5 clear toiletry bags for travel that are TSA compliant

Caroline Tanner

Thanks to being a TSA PreCheck member for nearly a decade, I can't recall the last time a TSA agent asked me to remove my toiletry bag from my carry-on when passing through security. Not having to deal with rummaging through luggage to remove your toiletries (along with electronics) is just one of the many perks of TSA PreCheck, the expedited security program.

But unfortunately, PreCheck benefits do not extend internationally. In my experience, certain airports abroad, including London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) , are much stricter in enforcing the universal quart-sized toiletry bag rule. In fact, the last time I flew from Heathrow, a security agent actually made me empty my entire quart-sized bag, which admittedly had several of the mini-sized products from the hotel I had stayed at sticking out. (In my defense, the products in question were Le Labo from the London Edition in the West End.)

Even so, I stood there and watched him put every last item back into the two plastic bags he supplied. Although I was slightly irritated during this process, it was a good reminder to travel with a compliant toiletry bag and to not let the opportunity for free La Labo result in trying to cram nine bottles into your bag at the last minute.

When traveling in Europe, for example, passengers are restricted to a one-liter transparent plastic bag for their liquids, aerosols, drinks, toothpaste, creams, gels, etc., per the European Union . Domestically, you must put your liquids in a quart-sized bag (approximately 7 x 8 inches in size, though TSA does not specify measurement requirements), with each product less than 3.4 ounces, per the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule.

Even if you are traveling abroad, all travelers departing from the U.S. must adhere to the quart-sized bag rule, which is why we've compiled this guide with some of our favorite clear TSA-compliant toiletry bags.

TPG's favorite carry-on toiletry bags

clear travel bags for carry on

Clear Toiletry Bag, Bagsmart 3 Pack , $11.99 at Amazon

clear travel bags for carry on

Since we love a deal here at TPG, let's start with one of the cheapest options on this list. Thanks to Bagsmart, you can purchase a three-pack of bags measuring 7.5 x 5.9 x 2.2 inches for just under $12.

"Bagsmart bags are inexpensive and have held up to my frequent use," says TPG family travel writer Tarah Chieffi, who also uses them abroad. "They are great for international travel when you often still have to remove your liquids from your luggage and put them through separately. And they come in a lot of fun colors so you can match them to your luggage."

Stasher Quart Bag, $19.99 at Stasher

clear travel bags for carry on

Another budget-friendly option comes to us from Stasher, which I can personally attest to as having high-quality yet affordable products — I've used the brand's Pocket Bag ($7.99) to hold my headphones when traveling. Thanks to the brand's range of reusable bags which meet any size needs, it has at least two options for TSA-friendly toiletry bags, such as the signature Quart Bag, measuring 8.75 x 7.5 inches.

"I started using them as my go-to toiletry bag because they're super durable, washable, see-through (so easy to find what you need inside) and they have a little stretch, which is great when you need to cram in just one or two extra things," TPG global features managing editor Melanie Lieberman told me.

She also likes the brand's stand-up bags, such as the Stand-Up Mini Bag ($17.99, 5.5 x 7.5 inches), whose flat bottoms allow the bags to stand up on their own, a feature that is hard to find.

The Clear Pouch Set , $45 at Away

clear travel bags for carry on

Away is known for its ubiquitous hardshell suitcases, including its top-rated carry-on, my personal favorite. Beyond suitcases, the brand has expanded into travel accessories, including its Clear Pouch Set, which in true Away style, features two TSA-approved bags, one large and one small, that are also spill-proof.

With a leather-like trim, these bags have a folded bottom that expands for extra room but still packs flat. The small one measures 7.3" x 0.8" x 4.3" inches with a 0.3 liter capacity, making it suitable for your liquids, while the larger one, at 8.66" x 0.8" x 5.3" inches with a 0.5 liter capacity, also meets TSA size requirements.

Plus, these bags fit seamlessly into the corresponding Away Toiletry Bag ( small and large versions are available online for $55 and $75, respectively) and — like all Away products — you can try this bag combo for free for 100 days and return at no cost if you are not satisfied. But based on my experience with Away products, you won't want to return it.

Small Clear Cosmetics Case , $75 at Cal Pak

clear travel bags for carry on

If you are concerned about see-through aesthetics yet still want to be able to carry on your liquids (which to be honest, I can relate to), consider the Mini Clear Cosmetics Case from Cal Pak for $75. At 8 x 4 x 6 inches, it still weighs less than a pound despite being more substantial than the other bags on this list.

"The Calpak Clear Cosmetic Case is large enough to hold all of your toiletries, but still small enough to fit in your luggage," says Tarah. "The separate compartments help you stay organized and because it's clear, it's easy to find what you are looking for."

With a range of classic colors (mauve, stone, caramel and black) and limited editions like the dragonfruit one currently available, this bag is sure to meet your style needs. It has a lay-flat carrying handle, a water-resistant lining and features two zippered compartments to effectively organize your items. And, it's covered by a one-year limited warranty.

If you ultimately need more space and decide to check a bag, Cal Pak also has a larger version of the Clear Cosmetics Case for $95.

Bottom line

Each of these toiletry bag options is TSA-compliant to meet the agency's 3-1-1 liquid rule and quart-size bag requirements, so you shouldn't have any issues using any of them, even if you are not a PreCheck member and have to remove it from your carry-on to go through TSA security.

Although you could technically use a plastic Ziploc quart bag, it's 2022, and we simply cannot be out there using single-use plastic every time we travel.

Remember that these are TPG's top choices for carry-on bags — TSA size requirements do not apply to checked bags. Be sure to stay tuned for our guide to the best larger toiletry bags.

Ultralight Clear Toiletry Bags for Carry-On Travel

In this post I want to share with you 5 ultralight clear toiletry bags for carry-on travel. My goal was to pick pouches that are large enough for minimalist travel toiletries, while also being small and extremely lightweight. The 5 bags that I have here are the Sea to Summit Sea Pouch , Osprey Ultralight Liquids Pouch , Think Tank Cable Management 10 V2.0 , Tom Bihn 3D Clear Pouch , and the Nite-Ize 3-1-1 Pouch .

And then I think I would be remiss if I didn’t include a trusty quart sized zip-lock baggie for comparison. An extremely cost effective, usually waterproof, yet not as durable option for your toiletries.

Sea to Summit See Pouch Cost: $17.95 Capacity: 0.8 liter Dimensions: 8” x 4” x 2” (20 x 10 x 5 cm) Weight : 1.6 oz. (45 g) Materials: 30D Ultra-Sil CORDURA nylon Origin: Made in Vietnam

Osprey Ultralight Liquids Pouch Cost: $10.00 Capacity: 1.0 liter Dimensions: 8” x 5” x 2.1” (20 x 13 x 5 cm) Weight : 1.0 oz. (28.3 g) Materials: 40D Nylon Ripstop; #5 YKK zippers Origin: Made in Vietnam

Think Tank Cable Management 10 V2.0 Cost: $21.75 Capacity: 1.0 liters Dimensions: 7.3” x 4” x 1.8” (18.5 x 10 x 4.5 cm) Weight : 1.6 oz. (45 g) Materials: 210D nylon; #5 YKK zippers; DWR coating Origin: Made in Vietnam

Tom Bihn 3D Clear Pouch Cost: $17.95 Capacity: 0.8 liters Dimensions: 7.1″ x 4.3″ x 2″ (18 x 11 x 5 cm) Weight : 2.2 oz. (62 g) Materials: 30D Ultra-Sil CORDURA nylon Origin: Made in USA

Nite-Ize 3-1-1 Pouch Cost: $17.95 Capacity: 0.8 liters Dimensions: 9.1 x 5.9 x 2.4” (23 x 15 x 6 cm) Weight : 1.0 oz. (28.3 g) Materials: 30D Ultra-Sil CORDURA nylon Origin: Made in USA

Ziploc Freezer Quart Baggie Cost: $0.14 Capacity: 1.0 quart (0.95 liter) Dimensions: 7” x 7.4” (18 x 19 cm) Weight : 0.2 oz. (5 g) Materials: Low Density Polyethylene Origin: Made in USA

Weight and Dimensions

Every toiletry bag I’ve been looking at over the last few months has been under 3 oz., or about 80g. These 5 pouches are all way under that limit, with the lightest being the See Pouch at just 1.0 oz., and the 3-1-1 pouch being the heaviest at 2.4 oz. As far as the dimensions go, the 3 rectangular Osprey, Think Tank, and See Pouch are all roughly the same size of about 8 x 4 x 2” or 20 x 10 x 5 cm. And the capacity is also similar at around 1.0 liter.

Clear Toiletry Pouches Weight and Dimensions

The Sea to Summit Sea Pouch is the smallest, with a slightly reduced capacity because it has a tapered top. While the Tom Bihn 3D Clear Pouch is the same capacity, but with slightly different dimensions. Being about an inch shorter in length, nut a little fatter in the depth than the rest.

And then finally the Nite-Ize 3-1-1 pouch, which has a completely different design. It’s longer at 9”, with tapered sides and top and a gusseted bottom so it will stand up on its own. Then I’ll throw the Ziplock bag in here for comparison. The See Pouch is 1.0 oz, while the Ziploc bag is a miniscule 0.2 oz, so obviously if weight is your only concern, this is an easy choice.

Materials and Durability

Materials and Durability Clear Toiletry Pouches

I chose all these brands because they’re from good companies that make high quality gear. However these two, the 3-1-1 pouch and the Tom Bihn 3D pouch are by far the best made. It’s hard to beat Tom Bihn for quality and you can just tell by looking at this bag that’s its extremely well made.

It has a large double YKK zipper, plastic loop hooks on the end, ripstop nylon, the plastic window is thick, and is noticeably softer and more pliable than these other bags. And then this is the only bag that bothers to include a middle hanging hook, which is a very helpful feature.

Zippers Clear Toiletry Pouches

The 3-1-1 bag is also extremely durable and well made. It’s completely waterproof, made from thick TPU impregnated fabric, with welded seams and a thick slider zipper that does a great job at keeping water out.

And while being the best made, these two pouches are also the most expensive. Both being around $34-35. They’re also the heaviest options here, at 2.2 oz (Tom Bihn) and 2.4 oz for the 3-1-1.

These other 3 pouches however are by no means low quality. The Osprey and Think tank pouches use nylon, with thick plastic windows and YKK zippers. The See Pouch feels noticeably thinner because they use Sil-Cordura nylon, which is very lightweight but durable. They however use a tiny, off-brand zipper which seems to be the standard for them. However, I’ve used their hanging pouch for years which has the same zipper without an issue in quality.

Sea to Summit Sea Pouch Quality

And then finally the Ziplock again. Made from recyclable polyethylene plastic obviously this is going to be the lightest and cheapest option. Weighing 0.2 oz and costing about 15 cents each. These freezer bags are going to last much longer than regular Ziploc bags, but these may eventually break or rip, especially on the seam.

An easy and cheap fix for this is to reinforce the seams and corners. You can use packaging tape, or reinforced cloth tape. Lay out a strip, stick half down along an edge, fold over, and cut off the corners. It adds a slight bit of weight but will last much longer than the original baggie.

Cost and Value

Tom Bihn 3D Organizer Built in Hanging Hook

If expense isn’t an issue, the Tom Bihn pouch is by far the best quality here, but also one of the most expensive at $34. However, it’s also the most customizable. The only other bag that has any color options is the See Pouch, which comes in 3 colors. While the 3D pouch comes in 3 fabric types and almost a dozen color options. You can also customize the bag with add-ons like a handle loop key strap, and shoulder strap.

I think the Osprey Liquids Pouch is the best value for the money of these bags. It’s well made, good quality ripstop fabric and a YKK zipper. Osprey also has a lifetime guarantee on all their gear for only $10.

Capacity Comparison

Minimalist Toiletries

Now I’ll do a quick packing comparison so you can see how much you can fit in these bags. Even though they are all roughly the same size, about a quart, or close to a liter, the way they pack is slightly different. I’ll start with these two, the Osprey and the Think Tank, since they are nearly identical in size and shape.

Osprey Ultralight Toiletry Pouch Capacity

Moving on to the Tom Bihn pouch. It’s the same size, but slightly shorter and fatter. It holds the same amount of stuff, the only problem I have here is the pouch just barely fits a full-sized toothbrush. So, if you carry one of these, you kind of have to cram it in here.

Tom Bihn 3D Organizer Cube Capacity

The Nite-Ize 3-1-1 pouch has tapered sides and top, wo while the volume is the same, the packing style is a little different. Putt thinner items near the sides or you could potentially lose some capacity, or it will be hard to zip closed.

Nite Ize 3-1-1 Pouch Capacity

The See Pouch is slightly smaller than the rest of these pouches. The amount of gear I have in here still fits but the zipper was hard to close and the gear is putting pressure on the bag. I would recommend taking a few of these items out or you could risk damaging the zipper.

Ziploc Bag Quart Freezer Capacity

Then the trusty Ziploc. Also 1 quart, easy to pack and see your stuff. It’s waterproof until you tear the bag, which can easily happen if you don’t reinforce the bag. I have it crammed pretty full, so you may also want to reduce the capacity by a few items or you risk splitting a seam.

Functionality

Clear Toiletry Pouch Functionality

Now as far as functionality goes, I think Tom Bihn and Nite-Ize 3-1-1 are the clear (pun intended) winners. The 3D clear Pouch here is fat and easy to pack, but the real advantage is the middle loop hook which lets you hang this bag almost anywhere.

Tom Bihn 3D Clear Organizer Functionality

The 3-1-1 Pouch doesn’t have a middle loop, but it does give you more options for hanging the bag. Two fabric loops on the ends as well as belt loops on the back which make it easy to attach a piece of string if you need to hang the bag

Functionality of Clear Toiletry Pouches

These other 3 don’t have great hanging options. The See Pouch and Think Tank both at least have two loops on the top corners for attaching something nut they’re not really big enough to hang the bag from. The Osprey pouch only has one fabric loop which is barely large enough to hang the bag from a bathroom hook, but not much else.

Waterproofness

Clear Pouch Waterproofness

Waterproof comparison the only one of these bags that I would consider truly waterproof is the 3-1-1 pouch. It’s basically a mini dry bag, with thick TPU plastic and a sealing sliding zipper. I had it fill up with water on my paddle board last weekend, but I didn’t have the zipper closed all the way if you make sure the seal is good you can fill this bag with water, and it won’t leak.

The Ziploc is technically waterproof however, this will only work until you get a tear in a seam. Taping the corners greatly improves the durability and it will be waterproof in the short term but can’t really trust this bag to keep out water after months of use.

In summary, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these toiletry bags. They’re all high quality, from good companies, but they have different features for different preferences.

If you’re looking for the most waterproof option to prevent spills, and bag can double as a dry bag the Nite-Ize 3-1-1 is the winner here. The lightest bag by far is the Sea to Summit See Pouch. It gives you the same functionality as the other pouches while just being slightly smaller, weighting in at just 1.0 oz and still being under $20.

Osprey makes the best budget option without cutting quality. It’s made from nylon ripstop, thick plastic TPU clear window and YKK zipper, and it’s a great deal for only $10.

The Think Tank pouch is a good middle of the road option. I like the look of this bag, it’s well made, with good materials, but there isn’t much that makes it stand out. It’s not the cheapest, lightest, or highest quality option. I think if I was looking at this bag, I would choose either the Osprey Liquids Pouch, because it’s similar quality but way cheaper, or I would choose the See Pouch, because it’s much lighter.

If you want the absolute best quality and don’t mind paying a little more, the Tom Bihn 3D Pouch is the clear winner. You can just feel the clear window is much softer, the ripstop, zipper, and stitching are noticeably better quality, and it has the largest YKK zipper. And added benefit of a center hanging hook, which I think is a nice tough.

What’s the Best Personal-Item Bag for Flying?

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

Between finding a carry-on that will fit in most overhead compartments, a toiletry bag or Dopp kit for your tiny bottles of shampoo, and an under-the-seat personal item to hold everything you’ll need for in-flight comfort and entertainment, solving the packing equation isn’t easy. To make things even more complicated, there aren’t even standard regulations for what counts as a “personal item” — as my fellow writer Rachael Griffiths explains here , each airline has its own particular requirements. If you’ve purchased a basic fare on a no-frills carrier like Frontier or Spirit, you’ll generally want to stick with a bag measuring 8 x 18 x 14 inches or smaller (and if you’ve purchased a personal-item-only fare, I’ve written a minimalist packing guide to help you figure out how to travel with just one small bag). On most other airlines, there’s a lot more you can get away with. Below, find advice from stylish frequent fliers (and Strategist staffers) about the totes, duffels, and backpacks they slip over the handles of their suitcases.

Update on August 15, 2024: Added the Baggu Small Cloud Carry on; added restock information for the Timbuk2 Never Check; added testing notes to the Dagne Dover Ace fanny pack; updated prices and checked stock for all other products.

The best personal-item tote bags

Parker Thatch Medium Mimi - Suede Caramel

Yolo Journal ’s Yolanda Edwards likes travel bags that don’t look like travel bags and can therefore be used for everyday sightseeing and shopping upon reaching your destination. Parker Thatch’s roomy totes fit the bill, and while they don’t have a luggage sleeve, Edwards has no problem slipping the handles of this one over her Rimowa suitcase. “And it’s great for going to the farmers’ market once I arrive where I’m going,” she adds.

Longchamp Large Le Pliage Tote

“I look for a bag that can sit on top of my carry-on, fit a lot of items, and be easily stored when not in use,” says Daniela Velasco, the creative director of Drift magazine. That bag, for her, is Longchamp’s forever classic Le Pliage tote, which flattens and folds up for storage. Strategist senior editor Hilary Reid owns one in orange and is also “always surprised by how much fits inside.”

L.L. Bean Boat and Tote, Zip-Top

Is there a more quintessential carry-all than the L.L.Bean Boat and Tote? Writer and influencer Harry Hill doesn’t think so. “As someone who is usually drawn to more uppity travel bags, this trusty tote is a delight because of how unfussy it is,” Hill tells us. “It fits a ton, it’s super-lightweight, and I don’t have to worry about spilling coffee on the vachetta or putting it on the ground.” Hill suggests monogramming your name — or a crude joke, depending on personal preference. For additional customization, “the colorways are constantly changing, so keep an eye out if you have a specific vision for your tote.” While Hill adds that it’s impossible to go wrong, because any L.L.Bean “will make you look like a Kennedy skipping town,” the zip-up version of the bag will give more peace of mind at the airport.

Cuyana Easy Travel Tote

Strategist contributing writer Mya Gelber spent a day asking stylish strangers on the subway about their work bags, and Cuyana’s Classic Easy Zipper Tote was the one she ended up purchasing for herself. So when the brand announced this larger travel-friendly version of the popular bag, I immediately ordered one to test out. Made from soft and slouchy leather, it’s a big bag that can definitely fit an outfit or two alongside your laptop, passport, and other essentials. While it can’t be worn as a cross-body, the tote’s shoulder straps are long and thick enough to be comfortable for long periods of time. There’s no luggage sleeve, either, but this means that the bag can be used more seamlessly in everyday life — it would be an excellent investment for anyone who is commuting gym-to-office.

Pacific Tote Company

Sewn in California from leftover sailing canvas, Pacific Tote Company’s bags are similar to L.L. Bean boat totes, except more brightly colored. The company is co-owned by director Roman Coppola (brother to Sofia, who carries Pacific Tote bags on set ) and beloved by bi-coastal film industry insiders. If you work in film and fly between L.A. and New York every other week, you carry your laptop in this pleasingly sturdy bag . Strategist style columnist Chris Black is also a fan .

Kule The Over the Shoulder Tote

When she’s not traveling with her Parker Thatch bag, Edwards also likes to use Kule’s roomy totes as personal items. Saturday Night Live ’s Chloe Fineman travels with one of these too, and says it fits both a laptop and extra outfit inside. She adds that the New York brand’s designs are “a little cheeky and a little funny,” as well as a nice reminder of home when she’s on the road.

MZ Wallace Medium Metro Tote Deluxe

Here’s another professional-looking, multi-purpose travel tote, as recommended by Strategist writer Lauren Ro. She says it makes a great carry-on personal item because it’s lightweight and custom-designed for air travel, with a luggage sleeve and exterior pockets for stashing chargers and tidbits, as well as a removable crossbody strap.

Baggu Cloud Carry On

At least two friends that I know of ended up immediately purchasing a Baggu Cloud Carry-on after I flaunted mine at a destination wedding last year. Made from weightless but durable nylon, the airplane-friendly version of the brand’s original Cloud Bag can hold a lot of stuff, and the bright colorways stand out in a sea of boring navy duffels at the airport. Puffy shoulder straps make standing in line at security a bit more tolerable, and generous external pockets are handy for stashing a book or water bottle. The original bag’s dimensions are actually rather large (14 × 20 × 8 inches) for a personal item, although its bulkiness really depends on how much stuff you pack inside. I’ve taken mine on a personal-item-only Spirit flight with no issues at all, and on longer trips I have also slipped it over the handle of a Samsonite carry-on suitcase using the attached luggage sleeve. If you’re looking for something more compact that’ll definitely squish under the seat in front of you, Baggu recently launched a smaller size (16.5 by 12.5 by 6.5 inches) with the same comfortable padded straps and removable zipper pouch inside.

The best personal-item duffel bags

Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC

Former Strategist associate editor Louis Cheslaw calls this Patagonia duffel his “ secret second suitcase ,” because its unassuming-yet-roomy interior lets him pack heavy without checking a bag. The Black Hole’s 30-liter capacity is about as large as a bag can be while still qualifying as the “personal item” you can bring onboard with your main carry-on suitcase and slide under the seat in front of you, Cheslaw notes. “Within that capacity, I can easily fit two pairs of shoes as well as a week’s worth of underwear, socks, and thin shirts, relieving a ton of pressure on my suitcase.”

Halfday The Garment Duffel

This new-school garment bag, which made our Travel 100 list of the best products to take on the road, can keep a suit or gown unwrinkled while also cleverly storing several other outfits. My fellow Strategist writer Rachael Griffiths loves taking hers on weekend trips with friends, especially when packing satin dresses and pleated shirts for nights out. It’s ideal for destination weddings, and Moonflower wine bar co-owner Rebecca Johnson even took one all the way to Tasmania for a romantic antipodean getaway with her husband. Going ’s travel spokesperson, Katy Nastro, told me that it’s very popular among her exceedingly well-traveled colleagues.

Dagne Dover Landon Neoprene Carryall - Medium

For both carry-on backpacks and duffels, former Paper fashion editor Mario Abad turns to Dagne Dover’s neoprene travel bags. “They’re the best,” he says. “They’re really lightweight, and they’re made of this scuba material that looks sleek and modern and is nice to the touch.” The bags aren’t just aesthetically pleasing, though. “You can fit a lot of stuff inside — it’s a minimal aesthetic, no busy details or anything, just all the compartments you need.” Jessica Morrobel of  Traveling With Jessica agrees that the Landon is an “absolute lifesaver,” and  Going ’s travel spokesperson, Katy Nastro, is also a fan, especially for quick overnights. The duffel comes in five sizes, but medium is the best option if you know you’ll be flying on budget carriers with strict rules.

The best personal-item backpacks

Lo & Sons Hanover Deluxe 2 Travel Backpack

This is my current personal item backpack of choice. It is designed to slip over the handles of a carry-on suitcase, but over Christmas I took it as my only luggage on a weeklong train trip across Turkey and Georgia and it fit everything I needed, including an extra pair of shoes. The neutral design is as appropriate for day hiking and office commuting as it is flying. But the capacity is the biggest drawcard. Creator Jessica Wright of Bon Traveler is a longtime user and says she is “shocked” by how much it can hold. Great for packers who like to compartmentalize, the interior is separated into various sleeves and sections for a laptop, clothing, and tech items. But you can also remove these compartments and just use it as a black hole bag if needed.

Timbuk2 Never Check Expandable Backpack

My fellow Strategist travel writer Rachael Griffiths prefers this sleek Timbuk2 backpack with even more sleeves and compartments for organizing items on the move. It, too, can store “a week away’s worth of clothes and a fat beach read if you’re strategic,” she says. Which is ideal if you’re traveling personal-item-only .

[ Editor’s note: Unfortunately this backpack has become so popular that it is currently sold-out everywhere; it’s possible to register for a restock alert email on the Timbuk2 website. ]

Gregory Rhune 25

The “clown car of personal items” is what writer and film wrangler Maggie Slepian calls this top-loading backpack from hiker-beloved brand Gregory. When she used it as her only luggage item for a four-day trip to the East Coast last fall, it fit a laptop, notebook, sandals, running shoes, rain jacket, jumpsuit, two pairs of leggings, two pairs of shorts, several shirts, toiletries, socks, undergarments, five pairs of headphones (over-ear, noise-canceling earbuds, white-noise only, corded for the plane, and AirPods for Zoom calls), and snacks. Her water bottle was stashed in the stretchy side pocket. I’ll also note that the brand has recently updated this bag with new (and to my eyes more attractive) colorways; the “techno granite” is very sleek.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack

Patagonia’s Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack is “a really good bag,” as Strategist contributing writer Molly Dektar observes . Popular among globe-trotting art world types, it can be carried as either a tote or a backpack, depending on the situation, and it folds into its own internal pocket, for easy storage. It is practical without sacrificing style: “Though it is crafted of black ripstop, it does not scream, ‘I hike!’ and though it has a large number of pockets and adjustable straps, it does not scream, ‘I code!’”

Patagonia Black Hole 25L Daypack

Strategist senior editor Simone Kitchens is a fan of Patagonia’s Black Hole bags too — but she uses this more traditional-looking one. “ There are one zillion separate little pockets and perfectly sized compartments for things like chargers and night guards and passports and AirPods,” she explains, “as well as slim sleeves for a laptop and magazines.” The bag opens at the top, which means things won’t come tumbling out when you need to grab something. And while there’s a high level of organization happening on the inside, the bag has a smooth exterior: “ I quite like that the outside doesn’t look all that tricked out. ”

Fjallraven Kanken Mini

Despite fears of looking like a Scandinavian school child or 2012-era hipster, Strategist writer Dominique Pariso is loyal to her Kanken — and she’s not alone among our staff . “This backpack is so light, so compact, and so durable it really is ideal for stuffing under tiny airplane seats,” she explains. “Plus, you can fit way more stuff inside than seems humanly possible given its petite size.”

The best personal-item cross-bodies and fanny packs

Baggu Medium Nylon Crescent Bag

Baggu’s take on the crescent trend is excellent for travel. I’ve had mine for a couple of years now and would be lost without it at the airport. It’s comfortable to wear, with a highly adjustable strap and two zippered internal pockets for securing your phone, passport, and wallet. The capacity is huge: I can fit a book and water bottle inside and still have room left over for other items. I’ve machine washed it several times with no issue. And while the bag looks smart, especially in the black colorway, it’s also low-key enough to avoid the attention of pickpockets. Hairstylist Teddi Cranford, who has visited Marrakech five times , says that it’s “essential for the souk,” because you can “just easily grab stuff out and zip it back up.”

Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack

Less sporty-looking than the ubiquitous Lululemon belt bag, and constructed from stretchy neoprene fabric that lets you stuff it full if you need to, our favorite fanny pack is perfect for the plane. I’ve got one of these in white and appreciate how minimal it looks. The size also makes it easy to hide under a jacket or sweater.

Are there any other suitcase sizes, really?

carryons for international travel

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Due to my obsession with new passport stamps and cabin preferred luggage, I've gone through carry-on after carry-on, always putting a band-aid on my problems and purchasing non-practical, cheap, and unreliable options. As expected, I've had to find a replacement every couple of years or sooner dependent upon my travel abroad frequency. So, finally I decided to invest my time and money into something that should last me a lifetime of international trips, quite literally speaking. I decided to reach out to Co-Founders Athan Didaskalou and Richard Li at July, an innovator in travel accessories to help assess the components I should be on the hunt for when packing for Europe and beyond.

The Co-Founders went on to say, "The ideal {international} carry-on is designed with the modern traveler in mind—balancing functionality, durability, and style. You shouldn’t have to choose between looking stylish and having functional luggage, so our designs combine both style and practicality, giving you the best of both worlds."

Taking notes from out chat, which I'll touch on more later, I was able to source the very best carry-ons for international travel of 2024. From luxury name brands to, durable diamond-in-the-rough pieces, read on and don't forget your passport!

With the creation of the world’s biggest carry-on, the new Carry On Max, our goal is to offer a bag that not only meets the demands of frequent travel but enhances the overall experience. Featuring a collapsible tote, the Carry On Max truly embodies what the ideal carry-on should be."

Review: "I bought the Monos Hybrid Carry-On Plus. I love it. It rolls exceptionally smoothly, even with a heavy under-seat bag placed on top of it. I enjoy the latch mechanisms and not having to fuss with a zipper. Resetting the lock code was easy-peasy. I was worried that the size might not work as a carry on, but the bag fits perfectly in the overhead compartment of the planes I've been on, and no one at TSA or with the airlines have even suggested it might be too big to carry on. I bought it in black/obsidian and think it looks very sharp. I love it."

Quart Size Bags and Traveling: What You Need to Know

Photo of author

Robert is passionate about traveling, technology, and reading books on his phone.

clear travel bags for carry on

If you’re a frequent traveler, you’ve likely encountered (for better or for worse) quart size bags at some point.

Whether it’s trying to fit all of your liquids and toiletries into that tiny space or attempting to navigate the TSA’s rules for what can and cannot go in it, the quart size bag can be a source of frustration.

In this post, we will break down everything you need to know about quart size bags and their role in travel. From the TSA’s infamous 3-1-1 rule to variations in regulations for different modes of transportation and international travel, we’ve got you covered.

Whether you’re a seasoned jet-setter or just starting to dip your toes into the world of travel, this post will provide all of the information you need to feel confident and prepared when packing your quart size bag.

You may have heard the term “quart size bag” thrown around in the context of travel, but do you know exactly what it refers to? Simply put, a quart size bag is a small, clear plastic bag with the dimensions of 7 inches by 8 inches (or 18 cm by 20 cm). These bags are designed to hold liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

The quart size bag is an essential tool for travelers , as it allows them to easily store and transport these types of items while adhering to regulations set by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

So, what exactly can you put in a quart size bag? These bags are commonly used to store liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are necessary for personal hygiene or grooming. This includes items such as shampoo , conditioner, body wash, lotion, toothpaste, and more.

These items must be placed in the quart size bag in individual containers that hold 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. It’s important to note that the quart size bag must be able to be easily closed and placed in a carry-on bag or checked luggage.

In addition to adhering to regulations, quart size bags can also be a useful tool for staying organized while traveling. By separating liquids and other potentially leaky items into a quart size bag, you can help prevent any messes or spills in your luggage. Plus, having all of your liquids and toiletries in one place can make it easier to find what you need when you’re on the go.

Some travelers even like to use quart size bags to store and transport smaller items, such as chargers and cords, to keep them separate and easily accessible.

clear travel bags for carry on

While quart size bags are the most commonly used option for transporting liquids and other potentially leaky items, they are not the only option. Some travelers prefer to use leak-proof toiletry bags, which come in a range of sizes and styles.

These bags are designed to keep liquids and other items from spilling out, making them a good alternative to quart size bags for those who want a bit more protection. It’s worth noting, however, that the TSA does still have regulations for leak-proof toiletry bags, so be sure to check their guidelines before packing one for your trip.

Now that you know a bit more about quart size bags and their uses, here are a few tips to help you pack yours like a pro:

  • Measure out your liquids: Make sure that all of your liquids and other items are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. It’s a good idea to use a small measuring cup or a set of measuring spoons to ensure that you are within the allowed limits.
  • Use travel-sized containers: To make it easier to adhere to the 3.4-ounce (100-milliliter) limit, consider purchasing travel-sized containers or using small containers that you already have at home. This will also help save space in your quart size bag.
  • Consider using a toiletry bag: While quart size bags are the most common option for packing liquids and other potentially leaky items, some travelers prefer to use toiletry bags for a bit of extra protection. Just be sure to check the TSA’s guidelines for these types of bags before packing one for your trip.
  • Pack your quart size bag last : To avoid any potential messes or spills, it’s a good idea to pack your quart size bag last. This way, you can be sure that all of your liquids and other potentially leaky items are securely contained before you close up your luggage.
  • Keep your quart size bag easily accessible: It’s a good idea to keep your quart size bag in a place that is easily accessible when you are going through security. Some travelers like to keep it in a carry-on bag or in a pocket of their checked luggage for easy access. This will make it easier to remove the bag and place it in a bin for inspection.
  • Label your quart size bag: If you have multiple quart size bags or are traveling with others who also have quart size bags, it can be helpful to label them with your name or initials. This will help ensure that you can easily identify your bag and avoid any mix-ups.

Quart size bags may seem like a small detail in the grand scheme of things, but they can actually be quite important when it comes to travel. By adhering to regulations and properly packing your quart size bag, you can help ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip through security.

Plus, by using a quart size bag to keep your liquids and other potentially leaky items organized, you can help prevent any messes or spills in your luggage. So next time you’re packing for a trip, don’t forget to include a quart size bag in your packing list !

TSA Regulations for quart size bags

When it comes to quart size bags and travel, one of the most well-known regulations is the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. This rule dictates that all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be placed in a quart size bag and must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

The quart size bag must then be placed in a single, clear, plastic, sealable bag that measures approximately 1 quart (or 1 liter). The 3-1-1 rule applies to all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are carried in a carry-on bag or checked luggage.

clear travel bags for carry on

So, what exactly does the 3-1-1 rule mean? The “3” refers to the fact that all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. The “1” refers to the fact that these items must be placed in a single, quart size bag. And the final “1” refers to the fact that each passenger is allowed to bring one quart size bag in their carry-on or checked luggage.

It’s important to note that all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be placed in the quart size bag, even if they are partially used. This includes items such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, and more. The TSA recommends that these items be placed in the quart size bag in a manner that allows for easy inspection.

While the 3-1-1 rule is strictly enforced for most liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes, there are a few exceptions. Medications, baby formula, and breast milk are all allowed in larger quantities and do not need to be placed in a quart size bag. These items may be carried in a carry-on bag or checked luggage and do not count towards the one quart size bag per passenger limit. It’s a good idea to bring a doctor’s note or other documentation for medications, as well as a note from a healthcare professional for baby formula and breast milk.

Here are a few tips to help you adhere to the 3-1-1 rule when packing your quart size bag:

  • Measure out your liquids: As mentioned previously, it’s important to make sure that all of your liquids and other potentially leaky items are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. A small measuring cup or set of measuring spoons can be helpful for ensuring that you are within the allowed limits.
  • Pack your quart size bag last: To avoid any potential messes or spills, it’s a good idea to pack your quart size bag last. This way, you can be sure that all of your liquids and other potentially leaky items are securely contained before you close up your luggage.
  • Keep your quart size bag easily accessible: When going through security, it’s important to keep your quart size bag easily accessible. Some travelers like to keep it in a carry-on bag or in a pocket of their checked luggage for easy access. This will make it easier to remove the bag and place it in a bin for inspection.
  • Know the rules for medications and other exceptions: If you are traveling with medications or other items that are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule, such as baby formula or breast milk, be sure to bring documentation and keep them easily accessible. This will help expedite the security process and avoid any potential delays or issues.

While the 3-1-1 rule primarily applies to carry-on luggage, it is also important to consider when packing checked luggage. Any liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are placed in checked luggage must still adhere to the 3.4-ounce (100-milliliter) limit per item and must be placed in a quart size bag. However, because these items will be placed in the hold of the plane, they are not subject to the one quart size bag per passenger limit. It’s important to note, however, that some airlines may have additional restrictions on what can be placed in checked luggage, so be sure to check with your specific airline before packing.

Variations in travel and quart size bags

While the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule is the most well-known regulation for quart size bags, it is important to note that there may be variations in rules for different modes of transportation and international travel.

Different modes of transportation, such as airplanes, trains, and buses, may have different regulations for quart size bags. For example, some trains and buses may not have the same restrictions on liquids and other potentially leaky items as the TSA. It’s a good idea to check with your specific transportation provider to see what their regulations are for quart size bags and other carry-on items.

It’s also important to note that different countries may have different regulations for quart size bags and other carry-on items. Some countries may have stricter rules for liquids and other potentially leaky items, while others may have more lenient regulations. It’s a good idea to research the specific regulations for the country you will be traveling to before packing your quart size bag.

So, how can you prepare for the potential variations in quart size bag regulations when traveling? Here are a few tips:

  • Research the regulations: Before packing your quart size bag, be sure to research the specific regulations for the mode of transportation and country you will be traveling to. This will help ensure that you are aware of any potential differences in regulations and can pack accordingly.
  • Pack appropriately: Once you know the specific regulations for your trip, be sure to pack your quart size bag appropriately. This may involve leaving certain items at home or purchasing travel-sized versions of your favorite products.
  • Stay informed: Regulations can change at any time, so it’s a good idea to stay informed about the current rules for quart size bags and other carry-on items. This will help ensure that you are always prepared for your travels.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that you are prepared for any variations in quart size bag regulations and can have a smooth and hassle-free trip.

Q&A: All of your quart size bag questions, answered!

Now that we’ve covered the basics of quart size bags and the regulations that surround them, it’s time to answer some commonly asked questions about these handy little bags. Expect much of the same information repeated here but if you have a specific question, feel free to jump straight to it!

While quart size bags are primarily used for transporting liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes, it is possible to bring other items in them as long as they are within the allowed size limits.

For example, you could place small electronic items , such as chargers and cords, in a quart size bag as long as they are not too large and can be easily closed. It’s worth noting, however, that the TSA has specific guidelines for electronic items in carry-on and checked luggage, so be sure to check those guidelines before packing your quart size bag.

While quart size bags are most commonly associated with air travel due to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, they can also be used for other modes of transportation. For example, some trains and buses may have their own regulations for liquids and other potentially leaky items that require the use of a quart size bag. It’s a good idea to check with your specific transportation provider to see what their regulations are for quart size bags and other carry-on items.

According to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, quart size bags must be placed in a carry-on bag or checked luggage. You are not allowed to bring a quart size bag as a standalone item. It’s important to note that while you can bring a quart size bag in either a carry-on bag or checked luggage, there may be restrictions on the items that you can bring in each. For example, certain items, such as sharp objects and certain types of electronics, may only be allowed in checked luggage. Be sure to check the TSA’s guidelines for both carry-on and checked luggage before packing your quart size bag.

According to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, a quart size bag must be placed in a carry-on bag or checked luggage if it contains liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, or pastes, even if it is only partially full. If you have a quart size bag that is partially full and you are not planning on bringing it on your trip, it is a good idea to remove the items from the bag and pack them in a different manner.

Per the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, a quart size bag with liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, or pastes must be placed in a carry-on bag or checked luggage, regardless of whether the bag is sealed and unopened. This is because these items may be inspected and must be readily accessible to security personnel.

As stated by the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, a quart size bag containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, or pastes must be placed in either a carry-on bag or checked luggage, regardless of whether the bag is sealed and unopened. These items are subject to inspection and must be easily accessible to security personnel.

According to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, a quart size bag that contains liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, or pastes and is only partially full may be brought in a carry-on bag as long as it meets the size requirements and all of the items are properly contained. It’s important to note that all items in the quart size bag must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item and must be easily accessible for inspection.

As stated by the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, an empty quart size bag is allowed in a carry-on bag as long as it will not be used to hold liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, or pastes. If the quart size bag will be used for these types of items, it must be placed in either a carry-on bag or checked luggage.

As per the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be placed in a quart size bag and carried in either a carry-on bag or checked luggage, regardless of their intended use. Each item in the quart size bag must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less and readily available for inspection.

All items in the quart size bag must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item and must be easily accessible for inspection. It is important to note that while it is allowed to bring liquids that are not for personal use in a quart size bag, there may be other restrictions on bringing these types of items on a plane. Be sure to check with the TSA and your specific airline before packing these types of items in your quart size bag.

12 Best Personal Item Bags & Underseat Luggage in 2024

Last Updated: August 27, 2024

Six black personal item sized bags, backpacks, and duffels sitting against a concrete wall with moss on it

As a steadfast minimalist one-bag traveler who avoids baggage fees like the plague, I’m pleased to share the best personal item bags of 2024.

I’ll admit it: I’m a bit frugal and curmudgeonly when it comes to paying extra for carry-on or checked luggage.

The money I spend on my plane ticket should mark the end of my airline-related expenses, dang it.

To help you find the right bag, I’ve rigorously tested and reviewed a variety of backpacks, totes, shoulder bags, duffels, and rolling luggage so you don’t have to.

And I’ve stuck to upper-echelon brands like TOM BIHN, GORUCK, Matador, and Zpacks (no cheap knockoffs here).

This buyer’s guide will also discuss the features to consider and which bags will best match your style of traveling.

And toward the end of this post, you’ll find a summary of permissible luggage sizes for various popular airlines.

Best Personal Item Bags of 2024

• Types of Bags • Ultralight & Ultra-Efficient Backpack: Zpacks Bagger ULTRA 25 • Full-Featured & Comfortable Backpack: TOM BIHN Techonaut 30 • Lightweight Packable Daypack: Matador Freerain22 • Camera + Tech + Electronics Pack: Lowepro Flipside BP 300 AW III • Durable & Functional Duffel: GORUCK Aviator Kit Bag 2.0 • Minimalist Ultralight Duffel: UltraLiteSacks • High-End Personal Item Tote: Mission Workshop Drift • Tried-and-True Shoulder Bag: Timbuk2 Messenger • Ultimate Shoulder Sling: Peak Design Everyday Sling • Simple & Stylish Briefcase: TOM BIHN Daylight • Hard Cover Luggage with Wheels: Samsonite Novaire • Mini Rolling Soft Luggage: Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside • Side-by-Side Comparison Table • Why I Travel with Only a Personal Item Bag • Factors We Consider When Choosing Products • Final Thoughts: Best Personal Item Bags of 2024

Types of Bags

Not all bags are the same.

Not all travelers are the same.

Each bag on this list has specific pros & cons to consider.

Here are the most popular styles of underseat luggage:

I like to move nimbly when I travel, and a wheeled bag or duffel makes me less agile.

I fit everything I need conveniently onto my back, so that’s how I roll.

Backpacks make life on the go much more doable.

I understand some people can’t wear backpacks because of back pain or other health issues.

Consider a duffel bag, tote, or wheeled suitcase instead if that’s the case.

Duffel bags are a great no-fuss solution to personal item-sized bag travel.

A duffel is ideal when you need extra space to bring a few extra things outside your main luggage.

They also help maximize your storage space compared to the other two options above.

A duffel can be slightly more annoying to carry than a backpack; however, you can fit a wider variety of stuff inside one since they’re reasonably malleable and fit into oddly shaped spaces (like beneath airplane seats).

I recently traveled to Vietnam for a month with only a messenger bag.

I’d have chosen no bag at all if I didn’t need my laptop and other work essentials.

I could fit my laptop, a change of clothes, and some toiletries in my messenger bag, but nothing else.

But not everyone is a minimalist travel junkie.

Even so, if you still have an extra bag in addition to your carry-on, a messenger is a quality solution and should fit all the stuff you need during your flight.

We’ve included some top-shelf options for wheeled mini carry-on bags that’ll fit under the seat ahead of you.

Soft- or hard-roller bags are best for those wanting more protection for their belongings or anyone who doesn’t want to carry a backpack or duffel bag for long periods.

If you’re flying frequently, however, a hard case may not be the best style of bag for you.

A roller case is awkward to carry, and not every destination is roller luggage friendly.

I’ve visited bustling locations where this luggage style simply wouldn’t work.

Ultralight Personal Item Backpack Zpacks Bagger ULTRA 25

Black Zpacks brand backpack sitting on the concrete with wood panels in the background

MSRP : $249 Capacity : 25L Weight : 10.7 oz

Zpacks is far and away my favorite ultralight minimalist gear brand, as they’re consistently raising the bar for lightweight and functional equipment.

The Bagger ULTRA 25 is a backpack designed for fast and light trips, as it’s made from waterproof ULTRA fabric and weighs in at a minuscule 10.7 ounces.

This is my go-to travel backpack for trips I take without my bulky camera gear .

For trips where I do bring my camera along, I use the slightly more spacious and well-padded TOM BIHN Techonaut 30, the following recommendation on this list.

Between the two bags, I slightly prefer my Zpacks.

Thanks to its super durable, lightweight, and waterproof ULTRA material, the Bagger is perfect for ultralight gear nerds or anyone aiming to cut their pack weight and brave the elements.

It’s an incredibly functional and versatile option for personal-item-sized bag travel, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Why We Like the Bagger ULTRA 25: It’s as lightweight a backpack as you’ll find at 25 liters. It’s completely waterproof, has dual water bottle holders, and is surprisingly comfortable to haul, considering its lightweight shoulder straps.

What to Keep in Mind: This isn’t the most visually appealing bag, and it’s not cheap either.

Full-Featured & Super Comfortable Backpack TOM BIHN Techonaut 30

Black Tom Bihn brand travel backpack on a wood floor

MSRP : $392 Capacity : 30L Weight : 2 lb 9 oz

The TOM BIHN Techonaut 30 is a 30-liter backpack ideal for digital nomads like myself or for one-bag travelers who crave the best gear.

Made from high-quality, water-resistant materials, it features a padded back panel and cushy shoulder straps for maximum comfort.

It can also be converted into a shoulder/duffel bag by purchasing an Absolute Shoulder Strap.

I love this bag’s isolated laptop compartment and the abundance of well-placed pockets that help keep travelers organized.

It’s a well-balanced bag that’s effortless to wear, easy to adjust, and can haul significant weight comfortably thanks to its internal frame.

My one nitpick is its zippered water bottle pocket, which can get a bit tight when the bag is fully packed.

I’d have preferred a more accessible pocket (or two) as you’ll find in the Bagger ULTRA, but I understand entirely TOM BIHN keeping to their sleek and zipped-up style.

All in all, this is a heck of a bag.

Why We Like the Techonaut 30: It’s an incredibly versatile, comfortable, stylish, and functional bag that can also serve as a duffel. We think it’s the perfect pack to consider if you’re pondering becoming a one-bag traveler.

What to Keep in Mind: The nearly $400 price tag is high, but think of this bag as a decades-long travel investment.

Packable Daypack Matador Freerain22

Black packable backpack with a Matador logo against cement steps

MSRP : $100 Capacity : 22L Weight : 10.6 oz

The waterproof Matador Freerain22 packable daypack has a tiny footprint when compressed and can be stashed away in your carry-on or checked luggage.

It’s perfect for someone who needs space for extra items on the return trip and wants weatherproof protection when exploring.

Although small and lightweight, this bag packs a punch.

Its 22-liter capacity is excellent for carrying all your necessities, whether in-flight or as an around-town daypack.

It is, however, on the small side for single-bag travel, so look elsewhere if you’re only taking one bag.

Much like any other packable daypack, the Freerain22 forgoes padding on the back panel and shoulder straps to maximize its compression capabilities.

No, this bag won’t be the most comfortable on the list, but it is the most packable.

Why We Like the Freerain22: This bag packs down very small and can function as a daypack or a vessel to haul around extra stuff you accumulate on the road. It’s completely waterproof and has an impressive set of features.

What to Keep in Mind: There is zero back padding, and the shoulder straps are thin mesh; this isn’t designed to be the most comfortable bag in the world.

Camera + Electronics + Tech Backpack Lowepro Flipside BP 300 AW III

Black and grey camera gear backpack

MSRP : $179 Capacity : 27L Weight : 3 lb 3 oz

Depending on where and why I’m traveling, I like to keep my fragile gadgets close at hand.

Cameras, lenses, chargers, laptops, and tablets all deserve a safe and secure home during my wanderings.

If you pack expensive cameras and tech gear like me, look no further than this beauty.

Popular among photographers and videographers, the Lowepro Flipside BP 300 AW III keeps gear safe and snug without unnecessary frills that add to its size.

Its padding is generous but not cumbersome, and its back panel zipper access to the main compartment is an unconventional yet effective feature.

For rare trips that require me to bring all of my cameras, lenses, and tripods, I’ll pack my tech gear in this bag and throw my clothes and other belongings in my Bagger ULTRA 25.

Why We Like the Flipside BP 300 AW III: From its smooth zippers to its ample (but not bulky) padding, we love every single feature on the Flipside. This is an extremely well-made bag that will thrive for photographers and videographers.

What to Keep in Mind: This pack’s main compartment is accessed through the back of the pack. For larger photography setups, consider a bigger bag (like the Flipside 500 AW II ).

Durable & Functional Duffel Bag GORUCK Aviator Kit Bag 2.0

Black duffel bag resting on a park bench

MSRP : $150 Capacity : 32L Weight : 2 lb 9 oz

Pro travelers who need more features than the UltraLiteSacks duffel listed below should check out the GORUCK Aviator Kit Bag 2.0 for their next adventure.

It’s a sturdy and practical piece that’ll thrive during your travels, everyday life, and anywhere between.

This duffel is made from burly 1000D Cordura nylon and sports three exterior and three interior zipper pockets (six total) to keep your gear organized and accessible during travel.

It’s protected by a ‘You Break It, We Fix It’ guarantee, though it’s so durable, I doubt you’ll ever need it.

Though I don’t use my Aviator Kit Bag for one-bag travel (I definitely could), it has become my all-time favorite gym bag.

It’s remarkably durable and has the perfect amount of internal storage to stash my beverages, shoes, protein powder, extra clothing, and other odds and ends.

I love it so much that I’m actively seeking out my next piece of GORUCK gear.

Why We Like the Aviator Kit Bag 2.0: In terms of build quality, durability, functionality, and attention to detail, it doesn’t get much better than GORUCK. If you like traveling with a personal item duffel bag, this is the one for you.

What to Keep in Mind: GORUCK doesn’t offer free shipping, no matter how much money you spend.

Minimalist Ultralight Duffel Bag UltraLiteSacks

Black duffel bag made from ULTRA material and an ULTRALITESACKS logo

MSRP : $149 Capacity : 35L Weight : 11.4 oz

Like the Zpacks Bagger, the UltraLikeSacks duffel is made from space-age ULTRA fabric.

And while this bag doesn’t offer all of the fancy features of the GORUCK duffel above, it’s still very functional for use as a carry-on or under-seat bag.

It’ll thrive for those who need a lightweight duffel that can haul serious loads.

I’m visiting Japan next winter, and I plan to use this bag to pack all of my ski apparel — gloves, insulated pants, puffy jacket, collapsible poles, boots — and will slide it underneath the seat in front of me.

Certain bags serve specific purposes in life, and this one’s calling is a gear hauler.

This is a no-frills duffel, which begs the question: why is it 150 bucks?

Well, you’re paying for cutting-edge materials, impeccable attention to detail, and hand-made-in-the-USA build quality.

This bag shouldn’t fray, tear, or explode when stuffing it, and it’s as lightweight and packable as you could ask for.

Why We Like the UltraLiteSacks Duffel: It’s just like our favorite ditty bag but jumbo-sized and fitted with handles and straps. It’s incredibly lightweight, fully waterproof, and will pack down into your main bag with ease.

What to Keep in Mind: With one main compartment and zero frills, this duffel is as minimalist as they come.

High-End Tote Mission Workshop Drift

Mission Workshop Drift travel tote

MSRP : $335 Capacity : 28L Weight : 2 lb 13 oz

What can I say?

I’m a sucker for top-shelf products that are made in the U.S.A.

Just like the Aviator Kit Bag I mentioned earlier, this functional tote from Mission Workshop offers second-to-none quality from a brand that keeps business in America and supports hard-working fabricators.

The Drift is tailor-made for professionals who demand performance from everything in life, including the bags they carry.

This tote will stash away your electronics, clothes, travel necessities, and other fixings in its array of thoughtful pockets and sleeves.

Versatile totes like this can be carried like a briefcase, slung over your shoulder like a duffel, and (you guessed it) slide underneath the airplane seat in front of you.

So, why not take all that money you’ll save on baggage fees and invest in a slick bag like this?

Why We Like the Drift: We’re gear snobs who value attention to detail and handmade products from high-end materials; this bag checks all the boxes for us. It’s a technical work of art and will last for a very long time.

What to Keep in Mind: It’s pretty expensive, but just like the TOM BIHN Techonaut , you’re getting an exceptional bag that’s made in America.

Tried-and-True Shoulder Bag Timbuk2 Messenger Bag

Red and black Timbuk2 brand messenger bag

MSRP : $129 Capacity : 25L Weight : 1 lb 11 oz

I considered traveling “bagless” on a recent trip to Vietnam, but I still needed something to hold my laptop and carry-on items.

I purchased a cheap knockoff messenger bag and quickly regretted not grabbing this Timbuk2 instead.

I won’t name names, but the knockoff bag was frumpy and dug painfully into my shoulder.

Reviews of the Timbuk2 Messenger told a different story, however: It’s comfy to wear, looks fantastic, and puts a little extra glide in your stride. It pays to buy quality.

Those who travel frequently for work would find a messenger bag like this perfect for hauling their laptop, tablet, cords, chargers, and other mobile office essentials.

Pair it with a well-packed overhead carry-on, and you’ll be in great shape.

Why We Like the Timbuk2 Messenger Bag: It comes in a variety of different sizes and colors, so you can pick the perfect match to suit your travel style. It’s reasonably priced, weather-resistant, and has top-notch internal organization.

What to Keep in Mind: It’s hard to find any nitpicks with this bag!

Ultimate Shoulder Sling Peak Design Everyday Sling

Blue shoulder sling for underseat carry on travel

MSRP : $120 Capacity : 6L Weight : 1 lb 3 oz

Being a minimalist and writing about minimalist gear can be challenging.

Not wanting to be weighed down by my possessions is constantly at odds with all the nifty minimalist gadgets and gear I found while researching these articles.

That rings especially true with this shoulder sling from Peak Design.

The Everyday Sling is a sleek and stylish shoulder sling that keeps your EDC essentials and valuables close at hand, safe from the elements, and sitting comfortably on the small of your back.

Savvy travelers could wear the Everyday Sling around their waist and rock a backpack as they board their flight to avoid baggage fees.

Why not try? Doing so could add a few extra liters of storage to your minimalist packing setup.

Why We Like the Everyday Sling: We lug mirrorless cameras around when we travel, so we appreciate products that protect our expensive gear. This rock-solid crossbody sling comes in three sizes and is protected by a lifetime warranty.

What to Keep in Mind: At six liters, this is the smallest bag on this list. Don’t expect it to hold much more than a camera, tablet, snacks, and other small travel essentials.

Simple & Stylish Briefcase TOM BIHN Daylight

Tom Bihn Daylight briefcase

MSRP : $93 Capacity : 8L Weight : 12.7 oz

TOM BIHN makes its second appearance on this list with its stellar Daylight ultralight briefcase.

That’s because this bag is well-designed and functional and suitable for travel, work, and trips to the coffee shop.

The Daylight’s main compartment and multiple organizing pockets keep your businessy stuff exactly where you need it.

With comfy straps, well-placed pockets, and a lightweight design, you’ll glide around airports with ease.

Much like the Timbuk2 Messenger Bag, I’d recommend the Daylight for digital nomads and those who embark on frequent work trips.

Pair it with one of TOM BIHN’s exceptional carry-on travel backpacks if you’re feeling especially frisky.

Why We Like the Daylight: What’s not to love? We’re big TOM BIHN fans, and this bag highlights their commitment to practical, well-made travel gear. It’ll work great for coffee shop hopping with your laptop, tablet, headphones, and other essentials.

What to Keep in Mind: At the time of writing this, the Daylight is unfortunately out of stock. Sign up to get notified when it’s available again.

Hard Cover Luggage with Wheels Samsonite Novaire Wheeled Underseater

Samsonite Novaire Wheeled Underseater

MSRP : $220 Capacity : Not listed Weight : 6 lb 12 oz

Do you need extra protection for your belongings or have trouble carrying backpacks or shoulder bags?

If so, a classic roller bag might be the solution. This Samsonite Novaire Wheeled Underseater is a shining example of mobile hardside style.

It has all the classic design features of a roller carry-on, but it’s minified.

The Novaire fits under most airline seats while taking full advantage of every last square inch allowed by travel regulations.

Yeah, it’s a bit like a tiny tank, but that can be a good thing on the road.

Because it’s sturdy, rigid, and has wheels, you will sacrifice some space inside the bag to adhere to personal item dimensions requirements.

That said, it’ll work wonders for those who don’t want the strain of a backpack, duffel, or messenger bag.

Why We Like the Novaire: Wheeled underseat luggage is hard to come by, but Samsonite has executed it well. This bag has integrated USB ports, a feature you won’t find on any other bag on this list.

What to Keep in Mind: At 6.8 pounds, this is the heaviest bag on the list (and it’s also the most rigid). It might be a tight squeeze under the seat in front of you when fully packed.

Mini Rolling Luggage Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside underseat travel luggage

MSRP : $170 Capacity : 26L Weight : 5 lb 8 oz

Like the Samsonite above, many people choose this style of roll-around bag because it’s often more convenient and comfy than totes, backpacks, and duffels that hang off the body.

But unlike the rigid Novaire, the Maxlite 5 is soft-sided and can be shaped and flattened as needed.

Despite its soft sides, the TravelPro Maxlite still offers plenty of protection.

It comes in a compact, 5-pound version that slides easily under airline seats and a spacious 9-pound model that should trigger gate fees on many airlines.

Choose your size carefully.

If I were torn between the hard-sided Samsonite and the soft-sided Travelpro, I’d lean towards the latter.

As long as you don’t absolutely beat up your bag, hard-sided carry-on luggage can be a bit overkill.

Oh, and did I mention the soft-sided roller is half the price?

Why We Like the Maxlite 5 Softside: Assuming you don’t overpack it, the Maxlite 5 Softside should fit like a glove underneath the seat in front of you. It’s well-reviewed, priced to sell, and backed by a lifetime warranty.

What to Keep in Mind: Like the Samsonite above, this bag will be a bit heavier and bulkier than a backpack, messenger bag, tote, or duffel.

Side-by-Side Comparison Table

Why i travel with only a personal item bag.

Black minimalist pack sitting on a metal light rail bench

I choose to travel with less. Less stuff means less weight dragging me down.

That makes it easier to navigate crowded airports or to flag down my Uber.

I shudder at the sight of folks pulling their entire wardrobe around in a 50+ pound monstrosity on wheels.

What’s the secret of being a light and nimble traveler?

Bring. Less. Stuff.

Obvious, yes, but packing light isn’t always easy to execute.

Years ago, I could be seen lugging around an 80-liter behemoth, but eventually, I embraced a minimalist lifestyle, and everything fell into place.

I recently returned from Europe after six weeks carrying only a 25-liter bag.

I now save significant time and money by never paying gate fees for a bag.

I use the extra cash to treat myself to better meals and memorable travel experiences.

And I don’t miss the time I used to waste chasing lost baggage or standing shoulder-to-shoulder around the luggage carousel, hoping my bag would emerge in one piece.

The ‘secret’ of being a nimble traveler is to always avoid checking your luggage.

Commit to fitting everything you need in your overhead compartment bag or the personal item luggage by your feet.

“Easier said than done,” you may say, but try it the next time you fly.

It’s liberating.

Factors We Considered When Choosing Products

What qualifies a bag for our ‘best of’ list?

After getting our hands on several products, putting them through their paces, scouring numerous forums, product reviews, and videos, we decided to use the following criteria:

Size & Dimensions

First and foremost, carry-on bags must fit in the space regulations allow.

Specifically, a “personal items” handbag, backpack, or purse must fit under the seat in front of you, not in the overhead bin.

Some budget airlines measure your bag at the gate by testing whether it fits inside an official sizing slot.

If it doesn’t fit, your only options are to pay a hefty gate fee to bring it or to leave the bag behind.

Here are the maximum allowed sizes for personal item bags for airlines that charge for a carry-on:

  • Frontier : 18” x 14” x 8”
  • Spirit : 18” x 14” x 8”
  • United : 17” x 10” x 9”
  • JetBlue : 17” x 13” x 8”
  • Allegiant : 16” x 15” x 7”
  • Norwegian : 15” x 12” x 8”
  • Wizz Air : 16” x 12” x 8”
  • Ryanair : 16” x 10” x 8”
  • Easyjet : 18” x 14” x 8”

Note : Before you travel, confirm the current allowed sizes for the airline(s) you’ll be using. Specifications and policies sometimes change. The folks at NerdWallet created this useful policy guide  if you have more questions.

Airlines that don’t charge for carry-ons are a bit more lenient towards the size of your item as long as it fits under the seat ahead of you.

For these airlines, having a carry-on and a personal item is convenient because it may give you just enough cargo space to prevent the need to check a bag.

Consider the weight of your empty bag.

The less your empty bag weighs, the less it contributes to the overall weight you’ll handle as you travel.

Your feet and shoulders must endure every extra ounce or pound you drag around the globe, so put your luggage on a diet and leave your barbells at home.

Materials/Durability

A bag is only as good as its components.

That’s why I picked bags made from proven backpack fabrics that will withstand abuse.

I also preferred double-stitching, YKK zippers, and heavy-duty puncture-resistant fabrics.

The most durable bags on this list are the TOM BIHN Techonaut, the GORUCK Aviator Kit Bag 2.0, and the Samsonite Novaire Underseater.

The least durable bags are the Matador Freerain22, UltraLiteSacks duffel, and the TOM BIHN Daylight briefcase.

 Weather Resistance

I’ve dragged my stuff through a blizzard in Detroit, a downpour in Budapest, and a sandstorm in Africa.

At the very least, choose a bag rated as water- and weather-resistant.

And even with a sturdy bag, I still sometimes wrap some of my more delicate stuff in a plastic bag before it goes into the luggage.

The best bags provide more peace of mind.

The savings from buying a flimsy knockoff bag vanish as soon as that cheap bag splits open halfway around the world, and you have to replace it.

Travel light, but always bring the peace of mind that comes from spending a bit more to get a higher-quality product.

Which Underseat Travel Bag is Best for You in 2024?

Man seated in an airplane with a backpack between his legs and a tag that says "CABIN GUARANTEED"

It’s your turn to decide on one of these best personal item travel bags for 2024.

Will it be an ultra-lightweight and efficient Zpacks Bagger ULTRA?

A simple and stylish briefcase from TOM BIHN?

A futuristic tote from Mission Workshop?

Choose carefully because whatever you choose will be your joined-at-the-hip travel companion for the next few thousand miles.

And remember: when traveling, it’s best to avoid nasty surprises.

Do your research and only buy bags that will fit comfortably in the sizing slots of the airlines you actually use.

And travel light.

Surprise yourself with how little ‘stuff’ it takes to travel comfortably.

Finally, combine the money you save by avoiding luggage gate fees with the time you save by skipping the luggage carousels and treat yourself by splurging on the good stuff the next time you travel.

Hey Josh, You overpacked your bag and you were flying a budget airline knowing the rules. Why is it Milwaukee’s fault? pffft

Hi Josh thanks for such a wonderful and useful block. I’m looking for traveling southeast Asia very light but as a photographer I’m wondering about my tripod attached on a carry on back to put underneath of the seat in front of me, so you have any experience with tripod in a carry-on luggage ? Thanks in advance

13 Travel Makeup Bags to Keep Your Beauty Essentials Secure and Organized

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The best travel makeup bags keep your beauty and skincare essentials secure and organized while in transit, and help protect the rest of your belongings from accidental spills and leaks . A few years ago, I ruined one of my favorite tote bags after a bottle of foundation broke in my old makeup bag and spilled everywhere. There goes my tote bag and my overly priced foundation. After that, I decided to invest in a protective, durable travel makeup bag that could handle bumpy car rides, long-haul flights , and a reckless suitcase toss or two from TSA. The best options are also roomy enough to fit a vacation's worth of makeup while still being compact enough to neatly fit in your carry-on or personal item . And bonus points go to the cosmetic cases and bags that feature smart pockets or loops to keep small products like brushes, lipsticks , and eyeliner in place.

Below, we've rounded up the best makeup bags for travelers to pack on their next trip, including top-rated bestsellers across the internet and some tried-and-true picks from our editors. Whether you need a small pouch for a weekend's worth of essentials or a well-organized case for a destination wedding , we have a cosmetic bag that will hold everything you need. Your days of rummaging through a never-ending black hole of a makeup bag are over.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Our top picks:

  • Best overall: Bagsmart hanging toiletry bag
  • Best for durability: Calpak clear cosmetic case
  • Best for organization: Parallelle makeup bag
  • Best for extended trips: Relavel cosmetic case
  • Best for short trips: Dagne Dover Mila organizer

Without an organized cosmetic case, doing your makeup often involves rummaging around in a bag trying to find everything. This Lay-n-Go bag, though, is a dream come true. Instead of having to dump out all your products, the bag opens up by way of drawstrings, and can be laid out as a circle on any surface, allowing every product to be on display. When finished, pull the drawstring back together and watch it transform into the size of a clutch. It also comes with a zip pocket for storage and elastic brush loops, so nothing goes rolling off the bathroom counter.

For travelers who have no desire to pack light, Calpak's oversized cosmetics case will keep all your favorite products neat and visible, thanks to its full transparent exterior. The clear makeup bag unzips fully so each side can lay flat, and has an extra mesh interior pocket to hold smaller items. Senior commerce editor Madison Flager uses the large version for extended trips (closed, it's as big as a sheet of printer paper, and several inches wide), but we recommend the medium size for weeklong vacations. These bags are roomy enough to be used to hold makeup products on one side and skincare essentials on the other, allowing everything you need for your travel beauty routine to be kept in one place. Plus, a top handle makes for easy carrying or looping over a bathroom hook.

When I arrive at a hotel or an Airbnb, I usually have to empty my entire makeup bag and lay everything out on the bathroom counter just to find what I need. Earlier this summer, I finally discovered the ultimate solution to keeping my beauty products organized and easy to find: the Parallelle Carry-On makeup bag. The standout feature of the Parallelle makeup bag is its foldable shape. After you unzip the bag, each side can be pulled down to lie flat, allowing you to easily see all of your products at once. It's designed to keep each product secured in an upright position, again making them easy to spot and reducing the risk of any spills. The medium-size case features 16 wall pockets, 4 elastic mesh pouches, and 3 adjustable compartments. The small wall pockets are ideal for holding slim products like makeup brushes, mascara, eyeliner, lip liner, or lipstick. The four elastic mesh pouches hold loose items, like blush, bronzer, and pressed powder. And the adjustable compartments are where you can stash bottles and containers, like foundation, makeup remover, and setting spray. There's a place for everything—and I mean everything.

An affordable option that's great for long family vacations , this Bagsmart hanging toiletry bag will fit all of your makeup products and toiletries in one. Hang it on the back of the bathroom door when you arrive and you’ll stay organized the rest of the trip. There are four separate clear sections that make finding what you need easy and prevent liquid products like shampoo and conditioner from spilling onto your makeup. Plus, the case itself has a top handle to make transport even easier.

This lightweight cosmetic bag from MZ Wallace is the perfect size for most any getaway. It’s large enough to store all of the makeup products you’d need for a week and features an interior pocket and lining to protect it against any leaks. When you’re not using it to pack your favorite makeup products, use it as an emergency kit to store beauty essentials at the office or in your gym bag.

Image may contain: Furniture, Bed, and Mattress

This ultra-soft, spacious bag couldn't be cuter—and its just $10. Its roomy enough to hold makeup and skincare products for a one-to-two week trip, but its soft cotton material allows it to be compressed flatter when its not totally full. It features two zippers that open the top of the bag completely, allowing you to see all of your products at once, and a carrying handle. Inside, you'll find a zippered mesh pocket to hold brushes or beauty accessories like tweezers or an eyelash curler.

On the outside, this Béis bag looks like any other makeup bag; inside, it's obvious it was designed by someone who's traveled with a drugstore full of makeup once or twice. Inside, there's a larger-than-average compact mirror that slips out, a double-sided detachable brush holder to keep eye and lip brushes separate, and smaller compartments to store odds and ends, plus a spacious main compartment. Even better, the water-resistant lining makes it easy to wipe clean.

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, and Purse

Another bestseller from travel-friendly brand Bagsmart is this puffy, water-resistant cosmetic pouch. We love this one for its interior pockets that are designed to hold circular products like blush, bronzer, and pressed powder. There's also a slim side pocket to hold brushes or lip liners, and enough room in the main compartment for palettes, foundation, and setting spray. Choose from several colors, including this light pink, beige, blue, purple, gray, and black.

Image may contain: First Aid, and Box

This Amazon bestseller is another great option for the travelers who don't plan to skip any steps in their beauty routine or are headed to a destination wedding or other special occasion where full glam is order. The affordable and durable case has racked up nearly 20,000 five-star ratings and hundreds of rave reviews. It scores major points for organization, with several adjustable dividers that let you keep all of your products secure and separated. There are also slim pockets to hold makeup brushes and and a zippered compartment for eyeshadow palettes. The thoughtfully-designed case is waterproof and shockproof, so it can handle some major bumps and drops.

Image may contain: Brush, Device, Tool, and Toothbrush

For shorter trips or weekends away, Flager reaches for this transparent bag from Stasher. This compact pouch is made of a sturdy platinum silicone that protects bottles and liquids from breaking, and it features a leakproof seal. What we love most about this lightweight bag is how versatile it is; when you're not using it for makeup essentials, pack it with shower products, tech accessories, or jewelry. Another pro: It's dishwasher and heat safe.

Image may contain: Furniture, and Cushion

Our editors regularly turn to Cuyana for its high-quality leather totes and crossbody bags . Traveler editor Erika Owen has been using this leather set for years, and its still looks good as new. It comes with two chic cases: one large bag that fits foundation, eyeshadow palettes, and skincare essentials as well as a smaller bag ideal for makeup brushes or tools like an eyelash curler. Both bags feature a leather interior that you can easily wipe clean with a damp cloth after any accidental makeup spills. The set is available in a variety of colors, including blush, sapphire, red, burnt orange, ecru, and classic black.

Image may contain: Furniture

This small-but-mighty toiletry organizer with a carrying handle is ideal for quick one- to two-day getaways when you're packing the basics. It's made with Dagne Dover's signature soft neoprene material that's conveniently water resistant. The inside is completely lined with mesh and allows makeup products like foundation, setting spray, and serums to stand straight up in their own dividers, making them easier to find. There are also small loops on the side for mascara , lip gloss, or makeup brushes.

Away designs some of our editors' go-to suitcases , prioritizing durability and smart features. The brand's cosmetic bag is equally as easy to love, with enough room to store all of the makeup and beauty must-haves you'll need for a week's vacation (or longer). The main compartment is made of water-resistant nylon with a coated wipeable interior and offers transparent pockets that make finding what you need simple. The standout feature of this case is the detachable brush roll that snaps to the top lid to keep makeup brushes organized and easy to grab.

27 Things You Should Always Pack in Your Carry-on Bag

P acking your carry-on bag for a flight is exciting – but it can also be overwhelming. With a little planning and a concise list of airport and in-flight essentials, you can maximize space and be prepared for your journey.

To help you decide what to pack in your carry-on bag, our team compiled this list of must-have items. Download the packing list here to use while you prep for your next trip, then read on to learn more about what to pack.

Carry-on packing list

Travel wallet, passport holder, toiletry bag, tsa-approved liquids bag and compliant containers, prescription medications, glasses case, travel pillow, packing cubes, tech organizer, luggage tracker, zippered pouches and reusable silicone bags, mini clip bag, hand sanitizer, bluetooth wireless adapter, wired earbuds or headphones, e-reader or a great book, travel adapter/converter, travel first-aid kit, reusable water bottle, activities or games, light jacket, change of clothing.

Protect your credit cards and cash with an RFID wallet like the Travelon RFID Blocking Single Zip Wallet , which prevents scammers from wirelessly stealing your personal information. This travel wallet is especially useful since it can also hold most smartphones.

If you're traveling internationally, an option like the TIGARI Passport Holder can protect your travel document and make it easy to locate in your carry-on bag. You'll need access to your passport at airport security, when you board the plane and when you're filling out entry forms, so keep the passport holder as well as a pen within reach. Once you arrive at your destination, put the passport wallet somewhere safe at your lodging or – if you feel inclined to keep it with you – stow it in your travel purse, belt bag or backpack to ensure it's safe while you explore.

Pack your toiletry bag in your carry-on so you can easily freshen up and so that you'll have essentials like toothpaste and deodorant in the event your checked luggage is lost in transit. Also consider packing toiletries that are useful for travel (particularly the dry air on planes), even if they're not part of your daily routine at home.

U.S. News senior travel editor Marisa Méndez recommends including a facial moisturizer and a body lotion in your toiletry bag. "My skin always dries out on flights and it's nice to have something to soothe my skin," she says.

"I always love having facial spray to freshen up after the flight," says Elizabeth Von Tersch , also a senior travel editor at U.S. News. She always keeps one in her purse. " Mario Badescu and Evian are great." These facial sprays help to moisturize your skin after the drying environment on a plane or give you a little midday pick-me-up.

When packing your carry-on bag for a flight, you'll want to have a clear quart-sized bag that meets Transportation Security Administration guidelines for liquids and gels. Some Dopp kits or toiletry bags include a removable bag for travel-size liquids, or you can buy this reusable TSA-approved clear bag on Amazon . Put any liquids or gels you're traveling with in this bag, including shampoo, lotion, liquid makeup items and hand sanitizer.

Keep in mind that all liquids and gels must be in travel-size bottles or containers measuring 3.4 ounces or less. Remember: You'll need to remove this clear quart-sized bag from your carry-on bag at security, so consider packing it in an external pocket or an easy-to-find spot in your carry-on suitcase. To learn more about TSA regulations, consult our article about what is allowed in a carry-on .

Never stow prescription medications in checked baggage : If luggage is lost or delayed, replacing these medications while traveling can be extremely challenging or even impossible. If you take multiple medications, consider a travel pill sorter like the EZY Dose Pill Organizer , available for about $5 on Amazon.

Whether you wear glasses for vision correction or you're packing your favorite pair of sunglasses, keeping them protected while stowed in your carry-on is essential. If you're bringing multiple pairs, a case like the foldable Dagne Dover Remi Glasses Case can hold up to three pairs, or the Lug Eyeglass Holder & Mini Pill Case works well for eyeglasses and contacts.

Resting throughout your journey can help you feel refreshed when you reach your destination and make the time pass a little quicker. But nothing can (literally) cramp your style like a stiff neck from sleeping wrong. Choose a comfortable neck pillow for travel like the top-rated Cabeau Evolution S3 or the MLVOC Travel Pillow (less than $30 on Amazon). For a travel pillow that doubles as a packing cube, consider the Tube pillow , which holds up to three days' worth of clothing.

Packing cubes aren't just for organizing clothing and shoes. Maximize space in your carry-on bag with these handy travel compartments . While Eagle Creek's PACK-IT line features the top-rated compression packing cubes on the market, many travelers also swear by the Veken Packing Cubes , which are usually available for $20 or less on Amazon. To maximize space even more, consider Lug's compression packing cubes .

If you're planning to travel with jewelry, watches or items that would be difficult to replace, be sure to put these in your carry-on bag, as checked items run the risk of being misplaced. For jewelry, a compact case that is easy to spot like the Lug Mini Swizzle is ideal for rings, cufflinks or earrings.

It's easy to let your charging cords get lost at the bottom of your bag or get your headphones tangled somewhere in your tote. A handy tech organizer such as the CALPAK Tech Organizer or the BAGSMART Tech Organizer , with zippered compartments and sections for specific cords, can help reduce tangled messes (and the need for you to search for your essentials in a tight airplane cabin).

Even though you'll have your carry-on bag with you, it's still a good idea to have a luggage tracker like an Apple AirTag or a Tile Pro securely attached to your bag. In the event you and your bag get separated, you'll be able to track down where you parted ways (because when you're jet-lagged it's easy to be a bit absent-minded).

Smaller than packing cubes, zippered pouches and silicone bags like the Stasher Silicone Reusable Storage Bags are perfect for storing everything from snacks to scrunchies. If traveling with family, consider different colored pouches for each traveler's items so you can easily tell them apart without removing everything from the bag.

Get a handy little bag with a carabiner clip, such as the CALPAK Luka Key Pouch , to securely attach to the outside of your bag for quick-grab items like gum, hand sanitizer or individual travel wipes . Once you're at your destination, you can clip it on a belt loop or use the elastic band to slide it on your wrist for your room key, lip gloss and other small essentials.

360 Kiosk Email : Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Let's face it – traveling can introduce your body to a host of unwanted germs. Carrying a bottle of travel hand sanitizer will keep your hands clean on the go, even if there's not a bathroom nearby. To disinfect surfaces like airplane tray tables, arm rests or tables, consider having a pack of disinfecting wipes at your disposal as well.

During a flight, the low humidity and high altitude can have a drying effect on your skin and lips. To combat the dry air, consider packing a hydrating lip balm like this new stick option by Aquaphor . What's more, if you choose a balm over a liquid moisturizer, you won't need to store this product in your clear TSA-approved liquids bag.

In-flight entertainment can help your travel day go faster, but being tethered to the seatback with wired headphones can feel a bit constricting. Plus, you may have to unplug to let your seat mates in or out. Avoid those troubles and connect your wireless headphones to the in-flight system with Twelve South's AirFly ($35 or less on Amazon), which wirelessly transmits audio via Bluetooth.

If you'd prefer to connect directly to the in-flight entertainment to watch a movie (or maybe just tune out your seatmates), buy some inexpensive wired earbuds like this well-rated set by Jogteg . You can keep them in your carry-on so you're always ready, even on flights where they don't pass out complimentary headsets.

Having a book or magazine in your carry-on bag is always a good idea. Whether you encounter a delayed flight, a long layover or a plane with less than stellar in-flight entertainment, a good book will help pass the time.

On everything from red-eye flights to international jaunts, a good eye mask can block out light from overhead, the seatback screens and plane windows. The Nodpod Sleep Mask is especially relaxing since it's weighted.

"Even if you plan to grab a bite at the airport or on the plane (if that's an option), pack some snacks," says Amanda Norcross , content and SEO strategist for travel at U.S. News. "Flying is unpredictable and stressful for many travelers, and 'hanger' only makes things worse." Trail mix, granola bars, crackers, pretzels, dried fruit and popcorn are some good snack options you may want to throw in your carry-on. Also put chewing gum in your carry-on to freshen breath and help with ear popping.

It's not always easy to find a charging station at the airport, and there are restrictions when it comes to packing batteries in your carry-on baggage for any flight. One option that meets Federal Aviation Administration guidelines is the Anker 537 Power Bank (PowerCore 26K for Laptop) . This device can charge a laptop, smartphone or tablet quickly, to keep your devices running even on a long flight.

For international travel – since different countries use different plug shapes – packing a universal adapter or converter will enable you to charge your devices and other electronics. Before purchasing, consider what your needs will be, especially regarding the shape of the wall outlet plugs and the voltage of the countries you'll be visiting.

A travel adapter such as the EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter on Amazon makes plugs from the U.S. fit into electrical outlets around the world, whereas a travel converter like the ALLWEI International Travel Adapter converts the electricity voltage. If you're traveling overseas from the U.S., you'll need both of these devices to use electronics like laptops, curling irons and hair straighteners (unless your device is dual voltage, like the BaBylissPRO Nano Mini Straightening Iron ).

For minor injuries like blisters from new shoes or unexpected cuts and scrapes, pack a first-aid kit with Band-Aids and triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporin in your bag.

Staying hydrated while traveling is a must. Pack a reusable water bottle like the Corkcicle Canteen Triple Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle to fill up at the airport before your flight and refill throughout your travels. Even better – an insulated bottle will stay cold for hours.

Whether it's a long flight or layover (or maybe you just need a good distraction), having some activities like a miniature coloring book and mini colored pencils or small packable games can be really useful.

"I took a small coloring book and a small set of pencils on a flight once and it was life-changing," Méndez says. U.S. News senior digital producer for travel Leilani Osmundson says she and her husband love to bring a deck of cards and portable two-player games to pass the time.

"I typically wear a lightweight jacket on the plane to free up space in my carry-on," says Norcross. "If the plane is too warm, I can easily stuff it under the seat in front of me with my backpack." If you're in need of a simple yet effective packable jacket , check out the Amazon Essentials Puffer Jacket .

Whether your coffee spills off your tray table or you lose your checked baggage, an extra outfit is handy to have. Pack a versatile outfit (including socks and underwear) into your carry-on bag so you have a backup option, or perhaps have your swimwear and flip-flops ready to head directly to the beach the moment you arrive. For tired or swollen feet, having a pair of compression socks and a change of walking shoes can make your travel day much more comfortable.

What not to pack in a carry-on bag

When packing a carry-on bag or suitcase, it's important to note that some items are prohibited on all flights, due to Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The prohibited list includes aerosol products (such as anti-static spray or pepper spray), lithium or lithium-ion batteries, firearms and ammunition, flammables, and explosives. For more details on what you can and can't pack in your carry-on, visit the TSA's What Can I Bring? and the FAA's Pack Safe websites.

Travel Tips 2024

1. Pack smart and start with an empty bag. If you start packing with an empty bag, you are less likely to bring prohibited items to the checkpoint. Not sure what’s prohibited? Visit our “ What Can I Bring?” webpage.

Know the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Remember, if you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, then it is a liquid and must be packed in your checked bag. Pack liquids, gels and aerosols larger than 3.4 ounces in a checked bag to avoid having the carry-on bag pulled aside, opened by a Transportation Security Officer (TSO), and then potentially having to voluntarily abandon the item because it is over 3.4 ounces. If you are traveling with an infant, most items in your diaper bag are exempt from TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. Breast milk, powdered formula, baby food, bottles and sippy cups are all allowed to fly in the passenger cabin of the aircraft. This also goes for liquid and cream medications. Please separate these items from your bag and place them into a different bin for X-ray screening. If your item alarms, additional screening may be required.

2. Arrive early. Travelers are taking to the skies in record numbers, so plan to arrive at least two hours prior to your flight’s scheduled boarding time to allow enough time to park, navigate to the terminal, check luggage with the airline if needed and go through security screening before arriving at your gate. Arrive at least three hours before international flights.

3. Bring an acceptable ID. Before heading to the airport, make sure you have acceptable identification and make it a REAL ID since you must have a REALID -compliant ID to fly by May 7, 2025.  Visit the TSA website to learn which IDs are accepted by TSA at the entrance to the security checkpoint. Identity verification is a critical step of the screening process.

4. Do you carry a firearm? Prepare, pack and declare . If you plan to travel with a firearm, you must properly pack the firearm in a hard-sided, locked case in your checked luggage and declare it with the airline while checking in at the airline ticket counter. Bringing a firearm in your carry-on bag to a TSA checkpoint, even accidentally, is expensive and will cause delays for you and others, even if you have a concealed carry permit or live in a constitutional carry jurisdiction. If you bring a firearm to the security checkpoint on your person or in carry-on bag, TSA will contact law enforcement, who may arrest or cite the passenger, depending on state law. TSA may impose a civil penalty up to almost $15,000 for the first offense, and those who bring a firearm to a security checkpoint will lose TSA PreCheck® eligibility for five years. Second violations will result in permanent disqualification from the program and additional civil penalties. When traveling, be sure to comply with the laws concerning possession of firearms as they vary by local, state and international laws.

5. Be aware of new checkpoint screening technology. TSA uses a variety of methods and technologies to enhance security effectiveness, efficiency and the passenger experience. Screening protocols vary from airport to airport, depending on available technology and the current threat environment. Some airports use the second generation of Credential Authentication Technology ( CAT ), called CAT-2 units. This technology confirms the authenticity of a passenger’s identification credentials with their acceptable photo identification  (ID) along with their flight details and pre-screening status, but with an added camera feature. The facial recognition technology TSA uses helps ensure the person standing at the checkpoint is the same person pictured on their ID. Photos are not stored or saved after a positive ID match has been made, except in a limited testing environment for evaluation of the effectiveness of the technology.

Passenger participation is voluntary. If a passenger chooses not to have their photo taken, they may have their identity checked manually without penalty or losing their place in line. Passengers who do not want their photo taken should alert the TSO, who will verify their ID using the CAT machine only. For more information on how TSA is using facial recognition technology, see TSA’s Privacy Impact Assessments , Fact Sheet and biometrics technology webpages.

Several airports have installed Computed Tomography (CT) units. This technology significantly improves scanning and threat detection capabilities for carry-on bags. CT units give TSOs the ability to review a 3D image of passengers’ bags and reduce the need to physically search the contents of the bag. In airports with these CT units in place, you do not need to remove your 3-1-1 liquids or laptops, but you must place every carry-on item, including bags, into a bin for screening. TSA reminds you that you may only bring at maximum one carry-on bag and one personal item through security screening

6. Travel with ease with TSA PreCheck. Join more than 20 million members benefiting from the TSA PreCheck Trusted Traveler program . TSA PreCheck passengers are low-risk travelers who do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, food, laptops and light jackets at the security checkpoint. Wait time standards for TSA PreCheck lanes are under 10 minutes, whereas standard screening lanes are 30 minutes and under. Visit www.tsa.gov/precheck for more information on enrolling with one of TSA’s three enrollment providers. TSA PreCheck members are reminded to make sure their Known Traveler Number (KTN) is in their airline reservation, so it appears on their boarding pass.

7. Call ahead to request passenger support. If you or a family member require additional assistance through security screening, you may request a TSA Passenger Support Specialist (PSS). A PSS is a TSO who has received specialized training, including how to effectively assist and communicate with individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or those who need general additional screening assistance. Individuals should request passenger assistance at least 72 hours in advance by contacting our TSA Cares passenger support line at (855) 787-2227. TSA Cares live assistance is available weekdays, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, or weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. An automated service is available 24/7.

8. Text or @AskTSA before heading to the airport. You can get real-time assistance by texting questions to 275-872 (“AskTSA”) or through @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger . An automated virtual assistant is available 24/7. You may also reach the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673. Visit our Contact Us page for more information.

9. Listen to and respect frontline employees. Pack an extra dose of patience, especially during these high travel volumes, and show gratitude to all those who are working to get everyone to their destinations safely including TSA and airport personnel, gate agents and flight attendants. Please follow instructions from the TSOs when going through security screening.  Violence and unruly behavior in the transportation systems are not acceptable and result in significant delays at traveler checkpoints. TSOs, along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement, are working together to ensure safe and secure travel. Assaulting a TSA employee is a federal offense and will result in penalties and/or arrest.

10. Remain aware. Be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious activities. Remember: If You See Something, Say Something™.

Behind the Scenes

Why trust people.

People / Alli Waataja

Packing can be a hassle. Luckily, travel companies like Away have gone above and beyond to make luggage that helps offset the burden of travel unknowns and hiccups along the way.

Experts Say

“Travelers should look for durable luggage that makes the travel experience easier,” Delta Air Lines flight attendant Katie Trebendis tells PEOPLE. “Features like weight indicators, spinner wheels, and padded handles can enhance your travel experience.”

Whether you’ve been planning a trip abroad, preparing for a honeymoon, or getting ready for any other adventure that awaits, having reliable luggage will only add to the wonder of your destination. Away has a huge inventory of suitcases, backpacks, duffel bags, and more that can let you explore the world while keeping the things that matter close.

Read on for the best Away luggage of 2024, including some we tested ourselves.

Away The Carry-On

A standard carry-on is a great choice to bring with you on all of your adventures. This durable hard shell carry-on provides stability to keep your belongings safe while fitting perfectly in the overhead bin of all major airlines.

Spinner wheels make this bag easy to tote around — whether in a car trunk on a road trip or pulling it behind you down some cobblestone street abroad. And you get the added benefit of a suitcase’s worth of storage space. As with all Away bags, it’s simple, compact, and sophisticated in design, and comes in a few whimsical colors like forest green.

We tested this bag in our lab and loved its spacious interior, easy navigation, maneuverability, and overall durability — our team pushed it off a counter three times and hit it with a baseball bat, and it didn’t scratch or scuff.

Exterior Size: 21.7 x 13.7 x 9 inches | Interior Size: 20 x 13.5 inches | Capacity: 39.8 liters | Colors: 8 | Material: Polycarbonate | Features: TSA lock, laundry bag, 360-degree spinner wheels

Flight attendant Katie Trebendis says that on Delta, “your carry-on luggage must not exceed 22 by 14 by 9 inches," but you can always check the requirements for your airline at your gate (or online).

Away The Bigger Carry-On

For times when you want a little extra room, but don’t want to check your bag, in steps this larger carry-on.

Fitting about 20 percent more than the standard carry-on, this bag has all the same features with an extra inch on all sides (internally and externally). Our tests confirmed this difference — it fit every item we laid out to pack with room to spare. We also found it exceptionally easy to maneuver.

“Away’s best-selling suitcase, The Bigger Carry-On, is the perfect suitcase for any trip: it’s functional, it's stylish, and it will never let you down,” Cuan Hanly , Away's chief design officer, tells PEOPLE.

With two compartments to help you organize your travel clothes and accessories, this suitcase keeps everything zipped and in place so it doesn’t shift while you’re on the go. There’s even a mesh compression panel to push everything down and a laundry bag. This bag is an ideal size for about a week-long jaunt, and despite its larger size, it doesn't feel heavy.

Exterior Size: 22.7 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches | Interior Size: 21 x 14.5 inches | Capacity: 47.9 liters | Colors: 9 | Material: Polycarbonate | Features: Laundry bag, TSA lock, 360-degree spinner wheels

Away The Carry-On Flex

Should you need just a little more space than a standard carry-on, we recommend The Carry-On Flex. Hanly also likes the bigger version of this model. “Travelers can unzip and expand the exterior seam unlocking an additional 2.25 inches of space for souvenirs, clothes, or whatever else you may need," he says.

Our team tested this bag in our lab and liked how easily it maneuvered around. The compartments were handy for packing a lot of different clothing items, and the compression panels helped condense everything. During our durability tests, the suitcase did sustain some scratches, but those could be buffed out with the included cleaning sponge, and it didn’t suffer any dings or dents.

Exterior Size: 21.7 x 13.7 x 9 inches | Interior Size: 20 x 13.5 inches | Capacity: 46.7 liters | Colors: 5 | Material: Polycarbonate | Features: Laundry bag, TSA lock, 360-degree spinner wheels

Away The Softside Medium

Away's new Softside luggage line perfectly meshes the size and structure of a hardside bag with the flexibility of a soft bag. The exterior is made from padded nylon that feels soft to the touch, almost as though the bag is wearing its own puffer jacket . The "medium" size feels exceedingly spacious, with more than enough room for a week-long getaway (in fact, we think we could fit two weeks' worth of clothing in it with ease).

PEOPLE shopping writer Cai Cramer tested the bag on her recent week-long trip to Costa Rica and praised the bag's large front-opening compartment that provided ample room for two pairs of pants, two sweatshirts, six t-shirts, four bathing suits, and three pairs of shoes. In fact, she says that she had so much room left after packing the essentials that she was able to slide in three extra books and a hair dryer.

While we love how the flexible nylon exterior allows us to fit the suitcase in tighter places and pack more inside, PEOPLE shopping director Laura Gurfein (who also tried this luggage) noticed that the coastal blue color scuffed a little during her first use of the bag. But if you're worried about scuffing, we suggest opting for the black color option.

Exterior Size: 26 x 18.9 x 10.6 inches | Interior Size: 21.3 x 18.1 inches | Capacity: 69 liters | Colors: 4 | Material: Nylon | Features: Laundry bag, TSA lock, 360-degree spinner wheels

People / Laura Gurfein

Away The Medium

When it comes to checked luggage, you’ll want a bag you know is secure and durable, and this bag will keep your belongings safe. With a TSA-approved lock, you'll have an extra layer of security to protect your valuables — not to mention the hard polycarbonate shell that won’t get torn up in transit between the plane and baggage claim. The Medium also compresses your clothes with savvy section dividers.

“Luggage that comes with packing cubes, storage compartments, or anything to compress clothes will allow you to pack more and help you organize your items — so I always recommend looking for these features,” Trebendis says.

There’s no shortage of capacity in The Medium: We couldn’t imagine needing more space for clothes or anything else. This suitcase gives you more space than the carry-on, with easy nesting to conserve storage — it fits snugly inside Away's large checked bag.

Despite being a full-size checked bag, The Medium feels light in weight and can be easily toted around with 360-degree spinner wheels. Based on our tests, we can confirm the bag has extensive organization sections, sleek wheels, and a durable exterior (minus a few scuffs).

Exterior Size: 26 x 18.5 x 11 inches | Interior Size: 24 x 17.5 inches | Capacity: 68.8 liters | Colors: 8 | Material: Polycarbonate | Features: Laundry bag, TSA lock, 360-degree wheels

Away The Medium Flex

With most of the same qualities as The Medium, The Medium Flex just offers a little extra space. It basically has a zippered expander that creates around seven extra liters of capacity (an extra inch all the way around). We loved its huge compartments, divider, lightweight feel, and highly mobile 360-spinner wheels.

The suitcase ran smoothly over most floor types — it only slightly stuck when transferring from hard floors to carpet. Made with the same polycarbonate as the other suitcases, this bag was barely scuffed despite rough handling (being thrown off a counter).

Exterior Size: 26 x 18.5 x 11 inches | Interior Size: 24 x 17.5 inches | Capacity: 75.7 L | Colors: 8 | Material: Polycarbonate | Features: Laundry bag, TSA lock, 360-degree wheels

Away The Large

If you’re going on a longer adventure, this large suitcase has just enough space to keep two (ish!) weeks’ worth of clothes. We found this bag massive and only filled half of it with a huge amount of clothes and cosmetics. With all the same features as its counterparts, this suitcase is durable, well-designed for ease of use, and can be personalized on the luggage or the tag with your initials.

Although it's spacious, this suitcase isn’t heavy (weighing in at just 11 pounds) so it’s not burdensome to drag around on your next trip. Our test showed that it’s actually very mobile despite its size. It’s a suitcase that will give you years of use with minimal signs of wear. It barely scratched despite our team throwing it off a counter three times. Should it scratch in transit, you can simply buff it out with the sponge that’s included with every suitcase.

Editors Say

"I've had the Large Away bag for a little over two years. I'm a chronic over-packer and the bag's spacious capacity lets that side of me flourish. Plus, there's room for souvenirs!" — Madison Yauger , shopping editor

We have tested this bag in real-world travel scenarios and found it to be extremely durable and effective. It moves next to you with ease as you maneuver through airports and it’s easy to buff out any nicks that occur during transport.

Exterior Size: 29 x 20.5 x 12.5 inches | Interior Size: 27 x 19.5 inches | Capacity: 99.2 liters | Colors: 9 | Material: Polycarbonate | Features: Laundry bag, TSA lock, 360-degree wheels

Away The Large Flex

Similar to The Medium Flex, The Large Flex suitcase is a doppelgänger of its original model but with a little more capacity. Our tests found it to be super spacious thanks to the expander, which offered two extra inches of room. Should you be traveling with bulky items like a puffer jacket , there are compression straps to make sure everything fits snugly. Despite its large size, this suitcase is surprisingly lightweight and easy to maneuver. Whether rolling the suitcase upright or at a 45-degree angle, we found it moved effortlessly.

Exterior Size: 29 x 20.5 x 12.5 inches | Interior Size: 27 x 19.5 inches | Capacity: 107.8 liters | Colors: 5 | Material: Polycarbonate | Features: Laundry bag, TSA lock, 360-degree wheels

Away The Everywhere Bag

This reliable bag is made with water-resistant nylon and sleek leather trim, The Everywhere Bag will look good on your arm in any outfit, weather, or locale. It’s the perfect bag for overnights and short trips, with the capacity for several outfits and essentials. It even comes with a laptop pocket and small sections to keep your “everything” organized. With standard straps, an over-the-shoulder strap, and a trolley sleeve to slide over your suitcase handle, you can wear and carry it in several ways.

“With the full wraparound zip opening, there’s no question why this is Away’s best-selling personal item,” Hanly says.

We appreciated the extensive organization of this bag, which would work as a weekender or a duffel bag. It fits enough clothes for four to five days of travel, has a comfortable shoulder strap (though not padded), and it weathered various durability tests without any scratches. With its simple and sophisticated design and useful features, this bag is a must. Exterior Size: 16.3 x 10.2 x 7.3 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: 20 liters | Colors: 5 | Material: Water-resistant nylon, leather trim | Features: Removable strap, interior organization system, laptop pocket

Away The Everywhere Zip Backpack

Backpacks are one of the easiest bags to carry thanks to the double shoulder straps that help offset the weight. This stylish option is sleek on the outside and nuanced within, featuring an array of pockets and small sections for organizing — including a laptop pouch that can fit up to a 15-inch screen. We appreciated how much the inner compartments could fit, and we thought the straps were comfortable despite not being padded. The material also seemed quite durable.

“If you plan to carry on a personal item along with your luggage, I always look for bags with a trolley sleeve to make the walk through the airport easier,” Trebendis says.

It’s lightweight so you can carry it for small adventures like hiking or visiting tourist attractions, or for longer trips. This backpack even has a trolley sleeve so you can slide it over your suitcase handle to transport it if you overpacked slightly (been there, done that!). Plus, the strap on top doubles as a handle or a place to affix your luggage tag. Exterior Size: 12 x 5.9 x 17.7 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: 20 liters | Colors: 4 | Material: Water-resistant nylon, leather, mesh | Features: Internal sections, laptop pocket, hidden pockets, trolley sleeve

Away The Pet Carrier

This carrier has so many thoughtful details, it could only have been designed by someone who has and loves an animal. Seemingly simple at first glance, this bag is actually packed with features to help you and your pet when traveling. Transit can cause anxiety for many pets, so this carrier is equipped with a safety collar clip just in case they try to escape when you open it. There’s removable sherpa bedding to provide comfort and a water-resistant lining to account for accidents. The carrier can also be strapped into a car with a seatbelt for additional safety on road trips. This bag is airplane-compliant and should fit under most airplane seats, so your travel buddy can rest comfortably at your feet.

There’s plenty of ventilation with three mesh panels on different sides of the carrier, as well as a retractable privacy screen. You can easily access your pet through a two-way zipper top opening and two side openings. Plus, there’s plenty of storage for accessories and pet gear, such as a side zipper pocket with sleeves and even a side pocket with drainage holes.

We also tested this pet carrier in a real-world setting. We loved how well it fit under an airplane seat, and that it remained comfortable and spacious for a small dog (a Chihuahua mix) yet left enough legroom for us. Exterior Size: 18.7 x 10.8 x 10.75 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: 18 pounds | Colors: 2 | Material: Nylon, leather | Features: Certified by Center for Pet Safety, includes removable sherpa bedding, water-resistant lining, and more

Away The Insider Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are an organizer’s dream system to keep everything in its place while traveling. This set of four is especially useful because each cube comes in a different size to accommodate a multitude of products and clothes you might be traveling with. The best way to pack these (especially in an Away suitcase) is to put two packing cubes on each side of the luggage.

"Again, as a life-long over-packer, I would be lost without these packing cubes. I can squeeze so many clothes into these cubes, and they fit so compactly in my suitcase. They're a wonder!" —Madison Yauger

We tested these packing cubes in our lab, and they were effective, but we wouldn’t recommend you pack liquid cosmetics in them since the mesh openings will not prevent spills from getting to your clothes. That said, the cubes themselves are made with water-resistant nylon, so if they get wet, they will dry quickly. You can fit a decent amount of clothing in these cubes, so whether you want to store socks and undergarments in one and blouses or shoes in another, there are endless ways to organize your things. Exterior Size: 10 x 4.1 x 8.25 inches, 10 x 4.1 x 4.3 inches, 13 x 4.1 x 10 inches, and 13 x 4.1 x 6.9 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: Not listed | Colors: 7 | Material: Nylon | Features: Set of four in various sizes, mesh panels, water-resistant, can be stored flat

Away The Outdoor Duffle 40L

Away's Outdoor collection "features a variety of versatile outdoor bags and accessories designed for any and all types of travel," says Hanly. And it’s always a good idea to have a duffel in your closet so you can make a quick weekend escape. This duffel will take you far and look good while doing it. Made with 100 percent recycled materials, this bag is sturdy, spacious, and available in three bold colors.

Though it has space for three to four days of clothes, it has several organization sections. And despite being wheel-less, the Outdoor Duffle is super lightweight, so carrying it on a trip shouldn’t be too daunting. We just wished there were even more compartments for organization. That said, we really appreciated its ability to transform from a duffel to a backpack depending on which straps you use to carry it.

“We were excited to create something that was not only incredibly functional but also beautifully designed,” says Hanly. When you consider the sustainable materials and reasonable price (comparatively), this bag is a solid choice for a long weekend. Exterior Size: 12.2 x 21.7 x 9.8 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: 40 liters | Colors: 3 | Material: Recycled polyester, recycled materials for zippers, mesh, and webbing | Features: Internal pockets and sections, detachable strap

Away The Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L

If you're looking for a great travel backpack , this is a packer’s dream bag. It’s surprisingly spacious and had room left over even after we packed a huge pile of clothes. It has multiple compartments so you can keep everything organized and comes with compression straps so everything can be condensed for maximum capacity. Even when the bag was full, we felt comfortable walking around with it for a while without shoulder or back pain.

We were a little thrown by the side zipper because a few items fell out when the bag was opened. It did hold up to a 15-inch laptop and protected it extremely well. We shoved the bag off a counter three times and the laptop didn’t have any dings or damage. If you’re short in stature, the back might seem a little long, but it’s cushioned across your shoulders and comfortable to wear. Between the high quality and the seemingly endless capacity — this bag was dubbed the “Mary Poppins bag” during our test — the Outdoor Convertible Backpack is the perfect companion for any adventurer.

Exterior Size: 21.7 x 13.6 x 9.5 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: 45 liters | Colors: 3 | Material: Water-resistant nylon, leather, mesh | Features: Internal sections, 15-inch laptop pocket, removable shoulder strap, hidden pockets

Away The Packable Carryall

While most Away bags lean toward neutral colors, the Packable Carryall makes a statement with whimsical options including bright orange, teal, and royal blue, as well as muted options such as black and navy. The entire bag is made from 100 percent recycled nylon, so it’s lightweight, water-resistant, and quite durable.

“With a large chamber, this bag can hold a weekend’s worth of clothes and shoes and has pockets for accessories like sunglasses, jewelry pouches, or small wallets,” Hanly says.

This an ideal carryall for a fun weekend away — and when you’re unpacked, it folds up and can be stored in a small zippered pouch to conserve space. Exterior Size: 15 x 19.7 x 9 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: 43 liters | Colors: 5 | Material: Water-resistant recycled nylon | Features: Can be folded in on itself for storage, internal organization, trolley sleeve

Away The Small Toiletry Bag

Away also offers small organizers and accessory bags that fit perfectly in its larger travel bags — such as this toiletry bag . Available in four colors for different aesthetics, this bag is actually designed to mimic the look and system of the Away suitcases with two side sections (one plastic, one zippered mesh) that you can organize and close up to keep everything in place.

This bag is super durable and easily washable. It even comes with a cute handle on top to replicate the design of a suitcase, but mini! And there’s an exterior pocket so you can store anything flat that you might need to grab in a hurry (makeup wipes! menstrual products! medications!).

Between the clear and mesh storage, there are various types of pockets to store and transport different types of cosmetics. The material is also waterproof which is an added benefit, especially since it will be spending a lot of time in the bathroom. Exterior Size: 8.3 x 3.15 x 5.5 inches | Interior Size: Not listed | Capacity: 2.3 liters | Colors: 4 | Material: Water-resistant nylon | Features: Mesh interior pocket

What to Know About Away Travel Luggage

Size counts.

The size of your bag will no doubt impact your travel experience — too big and it’s bulky to carry around; too small and it might not fit everything you want to carry. And since you can’t be Goldilocks and try each one out, we’re here to help. For a week-long trip, experts might say you just need a carry-on, but that will entirely depend on what kind of packer you are.

For those of us who tend to pack a little extra, you might want a checked luggage piece . However, if you pack efficiently (re-wearing or mixing and matching different tops and bottoms), then a carry-on suitcase should provide plenty of space. For a 10-day trip, we would recommend The Bigger Carry-On for those who travel light, and The Medium suitcase for those who like to bring lots of clothing options.

Features Are Aplenty

Hanly says Away luggage is “thoughtfully designed to address real travelers’ concerns, from the removable laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate to the compression pad to maximize how much fits inside.” These bags have many features to make your travels easier.

If organization keeps you calm while on the go, check out The Everywhere Zip Backpack , which has numerous pockets and compartments for storing your passport, cosmetics, a water bottle, and more. And if you hate carrying a heavy bag, The Carry-On comes with two sets of spinner wheels for easy maneuvering. You might also consider luggage with a TSA-approved lock for added security to keep your belongings safe — every Away Travel suitcase comes with one of these (and it’s super easy to lock and unlock). Lastly, if you need a dog or cat carrier , The Pet Carrier comes in clutch.

Materials Affect Longevity

Away bags are designed to be quite durable for any journey you plan to take. The hard-shell suitcases are made with a strong polycarbonate (plastic) that will hold up to the wear and tear of transit. These suitcases are backed by a lifetime limited warranty, so if there are any issues with the shell cracking or breaking, or problems with the hardware, you can get the bag replaced at no cost. The softer bags, like backpacks and duffels, are made with water-resistant nylon and mesh sections. The smaller bags have a one-year limited warranty, and you have 100 days to make returns for all Away products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, during several of our lab durability tests, Away luggage sustained minor scratches, but each suitcase comes with a cleaning sponge to buff out any marks. We have personally used it with our Away checked bag ( The Large ) and it works beautifully. You can also clean the inside with a damp cloth and mild soap for small stains.

Hard-shell suitcases protect fragile items better, help you stick to packing for the exact dimensions of your bag (as opposed to expanding it to fit what you stuffed in). Away's are designed to fit in an overhead bin (in the carry-on sizes at least). Trebendis recommends hard-shell luggage because these pieces “retain their shape and help compress clothes, meaning you can fit more items without worrying about bulging luggage not fitting in the overhead bins.”

One cool function of Away luggage is you can choose to add an ejectable battery to your carry-on suitcases. At this time, lithium batteries aren’t allowed in checked bags because they can cause a fire hazard. If you choose the battery option, you’ll receive a small USB cord to charge it in the same delivery as your luggage. It takes up to eight hours to fully charge, so keep that in mind when packing before a trip. Once in use, you can charge your cell phone and any other electronic device that uses a USB cord up to four times before the battery itself will need to be recharged.

“When Away was founded in 2015, there was a huge gap in the luggage market,” says Hanly. “Not only was there no travel brand that addressed both the utility and style needs of a modern-day traveler, but also there was a lack of brand loyalty across the category.” He says before Away, travelers had to choose between “price and quality,” and to have quality luggage it would cost more “than the trip you were taking it on.” Hanly adds that Away’s combination of “unmatched style, form, and function” has set the brand apart and “resonated with consumers from the very beginning.”

To write a comprehensive guide to the best Away bags, we consulted multiple in-depth tests, which we performed in our lab while using the luggage in the real world. We took the bags on flights across the country and around the world, on trips that lasted one day and multiple weeks. Some of the qualities we tested for include:

  • Durability: To test how well the suitcases would hold up against all the bumps, falls, and rough handling that comes with traveling, we took things to the extreme by slamming the suitcases with baseball bats and pushing them off ladders, taking note of any scratches, scuffs, dents, or marks.
  • Space: We created packing lists for weekend, week-long, and multiple-week trips, then attempted to fit all of the items into our Away bags. We took note of any expansion zippers or handy organizational features. To ensure that the carry-on bags fit in standard overhead bins, we built model overhead bins with the same dimensions as the real thing and attempted to lift the suitcases up and into the bins.
  • Special Features: For every bag we tested, we carefully noted any special features that made it stand out from other bags in its category, like USB charging ports, extra pockets, 360-degree wheels, TSA-approved locks, or padded handles.

Madison Yauger is a shopping editor for PEOPLE who loves to travel. Despite her tendency to overpack, she fit a week's worth of clothes in her Away carry-on for recent trips to Iceland and Greece, and when that doesn't cut it, she defers to her Away large bag for checked luggage. For this story, she spoke to Cuan Hanly, chief design officer at Away, and Delta Air Lines flight attendant Katie Trebendis, pored over insights from several of our lab tests and editors' personal experiences, and thoroughly researched the brand and each product. This story was recently updated with insights on the new Softside luggage line, which was tested by multiple PEOPLE staff members.

The construction is solid, and the straps fit great on one or both shoulders with no slipping."

"I love my Everywhere bag," an Away reviewer says. Interior compression straps help you pack the maximum amount of gear, while interior and exterior pockets, including a compartment for a 15-inch laptop, help you stay organized.

The backpack retails for $220.

What we like about the Away F.A.R. convertible backpack:  The backpack is made from recycled materials and is weather- and abrasion-resistant for durability during travel and outdoor adventures.

How much does Away luggage cost?

Away luggage offers high quality at a reasonable price point, competitively priced compared with other DTC luggage brands.

Currently, the smaller Monos carry-on retails for around $255 , while the similarly sized Away carry-on sells for $275 . However, the Away does offer one thing that Monos, and most other competing brands, don't: Away carry-on suitcases are equipped with a removable battery for charging gadgets.

Does Away luggage allow for returns?

Away offers free UPS ground shipping on all orders (suitcases and accessories) and returns within the contiguous United States. The company also offers rush shipping for an additional fee. According to our shopper, the luggage ships out fast. "Shipped on the 13th, arrived on the 14th," she noted.

While ultra-fast shipping might be a great perk for most people, it complicates canceling your order or changing your shipping address. "Once you hit the buy button, there really is no going back," said our shopper, who struggled to get in touch with customer service to intercept the suitcase. "There is zero wiggle room. No chat option, no easy way to change an address if you accidentally get it wrong. And because items ship so fast, there's a good chance that if you get the address wrong you won't be able to change it in time." So do that double-check before you hit the buy button!

"Our team moves quickly to get your order shipped out ASAP, which means that we aren't able to cancel or make any changes to an order once it's been placed," explains Away in the Q & A section of the website. "If you're traveling soon, we recommend that you place a new order for the color or size you would prefer, and we can assist with a return of the original order."

Away offers a 100-day trial period for all luggage. If you aren't happy with your purchase, returns are accepted for items within the warranty period except personalized items. All you need to do is fill out a return request to start the process. You will be refunded the full amount of your order, minus any shipping charges. Brits traveling to Europe given urgent four-day warning over new rules

Brits traveling to Europe given urgent four-day warning over new rules

The new rules are set to impact everyone travelling by plane after 1 september.

Lucy Devine

Lucy Devine

Brits travelling to Europe have been issued a four-day warning ahead of a new rule change coming imminently.

The EU is introducing some new rules related to passengers' carry-on luggage, including what kind of bags we can take on board an aircraft.

If you regularly fly , you'll know that different airlines often have their own rules about what luggage you can carry onto the plane.

This can often be confusing, with many passengers getting caught out at the gates with the wrong sized suitcases.

Of course, this only ends up leading to delays - and often, extra charges.

But this is all about to change, as the EU moves to standardising carry-on luggage.

From 1 September, EU holidaymakers will be allowed to carry one cabin bag and one small personal item - such as a handbag or a laptop bag - on board.

These items must weigh no more than 10kg and the small personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, writes The Express.

Moreover, the maximum dimension of the carry-on cabin cab, including handles and wheels, will be 55 x 40 x 20cm.

The dimension limit on your small personal item should be 40 x 30 x 15cm.

But luggage isn’t the only thing the EU is standardising on 1 September, as previous legislation regarding liquid limits is set to be reintroduced.

Previously, travellers heading through terminals equipped with Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) had been permitted to carry liquids in quantities exceeding 100ml.

However, the EU has decided to reinforce the 100ml rule across all airports from Sunday (1 September).

Those who have flown out of the UK since June will already be aware that the 100ml liquid limit was recently reintroduced.

The rule was brought back into play after reports of long queues forming in UK airports such as those in Birmingham and Newcastle.

The new rules are set to standardise hand luggage (Getty Stock Photo)

Passengers will now be able to take one litre worth of liquid through security in their hand luggage.

This can be split across containers holding no more than 100ml of liquid, gel or cream.

All liquids must be placed inside of a clear, resealable pouch that roughly measures 20cm x 20cm and should be scanned separately from your case.

The EU claims both luggage and liquid standardisation are ‘necessary’ but that rules could change in the not-so-distant future.

So, if you are going on holiday from 1 September, make sure you’re aware of the new legislation. You don’t want to be caught off guard!

Traveling with Perfume: Essential Tips for Carry-On, Checked Luggage, and TSA Regulations

You can travel with perfume, but follow the liquid regulations. Your perfume must be in a container of 100ml or less. Place it in a clear, sealable plastic bag with other liquids for screening. These travel guidelines help ensure smooth security checks at the airport.

When traveling with checked luggage, you can carry larger bottles of perfume. However, it is wise to wrap them securely to prevent leakage. Consider using bubble wrap or placing the bottles in a sturdy toiletry bag. Label the perfume in case the luggage is lost.

Familiarize yourself with international regulations, as some countries have restrictions on bringing in certain scents. Additionally, be mindful of temperature changes during your journey; extreme heat can affect the fragrance’s quality.

Understanding these tips for traveling with perfume ensures a hassle-free experience. With these guidelines in mind, you can confidently select your favorite fragrances for your trip. Next, we will explore how to choose the best travel-sized perfumes and specific brands that cater to travel needs.

Can You Bring Perfume on an Airplane?

Yes, you can bring perfume on an airplane. However, there are specific regulations regarding the quantity and packaging.

Travelers must adhere to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) liquid rules when bringing perfume. You can carry liquids, including perfume, in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or smaller. These containers must fit into a single quart-sized clear plastic bag. If you have larger bottles, you may pack them in checked luggage. This regulation exists to ensure safety and security onboard aircraft and to facilitate the screening process at security checkpoints.

Are There Specific TSA Regulations for Carrying Perfume?

Yes, there are specific regulations from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for carrying perfume on flights. Passengers can generally bring perfume in their carry-on bags, but the liquids must adhere to the TSA’s liquid rule of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less. Additionally, all liquid items must fit in a single quart-sized bag.

When comparing the regulations for carrying perfume in carry-on luggage versus checked baggage, several important factors arise. In carry-on bags, the 3.4-ounce limit and quart-sized restriction apply to all liquids, including perfume. In contrast, there are no specific volume restrictions for checked baggage; however, passengers need to ensure the perfume is packed securely to prevent leakage. It is also advisable to check airline policies for any additional restrictions.

Carrying perfume in your carry-on bag can enhance your travel experience by allowing you to fresher during your flight and upon arrival at your destination. According to the TSA, ensuring that your bottle meets size regulations helps avoid delays at security checkpoints. This compliance makes the travel process smoother and more enjoyable.

However, carrying perfume also has drawbacks. The size limitation can be a problem for individuals who prefer larger bottles or specialty scents that do not fit within the 3.4-ounce restriction. Additionally, some fragrances may be sensitive to temperature changes, which can affect their quality if subjected to hot or cold conditions in checked luggage. Perfume expert Dr. Anna K. Leduc (2021) notes that extreme temperatures can alter fragrance notes.

To navigate TSA regulations effectively, travelers should consider purchasing travel-sized perfume bottles or decanting their favorite scent into smaller containers. Always check the TSA website for the latest updates and specific airline policies regarding perfume. For frequent travelers, keeping a designated travel cosmetic bag can help streamline packing and ensure compliance with TSA regulations.

What Size Bottles of Perfume Are Allowed in Carry-On Baggage?

Travelers are allowed to carry bottles of perfume that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or smaller in their carry-on baggage.

  • Size Limit: 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
  • Container Requirements: Must fit in a quart-sized bag.
  • Quantity: Limited to one quart-sized bag per passenger.
  • Airline Regulations: Different airlines may have specific rules.
  • International Variations: Some countries have additional restrictions.

Understanding specific regulations will help ensure a smooth travel experience.

Size Limit : Travelers must adhere to a size limit of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) for liquids in carry-on luggage. This guideline is part of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations in the United States and is widely accepted by airlines globally. Exceeding this limit can result in confiscation of the item.

Container Requirements : All liquid items, including perfume, must be placed within a single quart-sized, clear plastic zip-top bag. This requirement aims to facilitate security screening. Passengers must remove this bag from their carry-on when going through security.

Quantity : Each passenger is limited to one quart-sized bag of liquids. This includes all liquids, gels, and aerosols, meaning that you may need to prioritize which items to include if you wish to carry multiple products.

Airline Regulations : While the TSA has established guidelines, some airlines may have their rules. It is essential to check with your airline prior to travel, as certain carriers might enforce stricter regulations.

International Variations : Regulations can vary significantly by country. Some international airports may have different allowances for liquid carry-ons or might prohibit certain items entirely. Familiarizing oneself with the destination’s airport security guidelines beforehand can prevent inconvenience.

Adhering to these guidelines can ease your travel experience and ensure your favorite fragrances accompany you on your journey.

What Are the Risks of Packing Perfume in Checked Luggage?

Packing perfume in checked luggage poses several risks that travelers should be aware of.

  • Chemical reactions
  • Temperature fluctuations
  • Security concerns

When packing perfume, it is important to consider these risks and the potential consequences of each.

Leakage: Perfume containers can leak during transit. The pressure changes in the airplane cabin may cause liquid to escape. This can lead to damage inside the luggage and ruin other items.

Breakage: Glass bottles are fragile. If packed without proper cushioning, they may break during handling or movement. This not only causes loss of the perfume but can also create a mess.

Chemical reactions: Some perfumes contain volatile ingredients. When exposed to heat or pressure, these ingredients may interact negatively, altering the scent or causing the bottle to crack.

Temperature fluctuations: Checked luggage may be exposed to extreme temperature variations. High heat can affect the perfume’s composition, diminishing its quality or changing its scent.

Security concerns: Security personnel may inspect checked luggage. If they discover perfume, they may question the container or its contents, causing delays or confiscation.

Understanding these risks can help travelers make informed decisions when packing perfume for flights.

How Can You Safely Pack Perfume for Air Travel?

To safely pack perfume for air travel, it is important to adhere to regulations, use proper containers, and protect the bottles from damage.

First, familiarize yourself with airline regulations. Most airlines follow the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules, which state that any liquid carried in a carry-on bag must be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or smaller. You must place these containers in a single, quart-sized, clear resealable bag. According to TSA guidelines, this helps security personnel easily inspect items.

Second, choose appropriate containers. If the perfume is in a larger bottle, transfer some into a smaller, compliant atomizer or travel-sized bottle. Ensure that the smaller containers are made of sturdy materials, such as plastic or glass, designed for liquids. This reduces the risk of leaks or spills.

Third, protect the bottles. Wrap each perfume bottle in clothing or bubble wrap to prevent breakage. Place wrapped bottles in the center of your bag, surrounded by soft items like clothes or towels. This additional cushioning helps to absorb shock during travel.

Finally, declare your perfume if traveling internationally. Certain countries have restrictions on the volume of liquids allowed. Be aware of these laws to avoid issues at customs. Checking the specific regulations of your destination can prevent confiscation or fines.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy your perfume throughout your travels without complications.

What Best Practices Should You Follow When Traveling with Perfume?

When traveling with perfume, it is essential to follow best practices to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

  • Check TSA regulations for carry-on items.
  • Use travel-sized containers for liquids.
  • Pack perfumes in checked luggage to avoid spillage.
  • Store fragrances upright and cushion them to prevent breakage.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Consider packaging fragility when selecting options.

Following these best practices can help you maintain the integrity of your perfume while traveling. Here are detailed explanations for each recommendation.

Check TSA regulations for carry-on items : Checking TSA regulations when traveling with perfume is crucial for compliance. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits passengers to carry liquids, including perfume, in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less. All containers must fit into a single quart-sized bag. Failing to follow these guidelines can result in confiscation at security checkpoints.

Use travel-sized containers for liquids : Using travel-sized containers for liquids minimizes the risk of leakage and spills. Many brands offer perfumes in smaller bottles designed explicitly for travel. This allows you to easily carry your favorite scent without risking overloading your bag or running afoul of regulations. Opt for sample sizes or refillable perfume atomizers, which are convenient and can help preserve more expensive scents during travel.

Pack perfumes in checked luggage to avoid spillage : Packing perfumes in checked luggage allows for larger bottles that exceed carry-on liquid limits. However, it is important to cushion them properly with clothing or bubble wrap to prevent breakage. According to a study conducted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), using protective materials significantly reduces the chances of damage during transit.

Store fragrances upright and cushion them to prevent breakage : Storing fragrances upright is fundamental to prevent leakage. Perfume bottles are often designed to retain liquid when stored upright. Additionally, cushioning them with soft items like clothing can create a protective barrier against shocks while traveling. Many travelers recommend placing it in the center of the suitcase for added protection.

Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight : Perfumes are sensitive to temperature and light. Storing them in extreme temperatures can alter their scent. It is best to keep them in a climate-controlled space and away from direct sunlight. Continuous exposure can degrade essential oils and diminish fragrance quality.

Consider packaging fragility when selecting options : While selecting perfume to bring on a trip, consider the fragility of the packaging. Glass bottles are common but can easily break. If you anticipate rough handling, consider choosing perfumes in plastic or refillable containers. This practice can help avoid loss or damage to your favorite fragrances during your travels.

How Can You Prevent Perfume Spills During Your Travels?

To prevent perfume spills during your travels, secure the bottle, choose the right luggage, and follow specific packing techniques.

First, secure the perfume bottle. Ensure the bottle cap is tightly closed. Use tape or a rubber band to hold the cap in place. This adds an extra layer of security against accidental openings. Choose bottles made of sturdy materials like glass or heavy plastic. They can withstand pressure changes during flights.

Next, select the right luggage. Use hard-shell luggage when possible. Hard cases provide better protection against impacts. Consider using a padded pouch or a small cosmetic case specifically designed for liquids. This adds cushioning to absorb shocks and minimize movement.

Then, follow effective packing techniques. Place the perfume bottle inside a resealable plastic bag. This contains any spills that may occur. Position the bag in the center of your suitcase. This prevents the bottle from coming into contact with the walls of the suitcase, reducing the chance of breakage. Avoid packing the perfume in checked luggage if possible. Instead, carry it in your carry-on bag. This ensures you have it with you and allows for better management of any potential leaks.

These precautions will help minimize the risk of perfume spills during your travels and ensure a pleasant experience.

What Should You Do If Your Perfume Bottle Breaks During Travel?

If your perfume bottle breaks during travel, handle the situation quickly to minimize the mess and potential loss.

  • Assess the damage.
  • Contain the spill.
  • Clean the area.
  • Notify the hotel or airline.
  • Consider filing an insurance claim.

Transitioning from assessment to action can lead to a better resolution.

Assess the damage : Assessing the damage helps you understand the extent of the breakage. Check if the bottle is completely shattered or if it can be salvaged. This understanding aids in determining your next steps effectively.

Contain the spill : Containing the spill is crucial. Use tissues, paper towels, or any feasible absorbent material to catch the leaking liquid. This prevents further spread and reduces the likelihood of other items in your luggage being affected.

Clean the area : Cleaning the area is important to restore order. Use appropriate cleaning supplies to remove any spilled perfume from surfaces. This ensures your surroundings remain hygienic and odor-free.

Notify the hotel or airline : Notifying your hotel or airline about the incident can be beneficial. They may offer assistance, such as providing cleaning supplies or advice on handling your belongings if needed.

Consider filing an insurance claim : Considering filing an insurance claim can help recoup losses. If you have travel insurance that covers personal belongings, this could help you replace the perfume or receive compensation.

In conclusion, timely assessment and effective action can alleviate the challenges posed by a broken perfume bottle during travel.

Are There Any Recommendations for Choosing Travel-Friendly Perfumes?

Yes, there are recommendations for choosing travel-friendly perfumes. When selecting a perfume for travel, consider factors such as size, packaging, fragrance type, and personal preferences to ensure convenience and compliance with regulations.

When comparing travel-friendly perfumes, you will often find two main types: bottled perfumes and solid perfumes. Bottled perfumes are liquid and usually come in various sizes. They may exceed the liquid restrictions imposed by airlines if they are larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Solid perfumes, on the other hand, come in stick or balm form and are compact, making them easier to carry and often exempt from liquid restrictions. Additionally, solid perfumes tend to have a more subtle scent profile, which may suit some travel settings better.

Travel-friendly perfumes offer several advantages. They are often designed with portability in mind. Many brands produce roll-on versions or travel sprays, making them easy to apply on the go. According to a study by the Fragrance Foundation (2021), 65% of fragrance consumers seek convenience in their purchase decisions, indicating a strong market preference for travel-friendly options. Moreover, these perfumes minimize the risk of spills or breakages during transit, adding to their practicality.

On the downside, some travel-friendly perfumes may sacrifice scent intensity and longevity. Solid perfumes typically have a lighter fragrance experience than liquid ones, which can impact how long the scent lasts throughout the day. A report by Perfumer & Flavorist (2022) suggests that consumers often prefer fine fragrances that last longer, which could make high-quality liquid perfumes more desirable. Additionally, solid perfumes may not always offer the same scent variations or complexity as their liquid counterparts.

Based on this information, consider your travel habits and preferences when choosing a perfume. For frequent travelers, opt for solid or roll-on perfumes for convenience and portability. If fragrance longevity is your priority, select travel-sized liquid perfumes under the allowed limit. Always check airline regulations regarding liquids and opt for refillable containers to reduce waste. Tailoring your choice to your travel style will enhance your experience while on the move.
