Chicago Historical sites – Visitor’s Guide (With Map!)

Sharing is caring!

guided tours in chicago history

When you think of Chicago, it’s hard not to think about history. Chicago is filled with some of the best historical sites in the United States. Located in the heart of the Midwest, Chicago is both famous and infamous for its history, from its stunning architecture to its notorious gangsters. It’s hard to walk the streets without imagining traveling back in time to visit the former residents in their heyday.

While I’d definitely recommend taking an architecture cruise or bus tour to get a feel for the wide variety, taking individual tours of some of the historic homes in the city is a must. And if you’re a Burnham or Wright fan, then you are definitely in luck.

For history beyond the architecture, make sure you put some Chicago museums on your list, like the Chicago History Museum or the Driehaus Museum. There you can explore the cultural heart of the city, one built by hard work and immigrants coming together to forge a new home on the banks of Lake Michigan over many decades to create the city we know and love today.

CHICAGO HISTORICAL SITES

Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT ROBIE HISTORIC HOUSE

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the University of Chicago campus, the  Robie House  earned it’s heritage status by being one of the best examples of Prairie style architecture in the world. Built for Frederick C. Robie, the house was completed in 1910.

When Robie was forced to sell the house to settle debts shortly after the completion of the house, the home changed hands quickly to two other families. Their stays in the home would be short lived as well with the last family only staying until the mid 1920s. The house would go on to serve many other purposes including a classroom and office space.

In the mid 20th century the house would nearly be demolished, with Wright lobbying to save the home. The Robie House is considered the last of the “true” Wright Prairie style homes.

Tours are available Thursday through Monday from 10-3pm. The limited hours make planning ahead a necessity, and you can purchase tickets online ahead of time to be extra prepared.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HISTORIC HOME AND STUDIO

One of, if not  the  most famous architect in the United States, Frank Lloyd Wright’s style and homes are cherished throughout the U.S. and on the National Register of Historic Places. His home and studio are still preserved in Oak Park where a historic district features a number of Wright designed homes.

Wright’s home was built in 1889, and was Wright’s first true artistic and architectural experiment into his own design. Visitors can  tour the home  and learn more about Wright as both a person and an architect.

Chicago Union Station

HISTORIC CHICAGO UNION STATION

If you want a taste of art deco style, you can step into Chicago’s Union Station. Union Station was originally designed by famed architect Daniel Burnham, and built by Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. The rail station which is still active, was opened in 1925. Originally intended to be expanded into something even more grand, the development of the building stalled during The Great Depression.

The station would get a second life when there was a flurry of rail activity during WWII when the location served tens of thousands of passengers and hundreds of trains, many of them carrying soldiers. Norman Rockwell captured the Christmas season in 1944 in a  Saturday Evening Post cover .

The vaulted ceilings and glass panes will still make you feel like you’ve entered the past, despite the hum of over a hundred thousand passengers a day walking around you. If you want help navigating the history, the Chicago History Museum occasionally offers walking tours of the station. Check  their calendar  to see if there’s one available when you’re in town.

ROOKERY BUILDING

The Rookery Building is the product of famous architects Burnham and Root. Built in 1888, the Rookery was built on the former location of the temporary city hall (erected after the Great Chicago Fire). It’s considered one of the premiere architectural landmarks in the city and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Once completed, the Rookery was also the site of Burnham and Root’s offices and was the location where they began planning the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. The Burnham Library is still on site to this day.

Burnham and Root weren’t the only famous architects to make their mark. Frank Lloyd Wright redesigned the lobby in 1905. Wright played on the original ironwork adding marble and ornamentation, making the light court an even brighter and more beautiful architectural wonder.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Trust  offers tours  of the Rookery, one that covers the Rookery’s light court and another that partners that tour with one of Burnham’s library.

PALMER HOUSE HILTON – Historic Chicago Hotel

Wishing you could stay somewhere historic? The Palmer House Hilton is an option. Definitely not the only historic hotel in town, but one of the more famous. The Palmer House is listed as a Historic Hotel of America through the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The current hotel is the third iteration as the first, a wedding present, burned down in the Chicago Fire after only 13 days, and the second, originally built in 1875, was replaced in 1925 by a bigger more modern hotel.

In the 1940s famed hotelier Conrad Hilton purchased the property and it has been one of the chains signature hotels ever since.

Even if you don’t plan to stay at the hotel, you can still catch a glimpse of the historic lobby. If you’re into  food history , legend also has it that the brownie was invented in the hotel as a treat for women visiting the hotel during the Columbian Exposition in 1893.

Jane Addams Hull House

JANE ADDAMS-HULL HOUSE

Hull-House  was Chicago’s first settlement home. Settlement homes were homes run by middle to upperclass women that served as outreach centers for the working class. Women would run a number of social services from the home and helped immigrants adapt to life in America by offering classes on English and American government alongside instruction on sewing and cooking. They also offered daycare for children, libraries and an art gallery.

Jane Addams ran the house with a number of other influential women. Hull-House was originally opened in 1889, and Jane Addams lived and managed the house until her death in 1935. She also worked tirelessly for women’s causes like suffrage, argued for peace during WWI, and ultimately won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.

Jane Addams-Hull House is located on campus at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The museum is closed Mondays and Saturdays (as well as major holidays and for school breaks) so plan your visit ahead of time. Public tours are available and reservations are encouraged.

CLARK HOUSE MUSEUM

Built in 1836, the  Clarke House  is the oldest house in Chicago. Interpreted to the pre-Civil War era, the house gives a glimpse of life in early Chicago. Exhibits inside also explain the history of the house, it’s moves throughout the city and the various roles the house played before becoming a museum. There are free one hour guided tours of the home for those who want to visit.

Chicago Driehaus Museum

DRIEHAUS MUSEUM & NICKERSON MANSION

For a taste of art nouveau and a glimpse at Chicago’s guilded age, the  Drieshaus Museum  is your best bet. The museum features opulent examples of art nouveau style and decorative arts. The home is also known for its many stained glass works of art.

The Driehaus Museum is located inside the Nickerson Mansion, the former home of a Chicago banker completed in 1883.

CHICAGO HISTORY MUSEUM

If you really want to get to the heart of history in the city there is no better place than the Chicago History Museum. The museum has permanent exhibitions that cover the cities vast history including everything from its famous shopping district and stores to infamous 1930s crime to the cities deep relationship with jazz and blues.

If you’d rather experience history outside the walls of the museum, Chicago History also hosts bus and walking tours that give visitors a hands on history experience in the city. The museum is open 7 days a week, but hours vary. Check  their website  for more up to date information on admission, discounts, and parking.

GARFIELD PARK CONSERVANCY

If you need a breath of nature to break up your hunt for historic sites in Chicago, consider a visit to the  Garfield Park Conservancy . Built in 1908, the conservancy still counts as something historic to do and it has beautiful exhibits of plants from around the world. While you explore them you can also marvel at the stunning glass pane ceilings.

Old Chicago Water Tower Drawing

OLD CHICAGO WATER TOWER

Built in 1869, the Chicago Water Tower housed a pumping structure that brought water from Lake Michigan into the city of Chicago as the city was quickly outgrowing it’s water supply. One of the few structures to survive the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the Water Tower serves as one of the city’s longtime landmarks.

You can easily get a glimpse of the Chicago Water Tower while getting in some shopping on the Magnificent Mile. The Tower is located at 806 N Michigan Avenue,

Historic US Route 66 Begin Marker

One of the most iconic travel routes in the United States, Route 66 stretches from Los Angeles through the Southwest and up through the Midwest finally reaching it’s end (or beginning depending on which way you’re headed) at Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. Since the route has changed over the years, there are several signs in the city marking the terminus of one end of the route including one near the Art Institute in Chicago.

A Guide to Chicago’s Historic Landmarks and Monuments

  • by Chicago Team
  • September 5, 2023 April 4, 2024

Chicago’s iconic monuments and landmarks are essential in protecting the city’s rich history and legacy. They showcase how the city has changed over time and are symbols of its triumphs and struggles. From the Willis Tower to the Art Institute of Chicago , each landmark has its own tale to tell.

Grant Park is an example: a tranquil green area in downtown Chicago. Not only is it a recreational space, but it’s also home to significant landmarks like Buckingham Fountain and Millennium Park . These monuments are cherished by locals and admired by tourists from around the world.

Navy Pier is another remarkable structure. Although originally built as a shipping facility, it has been transformed into an entertainment hub with stunning views of Lake Michigan. It’s a place of leisure and culture, a reminder of Chicago’s maritime legacy.

Among the lesser-known sites is The Rookery Building . Its lobby was redesigned by the famous Frank Lloyd Wright , with modern elements blending seamlessly with traditional architecture. This fusion conveys the city’s spirit of creativity and adaptation.

When visiting these landmarks, it’s important to appreciate their stories. Local guides and resources can help you gain a more profound understanding of their significance. Moreover, guided tours led by local experts offer unique insights and bring the sites to life.

Brief history of Chicago: Highlighting key events and developments that shaped the city’s architecture and cultural heritage

Chicago’s past has made a mark on its iconic architecture and culture. In the mid-19th century, it underwent a fast transformation due to railroads and the I & M Canal. This brought many immigrants looking for work, which further grew the city.

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 had a lasting effect. Even though it was devastating, it sparked the city’s rebirth. Architects like Louis Sullivan and Daniel Burnham could re-design Chicago with modern skyscrapers and urban planning.

In 1893, the World’s Columbian Exposition put Chicago on the map as a thriving metropolis. It showcased architectural wonders like the Ferris Wheel and brought attention to Frank Lloyd Wright .

In the 20th century, Chicago kept embracing architecture. The Chicago School of Architecture began a new era – buildings had both functionality and beauty. Examples are Willis Tower (previously Sears Tower) and Tribune Tower .

To appreciate the architecture, explore the neighborhoods. Each has a different style, from Victorian-style homes in Lincoln Park to bungalows in Garfield Park. It’s a great way to understand how culture and architecture connect.

To learn about culture, visit museums like the Art Institute of Chicago . Here, art by Grant Wood and Georgia O’Keeffe illuminates the city’s identity and architecture.

For a deeper experience, take guided tours. These allow visitors to explore different architectural movements and themes. Examples are the Chicago River Cruise and an Art Deco Walking Tour. You can uncover the city’s architectural marvels.

Importance of preservation: Discussing the reasons for preserving historic landmarks and monuments

Preserving historic landmarks and monuments is a must. They are significant for their culture, history and architecture . These structures act as a bridge to our past. They help us value our society’s achievements, battles, and progress.

Not only do these places bring identity and pride to communities, they also lure tourists from all over. Keeping such sites safe not only safeguards their physical integrity, but also ensures future generations can enjoy them.

Further, these monuments and landmarks add to urban planning. They boost a city’s attractiveness and character. They give us a peek into different eras of architecture.

An amazing example is Chicago’s Buckingham Fountain . Constructed in 1927, it is one of the world’s biggest fountains. Many Chicagoans have lovely memories linked to this landmark. It symbolizes nights spent watching its captivating water displays. Without proper preservation , this treasured monument might have been forgotten.

Notable landmarks and monuments in Chicago:

Chicago, a city steeped in history and bursting with life, showcases its architectural and cultural beauty through numerous iconic landmarks. From skyscrapers to sculptures, it has something for everyone!

The Willis Tower – previously known as the Sears Tower – is a prominent landmark. An observation deck at the top of the tower provides incredible views of the city.

The Art Institute of Chicago is a must-see for art lovers, housing masterpieces from artists like Van Gogh and Monet.

Millennium Park , located downtown, is a green oasis with amazing landmarks such as the reflective Cloud Gate sculpture – famously known as “The Bean”.

Grant Park’s Buckingham Fountain is the final stop on the list of notable attractions. This grand fountain is a sight to behold, with intricate designs and mesmerizing water displays.

Edgewater emerged in the late 19th-century as a prominent neighborhood in the northern part of Chicago. Wealthy families purchased lakeside homes featuring modern amenities while immigrant families moved into the Andersonville and Argyle enclaves within Edgewater. Founded in 1988, the Edgewater Historical Society preserves and interprets the rich history of their local community. In 2002 the Society found a permanent home in a former firehouse on Ashland Avenue, and today the Society offers rotating exhibits on local history.

For nearly a century, the Swedish Bakery was a well-known culinary landmark along Clark Street in Andersonville. A Swedish ethnic enclave, Andersonville benefited from significant Swedish migration to Chicago in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although the neighborhood's Swedish roots have waned in recent decades, the Swedish Bakery remained an important connection to the area's Scandinavian past. In 2017, after 88 years in business, the Swedish Bakery closed its doors. Within a year, however, it was replaced with Lost Larson, a Scandinavian inspired bakery that continues to serve traditional Swedish food.

Found inside Chicago’s historically Swedish neighborhood of Andersonville is the indispensable establishment of Simon’s Tavern. The tavern was named after the bar’s founder Simon Lundberg, a Swedish immigrant. After WWI, Lundberg operated a grocery store; but once Prohibition took effect, he secretly began selling whiskey with his coffee, likely acquiring the alcohol from Al Capone. Lundberg became so successful selling bootlegged whiskey that he afforded to purchase a new location for a second storefront which concealed the No Name Club speakeasy, which is the current location of Simon’s Tavern. After the end of Prohibition, Simon converted his storefront on Clark Street into a bar which continues to be a cornerstone establishment in the Andersonville neighborhood.

As Chicago's population boomed around the 20th century, demand skyrocketed for more schools. The Chicago Board of Education's chief architect Dwight Perkins oversaw the construction of several new schools in the city. Dwight was one of a handful of architects giving rise to the Prairie School, which featured imposing walls and strong vertical and horizontal lines. In 1908, the cornerstone was laid for Lyman Trumbull Elementary School in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. Named for the Illinois senator who introduced the 13th Amendment to end slavery, Trumbull Elementary showcases Prairie School design. The school opened its doors to students in 1909 and continued operation until 2013. In 2018, the private Chicago Waldorf School opened in the historic Trumbull building and continues operation today.

During the late 19th and early 20th century, millions of Swedes immigrated to the United States. Many settled in the growing, bustling Midwestern metropolis of Chicago. The Swedish immigrants brought with them their Protestant beliefs and new churches emerged across the Midwest. Established in 1892, the Ebenezer Lutheran Church serves as a religious and social hub within the ethnically-Swedish Andersonville and Edgewater communities of Chicago. The great limestone church was completed in 1908, designed by local Swedish architect Andrew Norman. The church has evolved over the years to reflect Chicago's changing community, but it still proudly carries on Swedish religious traditions such as the celebration of St. Lucia's Day and julmässa.

The Swedish American Telephone Company Building stands as a reminder of the Swedish enclave that lived near the business and the prominent role Swedish Americans played in the early days of the telephone. Accurate or not, the Swedes enjoyed a reputation for mastering telephone technology. The F.S. Betz Medical Supply Company constructed the historic building, but the Swedish American Telphone Company (established in 1899) moved into the building in 1905 after F.S. Betz vacated the facility. They remained in the building until 1923, when Denoyer-Geppert Company, a map and globe maker, moved in; they used the historic building as their headquarters for sixty years.

Welcome to the self-guided walking tour of chicago.

Explore the surprising beauty and history of the Windy City with this Chicago tours bundle of Millennium Park and Riverwalk! Snap a picture by the famous Cloud Gate sculpture and get away from the hustle and bustle in the city’s most iconic park. Then, stroll along the picturesque riverside, admire Chicago’s totally unique architecture, and learn the fascinating stories behind the city’s skyline. This combo is the easiest, best way to get to know this complex city!

About the Tour

Your Chicago tour through Millennium Park will begin at the park’s north end. From there, you’ll walk toward the famous Pritzker Pavilion, the park’s centerpiece. Once at the pavilion, you’ll learn about the biggest performances held here, the high-tech design, and the man behind it all: Jay Pritzker.

Next you’ll see the park’s “Secret Garden,” a beautiful green space featuring a peaceful boardwalk and fantastic skyline views.

After that, you’ll spot the Art Institute of Chicago and continue on to the incredible Crown Fountain, known for its intricately detailed “face towers.”

At last, you’ll arrive at Cloud Gate, known by the locals as “The Bean” (but don’t tell the artist)! Get to know the wacky artist behind it, find out how he created such a huge, smooth surface, and don’t forget to snap some pictures of your reflection! The Millennium Park tour concludes here.

Your Riverwalk tour begins by the historic DuSable Bridge. Here, you’ll learn not only about this picture-perfect bridge, but also about the iconic Wrigley Building.

From there, you’ll stroll west along the riverside, past what was once voted America’s Most Beautiful Bridge. After that, you’ll stop at the Chicago Vietnam Veterans Memorial for a moment of somber reflection.

The next stop is hard to miss: It’s the Marina Towers, looming 600 feet over the river. Find out why people say these towers are a “city within a city,” then keep walking to the Dearborn Street Bridge. Hear the full story of why an angry mob once descended on this bridge with axes, then continue your stroll.

As you walk, your audio guide will also recount the tale of one of the deadliest shipwrecks in American history… which took place right on the Chicago River!

Up next is the humbly-named (but not so humbly designed) Merchandise Mart. This gorgeous example of the art deco style is sure to pique the interest of any budding architects!

Next, you’ll reach Wolf Point, where, nearly 200 years ago, Chicago’s very first hotel once stood. Then you’ll get a good look at the Tribune Tower, home to the famous Chicago Tribune. This skyscraper also contains pieces of historic buildings from across the world, including the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Berlin Wall!

After that, you’ll come face to face with NBC’s Chicago headquarters, which look suspiciously like the iconic 30 Rockefeller Center in the Big Apple… because it was modeled after that iconic skyscraper!

Finally, you’ll stop by the last bridge separating the Chicago River from the great lake beyond. It’s a great place to admire the scenery, and an even better one to snap some photos for your Insta. The Riverwalk tour concludes here.

This bundle is the easiest, most flexible way to see the Windy City. So what are you waiting for?
