with a little clear elastic band.
  • Step 5 / Then repeat the same steps with the hair on the opposite side.

Tip: You can go back over both braids, pulling on the sides to make them fuller or leave them tight against the head, it just depends on your own personal style.

Half Up Fishtail Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / First, divide off a section of hair on both sides of the head right above the ears and tie it together at the back of the head.
  • Step 2 / Then with this tied off section, create a fishtail braid by splitting it into two sections and crossing small pieces of hair from one half over to the opposite side.
  • Step 3 / Continue the braid as far down the section as you prefer and I like to pull on the sides of the braid as I go to make it fuller and more casual and then just tie off the end of the braid with a clear baby elastic.

trip hairstyles

Low Bun Instructions:

  • Step 1 / For this style, start by  combining all of the hair together at the nape of the neck.
  • Step 2 / Take a hair band and wrap it over the hair only pulling the ponytail half way through.
  • Step 3 / Then twist the left hand which will twist the hair and the hair band at the same time and then grip the base of the ponytail with the left hand.
  • Step 4 / With the right hand, pull the hair band over the hair. This will create the base of the messy bun.
  • Step 5 / Then take any hair left sticking out and tuck it back into the hair band.

trip hairstyles

Dutch Braid Instructions:

  • Step 1 / Begin by gathering a section of hair at the top of the head and split it into three sections.
  • Step 2 / Cross the side strands under the middle strand while bringing in new sections of hair and working down the back of the head until the braids reaches the nape of the neck.
  • Step 3 / Then continue the braid down the section of hair without bringing in any new hair.
  • Step 4 / Then tie off the end of the braid with a clear elastic band.

Bonus Sleep Bun Instructions:

This next style really isn’t a wearable hairstyle but it;s great if you got a blow out or curled your hair before the trip and want to take a nap without getting any kinks in your hair.

  • Step 1 / Simply combine all of your hair together at the top of your head.
  • Step 2 / Twist it together and wrap it into a spiral or bun on the top of your head.
  • Step 3 / Then secure the ends with a claw clip.
  • Step 4 / Once you’ve arrived at your destination simply let down your hair and it’s still maintained a bit of the curl or volume you had put into it before the trip.

4 Travel-Friendly Hairstyles for Your Next Trip

Styling your hair takes a little more effort when you’re traveling. No matter if you’re all set to go on a trip with your friends or spend time with your loved one in an exotic place, it can be challenging to find a low-maintenance hairstyle.

While it’s always a good idea to carry along essential hair styling tools and products for long vacations, you’ll want to spend more time enjoying your trip than styling your hair. But at the same time, you want to rock a beautiful hairstyle and capture Instagram-worthy photos. Here are some tips to get you through.

Table of Content

What if Your Hair Lacks Length and Volume?

If you’re concerned about your short, thin, or less voluminous hair, we recommend you get a set of clip-in extensions for your next trip. Clip-in wefts are best for traveling because you can apply and remove them yourself within a matter of minutes.

Clip-in human hair extensions are low maintenance, you can use them to create many different styles, and they look entirely natural. These extensions instantly add volume, thickness, and length to your hair. And, with a little bit of care, you can wear them comfortably throughout your vacation.

Be sure, however, to buy a set of high-quality human hair extensions like Zala clip-in hair extensions . These extensions are silky and smooth, last longer, and blend perfectly with natural hair.

4 Easy and Low Maintenance Travel Hairstyles

You want simple travel-friendly hairstyles that require little to no restyling or maintenance during your excursion. Simple hairstyles also don’t require you to pack too many products and styling tools.

Here’re some beautiful but easy hairstyles for your next trip.

1. Fishtail Braid

Braids are among the most popular travel hairstyles as they cause less hair breakage than styles like ponytails. A fishtail braid is simple to achieve but gives you a sophisticated look.

Follow these steps to create the fishtail braid:

  • Start off by dividing your hair into two equal portions.
  • Grab a small section from the outer area of the left portion, swaddle it over the tip of the left part, and then insert it under the right portion.
  • Repeat step 2 on the next side, taking a small section from the right side and tugging it under the left section.
  • Continue this process, alternating between the right and left segments until the braiding is complete.
  • Finally, use a hair tie to hold your hairstyle in place, and you’re good to go!

2. Messy Bun With a Headband

The messy bun is our favorite travel hairstyle because you can achieve it within 10 to 15 seconds. Perfect for airplane travel! On top of that, it adds a dash of style to your overall look and hides any oily roots.

Here’s how you can get this hairstyle:

  • Make your hair into a ponytail and then form it into a bun of your choice, beginning from the base.
  • Put a hair tie around the bun while leaving out some loose strands.
  • Take your preferred headband and cloak it around the bun.

This hairstyle also works best with clip-in hair extensions in case your hair lacks length and volume.

3. Half-Up Top Knot

Yet another quick hairstyle, the half-up top knot is your best travel companion. It works perfectly even if your hair has greasy roots. In fact, it makes you look your very best even with a little bit of dirty hair.

Here’s how to get this hairstyle: Apply a tiny portion of dry shampoo (powder version) to the roots of your hair. Then, take the top half section of your hair and form it into a messy top knot.

Hurray, you’ve achieved the half-up top knot! That was quick, wasn’t it?

low braid.

4. Low Side Braid

Whether you’re traveling in a car or an airplane, you don’t want your hair to rub against the headrest because it can be pretty damaging and uncomfortable. With a low side braid, you can rest assured this won’t happen.

This travel hairstyle is the easiest of all; just tug your hair to the side and create a braided hairstyle. Now use a hair tie to hold it in place, and you’re done! For the strands above your collarbone, it is a good idea to use a bobby pin to keep them in place.

12 Effective Shampoos for Straight Hair that Add Body and Shine

5 quick and comfy travel-friendly hairstyles.

Travel with ease and comfort with these fun hairstyles.

In case you didn’t know, planning travel outfits is actually a thing. You know what’s also a thing? Finding the right hairstyle that’s quick, cute and comfortable to wear while traveling. Hairstyles like mid-buns and ponytails may be quite uncomfy when it’s time for a nap. Ever wondered why the center of your head felt like you got hit by something hard after a long flight? Yeah, blame your bun. And sometimes, wearing your hair down or out can leave you with parched hair — thanks to the dry airplane air. So, how about trying out hairstyles that ensure a sound rest and tangle-free hair all while still being stylish? Sounds like to perfect travel plan to us! Whether you’re taking a road trip or flying across the country, here are some of our favorite travel-friendly hairstyles to wear during your commute.

Comfy and Cute Travel-Friendly Hairstyles

1. Undone Top Knot

Ideal travel-friendly hairstyles for the rough sleeper and for the gal that simply has no time to do her hair before her red eye, involve a style that is undone, but still cute. Sweep your hair up into a messy bun. Make sure your bun is high enough to maximize comfort. This hairstyle is so easy you could do it on a plane.

2. Side Braid Ponytail

This look is a bit more polished and great for traveling, especially if you’re heading straight to your destination without any time to pull yourself together. Smooth hair into a low ponytail, then create an intricate side plait. Opt for our four-sided braid  for a more stylish and modern touch. Be sure to finish off the look with a hairspray like Dove Style + Care Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray for hold.

travel-friendly hairstyle twisted hair

3. Twist & Pin Hairstyle

This style is one of the easiest travel-friendly hairstyles to do while you’re en route to your destination. Create a low ponytail then secure with a hair tie. Twist two front sections of your hair, and pull it towards the back of your head. Gather your twisted sections and ponytail together to create a bun.

4. Natural Hair Top Knot

Resting on pillow soft curls while you travel can feel comfy, but sometimes the feeling of your curls grazing across your face and neck can feel annoying. Wrap your hair up into a quick top knot hairstyle. If your curls feel parched, reach for your travel sized oil or hair serum and smooth onto your curls before creating your bun. Try Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil   as this formula works to revive and condition your locks, resulting in shiny and smooth hair. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, undo the bun, give your hair a shake, and let your curls free.

5. Low Undone Side Bun

These days, it’s all about having the perfect in-flight beauty routine that will leave you looking and feeling fresh. Prep your hair before you move onto your in-flight skin care routine. Here’s an easy sheet mask-friendly style (meaning all your hair is out of your face), and a great way to create subtle waves to your ends post-commute. Gather hair into a low side ponytail and loop around, leaving the ends out to create a messy bun. To enhance the wavy effect, opt for some sea salt spray. This formula can create all-over body in your hair and a loose texture that’s designed to last up to 24 hours! Before you begin to disembark, undo the bun and tousle your hair.

Which of these travel-friendly hairstyles will you try on your next trip?

11 Beach Hairstyles That You Can Totally Rock This Summer

Beachy pigtails, braids, buns and more!

beach hairstyles

Planning a fun beach day or maybe a vacation? You're probably looking for some cute hairstyles that will stand up against the sun, wind, and water. Whatever your hair length or type — short , medium, long, straight, wavy , or curly — you'll want a style that will keep you cool, stay out of your face, and prevent knots and damage. Look no further: We've rounded up the best beach hairstyles for you to try for summer and beyond.

Fishtail Braid

Braiding your hair is a great way to keep strands out of your face and avoid tangling. This long fishtail braid is gorgeous and perfect for showing off your balayage tones .

Bantu Knots

Bantu knots are a protective hairstyle formed by twisting pieces of hair into small, tight buns. They are both practical and totally cute for a day at the beach.

Silky Scarf

Try pulling your hair up into a bright, silky scarf — it's chic, super simple to do, and keeps hair off of your neck and shoulders. Plus, it will help protect your strands from sun damage and color fading .

Ocean Hair Clips

Love finding starfish and seashells in the tide pools? Use them to clip back your hair! This is perfect for those of you who struggle with your bangs at the beach.

High Curly Pony

This is a great hairstyle to help keep you cool that's really easy to do, especially if you naturally have small, coily curls : Just tie hair into a high ponytail at the crown. No curls? You can use a skinny curling iron to get those pretty tight spirals.

Long Goddess Braids

If you love letting your hair down but hate brushing out the knots, try this beautiful braided hairstyle . This one is sure to protect your hair from the wind and waves.

Double Dutch Pigtails

These adorable double dutch braids can work for long or short hair . You can braid them all the way to the end, or you can stop at your neckline and tie them into loose pigtails, as seen here.

Double Dutch Buns

Here's another fun twist on double dutch braids. Start the braids at your neckline and work upwards; once you get to the top, twist them into two loose buns. If you find this difficult, you can also skip the braids and just form the buns.

Colorful Headband

Bring a pop of color to your look with a bright headband . It's very simple but flattering. Better yet, it will help keep your hair back so you don't have errant strands falling in your face on hot, sticky days.

Side Braids

Whether you prefer a ponytail or a bun, you can add small braids on the sides to give your style a little flair. It's also a great way to show off your hair color .

Half Up, Half Down

Not sure whether you want to leave your hair up or down? You can have it both ways with this half-up-half-down hairstyle . Just section off the top half of your hair and bring it into a high bun. If you have bangs or just feel like embellishing a little, you can add french braids along the top, as you see here.

7 Quick and Easy Hairstyles for Traveling 2

Must-have Hairstyle Tools

Use these essential hair tools to create manageable and gorgeous hairstyles.

1. The Classic Bun

A classic bun is a great timeless and versatile hairstyle for traveling. This choice works for almost any occasion.

How to Do It:

  • Gather your hair into a high ponytail.
  • Twist the ponytail and wrap it around its base to form a bun.
  • Secure with bobby pins or a hair tie.
  • For an effortless look, leave a few strands loose around your face.

2. The Effortless Low Ponytail

A low ponytail is chic and easy to achieve, making it perfect for exploring urban landscapes.

  • Brush your hair and gather it into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck.
  • Secure with a hair tie.
  • For added flair, wrap a small section of hair around the hair tie to conceal it.

3. The Messy Side Braid

A messy side braid exudes a relaxed and carefree vibe, making it ideal for beach vacations or outdoor adventures.

  • Gather your hair to one side.
  • Start braiding loosely from the nape of your neck.
  • Gently tug on the braid to create a messier, boho look.

4. The Half-Up Half-Down

The half-up half-down hairstyle strikes the perfect balance between casual and polished, suitable for both city explorations and beach strolls.

  • Take a section of hair from the top of your head.
  • Secure it with a hair tie or clip.
  • You can leave the bottom half straight, wavy, or curled for added texture.

5. The Top Knot

A top knot is the ultimate solution for hot and humid destinations, keeping your hair off your neck and looking effortlessly cool.

  • Twist the ponytail and wrap it around its base to create a knot.
  • Secure with bobby pins.
  • For a relaxed look, leave a few face-framing strands free.

6. The High Ponytail with a Twist

A high ponytail with a twist adds a playful and unique touch to your travel look.

  • Create a high ponytail.
  • Divide the ponytail into two sections.
  • Twist each section separately.
  • Wrap the twisted sections around each other to create a twisted ponytail.

7. The Headscarf Wrap

When you’re in a hurry or dealing with unruly hair, a headscarf wrap is a stylish and practical choice.

  • Fold a square or rectangular scarf into a long strip.
  • Place the scarf over your head, with the ends hanging down on either side.
  • Tie the ends underneath your hair at the nape of your neck.
  • Adjust the scarf to cover your head and secure it in place.

Adding accessories like hats to your travel hairstyles can elevate your look and provide practical benefits like sun protection or keeping your hair in place. Here’s an additional section on accessorizing your travel hairstyles:

8. The Hat Accent

Adding a hat to your travel hairstyle not only enhances your overall look but also serves a practical purpose by providing sun protection for your face and keeping your hair in place during windy adventures.

  • Choose a hat style that suits your destination and personal style. Options include wide-brimmed sun hats, floppy hats, baseball caps, and fedoras.
  • Pair your hat with one of the hairstyles mentioned earlier.
  • For loose hairstyles like beach waves or a messy bun, simply place the hat on your head and adjust it for comfort.
  • To complement sleeker hairstyles like a low ponytail or top knot, tuck your hair neatly under the hat or allow a few strands to peek out for a relaxed vibe.
  • Secure your hat with hat pins or clips on windy days to prevent it from flying off.
  • Consider choosing a packable hat that can be easily folded or rolled up in your luggage.
  • Hats can also be a stylish way to disguise a less-than-perfect hair day while on the go.

By incorporating hats as accessories into your travel hairstyles, you not only stay fashion-forward but also protect yourself from the elements while exploring your destination. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, exploring a city, or hiking in nature, the right hat can enhance your travel look and add a touch of flair to your hairstyle.

Hair bands and accessories are versatile additions to your travel hairstyles, allowing you to create different looks quickly and conveniently. Here’s an additional section on using hair bands and accessories to complement your travel hairstyles:

9. The Hair Band Twist

Hair bands, scrunchies, and other hair accessories can add flair to your travel hairstyles while keeping your hair neatly in place.

  • Start with any of the travel hairstyles mentioned earlier.
  • Half-Up Styles: For half-up half-down or top knot styles, wrap a hair band around the gathered section for a chic twist.
  • Ponytail Styles: Wrap a hair band around the base of your ponytail or bun for a polished finish.
  • Braid Styles: Incorporate a hair band at the end of a braid for a playful touch.
  • You can choose a hair band that matches or contrasts with your outfit for added style.

Hair Band Tips:

  • If you’re in a hurry, a hair band can quickly transform a simple ponytail into a trendy high ponytail or a chic low ponytail.
  • Consider packing a variety of hair bands and accessories in different colors and styles to match various outfits and moods during your trip.
  • Experiment with different hair accessories like headbands, barrettes, or hairpins to add a unique touch to your hairstyles.

Accessories like hair bands and scrunchies are not only practical for keeping your hair in place during travel but also offer a fun way to customize your look. Whether you’re exploring a bustling city or lounging on a beach, these accessories can be the perfect finishing touch to your travel hairstyles, helping you stay stylish and comfortable throughout your journey.

10. Conclusion:

With these seven quick and easy hairstyles in your travel beauty arsenal, you can effortlessly maintain a stylish and put-together look while exploring new destinations. Whether you’re strolling through city streets, relaxing on the beach, or trekking through nature, these hairstyles will keep you feeling confident and ready for your next adventure. 11. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

FAQ 1: How do I choose the best travel hairstyle for my destination? The best travel hairstyle depends on your destination and activities. Consider the climate, type of travel (e.g., city, beach, adventure), and your personal style. Choose a hairstyle that is both practical and stylish for your specific trip.

FAQ 2: Can I create these hairstyles on all hair types and lengths? Most of the mentioned hairstyles work well for various hair types and lengths. However, some styles may require longer hair for better results. Short hair can still be styled with accessories like hair bands or headscarves.

FAQ 3: Are these hairstyles suitable for humid climates? Yes, many of these hairstyles are suitable for humid climates. Styles like buns, ponytails, and braids can help keep your hair in check, and using accessories like hats or hair bands can provide extra protection against humidity.

FAQ 4: How can I make my hairstyle last throughout a long day of travel and exploration? To make your hairstyle last, consider using hair products like hairspray or hairpins to secure it in place. Additionally, carry a travel-sized brush or comb to touch up your hairstyle during the day.

FAQ 5: Can I use these hairstyles for special occasions while traveling? Absolutely! Many of these hairstyles, when accessorized appropriately, can work for special occasions. For a more formal look, you can add elegant hairpins or decorative headbands to your hairstyle.

FAQ 6: Are there any specific tips for maintaining hairstyles during outdoor activities like hiking or swimming? When participating in outdoor activities, it’s a good idea to choose hairstyles that keep your hair off your face and neck. Braids, buns, or ponytails can work well in these situations. Don’t forget to pack hair ties and bobby pins for quick fixes.

FAQ 7: Can I use regular hair bands, or are there special hair bands for travel? You can use regular hair bands, but it’s advisable to choose hair bands made of gentle materials like cloth or silk to prevent hair breakage. There are also specialized travel hair bands designed for durability and comfort.

FAQ 8: Can I use these hairstyles for different climates, such as cold or snowy destinations? Yes, these hairstyles can be adapted for different climates. In colder destinations, you may want to keep your hair covered with a hat or use hairstyles that keep your neck warm, like a low ponytail or bun.

FAQ 9: Are there any specific hairstyles for curly or textured hair? Many of the hairstyles mentioned can be adapted for curly or textured hair. Embrace your natural texture and use accessories like headbands or scarves to add flair to your hairstyle.

FAQ 10: How can I keep my accessories like hats and hair bands clean while traveling? To keep accessories clean, pack them in separate pouches or bags. For hats, choose those with removable or washable sweatbands. For hair bands, consider carrying spare ones and cleaning them as needed with mild soap and water.

FAQs related to using accessories like hats and hair bands with your travel hairstyles:

FAQ 1: How do I choose the right hat style for my travel look? Select a hat style that complements your destination and personal style. Wide-brimmed sun hats are great for beach vacations, while fedoras or baseball caps work well for city adventures. Floppy hats offer a versatile and chic option.

FAQ 2: Are there any special considerations when wearing a hat with a travel hairstyle? When wearing a hat with a travel hairstyle, make sure your hairstyle is secure to prevent it from getting flattened or messed up under the hat. Additionally, consider using hat pins or clips on windy days to keep your hat in place.

FAQ 3: Can I use hair bands and accessories for short hair? Absolutely! Hair bands and accessories work well for short hair too. You can use them to create stylish looks like a half-up twist or add a pop of color with a scrunchie.

FAQ 4: How can I keep my hair bands and accessories organized while traveling? To keep your hair bands and accessories organized, consider using a small pouch or a dedicated section in your toiletry bag. You can also use a pill organizer or a jewelry organizer to keep them separated and easily accessible.

FAQ 5: Are there any specific hairstyles that work best with hair bands and scrunchies? Hair bands and scrunchies can complement various hairstyles, but they work particularly well with ponytails, buns, and half-up styles. You can use them to add a touch of style and hold your hair in place.

FAQ 6: Can I mix and match different hair accessories for a unique look? Absolutely! Mixing and matching hair accessories can create a fun and personalized look. Experiment with different colors, textures, and styles to create a unique combination that suits your travel outfit.

FAQ 7: How can I prevent hair bands from causing breakage or pulling on my hair? To prevent hair breakage, choose hair bands made of gentle, snag-free materials like cloth or silk. Avoid using tight elastic bands that can pull on your hair and cause damage.

FAQ 8: Are there any travel-friendly hair accessories that are easy to pack? Packable hair accessories like foldable hats or soft headbands are ideal for travel. Look for accessories that can be flattened or rolled up to save space in your luggage.

By incorporating hats, hair bands, and other accessories into your travel hairstyles, you can effortlessly elevate your look and add a touch of style to your on-the-go outfits. These accessories not only keep your hair in place but also offer versatility and personalization to your travel style. Enjoy experimenting with different combinations to create the perfect travel look!

5 Travel-Proof Hairstyles for Long Flights

Whether you’re traveling by plane, taxi, or car, chances are the back of your head will rub against the seating, destroying your attempts for stylish locks. The strategy: Aim for styles with secure hold. For instance, curl your hair into loose waves, and then secure smaller sections towards the middle of the back of your head using stackable barrettes. Gather the rest of the hair into a ponytail. Your tresses will stay sleek right through to the end of your journey—plus, this ‘do can work with any occasion of dress upon your arrival.

5 TravelProof Hairstyles for Long Flights

A great solution for early morning travel, this triple topsy tail pony (inspired by the Topsy Tail and it's early-'90s heyday) allows you to twist away the bed head. A good solution for mid- to long-length hair, this option also stays secure all day.

For any length hair, using the right products can be the only necessary step to keeping your hair styled and in place for hours on end. Maintain an effortless, wavy look with a little teasing and a volumizing gel or cream to add texture. Going this route allows a little give and take through a long day of travel—giving you time to focus on more important tasks, like keeping an eye on your passport.

Draw your style all the way around the head with a half-side French-braided crown. Particularly suited for warm-weather travelers who want to keep cool, braids hold up well for a long day on the go, especially when spritzed with a maximum-hold hairspray to keep hair woes at a minimum.

Take the side braid a step further and weave it into a messy ponytail (achieved with a little teasing, wave curls, and texturizing spray), then secure with bobby pins to make sure it doesn’t slip. This option can work for both casual and dressy business attire. Need it formal? Wrap up the pony into a bun once you have reached your destination, without having to re-do any braiding.

Having long (or short) hair when you’re out on the trail can be tricky, especially if you don’t have a great way to style it.

One of the most important things to me regarding my hair when I’m hiking is having it off of my neck and out of my face.

So after years of hiking, I’ve finally figured out a few of my favorite styles that help me keep those flyaways out of my way!

In this post, we’ll go over 17 different hiking hairstyles to give you some ideas on how to style your hair for your next time on the trail.

Best Hiking Hairstyles for Medium and Long Hair

Having medium to long-length hair can be a blessing and a curse when you’re out hiking.

For instance, it makes styling easier, but it also seems to always go wild and end up all over the place…

Below you’ll find 10 different hairstyles that you can put together to wear on a hike if you have medium to long hair.

1. The Simple Ponytail

Ahhh, the classic hairstyle that *almost* everyone can do on their own and pull off!

This one is definitely the most simple of all of the styles on this list and takes the least amount of time to put together.

Most people know how to do them, which is really great considering that some hairstyles take a bit of skill to complete.

trip hairstyles

I personally wear a ponytail for most of my hikes because it’s just so simple and takes me literally 10 seconds to do.

They’re easy, fast, and can be done with most length hair, plus you can spice it up a bit by using scrunchies, fun hairbands, or adding a cute headband.

2. French Braid

This one takes a little more skill, but learning to french braid your own hair is actually pretty simple!

And if you don’t know how to do it, chances are you might know someone that does because it’s a pretty common style!

(Fun fact; my mom doesn’t know how to French braid, so I taught myself how, so now I’m always the one braiding her hair!)

trip hairstyles

I love french braids for days when I’m going to be wearing a hat because my hair sits flat on my head and is still out of my face.

I also love them for days when I know the hike is going to be strenuous because they really keep my hair back.

I’d say that french braids are one of the more “sporty” hairstyles, which is what makes them so perfect for hiking.

And for those who have bangs, they’re an easier way to get your bangs out of your face, especially if you just use a few bobby pins where needed.

I don’t have a ton of experience in hiking hairstyles for curly hair because obviously, mine is pretty darn straight ( ugh ), but this works pretty well for that also!

3. Messy Bun

Another classic and super easy look is the messy bun, which as the name suggests, doesn’t have to be all clean and nice looking.

Simply grab a hair binder and wrap it around your hair in whichever direction it falls.

You can of course use some bobby pins if you want, or use a headband to hold up the pieces that have fallen at the back of your neck.

trip hairstyles

Messy buns are my favorite hairstyle for when it’s really hot outside and I just can’t bear the thought of any hair touching my neck at all.

It’s perfect for getting everything out of your face and helping to keep you cool during those hot summer hikes!

4. Double French Braids

Double French braids are just a spin-off of the classic French braid, which is just one simple braid down the back of your head.

With the double braids, you’ll just split your hair into two sections, right down the middle, and braid each section separately.

trip hairstyles

I personally prefer this over the single braid because I find that I can get the braids tighter and I like having something on both sides of my neck.

Braids are one of the best styles to wear when you’re going to be outside because they really hold their own when it’s windy.

Again, you can pair these braids with a hat or headband if needed!

5. Bubble Braids

Here’s another fun one for those with medium or long-length hair, that looks similar to a braid but is much easier to actually do!

Simply secure your hair into a high ponytail, and then tie small elastics around your hair, every 1-2 inches.

Then lightly tug on the small sections to help fluff them up a bit.

It’s a really simple and easy style but adds a bit more spice to just a classic ponytail.

You can also create this hairstyle in a way that looks a bit more similar to a French braid, which you can find tutorials for online such as this one.

6. Low Messy Bun

I wear a lot of low messy buns when I’m out on the trail because they are so simple to put together and really require no effort at all.

There are sometimes when I think that it’ll be okay to leave my hair down when I’m hiking… and then I’m sadly mistaken.

trip hairstyles

So I need a quick way to get it off of my neck, and that’s when I pull out the low messy bun.

Just gather your hair as if you were going to put it into a low ponytail, and then wrap the hair binder around it as if you were making a normal messy bun.

I tend to pull out a few small pieces around my face and loosen the strands a little bit to make it more comfortable!

But, this one can definitely get a bit annoying if it’s hot outside because it’ll be on your neck.

Winter hiking can be tough because you need to wear a hat to keep yourself warm, but you also need to get your hair out of the way.

This I why I’ve made this list so that most of them are able to be paired with a simple beanie!

trip hairstyles

French braids, dutch braids, low messy buns, bubble braids, and even a ponytail can all be paired with a beanie or hat!

You can also of course where one with your hair just down, but I personally don’t love that because it tends to get really messy and knotted.

There are tons of different types of hats to choose from including merino wool, waterproof, lightweight, etc.

I also love that there are hats like this one that have holes in them to put your ponytail through, which is just genius!

8. Braided Messy Bun

If you want a nice easy hiking hairstyle that is a bit cuter than some of the other options on this list, try out a braided messy bun.

There are a few different ways that you could do this, depending on how intricate you want to get with it.

The first option is to start as if you were doing a classic French braid and only go to about the crown of your head before tieing it off with an elastic.

And then just secure your hair up into a messy bun and use bobby pins as needed.

The other option is to create a deep side part and braid it across the front of your head before securing the rest of your hair in the same way.

These both will take a little bit more time, but they’re super cute and are a bit more stylish if that’s what you’re hoping for!

9. Dutch Braid

A Dutch braid is similar to a French braid, but is basically inversed which creates a totally different look!

You’ll start the process in the same way that you would with a French braid, but instead of braiding over, you’re going to braid under.

There are many videos online that can help you learn this, such as this one , because if I’m being honest, I’m not the best at Dutch braiding!

But when I can figure them out, I love them for the same reasons as a French braid, they keep all of the hair out of my face and it flat to my head.

10. Bubble Pig Tails

Bubble pigtails are similar to the bubble braids that we talked about above, but these are just in pigtail form instead!

The best way to achieve this look is by separating your hair into two large sections and securing them with a ponytail, on each side of your neck.

Then take a small, rubber elastic and tie that around your pigtail, about 1-2 inches down from the first binder.

Continue until you’ve reached the bottom and tug on the small sections just enough to kind of fluff them up.

Best Hiking Hairstyles for Short Hair

I totally know the pain of looking up fun styles to do for your hair and only being able to find ones that work for hair that’s down to your butt…

When I had short hair, I really struggled with this, which is why I wanted to give you a list of some of my favorite sporty styles for shorter hair.

11. Half-Up Messy Bun

Depending on the length of your hair, it may be difficult to pull it all up into a messy bun without hairs in the back falling out.

Which is why I spent months wearing a super simple half-up messy bun for literally every activity in my life.

trip hairstyles

Even for hiking, when I couldn’t even get my hair in a ponytail, I went ahead and did this super simple style!

Simply grab half of your hair and wrap a hair binder around it multiple times until you’ve created a small messy bun at the back of your head.

You can pull some strands out to make it look the way you want, but this is really nice to keep the hair away from your face.

12. Low Ponytail

If you’re already out on the trail and need a super easy way to get your hair away from you right now , try a simple low ponytail.

It’s as easy as it sounds.

trip hairstyles

Just grab your hair and tie it with a hair elastic at the base of your neck.

This one will seriously take you like 5 seconds and you’ll be good to hit the trail!

13. Baseball Cap

One of my favorite parts about most of the styles on this list is that they can be worn with a baseball hat!

French braids, Dutch braids, ponytails, low buns, many of them can be worn simply under a cap to help keep the sun out of your eyes.

trip hairstyles

Or, just wear one instead of doing anything to your hair, because that can be just as great too!

I personally prefer a visor to a hat because my head gets way too sweaty and itchy, but whatever suits you, go with it!

14. Half-Up French Braids

Another beautiful hairstyle for short hair that is really simple and will keep your hair out of your face is a half-up French braid-do.

To achieve this style, simply create a middle part and then take a very small section of hair from one side on the top of your head and begin French braiding it.

Be sure not to pick up too much of the sides, because you want half of your hair to stay down.

Do the same thing on the other side, and secure both pieces at the back of your head, near the top.

This is a really simple style that, in my opinion, is super cute and still serves as a great athletic hairdo for hiking.

15. Reverse French Braid

This one might be a bit tricky, but it works decently for short hair because it braids from the bottom up!

Start by flipping your hair over your head and combing it out with your fingers.

You’re going to be braiding the hair underneath for this one!

Then grab a small section of hair and start French braiding it just as you would if it were the top of your head.

Continue braiding it until it’s almost to the top, and then either tie your hair into a ponytail or a messy bun!

For more details, check out this video that explains how to do it!

16. Headband

Wearing a headband is a really simple way to keep your hair out of your face, without having to put a whole ton of work into it.

You can wear a headband in many different ways, which is what makes it such a great choice for wearing on the trail.

trip hairstyles

Whether you choose to just wear one with your hair down, in a ponytail, in a messy bun, or in a braid, it’s a great choice.

Plus, if you’re hiking in the winter, it can help keep your ears warm! Win-win!

17. Basic Three Strand Braid

Last but certainly not least, one that everyone knows, is the classic three-strand braid.

If your hair is really short, you may struggle a bit to get this one down, because you will require just a little bit of length to braid.

But this is just the basic braid that you can find tutorials for everywhere!

trip hairstyles

Section your hair into three chunks, and begin crossing them over each other until you’ve reached the bottom of your hair.

Secure it with a hair binder and pair it with any sort of hat or headband to add a little bit of spice to it.

It really can’t get much easier than that!

Tips for Styling Hair While Hiking

If you’re just heading out for a day hike, it isn’t as necessary to do a lot of haircare, but if you’re backpacking, you’re going to want to pay a little more attention.

Here are a few tips for keeping that wild hair under control when you’re on the hiking trail.

  • Comb it out before styling or every day when you’re backpacking
  • Keep it back and out of your face to make your hike more enjoyable.
  • Your hair can get tangled easily out in nature, but try not to rip through it with a brush when you’re done because it can get damaged easily.
  • Use headbands or a hat to cover your hair to keep it from getting too tangled.
  • Use hairstyles that you’re comfortable in to ensure you don’t get stuck out on the trail with something that you don’t like.
  • If you have bangs , consider trying a hairstyle like a French braid that you can tuck them back in, or bring a comb for them.

Best Hair Products for Hiking

When I’m getting ready for a hike, I like to use as few products and accessories in my hair as possible to make it easy on myself.

But there are definitely a few things that I use that I need for almost every single style that I do, which you’ll find below!

How Should I Wear My Hair for Hiking?

You can wear your hair however you want for hiking, but I recommend wearing it up so that it’s out of your way. Some of the best ways to wear it are in a ponytail, braid, or a messy bun.

How Do You Hike With Short Hair?

If you have short hair, consider trying half-up half-down hairstyles such as a half-up messy bun or half-up french braids. This works nice for short hair and will keep the hair out of your face. Or if you’d like your hair up, try a reverse french braid.

What Do You Do With Your Hair When Backpacking?

When you’re out backpacking, you’re going to want to keep your hair protected and back so that it doesn’t get too messy. Personally, I think that the best way to do this is by putting it in a braid because it prevents it from getting all knotted. I also recommend using headbands or hats to help keep your hair under control.

How Can I Wear My Hair When It’s Windy Outside?

When it’s windy, the best way to wear your hair is up and out of your face. I don’t like wearing it down or in ponytails when it’s windy because it gets really snarly. But with braids, I don’t typically see that same mess, so that’s what I always opt for!

Conclusion: Hiking Hairstyles

When you’re looking to head out on the hiking trail, sometimes it can be a real pain in the butt to figure out what to do with your hair.

In this post, I shared 17 different hiking hairstyles that will help you easily style your locks.

Whether you have short, medium, or long hair, there’s some sort of style that will work great for you.

The Top Knot – A twist on an old classic.

  • STEP 1: Brush and gather your hair into a tight ponytail on the very top of your head and affix with an elastic band.
  • STEP 2: If you have it, spritz your ponytail with sea salt or styling spray, and then backcomb the ponytail with your fingers.
  • STEP 3: Separate the ponytail into two parts, one part in each hand, and then bring the two parts forward, on each side of your head.
  • STEP 4: Cross over the two parts and continue wrapping around until you reach the end of your hair.
  • STEP 5: Secure the ends into the bun with bobby pins, and add a bit of texture by breaking up the bun with your fingers.

The Springtime Tuck – A pretty vacation hairstyle that looks tricker than it actually is.

  • STEP 1: Take a colored headband and place it around the crown of your head, with your hair underneath, not over the top.
  • STEP 2: Hold the headband in place and tuck the lengths back over the top of the headband, until all the hair is tucked in, starting from the sides of your head under your ear.
  • STEP 3: Secure with bobby pins if you need, style the strands at the front and voila! Easy and feminine vacation hairstyles!

The Dutch Braid – Reverse your usual french braid for an eye-catching look.

If you’re a French Braid pro, you’ll pick this up in no time. The key is to weave the left and right strands under the middle strand rather than over .

  • STEP 1 : Take a section of hair from the crown of your head and divide into three strands.
  • STEP 2: Cross the right hand strand under the middle strand so it now becomes the middle strand.
  • STEP 3: Cross the left hand strand under the middle strand, so it now becomes the middle strand.
  • STEP 4: Gather a section of hair from the right side of your head and add to the strand which is on the right side.
  • STEP 5: Cross the right hand strand under the middle strand.
  • STEP 6: Gather a section of hair from the left side of your head and add to the strand which is on the left side.
  • STEP 7 : Cross the left hand strand under the middle strand.
  • STEP 8: Repeat until you reach the base of your scalp, and continue to plait to the end of your hair.
  • STEP 9: Tie off the end.

12 Hiking Hairstyles that are Pretty & Practical

12 Pretty & Practical Hiking Hairstyles: Echo Canyon in Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona

12 Pretty & Practical Hiking Hairstyles: Echo Canyon in Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona

This is a guest post from one of my hiking companions.  She’s young, slightly dramatic, and loves pretty things, even in the middle of the wilderness.  You can find her top hiking destinations here .

If you have long hair, like me, you’ve simply got to find a way to keep it out of the way and under control when you’re hiking.  Long hair that’s falling into your eyes, sticking to the back of your neck because you’re sweaty, etc. just isn’t practical and it certainly won’t enhance your hiking experience.  So I’ve compiled a list of my 12 favorite hiking hairstyles for medium to long hair.

Click on the images to make them larger.

Simple Ponytail - 12 Pretty & Practical Hiking Hairstyles

Simple Ponytail

1. Ponytail

trip hairstyles

A personal favorite, ponytails keep the hair mainly contained while actually being fairly comfortable for sleeping on (or you can always take them out for sleeping).  However they do have two cons – they have a tendency to get a little messy when exposed to high winds, and they also will rest on your pack because the hair won’t have anywhere to go.  Directions below.

First, comb all your hair back.

Simple braid - 12 hiking hairstyles that are pretty & practical

Simple braid

2. Simple Braid

trip hairstyles

This is a favorite hiking hairstyle.  It both contains the hair and makes it easy to brush when you’re done with your hike.  Braids stand up fairly well to wind.  The one thing that’s not so nice about a single braid is that if you’re carrying a backpack, it doesn’t have anywhere to rest.  Braids are also not so comfortable for sleeping on, though Anne does it all the time.  Directions here .

Two braids is a very practical hiking hairstyle

3. Two braids.

This one is a favorite of West Coast hikers.  It is very comfortable for hiking, even with a large backpack because they hang down over your shoulders.  One of my group members wears this all the time when hiking, though she complains that it lets her neck get sunburned.  This hairstyle will stand up to wind and is also fairly comfortable to sleep on.  Directions below:

With a comb, part the hair into two sections and put each section over a shoulder.

Now braid like a regular braid .  It should look like this:

Cornrow Braids

4. Lots of braids / cornrows

This is time-consuming when you first do them up, but they’ll keep even hair that is very fine looking fairly good for days.  Each day, you can take one or two braids down and re-braid it.  After a few days, you’ll have completely redone your hair!  This will stand up to high winds well.  If you pull them all to the side, it’s not too bad for sleeping on either.  Directions here .

French Braid

French Braid

5. French braid

Like a simple braid, a French braid will stand up to high winds and is uncomfortable to sleep on (in my opinion – Anne doesn’t seem to mind).  But it has the added benefit of keeping the hair on top of your head contained.  One major problem is that it takes a long time to put it up.  However, that will probably be diminished for the way it looks even after a long day of hiking!  Directions here .

You can also do two French braids like this .

French Twist with Ponytail - 12 hiking hairstyles that are pretty and practical

French Twist with Ponytail

6. French Twist with ponytail

If you’re wearing a hat, this hairstyle isn’t quite as comfortable.  However, I find that it keeps my hair nicely contained.  It stands up to the wind fairly well.  The one real problem is that you have to have a clip on-hand.  Directions below.

First, smooth all the hair back…

Hair Elastic Twist Up - 12 Hiking Hairstyles that are Pretty & Practical

Hair Elastic Twist Up

7. Hair elastic twist-up

This is my own creation.  I made it up because I was tired of having to use dozens of bobby pins in my hair and then having it fall down anyway.  I find that having something like a hair elastic helps my hair stay in place.  So I created this hairstyle as a perfect solution to my hair dilemma.  I wear it most of the time when I’m hiking.  Directions below.

First, smooth back your hair into a ponytail (see above, but don’t put the hair elastic in)

Simple Bun

8. Simple Bun

trip hairstyles

Easy, hair containing hiking hairstyle.  A con is that it will not stand up to high winds.  There have been times that I can remember taking down my hair because the bun was so blown apart.  A pro for this hairstyle is that it keeps your hair from resting on your pack.  However, it is also terribly uncomfortable for sleeping.  Directions here .

Braided Bun - 12 Pretty & Practical Hiking Hairstyles

Braided Bun

9. Braided Bun

Anne, the creator of this blog, wears these all the time when hiking!  It’s very practical and will stand up to high winds very well.  She sleeps with this bun in her hair too…I don’t think that sounds very comfortable, but she does it and says it’s like an extra pillow.  Directions below.

First, braid your hair in one braid and secure it at the bottom and top (see how to make a braid, above).

To make a Braided Bun, start with a simple braid - 12 Pretty & Practical Hiking Hairstyles

Hairband Hairstyle

10. Headband

trip hairstyles

Headband hairstyles are great for keeping your hair in place.  You can do a lot of hairstyles with headbands, including, but not limited to: braids, ponytails, and hair elastic twist-up.  In short, any of the hairstyles that I mentioned here you can probably do with a headband.  A few examples can be found here .

Kerchief Hairstyle

Kerchief Hairstyle

11. Kerchief

Like the headband, kerchiefs can be used for a lot of hairstyles.  They had the added benefit that they will keep more of the hair out of the wind.  This video shows how to do 10 different hairstyles.

Placing bobby pins along the top of the hair keeps it from flying away in windy environments - 12 Pretty & Practical Hiking Hairstyles

Placing bobby pins along the top of the hair keeps it from flying away in windy environments

12. Pretty Bobbie Pins

trip hairstyles

This is simple and is good for keep the hair near the roots from flying, which is great in high winds.  All you need is a lot of bobby pins and some nail polish in complementing colors.  We used light pink, light blue, purple, and yellow.  (All right, so we really used the colors that we don’t wear on our nails because we don’t like the colors…)  Directions below.

So the first thing you’ll need is a few different colors of nail polish and some bobby pins.  I recommend clipping them to the edge of a piece of cardboard, not touching – this will make them easier to handle and to dry.  Take the bobby pins and paint the tops of them with the polish.  This is pretty easy and can be done in a matter of a few minutes.  Lighter colors may need more than one coat, but darker colors will probably be fine.

Slide the bobby pins in near the roots - 12 Hiking Hairstyles that are Pretty & Practical

Slide the bobby pins in near the roots

Once you’ve painted the pins, slip them into your hair, right up near the roots.  I like to put them in right along the hairline and along my part.  Note the wear and tear – i.e., not much – these have been across the country several times, worn 24/7 (yes, even for sleeping) for many weeks in a row, and they still look better than with their original paint!

Bonus tips for dealing with hair while hiking:

Bonus tip #1.

If you have bangs, you probably will want to make sure you have a fine-tooth comb somewhere in your pack.  It’s hard to keep bangs looking good while you’re out on the trail.  You could also pin them back so they’re not falling into your eyes.  Also, if you’re heading out on a long trip, make sure you trim them first.  Even if they’re not too long before you leave, after a couple of weeks, they probably will be.

Bonus tip #2

Brush your hair daily.  It may take you some time, but brushing the hair will keep it looking better and will also distribute oils from your skin to the drier bottoms of the hair, which will help keep it healthy even if you can’t wash it very often.

Bonus tip #3

As you probably noticed in the tutorials, we tend to go “ au naturel ” in hair on the trail – no hairspray, hair gel, etc.  You’re welcome to try that if it might help keep your hair under control, especially in windy environments.

Bonus tip #4

If you are really into the pretty, bring along some funky scrunchies, hair elastics, clips, bobby pins, or headbands to dress yourself up – I find hiking more fun when I know my hair is pretty as well as functional!

What hairstyles do you wear on the trail?  I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
