Unexpected Travel costs:

First Direct also covers unexpected expenses due to unforeseen events, such as:

  • Additional travel and accommodation costs due to travel disruption
  • Missed pre-booked transportation
  • Delayed transportation
  • Lost or stolen return ticket
  • Accidental damage to passport or visa

Personal liability:

First, Direct insurance would cover you if you were the cause of an accident on a trip that led to death or injury to another person or damage to someone’s property.

Lost or stolen luggage:

If your luggage is stolen during a trip, first directory travel insurance will cover replacing your belongings.

Flight cancellations or delays:

If your flight is canceled or delayed, first directory travel insurance can help cover additional expenses, such as meals or accommodations.

Winter sports:

First Direct also covers loss, theft, or accidental damage to winter sports equipment and winter sports holiday disruption. The value of the equipment covered depends on its age, as follows

What doesn’t First Directory Travel Insurance Cover?

Travel insurance from First directory has some policy exclusions given below:

  • Trip cancellations and medical emergencies due to existing medical conditions that First Direct has not accepted.
  • Wear and tear luggage damage.
  • Loss of money and valuables.
  • Damage caused by earthquakes and hurricanes.
  • Luggage loss due to negligence.
  • Costs for running out of medication.
  • Costs of purchasing another visa or passport 
  • Expensive method of treatment of a disease.
  • Accidental death or permanent disability due to participating in aerial activities.
  • Accidental death or permanent disability caused by sickness and disease.
  • Hired winter sports equipment.
  • Contact lenses, hearing aids , and dental fittings.
  • Glass products.
  • Fines to be paid as a punishment.
  • Damage to an already insured person’s property.

First Directory Travel Insurance will not cover claims resulting from participating in the following activities:

  • Parachuting 
  • Paragliding 
  • Ski mountaineering 
  • Adventure racing
  • Boxing 
  • Horse riding 
  • Mountain biking

First Directory Travel Insurance Claim

In case of critical health injury, policyholders get medical assistance immediately by contacting First Directory 24-hour Medical Emergency Assistance,

Directory insurance will be liable for your treatment, which may involve transferring you to another hospital and paying  to bring  you back home early.

If your injury is not critical, then you can contact the Medical Emergency Assistance number before making any arrangements for: 

  • Admission to the hospital
  • Treatment, tests, or investigations as an outpatient 
  • Repeat consultations with a doctor

Keep receipts for paid costs for a minor illness or injury treated with medication from a pharmacy. 

Before putting a claim, collect these things to support your Insurance Claim:

  • Evidence of your ticket booking and then the cancellation
  • Evidence of costs you paid before trip cancellation
  • Proof that you are not able to recover your pre-paid costs
  • All medical reports 
  • Evidence vehicle accident
  • Take pictures of damage and accident
  • Confirmation report from the airline for a reason for the delay 
  • Keep receipts for expenses safe
  • Proof of stolen or damaged items, such as a written report from the police.
  • Collect evidence from your tour planner.

What's not to like

First Direct's online banking is second to none. It is easy to carry out any banking activities at a time that suits you anytime of the day or night and you are only a phone call away 24/7 if you find yourself in difficulty. There are no "bots" asking you questions but instantly you will treated with courtesy by a friendly and knowledgeable human being. Keeping your bank accounts in good order is simplicity itself. What's not to like.

I have been with first direct for 30 or so years

I have been with what was The Midland Bank all ot my banking life ,then fist direct that is no HSBC. I can say without doubt that being with first direct has been ease to access and really helpful to control my financial affairs. The phone line is also very good and has improved over the years (some 30 odd years). I have tried other banks for various things but have staid with first direct as they have delivered an exalent service

Trustworthy bank

I have been with this bank for over 20 years, I had a few problems at first, but now I’m extremely happy with how quick and easy it is to do things via the app. Whenever I have had to ring the bank, I have always been treated with the respect I expected, and the staff are very knowledgeable. Asked to provide feedback in the app

Asked to provide feedback in the app, so here it is. Once a leader in banking innovation, first direct have fallen behind in app capabilities compared to competitors. Basic tasks which don’t involve speaking to someone on live chat like change payment dates for credit cards, seeing when balance transfers end are some of the features missing and where FD now fall behind. Bill splits, easy access to saving pots, competitive interest rates - all missing. They do still provide a healthy interest free overdraft though for those just in case days. Only reason I haven’t switched accounts.

First direct for some years…

Been using First direct for some years now and not had any problems or complaints what so ever. During Covid they rang me up asking if I needed my free overdraft extended which I took up….. Amazing customer service. The few times I’ve had to call, the person as been helpful, human and down to earth, not just following a script. The only thing lagging behind over online banks is the App, it’s practical and useful but lacks some of the newer features other banks have. I’m sure those improvements are coming though.

The ease of online banking is a boon…

The ease of online banking is a boon for busy people, and/or those unable to get out and about. I would have given it 5 stars except for the fact that activating my replacement secure key this week was an utter nightmare due to the maze of opaque and at one point ambiguous, online instructions and a glitch at First Direct's end. Their person to person help I received over the phone cannot be blamed though - they are unfailing polite and patient. So I'm only docking one star for what was an experience that virtually reduced me to tears of frustration. Once that was sorted, I cannot praise First Direct enough - it makes life so much easier.

Online banking is simple

Online banking is simple, fast and secure. I have been with the bank for over thirty years and I have no complaints. I only wish they would stop sending me paper mail with information that could easily be given by e-mail or on line message in my in box. As I check my account on a regular basis I would not fail to see any messages there.

I transferred my account from Lloyds to…

I transferred my account from Lloyds to First Direct two years ago and have nothing but praise for them. I have telephoned them only on a couple of occasions but had my queries resolved very efficiently. I use the online banking facility regularly and have been impressed with how straight forward it is.

Wouldn't recommend

They were great until something went wrong and then they were completely hopeless. No acknowledgment of their service failures, no explanations, useless! Went through the complaints procedures twice before closing my accounts and withdrawing all of my savings, a shame as I banked with them of years and I used to say they were the best out there.. Will be contacting the Ombudsman.

A long standing customer

I've had a FD current account for about 25 years. It works well and meets my needs.Telephone call staff are excellent.I also use FD's share dealing service. My online portfolio incorporates a number of mistakes which I've tried to have corrected without success. In my experience the sharedealing service is inferior to banking.

Very basic banking app

It's a very basic banking app, which is extremely disappointing, considering that FD is an online bank. There are many basic features that are not included. The Biometrics are now not working, too much hassle.

Great Banking

Yes good banking, with First Direct easy to navigate, good savings rates on their regular saver, great customer service when you need them.

They are brilliant

I've been with First Direct for well over 20 years and I can honestly say I've not once had any problem or issues with them. A real person answers the phone if you need to speak to someone instead of an automated menu which is great in this day and age of automation everywhere. I can't praise them enough and highly recommend them

Poor effort, very unclear layout.

While in generally works ok, it's layout and design make it very hard to read clearly. Security procedures are a long-winded nightmare. I also use Nationwide and their app is much better.

First Direct, first class

First Direct, first class! It was so long ago I don’t remember when I opened my account but I can say I have never had a bad experience. Staff always at the end of the phone and always polite and helpful. The app is amazing and continues to improve. When abroad everything works like I was at home. Good job, thank you.

First Direct Bank is my only bank since it was set up.

I have been using First Direct Bank since it started and could not consider using any other. It has always been available and is easy to use. Its customer service is second to none and I cannot recommend first direct too highly. This recommendation is not based on a single experience but on many years of use.
