Starlink Hardware

Starlink Travel Case Review + Alternatives

The popularity of Starlink Roam has soared among RV owners, van dwellers, and other kinds of travelers. Having access to high speed internet is an important part of our daily lives in 2024. With Starlink, that’s now possible almost anywhere in the world.

If you are taking Starlink with you, it is important to keep the hardware protected. That’s where Starlink cases come in. With the right case, you can easily store your dish so that it stays protected while traveling. When it comes time to set it up, everything is organized and easily accessible.

In this article, I will be reviewing an official Starlink accessory – the Starlink Travel Case. I’ll show you how it’s used, share my impressions of the case, and tell you if I recommend it. I will also provide recommendations for 3rd party case alternatives.

Official Starlink Travel Case

travel case starlink

I recently started bringing my Starlink Roam system with me on my camping trips so that I could do a bit of work, and enjoy movies in the evenings. I have a 13 ft. Scamp travel trailer. I’ve looked into building my own case, but never got around to it. Instead, I would just stuff my Starlink in a storage cabinet in the travel trailer.

That’s worked fine so far, but I always worry about damaging the dish, or leaving something behind. So I decided to purchase a storage case to protect my investment.

The Starlink Travel Case is an official accessory from Starlink, so I decided to try it out. It fits the Standard hardware perfectly, includes backpack straps, and has a hard shell exterior. I bought it directly from the Starlink shop for $250.

It measures about the size of a carry on luggage case – 25.5″ x 17″ x 13.25″, and weights less than 10 lbs. empty. The Starlink Travel Case should fit into most airplane overhead bins.

Using the case

The Starlink Travel Case has a single compartment, accessed with a zipper. A rigid foam partition has places for a complete Starlink kit, including the dish, stand, router, and cables.

Starlink includes an instruction sheet that shows how to pack everything inside the case. The router goes in first, followed by the stand. The cables go in next. A protective layer flips down, and the dish lays on top. Then you just zip the case shut.

For transporting and moving the case, there are 2 handles, and also backpack straps. One of the handles is on the the long side, the other is on the shorter side, allowing you to carry it in any orientation. The backpack straps are on the top of the case. The top of the case is also padded, so that it’s comfortable when using the backpack straps.

When it is time to unpack, unzip the case, and take everything out in reverse order from when the case was packed.

My impressions and review

My first impression when opening the box was that the Starlink Travel Case is really a backpack that can double as a storage case. The backpack straps and padding are not removable. This case can be carried with the two handles, but it’s really meant to be a backpack case.

The outer shell is made from a strong but flexible plastic. It’s strong enough to protect the dish from damage during transport, but flexible enough to avoid dents and cracks if the case moves or falls in transit. The exterior is nicely textured. Not only does it look and feel great, the texture helps the case avoid scuffs and scratches from loading/unloading.

The inner foam section reminds me of a very thick and rigid styrofoam. It doesn’t chip easily, and holds all the components in tightly. All sides of the case have at least an inch of foam protecting the contents. Starlink even includes a fabric divider that isolates the dish from the rest of the kit. It helps the dish to avoid any scratches from the mount. They also include some pouches for the Starlink cable and router power cord.

The handles and backpack straps are built well. There is a surprising amount of padding on the shoulder straps and “top” of the case where your back rests. I found it completely comfortable to walk around for a bit with the Starlink Travel Case completely loaded up. The handles are made from a mix of rubber and plastic. They are flexible enough to take some abuse, but strong enough to confidently carry and move the case with ease.

travel case starlink

One big concern I had with this case is whether or not it’s waterproof. On the website, Starlink doesn’t mention that it’s waterproof. But after getting my hands on the case, it’s clear that the case and zipper system are designed to be water resistant. The zipper has a rubber seal, and the exterior shell won’t absorb water. The Starlink Travel Case won’t keep water out if it’s dropped in a lake, but it is resistant to rain and other water spray you may encounter while transporting the case.

Would I recommend it?

$250 is a lot to spend on a storage case, but I feel that the Starlink Travel Case is worth it overall. It’s light but strong, easy to carry around, and fits all the Starlink hardware in a single compartment. While not technically waterproof, the case is water resistant. I feel that it could withstand rain and dust without any issues.

So overall, yes, I would recommend the Starlink Travel Case to anyone looking for a storage and transport solution for their Starlink Roam kit. Compared to similar 3rd party cases, the official Starlink option is usually cheaper, but lacks some features. I think this case does what most people need it to do. If you need something tougher, I have some recommendations in the next section.

Other Starlink cases to consider

If you don’t like the backpack feature of the Starlink case, or you need something more heavy duty, here are some other Starlink case options to consider.

Radius Outfitters Starlink Storage Case

travel case starlink

The most premium Starlink case on our 3rd party alternative list is the Radius Outfitters Starlink Storage Case . Radius Outfitters is a US-based company that makes all sorts of storage and organization gear, mainly targeting vans and other kinds of adventure vehicles. They pride themselves on being an engineer-led team, focusing on quality design and functionality. Their Starlink Storage Case is pre-assembled with a custom foam insert, designed for a Gen 2 Starlink Standard kit.

The case is constructed with a variety of high quality materials. The main shell is made of Cordura, which is a common material for luggage bags. You’ll also find nylon, and even leather, throughout the case. Inside, a foam insert has cutouts that fit the various Starlink kit components. The foam insert is removable, and Radius Outfitters even includes extra dividers. That means you can use this case for other tasks when you aren’t using it for Starlink.

Pelican 1610 Case

Pelican 1610 Case With Foam (Black), Model:1610-020-110

#ComissionsEarned

The Pelican 1610 Case is a long time favorite of the Starlink community. Before the official Starlink case, many people were buying the Pelican 1610 and modifying it for use with Starlink. It has a Polypropylene shell that can withstand drops. The case is watertight, so you won’t have to worry about the outside elements getting inside.

It has plenty of handles, and also wheels, to make transporting the case very easy. The case comes with foam inserts that you can cut to create a custom fit for your Starlink kit. That’s about the only downside compared to the official Starlink case. It does require a little bit of DIY.

Budget DIY option

#CommissionsEarned

Suclain Game Box Inset Foam 15.7 x 11.81 x 2 in Insert Interlocking Case Gridline Foam Cube (2 Pack)

If you don’t want to spend a ton of money on a Starlink case, consider a DIY approach. By combining a cheap storage tote with some cubed foam, you can make a custom protective case. You may even have some kind of storage container laying around that you can use, and just purchase the foam instead. For under $100, this is a great budget option.

To get you started, I’ve selected the CX 17-Gallon Tough Storage Container , pictured above. Then all you need is the cubed foam. You can use almost any foam, but cubed foam is very easy to shape into anything. The foam pictured above is a good place to start.

There are several tradeoffs with this option. The storage containers aren’t as tough or impact resistant as other cases. And not all storage containers are lockable or water resistant.

Final thoughts

If you take Starlink with you for traveling or work, it’s important to protect your investment with some kind of transport/storage case. Starlink has their own backpack case, which I can recommend after reviewing it myself. But there are also some 3rd party alternatives that are cheaper or more heavy duty if that’s what you need.

Standard vs High Performance – Which Starlink Is Right For You?

14 thoughts on “Starlink Travel Case Review + Alternatives”

Have you tried to the airplane? Do they let you to take it with you on the cabin?

It should fit on most airplanes as carry on, but double check the dimensions with your airline prior to flying to be sure.

Looks like a great solution for both storage and travel. One thing I wish it had was an accessory pocket for a slim laptop; is there anywhere in the bag to fit in a slim 14″ laptop, without damaging anything or it sliding around?

I use a 35 gallon husky water proof/tight storage tote fromhomedepot. I use the original packaging for the stand and the dish. My modem stays in inside the RV when traveling. Works outstanding.

I still use the original box from when it was shipped to me. Possibly use it as a pattern to cut out foam one day. The convenience of this one seems great, but at $250, I have resisted so far. The top reason to buy is probably convenience (it is small and well designed) and weight. If you have a need to backpack, it’s the obvious choice.

I want to buy this but I can not find it on the starlink site. I used the link on the page here but it goes to my billing. I found the SHOP button in the hamburger menu on the front page of starlink but it also directs straight to the same billing page….am I doing something wrong? or is it not available any longer?

If the direct link doesn’t work, it means it is not available in your market.

In regards to the info above about fitting into most airplane overhead bins, Does this info apply to the Rectangular Starlink kit? I’m going to be traveling in a few weeks and would like to use this as a carry on.

Yes, all the cases above are for the Standard (rectangular gen 2) kit.

Thanks for doing this review ! Very helpful. One question, on the dimensions listed, which is the height ? Height as pictured in your very first pic with the scamp in the background, the case laying straps down.

It’s about 12 inches tall at the highest point when it is laying down (like in the picture).

These cases are absurd. They price from almost half to almost twice the cost of the dish/router itself which is beyond stupid. The box it comes in is 24” x 14” x 10” and I’m guessing weighs about a pound. Smaller and lighter than any of the cases. As far as waterproofing goes, any reasonably stretchy 13 gallon kitchen trash bag fits nicely over the box.

Using the box and some type of waterproof cover is a great budget idea!

hey Noah, SavageATV’s Starlink “On the Go” case is a solid alternative too. https://www.savageutv.com/collections/starlink-storage/products/starlink-on-the-go-case?variant=40169148809259 cheers

Best Starlink Dish & Router Storage Case for Travel in 2022

Photo of author

If you haven’t heard, Starlink is now available to use while traveling. For most users, roaming is now enabled, which lets you use your dish and router while on the road.

Even if you’re hundreds of miles from your service address, roaming allows you to setup and configure your Starlink service wherever you’d like. Whether you’re a full time RV camper or an occasional weekend warrior, this opens up a whole new realm of possibilities.

Simply put, if you’d like to use Starlink while you travel, you’re going to need to get used to frequently setting up the hardware, and taking it down just as often. That said, you’re going to want a safe and dependable storage solution.

While you could simply use the cardboard box that the dish and router shipped in, this isn’t always ideal. Needless to say, it isn’t well-padded. Over time, it’ll surely break down and become flimsy. In addition, it’s not even slightly water-resistant. And if you’re an experienced traveler or full time RVer, you know even just a little bit of water resistance goes a long way.

starlink-dish-traveling

Best Starlink Dish & Router Storage Case

Opting for a hard-case is a smart idea. Sure, it’ll add a bit of an expense, but in the long run, a dedicated storage case for your Starlink is nearly essential while traveling. Since we published our article on the best Starlink dish mounts , we’ve received several inquiries regarding which storage cases are best for the equipment.

Today we’re going to explore our options. Over the past week, we’ve spent hours researching and testing the best solutions for Starlink dish and router storage cases for travel. Thankfully, we’ve found several excellent options that are all readily available. Let’s get right into it!

Pelican 1610 Case

Best Overall: Pelican 1610 Case (with foam)

As a top of the line option, the Pelican 1610 Case is the best choice, in our opinion. Although it’s quite expensive, it’s clearly the best designed and manufactured storage case for the Starlink equipment. It comes included with a block of foam that’s fully customizable to the exact shape of the dish, router and cables. In addition, the lid has an overabundance of foam padding to ensure the hardware is fully encased in a soft, overly padded enclosure.

Pelican 1610 Case

With the outer dimensions measuring 24.83 x 11.88 x 19.69 inches, it’s moderately compact without taking up too much space. While the interior dimensions are said to be 21.78 x 16.69 x 10.62 inches, it actually fits the Starlink equipment just right with a tight but snug fit. Although the tripod base measures 22 inches from tip to tip, it actually fits perfectly from edge to edge at a slight angle.

Design & Build Quality

While the Pelican 1610 is also available without foam , we highly recommend using the case with foam . The inner foam comes as a complete block but is perforated in several small blocks. The first thing you’ll need to do is shape it to the precise size of the equipment. Luckily, the foam is divided into several layers and is easily “picked and plucked” so you can create perfect voids for the router, dish and cables.

Pelican 1610 Case

The best part of the Pelican case is the ruggedness that it offers. Simply put, the thing is built like a tank. Comprised of a thick, black polypropylene material, it’s considered military grade. In fact, it even provides a watertight seal with the use of a polymer o-ring and a tongue and groove fit between the lid and the lower compartment.

While you’re likely not going to throw it in a lake or toss it down a hill, it’s built to withstand almost anything. Additionally, there’s even two stainless steel reinforced padlock protectors for locking it up when necessary. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that the Pelican 1610 has its very own purge valve. This automatically equalizes the internal pressure and assures that water stays out. This features is ideal for those who find themselves traveling between high and low elevations.

  • Incredibly durable with a thick, rugged exterior.
  • Pluck and pull foam is easy to customize.
  • Steel reinforced padlock holes.
  • Completely waterproof with an air-tight seal and purge valve.
  • The best, most heavy duty option available.
  • Relatively expensive.
  • A bit heavy and bulky for some scenarios.

Ezy Storage Waterproof Plastic Storage Tote

Best Runner-Up: Ezy Storage Waterproof Plastic Storage Tote

The Ezy Waterproof Plastic Storage Tote is a much less expensive alternative to the Pelican case. The 75-liter size measures 25.98 x 18.5 x 13.15 inches on the outside, with just enough room inside for the Starlink dish, router and accessories.

Ezy Storage Waterproof Plastic Storage Tote

Although it doesn’t come with any internal padding or foam, using the original plastic insert from the Starlink box is ideal. Hopefully you have this saved, as it offers a simple yet effective way for this storage container to work perfectly.

Simply place it in the container exactly as you would with the original cardboard box it came shipped in, and you’re good to go. There’s even a little bit of extra space to add other equipment. However, we highly recommend adding some extra bubble wrap or padding to fill this void.

The Ezy Storage Tote looks like a standard plastic storage bin, but it’s actually made much better than your typical version. In fact, it comes with a lid that provides an airtight seal, making it IP67 rated.

This rating means the entire box is able to be fully submerged in water of up to 1 meter deep. Ultimately, this means that you can keep it outside or in an area that may have some moisture, and never need to worry about your Starlink equipment that’s placed inside.

Ezy Storage Waterproof Plastic Storage Tote

Around the top perimeter, there’s six individual latches that tightly snap-down the lid. The lid itself has its own rubber gasket that creates the perfect air-tight seal. While the plastic isn’t quite as “tough” as the Pelican, it’s relatively heavy duty. In fact, we found it to be a bit thicker than your standard storage tote.

In addition, the exterior side of the lid has an indentation that creates a stable surface for an additional Ezy tote to be placed. Realistically, this means you can use multiple bins to stack in a neat and efficient manner for any extra gear you may need to bring along. However, they’ll need to be of the same brand for this to work as well as it should.

  • Made from heavy duty plastic.
  • Much less expensive than the Pelican case.
  • Six sturdy latches create a strong seal between the lid and tote.
  • Offers an IP67 airtight and watertight seal.
  • Clear so you can see what’s inside the container.
  • Has a little bit of extra space; must place padding or bubble wrap for a snug fit.
  • Not quite as “bombproof” as the Pelican case.
  • Difficult to stack other brand totes on top.

HDX 17 Gal Storage Tote

Best Alternative: HDX 17 Gal. Storage Tote

For those who want a simple and inexpensive option, we highly recommend checking out the HDX 17 Gal. Storage Tote . Although it’s not quite as rugged and tightly sealed as the Pelican 1610 or Ezy tote, it offers a good fit without any gap on either side.

HDX 17 Gal Storage Tote

Using the original plastic insert that originally shipped with your Starlink equipment, you can simply drop it in. While it may need a nudge to push down to the bottom of the tote, it provides a relatively tight fit. In fact, extra padding is not entirely necessary. Externally measuring 27 x 18 x 12.5 inches, it provides an excellent fit for the dish and router, but there isn’t much remaining space for the cables.

The material used in the composition of the HDX storage tote is fairly rugged. The thick black plastic is excellent for keeping out UV rays, but it’ll heat up quickly if left out in the sun for too long. In fact, the plastic seems to be even thicker than the Ezy tote, although it doesn’t provide an air/water tight seal around the edge of the lid.

HDX 17 Gal Storage Tote

The lid snaps on with ease and secures firmly around the entire edge. While there isn’t a rubber gasket to keep out water and moisture, the lid is indented so stacking additional totes is very easy. When shut, it forms a grove that perfectly nests the base of another HDX tote.

Around the perimeter of the lid are several holes that match-up with the tote. Here, you’re able to add a padlock or strap to keep it securely shut. While this isn’t entirely necessary, it’s a great way to add an extra bit of security.

  • Relatively inexpensive and well-built.
  • Fits the Starlink dish and router snug, without any extra wiggle room.
  • Lid snaps on nicely and provides holes for padlocks.
  • Able to securely stack multiple totes on top of each lid.
  • Thicker, stronger plastic than the Ezy tote.
  • Does not fit cables or anything extra.
  • Not fully sealed for water, dust and moisture.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there are a few great options that work nicely as storage containers for the Starlink equipment. Whether you’re a full time RVer or a weekend warrior, having a dedicated solution for protecting your Starlink dish, router and accessories is vital. After all, the equipment is fairly expensive and nearly impossible to replace if you were to accidently damage it.

Clearly, the Pelican 1610 Case is the best of the best when it comes to overall protection. It provides the best possible protection while encasing everything in a fully waterproof enclosure. The Pelican case is built so well, in fact, that you could probably drop it off the roof of your RV with the Starlink equipment inside, and it’ll be just fine. While we wouldn’t recommend intentionally testing the ruggedness of it, it’s obviously the ideal solution. However, the Pelican case, whether you buy it with or without the foam insert, is quite expensive.

If you don’t want to spend over $200 on a case, we recommend checking out the Ezy Storage Tote . It’s IP67 waterproof, meaning you can submerge the entire case up to 1 meter of water without worry of water ingress. By providing an airtight seal, your Starlink equipment will stay dry and dust free whether you keep the case inside your RV or outside in the elements. Sure, it may not be as bombproof as the Pelican, but it’s a great option, nonetheless.

Moving on, we also examined the HDX 17 Gal. Storage Tote . It’s even less expensive than the Ezy tote and is equally well-made. However, it doesn’t provide a water/air tight seal. While this may not be a deal breaker for most, it’s not going to keep out moisture like the Pelican or Ezy tote will. However, the thick plastic it’s comprised of is worth mentioning. It’s strong, rugged and has a stackable design that can nest multiple HDX totes on top of each other.

Starlink black market —

Report details how russia obtains starlink terminals for war in ukraine, russians buy from middlemen and "deliver spacex hardware to the front line.".

Jon Brodkin - Apr 9, 2024 6:24 pm UTC

A Starlink terminal in front of a sign that says,

A report published today describes how Russia obtained Starlink terminals for its war in Ukraine despite US sanctions and SpaceX's insistence that Russia hasn't bought the terminals either directly or indirectly.

The Wall Street Journal report describes black market sales to Russians and a Sudanese paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently determined that the Rapid Support Forces and allied militias committed war crimes and are responsible for ethnic cleansing in Darfur.

The WSJ said it "tracked Starlink sales on numerous Russian online retail platforms," "interviewed Russian and Sudanese middlemen and resellers, and followed Russian volunteer groups that deliver SpaceX hardware to the front line."

The WSJ described Oleg, a salesman at Moscow-based online retailer shopozz.ru, who "supplemented his usual business of peddling vacuum cleaners and dashboard phone mounts by selling dozens of Starlink internet terminals that wound up with Russians on the front lines in Ukraine."

Starlink terminals reportedly provide a technical upgrade to Russian troops whose radio communications were being jammed or intercepted by Ukraine troops.

"In Russia, middlemen buy the hardware, sometimes on eBay, in the US and elsewhere, including on the black market in Central Asia, Dubai or Southeast Asia, then smuggle it into Russia," the report said. "Russian volunteers boast openly on social media about supplying the terminals to troops. They are part of an informal effort to boost Russia's use of Starlink in Ukraine, where Russian forces are advancing."

These "middlemen have proliferated in recent months to buy the user terminals and ship them to Russian forces," the report said.

Lawmakers doubt SpaceX compliance with sanctions

Today's report came about a month after two Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to SpaceX alleging that Russia's use of Starlink in Ukraine raises questions about SpaceX's "compliance with US sanctions and export controls."

"We are concerned that you may not have appropriate guardrails and policies in place to ensure your technology is neither acquired directly or indirectly, nor used illegally by Russia," said the letter from US Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Robert Garcia (D-Calif.).

In February, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk denied what he called "false news reports [that] claim that SpaceX is selling Starlink terminals to Russia," saying that, "to the best of our knowledge, no Starlinks have been sold directly or indirectly to Russia."

We contacted SpaceX today and will update this article if we get a response.

Russia has said it doesn't allow Starlink use. A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin said in February that Starlink "is not certified [in Russia], therefore it cannot and is not officially supplied here. It cannot be used in any way."

The Journal report said that US adversaries have been able to connect to satellites after dealers who sell Starlink terminals "register the hardware in countries where Starlink is allowed." SpaceX uses geofencing to limit Starlink access, and Musk has said that "Starlink satellites will not close the link in Russia." But blocking Russian use of Starlink in Ukraine without affecting Ukraine troops' use of the service would likely be more complicated.

Ukraine, Sudan ask SpaceX for help

Ukraine's top military-intelligence officer, Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, said in an interview that "Russian invasion forces in his country are using thousands of Starlink satellite Internet terminals, and that the network has been active in occupied parts of Ukraine for 'quite a long time,'" according to a WSJ report in February.

The Journal's new report states that "Ukrainian officials said they contacted SpaceX about Russian forces using Starlink terminals in Ukraine and that they are working together on a solution." The report also quotes US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb as saying that the US is "working with Ukraine and we're working with Starlink" on how to end Russian use of Starlink in Ukraine.

The RSF reportedly uses Starlink in fighting against government forces . "Sudanese military officials and unauthorized Starlink dealers said in interviews that Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF's deputy commander, has overseen the purchase of hundreds of Starlink terminals from dealers in the United Arab Emirates," the WSJ report said.

The report also said that "Sudanese authorities have contacted SpaceX and requested help in regulating the use of Starlink, including by allowing the military to turn off service areas where it was helping the RSF. Starlink never responded to the request, Sudanese officials said."

Customer Reviews

This is a fabulous case! Nicely padded, perfect fit for all components. Very well designed zipper/velcro flap for dish as well as handle and shoulder strap. Exactly what I was looking for and is very high quality.

Best bag on the market at a great price point.

Well constructed and holds all the necessary components of the Starlink system as well as the pipe adapter…..

Purchased the case to store and protect my Starlink, Router etc. The case is perfect, not bulky as space is limited in my Off-grid trailer worth the investment.

Got this for our new Gen 3. It is sturdy, very protective, yet lightweight. It fits the Gen 3 dish, the router and a node. Exactly what I wanted!!

The case works perfectly for my gen 3 antenna and associated components

Firm case but still soft enough. Fits the Starlink and accessories well and should protect components during travel when camping.

Keeps everything together and protected! Only a few thousand miles with mine, but the equipment has ZERO dings and scratches from traveling in the back of my truck. Worth the money.

User picture

The case is excellent! I bought this before a long trip with our travel trailer and it protects and organizes the Starlink and all of its components. My wife was extremely complimentary of the case and the workmanship, and she used to sew for a living. I highly recommend it!
