All day adventure with many unbelievably memorable stops along the way. Snorkelling Thunderball Grotto was the highlight of my day. My husband loved swimming with the nurse sharks. Our travelling friends loved the swimming pigs and iguanas. The hospitality and professionalism of Captain Robert, Captain William, and Atwique (sp?) made the day worry free and relaxing. The boat was a surprisingly smooth ride on a windy day (18 mph wind).

If you do one thing while in Exuma, book a trip with Robert!! We had an absolutely perfect day on the full day tour of the cays! Beer and rum punch provided, stops at pig beach, iguana island, thunderball grotto, swimming with sharks, the sandbar, a stop for lunch, and several other stops along the way where the crew will point out celebrity’s homes and private islands. A taxi provided by Roberts staff picked us up outside of Sandals resort and then drove us back at the end of the day. Amazing day!!

It was a one of a kind trip! A memorable one! We went to the iguanas fed them, then over to the pigs which was super cool then onto the nurse sharks in compass cay. After that we went we stopped for lunch which was a buffet with a beautiful view. We also saw Pablo Escobar’s sunken plane although the tide was high so couldn’t see much, we also saw turtles, stopped at a sandbank where i found 2 sandollars and lastly snorkled at the mermaid piano which was great. It was just the perfect day thankyou!!🥰🥰💗

We had the time of our life at the tour. Perfect way to se the swimming pigs. Also we enjoyed swimming with small sharks, seing iguanas, diving into the James Bond Thunderball Grotto. We saw turtles, stingrays, the Sandbar and had a great bahimian lunch. We caught a little caribian shower on the way back in the boat but that was just a nice experience. All the best recommendations to the staf and this great tour. Cheers from Denmark 🇩🇰🇧🇸🏝☀️👍🏻

Two points to make. 1) When inquiring, booking and confirming, the correspondence was professional and timely. Keep in mind, it's not easy to respond to emails from the middle of the ocean. I even did two trips (full day swim w/ pigs, etc. and half day fishing charter). 2) The captains and their mates were polite, entertaining, generous, etc. I highly recommend Robert's.

Me and my girlfriend decided to go on a full day excursion and chose Roberts Island Adventures. The experience was an unforgettable one ! 10/10, William and Yellow made the experience worth while, being very informative about the tour and making it fun with beers and gombay smash ! Would highly recommend these guys, won’t regret it.

THE CAYS TO EXUMA

Exuma's premier private tour boat company, who we are and what we do.

You might be wondering, what is a Cay?  Pronounced "key", they are small low lying islands or banks made up of coral, rock and/or sand.  Consisting of 365 cays in Exuma alone, you could stop at one each day of the year and see something different every day.  The Cays to Exuma was named as a play on words so tourists can see and experience everything the beautiful Bahamian archipelago has to offer.  We want to steal the keys to your heart so you'll come back year after year for a memorable vacation.

Everyone has different approaches and priorities when it comes to vacation.  The team members at The Cays to Exuma are dedicated to providing you the best possible and memorable experience when on tour with us.  We have many years of experience on the water and want to show you all that Exuma has to offer.  You'll have the opportunity to feed the swimming pigs, walk on a massive sandbar, swim with turtles and more!  The choice is up to you as we offer various tours that can accommodate anyone. A favorite is the harbour tour where you'll be able to swim with sea turtles, snorkel at starfish beach, walk on a massive sandbar, pet stingrays, snorkel a coral reef and bluehole, and float down the lazy river with a cold drink in hand. Definitely a tour not to miss while in Great Exuma!

Unlike other tour companies, WE DON'T OVERCROWD and we take a maximum of 10-12 guests.  Our goal is to provide a personal unique experience and not a large group environment.  We offer complimentary Bahamian beer, rum punch, bottled water and soft drinks.  You are also more than welcome to bring your own beverages and snacks on the boat.

Due to insurance regulations, we do not provide life jackets to children under 50lbs and/or 8 yrs of age. You must provide your own properly fitted PFD for every child on board.

The Best Things To Do On Great Exuma Island

Go on the famous swimming pig s tour.

Chances are if you’ve ever seen pictures of happy pigs swimming in bright blue waters, you’re looking at an image of the famous Great Exuma Island Pigs.

No one really knows how they got to the islands but rumour has it that they were left here by sailors who had planned to cook them.

Fortunately for the piggies, the sailors left for an adventure and never made it back, meaning that they were saved from the dinner plate and subsequently became one of The Bahamas’ biggest celebrities.

Visiting the swimming pigs is the most highly rated activity on Great Exuma Island. You can book a half-day swimming pigs and rock iguanas tour with Exuma Water Sports for $190, which includes the following:

  • Visit to the famous swimming pigs of White Bay Cay
  • Wild Stingrays
  • Bahamian Rock Iguanas of Allen Cay
  • Swimming in Blow hole
  • Reef snorkelling
  • Deserted island hopping and scenic beaches

D on’t miss out on this trip, it was one of my favourite things to do on Great Exuma .

Swimming Pigs Tour , Things to do on Great Exuma Island

Swim with Nurse Sharks at Compass Cay

Whilst the suggestion to go swimming with sharks might sound extremely mad, this is actually another one of the most popular activities to do near Great Exuma Island.

The sharks are well-fed and are used to visitors, so you can expect an extremely pleasant experience swimming amongst these beautiful marine creatures.

You can get to Compass Cay by booking on the full-day swimming pigs tour with Exuma Water Sports for $375

Visit Pablo Escobar’s Sunken Plane

Pablo Escobar’s sunken plane can be found off the coast of Norman’s Cay.

Norman’s Cay was one of the centres of Escobar’s drug-smuggling ring in the 70’s and 80’s. Before heading on to the USA, planes full of “cargo” from Colombia would land at Norman’s Cay to refuel.

The plane crash occurred in 1980 when the plane landed well short of the runway. Thankfully no one was injured and passengers even managed to save some of their “cargo” and swim it back to shore.

You can visit the plane by booking on the full-day swimming pigs tour with Staniel Cay Adventures  starting at $279

NOTE: If you wish to see the swimming pigs, swim with Nurse Sharks AND visit Pablo Escobar’s plane in one excursion, you should book your trip with Staniel Cay Adventures . This trip also includes a stop off at the famous Thunderball Grotto from the James Bond film

Exuma Cays, Great Exuma Island

Jolly Hall Beach

Jolly Hall is a small but impressive beach located just over 2km from the capital of Georgetown.

This was the first beach I visited on my trip to Great Exuma Island and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I realised I had the place all to myself!

So if you are after a slice of paradise that you don’t have to share with anyone else, then I would highly recommend a trip to Jolly Hall.  There are no beach bars directly on the beach, but if you do find yourself feeling hungry or thirsty (or in need of the loo) then you can visit Hideaways at Palm Bay which is only a 5-7 minute walk away.

Jolly Hall Beach, Great Exuma Island

Try Some Bahamian delicac ies at Shirley’s Fish Fry

Just a stone’s throw from Jolly Hall, you will find Shirley’s Fish Fry, one of the most popular restaurants on Great Exuma Island. Not just for tourists, but locals too.

The interiors are basic but the food cooked with fresh and local ingredients very much makes up for that. Make sure to try the local Bahamian delicacy that is Conch.

Looking for more Caribbean holiday inspo? Check out my other guides here .

Hoopers Bay

One of the best things do to on Great Exuma is to visit to Hoopers Bay. A trip here will see you living out your ultimate Finding Nemo dreams.

Here you will be able to meet the friendliest sea turtles in the world, who are not afraid to come up and say hello at the shoreline.

The turtles are out in their abundance so your chances of encountering these beautiful creatures are extremely high.

Of course, I shouldn’t forget to mention that the beach itself is absolutely stunning (like most of the beaches on Great Exuma) and is ranked the 5th best beach on the island.

Please DO NOT feed or touch the turtles.

Hoopers Bay, Great Exuma Island

Take a trip to Chat’N’Chill

Spend your Sunday dancing, eating and drinking at Chat’N’Chill on Great Stocking Island. Whilst Chat’N’chill is open 7 days a week, Sunday is the day for their famous Pig Roast and BBQ.

Tourists and locals alike head here to snap up a huge plate of food for just $22. Not only is the food great, but the music and cocktails are an added bonus too.

The atmosphere here is incredible, and it’s hard to leave Chat’N’Chill without a smile on your face. Chat’N’Chill was one of my favourite days and up there with one of my favourite things to do on Great Exuma.

To get to Great Stocking Island you can catch the 5-minute water taxi from Government Dock in Georgetown. A return journey will set you back roughly $10-15. The water taxis are regular and reliable.

NOTE: you will need to pay for the water taxi in cash, but can use the card once you are on the island

Chat and Chill, Exuma

Tropic of Cancer Beach

Named after the latitude that passes directly through it, Tropic of Cancer beach will truly give you that “Wow, I can’t believe I am in The Bahamas” feeling.

Tropic of Cancer Beach is actually on Little Exuma Island but is easily accessible by car from Great Exuma.

Tropic of Cancer is the longest beach on the Islands and in my opinion the most beautiful.

On entrance to the beach you will find a cute beach bar serving up a small BBQ menu and delicious cocktails (make sure to try the Pina Colada).

If there is only one beach you visit on Great Exuma Island, let Tropic of Cancer be it. This is one of the best things to do on Great Exuma.

Tropic of Cancer Beach Great Exuma Island

Go for a dive in Anglefish Blue Hole

Located just off the coast of Stocking Island, the impressive Anglefish blue hole. Deans’s Blue Hole is a stunning underwater cave that is 92 feet deep, making it the perfect scuba diving spot.

You can book a diving trip with Dive Exuma , which you can find located in Georgetown by Government Dock.

Have a bite to eat at Santana’s Bar and Grill

Just a short 5-minute drive from Tropic of Cancer Beach you will find Santana’s beach bar.

The food here is mouth-wateringly good (I recommend the jerk chicken) and the scenery from the bar is unparalleled. It is the perfect place to come for a meal with a view.

And, if you’re lucky you might even be able to spot some fishy friends in the sea whilst you’re enjoying your food (we got to see a shark!).

Santana's bar and grill, Great Exuma Island

George Town

The Capital of Great Exuma Island is small, but it’s worth walking around. If, like me, you love quaint and colourful buildings, you’ll enjoy your time here.

It’s also where you will find one of the only ATMs on the island.

When I asked a local what his favourite beach on the island was, Tar Bay was the answer. When I asked why, he mentioned how peaceful it was.

Much Like Tropic of Cancer, Tar Bay is a very long stretch of bright white sand and clear blue sea.

Tar Bay, however, isn’t as popular as beaches like Hoopers Bay and Tropic of Cancer, so there is a good chance you’ll be able to stretch this beach all to yourself (saying that, you’ll probably find that most of the Exuma beaches you visit feel empty in comparison to the more popular Bahamian islands).

Jolly Hall Beach, Great Exuma Island

Additional Info

Getting there.

You will be able to fly directly to Great Exuma Island from Miami, Charlotte, Ft Lauderdale, Atlanta and Toronto.

If you are flying in from alternative destinations, you will have to fly into the main airport Nassau on New Providence Island and catch a connecting flight to Great Exuma from there.

Getting Around

Transportation on the island is quite limited. There are no public buses and only a few taxi services (which can be quite expensive) so the best option is to rent a car .

The most reputable company is Exuma Car Rentals which can be found just outside the airport.

Car rental prices start from $75 per day (excluding insurance).

NOTE: The Bahamas drive on the left-hand side of the road (like the UK), however, the cars are imported from America (steering wheel on the left of the car), so make sure you take extra care when looking out for your rearview mirrors.

Not able to rent a car? Here are the list of taxi services you can use on the island:

  • Ballsound’s Taxi Service 1-242-524-0832
  • Out Junior Taxi Service 1-242-336-2509
  • Luther Rolle Taxi Service 1-242-345-5003
  • Leslie Dames Taxi Service 1-242-357-0015 (I can personally vouch for Leslie as a reliable driver)

Remember, If you are staying at a resort, you will be able to organise transportation at your reception desk.

Exuma Cays, Great Exuma Island

Where to stay

Generally speaking, accommodation on the island is not cheap (let’s face it, Great Exuma Island is not cheap full stop).

However, if you want to keep costs down you may be able to find some very basic accommodation starting from £100 in the capital of Georgetown.

On the whole, you will find that the majority of accommodation prices will start from upwards of £200 per night. You can explore the full list of Hotels and Airbnbs available on Great Exuma Island below:

  • Hotels
  • AirBnbs

Happy Exploring

I hope you have a wonderful time exploring all that Great Exuma Island has to offer. If you have any more questions about anything discussed in this blog post, please feel free to reach out!

Does "open seat" simply mean a larger boat with more people?

Open seat means you book per seat in a group tour, it can be a medium sized boat (28ft) or larger boat (38ft+), it all depends on how busy we are on the day you book. We usually know at the last minute because many guests wait until the day before to book. We encourage you to book early and to be flexible in case we have to reschedule the tour due to bad weather or for other operational reasons.

Does the boat have overhead protection, or partial protection, from the sun?

Yes, partial, we recommend bringing long sleeve shirts or rashguards, hats and plenty of sunscreen for extra protection.

What is the order of the stops?

The order depends on the tides and weather conditions, but usually it's as shown here .

Does the tour include sunken underwater plane?

The underwater plane (plane wreck) is on our itinerary, but it's not guaranteed, it is located in an area with a lot of currents and if the tide is not right, we won't be able to stop to see it for safety reasons.

I can't swim, can I do the tour? Do you provide life jackets?

Yes of course, we provide life jackets of all sizes (from age 2) except for infants, feel free to bring a lifejacket for your baby.

Can I pay with card or travelers cheques? What currencies do you accept?

You can only pay with Mastercard or Visa, additional 5% convenience fee applies to cover the cost of card transactions. We don't accept Travelers Cheques. We only accept cash in US dollars and Bahamian Dollars.

What's the cancelation policy?

Please check our Terms & Conditions page for details.

Where do you start the tour?

Barraterre dock , Exuma. Full itineraries here

Can I book my flight through you?

No, you are responsible for booking your flight directly and also have to arrange transfer to and from airport (in Nassau). Check BahamasAir.com   and WesternAirBahamas.com for flights. We provide roundtrip airport transfers on the island of Exuma

Are there any additional charges?  Is there a stop for lunch?

Landing fee at Compass Cay (Nurse Sharks Stop) is $15 per person (cash only), to be paid directly to the island's staff, it is not mandatory, but if you chose not to pay it, you won't be able to enter the island and you will miss swimming with the nurse sharks, as you will have to wait for the others on the boat.

Yes we stop at Black Point for lunch, there is an extra cost, it's a Bahamian buffet (About $30 per person), look up Deshamon Restaurant .

Full  itineraries here

Are Snacks provided?

Fresh conch salad is prepared and served on the tours, you can also bring along your choice of snacks.

I'm not staying in Exuma, can you help me organize a tour?

Absolutely, click here to check availability and give us more details

How long do we stay at each stop/attraction?

Minimum 15 minutes but usually around 20 to 30 minutes. The length depends on multiple factors such as how crowded it is when we're there, tides, weather etc...

Typically, when does the "open seat" package sell out?

It depends on the season, but in general, easter, Christmas & new year holidays are the ones that sell out the quickest.

What if weather is bad on booking day? Are we allowed to change the day?

Bad weather for us is wind speeds of more than 17 knots and/or heavy rain. Light rain or drizzle that is localized and limited in time doesn't stop us from going out, because we will be traveling through the Exuma cays and are able to pick our stops based on weather conditions. In case of bad weather, we will let you know a day or two before and we will move your booking to the next day, in case you can't join, we cancel your booking without charging any fees. We constantly monitor data from  Staniel Cay Weather Station for weather forecast.

Why is the price without VAT tax? In Europe, we always get the price including taxes.

That's how it is in The Bahamas and most of north America. It's a common practice even at grocery store, price on the shelve is always excluding taxes which are added later at the checkout before the payment.

What is your cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy is explained in details on our terms and conditions page

Is it okay if I’m pregnant

If you're less than 4 months pregnant, it is fine

Is there a bathroom on board?

No, but we make bathroom stops at one of the island whenever needed.

Is there a place to park our vehicle at Barraterre dock?

Yes there is plenty of free parking space nearby and it's very safe.

Can I book by calling?

No, we only take bookings on our website, here's the booking page .

Best boat rental place on exuma.

Coastline Adventures is a great company to go on tours through the Exuma they have group or private options and have the best captains! They go through all the most amazing spots like 007 cave, the sand bar, Stanley cay, swimming with the pigs, swim with the nurse shakes and more! I prefer coastline over any resort options! I have used coastline multiple times now while on vacation, so if your want to do the best tour in the exuma’s go with Coastline Adventures!

Amazing Time

My husband and I were celebrating our 1 year Anniversary and we did the excursion with coastline! It was such an amazing time! The pick from our location was prompt and driver was so friendly. When we arrived at the location, the service was friendly and efficient. Once the tour started I could tell it would be a great day, the crew interacted with the guests and made us feel like family. The tour gave us the history and current information of all cays as we passed them. My favorite part of the trip was swimming with the sharks. Overall, the trip was safe , fun, informative and amazing! I would definitely recommend this tour! We loved it!!

Experience of a Lifetime

We did the full day tour with coastline after our excursion was cancelled at the last minute by another company. It was our last day in the island so we were so thankful to them that they took us at the very last second. We had the best time ever! We saw so many things from starfishes, to the most beautiful sandbars, Thunderball Grotto, the famous swimming pigs, Iguana island, sea turtles, and more! Neo and Xavien were awesome and really did a great job at making us feel welcome and giving us some fantastic experiences. Thank you for an awesome day and memories that will last a lifetime!

Fantastic Experience, Friendly Service

Had a great time on the full-day tour. Crew is friendly and organized. Music and included drinks (water, soft drinks, beer and tropical mixed) and speeding over turquoise water definitely hits a vibe. The dock check-in crew is also very friendly and well-organized. The crew strikes a great balance, maintaining a fun vacation vibe while navigating a ton of distance over the water, accommodating tides (Thunderball Grotto is far away and only accessible at low tide), currents and the necessity of getting people back to Georgetown for day’s-end flights.

This Gorgeous Island Destination in the Bahamas Has Secret Coves, Underwater Caves, and More Than 300 Days of Sunshine Per Year

Here's how to plan the perfect trip to the Exumas, including where to stay, what to do, and when to visit.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Spread across 500 miles of the Atlantic Ocean, the Bahamas is a sun-splashed archipelago that’s renowned for its white-sand beaches, sapphire waters, and vibrant local culture. A tropical escape that’s easy to access thanks to direct flights from many U.S. hubs, it’s popular with all sorts of travelers — from families with young kids to couples keen to rev up the romance.

While most vacationers plop down in Nassau, the gateway to the largest international airport, or drive across the bridge to Paradise Island — where you’ll find the legendary ocean-themed Atlantis Paradise Island resort — travelers familiar with the island chain know there’s more to discover beyond the big-name destinations.

Not as tourist-trodden as the aforementioned hot spots, but more well-known than Eleuthera and Andros , the Exumas earns its shine as a relaxing vacation destination with nature-forward highlights. Most people go for the world-famous Tropic of Cancer Beach or Pig Beach. Spread across the 365 islands and cays are also many off-the-beaten-path treasures such as secret coves, underwater caves, and near-empty snorkeling spots.

To help you plan the perfect trip to the Exumas, we tapped local experts for their picks for the best hotels, activities, restaurants, and insider tips.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Catch some rays on the sandy beaches.
  • Swim with cute pigs at the aptly named Pig Beach.
  • Eat freshly caught seafood.
  • Arrange a boat trip to explore the lesser-known cays.
  • Stay in an oceanfront room at Paradise Bay resort.

Kip Dawkins/Fowl Cay Resort

Paradise Bay

More than just a place to snooze (though it does have charming, no-fuss cottages), Paradise Bay is all about getting guests outside and into nature. Stays include ample on-property activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling, as well as off-site excursions, ranging from catamaran tours to kite surfing.

Fowl Cay Resort

Fowl Cay Resort caters to travelers who might not dig the setup of a more traditional all-inclusive. Instead of massive buffets and nightly entertainment, this low-key stay offers a sense of seclusion that’s wrapped up in villas overlooking aqua water, snorkeling whenever the mood strikes, and captaining your own powerboat.

Grand Isle Resort & Residences

Grand Isle Resort & Residences earns high praise for its spectacular setting on Emerald Bay on the island of Great Exuma. The villas are equipped with full kitchens, comfortable living areas, and up to four bedrooms, making them ideal for a quick getaway or a longer stay with the whole family. The property also boasts amenities such as an infinity pool, a championship golf course, a spa, a fitness center, and three restaurants.

Kahari Resort

Kahari Resort , a boutique escape on Stocking Island, is a favorite among eco-conscious travelers and serenity seekers alike. Surrounded by the untrammeled beauty of clear water and lush flora, the hotel inspires visitors to reconnect with nature, whether that's lazing on the pristine, private beach or going on a bonefishing excursion.

Hideaways at Palm Bay

True to its name, Hideaways at Palm Bay emanates a relaxed energy that allows vacationers to unwind within moments of arriving. Amenities include an outdoor pool, sun terrace, barbecue facilities, water sports, table tennis, fishing, board games, a restaurant, and a bar. There's also a free shuttle into town for stress-free exploration.

You’ve likely seen videos of influencers and tourists swimming with pigs all over social media. This activity goes down at the Instagram-famous Pig Beach on Big Major Cay, an uninhabited island that’s accessible via boat. Of course, as with any experience that involves animals, it’s important to do your research to find an ethical tour operator, and read up on best practices before going.

Coco Plum Beach

Situated on Great Exuma, the famous Coco Plum Beach is ideal for those seeking a calm day of sun, sand, and sea. “It’s an idyllic spot to spend the day and have a picnic lunch since it’s dotted with shade-giving palms,” says Emmett Saunders, executive director at the Exuma Chamber of Commerce .

Tropic of Cancer Beach

Located on the coast of Little Exuma, Tropic of Cancer Beach is the longest on the island. Featuring powdery sand and translucent water, it’s easy to see why it ranks at the top of must-see lists for travelers visiting the Exumas.

Thunderball Grotto

“Don’t miss Thunderball Grotto, an underwater cave just west of Staniel Cay that you might recognize from the James Bond movies,” says Justin Minns, manager of Paradise Bay . The entrance is hidden under the water, but curious travelers can swim through during low tide to see an array of colorful fish and tropical marine life.

Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park Visitor Center

Minns encourages travelers interested in outdoor adventures to head to Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park Visitor Center. The ecological area, which extends from Shroud Cay in the north to Bells Cay in the south, protects mangroves and amazing marine species.

Stocking Island Beaches

To get up close and personal with one of the prettiest parts of the Exumas, Minns advises visitors to arrange an excursion to the photogenic beaches on Stocking Island, wh enjoy the pristine shoreline, a splash in the clear water, and snorkeling.

Cocoplum Bistro

The top-rated restaurant on Great Exumas, Cocoplum Bistro serves French cuisine with a Bahamian twist in an upscale yet warm setting that’s ideal for a memorable night out on vacation. Tip: Don’t leave without sampling the lobster tempura.

Sandpiper Cafe

To fill your belly (and photo roll) while out and about in George Town, beeline it to the Sandpiper Cafe , a great spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Don’t sleep on the homemade pastries and desserts.

Shirley's at the Fish Fry

Saunders recommends Shirley's at the Fish Fry for delicious and unique Bahamian seafood dishes such as coconut grouper, steamed snapper, and curry conch. The breezy beach-shack atmosphere and rum drinks play into the vacation vibes, too.

Tropic Breeze Beach Bar & Grill

Craving classic Caribbean cuisine? Tropic Breeze Beach Bar & Grill receives rave reviews from past dinners for its mouthwatering food (you’d be hard-pressed to find tastier rock lobster and grouper fingers anywhere) and beautiful beachside setting on Little Exuma.

Blu on the Water

Celebrating something special? Saunders suggests making a reservation at Blu on the Water . At this fine-dining favorite in Rolletown, diners are treated to creative presentations of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. To wash down the scrumptious food? A handcrafted cocktail, of course.

The busiest period in the Exumas is from December through April, when many travelers are keen to trade the winter doldrums for sunshine and salty breezes. Minns suggests avoiding September and October, which tend to be quite hot. “It’s also when many Bahamians go on holiday, so certain places are closed during that time.”

Several airlines operate nonstop service between major U.S. cities and Nassau. From there, travelers can hop aboard a Bahamasair flight to George Town on Grand Exuma. “We’re also excited to see the new airport that’s underway in Great Exuma to meet the current and future travel demand,” says Saunders.

Taxis and car rentals are readily available for visitors. The same goes for charter and self-captained boats to explore the many smaller islands and cays.

Exumas Itinerary: How to Plan the Perfect Trip to the Most Beautiful Islands in the Caribbean

It’s funny the different ways trips end up happening. I have some spots I go to annually, traditions from childhood. Special places I go to as often as possible…my go to destinations. Places I plan and save to visit that are most likely once in a lifetime trips. And then there are the trips that end up happening pretty randomly. Like, because I saw adorable little pigs swimming in turquoise water on Instagram.

I’ll be honest. That’s how my trip to the Exumas ended up happening. Because of the pigs. But first let’s back up and get a little context.

great exuma trips

If you’re looking for paradise on earth, you’ll find it in the Exumas. The Exuma Cays are a chain of 360+ islands in the Bahamas just southeast of Nassau. They’re famous for their white sand beaches and having some of the bluest water in the world. Actually, before the Exumas “took off” as a popular destination, when asked how visitors found out about the Exumas, most visitors would say they were looking on Google Earth for the bluest water in the world and they found it in the Exumas!

And of course…those adorable swimming pigs!

great exuma trips

My Itinerary

My trip to the Exumas happened in June (summer is considered “off season” in a lot of places in the Caribbean) with a group of NINE girlfriends. Traveling from Tulsa (OK), I will tell you…it was not easy getting to the Exumas. 95% of flights to Georgetown (Great Exuma) come from Miami (and when we went there was only one flight a day). So our travel day started bright and early leaving Tulsa, laying over in Dallas and then Miami before finally arriving in Georgetown. And of course, we were delayed in Dallas (due to general incompetency : ) and our plane came in late to Miami. After RUNNING to get to the gate, they had already closed it. We were some of the first ones to get to the gate and the agent informed us that we couldn’t board (even though the plane was still at the gate) and the flights were sold out for the next three days but they could put us on standby for the third day. Umm, what?

We were a little stunned thinking that 3/4 of our vacation was suddenly out the window and as more people from our delayed flight started showing up at the gate, it became clear that 20-30 had also missed the daily flight to Georgetown. Let me tell you…it started to get a little loud and it wasn’t very long until the situation ended up on a manager’s radar. Long story short (too late!) they ended up reopening the aircraft door (which apparently is not supposed to happen) and hurrying us all on board without checking tickets, passports, or anything. What an experience.

great exuma trips

Anyways, we made it to Georgetown, got our rental cars, and checked into our vacation rental. We booked a large villa that was part of a little complex that had a shared pool and it was right on the beach. We did a little grocery run that night as we planned to have quite a few of our meals in our villa.

We were on the island for about 4 days and here’s what we did:

  • An 8-hour boat excursion that took us almost all the way across the island chain. In addition to seeing the most insanely blue water and white sand, we swam with the pigs, snorkeled in Thunderball Grotto, swam with nurse sharks, visited some iguanas, and sunbathed on a truly amazing sand bar. Easily the highlight of the trip.
  • Spent Sunday at the Chat n’ Chill for their weekly pig roast. We took a ferry over from Georgetown and spent the day playing in the water, lounging under palm trees, chowing down on local food, and hiking across the island.
  • Drove down to Little Exuma to see the Tropic of Cancer beach and hang out at Santana’s. We did not see Johnny Depp.
  • Poked around Georgetown and did a little shopping.

great exuma trips

Overall, it was a nice, relaxing trip, but I still felt like I got to see what I came for. Here’s my #1 recommendation: the prettiest sites in the Exumas are best seen by boat. While the beaches are spectacular, the real beauty of the Exumas is the water. You have to plan at LEAST one boat excursion during your trip as getting to zip in between white sandy cays as you glide through turquoise clear water is the real magic of the Exumas.

Where to Stay in the Exumas

While the Exumas are made up of a lot of islands, not many of them are inhabited (the majority are private) and there are even fewer places to stay.

Great Exuma

Great Exuma is the main island of the Exumas and home to Georgetown (where the airport is). You’ll find the most options of places to stay here. You’ll also have the biggest variety of restaurants and shopping (although still limited). There are a couple of resorts on Great Exuma but it’s mostly small inns and vacation rentals.

Sandals : If you want the ultimate resort experience and you’re willing to shell out the big bucks, Sandals Emerald Bay is pretty incredible. It’s adults only and it sounds like you’d never want to leave the resort! Check pricing and read reviews here .

great exuma trips

Grand Isle Resort and Spa : This is where I would stay if I make it back to the Exumas. It shares the same beach with Sandals, but it’s a much more laid back resort experience. The pools are gorgeous and we ate at the restaurant by the pool a couple of times. If you want some of the resort amenities (pool and restaurant) at a better bargain, Grand Isle Villas offers one, two, and three bedroom villa style options. Check pricing and read reviews here .

We stayed in a vacation rental in the “Jimmy Hill Edition”. It’s a collection of about 6 vacation homes/condos that have a shared pool. The villa was great and the beach was beautiful but the water on this side of the island was pretty rough and we didn’t spend a lot of time at the beach there.

To find EXACTLY what you’re looking for in a vacation rental, search here and filter for budget, rooms, etc.

great exuma trips

Little Exuma

Connected to Great Exuma by bridge, Little Exuma is its smaller and quieter neighbor. You won’t find any resorts here but there are plenty of vacation rentals that front its idyllic beaches. Little Exuma is perhaps the best of both worlds. You have quiet, beautiful Caribbean style beaches but the restaurants on Great Exuma are still accessible by car.

Search for vacation rentals here , and if you want to stay on one of the world’s most epic (and uncrowded beaches) look for something on the Tropic of Cancer beach.

Staniel Cay

Staniel Cay is quite a ways northwest from Great Exuma and it’s the boating capital of the Exumas. If you’re chartering, this is the place where you’ll pick up your boat. This small island has less of a local feel than Great and Little Exuma and feels more like a resort community. There are no cars on the island and only a couple of places to stay but it feels pretty perfect. It’s also close to Big Farmer’s Cay (where the swimming pigs are), Thunderball Grotto, and an incredible sand bar.

great exuma trips

The most convenient place to stay on the island is the Staniel Cay Yacht Club (it’s the only resort/inn) and it’s pretty adorable. There are also a few vacation rentals. Search here for more options.

Not see what you’re looking for? Interested in staying on your own private island? (Hey, a girl can dream). Search here for vacation rentals . You can search by size, budget, location, etc. so you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for. The great thing about the Exumas are all of the beachfront options. Even if you go with a vacation rental, you’ll easily be able to find on right on the beach.
