Jeff Beck announces mammoth list of US tour dates, including a string of shows with Ann Wilson and ZZ Top

The shows follow the release of Beck’s collaborative album with Johnny Depp, 18, and kick off in Texas on September 23

Jeff Beck 2022 US Tour dates

British guitar legend Jeff Beck has announced a 27-date US tour, beginning September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater, in Del Valle, Texas.

The first six shows will see Beck share a bill with ZZ Top and, for selected dates, former Heart vocalist Ann Wilson , on a brief jaunt across Texas, Tennessee and Alabama.

Beck will then undertake a solo run beginning October 1 in Atlanta, GA at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, through to November 12 at the Grand Theatre, Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada.

Reportedly, the bulk of the tour’s setlist is going to focus on Beck’s recent album, 18 (a collaborative project with Johnny Depp), which has given the guitar legend his first top 10 album entry on the Billboard chart.

However, we’re told the guitarist is also promising to pay tribute to friends and influences, alongside some older material, with his interpretations of Mahavishnu Orchestra’s You Know You Know and The Beatles’ A Day in the Life , plus Brush with the Blues all set to make appearances.

Speaking of appearances, we wonder if Depp will be showing up for any of the dates.   Depp previously joined Beck onstage for a number of shows, including a gig in the UK city of Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Beck’s revealed another star collaboration – a guest spot on Ozzy Osbourne track Patient Number 9 , back in June.

Having cultivated one of the most influential careers in rock history, Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world, and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues and jazz.

Over the course of his distinguished 50-plus-year music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards , been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time," and been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice — once as a member of THE YARDBIRDS and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl.

Beck famously replaced Eric Clapton as THE YARDBIRDS ' lead guitarist in 1965 and later went on to form THE JEFF BECK GROUP , which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. Their two albums — "Truth" (1968) and "Beck-Ola" (1969) — would become musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come.

The constantly evolving Beck 's next move — a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice , which released "Beck, Bogert And Appice" (1973),once again shattered people's preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like.

1985's "Flash" kept Beck in the spotlight as he earned the "Best Rock Instrumental" Grammy for the song "Escape" . A second Grammy came with Jeff Beck 's "Guitar Shop" with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas , and a third for "Dirty Mind" from the "You Had It Coming" album in 2001. 2009 saw the release of the platinum-selling "Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott's" , which earned a Grammy for "A Day In The Life" .

Beck 's astonishing 2010 solo album, "Emotion & Commotion" , brought about two additional Grammy Awards ; Beck was nominated in five categories before bringing home three: "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" for "Hammerhead" and "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for "Nessun Dorma" , both from "Emotion & Commotion" , and "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals" for "Imagine" , his collaboration with Herbie Hancock .

His "Rock 'N' Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul)" album was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album". In 2016 he released "Loud Hailer" and in 2017 "Jeff Beck: Live At The Hollywood Bowl" was released, both to widespread critical acclaim.

JEFF BECK Announces Fall 2022 U.S. Tour

jeff beck tour 2022

Announced today, JEFF BECK will tour the U.S. this fall in support of the newly released, highly anticipated musical collaboration with Johnny Depp, 18. The tour will kick off on September 23 in Del Valle, TX where Beck will share the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. BECK will then continue on for his headline dates in Atlanta on October 1 continuing up the east coast hitting DC, Boston and the New York area before heading west with several mid-west stops before heading to the west coast. Currently, the tour will wind up in Reno, NV on November 12th. Pre-sale tickets will be available on tomorrow, Tuesday August 16 at 10am local time (password: beck18) with public on sale Friday, August 19.  VIP packages also available here . Full itinerary is below with all dates subject to change and more dates to be announced.   The tour will focus on the new album as well as explore Beck’s legendary career through instrumentals like “You Know You Know,” “A Day in the Life” and “Brush with the Blues.” The tour will include BECK’s current band: bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson.   BECK and DEPP’s 13-track album, 18, debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart.  The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25 in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold-out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France - including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.   Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”   Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 Tour Dates

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 Tour Dates

Today, two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Jeff Beck, announced a forthcoming U.S. fall tour. The run of shows is slated to begin on Sept. 23 in Del Valle, Texas; Beck will be joined on stage for his first six shows by his longtime friends and rock icons, ZZ Top.

After a late-September tour opener, the musician’s run will wrap on Nov. 12 in Reno, Nev., but not before Beck hits numerous hot spot venues, including Atlanta’s Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, Chicago’s Chicago Theatre and Port Chester, N.Y.’s The Capitol Theatre.

Beck’s forthcoming run supports his latest album, 18 , in collaboration with Johnny Depp, which debuted at #10 on both Billboard’s Top Albums and Top Current Albums. The tour will also explore his legendary career, taking fans through renditions of Beck classics, including “Brush with the Blues” and “A Day in the Life,” coupled with new material.

After bonding over cars and guitars back in 2016, Beck and Depp quickly found themselves as kindred spirits. They agreed to create an album together and began in 2019 and worked for three years, sampling some of Depp’s originals and a mosaic of covers from numerous genres of music. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” Beck shared in a press release. He continued, “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Jeff Beck (born June 24, 1944) is a notoriously influential and inspiring English rock guitarist, who has played with the Yardbirds, the The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice.

Born in the London Borough of Sutton, UK, Beck began his musical excursions singing in his local church choir before learning to play a borrowed guitar and making his instruments. Inspired to play after hearing Les Paul, B.B. King and Steve Cropper, throughout the early ‘60s Beck played in a string of bands including the Rumbles and the Tridents and made his first vinyl appearance as a session guitarist on the Fitz and Startz single “I’m Not Running Away”.

At the request of session man Jimmy Page, The Yardbirds recruited Beck to replace Eric Clapton as lead guitarist, during Beck’s 20-month tenure The Yardbirds recorded the majority of their most popular and revered songs.

After being kicked out of the Yardbirds for rarely showing up and completing a short solo project which resulted in the two solo UK hit singles “Hi Ho Silver Lining” and “Tallyman”, Beck formed the Jeff Beck Group. The Jeff Beck Group temporarily had a line-up of Beck, ex-Shadow man Jet Harris on bass, Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronnie Wood on guitar and Nicky Hopkins on piano. The band’s first release “Truth” (1968) performed significantly better than the second “Beck-Ola” (1969) and resentment ended the band in 1969.

After a serious car accident in 1970 and a failed idea to start a power-trio with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, Beck formed a new version of the Jeff Beck Group. The reformation however didn’t cause much of a stir with the albums “Rough and Ready (1971) and “Jeff Beck Group” (1972), and with the the breakup of the band Cactus, Beck, Appice and Bogert formed a power-trio in 1973.

In 1975 after a quiet period for the guitarist, Beck release the instrumental jazz-fusion album “Blow by Blow” which garnered critical acclaim as did his follow-up with Jan Hammer on the 1976 album “Wired”. Releases from Beck after this time appeared fewer and further between with his next release the Jan Hammer-contributed “There and Back” arrived in 1980 after which Beck toured extensively, before retiring again.

Five years later in 1986 Beck released the pop/rock album “Flash” produced by Nile Rodgers. On the album the single “People Get Ready” features vocals from Rod Stewart, as well as featuring the Grammy winning instrumental single “Escape”. Prior to the release of the Grammy award winning “Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas” in 1989, Beck played lead guitar on Mick Jagger’s second solo album “Primitive Cool”.

In 1992 Beck contributed lead guitar on the Roger Water comeback album “Amused to Death” before releasing a tribute album to Gene Vincent entitled “Crazy Legs” in 1993. After a six-year break came “Who Else! You Had It Coming” in 1999, followed by “Jeff” in 2001, the live set “Performing This Week: Live at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club” in 2008, and “Emotion & Commontion” in 2010. The album won two Grammys for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Beck subsequently release a live album titled “Live and Exclusive from the Grammy Museum in 2010, followed by a tribute album to Les Paul entitled “Rock & Roll Party” the same year.

Live reviews

It's just so hard to describe Jeff Beck. You have to see him. Being one of the pioneers of rock, playing with the Yardbirds in the 60's, went from their wailing blues to psychedelic blues as the three (Beck Clapton Page) guitarists divulged into Cream and Led Zeppelin. Jeff evolved into a modern guitar God enigma.

He has smooth riffs, blending into another with complete control of his effects, never using them repeatedly for lack of musicality. His quality of playing is always forefront to the gimmicks. You could give him a cheap guitar and he will sound like Jeff Beck because of his skill of playing.

His "People Get Ready" live instrumental rendition blew me off my seat when He played with Jeff Healy, Stevie Ray Vaughn at the now called Rogers Centre. The fans that had the pleasure to see him at Ronny Scotts are probably still shaking their heads on how he played the strat with slide and whammy harmonics, simultaneously. He will sustain a bend; climaxing in a flurry riff that you would have to play it back slowly to figure out what he was playing.

He has evolved in uncharted territory. He plays with raw, controlled emotion and mastery of his instrument. He can play so soulful (Definitely Maybe - Jeff Beck Group70's), he can make the Strat cry. He once quoted that a lot of good music comes by accident and rarely repeats his riffs, unless they are patented JB riffs. He builds a sculpture, then breaks the mold. He always comes up with something new, keeping you on edge until he pulls it out unexpectedly, like he did with "People Get Ready". He is one of England's National Treasures and I am a very happy man to be a witness to the journey he has taken.

Well to start with, the show for Jeff Beck was very disappointing. Most of his songs were just screaming distorted sounds that sounded the same throughout the entire performance. We mainly purchased tickets to see him on stage with bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, who was not on his show! Instead he had a mediocre bass player who did nothing to add to the songs played. Tal makes Jeff play more melodic with feeling. Even on his ballad song "Cause We Ended As Lovers" had no bass solo, a staple part for Tal in which she steals the song from Jeff.

To make the show even worse than it could ever be, guitarist Buddy Guy performed right after Jeff Beck and all you heard was him saying the "F Bomb" word all night long, so disrespectful to the audience & minors that were present. If Buddy thinks by laying his guitar down while beating it with a towel while it feedsback, he should record himself & see how immature if really is, that's not music, nor beating the guitar strings with a bow. I've seen him 2xs before, and each time he has been intoxicated on stage. The worse was when he put his guitar up in the ceiling rafter while it was

feeding back & he couldn't get it down!! The entire show sucked.

Perhaps one of Britain's most celebrated musicians, guitarist Jeff Beck had the coveted opportunity to play alongside The Yardbirds as well as other iconic performers Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Now performing solo at the grand age of 70, the guitarist has not lost any of his abilities or stage presence.

An eccentric through and through, Beck was born to be onstage and you can understand why he refuses to take early retirement as you listen to the deafening cheers as he steps proudly out to his adoring crowd. Playing a bold cover of Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing' he easily demonstrates his masterful abilities and this level of expertise continues throughout the evening. His accompanying musicians are talented within their own rights, but the whole attention is well and truly on Jeff and his guitar. The complexity of 'Big Block' evokes mass cheers from the crowd and as he exits the stage they are left under the impression that Beck will not be hanging up the strings and plectrum anytime soon.

I was glad an excited to see this venue, for two of the finest, at Denver's premier stages outside this summer. Buddy Guy landed his licks, among the crowd when he walked round expressing the sources of bluesdom mixed with rock. His performance was outstanding, loved his Blues, totally.

The Jeff Beck Band was more ,of an up to date format ,moving to the next level of his career. At his age, traveling through his past, didn't seem to slow his performance one bit. His band showed their energy and flowed to us in every song played... moved the lyrics into our brains n out of our tearful eyes. The vocalists (times two) showed how to get it right. My gratitude is heart felt, Thanks to both of you, splendidly.

A terrific show on August 7th, 2016. One that will be talked about, reviewed, over all He is a Rock Legend, true to form.

I've been a jeff beck fan since the mid 60's (yes I'm an old burnout).his playing was as crisp and smooth as it was in 1971,when i last saw him live.his play list was a good representation of his work for the last several years with just enough of his early tunes thrown in to please us older fans.i would strongly recommend younger folks to go and see beck play.remember he came onto the British rock/blues scene with guitarists eric clapton, jimmy page and peter green.

The crowd was of mixed age with plenty of young folks there to check this guy out.from what i saw there were no concert antics like the 70's.my take on this show was time and money well spent. The venue daily's place ampatheatre was a pleasant surprise.thanks songkick i sure could have used you back in the day.you now have a customer for life, great experience.

This was a first class concert. I had not seen Jeff live before but was extremely impressed with the whole package, his playing, the band and the material they played. I was really impressed with the two young girls who were outstanding and the drummer was incredible. I would like to know if the drummer was Simon Phillips who played with him some years back and is, of that standard. All in all a great concert. The band was so surprised to be asked to do an encore that they had not planned for one and took a few minutes to agree on what to play. if he tours again in this country I would go back and see him again.

douglas-fraser-1’s profile image

Great show overall - but a bit short at just over 90 minutes (including an encore). Front of house mix was a bit hit and miss for first 15-20 mins (drums and bass a bit overpowering) but settled down when the male vocalist - who was outstanding- came on. Backing musicians were outstanding and Jeff was in good form with Big Block, Superstition, A Day in the Life and Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers stand outs.

Jeff lets his guitar do the talking but the show would benefit from a few more words from Jeff - he was even quieter than usual but the singer was excellent and helped communication with the audience.

I'm from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, my name is Casimiro Monge...yesterday after 30 or more years wanting to see and listen live this genius of electric guitar, i made it ! something memorable for me, a form of happiness that transcends me, his passion, his taste, his technique, his everything is really great ... for me the least predesible...you do not know what note interpret...today I can say, I will die happy !! Excellent show, great set list, although I would have liked to interpret Blue Wind of his album Wired.

Long live to Jeff Beck!!!

Jeff Beck has 5 decades of music, on Saturday night he played for only 70 minutes. 25 of those minutes we were forced to listen to Johnny Depp sing. It was the worst concert I've ever been to. Compare this concert to Santana a month ago. Santana played for 3.5 hours, tickets were only $35 and when the tickets arrived included was a copy of his latest CD. That was a concert to remember.

JOHNNY DEPP will join JEFF BECK on his upcoming North American tour beginning in early October and including the October 23 concert at The Chicago Theatre. In concert, the duo will highlight songs from their newly released musical collaboration, 18 , and join forces with Beck’s current band (bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson) to perform a lengthy set heavy with tunes from throughout Jeff Beck’s career.

Beck and Depp’s 13-track album, 18 , debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart.

“The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz.

When Jeff Beck Opened His Final Tour, With Johnny Depp

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp opened their collaborative tour with a show at The Anthem in Washington, DC on Oct. 4, 2022. The evening began with a solo set from Beck and his backing band (bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson). Opening with “Freeway Jam” he continued with his signature versions of “You Know You Know,” “Big Block,” and “Brush with the Blues” and from his new album with Depp, 18 , “Caroline No”. At the midway point of the set, Depp stepped out from the wings to join Beck on songs from the new album including “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” and “Isolation” before ending the night with their take on the Killing Joke song, “The Death and Resurrection Show.”

The tour, originally announced on Aug. 15, began on Sept. 23 in Texas where Beck (alone) shared the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. Beck joined ZZ Top on stage each night for their encores. Here they are performing “La Grange” on Sept. 25.

Beck and Depp headed up the east coast before continuing with several mid-west stops (including one date in Canada) before heading to the west coast.

From the original Aug. 15 tour announcement: Beck found a kindred spirit in Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.

One of the Oct. 4 opening night encores was a cover of “Little Wing”

The tour spanned 21 dates, ending on Nov. 12. Beck, born on June 24, 1944, was universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ year career, he earned eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. The Biggest Milestones In Jeff Beck's Illustrious Career

Jeff Beck staring ahead

The sudden and unexpected death of guitarist Jeff Beck in January 2023 (per The Guardian ) came just as his career was entering a new phase. Just months before, he had released a new album, "18," in partnership with Johnny Depp after several years of collaboration (per Billboard ). If that particular endeavor was somewhat tarnished by the controversies surrounding Depp's personal life, it didn't alter the overall popular perception of Beck, whom The Telegraph once referred to as the guitarist's guitarist.

The esteem with which Beck's peers held his work as a musician did not translate into a comparable measure of fame with the general public. While the names of other guitarists who first came on the scene in 1960 reached everyone's lips, Beck's was often well out of the limelight. But that was as much by his own choice as it was the whims of fate — he rejected offers that might have brought him more fame and fortune and focused instead on experimentation and variety with his playing. His range and talent made him an influential force behind many trends in rock, pop, and jazz throughout his career, despite his relatively low profile.

He hopped around bands early in his career

Jeff Beck carries guitar down road

Jeff Beck, real name Gregory Arnold Beck, was born in Surrey on June 24, 1944, and took to the guitar young. According to Loudwire , he was so enthusiastic about the instrument in his youth that he tried to build his own more than once before finally getting a loaner. He took his passion with him to the Wimbledon College of Art, where he played with numerous bands in short stints that would typify his later journeyman behavior as a professional musician. According to Peter Buckley's "The Rough Guide to Rock,"  Beck bounced around four different groups while at Wimbledon. Among them was Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages, and Beck's work for them can be heard in their single "Dracula's Daughter." But his tenure with them was short, as it was with the Rumbles, the Crescents, and the Bandits.

Beck demonstrated his changeability during this time as well. Per Annette Carson's "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers,"  he was first exposed to R&B during this period and went all in on it. He was so swept up by the new sound that he formed his own R&B group, the Nightshift. The band gained a measure of fame and collaborated with a young Tim Rice on the single "That's My Story," but Beck continued to play with other bands, and the Nightshift eventually fizzled out. R&B remained an attraction, compelling Beck to join the Tridents, but he wasn't long with them either.

He came to fame through the Yardbirds

The Yardbirds perform live

Jeff Beck's early musical wandering while at college built up his reputation among rock 'n' rollers in the early 1960s, per Annette Carson's "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers."  It also put him on a career trajectory with uncanny similarities to another skilled and versatile guitarist: Eric Clapton. The parallels only deepened when Beck was chosen to replace Clapton as guitarist for the rock band the Yardbirds.

Beck's presence radically altered the Yardsticks' reputation. Per The Guardian , they went from a bluesy group to the cutting edge of rock and pop. He experimented frequently, generating new sounds that often anticipated their more widespread and popular use by later groups. Among his innovations was making use of feedback, a technique he stumbled upon by accident. "We played larger venues," he told the BBC , "and the PA was inadequate. So we cranked up the level and found out that feedback would happen. I started using it because it was controllable – you could play tunes with it."

For all his influence through and over the group, Beck's membership of the Yardsticks was tenuous and often unhappy. By his own admission (per "Crazy Fingers" ), his temper could be ferocious, brought out by faulty equipment, unenthusiastic audiences, and the rigors of touring. After a particularly intense spat that resulted in a smashed guitar, the other members of the Yardsticks had enough and arranged to part company with their guitarist. Beck's stint with them came to about two years.

His hit solo single was a mixed blessing for him

Jeff Beck models a floral shirt

After leaving the Yardsticks, Jeff Beck toyed with the idea of leaving music altogether. According to the BBC , he said as much at the time. His seriousness in declaring such was undermined by how quickly he found new work. Beck fell in with music producer Mickie Most, who encouraged the guitarist to produce something popular. While Beck felt that Most showed very little interest in the type of recording he wanted to do, the producer's success and influence convinced him to put out a solo single.

"Hi Ho Silver Lining" was first released in 1967 (per Rolling Stone ) and was a big hit. It placed on the charts again in 1972. But the pop tune's content and popularity did not sit easily with Beck. He didn't enjoy providing vocals for the song and told Making Music magazine (via Martin Power's "Hot Wired Guitar: The Life of Jeff Beck" ) that singing was embarrassing for him. Divorced as it was from his preferred musical explorations, he continued to have mixed feelings for "Silver Lining." At times, he said it wasn't such a bad tune to be associated with; at others, he referred to the song as "a pink toilet sink hanging around my neck for the rest of my f****** life."

The (first) Jeff Beck Group helped pave the way for heavy metal

The Jeff Beck Group performs

For all his renown within guitar and rock circles, Jeff Beck's efforts to have a stable group of his own were not successful. In 1967, less than a year after his departure from the Yardbirds, he formed the Jeff Beck Group (per The Guardian ). After a few bumps in the road, the band's lineup was made up of Beck on guitar, singer Rod Stewart, bassist Ronnie Wood, and drummer Micky Waller (per Classic Rock ). And after a few initial tours, they put out their first album, "Truth."

Classic Rock called "Truth" the holy grail for rock band debut albums, though Beck saw it as no more or less than another record release. Largely made up of covers the group had honed in live shows, it was an eclectic mix of musical styles and a herald for the emerging heavy metal sound. Among those influenced was Led Zeppelin, who shared a manager with the Jeff Beck Group. Indeed, when Led Zeppelin released their first album a few months after "Truth," the two had a song in common: Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me."

Among Beck's initial obstacles in forming the band were his personality clashes with potential members. The Jeff Beck Group were often at loggerheads, and tensions rose during a U.S. tour according to the BBC . The band fractured in 1970 after releasing just one more album. A second Jeff Beck group was similarly short-lived.

His switch to instrumental music was a game changer

Jeff Beck pulls guitar to right

When the first Jeff Beck Group split up, Jeff Beck himself didn't have long to consider its impact on his career (per Britannica ). More pressing was his recovery from a serious car crash in 1969 (via The Hollywood Reporter ). After recovering, Beck tried to reform the Jeff Beck Group with a new line-up but enjoyed little success with it. According to Ultimate Classic Rock , he could have become part of the Rolling Stones — he auditioned for the legendary band. But besides considering himself a poor fit, Beck's musical interests were shifting.

His follow-up to his two short-lived Jeff Beck Groups would be "Blow by Blow," an all-instrumental solo album. It wasn't done entirely on Beck's own, and among his collaborators was producer and arranger George Martin of the Beatles . With a small group of musicians and Martin's arrangements, Beck's guitar essentially replaced the part kept for a lead vocalist throughout "Blow by Blow," and Beck would largely follow that template for the rest of his career.

"Blow by Blow" was not only a hit record in 1975 — it was celebrated for being a successful fusion of rock with jazz. But the very thing that won it praise was something Beck expressed regret for years later. Speaking to Guitar Player in 1989, he said that he wished he had never done the album, considering the impulse behind fusion akin to mixing badly-matched flavors. "I wish I had stayed with earthy rock 'n' roll," he added.

He and Clapton came together for The Secret Policeman's Other Ball

Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton perform

Coincidental parallels kept Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton connected. Both came up in the same musical environment, and both served as guitarists for the Yardbirds. The connections, however, didn't make for a lasting friendship. Beck, per Classic Rock , was sure that Clapton resented him for assuming his role with the band and being a part of their growing success. The Yardbirds' tour of the United States with Beck, he suspected, was a particularly raw nerve for his predecessor.

Despite this assumption of rivalry, Beck and Clapton would go on to collaborate for an Amnesty International benefit concert. The Secret Policeman's Other Ball, held in 1981, was a development on earlier comedy benefits in Britain (via Annette Carson's  "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers" ). Funnymen were still on hand, but the program was expanded to include pop and rock acts. Among them was a jam session by Beck and Clapton, both of them shredding through multiple covers.

The rivalry softened over the years. Carson described them as friends in her book, and Beck conceded to Classic Rock that Clapton's perceived jealousy subsided with time. When a documentary was produced on Beck, he told Rolling Stone that the one part that brought him to tears was Clapton's praise.

He contributed to film scores and soundtracks

Jeff Beck poses in director's chair

Jeff Beck wasn't afraid to retreat from the spotlight. After achieving massive success with albums and tours throughout the 1970s, he disappeared for the better part of three years. "The pitch I play at is so intense that I just can't do it every night," the BBC quoted him as saying. When he came back on the music scene, it was often in partnership with other artists.

Some of those partnerships were done on behalf of motion pictures. One of his more prominent film jobs came in 1988 when, according to  "Jeff Beck: Crazy Fingers,"  he lent his guitar and face to the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle "Twins." Beck played a bandleader strumming country tunes and recorded a cover of "The Train Kept A-Rollin'." Beck's recording of "House of the Blue Danube," done with impresario Malcolm McLaren, was used in the trailers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" two years later.

In 1990, Beck was asked by composer Hans Zimmer to contribute to the score of "Days of Thunder" (per "Crazy Fingers" ). Beck claimed not to have enjoyed the assignment, recorded in four days, and none of his playing was on the soundtrack album. But it did make it into the film itself.

Jeff Beck reunited with an old bandmate for a hit single

Rod Stewart sings Jeff Beck plays

By his own admission, Jeff Beck could sometimes have hostile relations with bandmates. Rod Stewart, the lead vocalist of the first Jeff Beck Group, put some of that down to Beck's inadequate efforts as a leader. "It was all about the music, as far as [Beck] was concerned," Stewart wrote in "Rod: The Autobiography."  "He appeared unconcerned about how the band's financial affairs were being run and about staying on top of things on behalf of his musicians." The mismanagement of money sometimes left Stewart with no cash on hand for food, and Beck was stingy with affection for his bandmates.

For his part, Beck told Guitar World that there were jealousy issues on Stewart's part. But Beck could be glib about the relationship. When the latter was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Beck was asked to say a few words. According to "Rod Stewart: The New Biography"  by Tim Ewbank and Stafford Hildred, Beck told the crowd that he and Stewart "have a love-hate relationship. He loves me and I hate him."

Despite such comments, the two remained on fairly good terms, and in 1983, they reunited for a cover of "People Get Ready." The song, first performed in 1965 by the Impressions (per Ultimate Classic Rock ), was a minor hit, led to additional recordings between Beck and Stewart, and featured on a Grammy-winning album.

He recorded with famous names as a journeyman guitarist

Jeff Beck and Mick Jagger rehearse

Jeff Beck kept busy throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but he couldn't be said to have a stable professional home. He was something of a journeyman, playing guitar with and for various artists and groups while taking periodic and lengthy absences from the scene. AllMusic names some of these collaborations: A 1980 recording with Jan Hammer, an album produced with Nile Rodgers and featuring Rod Stewart's vocals in 1985, the lead guitar part for Mick Jagger's "Primitive Cool" in 1987, and the same role for Roger Waters' "Amused to Death" in 1992. Beck's own output included "Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop" at the end of the decade, and he recruited Stevie Ray Vaughan for the accompanying tour.

Many of these artists would be quick to pay tribute to Beck after his death in January 2023. "[Beck] was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me and respond," Stewart wrote on Twitter . "Jeff, you were the greatest, my man." On the same platform , Jagger called Beck "one of the greatest guitar players in the world."

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice

Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck embrace

Twice in his career, Jeff Beck was honored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, albeit for different achievements. The first time came in 1993 when the Yardbirds were inducted. Per the Hall of Fame's website , members from throughout the band's short but impactful time were brought in for the ceremony; besides Beck, guitarists Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page were in attendance. The happy occasion didn't pass without Beck offering a facetious comment on the band's past tensions. In an acceptance speech (via YouTube ), Beck noted he had done other work and added, "Somebody told me I should be proud tonight. But I'm not, because they kicked me out. They did. F*** them."

Beck's former bandmates seemed to take his flippancy in good humor, and in 2009, it would be one of them, Page, who introduced Beck as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his individual work (via the Hall of Fame's website ). Page offered effusive praise for Beck's work in innovating on the possibilities of the electric guitar, and Beck seemed in a more sentimental mood as he accepted the honor. "I've been very naughty all my life, and I don't deserve this," he said before going on to thank friends and colleagues. Not that sincerity stopped him from offering a middle finger to those who hadn't supported him.

He dabbled with electronica when he returned to albums

Jeff Beck embraces his guitar

The 1990s saw Jeff Beck make another turn into a new musical genre. After experimenting with rock, jazz, R&B, fusion, and pop, he decided to dive into electronica. In 1999, he released the album "Who Else!", his first collection of original material in years. It wasn't all Beck's work; according to Ultimate Classic Rock , he was only credited on three of the songs. Most of it was written by Tony Hymas, Beck's keyboard player for many years, and Beck was happy to acknowledge the contribution.

"If this album does anything, I shall be so pleased I stuck with loyalty to [Hymas's] writing," Beck told Fuzz magazine in Sweden (via Guy Guitars ), adding that keyboardists were the people to turn to for fresh content. The collaboration and the resulting sounds were apparently enough to satisfy Beck, as he continued to pursue electronic music in his records until 2003.

Public perception was another matter —  Rolling Stone gave "Who Else!" a largely glowing review, while critic Robert Christgau declared it a bomb with a simple icon (via Christgau's personal website ). But the album did fairly good business; one assumes, then, that Beck was pleased to follow Hymas' lead after all.

From Brian Wilson to Johnny Depp

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp chat

The last stage of Jeff Beck's career began with a fresh collaboration. He teamed with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys in the 2010s for a series of live shows (per the BBC ). The tours were meant to promote an album the two had performed on, but the record wasn't finished when the tour began, and the chemistry between Beck and Wilson didn't come to much. In interviews with Mojo and Classic Rock (via Louder ), Beck complained of being pressured into promotional efforts, being denied time off even for medical procedures, and of a lack of communication and support from Wilson.

But as that partnership deteriorated, Beck found another: Johnny Depp. He and the actor-guitarist struck up a friendship following the tours with Wilson, and from there, they moved into musical collaboration. Beck and Depp's proved a happier relationship, and after playing together at the tail end of the 2010s, they recorded and released an album, "18," in 2022. Their time together coincided with Depp's highly publicized conflict with ex-wife Amber Heard, a fact that sometimes colored perceptions of their album. The Guardian's review of "18" dismissed it as an exercise in self-pity on Depp's part. But Beck and Depp remained on good terms until the former's death in 2023, and Depp was allegedly among the last visitors Beck received (per People ).

Jeff Beck, Guitarist With a Chapter in Rock History, Dies at 78

His playing with the Yardbirds and as leader of his own bands brought a sense of adventure to their groundbreaking recordings.

Jeff Beck, one of the most skilled, admired and influential guitarists in rock history, died on Tuesday in a hospital near his home at Riverhall, a rural estate in southern England. He was 78.

The cause was bacterial meningitis, Melissa Dragich, his publicist, said.

During the 1960s and ’70s, as either a member of the Yardbirds or as leader of his own bands, Mr. Beck brought a sense of adventure to his playing that helped make the recordings by those groups groundbreaking.

In 1965, when he joined the Yardbirds to replace another guitar hero, Eric Clapton, the group was already one of the defining acts in Britain’s growing electric blues movement. But his stinging licks and darting leads on songs like “Shapes of Things” and “Over Under Sideways Down” added an expansive element to the music that helped signal the emerging psychedelic rock revolution.

Three years later, when Mr. Beck formed his own band, later known as the Jeff Beck Group — along with Rod Stewart, a little-known singer at the time, and the equally obscure Ron Wood on bass — the weight of the music created an early template for heavy metal. Specifically, the band’s 1968 debut, “Truth,” provided a blueprint that another former guitar colleague from the Yardbirds, Jimmy Page, drew on to found Led Zeppelin several months later.

In 1975, when Mr. Beck began his solo career with the “Blow by Blow” album, he reconfigured the essential formula of that era’s fusion movement, tipping the balance of its influences from jazz to rock and funk, in the process creating a sound that was both startlingly new and highly successful. “Blow by Blow” became a Billboard Top 5 and, selling a million or more copies, a platinum hit.

Along the way, Mr. Beck helped either pioneer or amplify important technical innovations on his instrument. He elaborated the use of distortion and feedback effects, earlier explored by Pete Townshend; intensified the effect of bending notes on the guitar; and widened the range of expression that could be coaxed from devices attached to the guitar like the whammy bar.

Drawing on such techniques, Mr. Beck could weaponize his strings to hit like a stun gun or caress them to express what felt like a kiss. His work had humor, too, with licks that could cackle and leads that could tease.

“Even in the Yardbirds, he had a tone that was melodic, but in your face — bright, urgent and edgy,” wrote Mike Campbell, of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, for an article in Rolling Stone magazine to accompany a poll that named Mr. Beck the fifth greatest guitar player of all time. “It’s like he’s saying: ‘I’m Jeff Beck. I’m right here. You can’t ignore me.’”

“Everybody respects Jeff,” Mr. Page said in a 2018 documentary titled “Still on the Run: The Jeff Beck Story.” “He’s an extraordinary musician. He’s having a conversation with you when he’s playing.”

Despite the accolades, Mr. Beck never achieved the sales or popularity of the guitarists considered to be his peers, including Mr. Page, Mr. Clapton and one of the players he admired most, Jimi Hendrix. Only two of his albums achieved platinum status in the United States, including “Wired,” his 1976 follow-up to “Blow by Blow.”

“Part of the reason is never having attempted to get into mainstream pop, rock or heavy metal or anything like that,” he told the arts website Elsewhere in 2009. “Shutting those doors means you’ve only got a limited space to squeeze through.”

It hurt, too, that the mercurial Mr. Beck often worked without a lead singer, and that his groups seldom lasted long. His first band, with Mr. Stewart and Mr. Wood, stood on the cusp of superstardom, with an invitation to play Woodstock. But Mr. Beck turned down the offer, and the group dissolved shortly thereafter.

Another band he led that held commercial promise, Beck, Bogert & Appice (featuring the rhythm section of Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice, formerly of Vanilla Fudge) earned a gold album in 1973, but Mr. Beck scotched the project after less than two years. Not that he minded his status in the industry.

“I’ve never made the big time, mercifully,” Mr. Beck told Rolling Stone in 2018. “When you look around and see who has made it huge, it’s a really rotten place to be.”

Grammys and Gold

Even so, he earned eight gold albums over more than six decades. He also amassed seven Grammys, six in the category of best rock instrumental performance and one for best pop collaboration with vocals. He was inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame twice, as part of the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a solo star in 2009.

“Jeff Beck was on another planet,” Mr. Stewart said in a statement on Wednesday. “He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group, and we haven’t looked back since. He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man.”

Geoffrey Arnold Beck was born on June 24, 1944, in South London to Arnold and Ethel Beck. His mother was a candy maker, his father an accountant. Mr. Beck told Guitar Player Magazine in 1968 that his mother had “forced” him to play piano two hours a day when he was a boy. “That was good,” he said, “because it made me realize that I was musically sound. My other training consisted of stretching rubber bands over tobacco cans and making horrible noises.”

He became attracted to electric guitar after hearing Les Paul’s work and was later drawn to the work of Cliff Gallup, lead guitarist for Gene Vincent’s band, and the American player Lonnie Mack. He became entranced not only by the sound of the guitar but also by its mechanics.

“At the age of 13, I built two or three of my own guitars,” Mr. Beck wrote in an essay for a book about his career published in 2016 titled “Beck 01: Hot Rods and Rock & Roll.” “It was fun just to look at it and hold it. I knew where I was headed.”

He enrolled in Wimbledon College of Art but spent more time playing in bands. Dropping out of school, he began to do studio session work and in 1965 was invited to join the Yardbirds through Jimmy Page, whom Mr. Beck had befriended as a teenager and who had just turned that job down.

Though he was with the Yardbirds for only 20 months, Mr. Beck played on most of their successful songs, starting with “Heart Full of Soul,” which broke the Top 10 in Billboard and got to No. 2 in Britain. It was fired by his burning lead guitar line, which took influence from Indian music and which served as the song’s hook.

In 1966, the Yardbirds’ single “Shapes of Things,” which got to No. 11 in the United States (No. 3 in Britain), included a frantic double-time solo by Mr. Beck that became one of the band’s most celebrated showcases.

At the suggestion of his manager, Mr. Beck recorded an instrumental piece for a potential solo project in May 1966 titled “Beck’s Bolero.” It featured on rhythm guitar Mr. Page (who received writing credit on the song), the Who’s Keith Moon on drums, the future Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and the in-demand session pianist Nicky Hopkins.

A signature instrumental with a complex, unfolding structure, the song wasn’t released at the time, dashing Mr. Beck’s hope that this lineup would comprise his next band. Instead, he soldiered on with the Yardbirds, who then added Mr. Page, first on bass and later in a dueling lead guitar role with Mr. Beck. That fleeting lineup was immortalized in “Blow Up,” the Mod-era film by the director Michelangelo Antonioni, in which they performed a manic version of their song “Train Kept A-Rollin,’” recast as “Stroll On.”

Tensions which had been brewing between Mr. Beck and the rest of the Yardbirds came to a boil on an exhausting U.S. tour that fall, compelling him to quit. He later considered this period the low point of his career.

“All of a sudden, you’re nobody,” he told Rolling Stone in 2016. “Because the band were able to carry on” with Mr. Page, “it was almost like I was airbrushed out of it.”

Even so, a single was released under his own name in March 1967, “Hi-Ho Silver Lining,” which featured a rare vocal by Mr. Beck, which he abhorred. “I sound unbearably bad,” he told Music Radar in 2021.

Still, the song got to No. 15 in Britain, and its B-side provided a home for “Beck’s Bolero.”

He found more satisfaction by forming the first Jeff Beck Group, with Mr. Stewart, Mr. Wood, and Mr. Hopkins along with the drummer Mickey Waller. Columbia Records signed them and issued their debut, “Truth,” in the summer of 1968. It boasted a new, heavier version of the Yardbirds’ “Shapes of Things,” along with “Beck’s Bolero.”

“Truth” got to No. 15 in Billboard and went gold, fired by its fresh mix of booming rock and emotive soul. Its follow-up, “Beck-Ola,” which subbed the drummer Tony Newman for Mr. Waller, was released a year later and mirrored the debut’s success. But the band imploded almost immediately after.

“I don’t know what happened,” Mr. Beck told Music Radar. “It was a lack of material,” he said, plus, he surmised, Mr. Stewart “wanted to see his name up there instead of mine.”

One Band, Then Another

In the fall of 1969, Mr. Beck tried to rally by planning a new group with Mr. Bogert and Mr. Appice, but that fell apart after Mr. Beck fractured his skull in a car accident. In the meantime, the two other musicians formed the blues-rock band Cactus.

Following a long convalescence, a new version of the Jeff Beck Group emerged in 1971, with the soul singer Bobby Tench, the drummer Cozy Powell and the keyboardist Max Middleton, who encouraged Mr. Beck to explore jazz.

Their debut, “Rough and Ready,” released in October, featured more original compositions from Mr. Beck than usual, but it barely made Billboard’s Top 50. Its chaser, “Jeff Beck Group,” which tipped toward the soulful side of their sound, did better, breaking Billboard’s Top 20 and going gold.

Again, however, the changeable Mr. Beck yearned for something new, so when Cactus broke up, he reconvened with Mr. Bogert and Mr. Appice — the rhythm section he had considered earlier — to form the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice.

A notable track on their 1973 debut album, “Beck, Bogert & Appice,” was a version of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” But Mr. Beck was dissatisfied with both his band’s version of the song and the band itself, and so, during the recording of a second album, produced by Jimmy Miller, he broke up the group, although a live album, “Beck, Bogert & Appice Live in Japan,” came out afterward, in 1975 — a year that changed Mr. Beck’s career.

Daringly, Mr. Beck devoted most of the “Blow by Blow” solo album, recorded in 1974 and released in 1975, to instrumentals, inspired by the creativity of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the soaring work of the band’s fusion guitarist, John McLaughlin.

To help capture that group’s feel, Mr. Beck hired the producer George Martin, who had overseen Mahavishnu’s album “Apocalypse” the year before (and who had achieved his greatest renown with the Beatles). Mr. Beck told The New Statesman magazine in 2016 that Mr. Martin had provided “a massive pair of wings.”

“Just knowing that somebody with such sensitive ears was approving of what was going on, you were flying,” he said.

Mr. Beck’s follow-up album, “Wired,” featured two players from Mahavishnu: the drummer Narada Michael Walden and the keyboardist Jan Hammer, expanding the fusion element in the music. Mr. Beck later toured with Mr. Hammer’s band, resulting in the album “Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live,” which went gold in 1977.

Mr. Hammer was also instrumental in Mr. Beck’s 1980 album, “There & Back,” which got to No. 21 on Billboard’s chart. In 1985, Mr. Beck returned to working with vocalists for his “Flash” album, on which Mr. Stewart sang a version of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready.” (The video became an MTV hit.) Another instrumental recording, “Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop,” issued in 1989, became his final gold album.

Starting in the 1990s, Mr. Beck began to do prodigious session work, providing solos on albums by Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Waters, Kate Bush, Tina Turner and others. He showed the continued breadth of his style with his “Emotion & Commotion” album in 2010, which included the standard “Over the Rainbow” and Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma.” The latter track won a Grammy, and the album reached No. 11 in Billboard.

Over the next few decades, Mr. Beck continued to tour and to record, most recently yielding a collaboration album with the actor and guitarist Johnny Depp, titled “18,” in 2022.

Mr. Beck married Sandra Cash in 2005, and she survives him.

To his fans, and to himself, Mr. Beck was so deeply identified with his guitar — particularly the Fender Stratocaster — that he seemed inseparable from it.

“My Strat is another arm,” he told Music Radar. “I’ve welded myself to that. Or it’s welded itself to me, one or the other.”

He added: “It’s a tool of great inspiration and torture at the same time. It’s forever sitting there, challenging you to find something else in it. But it is there if you really search.”

Alex Traub contributed reporting.

An earlier version of this obituary referred incorrectly to the guitarist Lonnie Mack. He was American, not British.

An earlier version of this obituary misstated the given name of a member of the band Beck, Bogert & Appice. He was Tim Bogert, not Tom.

Jeff Beck, Rock’s Quiet Guitar Virtuoso, Dead at 78

Jeff Beck , the blues-rock innovator and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who revolutionized how the guitar is played, died Tuesday at the age of 78.

Beck’s family confirmed the former Yardbirds guitarist’s death Wednesday. “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing,” Beck’s family said in a statement. ”After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

Beck, an eight-time Grammy winner, was twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — both as a member of the Yardbirds as well as for his work with his own Jeff Beck Group.

“ Jeff Beck  has the combination of brilliant technique with personality,” the Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell wrote when Beck placed Number Five on Rolling Ston e’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists . “It’s like he’s saying, ‘I’m Jeff Beck. I’m right here. And you can’t ignore me.’ Even in the  Yardbirds , he had a tone that was melodic but in-your-face — bright, urgent, and edgy, but sweet at the same time. You could tell he was a serious player, and he was going for it. He was not holding back.”

But Beck would no longer be in the band by the time the film came out. He quit in November 1966 after an illness and suffering a breakdown. In 1967, he recorded the pop single “ Hi Ho Silver Lining ,” a track on which he sang lead vocals, that became a hit, while its B-side, “ Beck’s Bolero ,” foreshadowed Led Zeppelin as it featured Page and bassist John Paul Jones accompanying Beck alongside the Who’s Keith Moon and pianist Nicky Hopkins. That same year, he founded the heavy-blues focused Jeff Beck Group, which featured singer Rod Stewart and future Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood on bass. The group issued two albums — 1968’s Truth and 1969’s Beck-Ola — and turned down an appearance at Woodstock before Beck disbanded the ensemble, leading Stewart and Wood to join Faces.

“Jeff Beck was on another planet. He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven’t looked back since,” Stewart tweeted Wednesday. “He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything. RIP.”

When Beck reemerged, he had moved on from blues rock to instrumental jazz-fusion. His 1975 album, Blow by Blow , was a surprise hit, reaching Number Four in the U.S. and going platinum. Beatles producer George Martin helmed the album, and Beck later credited him with salvaging his career. “I thought, ‘This sounds like we’re playing in the room — it’s clear and fabulous,'” Beck later said of the sound of Blow by Blow . “That first album was a joy.” He supported the record by touring with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1975 and releasing Wired , a collaboration with Mahavishnu keyboardist Jan Hammer, the following year. He took a few years off and came back with another Hammer collaboration, There and Back , in 1980.

Perhaps worried he’d become doomed to guitar-nerd oblivion, he teamed with Stewart again on 1985’s Flash album for a cover of “ People Get Ready, ” which became a hit. That album’s “ Escape ,” an instrumental, won him the Best Rock Instrumental Performance Grammy the following year. He’d earn another Grammy four years later with Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop With Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas .

“I was glad on the one hand that guitar was still king,” Beck once said of the Eighties. “[Guitarists] were flying a great flag for the guitar. …  I had every respect for Vai and Eddie Van Halen. Great. Let them have that. As long as it doesn’t encroach on my style — and it didn’t — I was happy.”

He spent the rest of the Eighties working as a guest musician, adding solos to albums by Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, and Jon Bon Jovi. But he had trouble replicating his success as a solo artist for decades. The Nineties found him bouncing from rockabilly on 1993’s Crazy Legs to techno, on 1999’s Who Else!

Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil added, “Jeff Beck always comes to mind. He’s an incredibly proficient guitarist, but he isn’t Mr. Pedant. The late Seventies to late Eighties were full of guitarists who were preoccupied with technique, like the guitar wasn’t a voice but a tool to be mastered. Jeff Beck wasn’t that way — he used it as a microphone. He was confident.” (In that same feature, Beck credited Django Reinhardt as his chief inspiration.)

In 2009, 17 years after Beck was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Yardbirds, he delivered one of the greatest induction speeches of all time when he reentered the Rock Hall for his solo work. “Someone told me I should be proud tonight. But I’m not, because they kicked me out. They did. Fuck them,” he quipped at the 1992 ceremony. “I couldn’t believe I was even nominated,” Beck  told  Rolling Stone  at the time. “I thought the Yardbirds was as close as I’d get to getting in. I’ve gone on long after that and gone through different musical changes. It’s very nice to hear that people have been listening.”

Although Beck made his initial mark in the British Invasion and pioneering blues-rock, the virtuosic guitarist continued to push his musicianship into other genres, from jazz fusion to trance (“ Rollin’ and Tumblin’ ” with Imogen Heap) to orchestral rock (2010’s  Emotion and Commotion ) to heavy metal; in 2022, he appeared on  the title track  of Ozzy Osbourne’s  Patient Number 9 . “Having someone like Jeff Beck play on my album is just incredible, a total honor. There’s no other guitar player that plays like him and his solo on ‘Patient Number 9’ is just jaw-dropping,” Osbourne said at the time.

Steven Van Zandt, who recently performed with Beck and Depp, paid tribute to Beck on Wednesday, and wrote, “Not only was he a major influence, and his genius an infinite source of joy my entire lifetime, he was in great spirits when we spoke a few weeks ago having done a flawless show with Johnny the night before at the Capitol. Unreal.”

As a solo artist, Beck also remained prolific and vital: He won seven of his eight career Grammy Awards from 1989 onward, including a dominating streak of wins and nominations in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance over the first decade of the 2000s.

Musicians continued to pay tribute to Beck on Wednesday evening. “Always and ever,” Clapton wrote on social media with a photo of Beck performing. Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson also paid homage, with Lee posting that “he was my personal favourite guitarist, someone who truly blew my mind from then ‘til now. Lifeson shared later that evening that “Jeff Beck’s playing made me smile and made me cry and made me try to be a better player and most of all, made me and countless others seek the ultimate expression of who we are as players.”

“Jeff Beck was a lovely man with a wicked sense of humour who played some of the best guitar music ever to come out of Great Britain. He was a superb technician and could strip down his guitar and put it back together again in time for the show,” Paul McCartney wrote on social media.
