Where to stay in Melbourne

Whether you are looking for a buzzing city hotel or a discrete neighbourhood hideaway, Melbourne’s best hotels have you covered.

By Ute Junker

With so many tempting options to choose from, selecting a hotel in  Melbourne  can be a challenge. Do you opt for a hotel in a leafy backstreet in a happening neighbourhood, or one that is close to the city’s ever-lively laneways? Do you choose a hotel with fantastic in-house restaurants, or one with a buzzing rooftop bar? Do you go for cutting-edge interiors, or picture-perfect views? Whichever one of these inviting hotels you pick, you are guaranteed a memorable stay.

QT Melbourne

Rooftop QT BAR, Melbourne, VIC © Tourism Australia

Sipping cocktails or local wines from a rooftop bar is the quintessential Melbourne experience, so take the lift to the 11th floor and make an evening of it at The Rooftop at QT.

Where:  133 Russell Street, Melbourne

A winning combination of quirky design and playful approach has made  QT Hotels  Australia’s favourite boutique hotel group, and the Melbourne outpost is one of the best. In addition to the typical QT touches that regulars have come to love – from striking art installations to lifts that flirt with guests as they are transported to their rooms – the rooms are full of clever design details, such as graffiti-inspired rugs and Japanese-style sliding doors that let you close off the open bathroom for privacy. The rooftop bar and the fabulous in-house restaurant, Pascale, are as popular with locals as with guests.

The Lyall Hotel and Spa

The Lyall Hotel and Spa, Melbourne, VIC © Lyall Hotel and Spa

The Lyall Hotel and Spa, Melbourne, Victoria © Lyall Hotel and Spa

Where:  16 Murphy Street, South Yarra

Understated elegance is the name of the game at  Lyall Hotel and Spa , an intimate property which nonetheless offers all the services you would expect from a grand hotel, right down to a three-level spa. In fact, the Lyall is so inviting that, despite its close proximity to the shops and restaurants of Chapel Street and Toorak Road, you may decide to treat yourself to a night in. Start the evening with a drink in the Champagne bar, or perhaps on your private terrace, before settling in with a movie chosen from the extensive library. There’s no rush about ordering dinner, either – room service is available 24 hours a day.

Crown Towers Melbourne

Koorie Heritage Trust, Melbourne, Victoria © Visit Victoria

Unmissable experience

Join a guide from the Koorie Heritage Trust  on a walk to the Birrarung Wilam (Common Ground) Aboriginal art installations. You will learn how the land has changed over time and its significance to the local Kulin peoples.

Where:  8 Whiteman Street, Southbank

For big-city glamour,  Crown Towers Melbourne  remains the property to beat. Its luxurious rooms tick all the boxes with their front-and-centre views of the city and the river, their sink-into beds and their oversized bathrooms. Arguably the hotel’s biggest attraction, however, is the extraordinary array of restaurants located within the Crown complex, helmed by top chefs such as Neil Perry, Guillaume Brahimi and Nobuyuki Matsuhisa. Throw in an indulgent spa, and there are plenty of reasons to stay put. If you do decide to head out, however, the city centre is an easy stroll away.

The Olsen, South Yarra, VIC © The Olsen

The Olsen, South Yarra, Victoria © The Olsen

Where:  637-641 Chapel Street, South Yarra

For anyone interested in Australian art,  The Olsen  and any of its sister hotels in the  Art Series  collection, offer a unique opportunity to wake up with some of the country’s best loved artists or, at least, with their works. The Olsen, located amid the cafés and boutiques of fashionable Chapel Street, showcases the works of landscape artist John Olsen, celebrated for his fluid lines and wash of colour. In addition to the mural in the lobby, each room includes a museum-quality Olsen print. Best of all, Olsen himself stays at the hotel whenever he visits  Melbourne , so you may even bump into him at breakfast.

Ovolo Laneways

Ovolo Laneways, Melbourne, VIC © Ovolo Hotels

Ovolo Laneways, Melbourne, Victoria © Ovolo Hotels

Where:  19 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne

Most hotels know their clientele, pitching themselves either at the business traveller or the holiday crowd. At  Ovolo Laneways , they like a bit of both. The central city location and the apartment-style rooms are designed to attract business trippers, but the playful design touches – including the silver spheres scattered across the lobby – will appeal to holidaymakers, too. Ovolo’s no-frills approach means that there are no hot breakfasts and no swimming pool, but most guests agree that the free mini-bar more than makes up for it.

The Prince Hotel

The Prince, St Kilda, VIC © The Prince

The Prince Hotel, St Kilda, Victoria © The Prince Hotel

Where:  2 Acland Street, St Kilda

“Effortlessly hip” is the best way to describe this quirky boutique bolthole in the seaside  Melbourne suburb  of St Kilda. It's home to one of the best spas in the city, the indulgent  Aurora Spa , and also offers a stunning restaurant, more casual bar venue and a live music venue. The airy rooms, all white walls and dark timber, are lovely rather than lavish, but with the many delights of  St Kilda  so close, you aren’t going to be spending a lot of time in your room. However, we do recommend a visit to the hotel’s seriously stylish pool area, known as The Deck.

Top rooftop bars in Melbourne

Where:  187 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

Yes, the  Adelphi  is a dessert-themed hotel, but no, it’s not as kooky as it sounds. In fact, this inner-city hotel will please design fans as well as those with a sweet tooth, with its velvety chocolate decor and its stools inspired by colourful liquorice allsorts, teamed with geometric carpets and brushed steel bathrooms. The in-house dessert bar,  Om Nom , is justly famous, but there are a lot of other reasons to stay at the Adelphi, from the generously sized rooms to free mini-bar. Oh, it also has the most famous rooftop pool in town.

W MELBOURNE

Interior shot of the W Melbourne in Victoria © W Hotels

W Melbourne, Victoria © W Hotels

Where: 408 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

Drawing inspiration from the streets of Melbourne, W Melbourne is as stylish and edgy as the city it’s in. Situated on trendy Flinders Lane, the laneway’s eclectic style extends inside with one-of-a-kind design elements that weave art, fashion and music to reflect Melbourne’s vibrant culture and history. Each of the nearly 300 guestrooms and 29 suites feature a bold look and feel, with luxurious marble bathrooms, and floor-to-ceiling windows affording sprawling skyline views. Don’t miss a dip in the glamorous gold-roofed indoor pool, complete with poolside bar and DJ.

Hotel Chadstone Melbourne

Hotel Chadstone Melbourne - MGallery by Sofitel Arrow

Located about 10 miles from Melbourne's CBD, Chadstone is the largest mall in the Southern Hemisphere. The new-build Chadstone Hotel—part of Sofitel's MGallery collection—is advertised as an ideal choice for Australian shopaholics, but overseas visitors will also be tempted by the property's luxe trimmings. The vaguely Art Deco rooms lull guests into a post-shopping stupor; think, plush Sofitel MyBeds, dusty-pink headboards, extra-deep soaking tubs, and near-uncanny soundproofing.

The Cullen Arrow

The late, great artist Adam Cullen courted controversy and wasn't afraid to splash bold colors. Fitting, then, that the Art Series hotel named in his honor is one of the funkiest in the collection. It's located in cosmopolitan Prahran, about 20 minutes from the city center. Black carpets and white walls in the guest rooms put the focus squarely on the arresting Cullen wall prints, while large mirrors create a sense of spaciousness. All rooms include kitchenettes—useful if you're planning to visit Prahran Market across the road. Mind-boggling art, two fun restaurants, and an un-touristy location give The Cullen an undeniable cool factor.

Element Melbourne Richmond

Element Melbourne Richmond Arrow

Marriott chose a tucked-away location, east of central Melbourne on the Yarra River, for its first Element hotel in Australia. The property is quiet, without much buzz, but its charming lobby-lounge, featuring deep armchairs and a fireplace, is a truly pleasant spot. What the guest rooms lack in character they make up for in natural light, which pours in through floor-to-ceiling windows. Those recovering from jet-lag will appreciate the excellent soundproofing, cozy beds, and comfy sofas.

Zagames House Melbourne

Zagame’s House Arrow

Once a scruffy motel, Zagame's House has been reborn as a character-filled boutique property that expertly mixes creature comforts and urban vibes. Straddling the border of the city center and Little Italy, the art-strewn hotel attracts an in-the-know crowd that appreciates smart design. The sleek guest rooms—furnished with marble, dark woods, and brass fixtures—feel like they belong to a much more expensive hotel. Hi-tech touches elevate a stay here; aside from brand-new Samsung flat screens and Muk hair dryers, there are bathroom mirrors with multiple light settings, plus sensor-operated minibars.

Melbourne Australia The Lyall Hotel and Spa

Lyall Hotel and Spa Arrow

Although it's no longer the only independent five-star hotel in Melbourne, The Lyall remains the property by which all other boutiques are judged. This discreet haven in moneyed South Yarra continues to impress with its plush rooms, personalized service, and superlative spa. The clientele ranges from international celebrities to prominent Australians visiting Melbourne from other parts of the country and the odd staycationer. Even the entry-level options at this all-suite hotel feel generously proportioned, with proper living/lounge areas, large bathrooms with tubs, and well-stocked kitchenettes for those planning to stay a while.

Melbourne Australia United Place

United Places Botanic Gardens Arrow

Among Australian cities, Melbourne rules the design and foodie game. But until now it has fallen shamefully short on the hotel front and developer Darren Rubenstein knew it. When asked advice by a friend on where to stay in his hometown, he was completely uninspired. So he decided to become a hotelier and sort it out himself. The result is a gift to his friend and anyone planning to visit Melbourne. Rubenstein enlisted architect Sue Carr to create a four-story, glass-and-concrete new-build opposite Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens in the upscale suburb of South Yarra, just 10 minutes from the city center. Of the 12 smart yet understated rooms, those in moss-green tones have views of the gardens; the others, in shades of dusky pink, overlook the neighborhood. Every detail here is carefully considered and in line with the taste level expected in this style-driven city. There are expansive balconies for relaxing with a dram of Sullivans Cove whisky, distilled in Tasmania, and a Patricia Urquiola Redondo sofa to curl up on in the living area. There’s no lobby, just a discreet entrance, and the shadows of a custom-made Laura Woodward kinetic sculpture draw you towards the lift to your room. Each morning, a seasonal breakfast (yogurt with berries and dark chocolate) is delivered at a time that suits.

Melbourne Australia Ovolo Laneways

Ovolo Laneways Arrow

Affordable-luxe hotels have been slow to catch on in Australia, but Ovolo Laneways, a centrally located boutique, does the "everything you need, nothing you don't" thing just as well as its Northern-Hemisphere peers. Ovolo is well-known for its freebies, which include minibar snacks such as cookies and chips; a light "grab 'n' go" breakfast; Wi-Fi; Apple TV, and a lobby Happy Hour. The standard Studio rooms are light and bright, with curved windows that make them seem much bigger than they are. Then there are the suites, which get progressively louder as they increase in size. The Penthouse Suite is a riotous mix of bright colors and holiday toys, including a pinball machine, a hot tub on the terrace, and a candy buffet.

Melbourne Australia Notel Melbourne

Notel Arrow

Melbourne's love of rooftop revelry and its allegiance to vintage Americana have spawned Notel: a collection of six 1970s Airstream trailers on a downtown roof overlooking Flinders Lane. Yes, it's gimmicky—but it's also undeniably fun. The roominess of the trailers may surprise you—there's ample space for two people plus luggage, and the bathroom has a decent shower with strong water pressure. The pink-and-grey color scheme channels a bygone era. Most pleasing, the door and windows block out a lot of city noise.

Melbourne Australia The Olsen

The Olsen Arrow

This member of the hugely popular Art Series Hotels group pays homage to Australian painting titan John Olsen, whose distinctive work adorns every available bit of wall space. Lush amenities and an upmarket South Yarra location make it one of the city's most tempting boutique picks. The champagne-and-silver palette in the guest rooms is a welcome counterpoint to Olsen's bright and bold work, and the signature Art Series beds are just the right kind of squishy.

Default

Coppersmith Hotel Arrow

This 15-room property is a pleasing counterpoint to the grande dame hotels that dominate central Melbourne: it's compact, characterful (the historic building was once a pub), and resolutely low key. Coppersmith has an enduring cult following. This 18th-century building underwent a gut renovation before it became a hotel—as a result, the guest rooms are sleek and modern while retaining some historic flavor. The hotel's bistro and adjoining bar are places you'll want to linger. Well thought-out French-accented food and classy craft beers are the highlights, and there's also a surprisingly deep wine cellar. The non-touristy South Melbourne location—about 10 minutes from the city center—makes Coppersmith feel like a well-maintained locals-only secret.

The Langham Melbourne

The Langham, Melbourne Arrow

This grande dame is located riverside in the Southbank precinct, just a few minutes' walk from the city center. Visitors are drawn in by its old-fashioned opulence, which channels the great hotels of London and New York . The Yarra River and Melbourne skyline views are impressive, especially from rooms with terraces or balconies, and even The Langham's most modest guest rooms feature marble bathrooms with generous tubs. The Chuan Spa is best known for its traditional Chinese massages, but the facials, scrubs and wraps—some of which use marine algae from Thalgo—are top notch, too.

Melbourne Australia Park Hyatt Melbourne

Park Hyatt Melbourne Arrow

The smaller of Melbourne's two inner-city Hyatts also boasts more serene surrounds (it does, indeed, abut a park) and more generous guest rooms, plus the brand's usual upmarket touches. A standard guest room is a cavernous 48 square meters (517 square feet)—purportedly the city's largest entry-level room—and is as well-appointed as many suites elsewhere. Marble bathtubs, Le Labo toiletries, and walk-in closets create a sense of indulgence that's rare in Australian hotels. The health club and spa are surprisingly little used, probably because most guests are here on business. Check out the heated indoor pool and steam room, then surrender to the spa's signature coconut body treatment.

Melbourne Australia The Como Melbourne MGallery by Sofitel

The Como Melbourne MGallery by Sofitel Arrow

When this indie favorite on bustling Chapel Street started to lose its luster in the 2000s, Sofitel swept in and undertook a comprehensive revamp. The place now runs more efficiently than it ever did, while retaining the glam that has long attracted A-listers and celebrities of all descriptions (think Bruce Springsteen and David Beckham). The heated pool on the top floor is beautiful and little used. Of the three penthouses, the Pearl is our pick: it mimics the soft white palette of the rooms downstairs, unlike its two siblings. The Como has retained plenty of personality since becoming part of the Sofitel collection—there's a signature Como rubber ducky in each bathroom, and Evian in the fridge. Chapel Street is teeming with buzzy bars and acclaimed eateries, which may be why The Como has no restaurant of its own. Instead, there's a breakfast brasserie and a bar, both of which perform well. Room service is 24/7 and very popular with guests.

Melbourne Australia QT Melbourne

QT Melbourne Arrow

This hugely popular boutique hotel in a former cinema offers sensory overload via neon sculptures, flashing screens, and talking elevators (really). But the generous, well-equipped guest rooms are surprisingly quiet, making the QT a good spot for downtime, too. The QT Melbourne feels like a traditional boutique hotel that's been hit by millions of volts of electricity. It's got character, it's lively, and located close to the best of the city center.

Melbourne Australia Adelphi Hotel

Adelphi Hotel Arrow

This small property's fashionable laneway location, boldly decorated guest rooms, and cantilevered rooftop pool help create a buzzy atmosphere that's rare among Melbourne hotels. And a dessert-themed restaurant? Genius. Clientele tend to be young creatives visiting from Sydney , and international travelers who want to be close to the action. Some of the city’s best eating spots—including Supernormal and Kisumé—are just meters away.

FAQs about hotels in Melbourne

How much does it cost to stay in a hotel in melbourne, how much is a hotel in melbourne for this weekend, how much is a hotel in melbourne for tonight, which hotels in melbourne are good for families, what are the best hotels in melbourne near crown casino melbourne, what are the best hotels in melbourne near melbourne airport, what are the best hotels to stay in melbourne, what hotels in melbourne offer an especially good breakfast, what hotels in melbourne are good for couples, what hotels in melbourne have nice views, buzzy jewel of aussie rules.

A thoroughly liveable city, Melbourne has a buzzy vibe and an Aussie sense of fun. There’s always something going on, and one of its many festivals is Moomba – Australia’s largest free arts festival. Well worth a visit are the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Aquarium, whose highlight is walking through a clear tunnel as sharks swim over your head.

The city’s most recognisable landmark is Flinders Street Station, whose yellow and green façade matches the colour of the historic Melbourne trams that still run around the world’s longest tram network. Keep an eye out for the street art as you travel.

Shopping in Melbourne is fantastic. Queen Victoria Market is the largest open-air market south of the Equator, while the La Trobe Street shopping centre has over 300 stores. For food, don’t miss Little Italy - the Carlton area.

South of the Yarra River is St Kilda, home to the best beach and Albert Park, where the F1 Australian Grand Prix is held. However, this is not the city’s only sporting heritage. It’s also the home of Aussie Rules football and the MCG, a must-see for cricket fans.

Best Melbourne hotels

1.  w melbourne.

W Melbourne

For a taste of inner-city luxury, you can’t go past W Melbourne. The hotel, which opened in February of 2021, packs 294 guest rooms, 29 suites, a secret bar, a premium restaurant and a sexy top-floor pool into its Flinders Lane digs – and still manages to feel boutique rather than behemoth.

Time Out tip: Head to the indoor pool before 7am for a solo swim, and you might even see hot air balloons pass by the windows.

2.  Sofitel Melbourne

  • Luxury hotels
  • price 3 of 4

Sofitel Melbourne

With beautiful rooms and intuitive service delivered by attentive staff, this five-star hotel has all the high-end trappings you’d expect from digs sandwiched between Wolford, Armani and Prada.  Here you’re literally on top of the high-end shopping and fine dining restaurants at the “Paris end” of Collins Street. Guests can expect panoramic city views from floor-to-ceiling windows, modern furnishings and king-sized beds. Cap off your experience by lording over the city with a Martini in the Atrium Bar on the 35th floor.

Time Out tip: Spend an afternoon snacking on delicate éclairs in Sofi’s Lounge .

3.  QT Melbourne

QT Melbourne

Opened in 2016, the QT Melbourne has made quite a splash in the city – its 188 rooms can be hard to come by, so if you’ve got your heart set on staying, book in advance. The brand new building has a grand entrance – all soaring ceilings, wood panels and marble. You’ll find a large selection of mostly digital art flickering throughout the hotel, and rooms have an orient-meets-Wall Street vibe, with timber floorboards, glamorous en suites and QT’s “please-don’t-make-me-get-up-I-don’t-want-to-get-up” gel-topped beds.

Time Out tip: The QT is directly opposite one of Time Out’s favourite restaurants and wine bars, Embla . Don’t leave town without nabbing a table.

4.  Mövenpick Hotel Melbourne

Mövenpick Hotel Melbourne

Australia’s second-ever Mövenpick Hotel has landed in the Melbourne CBD, and it comes with heaps of perks that will ensure your stay is chock full of delights from start to finish. It’s conveniently located just across the street from Southern Cross Station, making it the perfect stay for those keen on exploring the city and beyond.

Time Out tip: While the free chocolate hour is only for hotel guests, if you’re in the area you can still rock up to purchase that indulgent Mövenpick ice cream parfait. It’s $20 and the perfect size for two people, or one especially ambitious chocolate-lover.

5.  The Langham

The Langham

This Southbank mainstay has all the essential ingredients needed to conjure up an extraordinary hotel experience. There are incredible city skyline and Yarra River views from the Deluxe River Corner Room, the polished interiors of the sprawling Chairman Suite and the indoor 15-metre pool inside the Langham’s blissful Chuan Spa. Cap that off with a visit to the award-winning buffet at the Melba fine dining restaurant and it’s easy to see how the Langham earned every single one of its five stars.

Time Out tip: Tea sommeliers are most definitely a thing – and you’ll meet them at the Langham’s elegant high tea, where house-made pastries are served on Wedgewood teaware.

6.  Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands

Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands

For the first time in more than two decades, a brand new Marriott Hotel has been built in Australia, and it is absolutely grand. Your timeline has probably been graced with pictures of its heated wet-edge infinity pool, located 15 floors up and boasting sweeping views of the city. Seeing that has probably already whet your appetite for a stay at this five-star hotel, but there are heaps more amenities to look forward to.

Time Out tip:  Want the infinity pool to yourself? Plan to get there sometime between when it first opens at 6am until peak hour starts at around 9am. If the idea of getting into a chilled pool in the cold early hours of the morning sounds awful, don't worry: it's heated, and there's a jacuzzi section off to the site where you can warm yourself up.

7.  Art Series - The Olsen

  • Boutique hotels
  • South Yarra
  • price 2 of 4

Art Series - The Olsen

The Art Series Hotel Group’s South Yarra offering has 224 luxurious rooms ideal for short and long term stays. Stepping to the lobby feels more like entering an art gallery than a hotel; a striking frog sculpture (by veteran Australian artist John Olsen, of course) sets the scene, and a curated collection of Olsen’s bright and beautiful paintings are dotted throughout the property.

Time Out tip: Feel like watching a movie? Resist the urge to stay in and head across the road to Palace Cinema Como . This plush cinema complex screens big new releases as well as arthouse films from all over the world.

8.  Hotel Windsor

Hotel Windsor

Dripping in old-world charm and the glamour of a bygone era, this grand dame is really something special. The décor here is understated and refined, with tasteful furnishings, soaring ceilings and pretty leadlight accents rather than the cold and tacky flashiness of some 'luxury' hotels. The staff are warm and attentive, happy to help with everything from nearby bar recommendations to forgotten toothbrushes. The rooms themselves are elegant, with marble bathrooms and soft linens and towels.

Time Out tip:  Even if you don't want to stay at the Windsor, do make sure you drop in for afternoon tea, which is served every day of the week.

9.  Adelphi Hotel

Adelphi Hotel

Located within a hulking 1938 building on the busy CBD hotspot that is Flinders Lane, the Adelphi Hotel is a nice landing spot for those who value edgy design, location and first-rate service.  The Adelphi is a uniquely styled boutique hotel, from its signature zig-zagged floor right down to the ubiquitous lolly jars in every room.  With only 34 rooms, the Adelphi can afford to be a little playful in design. Kitschy lamps, furry rugs and not-very-functional-but-still-cute couches line the corners of rooms, with the centrepiece king-sized bed a comfy standout.

Time Out tip:  The Adelphi’s rooftop pool is probably one of the most photographed pools in Melbourne, thanks to its cantilevering, glass-bottom, which juts out over Flinders Lane. It's open from 6am most days if you're one for an early-morning swim.

10.  The Alto Hotel

The Alto Hotel

As Australia’s first carbon neutral hotel, the inner-city Alto Hotel is the ideal place for a low-impact city stay. Not only is 100 per cent of all electricity used throughout the property generated from renewable sources, but guests can access complimentary recharging stations for electric vehicles and there’s even a rooftop beehive supplying honey for breakfast. With simple yet stylish rooms and all the mod-cons you’d expect from a four-star boutique hotel, the Alto Hotel proves that going green doesn’t mean sacrificing on quality.

Time Out tip: Take advantage of Alto’s relaxation room, which features automated massage chairs that are free to use.

11.  Ovolo South Yarra

Ovolo South Yarra

Everything about Ovolo’s South Yarra outpost is perfectly suited to its Chapel Street adjacent location. No detail has been overlooked in accomplishing the hotel’s groovy, 1960s-70s aesthetic. Make note of restaurant Lona Misa on your way to check in, as it’s here you can grab a plant-based breakfast, lunch or dinner while staying at the hotel.

Time Out tip:  Have a canine friend in the family? Ovolo is completely pet-friendly and will even provide a bed, dog bowls and treats for your dog.

12.  Crown Metropol

Crown Metropol

This sleek urban sanctuary offers all guests the VIP treatment. You can choose between upscale rooms, lofts and apartments all at different price points – but it’s the world-class facilities that set Crown Metropol apart. Zoning out in the infinity pool on the 27th floor is a must, as is enjoying a cocktail or two at the 28 Skybar Lounge, which boasts sweeping city views.

Time Out tip:  Take advantage of the hotel's prime location within the thick of Southbank and peruse the many restaurants that look out over the Yarra River.

13.  Coppersmith Hotel

  • South Melbourne

Coppersmith Hotel

Design aficionados will love the muted tones and sleek monochrome lines at this South Melbourne boutique bolthole that is equal parts hotel, bar and bistro. Only a quick tram ride from the city centre, Coppersmith – located in the leafy streets of South Melbourne – is the perfect choice for visitors who prefer a neighbourhood setting to be in the middle of the city. The rooms feature incredibly soft beds, heavenly pillows, flat-screen televisions and recordable cable TV. Enjoying a cool beer on the rooftop is a must.

Time Out tip: Coppersmith is a five-minute walk to Albert Park Lake, an expansive blue lake flanked with a five-kilometre walking track. Take a stroll as the sun sets over the city and spot the black swans sitting on the banks. Just don’t swim in it.

14.  Voco Melbourne Central

Voco Melbourne Central

"As good as it looks". You know what you're in for when you stay at this place; stunning views, cosy modern vibes, and a range of amenities that we know you'll dig heaps. For starters, there's the rooftop plunge pool offering whopping skyline views, the bar and grill – a prime spot for dinner – that serves up fire-cooked steaks and exceptional wine, along with a gym for the night owls and early risers alike who like a little endorphin kick.  Pretty good, hey? A lively atmosphere, coupled with a central location means an all-round exceptional stay in our books. If that doesn't sway you, the in-the-sky lobby probably ought to do the trick.

Time Out tip:  We've all been doing the self-care thing wrong.  If you really want to indulge, we recommend the High Floor for next-level views while you're soaking in the tub.

15.  Quincy Hotel Melbourne

Quincy Hotel Melbourne

Situated in the heart of the city on Flinders Lane, guests come here for the vibes, without a doubt. This incredible 29-story hotel knows how to turn heads with its Instagramable room decor comprised of contemporary decor and vibrant, eye-catching colour schemes that put you in a sunny mood if that's even a thing (we guess it is now)! The bells and whistles continue at the indoor rooftop pool offering fabulous views as you lap up your calming surroundings. On top of this Quincy serves all-day refreshments to help you refuel in between sightseeing and shopping, laundry services, a bar lounge and an energetic dining experience at the on-site restaurant.

Time Out tip: Soak up the Hosier Lane vibes even more at Tres A Cinco, a Mexican cocktail bar and by far one of the best spots for a marg in Melbourne.

Where to stay in Melbourne

I’ve put together this list of the best places to stay in Melbourne to help you make the most of your trip.

Written by Michael Turtle

Michael Turtle is the founder of Travel Australia Today. He has been a journalist for more than 20 years and loves exploring different parts of Australia.

Michael Turtle is the founder of Travel Australia Today and has been a journalist for 20 years.

I've got lots of details below - so you can also jump straight down to my top tips on where to stay in Melbourne:

City centre

South yarra.

It seems like every time I go to Melbourne (which is quite often), there are cool new hotels opening.

Opulent new five star skyscrapers in the city centre, renovated heritage buildings becoming boutique accommodation, or cool apartments in local neighbourhoods – there’s always something new to try.

The same can be said about the different neighbourhoods in Melbourne too, because although there are a few obvious areas to stay in Melbourne, there are plenty of other spots to experience as well.

The city centre (and surrounding districts like Southbank or Docklands) is the obvious choice for where to stay in Melbourne for many travellers, with plenty to do and great restaurants and transport.

But don’t forget that Melbourne is famous for its quirky suburbs, so you might want to base yourself in one of them if you’re going to be here a bit longer.

Regardless of where you choose, you’re going to find some world-class hotels and some really funky artistic options too.

The public transport system is really good, so any of the places to stay in Melbourne that I’m going to recommend are well-connected to the main centres.

But you’ll definitely find different vibes in these various neighbourhoods, which is something you may want to consider, particularly if you’re going to be here for more than a night or two.

  • City centre: The best area to stay in Melbourne for first-time visitors, with easy access to attractions and transport.
  • Southbank: Another good area for first-time visitors, although there’s less variety and more high-end accommodation.
  • Docklands: With lots of modern apartments, but with easy access to the city centre, this can be good for longer stays, groups, or business trips.
  • Fitzroy (and Collingwood): These cool inner-city suburbs put you right amongst fantastic bars, restaurants, and street art.
  • South Yarra: A stylish part of the city that has more upmarket shops and cafes, with some cool boutique hotels.
  • St Kilda: Right on the beach, it’s about 20 minutes from the city centre but has great dining, fun live music, and a good variety of backpacker options.
  • Brunswick: An excellent choice to feel like a local in a residential neighbourhood, especially one with a vibrant multicultural atmosphere.

Before I run you through the details of where to stay in Melbourne, have a look at this map so you can see how they all fit together.

The central areas will be your best option if you want a typical tourist experience, but the further out you go, the more you’ll find interesting neighbourhoods with more of a local feel.

To help plan your visit, you might be interested in my ideas for the best things to do in Melbourne .

So, with all of that said, let’s have a look in detail at my top tips for the best accommodation in Melbourne.

For first-time visitors, I think there’s no better area to stay in Melbourne than the city centre. Unlike some of Australia’s other state capitals, Melbourne’s CBD is about much more than business, with lots of residential and cultural zones here too.

Staying in Melbourne’s city centre gives you the best transport connections to a variety of suburbs (including on the world’s largest tram network), which are well worth exploring to discovering why Melbourne is rated among the world’s most liveable cities.

But you’ll spend plenty of time seeing the sights in Melbourne’s city centre, seeing sights like Parliament House, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Flagstaff Gardens, Queen Victoria Market, and Federation Square.

Some of the best hotels in Melbourne are here in the CBD, but there’s also a really interesting range of accommodation and, regardless of your budget and taste, you’ll likely find something here that suits your style.

visit melbourne hotels

With a quieter atmosphere,  Europa Melbourne  has privacy curtains in the dorm rooms and great value in the city centre.

  • Space Hotel:  A very cool hotel with a more social vibe, plus a spacious kitchen and great view from the rooftop.
  • Flinders Backpackers:  The hostel has a cute homely atmosphere with helpful staff and a colourful design.

If you’re travelling around the country to more places than just Melbourne, you may be interested in my list of the best hostels in Australia .

visit melbourne hotels

I think the  Victoria Hotel  is much nicer than anything else you’ll find at this price, with good rooms in a perfect location.

  • Best Western Queen Victoria Market Hotel:  Although the rooms are fairly basic, it’s modern and offers a good place to crash for a night or two.
  • Hotel Collins:  The large comfortable rooms and convenient location make this great value for money.

visit melbourne hotels

From the cool rooftop bar to the funky lobby, the  QT Melbourne  exudes contemporary elegance.

  • W Melbourne:  A relatively new hotel that has funky rooms and a young vibe, with a very cool indoor pool area.
  • Le Meridien:  Set in an old theatre with an art deco facade, this new hotel blends aspects of Melbourne’s theatre district with the French style of the accommodation brand.

visit melbourne hotels

With everything you would expect from the luxury experts, The Ritz-Carlton is one of Melbourne’s best, set on the 80th floor!

  • Next Hotel Melbourne:  Without being too flashy, everything here has been well considered, with an emphasis on comfort.
  • Park Hyatt:  Although it’s still fresh and new, there’s a more traditional feel to the decor in a quiet location right on the edge of the city centre.

The Yarra River courses through the heart of Melbourne with the city centre on one side and Southbank on the other.

Although it’s just metres away from central Melbourne, Southbank feels really different. It’s a modern and ritzy part of the city, with high-end accommodation that focuses on the area’s world-class entertainment and dining district, particularly Crown Casino.

But at some times of the day, it’s also one of the most relaxing parts of the city. While the northern side of the river is primarily covered with train lines and frequented by office workers, over here you’re right next to the Yarra and an early morning stroll from your accomodation brings the splashing of the oars as rowboats cruise past while the city begin to wake.

This is a great part of Melbourne to stay in if your focus is going to be on arts and culture, with some of the city’s best restaurants just a short stroll from the Arts Centre and National Gallery of Victoria. But there’s also easy access to other neighbourhoods, so you might want to choose to stay in Southbank just for the beautiful hotels.

visit melbourne hotels

There isn’t much budget accommodation here, but the Mercure Melbourne Southbank is one of the cheapest.

  • Imagine on Southbank:  Another option that is not cheap but is one of Southbank’s more affordable hotels and is actually quite cool.
  • Holiday Inn Express Melbourne Southbank:  Clean, comfortable, and modern, you’ll also get a free breakfast here.

visit melbourne hotels

If you’re looking for a bit more space, Exclusive Stays – Yarra Condos has two bedrooms and lots of facilities.

  • Bright Urban Oasis:  If you just need one bedroom, this cute little apartment is good for longer stays.
  • Exclusive Stays – SouthbankONE:  Great views across the area and three bedrooms sleep a maximum of eight guests.

visit melbourne hotels

Part of Southbank’s main entertainment venue, Crown Metropol Melbourne brings a cooler vibe to the luxury accommodation.

  • Ink Hotel Melbourne Southbank:  Lots of small touches make this a funky hotel that’s quite good value.
  • Adelphi Hotel:  Although it’s just across the river from Southbank, it’s close enough to the neighbourhood and is so cool it’s worth considering.

visit melbourne hotels

One of the most iconic hotels in Melbourne,  Crown Towers  puts you in the centre of this vast entertainment complex.

  • The Langham:  The classic elegance you’ve come to expect is on full display at this beautiful riverside location.
  • Quay West Suites:  A great option if you want a five-star accommodation but with suites that offer self-contained kitchenette facilities.

If you haven’t been to Melbourne for a decade or two, you probably wouldn’t recognise Docklands.

The neighbourhood has seen rapid development over the last two decades, transforming from a disregarded barren collection of ship docks into a jungle of skyscrapers full of modern apartments.

For travellers, that means it’s an area full of larger serviced accommodations with facilities like full kitchens.

Docklands is one of the best places to stay in Melbourne for families or groups. You still have decent public transport access to the city centre and other neighbourhoods, yet it can feel like its own little world.

Despite its modern feel, Docklands is much quieter than the neighbouring CBD and Southbank. But there are things to do here like Docklands Park for the little ones, or it’s not far to some of the city’s main attractions.

visit melbourne hotels

Although nothing is cheap in Docklands, you’ll get decent value at the Four Points by Sheraton , a lovely hotel with good views.

  • Peppers Docklands:  The beds are comfortable, the location is convenient with public transport, and there’s even a small pool.
  • Travelodge Hotel Melbourne Docklands:  You’ll see the modern design as soon as you enter the building and, while the rooms have a fairly standard interior, they’re really clean and comfortable.

visit melbourne hotels

There are plenty of apartments in Docklands, but  this two-bedroom waterfront  has lots of space and beautiful views.

  • Melbourne Holiday Apartments Flinders Wharf:  Located at the banks of Yarra River, this fully furnished apartment has access to an indoor pool and offers plenty of other amenities.
  • Nesuto Docklands:  Clean and modern with ample space, this apartment is very close to shops and restaurants.

The warm hospitality is just one selling-point of  Quest NewQuay , which is also well located and has great views across the neighbourhood.

  • Docklands Private Collection – Digital Harbour:  The bright stylish room offers unmatched city and river views from the balcony, with easy tram access right out the front door.
  • Waterfront Melbourne Apartments:  There’s history here, with the property being a hotel since the 1800s, but don’t worry, the interior’s had a modern makeover and the rooftop bar is fabulous.

Sleek and stylish,  Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands  has huge comfortable beds, great service, and phenomenal views.

  • Winston Apartments Docklands:  These modern and well-equipped apartments are a perfect base in Docklands, and also have an indoor pool and amazing view.
  • Spectacular Victoria Harbour Apartment Docklands:  Or for a bit more space, this private three-bedroom apartment has lots of light with luxurious fittings.

Outside of the central neighbourhoods I’ve already mentioned are some fantastic inner-city suburbs that offer the cultural eccentricity that Melbourne is famous for.

It may not have as many big landmarks as Sydney, but the communities are a highlight here, and I think Fitzroy (and neighbouring Collingwood) is one of the best places to stay in Melbourne to see this for yourself.

Skyscrapers are replaced by double-wide streets with tram tracks running through. These roads are flanked by two-story shophouses, the bottom floor a restaurant, cafe or thrift shop, and the top floor of an early 20th century apartment.

The facades of these buildings have changed little over the last 100 years. Yet what lies within them explores the neighbourhood’s artistic, trendy and hipster side.

Foodies will love staying in Fitzroy – but there’s more here than just restaurants. There are cool cafes, street art, and a friendly youthful nightlife that combines students and young professionals.

Fitzroy is really close to the city centre and there’s great transport, but because it’s residential, you’ll also find more apartments and houses here, so it can be good for groups or longer stays.

Set in a historic property with a boutique feel,  The Nunnery  is one of Melbourne’s most interesting backpacker options.

  • Royal Derby Hotel:  Good for short stays, with clean and comfortable accommodation in a funky neighbourhood.

Although it’s got a really cool design, the rooms at  lyf Collingwood  are quite small, which helps keep the price down.

  • Melbourne Metropole Central:  The rooms are relatively simple but they’ve got everything you need and it’s a great location.
  • Veriu Collingwood:  A lovely modern hotel that even has an outdoor pool and often offers affordable rates during the week.

Clean, comfortable, and minimalist with great views,  Tyrian Serviced Apartments  is also really quiet despite its location in a busy area.

  • Comfort Apartme nts Royal Gardens:  There’s a peaceful garden setting with an outdoor pool and barbecue area, plus easy access to the city centre.
  • District Apartments Fitzroy:  Clean and tidy, the apartments are spacious with modern interiors and a nice view across the neighbourhood.

For a bit more space, this  Modern Haven  has two bedrooms in a relaxing and well-decorated house.

  • Spacious Converted Home:  Housed in an old heritage building with modern design, a very homey atmosphere, ideal location, and great hosts.
  • The Eversley:  A home away from home, there are lovely soft tones in the modern design, with a gorgeous garden to hang out in.

If Fitzroy is young, hip and colourful, then South Yarra is simply glam. Alongside Toorak, the stylish suburb has long been the stomping ground of the city’s upper class.

Although it’s a ritual to poke fun at these uptowners, the reality is that South Yarra is a great place to stay in Melbourne. Once you get your bearing, it’s really easy to get around, with South Yarra station just a couple of stops from the heart of the city.

Those who have a shopping itch to scratch will feel at home in South Yarra. Rows of boutique shops dot the map, including Chapel Street. This mix of shops, bars and late-night clubs remains one of the most happening nightlife streets in Melbourne.

You’ll find a couple of really stylish boutique hotels in Prahran which I think justify staying here just in themselves. Or you could also look into neighbouring Richmond that is a bit of a blend between South Yarra and Fitzroy, with nightlife and good shopping.

In an elegant heritage building,  Toorak Manor Hotel  has rooms that feel like you’re in a historic house, even though you’re so close to the action.

  • Apartments of South Yarra:  Clean and comfortable rooms offer a nice escape from the bustle out on the surrounding streets.
  • Melbourne South Yarra Central Apartment Hotel:  Some cool art on the walls give the accommodation a bit of colour, along with comfy beds and a great location.

The well-located apartments at  Exclusive Stays – SXY  have balconies with city views, plus there’s even a small rooftop pool!

  • Vogue:  With a great location and facilities, there’s a nice city view and access to an indoor pool.
  • Saint George Accommodation:  Private and quiet, this studio apartment has everything you’ll need in this convenient location close to public transportation.

I love the vibe at  Ovolo South Yarra , which has a hip modern feel and lots of fun treats like a free minibar!

  • The Cullen:  With beautiful Australian art decorating the hotel, and super comfortable rooms, this is another fantastic option in Prahran.
  • Davis Avenue Apartments:  The apartments are bright, clean, and quiet, with a touch of nature in this charming tree-lined street.

The Victorian interiors of  this grand three-bedroom house  offer a luxurious heritage feel in one of Melbourne’s best areas.

  • Exclusive Stays – Seven Yarra:  If you’re looking for something more modern, this two-bedroom apartment has incredible views from its elevated position.

Trendy suburbs with cool nightlife and good dining don’t necessarily have to be expensive. The coastal suburb of St Kilda has all of that – but it is also known for its great selection of budget accommodation, especially for backpackers.

St Kilda lies south of South Yarra, bordered by Albert Park and the waters of Port Phillip Bay. Its beachfront is fun to visit but, be warned, this isn’t one of those Aussie beaches you were told about in the commercials!

The beach, walking tracks and bounty of green space make St Kilda wonderful for being outdoors. As you explore, you’ll find the iconic Luna Park theme park and spot several of Melbourne’s best live music venues.

It only takes about 20 minutes by car from St Kilda to the city centre (and only slightly longer by public transport) so it’s easy enough to reach the main attractions. But if you’re planning to do a lot of sightseeing, you may get a little frustrated about the distance after a couple of days

There’s a cool modern feel to  Selina St Kilda , making this one of the best hostels in Melbourne (with really comfortable rooms).

  • Summer House Melbourne Backpackers:  Clean and spacious with lots of activities to mingle with other travellers.
  • Nomads St Kilda – Base:  There’s a friendly atmosphere with lots of different spaces to hang, from the kitchen to the common rooms.

Decorated with original local artwork, there’s a welcoming atmosphere at  Tolarno Hotel  and great rates during the week.

  • Adara St Kilda:  Spacious and clean, with a large bed, loads of amenities, and great value for money.
  • Sixty Two On Grey Serviced Apartments:  In a historical building from the 1860s, the rooms are relatively simple but spacious and within easy reach of the main sights.

Close to the beach and great dining,  Quest St Kilda Bayside  has lovely rooms and a refreshing pool in the garden.

  • Crest on Park:  Along with lovely modern rooms (some with kitchenettes), guests also get free access to St Kilda Sea Baths.

In a stunning Art Deco building with beautiful rooms and great dining, I think The Prince is easily the best hotel in St Kilda.

  • The Hamptons Apartments: As the name suggests, there’s an elegant beachside theme to the interior design of these large modern apartments.
  • Kimberley Gardens Hotel:  Although it’s set further back from the beach than other options, the apartments and villas are spacious and modern.

And finally I wanted to recommend Brunswick. It’s not normally a top suggestion for where to stay in Melbourne, but it’s a fantastic option for something a lot more local.

North of the CBD, Brunswick is a community of communities. Over the years it’s been where immigrants have settled from Italy, Greece, and the Middle East, so the food scene here is diverse, with a wonderful mix of restaurants, cafes and bakeries.

Along the neighbourhood’s main thoroughfare, Sydney Road, you’ll be in the typical Melbourne landscape of two-story townhouses guiding you down the street. But with every side street is a chance to uncover Brunswick’s vibrant culture.

There are galleries, vintage stores, bookshops going against the grain and craft beer served at half-condemned hotels. Brunswick harbours a wonderful, social atmosphere.

From a friendly hostel to some incredible five-star accommodations in the renovated Pentridge Prison, there are lots of places to stay here – but just getting an apartment or a house and soaking up the local suburb may be what you’re after.

Either way, there’s good transport into the city centre and your money will go a little bit further here than some of the central neighbourhoods.

The space is great with a garden and lounge, and  Landing Pads Brunswick  also has fun events like movie nights and dinners.

If you’re in a group,  Brunswick Hill @ 3056  is a fantastic 3-bedroom apartment with modern finishings and plenty of space.

  • Quest Moonee Valley:  Close to shops and dining, there are standard apartments in different sizes, with friendly and helpful staff.
  • Orangerie:  A beautiful two-bedroom apartments in an old factory that’s been converted with a contemporary and stylish design.

Melbourne Travel Guide

visit melbourne hotels

While Australia's southernmost mainland city seems understated on its surface, visitors quickly learn there are layers of passion, hard work, and history behind every aspect of Melbourne—Australia's cultural capital.

Situated on the Yarra River as it flows into Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne and its population of 5 million inhabits a land that has been lived on by Aboriginal Australians for more than 40,000 years.

After British settlement in the early 1800s, the wealth produced from the nearby gold rush of the mid-19th century funded the development of much of the city you see today. Magnificent Victorian-era buildings such as Parliament House, The Princess Theatre, and The Block Arcade remain as vibrant today as when they first opened, and compete for attention with the striking geometric newcomers that dot the cityscape.

From the Victorian era emerged the city's Hoddle Grid, a layout which created the many laneways now famous for their street art, and alleys that hide world-class restaurants, bars, and boutiques.

You'll notice that Melburnians have a lot of obsessions, most notably coffee, sport, and food. This is great for visitors, as it results in a city that constantly strives for the best. It's evident in the espresso-scented laneways, as baristas grind for that perfect espresso; or in the thousands of flavor combinations that come out of kitchens that encompass cuisines from around the globe, thanks to the city's proud multicultural heritage. And it can be heard coming from the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground when a 100,000-strong crowd packs "The G" for a game of Aussie Rules.

Beyond the arts and all these interests that could keep one endlessly entertained, there is the landscape itself—a mixture of grand parks, impressive gardens and beautiful seasides, all which make Melbourne a must on any Australian itinerary.

Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10 hours)

Best Time to Go

Melbourne's temperate climate means visitors can comfortably sightsee year-round. Major sporting events (Australian Open, F1 Grand Prix) and festivals take place mainly in the warmer months, between November and March. Much of the city's action moves indoors as days become cooler, but Melburnians adapt to their winter well, switching out sun umbrellas for patio heaters at outdoor cafes and rooftop bars. Melbourne weather has a reputation for occasionally having "four seasons in one day," which should be kept in mind when packing for your trip here.

Things to Know

Currency: Australian Dollar (Check the current exchange rate )

Language: English* *Visitors will quickly learn that Australians use a lot of slang in their everyday language, often shortening frequently-used words (i.e. "arvo" for afternoon, "avo" for avocado).

Many common words are also different to their US equivalent. Some handy examples: Elevator = lift Sidewalk = footpath Trash can = bin Cell phone = mobile Cookie = biscuit Chicken = chook Liquor store = bottle shop Flip-flops = thongs Swimsuit = bathers Sweater = jumper

Calling Code: +61

Capital City: Canberra

Tipping is uncommon in Australia. While never expected, it's also seen as inoffensive, should you wish to offer a tip. Exceptional service at a restaurant is an example of a situation in which a tip would happily be accepted.

Australians drive on the left side of the road. People here also keep to the left when walking on the sidewalk or standing on an escalator.

How to Get Around

A relatively flat city, much of Melbourne's sites and attractions can be reached easily on foot—many within walking distance of one another. Public transit is ample within inner Melbourne, and the city's iconic trams are easy to find. Taxis and rideshare options are also readily available.

Tram: The City Circle line is free and a great way to move around the Central Business District (CBD). Twenty-four routes cover more than 160 miles of track. With the exception of the City Circle, you'll need a myki card to ride a tram, and across all other public transit services.

Train: Melbourne's Metro train system includes an underground City Loop, which encompasses the CBD. There are 17 train lines that branch out from the City Loop, which reach further than the tram network, and can often be faster than a tram if journeying more than a couple of miles.

Bus: Your myki will come in handy if you find yourself in need of a bus. While trains and trams access most attractions, buses will come in handy for less accessible parts of town.

Taxi: 13cabs and Silver Top are the two main accredited taxi operators in Melbourne. You can hail them, phone or book using their respective apps. Ride-share: Uber and Ola are popular ride-share options in Melbourne. Another is Shebah, an all-women service.

Neighborhoods to Know

CBD : The CBD (Central Business District) is Melbourne's easy-to-navigate center, with its grid layout encompassed by the free City Circle tram. You'll find many of the city's iconic landmarks here: The State Library of Victoria, Flinders Street Station, Parliament House, and St Paul's Cathedral are standouts; along with historic and lovingly-maintained historic arcades. This is where the city's famous laneways reside, home to scores of tucked-away restaurants, bars, and boutiques. The Bourke Street Mall and Swanston Street are both closed to local traffic—but watch out for trams! Plenty of shopping is to be found around here. Chinatown, on Little Bourke Street, is steeped in history and delicious cuisine, and has formed an intrinsic part of Melbourne since the mid-1800s. Lined with stately London Plane trees, Collins Street has a distinct European vibe. Its east end is where you'll find designer boutiques such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Versace, along with Her Majesty's Theatre.

Southbank : The spire of Melbourne's Arts Centre acts as a beacon for the city's arts precinct on the south side of the Yarra River: The Australian Ballet, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Theatre Company, and Opera Australia all call this institution home. The Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Recital Centre, and Southbank Theatre are also nearby, all notable for their striking architecture as much as the creativity produced inside. The NGV International can also be found in this area, while along the riverbank itself you'll find restaurants, bars, and Crown casino.

St Kilda : Famous for its pier, palm trees, and penguins, this beachside suburb is abuzz on the water and off. Kite-surfing, jet-skiing, and fishing are all popular activities here, but nothing beats the relaxing simplicity in a walk along St Kilda Beach's tree-lined promenade, where nearby attractions include St Kilda Sea Baths, the historic St Kilda Pier, Luna Park amusement park, or one of the many seaside cafes, restaurants, and bars. Acland, Carlyle, and Fitzroy Streets are popular spots for food and shopping; after the sun sets, they are great places for live music, dancing, and nightlife.

Carlton : Head to Lygon Street in this inner-north neighborhood and you'll find Melbourne's Little Italy. Enjoy one of the many Italian restaurants here, or grab a sweet treat from famed pasticceria Brunetti. There are also more than a few gelateria to take your pick from here, too. The nearby Carlton Gardens are beautiful at any time of year, and is where you will find Melbourne Museum and the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building.

Summer: December-February Melbourne's summers are typically hot and dry, but keep in mind the city's reputation for occasionally having "four seasons in one day." Averages can be deceptive because of this, with highs capable of reaching over 100, only to be erased by a cool change that causes temperatures to drop to the 60s. It happens infrequently enough not to affect summer vacation planning, but with that unpredictability in mind, be sure to pack a light jacket or cardigan, just in case.

Autumn: March-May This time of year can feel like an extension to summer, with plenty of warm, sunny days. Mornings become increasingly crisp as the season draws to a close. Evenings out on the town may require a coat.

Winter: June-August Melbourne's winters are mild enough to comfortably spend a day outdoors, with the right amount of layers. While Melbourne never sees a snowfall, winter mornings can be cold enough for frost in some areas, with overnight temperatures nearing freezing on occasion.

Spring: September-November Melbourne can sometimes be a little slow to come out of its winter, but spring here is typically sunny and comfortable, steadily warming up while remaining cool in the evenings.

Below are average temperatures in Fahrenheit. January: 61°F to 81°F February: 61°F to 80°F March: 58°F to 76°F April: 53°F to 70°F May: 49°F to 64°F June: 48°F to 59°F July: 45°F to 58°F August: 46°F to 61°F September: 49°F to 65°F October: 52°F to 69°F November: 55°F to 73°F December: 58°F to 77°F

  • # 10 in Best Beaches in Australia

More than four million people call this big small town home. Yes, Melbourne is a big small town, and no, it's not an oxymoron. See, it contains all the trappings of a major metropolis – vibrant neighborhoods, award-winning cuisine, notable things to do  – but Melburnians manage to do their urban hustle at a leisurely pace. Burrowed in wine country beside Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne's natural landscape anchors its laid-back personality. When you're sampling wine in the nearby Yarra Valley or sipping a flat white at one of Melbourne's charming sidewalk cafes, there's no way you can't relax.
