W elcome to Valencian Cellar Tours !

My t rips offer the visitor to Valencia an opportunity to visit vineyards & wineries, explore historic towns with a heritage of wine making & taste quality traditional cuisine! Get out of the city and pass through a varied landscape from majestic mountains, deep gorges to vine carpeted hills. Many of the locations & sights we visit are off the tourist route. It´s the hidden, timeless Valencia most travellers never see, stepping back in history with 10th Century Moorish plazas, Gothic 14thC churches from the Conquest.... an old world tranquilty you thought had disappeared.

We cater for English/Spanish speakers with mainly small, private groups,  more a luxury experience  with your personal guide who is passionate, has wine education and takes care of you on the tour!   Also, having a unique relationship with owners/winemakers makes it a special visit at the winery & see behind the scenes.  We explain more than the basics...a mini wine course,  making you feel at home in the bodega & enjoy their best wines!  It is not a budget scripted tour .

Tours are guided by myself  Toni  & vineyard owners .. each an unrepeatable event!

Visits are unhurried, discovering vineyards, learning more about Spanish wine making & tasting great wines of the region.  "Some clients say they learnt more on my tours in 20 mins. than all the big venues they visited and that´s a compliment  that I am giving you a valuable insight " Toni Martin.

About Valenica Wine Consulting & Tours

A dutch sommelier shows you the wonders of valencian wines.

Valencia Wine Consulting & Tours was founded by sommelier Johan de Smedt, who is originally from the Netherlands. He’s a social anthropologist with many years of experience in humanitarian work in Africa, with organisations like Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) and Oxfam.

Johan has been living in Valencia since 2008, and did his sommelier training in Valencia; he is specialised in Valencian wines, and has visited most of the Valencian wineries, to taste their wines. Valencia used to be a bulk wine producer, but nowadays the region produces top wines, often made with local grapes that you don’t find anywhere else. Valencia produces mostly red wines, but also outstanding white wines and Cava – and these could also be organic, biodynamic or natural wines.

After the sommelier training Johan ventured into tourism, doing wine tours and tastings for local agencies, but in 2016 he decided to set up his own agency, and do everything himself. The rest is history, as they say…

Utiel-Requena is a remarkable wine region situated in the Valencian Community (Spain).

Utiel and Requena, the heart of the region, are small historical towns surrounded by vineyards. Laying over 700 meters above the sea and 70 km away from the Mediterranean coast it has excellent conditions for wine making.

Archeological findings prove that wine production started here back to the 7th century BC. Which makes the region the oldest DO (Denominación de Origen) in Spain.

The region is the birthplace for the legendary Bobal grape variety, while the winemakers achieve great results with other varieties as well.

Valencia wine tour: Great wineries and restaurants to visit

  • Spain supplement 2021

The historic port of Valencia, the third largest city in Spain, was founded by the Romans but reached its heyday during the 16th century when it was the hub of the silk industry.

It still has a well-preserved old centre, which includes its most famous landmark, the massive and modernist Mercado Central (central market), completed in 1928 in the Valencian Art Nouveau style with Gothic overtones.

At the other end of the architectural spectrum are the iconic white-arched buildings that house the City of Arts and Science, designed by native son Santiago Calatrava and comprising five structures over 2km of the former bed of the river Turia.

Valencia is also a city that knows how to party, with local festivities during the year ranging from the religious to the profane. If you visit in spring, be prepared for the noise and fireworks of the famous Las Fallas festival.

Valencia wine: the facts

Planted area : 13,000ha

Main grapes : White Moscatel, Merseguera, Malvasia, Macabeo, Arcos Red Monastrell, Bobal, Tempranillo,Garnacha, Manto

Denominations : DO Utiel-Requena, Valencia; Vino de Pago Chozas Carrascal, El Terrerazo, Los Balagueses, Vera de Estenas

Annual production : 700,000 hectolitres (one hectolitre = 100 litres)

Main soil types : Sand, clay, limestone

Valencia has a history of winemaking dating back more than 2,000 years. Until about 25 years ago it was predominantly a source of cheap bulk wines, but more recently it has begun making a name for itself in the international world of fine wines.

As is happening elsewhere throughout Spain, small independent winemakers have started to focus on the indigenous grapes of their native soils.

In Valencia province, which has two DOs (Valencia and Utiel-Requena) and four Vino de Pago ‘cru’ estates (all within Utiel-Requena territory), old vines have been recovered and native grape varieties are being grafted onto existing international vines, with some spectacular results.

Some big producers are also taking a turn at creating ‘micro bodegas’ within their larger operations. The trend of ‘returning to roots’ has created a new opportunity for Valencia’s winemakers to become trendsetters themselves. In the words of Catalan architect and designer Antoni Gaudí: ‘Originality consists of returning to the origin.’

Bodegas Murviedro

Bodegas Murviedro was founded in 1927 as the Spanish subsidiary of the Swiss wine company Schenk Group, with vineyards and wineries in Switzerland, France, Italy and, of course, Spain.

Murviedro has become one of the big players in this southeastern region’s increasingly quality-focused winemaking fraternity.

Since 2014 it has been under the guidance of oenologist Juanjo Muñoz. Following the recent trend of reviving indigenous grapes with smaller production, Muñoz says he still gives the same personal attention to all its collections, large and small, all of which come from its own vineyards.

In keeping with Murviedro’s forward-moving attitude, the producer has embraced oenotourism with a passion.

Winery visits to La Casa de la Seda (Bodega Histórica) in the centre of Requena are available upon request.

Bodega Mustiguillo

Winemaker Toni Sarrión’s dream when he took control at family-run Bodega Mustiguillo in the late 1990s was to highlight the inherent personalities of the indigenous Bobal and Merseguera grapes of the region, previously only considered as a source of bulk wines.

His passion led to the creation of his own denomination, Vino de Pago (DOP) El Terrerazo – an uphill journey that has paid off both personally and professionally with award-winning Quincha Corral, his fullest expression of the potential of the Bobal grape.

The first single-estate Pago winery in Valencia (approved in September 2010), Mustiguillo practises low-intervention viticulture, respecting the characteristics of both the soil and the grapes.

Winery visits are available by appointment.

Baldovar 923

In La Serranía de Valencia, at the northern tip of the Valencia DO, Baldovar 923  has been recovering the native high-mountain varieties, especially Merseguera and Mencía, since 2016.

Founding partner Juan (Nito) Alegre Soler, along with winemakers Andrés Vergara and Francisco Bosco – and Manolo Camarena in the fields – have converted their 12ha (24 plots) of vineyards from old vines to organic viticulture, respecting nature and its cycles.

From humble beginnings, Baldovar 923 (named for the tiny hamlet of Baldovar, 923m above sea level) now produces five wines that have been catching the attention of international wine gurus and geeks.

Visits are available at weekends, morning and evening, by appointment.

Fil.loxera y Cía

South of Valencia city in Fontanars dels Alforins – or, more precisely, inside the home of Pilar Esteve and José Ramón Domenech – you can find the small but mighty Fil.loxera y Cía , founded in 2011 along with their friend Joan Llobell.

It’s the very definition of a micro-winery, now recognised for having revived native grapes including Arco (the local name for Valencia’s Arcos grape), Ull de Perdiu and Valencí.

Esteve makes it clear they weren’t looking to recover these forgotten grapes in order to be trendy. ‘Somehow the grapes found us,’ she explains, while recounting delightful personal stories of their first encounters. Their complex wines, creatively named with clever label artwork to match, are now beginning to appear outside Spain, including in the UK.

Private winery visits are available by appointment – contact Esteve by DM on Instagram.

Celler del Roure

Nearby towards Moixent is Celler del Roure , which started life in a garage and is now recognised as one of the most innovative wineries in Valencia. The paradox of this is not lost on winemaker Pablo Calatayud who, with his father Paco, began with the international grapes that were in fashion when they bought their first property in 1996.

Inspired by the acquisition of 100 or so 2,800-litre amphorae buried in the cellars of another estate, which they purchased 10 years later, Pablo began to study the traditional winemaking methods of the region with the help of neighbours who shared their knowledge, and vines, with him.

With 40ha in the DO Valencia sub-zone Terres dels Alforins, Celler del Roure produces three collections including the amphora-aged Vins Antics. But it was returning to the origins that earned Pablo the reputation as a vanguard winemaker. Weekend visits are by appointment.

Valencia for wine lovers: My perfect day

Little beats starting the day with an early-morning Spanish market visit. There is probably none more spectacular than this Valencian landmark, so today skip the hotel breakfast and head over to Mercado Central, not far from the cathedral. After a quick bocata and coffee at Central Bar , spend an hour or so taking in the sights, smells and sounds of one of Europe’s largest fresh food markets.

Lunch & afternoon

By now it’s time to think about lunch, and if one market visit wasn’t enough, then you’re in luck. Top chef and restaurateur Ricard Camarena’s Habitual  is just a 15-minute walk away at Mercado de Colón – another of Valencia’s emblematic structures. With two Michelin stars at his eponymous restaurant across town, Camarena’s culinary focus is on super-fresh, locally sourced fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, all prepared to his demanding – and delicious – standards.

After lunch, head back to the hotel to pick up your overnight bag and the car, and in less than an hour (via autovía A-3 due west) you’ll find yourself in the charming medieval village of Requena.

Turn onto the N-330 towards Utiel and a further 20km will take you to Bodega Mustiguillo where you can enjoy a two-hour bodega visit while tasting award-winning wines by Toni Sarrión.

Once back in Requena, check in at Los Canilleros . Lovingly restored by Marta Cervera Sarrión and her winemaker husband, this family-run B&B in the centre of the village boasts six beautifully decorated rooms, as well as its own underground bodega dating back to 1858.

Dinner at El Yantar FoodXperience , located in the caves below the Castillo de Requena ruins, is truly a unique local experience, featuring three seasonal tasting menus paired with small-production wines from the Utiel-Requena area, all carefully chosen by owner-chef Carlos Cervera. A short walk back to the welcoming comfort of Los Canilleros is the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Wine Tasting In Valencia: 12 Places You Have To Try

Wine tasting in Valencia

Valencia, a port city on Spain's Costa Blanca, is renowned for its cultural activities and for its close proximity to lively seaside resorts like Benidorm. While drinking might be all about lager and imported ales in Benidorm, it's not in Valencia. Valencia is surrounded by several important wine growing regions and the grapes from those vineyards go into producing incredible Valencian wines.

Utiel-Requena , Alicante , Castellon and Valencia all have their own Denomination of Origin which is protected and controlled by a regulating council. When you go to wine tastings in Valencia, you'll be sipping on the delicious wines made from the grapes nurtured by oenologists from those areas.

If you're a prosecco fan and are hoping to see how Spanish cava compares with your favorite Italian tipple, there's only one small village with a denomination of origin for the fizzy stuff and that's Requena. At some wine tastings you might get offered a type of bubbly brew called espumoso, but if you've got even a half-decent palate, you'll probably agree it should be left in the bottle.

Whichever way you choose to do your wine tastings, you'll have a better experience if you're not lumbered with bags. You can free yourself of your bags easily enough by dropping them at one of the Bounce luggage storage facilities in Valencia . All Bounce luggage lockers are secure so you won't need to worry about the safety of the contents, just about the bouquets of the wine you're tasting.

Where To Go Wine Tasting In Valencia

There are several ways to go on wine tastings in and around Valencia. You can take a wine tour in the city or take a guided tour of some of the wine estates. You can do it solo by going to different wine bars - one of the best things to do at night in Valencia - or by wringing knowledge from the sommelier of one of the city's better wine bars and restaurants.

A wine tour is a great way of discovering the history of winemaking in Valencia and, after several decades of diminution, how its resurgence in popularity as a respected agricultural activity has come about.

Wine Tour Of The Old Town

There are several guided tours of Valencia that include wine tastings, and it's really a matter of personal preference which is the best wine tour for you. Some wine tours will take you around Valencia's historic district and to the Mercado Central before sitting you down to a ten-course tapas lunch accompanied by several bottles of Valencian wine. It's a great way of being introduced not just to the delicious wines from Valencia, but its exciting gastronomical culture too.

Wine Tasting With Views of The City of Arts and Sciences

The City of Arts and Sciences is an amazing place to visit that gets even better if you combine your visit with a wine tasting. Most guided tours with wine tasting included will take you first around the principal buildings of the installation before whizzing you up to the top floor of the Barcelo Valencia Hotel .

At the 270º Terrace, the guide will introduce you to local wines fermented from grapes like bobal, tempranillo, and merlot and explain the wine-making process while you enjoy the fantastic views.

Wine Bars In Valencia

From the old town to the city center to the outlying suburbs, Valencia is peppered with wine bars where you can go to taste good wines accompanied by small plates of local food. There are truly so many that deciding which one to go to can be overwhelming. To save you the stress of random choice, here are a few of the best wine bars in Valencia you really should go to when you're there.

Che Vins is part wine bar and part wine cave, so don't expect anything more decorative on the walls other than shelf after shelf of good wine. You can drop by Che Vins any day of the week for wine tastings or attend one of their regular special events, which vary from workshops to promotions of wines from specific bodegas.

Location – Carrer de Cuba, 30

Manaw Wine Bar

Located in the Old Town close to the Mercato Centrale, the Manaw Wine Bar is where you can truly immerse yourself in the culture of Valencian wine while enjoying Latin and Asian cuisine. This wine bar has a big cellar and a wine list showcasing sixty different wines, of which some are local and others international.

Location – Carrer de Mallorquins, 1

Red Red Wine

Red Red Wine is a gastro bar in Valencia that brings together Valencia wine and Valencian cuisine. Housed in a rustically decorated premises with farmhouse-style appeal, it's one of the city's hidden gems. At this bar, you can indulge in a glass of Valencian red produced from bobal grapes and dig into a typical dish for the region, paella.

Location – Carrer dels Centelles, 27

Vinorte Wine Bar

The Vinorte Wine Bar is a place that has been designed with wine lovers in mind. The contemporary décor and dimmed lighting just invites you to sit, sip and be social with others doing the same. At this gastro bar, a lot of thought is put into the collection of wines they offer, and the servers are more than happy to share their knowledge with you. They stock almost a hundred Spanish wines plus some international ones, but if you want to stay true to Valencia, start your wine tasting with a bottle of Los Almendros.

Location – Carrer de Cervantes, 10

Antiga Bodega Biosca

Located in the Rusafa district of Valencia, the Antiga Bodega Biosca has been offering wine tastings to their customers since they opened their doors in 1932. What you see on the shelves when you walk in is just part of the stock. The rest is located underneath in a massive cellar. The sommelier here has a lifetime of experience in wine and knows all about Valencia wines. If you're not sure what you want, try a glass straight from one of the barrels behind the bar.

Location – Carrer Dr Serrano, 20

Visiting Valencia's Wineries

There are no actual vineyards in the city of Valencia, so to visit wineries, explore the vineyards and see winemaking in progress, you will need to go on a half or full-day tour outside of the city. You can choose to have a rental car and do it independently or go on an organized guided tour. Either way, you'll have to see some of the beautiful Spanish countryside of the Valencia region.

On an organized Valencia wine tour, you'll be collected from your accommodation or a general pick-up point and be whisked off to the Utiel-Requena wine-growing area. There you'll get to see the extensive vineyards covering the landscape as the guide explains the growing and harvesting processes. You'll also get to visit two wineries, where there'll be wine tastings at both. This type of tour usually takes up around five hours of your day, two of which will be taken up by traveling from Valencia to Utiel-Requena.

Go it alone in a rental car, and you'll have more time to enjoy this unique wine region. Requena is a medieval town around an hour's drive from Valencia city center and fifteen minutes from Utiel. Both towns are worthy of having a look around. You'll also come across a local restaurant or two serving a typical menu consisting of three courses where you can stop for lunch in between winery visits.

Best Wineries To Visit Near Valencia

Montesanco bodega.

The Montesanco Bodega is around fifteen minutes drive west of Requena, where it's located in a lush countryside setting. The bodega is housed in an outstanding, late 19th-century manor house built by a former mayor of Valencia who honored the traditions of winemaking in the area.

Bobal is just one of the types of grape favored by the vintners on this forty-hectare wine estate. They also grow tempranillo for red wines and white macabeo and it’s from those three varieties they produce the excellent vintages they offer during a wine tasting there.

Visit Montesanco Bodega and you'll be invited to a tour of the vineyards, be shown the winemaking process, and be fed a picnic under the shade of a tree before being taken into the wine cave for a series of tastings.

Tip: It's best to reserve a time for your visit on the official website before going. There is a small charge for the vineyard tour and the wine tastings, but it's worth every penny as they make you feel truly welcome.

Murviedro – Bodega Histórica

If you find yourself wandering around the old quarter in Requena make sure not to miss going to the Murviedro – Bodega Histórica in the Plaza de Albornoz. This century-old winery matures its wine in a huge underground cave cellar. It's totally surreal.

Go for a wine tasting here, and you'll have a guided tour through the caves where the barrels are stored before having a tasting session in the very chic and modern tasting room. You can choose a wine tasting that includes two wines for less than the price of two coffees or go for a premium tasting with five amazing wines and a cold platter.

Tip: Choose the wine tasting with five wines, and you'll hardly feel the dent in your wallet as it costs less than an economical entree in most restaurants.

Bodega Honda de Vera de Estenas

The Bodega Honda de Vera de Estenas on the outskirts of Requena is one of less than one hundred wineries in Spain that have been granted permission to print Vino de Pago on their labels. Vino de Pago is a relatively new denomination that is applied to specific vineyards rather than an entire wine region.

Visit this wine estate, and you'll be taken on a tour of the extensive vineyards before being invited into the grand pink mansion that houses the winery, tasting rooms, and a family museum. Wine tastings here can often turn into a social affair where everyone groups together at long tables on the garden patio to enjoy lunch in the open air. You'll feel more like one of the family than a wine tourist when you go to this bodega, so don't expect it to be a quick visit.

Wine Festivals In Valencia

Valencia has such a long historic connection with winemaking it's not surprising the city hosts several wine festivals every year. If you're fortunate enough to be in the city at the right time of year to attend one then you'll be in a wine lover's nirvana.

Valencia Wine Festival

Winelovers and winemakers take over most of the city's Turia Gardens to celebrate the Valencia Wine Festival, the Feria de Vino, in late April. It's a five-day event where there are usually around one-hundred and fifty local wines on display and ready to be tasted as well as lots of beer and regionally produced food. There's quite a party atmosphere both during the day and at night with live concerts and plenty of kid's activities.

Fiesta de la Vendimia

This ten-day-long festival is held in Requena, and while it's primarily about the local wine, there's a lot more going on than wine tastings. If you've ever wanted to stamp on grapes with your bare feet, then this is the festival to do it at. There's also a carnival-style ritual burning of a wine monument, a carriage procession, and nighttime concerts, as well as lots of other diverse entertainment.

Valencian wines are some of the best wines in Spain. If you have three days in Valencia then you'll have plenty of time for lots of delicious wine tasting. You don't need to go on a day trip to enjoy the best wine tastings either. You can do them right in the heart of the city, and the reason for that is that Valencia wine is what makes this city's heart beat.
