Writing CVs and doing interviews can be tricky, even if you've already had a couple of successful interviews under your belt.

When it comes to either, we can only say that practice indeed makes perfect. But if you like some extra help to set yourself up for success when applying for a job at VisitScotland, you're free to check out some of the following tips.

We can't guarantee that following these tips to the letter will mean that you'll get the job you're applying for. But following these tips certainly won't hurt your chances.

At VisitScotland, we always take the time to read any information you send us attentively. You can set yourself up for success by ensuring that the information in anything you send us is easy to extract.

How to make your CV stand out

Tailor it for each application.

Tailor your CV to the specific job you're applying for. Carefully review the job description and requirements.

Make sure to highlight the skills and experience that are most relevant to the role. This customisation shows employers that you took the time to understand their needs and are a strong fit for the position.

Include relevant keywords

To increase your chances of being selected, incorporate relevant keywords from the job description into your CV. This can help our hiring managers more easily identify if you have the right skills for the job.

Taking the time to do so also shows your enthusiasm for us as an organisation.

Keep it concise and relevant

Your CV should be clear, concise, and focused on the most relevant information. Avoid lengthy paragraphs. Instead use bullet points to highlight key achievements, skills, and experiences.

Highlight your accomplishments

Don't just list your job responsibilities. Emphasise your accomplishments and the impact you made in previous roles.

Use quantifiable metrics when possible to show your achievements and the results you delivered. This helps to make your CV more compelling and showcases your value to potential employers.

The most important thing during an interview is to just be yourself and get your personality across.

To set you up for success, we included some top tips. They are no guarantee that you get the job you're applying for, but they might help you give an excellent interview performance.

Research VisitScotland

We recommend you take some time to research VisitScotland prior to your interview. This will give you a wider idea of what we do as an organisation and how we promote our amazing country.

Read your job description

If we invite you for an interview, we'll send you an email with a job description attached. Read this carefully as we will tailor your interview questions to the role.

With some interviews, we will ask you to give a short presentation. But we will give you the topic beforehand so that you have plenty of time to prepare and deliver a great presentation.

Practice for the interview

Doing interviews can be challenging, even if you successfully applied for jobs in the past. So, having the opportunity to practice with the right people might really set you up for success.

Think for example of someone who's an expert in doing successful interviews, or of someone who works a similar job as the one you're applying for.

Their bespoke interview tips could really come in handy.

Present yourself well

It almost goes without saying, but come to the interview dressed formally and on time. Some interviews are conducted online, so it's good to double check your set-up beforehand for things like:

  • are my camera and microphone working?
  • is my camera parallel to my face and stable, and is my face well-lit?
  • can I expect no distracting noises in the room where I will have the online interview?
  • does the room where I will have the online interview have a stable and secure internet connection?

Use the STAR method

During the interview we'll make notes of your answers. To ensure that we accurately pen down your talent and achievements, we'd recommend you to use the STAR method.

  • situation – sketch us a situation you found yourself in
  • task – tell us what you had to do to resolve the situation
  • action – tell us how you resolved your task (if this also allows you to flex your talents or highlight how you went above-and-beyond to fix the task, go for it)
  • result – what was the outcome of you completing the task (and was it better than what anyone expected)

Ask your own questions

At the end of each interview, we'll give you the opportunity to ask us about VisitScotland.

We would suggest you'd come prepared with some questions for the hiring panel, even if you think you may already know the answers to them. By asking us these questions, you can namely show your understanding of the role or highlight your enthusiasm about working for us. For example:

  • asking about career opportunities, highlights your ambition (one of our values)
  • asking about or suggesting available learning or tools, could highlight that you're innovative (also one of our values)
  • asking us about something you read in researching us, could show us the depth of your enthusiasm in working for us

Questions? We're here to help!

Choosing a career that's right for you can be one of the most important decisions of your life. We want to help you as best as we can by answering any of your questions about our vacancies, career opportunities, benefits, and more.

Although during the winter it may required more time, in Edinburgh you will always find a job within the hospitality sector. Kitchen porter, chef, waiting staff, bar attendant and house keeper, are the most popular jobs in this city because of the huge number of pubs, bar and restaurants. Besides, Edinburgh is famous for the several festivals and events which take place all the year round such as Hogmanay and the Fringe. Many of them hire young people with no experience and train them. Of course the salary is not the best but these kind of jobs are quite useful for your cv because of the interaction with public.
