9. Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo benefited from the fortunes of neighboring resort town Ixtapa, which Mexico’s tourism body carefully developed in the 1970s. This was a direct attempt to replicate the Caribbean splendor of Cancún on the Pacific coast.

Ixtapa’s hotspot status trickled 6.5km (4 miles) south to Zihuatanejo, which feels like a sleepy fishing village elevated by a handful of relaxed seaside sanctuaries like Thompson Zihuatanejo on Playa La Ropa .

In this blissed-out traditional Guerrero town, there are storied, curiously named beaches that are great for surfing, diving, fishing and seafood-feasting in the presence of crashing waves.

Take a walk on Playa Las Gatas (Cat Beach), reportedly named after land wildcats or the whiskered nurse sharks in Zihua’s waters, or make a dash for the aforementioned Playa La Ropa (Clothes Beach), the town’s most popular beach, which incorporates a legend of a Spanish shore wreckage containing washed silk clothes.

Best place for quiet beaches

La Paz , the capital of Baja California Sur, has something for every kind of beach lover. The city is a delightful springboard to adventures on the Sea of Cortez, home to 39% of the world’s marine mammals.

Around 40 minutes from La Paz, Playa El Saltito feels tranquil and isolated during the sweltering days, and its crystal waters come alive with bioluminescence at night. Though competition is tough, Playa Balandra , with its unique mushroom-like rock formation, is heralded as one of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches.

Over the years, Tulum shed its former name (Zama), and its position as a secluded and sleepy beach-meets-jungle town in Riviera Maya and subsequently ripened into a world-famous pilgrimage for honeymooners, hedonists and holistic tourists. The spirituality-focused traveler will find a host of things to do in Tulum ranging from cacao ceremonies to pre-Hispanic sound healing and open-air rooftop yoga classes.

Tulum is a well-rounded destination with scrumptious restaurants and bars, and accommodations for all budgets, from waterfront shacks to top-end resorts and thatch-roofed boutique boltholes like La Valise Tulum .

The beaches are postcard-ready, the most celebrated stretch being Playa Ruinas with its strikingly well-preserved Maya ruins perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. There are also numerous attractions in the surrounding area, such as the massive Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka’an , the secluded fishing village Punta Allen and the ruins of Cobá .

Planning tip : Tulum Pueblo (the town center) is where the really cheap eats and sleeps are found, but it’s a 20-minute bike ride or 12-minute taxi to the beach. Plan ahead to find well-priced beach accommodations if that’s where you’d prefer to stay.

12. Los Cabos

Best place for glitz, glamor and parties

Sister cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo need no introduction. The former is notorious among party-hearty North American crowds, while the latter is more sedate with art galleries, celebrity-frequented luxury resorts, upscale boutiques and over-the-top decadent tequila tasting rooms.

Together, these perennially sunny spots on the southernmost tip of the Baja California Sur peninsula have become two of the top places to see in Mexico.

Under the blazing Cabo sun, golfers chase their dreams on emerald greens designed by legendary champion Jack Nicklaus, and surfers tackle world-class surf breaks.

Not many beaches are safe for swimming, but other outdoor pursuits like deep-sea fishing, spotting sea lions and whale watching (from mid-December to mid-April) keep water babies coming back.

13. Pico de Orizaba

Pico de Orizaba is a symmetrical, snow-capped volcano on the border of Puebla and Veracruz states. Also called Citlaltépetl, it’s the highest peak in Mexico and the third-highest mountain in North America, with a summit elevation of around 5636m (18,491ft) above sea level.

Dormant but not extinct, the last recorded eruption was in 1846, and it is one of the most popular places to visit in Mexico for serious climbers – professionals prep there before taking on Mount Everest. Treks start from the small village of Tlachichuca, and the ascent requires some technical skills – Pico de Orizaba is the ultimate trekking and climbing challenge in Mexico.

If sea-level thrills are more to your liking, there's plenty on offer in the town of Orizaba, including a beautiful riverside walk, a couple of impressive museums and galleries and a unique "Iron Palace. " The perfect introduction to Veracruz state's most appealing town is to hop into the cable car up to the park atop 1240m (4068ft) Cerro del Borrego.

From this lofty, green perch, you can admire the domes and bell towers of the city's many historic churches and the surrounding mountainous terrain, including the snowcapped summit of Pico de Orizaba.

14. Copper Canyon Railway

The Ferrocarril Chihuahua Pacífico (Copper Canyon Railway) remains one of Latin America’s best rail trips. Also known as the Chepe Express (from the “Ch” of Chihuahua and “P” of Pacífico), trains climb from sea level at Los Mochis to the town of Creel via the sensational rocky landscapes of the rust-hued Copper Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of Mexico”).

Vistas from your window during the train journey include alpine forests, subtropical valleys, Tarahumara villages and glimpses of some of the world’s deepest canyons.

15. Oaxaca City

Once the capital of the Zapotec Civilization, the state of Oaxaca is now better known as Mexico’s primary mezcal-producing region. With balmy beaches spread across 9,350 km of coastline, rich culture and history, beautifully preserved colonial towns, warm hospitality and mouthwatering cuisine, it’s no wonder that Mexico is one of the most visited destinations in the world.

The multifaceted country is bursting with life, flavour and diversity. Whether you crave nightlife, fun in the sun or spiritual solitude; jungle, mountain, ocean or desert; mellowing out in a charming pueblito or going full throttle in one of the greatest cities in the world: prepare to be astonished.

Current travel restrictions and entry requirements

There are no test or vaccination requirements for entry into Mexico.

Mask requirements vary by city and state. Currently, masks are no longer required in open spaces but are still mandatory on public transport, including in airports and airplanes.

Best time to go

There are good reasons to visit year-round. Generally, the best time is dry season (approximately November to April), when temperatures are at their coolest and there is little chance of rain. This is also the high tourist season, however: meaning elevated prices, busy resorts and the need to book in advance. Avoid beaches during Easter’s Semana Santa (Holy Week), when Mexicans head en masse to the coast.

Rainy season is June to October. If you can handle the humidity, the landscape is lush and there are low-season bargains to be snapped up. Summer is also the best time for surfing.

September and October are the wettest, stormiest months. Flooding can occur and it’s the most active period for hurricanes. November is the sweet spot, before the crowds arrive. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated nationwide on 1 and 2 November; the most famous celebrations are in Oaxaca and Janitzio island in Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan.

Top regions and cities

Mexico city.

Dynamic, immense, vibrant, oh so cool – Mexico’s capital, the fifth largest city in the world, is a colour and taste sensation. Ornate colonial buildings mingle with 1960s-era apartments and soaring skyscrapers; leafy parks and boulevards are oases in a sprawling urban jungle. This megalopolis is in constant motion – though don’t be surprised to find yourself occasionally stuck in gridlock or lingering over dessert, like the locals. Mexico City is a mecca for art, fashion, design and food; the gastronomic scene is worth the trip alone. Bars and restaurants make the “world’s best” lists every year, while the antojitos (street food) need no accolades – just look for the carts with long queues. Visit one of the more than 150 museums, shop haute Mexican designers, or trawl flea markets. Marvel at the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan. Cheer (and jeer) at a lucha libre wrestling match, before capping off the night with dancing and tacos.

The arid desert landscape of Mexico’s southwest belies Oaxaca’s embarrassment of riches. Gastronomy, architecture, handicrafts and ethnic diversity flourish in this southern city. Today, Oaxaca is something like an artist’s colony and there are gorgeous, inspired touches at every turn. Jalisco and Nayarit

Located on the Central Pacific Coast, the neighbouring states of Jalisco and Nayarit deliver adventures on both land and sea. The mountainous, jungle-cloaked coastline, anchored by the small city of Puerto Vallarta, is a paradise for surfers and lovers of laidback public beaches. Whale watching is popular, as are spiritual retreats. Puerto Vallarta is also the gay capital of Mexico, with a whole district of hotels and restaurants catering to the LGBT+ community. Head north into Nayarit to discover a string of surfer towns: hop from beach to beach, enjoying fish ceviche under a thatched-roof palapa , or head into the highlands to Guadalajara, the burgeoning capital of Jalisco and heartland of Mexican charro (horsemanship), mariachi and tequila-making.

Quintana Roo

The state on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is better known by its brand name attractions Cancun and Riviera Maya, which includes Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum. The appeal is obvious: white sand, Caribbean sea, all-inclusive resorts, nightlife and entertainment for all budgets and ages. Do venture outside of the resort: drink up Caribbean island vibes on Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox. Disconnect with a rustic retreat on Bacalar Lagoon. Swim in cenotes, natural limestone sinkholes filled with clear, turquoise water. There are dozens to explore, along with many Mayan ruins.

With cacti-peppered desert coastlines and pounding azure surf, the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, collectively known as Los Cabos, are an adventure sport playground for travellers with deeper pockets. Ultra-luxury resorts boast dramatic oceanfront locations at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Both towns are a good base to explore the cape, and to golf, surf, sail, fish, dine, shop and party. Enjoy farm-to-table dining in spectacular settings. Scuba with whales and sharks in Cabo Pulmo National Park. Hike to the waterfalls Sol de Mayo and Canon de la Zorra, or the East Cape sand dunes. Drive to Todos Santos, then to the white sand and vivid blue water of Playa Balandra, before returning via the less developed eastern coast.

Mango, lemon, cherry, pistachio – no, not gelato flavours but the colours of the buildings in Merida, the largest city on the east coast Yucatan Peninsula. The region prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries, the wealth leading to a boom in manors and grand haciendas. The architecture is a delightful medley of Mayan with Old World Spanish, Italian and French-style, with beaux-arts wedding-cake facades. More colour can be found in the local markets bursting with exotic produce. Yucatecan cuisine is a distinctive mix of Mayan with European, Caribbean and Lebanese influences. Merida is the best place to try delicious slow-cooked, spiced pork cochinita pibil and sour lime soup. Outside of the Centro Historico, haciendas have been renovated into plush boutique hotels, while pretty beaches and cenotes offer a respite from Merida’s sweltering clime.

San Cristobal de las Casas

Nestled in a valley in the cool, hilly highlands of Chiapas, the southern-most state, San Cristobal de las Casa’s largely Indigenous population makes it one of the most unique places to visit in Mexico. The mountain town has a magical, lost-in-time quality. Ambling the steep cobblestone streets, broad plazas and hectic markets instantly transports visitors to another world; you’ll hear native languages instead of Spanish, see Tzotzil women in traditional embroidered blouses and black woollen skirts selling handwoven textiles and handicrafts.

The country’s fourth largest city would receive more attention if it wasn’t overshadowed by Mexico City, just 100km away. Puebla has all the enticing diversions of a large metropolis in Mexico, including a thriving gastronomy scene and street food galore. Two of the country’s most notable dishes, meat stuffed poblano chiles en nogada and mole poblano , a complex, earthy sauce made from ancho chile and chocolate, originated here. The towering 16th and 17th century Baroque-style cathedral is just one of countless well-preserved churches in the historic centre, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

The world’s most exciting food city has gastronomic experiences for every budget, from family-run taquerias to Michelin stars. Do a street food tour; indulge in Pujol restaurant’s renowned taco omakase; and join the crowds for late-night churros dipped into hot chocolate. On weekends, sample edible insects and other popular snacks in Xochimilco market before hiring a boat and floating around the canal drinking michelada .

Mezcal remains largely handcrafted by small artisanal producers, some of whom use modern machinery. Learn how it is made at a palenque , a traditional village distillery. Oaxaca also has an impressive lineup of non-alcoholic drinks to try. Refresh with spiced, sugary café de olla or horchata , a sweetened rice/nut drink. Cacao was revered by the Mayans and Aztecs; the custom continues with chocolate de agua , hot, frothed chocolate water, and tejate made of fermented cacao and maize.

The brilliant turquoise waters of Isla Espiritu Santo, a rocky archipelago in the Gulf of California, teem with marine life such as whales, sea turtles, manta rays and playful sea lions. Kayaking, stand-up paddling, snorkelling, diving or hiking can be done through authorised tour operators.

Getting around

Taxis are widely available. Ride-sharing apps such as Uber are popular in Mexico City and other large cities. However, the legal status is touch-and-go in tourist destinations such as Cancun and Los Cabos. Check before arriving.

Buses are how most of the population move. The quality can range from poor (albeit cheap) to modern, air-conditioned intercity coaches. A six- or eight-hour coach journey can be your trade-off for a bargain bus fare.

Flying is the best option for longer distances. Multiple airlines service domestic routes. Unfortunately, it often requires connecting through Mexico City’s ageing airport, which is running well over capacity. Factor in a generous amount of time to change planes.

How to get there

Several UK-based or serving airlines operate non-stop flights to Mexico City and Cancun, including British Airways, Aeromexico, Virgin Atlantic and Tui.

Cruise ships frequent the Mexican coast from September to May. Cruises along the Pacific Coast usually depart from ports in California, while cruises through the Caribbean Sea/Gulf of Mexico depart from Florida.

Money-saving tip

Shops and restaurants in tourist areas often accept US dollars and other foreign currencies but at an exorbitant exchange rate; it is always better to use Mexican pesos. For domestic flights, especially travelling through Mexico City, buying your ticket well in advance can save upwards of 50 per cent.

What’s the weather like?

The weather varies greatly between regions. Generally, there are two seasons: dry (November to May) and rainy (June to October). For beach destinations, dry season is characterised by sunny, balmy weather. In the highlands and Mexico City, it can get extremely cold at night; and it is not unusual for northern states to have snowfall. It doesn’t rain persistently during rainy season – rather, there is usually an intense downpour before the sunshine returns.

What time zone is it in?

Mexico has four time zones, though not all states observe daylight saving time. A large portion of the country, including Mexico City, observes Central Standard Time (used by several US states).

What currency do I need?

Mexican pesos.

What language is spoken?

Spanish is the main language of Mexico. In tourist destinations and in Mexico City’s upscale neighbourhoods, some English would be spoken. That said, try to learn polite greetings and basic phrases in Spanish; a little goes a long way to break the ice.

Do I need to tip?

Mexico has a tipping culture. The minimum wage in the service industry is extremely low and workers rely on tips ( propina ). Leave 10-15 per cent tip, or 20 per cent if service is good.

20 Unique Places in Mexico – Hidden Gems You Cannot Miss!

Just when you thought Mexico couldn’t give any more than amazing beaches, great food , friendly people, and even beloved all-inclusive resorts, it does!

As if the cloud-white beaches of Quintana Roo and the vibrant streets of CDMX weren’t enough, this ever-popular corner of the Americas starts flaunting long-lost mining towns in the sierras, multicolored lagoons with colonial forts, and even whole regions filled with waterfalls that few travelers have ever set eyes on before.

Here’s my guide to the coolest places in Mexico that you might want to have on the travel radar for your next trip to Mexico.

P.S. Keep in mind there are many more amazing spots in Mexico. After years of living in Mexico both full-time and part-time, I still keep discovering and I think it will take a lifetime to visit all the best places across the country.

Unique Places to Visit in Mexico

Bacalar and its surrounding lagoon is a dream for adventure travelers a little tired of the resort towns of the Quintana Roo.

The town of Bacalar itself is the entry point. It’s one of Mexico’s charming pueblos mágicos (magic towns) and is marked out by the muscular Fuerte de San Felipe – an old pirate-fighting citadel! Around that spreads the so-called Lagoon of Seven Colors, named for the patchwork of emeralds and turquoise blues that abound.

Head out by kayak or boat and you’ll encounter deep cenotes, shallow swimming spots, and secret bars nestled between the mangroves.

2. Grutas de Tolantongo

They call the Grutas de Tolantongo a hidden paradise up in the sierras and I’m inclined to agree. Make the trek and you’ll be greeted by streams of ribbon-like water cascading over the rocks.

Not many tourists know about this lovely box canyon, which carves its way through the hills above Route 27 some 86 miles north of Mexico City , but it’s well known to locals. It can actually be visited over a weekend trip from Mexico City pretty easily.

Cascades emerge from deep cave systems and are fed by underground hot springs. There’s now an on-site spa hotel resort with bathing pools cut straight into the hillsides – naturally!

3. Huasteca Potosina

Huasteca Potosina is the long-lost Shangri-La of the State of San Luis Potosí. Many travelers know of the greater region’s beautiful colonial mining town (the city of San Luis Potosí itself).

However, few choose to venture out to this part of the Mexican wilderness. It’s probably best to keep it that way, as this land is untouched and unmarred by human hands.

Waterfalls of milky blue spill from lush sierras dressed in wild jungles, making it a place to kayak, hike, search for exotic birds and orchid flowers on the trails. Waterfalls of this region beat the infamous Instagrammable Bali waterfalls, especially the Tamasopo ones.

Not many know that the infamous alcohol got its name from the name of the town in Mexico. Tequila isn’t usually on anyone’s list of must-visit towns in Mexico, most people just stay in Guadalajara, unless you know about its tequila train tours .

I highly recommend it to non-drinkers as well. The town is surrounded by fields of blue agave, the liquor’s main ingredient and it has a stunner of a colonial center.

You can ride horses, learn how to cultivate agave bushes, and even stay the night at a giant tequila barrel in the middle of the field.

5. Las Pozas of Edward James

Las Pozas has to be up there with the strangest landscape gardens in the Americas . Designed on the whims of the eccentric 19 th -century English art critic Henry James, it covers 80 acres of the high mountain forest in the tropical region of La Huasteca.

Now overgrown with vines and mosses, it’s a picture of surrealism in the middle of the woods, with twisted sculptures made of concrete, soaring lookout points, floating homes – the oddities go on.

6. Isla de las Munecas

This small island on the waters of the Xochimilco hides in the southern reaches of Mexico City . It’s surrounded by an urban nature park, so there’s less of the skyscrapers and taco stands, more of the grassy banks and woodlands.

The real attraction is the haunting array of toy dolls that are found across the island . They were placed there by the former owner, Don Julian Santana Barrera, who thought they’d chase away the spirit of a girl who drowned on the spot. Pretty spooky stuff!

Beware: The place is incredibly hard to get to because it requires permission from the son of the owner. Lots of trajineras (boats) in Xochimilco will promise you they’ll take you there, but in reality, they take you to the fake replica of the island on the standard route. It’s a pretty common scam in Mexico .

7. Calakmul Ruins

Move over Chichen Itza, the ruins of Calakmul reveal what was once the great capital of the so-called Kingdom of the Snake. It’s one of the best off-the-beaten-path Mexico adventures one can take to feel like Indiana Jones.

Back when the Mayan civilization was at its height, this conglomeration of nearly 7,000 ruins reigned supreme over a whopping 50,000 people or more. Dating back to 400, it’s an obvious UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains a pyramid that’s thought to be the largest ever built by the Maya .

Unlike at the famous Chichen Itza, you can climb every single structure (and there are a LOT) at Calakmul. Keep in mind that it takes an hour to get there from town to inside the jungle.

8. Sima de las Cotorras

When in Chiapas, everyone heads to Palenque and San Cristobal de las Casas, but skips Tuxtla and its surrounding natural beauty.

The colossal sinkhole of the Sima de las Cotorras is one of the wonders of the wild El Ocote Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas state. It’s now backed by the Sima de Cotorras Ecotourism Center, which organizes guided tours of the great underground chasm.

Cotorras means monk parakeets that live in the sinkhole and flew out every morning. It’s a beautiful sight!

Visitors can abseil down into the jungle-filled Sima, or take walk-through routes that reveal ancient cave art. Most will come to encounter the resident population of emerald-hued parakeets, though.

9. Hierve del Agua

Waterfalls made of rock ? You bet! These stunning geological formations are the result of thousands of years of calcite deposits on the sierras of Oaxaca state, one of the coolest places in Mexico.

They occupy a jaw-dropping location atop the undulating highlands of San Lorenzo Albarradas. There are two main falls – the larger and the smaller.

Both are pretty dramatic as they roll over the summits in a show of flowing calcium carbonate that looks just like classic H2O. The locals have even added in two artificial pools so you can swim on the top of the “falls” with a view.

10. Cenotes

There’s no doubt that cenotes are one of the most beautiful places in Mexico. There are about 6000 cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula , so you may spend years discovering it all.

Some are open-air, some are inside the cave, and some can only be seen if you’re diving. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a leap beyond Dos Ojos or Azul and find some off the beaten path cenotes .

11. Los Prismas Basalticos

Officially called the Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla , the Los Prismas Basalticos are sure to make you gasp with wonder the first time you set eyes on them.

It’s essentially a waterfall, but this one drifts through a series of rock stacks that were created by the slow cooling of magma from beneath the surface of the Earth.

The result? It looks as though the stream has carved a great cleft in the planet, which peels away in crags and columns to the left and right. There are awesome lookout platforms and viewpoints to enjoy on-site.

Izamal gets just a fraction of the crowds of other places in the Yucatan. While most people sun themselves on the beaches of Cancun or snorkel the reefs of the Isla Cozumel , this one’s fascinating Mesoamerican site remains largely undiscovered.

You can still see around five extra-large structures that reveal just a glimpse of how vast the old Maya site here was. On top of them is the famous Yellow City, a maze of cobbled lanes and Spanish casitas that are completely daffodil in color. It’s an Instagram dream!

Taxco is the hidden gem of the state of Guerrero. Most people head this way for the sparkling sands of Acapulco, but this is all about escaping to the hazy sierras where silver mines and metal crafters are the norms.

The town itself is wedged into a small valley and rolls down steep hillsides. Around it lies some of the oldest and most prolific precious metal mines in the country.

Stick to the center for sights like the Museo Guillermo Spartling (about silver working, of course) and the never-forget-me Parroquia de Santa Prisca y San Sebastían (what many consider to be the pinnacle achievement of the Baroque building style in the whole of the Americas).

14. Copper Canyon

Cutting through the peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental in a series of deep chasms and valleys, this mighty gorge is like Mexico’s answer to the Grand Canyon north of the border. It’s named for the coppery greenish-blue that tinges the side of the bluffs in the summer months.

Most will visit on the El Chepe train (the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico ) that whizzes through on its way from Chihuahua City to Mexico City.

It’s considered one of the most breathtaking locomotive rides in the world , and not just because you’ll be hitting heights of over 2,400 meters above sea level!

Leave the big, buzzy spring-break scene of Puerto Vallarta in the dust and make for the little village of Yelapa . It’s around the Bahia de Banderas to the south. The best part?

It’s totally cut off from the outside world, and the only ways to arrive are by boat across the sparkling Pacific or on an arduous jungle trail (kudos if you pick that one!).

Of course, the main draw here is the beachfront. It’s a huge scythe of powdery sand that slopes into a bay of emerald ocean water. The town itself has ramshackle seafood taco eateries and rustic palapas where you can stay to detox from civilization.

16. Santiago de Querétaro

Santiago de Querétaro, or just Querétaro for short, is the capital of the state of the same name. It rests up in the hills of central Mexico some 110 miles from Mexico City.

Most overland travelers will breeze through on their way to San Miguel de Allende. Stop and you’ll be treated to one of the loveliest colonial cities in the country , plus enjoy some cheese on the way from Ruta de Queso y Vino if you’re coming from Mexico City.

I especially like the vibrant nightlife alley of Mariano Matamoros 13, where Modelo beers fizz in the evening hours. To the west of that is Plaza de Armas, which rings with mariachi bands throughout the day.

17. Guanajuato

There’s no question in our minds that Guanajuato – or at least the old portion of Guanajuato – is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Unfolding in a valley between mineral-rich mountains in the geographical heart of the nation, it’s ferreted through with long tunnels that now host traffic but were once gushing rivers.

Above ground, the amazements continue with the ochre-hued Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato and the grand buildings of the University of Guanajuato. There’s also a Museum of the Mummies.

Adventurers also won’t be disappointed, because you can hike the soaring bluffs around El Cerro de La Bufa mountain that lurks ominously on the horizon to the south. 

18. Bahía de Loreto National Park

Clutching the east coast of the Baja California Peninsula means that the Bahía de Loreto National Park gets only a fraction of the visitors of Cabo San Lucas down on the oceanside portions of this popular part of Mexico.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it protects the rich marine world of the Sea of Cortez. Travelers can hop on a boat in the small town of Loreto and whizz across the water in search of sea lions, humpback whales, and sea turtles – there are loads. Don’t forget to charge the camera!

19. Isla Contoy

All eyes are on Cozumel and the Isla Mujeres when it comes to the Caribbean side of Mexico. However, the Isla Contoy is just as stunning as those – if not more!

It’s a mere five miles from tip to toe , dashing through the pearly waters with its mangrove swamps and swaying coconut palms. There are sugar-soft beaches that are worthy of the Bahamas to boot.

Only a few lucky tour companies are currently allowed to run trips to this speck on the Mexican map because the ecosystem is heavily managed. Expect to pay for the privilege to join them!

20. Isla Aguada

If you’re looking for an alternative to the much-photographed beaches of the Yucatan , be sure to put Isla Aguada on the radar. Straddling a spit of land between the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna de Términos, it’s a ramshackle fishing town that oozes authentic Mexicana coast charm .

The nearby beaches don’t have the same pristine white powder as the ones further east, but they do come with paint-peeling fishing boats, local B&Bs, and wave-lapped yellow sands.

I have been over thirty times over the years and there are lots I haven’t seen and done. But there is one thing for sure, time is not on my side.

Although I’ve visited most of the sites mentionned in this post, many others are still on my to-do list! I live in Merida, Yucatan, and have the luxury to be able to visit most places around it and have flown some other beautiful places. Mexico sure is a treasure and a never-ending surprise!

Hi Ana, I wan´t to spend 5-6 weeks in mexico this summer and work in a hostal with workaway. I want to stay around the same are and do some travelling around the area. I cant decide between Tulum and exploring the surronding areas i.e islas mujer, holbox, or puerto Vallarta and visiting areas around there. Which are would you say is more authentic experience and more travel oppurtunities in the area?

I’d say it’s equally touristy there, but it can be as authentic as you make it as there are plenty of locals around 😉

I haven’t been to the Yucatan and Baja yet but I have been in 7 of 20 so far and I hope to see the rest next year …. Most were on my To-Do list . You could add … When in Taxco … Mil Cascadas and Grutas Cacahuamilpa Going to Chiapas … Palenque, Cascadas de Agua Azul and El Chiflon Close to CD Mexico … Teotihuacan Pyramids A walk in the volcano in Toluca The Mariposa Monarca in Michoacan But there is a lot of little gems not that known all over the place: Real de Quatorze, El Oro, Temoya (Otomi sacred site), Malinalco, etc ….

That yellow town looks amazing. Haven’t been to Mexico yet, but definitely added a few places to my must visit list when I get to visit.

While cruising one year we hired a taxi and visited several destinations. The last place we visited was Bacalar, “Lake of the Seven Colors”. We have done several Cruises (at least we did at one time, Stupid Covid) and this was one of the high lights of our (wife agreed) several years of cruising. I’m still fascinated that a freshwater lake can look so beautiful.

One of the best posts I’ve read. So excited to check out these hidden gems! I went to Akumal 10 years ago and worry about over developement. Are there places on the Mayan Riveria that aren’t overrun by cruise ships and tourists?

All of these are pretty well known…my list would include mexcaltitlan “venice of mexico or birth place of Aztecs”, Tonala, La Laguna de Santa Maria del Oro, La Rumorosa, all 7 bays of Huatulco, Orizaba…to name a few

There are so many places to visit there that are not on here.

Tamul Waterfall is located just an hour from the city, and at nearly 345 feet high and 984 feet wide, it is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Mexico. You can take in the majestic falls from above, or take a boat ride to view it from below for about $35. In the lush jungle surrounding the falls, you might choose to enjoy some thrilling opportunities to hike, rappel, or mountain bike. Other waterfalls worth visiting in Huasteca Potosina include El Salto, El Meco, Minas Viejas, Micos Falls, and Tamasopo Falls.

The Cave of the Swallows is another must-visit spot. With a depth of nearly 1,680 feet, the massive chasm appears bottomless -- and the entire Empire State Building could fit within it. It's a popular spot for base jumpers looking for a heart-pumping adventure.

Planning Your Trip

The remote location of Huasteca Potosina deters many would-be visitors, but for those of you who are seeking adventure and off-the-beaten-path exploration, you couldn't choose a better Mexican destination, even if it does require a little extra planning. Renting a car is one of the best ways to reach Huasteca Potosina, although if you've never driven a car in Mexico before, it may be a stressful experience. From Mexico City, the drive to Ciudad Valles takes about eight hours. It's possible to find inexpensive rental cars in Mexico City for an average of $15 per day.

If you'd rather not drive, you can choose to fly into either San Luis Potosí, which has some international flights to the United States and is located 3 to 5 hours from Huasteca Potosina by car, or to Tampico, which has regional flights from Mexico City.

Within Ciudad Valles, you'll find plenty of hotels and accommodation options for under $100 per night, making it an excellent budget-friendly vacation spot. Backpackers can book hostel dorms for under $20 per night. Airbnb is another excellent option, especially if you're traveling with a group. You can find private homes that sleep multiple guests for anywhere from $80 - $200 per night.

Southwest adds tropical nonstop international destinations, more at Nashville airport

Southwest Airlines will add three nonstop flights from Nashville International Airport, the airport's largest operator announced Thursday. Two of the new routes out of BNA are to popular international travel destinations: Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The third nonstop route is to Indianapolis.

Southwest will begin flying the new routes in March 2025.

The discount carrier will offer the new international routes from Nashville once a week on Saturdays.

The Los Cabos International Airport is located on Mexico's Baja California Peninsula adjacent to the popular tourist destination Cabo San Lucas. The airport is also a transportation hub for the region.

Punta Cana Airport in the Dominican Republic is the second largest airport in the Caribbean.

“Continuing to establish additional international routes remains a longstanding goal, and we are eager to add these new vibrant cities to our roster," said Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.

Southwest will offer daily nonstop flights to Indianapolis International Airport.

Last month, Southwest announced that it would end its unique open-seating policy . The airline has not yet said when the assigned seating policy will begin. The airline also plans to offer premium seats with extra legroom.

In February, Southwest will launch a handful of redeye flights, including one between Los Angeles and Nashville.

You Can Buy American Airlines Miles for Up to 35% Off — Here’s How

How many miles you buy affects how big a discount you get.

Planning to redeem miles for your next flight? American Airlines is currently offering a limited-time sale on AAdvantage miles, giving frequent fliers the chance to purchase miles at a discounted rate.

“Discover more places to go with your miles,” the airline wrote about the promotion on its website . “American Airlines offers thousands of flights daily to more than 350 destinations in more than 60 countries.” 

To take advantage of this promotion , travelers must log in with their AAdvantage account, which can be created for free. This ongoing sale offers discounts ranging from 10 to 35 percent, with purchases required in 1,000-point increments: 

• Buy 6,000 to 24,000 miles, get a 10 percent discount
• Buy 25,000 to 79,000 miles, get a 15 percent discount
• Buy 80,000 to 104,000 miles, get a 20 percent discount
• Buy 105,000 to 149,000 miles, get a 25 percent discount
• Buy 150,000 miles, get a 35 percent discount

It’s worth noting that the best possible discount is unlocked upon purchasing 150,000 miles — the maximum amount a member can buy in a calendar year. At this rate, the promotion drops the cost of American miles from 3.7 cents to 2.4 cents apiece. There is currently no specified end date for the promotion.

Point purchase transactions are nonrefundable, and miles will be posted to balances within eight hours of purchase, according to American Airlines . These miles can be redeemed for flights on American and its Oneworld partners, but they are distinct from Loyalty Points , which are used to qualify for elite status. 

American Airlines has one of the top frequent flier programs thanks to affordable mileage redemptions — whether for an economy ticket or premium, lie-flat seats. Just last week, the airline rolled out the ability to earn miles and Loyalty Points on paid upgrades , making those first-class upgrade offers even more appealing.

EL PASO, Texas – Kari Lenander runs migrant shelters in west Texas and New Mexico where every green cot has regularly been filled for years.

Now most of the beds are empty.

Along the U.S.-Mexico border, migrant apprehensions plunged in July from a year ago, to the lowest level of the Biden era, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics provided to USA TODAY.

Migrant crossings  have declined every month for the past five months. The results mark a rare victory on one of the Biden administration's toughest political battlefronts, as Vice President Kamala Harris prepares for next week’s Democratic National Convention. CBP is expected to publicly release the new border data Friday.

"The numbers have indeed decreased and have decreased significantly," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told USA TODAY. "The reason for it is not singular. It is a number of different measures that we and others have taken."

Those measures include the creation of new, lawful pathways for migrants to enter the United States in an orderly way, Mayorkas said; consequences for crossing illegally; tougher restrictions on asylum; and hard-won diplomacy with Mexico, Guatemala, Panama and Colombia as those countries boost their own border enforcement and humanitarian relief programs.

Shifts in U.S. border policy often generate temporary dips in border crossings as migrants wait and see how policies will affect them and smugglers evaluate how to poke holes in the system. Executive orders and other administrative changes can face legal challenges that soften their bite. And Mexico has rarely kept a crackdown going as long as it has this year.

Lenander knows the dips don't usually last.

Her shelter in El Paso is clean and bright . The white walls are decorated with rainbow colors and the flags of many countries. The medical clinic inside is equipped, staffed and waiting. A laundry room with industrial washers and dryers is silent. She switches on the lights to an empty classroom used for immigration orientations.

"It's eerie," she said, of the sudden decline in migration.

The problems that drive people to flee their homeland haven't changed. So where did all the migrants go?

Migration numbers tell a new story

Republicans have spent the years of the Biden administration attacking its "open border" policies. The numbers didn't lie. Migrant encounters broke historical records each of the past three years, topping 2.5 million last year.

At the Republican National Convention in July, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, one of the party's fiercest immigration hawks, promised to keep sending "migrant buses" to "sanctuary cities" – including Chicago – until the Biden-Harris administration secured the border. The crowd cheered.

Republicans haven't shifted their message, but the numbers are telling a new story.

As Harris and Democrats head to Chicago for their convention this weekend, there are no "migrant buses" left, say migrant shelter directors in Texas. The governor's press secretary attributed the decline in crossings to the state's own border security operation and said buses "continue to stage" along the southern border.

"Fewer illegal crossings into Texas means there are fewer buses departing for sanctuary cities," said spokesman Andrew Mahaleris.

But U.S. Customs and Border Protection data showed migrant encounters declined in July, compared with June, in all nine Border Patrol sectors at the Southwest border, from Texas to California.

CBP reported 56,408 migrant encounters between ports of entry in July, down 57% from 132,642 the same month a year ago and down 32% from June.

CBP reported declines across all demographics – single adults, family units, unaccompanied minors – at a time when seasonal migration usually surges.

The number of migrant encounters at ports of entry, via CBP One appointments, also declined in July, year over year: to roughly 38,000 from more than 44,000 in the same month a year ago.

Lenander said her shelter continues to receive migrants, about 100 per day, but the vast majority crossed using the CBP One app. They aren't eligible to ride the Texas "migrant buses," only those who crossed unlawfully, between ports of entry, can board.

El Paso was the last of the governor's bus staging locations, Lenander said. The state staged its final bus, for now, last week.

"The buses have stopped," she said. "Not because Abbott wanted them to stop but because there weren't any people."

Efforts to curb illegal immigration at the border

Across the border from El Paso in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, heavy rain left the Rio Grande channel filled with water on a recent morning. A pair of children's sandals lay abandoned on the riverbank alongside tubes of toothpaste, and an empty can of tuna. The trash left by migrants who came before.

There were hundreds of people and families here earlier this year, waiting for a chance to cut through the curtains of concertina wire laid by the Texas National Guard to turn themselves in to Border Patrol. Now the banks were empty except for a single family huddled in the brush. A woman combed her fingers through a little girl's hair as she slept.

Reducing dangerous crossings between ports of entry has been one of the Biden administration's key goals from the beginning – and the one that has been the hardest to attain.

Early in the administration, Harris famously told migrants, "Do not come," echoing a Border Patrol talking point. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the global social and economic upheaval that followed, migrants ignored her message and came to the U.S. border in massive numbers.

Illegal crossings surged to their highest-ever level in 2023, with more than 300,000 irregular crossings in December alone. The White House backed bipartisan negotiations in Congress aimed at a border security deal .

The resulting Senate bill included funds for hundreds of additional Border Patrol agents and detention capacity. It tightened access to the U.S. asylum system and ended the Border Patrol practice of apprehending migrants and releasing them into the U.S. to pursue their claims.

But it failed after former President Donald Trump bashed it as a " highly sophisticated trap for Republicans ." That was in February. In May, Democratic lawmakers relaunched the bill and it failed again.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration's talks with Mexico and other countries were starting to result in shared enforcement priorities and relief efforts, slowing the flow of migrants through the region. Tens of thousands of people were still bound for the U.S. – but it was becoming harder, and taking longer, to reach the border.

Then, in June, the White House issued an executive order that sharply restricted migrants' ability to claim asylum at the border – essentially closing a path millions of migrants used to enter the United States over the past decade.

The Department of Homeland Security began ramping up deportations and removals from the U.S., too. In July, Mayorkas announced a deal under which the U.S. will pay Panama to deport foreign nationals . The agency also made smaller adjustments, like adding new layers of security to block migrants from making CBP One appointments from outside Mexico.

The reality is that the decline in unlawful border crossings "has lasted longer than other measures in the past," Mayorkas said.

"The smuggling organizations do pivot according to what we do," he said. "However, in this case, it is really a comprehensive suite of measures. I do think that reality is a reason why this has lasted longer."

Every day, Lenander and other shelter directors receive a notification from Border Patrol's El Paso Sector letting them know how many people will be released and how many people need shelter. It used to be in the hundreds.

Nowadays, it's often single digits, she said. Nine migrants on a recent day, or seven.

Under the wire

As the morning sun broke through what remained of the night's storm clouds, the group huddled on the river bank stood up, stretched and walked over to a place where the concertina wire could be lifted like a blanket.

The little girl, in pink shorts and a white T-shirt, crawled up the dirt bank under the sharp wire coils. Three women followed her, and then a man.

The coils rattled and scraped with a metallic sound, like a slinky clinking downstairs. It took less than 10 minutes for the group to wrest itself from the wire. A Texas National Guardsman pulled up in a white, mud-splattered truck and shouted for them to return to Mexico.

Instead, they ran for the U.S. border wall. A few minutes later, a Border Patrol agent arrived. The migrants sat along the fence line, their fate uncertain.

Would they be deported to their country of origin, sent back to Mexico, or released to Lenander's or another shelter?

Without a CBP One appointment, they'd likely be returned.

It's not clear whether the migrants knew about the new rules. Migrants "have a lot of information needs," said Daniel Berlin, International Rescue Committee policy director for protection pathways. "The situation both in Mexico and at the U.S. border is extremely complicated."

"Regardless of what smuggling networks and other channels are saying," he said, "the U.S. border is not open by any stretch. It’s as closed as it has been in a very long time."
