Why use public transit on the tmb, public transit in chamonix.

  • Public Transportation on each Stage
  • Private Transfers & Taxis

There are several reasons you’ll want to take advantage of the ample public transportation on the TMB. You can use it to shorten a long stage, combine multiple stages, save time, save your knees, and access accommodation options off the main trail.

Here are the most common reasons you’ll find yourself on a bus, train, or cable car on the Tour du Mont Blanc:

  • Shorten Stages : Grab a cable car to cut out a steep ascent or descent, grab the train to skip a specific section or hop on a bus to reduce mileage. If you’re worried about the physical demands of a specific stage, there is a good chance you’ll have the ability to shorten the length, reduce the climbing, or avoid part of the descent by utilizing public transit on the route.
  • Combine Stages : Want to see the entire trail but don’t have enough time to hike the entire thing? No problem! Using public transportation you can combine multiple stages into a single day, allowing you to shorten your time on the TMB.
  • Save Time: The sun is starting to set, your feet are screaming, and you are ready to take your pack off and enjoy a meal. It’s guaranteed to happen at least once on the TMB, and often times you’ll have an option to utilize a bus or cable car to save some time and get to your destination sooner.
  • Access Accommodation off the Route : There is no doubt that it is becoming increasingly competitive to secure the most in-demand accommodation on the TMB. If you can’t find a bed in your first choice accommodation, don’t worry, as you’ll likely have an option to use public transit to access other options.

Waiting for the bus in Les Chapieux.

Most TMB hikers will arrive in Chamonix and spend a night or two there before beginning their trek in nearby Les Houches. Chamonix has excellent public transit and best of all, it will most likely be completely FREE as long as you are staying in registered accommodation.

Check out the details on the Chamonix’s bus, trains, and the fantastic Carte d’hôte below:

  • Carte d hôte : The Carte d’hôte or guest card is included as part of the lodging tax levied by your hotel or Airbnb and provides free public transit access in the Chamonix valley. This includes both the bus and the train. Your card includes transit in and between the communes of Servoz and Vallorcine. Be sure to ask your accommodation provider for this when you arrive!
  • Bus : Chamonix has an excellent public bus system that stretches from Le Tour to Les Houches, with many stops in between. This is often the most convenient way to get around the valley, and typically the easiest way to get to the start of the TMB in Les Houches. Rides are € 3 each, unless you have the aforementioned Carte d’hôte.
  • Train : Finally, there is frequent train service up and down the Chamonix Valley as well as to the surrounding region. The ‘Mont Blanc Express’ is a fun and convenient way to get around, and is free with the Carte d’hôte.

Public Transportation on Each Stage of the TMB

Nearly every stage of the Tour du Mont Blanc has some sort of transportation that can aid in your trip. Read on for all the details!

Stage One – Les Houches to Les Contamines

The beginning of the Tour du Mont Blanc starts with a popular shortcut that eliminates a few hours of steep, uphill climbing to reach the Col de Voza by utilizing the Bellevue Cable Car. Additionally, you can save a bit of walking at the end of the stage by utilizing the Les Contamines bus – especially useful if you are heading to one of the refuges past the village.

Check out your options below:

Bellevue Cable Car

The Bellevue Cable Car whisks hikers from the start of the trek in Les Houches to near the top of the climb to the Col de Voza. From here, it’s all downhill to Les Contamines. This is a popular option to save time on your first stage, especially if you are continuing past Les Contamines to Refuge Nant Borrant or Refuge de la Balme.

  • Cost: €17.50 per adult
  • Operating Season (2024): June 8th – September 15th, 8am – 5:30pm
  • Distance saved: 5 km / 675 meters of elevation

Map showing the Bellevue Cable Car on the Tour du Mont Blanc

Les Contamines Bus + Notre Dame de la Gorge Shuttle

Once you descend from Col de Voza into the Montjoie Valley you’ll have access to their excellent free public bus system. The bus route is helpful for two primary uses:

  • If you’re staying at one of the refuges past Les Contamines (Refuge Nant Borrant or Refuge de la Balme)
  • If you want to cut out a bit of Stage 2 and take the shuttle to Notre Dame de la Gorge before continuing on to Les Chapieux.

Outside of that, you can of course use it to simply shorten the end of Stage 1, but it really won’t save you much walking in that case.

Do be aware that the TMB route crosses the main road adjacent to the Tresse bus stop. While it may be tempting to simply wait there for the bus, be warned that this stop does not see frequent service. It is a much better idea to continue on the road to the La Chapelle bus stop , which has a higher frequency of service.

The Google Maps view below shows the La Chapelle bus stop:

Here is the schedule for the Les Contamines bus for Summer 2024:

2024 Timetable for the Notre Dame de la Gorge-Les Contamines navette

Note that this is the same bus that will take you from Les Contamines to Notre Dame de la Gorge. For TMB hikers using that at the start of Stage 2, it is popular to pick up the bus at the tourist office (Chef Lieu bus stop) and ride it to the parking area for Notre Dame de la Gorge, saving approximately 4 km of walking.

  • June 29-September 1
  • From La Chapelle to the centre of Les Contamines: ~2.7 km
  • From the centre of Les Contamines to Notre Dame de la Gorge: ~4 km

Map of the Les Contamines - Notre Dame de la Gorge shuttle bus route.

Stage Two – Les Contamines to Les Chapieux

The Les Contamines to Notre Dame de la Gorge shuttle described above is a popular way to cut out 4 km of this stage. You can pick up the shuttle at the tourist office (or any of the other bus stops in town) and ride it from free to the parking area at the church.

For more details see the description in the previous section.

navette le tour chamonix

Stage Three – Les Chapieux to Rifugio Elisabetta

Stage three has a couple of transit options that are good to know about. The first is the navette (shuttle bus) that runs from Les Chapieux to Les Mottets, and also stops at Ville des Glaciers. This is a popular way to avoid about 5 km of road walking out of Les Chapieux.

In addition, there is a twice-a-day bus that connects Les Chapieux to the nearby town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice. This is helpful for TMB hikers who weren’t able to secure overnight accommodation in Les Chapieux.

Simply hop on the bus in the evening, stay in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, and then take the bus back to pick up the trail in the morning.

Full details for both of these routes are below.

Les Chapieux to Les Mottets Navette

This is likely the most popular public transit/shortcut on the TMB and is utilized by many, if not most, TMB hikers. From Les Chapieux, Stage Three begins with a long walk along the road to La Ville des Glaciers, a small hamlet near the base of the Col de la Seigne.

From here, the trail crosses a river and then continues on a rough track to the start of the climb to the col, near the Refuge des Mottets.

The Les Chapieux navette can elimite one or both of these sections, and saves an hour or so of walking. See the map of the Les Chapieux navette below for more details:

Map of the Les Chapieux - Les Mottets Navette.

The navette leaves from the tourist office in Les Chapieux, with the first bus leaving around 7:30am. There are several busses throughout the morning and they run well into the evening.

  • June 15th – September 15th, 2024
  • From Les Chapieux to La Ville des Glaciers: ~4.5 km
  • From Les Chapieux to Refuge des Mottets: ~6 km

This route is also convenient if you are staying at Refuge des Mottets rather than in Les Chapieux, as you can cut out the last segment of your walk by taking the navette – just be sure you’ve arrived in time to catch the last shuttle at 5:10pm!

The 2024 schedule is shown below:

Les Chapieux Navette Timetable 2024

Here are a few tips if you plan on utilizing the Les Chapieux – Les Mottets Navette:

  • Purchase your tickets the evening before : The first few trips of the day tend to sell out the night prior. As soon as you arrive in Les Chapieux, head to the tourist office building to purchase your tickets.
  • Either the Les Mottets or Ville des Glaciers stop will work : Unless you’re staying at Refuge des Mottets, it is probably easier to get off at Ville des Glaciers. From there you will cross the river and pickup a rocky track that will bring you to the base of the climb to the Col de la Seigne. It is also fine to ride to the Refuge des Mottets as you’ll simply walk a few minutes downhill to the refuge where you can pick up the main TMB.

Refuge des Mottets on the Tour du Mont Blanc.

Les Chapieux – Bourg Saint Maurice Bus

In addition to the popular navette described above, there is also a twice-daily bus connecting Les Chapieux with the town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice. This is helpful for those who were not able to secure accommodation in Les Chapieux, which is becoming increasingly common as the TMB gains popularity.

If that’s the case, you can catch the evening bus from Les Chapieux to Bourg-Saint-Maurice where you will find ample accommodation available. Then, in the morning you’ll pick up the same bus back to Les Chapieux (it picks up in front of the tourist office in Bourg-Saint-Maurice) and start back on the trail. The Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Les Chapieux bus departs before 7am, giving you plenty of time to also take the Les Chapieux navette if you’d like.

Keep in mind that the bus between Les Chapieux and Bourg-Saint-Maurice only runs a few times a day, so if you miss it or don’t feel like waiting around you’ll need to book a taxi. The tourist office in Les Chapieux and Bourg-Saint-Maurice can help you arrange this.

  • June 15th – September 15th, 2024.

Stage Four – Rifugio Elisabetta to Courmayeur

Stage four benefits from a few good public transit and shortcut options. First, there is the option to descend into the Val Veny just past Lac Combal and utilize the La Visaille bus stop to reach Courmayeur or one of the campgrounds in the Valley. There is also the option to eliminate the steep and arduous final descent into Courmayeur by taking advantage of the cable cars in the final section.

Details on both of these options can be found below.

La Visaille – Courmayeur Bus (Orange Route)

The Val Veny bus runs from central Courmayeur to the small hamlet of La Visaille, which is an approximately 40 minute walk down a rough track from the end of Lac Combal, near Cabane du Combal. The main TMB splits here and begins an uphill climb, while the track to La Visaille runs downhill into the valley. It takes approximately an hour to reach the La Visaille bus stop, which you can see below in Google street view:

Using this bus makes sense in a couple of scenarios, which we describe below. However, the section of the Tour du Mont Blanc that this bus allows you to cut out is one of the most spectacular of the entire trek! So we only recommend utilizing this public transit option if you must.

Here are a few reasons you might considers using the Val Veny bus:

  • Bad weather : Should you find yourself facing a big storm, it is best to avoid high elevations and exposed routes. If that is the case on this stage, taking the bus from La Visaille to Courmayeur is a good option.
  • Accommodation options : Accommodation can be a challenge on this stage since there are basically just two options for TMB hikers: Rifugio Elisabetta and Cabane du Combal. If both of those are full, you can continue to La Visaille and take the bus to Courmayeur to spend the night. In the morning , you can simply take it back to the La Visaille stop to pick back up the trail.
  • Camping : There is no legal place to camp near Rifugio Elisabetta. If you’re camping on your TMB , the best option is to take the bus to one of the campgrounds in Val Veny. The next day you can take it back to the trail, hike to Courmayeur, and then return to your campground via the same bus. This is described in detail in our camping guide .
  • Combining stages : If you’re short on time and need to connect directly from Les Chapieux to Courmayeur, the Val Veny bus is a great way to shorten the stage. However, you’ll miss some fabulous scenery!

The route is operated by the transit company Arriva .

  • June 7-September 29, 2024
  • Distance saved: ~ 13km / 500 meters of elevation gain & 1300 meters of elevation loss

NOTE: There are three different timetables for the 2024 hiking season. Each timetable is linked below:

  • June 29- September 1
  • September 2-29

We’ve included the timetable for the “peak” period of July 13th-September 1st below:

Val Veny bus timetable summer 2024

La Maison Vieille Chair life & Dolonne Cable Car

The final section of Stage Four on the Tour du Mont Blanc consists of a knee-busting descent from Rifugio Maison Vieille to Courmayeur. The trail is steep, loose, and tiring to say the least. When we hiked the TMB we combined stages three & four, and the final descent nearly killed us!

Luckily, there is an easy way to cut out this descent if you’d like to save your legs for future stages or simply want to get to town a bit faster.

A combination of the Maison Vieille chair lift and Dolonne cable car will deliver you quickly and easily into the small village of Dolonne, which sits adjacent to Courmayeur.

You’ll first come to the Maison Vieille chair lift, which sits opposite the refuge of the same name. A short ride will bring you down to the mid-station of Plan Chécrouit, where you can catch the Dolonne cable car the rest of the way to the bottom.

  • Cost: €16 for one-way on both Maison Vieille & Dolonne cable cars ( view rates here )
  • June 29-September 1, 2024
  • Distance saved: ~ 5.5 km / 800 meters of descent

Courmayeur Local Bus & Courmayeur-Chamonix connections

Once you’ve arrived in Courmayeur you’ll find excellent local transportation in town via the Courmayeur circular bus route (blue route) operated by Arriva . This route, combined with the Orange Line described above and Green Line described on the next stage make moving around the area simple and enjoyable.

It is also possible to connect back to Chamonix from here, with frequent bus service through the Mont Blanc tunnel available . Several companies provide this service, so be sure to shop around or inquire at the tourist office in Courmayeur.

Of special note for 2024, the Mont Blanc Tunnel will be closed for repairs from September 3rd through December.

Stage Five – Courmayeur to Rifugio Bonatti

Stage Five of the Tour du Mont Blanc takes hikers from the town of Courmayeur to the stunning Rifugio Bonatti. The views of the Grandes Jorasses are incredible, and this is a stage you certainly won’t want to miss!

However, securing accommodation here can often be difficult, with only a few options available on the main route.

To alleviate the accommodation issue, there is a helpful bus service that runs the length of the Val Ferret and lets TMB hikers connect to additional accommodation options on this stage. Check out the details below.

Courmayeur – Arp Nouvaz Bus (Green Route)

The Val Ferret bus connects central Courmayeur with several stops in the Italian Val Ferret, which sits directly below the main TMB route. The final stop along the route, Arp Nouvaz, is also just a short walk from the main TMB near Chalet Val Ferret. Here are the main situations you might find yourself needing to utilize this route:

  • Accommodation options : If Rifugio Bonatti is full, you may want to utilize the bus to reach additional accommodation. The most popular way to do so would be to hike from Courmayeur to Rifugio Bonatti, and then take one of the many link trails down to the valley. From here you can catch the bus back to Courmayeur to spend the night. In the morning, simply take the bus back to the link trail or pick up the route again near the Arp Nouvaz stop.
  • Camping : Camping is not permitted near Rifugio Bonatti or at any other point on this stage. If you want to camp, you’ll need to descend to the valley where there are a few campgrounds available. You can use the bus to get between the link trails and the campgrounds, if needed.

As with the other routes in and around Courmayeur, the Val Ferret/Green Route is operated by Arriva.

  • June 7- September 29, 2024
  • Distance saved: ~ 17km if riding from Courmayeur to the Arp Nouvaz stop.

NOTE: There are four different timetables for the 2024 hiking season. Each timetable is linked below:

  • June 29-July 12
  • July 13-September 1

Outbound timetable for the Val Ferret bus Summer 2024

Stage Six – Rifugio Bonatti to La Fouly

Public transit won’t be super relevant on this stage, although if your timing lines up it is possible to cut out ~45 minutes of hiking at the end of the stage by catching the bus from Ferret to La Fouly. This same bus also allows you to connect to Champex, skipping all of Stage Seven should you desire. However, we’ll touch on that option in the next section.

Here are the details on the Ferret – La Fouly bus:

  • Typically early-July through August
  • Distance saved: ~ 3km

Stage Seven – La Fouly to Champex

Stage Seven is widely considered to be the easiest stage of the Tour du Mont Blanc. With no major passes to climb or ridges to traverse, it is indeed a straightforward day. As such, those with a tight timeframe often opt to skip this stage entirely, utilizing the bus connection between La Fouly and Champex to cut this stage from their itinerary.

Doing so is relatively easy, as there is a single bus stop in La Fouly, making it hard to miss. This bus will take you to the town of Orsières, just a 30 minute ride from La Fouly. Here, you’ll need to change to the bus that connects to Champex. The bus arrives and departs in front of the train station in Orsières.

To help plan your trip and view timetables, you can use the SBB (Swiss Public Transit Agency) trip planner.

  • Year-round connections available

Map of the bus route between La fouly and Champex-Lac.

Stage Eight – Champex to Col de la Forclaz

Although it is possible to use public transit to skip this stage entirely, the most common use on Stage Eight to find additional accommodations should both Hotel Col de la Forclaz as well as all accommodation in Trient and Le Peuty be fully booked.

In that case, it is possible to take the #213 Postbus from Col de la Forclaz into Martigny, where you will find additional accommodations, and then back again in the morning to pick up the trail.

The bus also heads the other direction and often takes hikers down the last segment of trail between Col de la Forclaz and Trient/Le Peuty. From there, it continues on to Le Châtelard where you can catch the train to Vallorcine and then onwards to Chamonix.

navette le tour chamonix

Stage Nine – Col de la Forclaz to Tré-le-Champ

From Col de la Forclaz to Tré-le-Champ there are a few public transit options that can help you shorten Stage Nine as well as options at the end of the stage to expand your accommodation options.

Read on for full details on public transit availability on Stage Nine of the Tour du Mont Blanc.

Col de la Forclaz – Trient Bus

The first option to reduce the length of this stage is to utilize the bus mentioned in the stage above to bring you from Col de la Forclaz down to Trient where you can pick up the trail as it begins its ascent to Col de Balme. This will save you maybe an hour of downhill walking and won’t be worth it for most hikers.

Balme(Autannes) – Charamillon – Le Tour Chairlift to Le Tour

Upon reaching the Col de Balme and crossing back into France from Switzerland you’ll have the option to use convenient chairlifts to reduce or eliminate your descent into the valley. The main TMB route stays high and then descends down to Tré-le-Champ on a trail adjacent to the ski area.

However, you can also reach Tré-le-Champ or other accommodations in the valley by taking two chairlifts (the Autannes and Charamillon lifts) down to the ski village of Le Tour. From here, you can connect to Tré-le-Champ as well as use public transit to get to Argentiere where you’ll find additional accommodations available.

  • Cost: €18 one way per adult
  • June 8th – September 8th, 2024
  • Distance saved: ~ 3.5 km

Map of chairlifts connecting Col de Balme to Le Tour on the Tour du Mont Blanc.

Additional Public Transit on Stage Nine

At this point in your trek, you will have returned to the Chamonix Valley and its abundant public transportation. This includes both the bus and train that connect many stops in the area. On Stage 9, this will allow you to find alternative accommodation, services, or simply shorten your hike by finishing and transferring to Chamonix.

For more details, read our Public Transit in Chamonix section .

Stage 10 – Tré-le-Champ to Refuge de la Flégère

There are no public transit shortcuts on Stage 10 of the TMB, however you can utilize the Flégère Cable Car to connect directly to the refuge of the same name, or to descend to the valley upon completing the hike if you were not able to secure accommodation at any of the refuges on this stage.

Flégère Cable Car

This gondola departs directly next to Refuge la Flégère and ends in the village of Les Praz. From there, it’s possible to take a bus or taxi back to Chamonix. This is a good option if you need to cut out the final day of the TMB, or if you want to hike in reverse and avoid the long, long climb out of Les Houches. You could also take the cable car down into Les Praz for more accommodation and services at this stage, and then take it back up the next morning to continue your trek.

  • Cost: €17.50 one way per adult
  • June 8th – September 22nd, 2024

Map of the Flégère cable car connecting Refuge de la Flégère and Les Praz.

Stage 11 – Refuge de la Flégère to Les Houches

The final stage of the Tour du Mont Blanc is a spectacular one, with stunning views across the valley towards Mont Blanc. However, the final descent in Les Houches can be daunting, with kilometer after kilometer of knee busting downhill. It should be manageable for most hikers, but if your legs have had enough at the end of your trip, you can always take the cable car down to Chamonix.

Find details on exactly how to do that below.

Le Brévent-Planpraz-Chamonix Cable Car

Approximately 7.5 km into the final stage you will reach the high point for the day, near the summer hamlet of Le Brévent. From here, it’s another 9.5 km of downhill hiking to reach Les Houches.

Luckily, you’re also just steps from the Le Brévent cable car, which can whisk you down into Chamonix.

You’ll first ride the Brévent cable car to the mid-station at Planpraz, where you’ll then take the Planpraz cable car the rest of the way down into Chamonix. From here, simply walk into town and toast to your accomplishment!

  • Cost: €18 one way per adult (To/from Planpraz), €29 one way per adult (To/from Brévent),
  • June 15 – September 15, 2024
  • Distance saved: 9.5km & 1500 meters of descent

Map of the Le Brévent and Plan Praz cable cars.

Hi thanks for the great post, very helpful. What happened to the comment about the 18:10 shuttle from Les Chapieux to Bourg-Saint-Maurice? Just wanted to confirm that the shuttle is still running.

Hi Korey, To the best of our knowledge, it should be running through September 8th. Thanks!

Ticket journée : 3€;

Un voyage Chamo'nuit : 2€.

Not every hiker needs a shortcut, but let’s face it…hiking 3,000 ft downhill at the end of a long day isn’t awesome for everyone.

Morgan’s Video of The first TMB shortcut (Bellevue)

Trust me, having an out with gondolas or buses and other options make a huge difference in your hiking experience. ➡️ Plus it’s not always an option to do the trail as intended due to lack of beds at refuges.

TMB Shortcut Summary

navette le tour chamonix

The gondolas and public transportation on the TMB can help you shorten stages, combine stages, save time, save your knees, and access accommodation options off the main trail.

You’ll learn about the public transportation options available in Chamonix and on each stage of the hike.

Additionally, we’ll discuss private transfers and taxis as alternative transportation options.

  • Most Tour du Mont Blanc transportation options are only available during peak periods in July and August.
  • Below are the timetables for Summer 2023.
  • I will update the timetables for the 2024 summer season as soon as they become available, usually in mid-June.
  • Use the 2023 timetables as a reference for the frequency of transportation in 2024, as they are typically very similar.
  • Be aware of public transport and exit points along the trail in case of sickness, mild injury, or bad weather.
  • Having an exit strategy can provide peace of mind and help ensure your safety during your TMB hike.

By utilizing public transit, you can save time and energy and enjoy a more comfortable experience.

Help Booking

navette le tour chamonix

I’ve done both DIY planning and using a service for self-guided treks. Both have their pros and cons. I want to share my favorite companies if you’d rather pay someone to book your accommodations and provide detailed GPS routes, deal with the huts and make it simple.

Final Verdict: Ways to Book a Hut to Hut Hiking Trip

Self-Guided Tour Planning Service

Self-Guided Tour Planning Service

  • [Self-Guided] - You're on your own once you start
  • Must book in Oct to Jan of year prior to hike
  • Fully done for you route
  • Service finds and books your huts
  • Maps provided on app

What we liked: The logistics of the TMB and other hut to hut hikes can be very daunting, especially if you don't speak Italian and French.

Note: Lesser known trails are often easier to book.

  • Ease of route
  • No finding or dealing with huts
  • Tapping into expertise
  • No waiting for slow hikers
  • No feeling rushed if you're slower
  • Less control of dates
  • No guide on the trail
  • Unknown - you didn't "plan"

Guided Group Tour : 4 Days

Guided Group Tour : 4 Days

  • small groups (<10 typically)
  • local Chamonix guides
  • all transfers/breakfast/dinner/accommodations included
  • airport transfer included
  • stay in the insanely beautiful Rifugio Bonatti and other huts at high elevation

What we liked:   Designed for busy people that want to experience the highlights of the Tour du Mont Blanc without having to take 2 weeks of their precious vacation time.  Everything is done-for-you and you can show up and relax in the most stunning mountains.

Note: The standard price includes shared rooms in the huts.

  • All transfers included
  • Best price for a guided trip
  • Local Chamonix Guides
  • At the mercy of group pace
  • Not the full circuit

DIY: Book Your Own Huts

DIY: Book Your Own Huts

  • Cheapest Option
  • Most Freedom
  • Take side excursions as you like

What we liked: The challenge of it.  It's so fun to route plan, find trails and the huts you want.  Often it's not the expense saved, but the learning of the trail while planning that is satisfying.

Note: Be prepared to spend some time with spreadsheets and wait weeks for replies from hut owners.  BONUS:  Click on the link to watch my 10 part video series on HOW to book a hut to hut trip.  It's a Dolomites hut trip but it's basically the same process for TMB.

  • Cheapest option
  • Most freedom
  • Learn the Trail by planning
  • You must be organized
  • Map skills are essential

Camping

  • campgrounds can be crowded
  • reservations often needed in advance
  • Wild camping is prohibited or limited by elevation

Not really my favorite thing for hut to hut trails in Europe. The huts are quite often the best part of the hiking trip and the rules are so complicated about wild camping.

  • Price is good
  • More Flexibilty
  • Wild camping is tricky
  • Rules change
  • harder and heavier pack

Are the TMB Trek Shortcuts Worth it?

Not everyone needs tmb shortcuts. but they are good for 👎🏻.

  • 🥾 Hikers with some knee issues
  • ⊲ Groups with varying abilities
  • 🌏 Fastpackers Doing the TMB in a few days
  • 💗 Hikers that enjoy the journey more than the destination

Below is my list of the shortcuts that will help you conquer the TMB. Let’s get to it.

Why Use Public Transit on the TMB?

If you’re planning on hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB), you’ll find ample public transportation options along the way. Here are some of the most common reasons you’ll want to take advantage of public transit on the TMB:

  • Shorten Stages : If you’re worried about the physical demands of a specific stage or simply want to reduce mileage, public transportation can help. You can grab a cable car to cut out a steep ascent or descent, take the train to skip a specific section, or hop on a bus to shorten the length of a stage.
  • Combine Stages : If you’re short on time but still want to experience the entire trail, public transportation allows you to combine multiple stages into a single day. This can help you see more of the TMB in less time.
  • Save Time : Sometimes, you just need to save time. Whether you’re running behind schedule or your feet are screaming, public transit can help you get to your destination sooner. You can utilize a bus or cable car to save some time and get to your next stop faster.
  • Access Accommodation off the Route : Accommodation on the TMB can be competitive, and it’s not always easy to find a bed in your first choice accommodation. Public transit can help you access additional options, allowing you to find a place to stay even if your first choice is fully booked.

For example, if you’re struggling to find accommodation in Les Chapieux, you can always use the public bus to find additional options.

Public Transit in Chamonix

As a TMB hiker, you will most likely arrive in Chamonix and spend a night or two there before beginning your trek in nearby Les Houches. Luckily, Chamonix has excellent public transit, and best of all, it will most likely be completely free as long as you are staying in registered accommodation.

Getting Around Chamonix

  • Chamonix has excellent public transit that is free with a Carte d’hôte provided by your accommodation.
  • The Carte d’hôte provides free access to public transit in the Chamonix valley, including buses and trains.
  • The public bus system is convenient and stretches from Le Tour to Les Houches, with rides costing €3 each without the Carte d’hôte.
  • The Mont Blanc Express train is a fun and convenient way to get around, and it is also free with the Carte d’hôte.
  • Be sure to ask your accommodation provider for the Carte d’hôte when you arrive in Chamonix.

By TMB Stage

1. les houches to les contamines.

The Col du Tricot variant is the shiz. You get to cross over the Nepalese style bridge and eat lunch at Refuge Miage. You’ll want to take the Bellevue lift .

The Montjoie Valley’s free public bus system is a great resource for hikers on the Tour du Mont Blanc. The Les Contamines bus is particularly helpful for two purposes: reaching refuges past Les Contamines like Refuge Nant Borrant or Refuge de la Balme, and taking the shuttle to Notre Dame de la Gorge to shorten Stage 2 before continuing to Les Chapieux.

However, hikers should note that waiting at the Tresse bus stop may not be the best option, as it does not see frequent service. Instead, they should continue to the La Chapelle bus stop, which has a higher frequency of service and is a better choice for those looking to shorten the end of Stage 1.

2. Les Contamines to Les Chapieux

Start of stage 2: It’s flat and boring so you can skip the first 4 km along the stream.

The Les Contamines to Notre Dame de la Gorge shuttle: catch it at the tourist office or any other bus stop in town for free, ride it to the parking area near the church, cutting out approximately 4 km of walking.

3. Stage Three – Les Chapieux to Rifugio Combal

This is one of the best places to use public transportation. We were lucky enough to be able to get a room in Bonhomme and use the Col des Fours variant and skip all that.

Stage three of the Tour du Mont Blanc offers a few transportation options that can be useful for hikers. The first is a navette or shuttle bus that runs from Les Chapieux to Les Mottets, stopping at Ville des Glaciers as well. This is a popular way to avoid approximately 5 km of road walking out of Les Chapieux.

Additionally, there is a twice-a-day bus that connects Les Chapieux to the nearby town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice. This can be helpful for TMB hikers who were unable to secure overnight accommodation in Les Chapieux. By taking the bus in the evening and staying in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, hikers can easily return to pick up the trail in the morning.

Click here for Les Chapieux information .

Stage 3 Option 1: Skip the Boring Road

The Les Chapieux to Les Mottets Navette is one of the most popular public transit options and shortcuts on the Tour du Mont Blanc, used by many hikers.

Stage Three of the TMB starts with a lengthy walk along the road from Les Chapieux to La Ville des Glaciers, a small hamlet near the base of the Col de la Seigne. After crossing a river, the trail continues on a rough track to the start of the climb to the col, near the Refuge des Mottets.

If you’re staying at Refuge des Mottets instead of Les Chapieux, taking the navette can be a convenient way to cut out the final segment of your walk. Just make sure to catch the last shuttle at 5:35pm.

  • Purchase your tickets the evening before to avoid sellouts.
  • Head to the tourist office building in Les Chapieux to purchase your tickets.
  • Either the Les Mottets or Ville des Glaciers stop will work.
  • It’s easier to get off at Ville des Glaciers unless you’re staying at Refuge des Mottets.
  • Cross the river from Ville des Glaciers and pick up a rocky track to the base of the climb to the Col de la Seigne.
  • Riding to Refuge des Mottets is also fine, as you’ll simply walk downhill for a few minutes to the refuge where you can pick up the main TMB.

Stage 3 Option 2: Les Chapieux – Bourg Saint Maurice Bus

Good for people locked out of Les Chapieux accomodations. There’s a twice-daily bus connecting Les Chapieux with the town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

Stage 3 Option 3: Taxi

If you miss the twice-daily Les Chapieux to Bourg Saint Maurice bus or don’t want to wait, you can book a taxi through www.taxi-montblanc.com or the tourist office in Les Chapieux or Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

This can be a useful option for hikers who were unable to secure accommodation in Les Chapieux and need to reach Bourg-Saint-Maurice for the night. The cost of the taxi may vary depending on the distance and other factors.

In June and September, you can pre-book a taxi from Les Chapieux to Bourg St Maurice, which takes about 20 minutes by car. However, places are limited, so be sure to book in advance and expect to pay the driver.

Here are some taxi options:

  • Taxi Besson: 00 33 (0) 4 50 93 62 07, http://www.taxi-montblanc.com
  • Taxi Gé: 06 13 63 39 42
  • Taxi Aarthur: https://www.taxibourgsaintmaurice.com

The cost is around 60 euros from Chapieux to Bourg St Maurice and 75 euros from Bourg to Ville des Glaciers the following morning. Taking the taxi from Bourg to Ville des Glaciers is recommended, as this is where the shuttle bus from Les Chapieux drops off. It saves about 1.5 hours of walking.

4. Rifugio Combal to Courmayeur

Stage four of the Tour du Mont Blanc offers several useful public transit and shortcut options. One option is to descend into the Val Veny just beyond Lac Combal and use the La Visaille bus stop to reach Courmayeur or one of the campgrounds in the valley. Bus schedule here .

Gondola option is to avoid the steep and challenging final descent into Courmayeur by taking advantage of the cable cars in the last section of the stage. Bus info here.

Stage 4 Option 1: Bus

Try not to skip this section if possible. (It’s gorgeous)

Stage 4 Option 2: Dolonne Gondola

Take your time at Maison Vielle and get a little drunk watching cows. It’s a vibey place and then take the gondola down and go take an afternoon nap in your luxury Courmayeur hotel.

Gondola info here.

Courmayeur Bus : There’s a Tunnel Between Les Houches & Courmayeur

Courmayeur offers excellent local transportation through the Courmayeur circular bus route (blue route) operated by Arriva, which, combined with the Orange Line described above and Green Line on the next stage, makes moving around the area simple and enjoyable.

If you need to connect back to Chamonix, frequent bus service is available through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Several companies provide this service, so it’s best to shop around or inquire at the tourist office in Courmayeur.

If you’re only trekking half of the Tour du Mont Blanc, you can catch a bus through the Mont Blanc tunnel back to Chamonix from here.

Several bus companies offer this service, with a travel time of about 45 minutes to Chamonix. SAVDA buses depart at 9h, 11h, 12h, 14h, 16h & 18h, with a one-way cost of €15.

Click here for Courmayeur to Chamonix Bus Schedule .

Flixbus also offers affordable options, with deals as low as €5. Download their app to check their timetables.

5. Courmayeur to Rifugio Bonatti

Is this the prettiest part of the hike? Maybe. So don’t skip it!

This is for people who cannot get a room at Rifugio Bonatti or Elena (or the hotels in Lavachey). Basically you’ll do the hike to Bonatti, walk down to the valley and take bus back to Courmayeur for the night. Take bus back and start where you left off.

Bus No 5  from Place Le Monte Bianco runs along the valley floor of Val Ferret and can drop you at stop “Bivio Refugio Bonatti’.

6. Rifugio Bonatti to La Fouly

Not much to skip here. Here’s the Swiss bus info .

7. La Fouly to Champex

This is the section to skip if you’re on a timeline.

Travel Details? How to Get to the TMB?

The closest airport to the TMB is Geneva. Tip: Zurich is famous for losing luggage. I wouldn’t bring my expensive trekking poles on the plane because they get trashed or confiscated. Watch video here . Just go to Decathlon or another store in Chamonix and get a cheap pair and leave it for the next trekker.

✈️ Need cheap flight tickets for your trip? Consider choosing WayAway for these aims. WayAway is a flight aggregator that provides travelers with the best rates on airline tickets. Use the form below and buy cheap flights!

8. Champex to Col de la Forclaz

Not really helpful for most people. This is for people that can’t get a bed at Hotel Col de la Forclaz as well as all accommodation in Trient and Le Peuty are fully booked.

9. Col de la Forclaz to Trés-le-Champ

A few options here:

10. Tré-le-Champ to Refuge de la Flégère

Stage 10 of the TMB does not offer any shortcuts.

The gondola from Refuge la Flégère to Les Praz is a convenient option for hikers who want to cut out the final day of the TMB or avoid the long climb out of Les Houches by hiking in reverse. It’s also a good choice if you want to stay in Les Praz for more accommodation and services at this stage, and take the gondola back up the next morning to continue your trek.

The gondola departs directly next to Refuge la Flégère and ends in the village of Les Praz, from where you can take a bus or taxi back to Chamonix. The cost is €17.50 one way per adult, and the operating season is from June 10th to September 17th. Note that this option does not save any distance on the trail.

11. La Flégère – Les Houches

The final stage of the Tour du Mont Blanc offers breathtaking views of Mont Blanc, but the long descent in Les Houches can be tough on your knees. If you need a break, you can take the cable car down to Chamonix instead.

To do so, head to Le Brévent, which is approximately 7.5 km into the final stage. From there, you’re just steps away from the Le Brévent cable car that can take you down to Chamonix. First, you’ll ride the Brévent cable car to the mid-station at Planpraz. Then, take the Planpraz cable car the rest of the way down into Chamonix. From there, it’s just a short walk into town to celebrate your accomplishment!

Note that the final descent to Les Houches is approximately 9.5 km from Le Brévent. The cable car can be a convenient option if your legs are tired or if you want to save time.

Brevent Cable Car

Le parc merlot navette, wrap up: tmb shortcuts.

The Tour du Mont Blanc offers numerous gondolas and buses that can help hikers save time and energy, especially during the long and challenging stages. Some of the most important gondolas and shortcuts include the Bellevue cable car to get to the Col du Tricot variant, La Flégère cable car, which can take hikers down to Les Praz and back up to continue the trek, and the Brévent cable car, which can cut out the Col du Brévent climb and save approximately 2 hours of trail time.

Another notable shortcut is the Le Parc Merlot navette, a regular bus service that runs from Merlot animal park to Les Houches on weekdays, which can save hikers from the long descent after the Brévent stage.

These gondolas and shortcuts can be a great option for hikers who want to customize their itinerary or need a break from the challenging terrain or harsh weather.

Need Help Planning Your TMB?

The fact I’ve had to write an article about this makes it a hard thing to do. It’s not a walk in the park to plan a TMB trek. I’ve done both my own DIY planning and paying a service to do it.

It’s up to you.

I want to share my favorite company if you’d rather pay someone to book your accommodations and provide details GPS plans.

Tour du Mont Blanc Hike

Tour du Mont Blanc is a challenging circuit that spans across three countries, Switzerland, Italy, and France. It is approximately 105 miles long and can take up to 11 days to complete.

This firm is great for finding secluded variants (like the one by the La Gorge gondola), private rooms, and providing maps. They have multiple ways to hike the TMB from a short 4 day to 11 days and everything in between. You can also arrange higher levels of "comfort", i.e. private rooms.

Tour du Mont Blanc Hike

FAMILY FRIENDLY HALF TMB TOUR - 6 DAYS AGE 8+

This family Tour du Mont Blanc 6 day itinerary follows the TMB trail from France into Italy and splits the trail into bite size chunks more manageable for little legs. Starting in Les Houches this itinerary follows the entire first half of the Tour du Mont Blanc from Chamonix to Courmayeur.

You’ll stay overnight in 5 mountain huts before arriving in the Italian town of Courmayeur where you can stay another night, or return straight back to Chamonix via bus through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Arguably the best sections of the tour, these 6 days will take you over wild and desolate Col du Bonhomme, Col du Croix du Bonhomme and over Col de la Seigne into Italy.

This itinerary is perfect for families with a week to spare with younger children who can’t manage long days on the trail. I’ve cut up the days into achievable sections with each day taking between 4-6 hours on average depending on the age and strength of your children.

We would recommend this itinerary for children aged 8 and over who have hiking experience and love being outdoors. There are some short cuts that you can take to ease tired legs.

WARNING: this family friendly Tour du Mont Blanc itinerary is still tough. The days have been split into shorter chunks but your children still need to be good hikers and need to train to be ready for the the long, consecutive days with serious high elevation gain and loss. I would recommend at least doing a weekend of two consecutive hiking days on hills to prepare for this trek. ALWAYS leave early at 8am to get a good head start and give yourself lots of time. With an average of 4 – 6 hours of hiking each day this means you can have a leisurely lunch en route and will arrive at your refuge mid afternoon with plenty of time to relax.

Family friendly TMB – 6 days – Complete half TMB trek France – Italy

Start point: Les Houches , France            End point: Courmayeur, Italy           Length: 6 days

  • Day 1 Les Houches via Col du Tricot – Refuge Miage /Auberge du Truc
  • Day 2 Refuge Miage – Val Montjoie
  • Day 3 Val Montjoie – Refuge Croix du Bonhomme
  • Day 4 Ref Croix du Bonhomme – Refuge Les Mottets
  • Day 5 Refuge Les Mottets – Val Veny

Day 6 Val Veny – Courmayeur

  • Return to Chamonix via bus through the Mont Blanc tunnel

Start point: Les Houches, France (1.15hr from Geneva Airport)

Les Houches is the first village in the Chamonix Valley so you can either stay in central Chamonix or Les Houches (a 15 minute bus ride from Chamonix) the night before you start your trek.

If you’re arriving from Geneva Airport you can get a direct mini bus transfer to Les Houches which takes around an hour and 15 minutes.

timings, distances, elevation

The timings for this itinerary have been given for adults and a separate timing for children. This is because many adults enquire with me about this itinerary who just want to take shorter stages but who are not hiking with children. Obviously the timings for children is approximate and will depend on the age, strength and experience of your child. I have given the maximum amount I estimate it will take for a child of 8 years old to hike.

Note: timings for this itinerary is approximate and is non-stop, meaning you should add extra time for stopping to take photos, rest stops and your lunch break. This is even more important when hiking with children. Expect this to always be more than you imagine. Consider adding 2 hours onto your timings per day (for a full day). Remember it’s best to set off early and arrive early – thunderstorms commonly occur around 4pm each afternoon in the peak summer months on the TMB trail.

Distance & elevation is approximate. As I have given several accommodation options at the end of each day this might be slightly shorter or longer depending on which accommodation option you choose but it gives you a general idea. For example the first day distance is measured from the official start arch way in Les Houches to Auberge du Truc which is the second refuge option that night. If you are booking a self guided trek then the exact timings/distances/elevation will be given to you on finalisation of your exact itinerary once your accommodation has been booked.

Chairlifts, cable cars and shuttle buses (navettes) that operate along the Tour du Mont Blanc often only open in high season. If you hope to take these welcome lifts to help tired legs or cut tour times then aim to trek in July and August and always check timetables before setting off. You can read my short cut/transport options post here which will be updated every year before the trail opens on 14 June.

you can cut the last day off this itinerary

NEED TO LEAVE EARLY? There is a quick route to Courmayeur if your children are too tired or you simply want to cut this itinerary down to five days instead of six. From Cabane Combal keep left along the tarmac road and follow it 50-60 minutes to take the first bus stop at Visaille. It takes around half an hour on the bus to Courmayeur. The bus goes all the way to Place le Monte Bianco which is where you’d pick up the bus back to Chamonix.

navette le tour chamonix

NOTE: this itinerary follows the variant route over the Col du Tricot. It’s a gentle climb up to Col du Tricot so this route is not especially difficult but note it should never be done in bad weather. There is no shelter and the Col du Tricot is very exposed. You would not want to be there in a lightning storm! The descent to Refuge Miage is very steep which is fine in good weather but not when slippery and wet.

navette le tour chamonix

Day 1 Les Houches – Refuge Miage/Auberge du Truc

1445m up / 740m down / 14.7km / 5-6hrs (stats from valley floor), the timings above are this trail section withou t short cuts, walking from les houches to auberge du truc., if you are trekking with kids i would definitely take the bellevue cable car which cuts off the whole ascent. make sure to trek within the dates for the bellevue cable car (early june – early sept)..

Route overview:

Take the Bellevue cable car in Les Houches up to the Bellevue Plateau. It’s then just a 15 minute walk (very well signposted) to the Col du Voza. Cross the railway tracks and follow the path for Col du Tricot. Crossing the Himalayan suspension bridge is fun for all but especially for kids. After the bridge the route begins to gently climb until the spectacular Bionnassay glacier comes into full view. This is a great spot to have lunch – if you look carefully you’ll see wild bilberry bushes everywhere. From here you can see the top of the Col du Tricot and it’s a steady climb up to the grassy saddle.

Spend some time at the top to admire the views over the Miage Valley and over to the Col du Bonhomme. You can see Refuge Miage far down below in the valley. If you look carefully to your left, you’ll see a stone archway on the ‘smugglers route’ to Refuge Plan Glacier (see our adventure itinerary). Don’t allow your children to explore it as the cliff down in sheer and a fall could well be fatal.

The descent down to Refuge Miage is STEEP! Take it easy and use your poles.

Reaching the valley floor follow the signs to reach Refuge Miage in just 5 minutes. This cluster of farm buildings in set in an idyllic rural setting and is charmingly French. Refuge Miage is a good place to stay as a family as children receive a discounted price (not the case in high mountain refuges). You can even book tiny chalets around the refuge which are perfect for a family of four. The view of the Dômes de Miage (3600m) from the refuge is outstanding.

Alternatively you may stay at Auberge du Truc which is between 45-60 minutes further along the trail. Departing the Refuge Miage you’ll have an initial short climb from the Miage Valley up and over to Auberge du Truc. Just before here on the left is a ‘pointe du navigation’ which shows the names of each of the peaks you can see.

accommodation on your first night

Accommodation on your first night will either be in Refuge Miage or the next refuge, Auberge du Truc. Refuge Miage does have private rooms so if this is something you’d definitely want then please book early with us (recommended the September before your trek)

navette le tour chamonix

Day 2 Refuge Miage/Auberge du Truc – Val Montjoie

316m up / 578m down / 8.7km / 2-3hrs.

From Auberge du Truc it’s a long steady descent through the forest into Les Contamines. Have a leisurely lunch in this small French town before either choosing to walk along the river to Notre Dame de la Gorge or pick up the free shuttle bus ( navette ) outside the Tourist Office to Notre Dame de la Gorge where the trail heads out into the wild once more. Take a moment to visit the beautiful Notre Dame de la Gorge chapel next to the gushing water before setting out on the well marked path. Warning – the trail is VERY steep here along an ancient slabbed Roman road to Refuge Nant Borrant but pleasantly flanks the bubbling racing gorge for much of the ascent. Be sure to look out for the pont naturel sign leading to a natural arch on the river, just a minute from the trail. Cross the roman bridge to take in the rushing gorge below. Expect to hike for around just over an hour from the church to reach the refuge.

accommodation on your second night

Accommodation on your second night will be in Val Montjoie, the valley of Les Contamines. Ideally this will be Refuge Nant Borrant however this is a small refuge that gets booked up fast (particularly since Rick Steves stayed here). Alternative accommodation could be Gite Le Pontets, Refuge Le Balme, Refuge Des Pres.

navette le tour chamonix

Day 3 Val Montjoie – Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme

1048m up / 60m down / 8.2km / 3-4hrs.

Today you’ll make the climb over two mountain passes, Col du Bonhomme (2329m) and Col de la Croix du Bonhomme (2483m) where early in the season (late June – end of July) you can expect to cross snow patches.

You’ll stay in the cavernous Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme (2433m), a high mountain refuge with epic views. The dorms and private rooms have been renovated to a good standard and we love that dinner is fantastically atmospheric being served in candlelight to save electricity. The food, admittedly, is not the best on the Tour, (especially the soup) but if you soak up the exceptional location, breathe in the grandeur of the mountains, and accept that this is the most adventurous refuge you’ll stay in during this 6 day family TMB trek, you’ll embrace it warts and all.

trail du mont blanc

Day 4 Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme – Refuge Les Mottets

350m up / 928m down / 11.1km / 2-3hrs.

From Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme it’s pretty much all down hill today. If the weather is fine, and your kids are in good shape after the previous day, consider taking the alternative route from the refuge via the Col des Fours. Experience lunar landscape & rushing waterfalls on this variant route as well as the option of detouring to the Tête Nord des Fours summit – only a further 20 minutes (follow the cairns) which gives one of the best views of the Tour du Mont Blanc – highly recommended. Note: Never attempt this variant route if the weather is nothing short of perfect. The Col des Fours variant bypasses the hamlet of Les Chapieux completely and is actually shorter than taking the traditional route via Les Chapieux however is you want to catch the shuttle bus to ease tired legs if needed, this can only be done from Les Chapieux.

If you’re continuing along the normal TMB route, the well marked trail will descend all the way to the valley of to Les Chapieux where you can stop for a welcome refreshment at the friendly Auberge de la Nova which is more like a hotel (with a great beer garden outside). Then you would need to carry on a further 1.5 hours up the trail to Refuge Les Mottets. This would be the full 11.8km. Or as we would suggest catch the navette (shuttle bus) from Les Chapieux which ferries you in 30 minutes to the parking area of Refuge Les Mottets (you’ll then have to descend down to Refuge Mottets which is a further 5-10 minute descent down on the valley floor. You can choose to get the shuttle bus only as far as Ville des Glaciers – do this is you want to visit the cheese farm – you would then either cross the bridge and walk up the gentle gradient following the TMB trail before descending down the hillside to the Refuge Mottets in the valley bottom or you can walk up the road to the Refuge Mottets parking and then descend down to the refuge. The timetable below (2023) will give you an idea of how often the shuttle bus runs. In 2023 the price was €4 per person with under 12’s going for free.

navette le tour chamonix

Day 5 Refuge Mottets – Val Veny (Italy)

687m up / 367m down / 7.9km / 2-3hrs.

Today you’ll say ‘au revoir’ to France and trek over the Col de la Seigne into Italy. Ciao!

From Refuge Les Mottets roll out of bed fresh to tackle the immediate 646m steady climb up the Col de la Seigne up to the French – Italian frontiére. From here Mont Blanc comes fabulously back into view with her surrounding peaks dropping off dramatically into an astonishing deep trough like valley. So spectacular are these jagged peaks that over the next two days you will find it hard to tear your eyes away from the incredible vistas to your left.

It’s an easy descent down from the Col de la Seigne to Refugio Elisabetta, tucked in on a spur between Glacier d’Estellette and Glacier de la Lée Blanche. Your bed for the night will either be here or at Cabane Combal, a further hour along the arrow straight roman road to the highly instagrammable A frame refuge Cabane Combal.

For those staying at Cabane Combal keen for an evening stroll, take the trail behind the refuge to scramble up to the glacier lake, Lac Miage, nestled in the moraine of the Miage Glacier.

Should you be mildly injured, not feeling well, in the case of severe weather or perhaps you have not been able to secure accommodation in Val Veny – there is an exit point from the trail at the bridge just before Cabane Combal. Turn right after crossing the bridge & walk down the Cabane Combal access road to the village of La Visaille. It takes between 45-60 minutes to descend. There is a free bus that runs from La Visaille to Courmayeur in July & August. The bus stop is immediately on the right after crossing the last bridge. If you are not hiking in July or August you can call a taxi to meet you at the bus stop. (there is a barrier across the access road so no traffic can drive up to Cabane Combal).

accommodation on day 5

Accommodation will either be in Refugio Elisabetta or one hour further at Cabane Combal.

lago Combal

540m up / 1532m down / 15.7km / 4-5hrs

Your final day trekking takes you up out of the valley floor climbing steadily up to the highest point of the day, a spur from Mont Favre. Looking back you can see the monstrous moraine of Glacier Miage dwarfing Cabane Combal and on a clear day all the way back to Col de la Seigne. From here you’ll trace the contours of the south flank of the Val Veni, following the rise and fall of the mountain side with jaw dropping views of sawtooth peaks and Monte Bianco opposite.

It’s a challenging day and so we highly recommend you to take the chair lift and connecting cable car from Refuge Maison Vielle down to Dolonne, Courmayeur. Our timing has reflected this welcome short cut plus know that the descent is painfully jarring. We would not recommend finishing your day by attempting this with tired children!

Catching the bus back through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Chamonix:

It’s easy to catch the bus from Courmayeur in Italy back to Chamonix in France. There is a direct tunnel that connects both towns via an underground tunnel – the Mont Blanc tunnel.

Flixbus and SAVDA are the main operators. You must have an ID card or passport with you to travel.

SAVDA operates the line 300 bus runs every 4 hours from Place le Monte Bianco in Courmayeur to the bus station in Chamonix. The cost is €15.00 one way. You need to book before 5pm the day before travel. You can see their timetable here .

SAVDA – email: [email protected] tel: +39 0165 36 70 11

Flixbus fares start from €4.99 so are much cheaper than SAVDA but takes double the time (1.30hr versus SAVDA’s 45 mins). Book Flixbus online or easily through their app ( Flixbus app for android ) ( Flixbus app for iOS )
