The vessel: The Seabourn Ovation .

What’s the deal? Seabourn, the ultra-high-end cruise operator owned by Carnival, is widely regarded as one of the most luxurious ways to enjoy the high seas—short of chartering your own megayacht, that is. Its commercial success and vocal fanbase have undoubtedly inspired several hospitality chains (see: Ritz Carlton , Four Seasons , Orient Express ) to announce their own seafaring operations in recent months. Ovation , third-youngest of the seven gigayachts in the Seabourn fleet, has been on the water since 2018, and, because of its size, can feel incredibly private. It’s 690 feet long and only has 300 cabins, so it’s not uncommon to have entire facilities—such as the gym or the by-reservation cabanas on the poop deck—entirely to yourself.

One of the balcony spaces in the Grand Winter Garden Suite.

The Rundown

Did they greet you by name at check-in.

No, but in fairness, check-in here isn’t like walking into a standard hotel. You have to hand over your passport to embark, then walk through an airport security–style metal detector. But the process is quick and efficient, if not exactly the most luxurious part of your trip.

Was a welcome drink ready and waiting when you arrived? (Bonus point if it wasn’t just fruit juice.)

The dining room of the Ovation's Grand Winter Garden Suite—fruit basket and Champagne included.

Yes. In addition to a lovely fruit basket, there was a very good bottle of Montaudon Brut Champagne on ice in my suite, along with notes from the captain and my Suite Host (more on that important role in a second.)

Is there a private butler for every room?

Is the sheet thread count higher than 300.

The interior of a Veranda Suite, similar to the one this writer stayed in.

Yes. While I wasn’t able to determine an exact brand, make, and model, I could tell from the feel that the percale sheets on the bed were pretty high-end. Some hotels on land could learn a thing or two from how Seabourn’s team makes a bed.

Is there a heated floor in the bathroom? What about a bidet?

No, but the all-marble bathrooms are surprisingly well-appointed and feature double sinks, thoughtfully arranged lighting, a deep tub, and a separate shower.

Are the toiletries full-sized?

Yes. Seabourn partnered with Molton Brown on its custom shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion, called Immersive Samphire and Eucalyptus. Fortunately, you can buy your own supply in the gift shop.

Is there a private pool for the room’s exclusive use? How are the spa and gym?

The main pool deck on the Ovation.

Well of course not—this is a boat, after all. But we’re giving the Ovation a bonus point for its wonderful spa, which in all honesty is better than some we’ve visited on dry land. The soothing and surprisingly masculine space is equipped to offer a wide array of services and treatments, including old-school barbershop shaves, manicures, facials, massages, and even acupuncture and medical consultations.

Do you want to spend Friday night in the lobby bar?

The Observation Bar at the back of the ship is the perfect place for post-dinner cocktails.

Is there caviar on the room service menu? If so, what kind?

The Colonnade restaurant, located aft, offers stunning views of the open water.

Yes. Seabourn partners with Regiis Ova to offer a variety of its wares onboard. And don’t be shy: If you want, you can ask room service to deliver a specific quantity (and blinis, potato chips, crème fraîche chives, and the like) to your suite at the same time every day.

Would you buy the vessel if you could?

A treatment room in the Ovation's luxurious spa.

Yes. I didn’t expect to like being onboard the Ovation quite as much as I did, but it was a wonderful experience that left me with a new outlook on sea travel . The service was impeccable, the other guests provided ample opportunities for interesting people-watching, and I’d go back again just for the spa if I could.

Total: 9/10 What Our Score Means: 1-3: Fire your travel agent if they suggest you stay here. 4-6: Solid if you’re in a pinch—but only if you’re in a pinch. 7-8: Very good. We’d stay here again and recommend it without qualms. 9-10: Forget booking a week. When can we move in permanently?

Review: Seabourn Ovation

Image may contain: Transportation, Vehicle, Yacht, Horizon, Nature, Outdoors, Sky, Chair, Furniture, Boat, and Bench

What is the line? Seabourn

Name of ship? Ovation

Passenger occupancy? Just over 600 passengers

Itinerary? St. Maarten to Barbados

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

While you may expect tuxedoed butlers, formal dinners, and white glove service, what you will find is quite different. Sure, there are butlers and fancy meals, but missing is the stiff-upper-lip crowd. Seabourn’s customer is adventurous, curious, and well-traveled.

The staff is the biggest calling card for Seabourn. They go above and beyond (and then some). No matter the destination, this is why Seabourn receives such high accolades.

Tell us about the ship in general.

With a dozen decks, Ovation is spacious with more space per passenger than you will find on most other ships. At its heart is the main pool ringed by lounge chairs and a pair of whirlpools. There are numerous restaurants, a full-service spa, expansive gym, several bars, and lots of tucked-away outdoor decks where you can spend hours watching the sea without anyone around you.

Thoughtful design elements appear everywhere, from the art and photography collection that spurs conversation to the living room ambiance of the main lounge. The leather reclining chairs at the front of the ship surrounded by shelves of interesting books and magazines is perfect for a day at sea. If a cruise ship conjures images of crowded eateries and long lines, Seabourn is just the opposite. There are rarely waits anywhere, and you are more likely to find quiet spots for contemplation than raucous debauchery.

Ovation plies the Caribbean waters in the winter months, but crosses the Atlantic for Mediterranean and European adventures during spring and summer.

Who is on board?

Seabourn’s higher price point means this is not the cruise for a weekend vacation on a budget. Instead, you will find a mature traveler who is curious about exploring new places and getting to know the people around them. Previously, it would have been fair to say that the guest list is mostly made up of high net worth individuals, but today, Seabourn brings in a wider range of travelers ready to make a splurge on bucket list trips. Most hail from North America and Europe, but the demographics vary by itinerary.

There is a much younger age demographic than previous years, too. It’s not just retired couples, but also travelers in their 40s and 50s, as well as multi-generational families excited to travel together, but you won’t usually see children. Seabourn as a whole is evolving, and there is a freedom to be yourself on the ship that was not always that way before. It creates a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for everyone.

Describe the cabins.

The cabins, known as suites, are larger than average with spacious living areas and pillow-top bedding. Walk-in closets are a pleasant surprise, and the marble bathrooms have soaking tubs and showers with excellent water pressure, and a stash of Molton Brown toiletries.

All cabins have ocean views, and most are Veranda Suites with balconies. Premium suites expand upon the living space with larger seating areas and bigger bathrooms. One of the largest is the Owner’s Suite, which has a lovely corner terrace.

The cabins come with complimentary minibars that can be stocked with your preferred beverage. Want a specific Pinot Grigio and club soda restocked daily? You got it. A pair of butlers attends to each cabin, refreshing them twice a day. They leave nothing askew in the room. Expect clothes to be folded, charging cables to be tied with a ribbon and a tray of soaps to meet your arrival to choose your preferred scent. No detail seems forgotten.

Tell us about the crew.

An almost two-to-one ratio of guests to staff means you are always looked after no matter where you are. The crew makes the trip—always cheery and never bothered, it’s hard to find fault with their disposition. When the volume on my cabin’s TV appeared stuck, an army of staffers descended on the problem and followed up multiple times to make sure it was working properly. They seem to always be there when you need them without being intrusive.

In the sushi restaurant (a personal favorite), the maître d’ Tomomi greeted me with genuine pleasure and always knew my order. In fact, servers in the restaurants remembered guest names and personal preferences, an impressive feat. I have sailed on dozens of cruise ships, and Seabourn nails the service aspect in every regard.

What food and drink options are available on board?

As a member of the culinary Chaîne des Rôtisseurs association, Seabourn takes dining seriously, and you won’t go hungry on any sailing. Almost everything is included with Seabourn from meals and snacks to a full bar menu of drinks. There are some premium labels with an additional cost, but the complimentary list is quite extensive. Room service is a special treat, especially when they dress the table with white linens and elegant china. Don’t worry about packing a tux or ball gown, Seabourn has an elegant casual dress code in the evening. There is typically one formal evening, but fancy dress is not required. Most guests don blazers with designer jeans and cocktail dresses.

Specialty restaurants are also included, and only The Grill by Thomas Keller requires a reservation. There, you can indulge in tableside Caesar salad made to order, Lobster Thermidor, and sizzling steaks that would otherwise cost triple digits on land. Seabourn is planning to phase out the Thomas Keller restaurant in the coming year, however, and replace it with a new, but equally exciting concept.

At The Colonnade, breakfast and lunch are available buffet-style with live cooking stations and an al fresco patio. Themed menus change daily. A poolside grill serves up casual fare like pizza, gyros, and salads, but in the evening, it transitions to “Earth and Ocean” preparing unique variations on international cuisine. My lentil naan was both tasty and filling. The sushi venue, my favorite spot on the ship, has made-to-order rolls and bento boxes. The Restaurant is the main dining room, and the coffee shop has a range of sandwiches, pastries, and gelato made on board. Occasionally, the chef has live cooking demonstrations by the pool, which are popular.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The spa is a lovely space at the front of the ship with relaxation areas, a sauna, beauty salon, and fitness center. Yoga and fitness classes are in a dedicated studio, and the treatment menu is curated by Dr. Andrew Weil. It’s not just massages and facials; the menu is extensive including things like acupuncture, body sculpting, and nutrition-focused consultations.

In the gym, chilled water and towels line the shelves, and the workout equipment features built-in TVs and USB power ports. There is also a walking track around the pool area and on the lower level. No matter which pool you choose, there is always a basket with sunscreen and wipes for sunglasses (you'll even find those benefits when you disembark the ship in port).

What about activities and entertainment?

Most travelers get out and explore the destinations, and there are often free transfers in ports and complimentary tours to keep them busy. What sets Seabourn apart is that its smaller ships can visit ports of call less frequented by larger vessels. With such a well-traveled clientele, it is the lesser-known destinations that many will find appealing.

Not everyone goes ashore though, and there is no reason to feel guilty about it. Live music swoons in various bars around the ship, and poolside concerts take place regularly. Educational lectures, board games, jigsaw puzzles, and a thorough library fill the gaps between land-based tours and pool time. Entertainment is available on occasion by the pool and always in the lounge on a set schedule. But if it’s a late night you’re after, the club is always a good time.

A small cast of singers and dancers perform most evenings, and there are special guest entertainers and comedians that add to the variety. It’s not unusual for some cruisers to be on board for several cruises in a row, and they appreciate the oft-changing lineup of performers. A small casino suits those that want to press their luck.

How was the experience for families?

This is not Seabourn’s focus, and there are rarely kids on the ship. Instead, you are more likely to see parents traveling with their adult children.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

Starting in St. Maarten and winding through the Leeward Islands down to Barbados, the Caribbean ports were colorful. Many of the excursions centered around beach visits, botanical gardens, and water sport activities.

My favorite was the visit to Carambola Beach on St. Kitts where Seabourn has an exclusive beach club. There, they set up a lavish barbecue, had plenty of umbrella-shaded lounge chairs, and all kinds of watersport equipment for guests to use without charge. It was also where they did their famous Champagne and caviar service with the staff wading through the ocean fully dressed serving bubbly from a surfboard dressed in white linens. It’s a highlight of most Seabourn voyages.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Single-use plastics are on the way out. Instead, refillable water bottles get stocked in cabins daily, and reusable coffee cups replace the traditional paper to-go cups. Food waste biodigesters break down unused food to help reduce overall waste.

Anything we missed?

For those that want even more privacy and elevated service, The Retreat is a private area in the front of the ship with cabanas. There, a dedicated team of butlers serves from an upscale menu with premium drinks and a shaded whirlpool. Here, the perks get a further upgrade to Elemis toiletries, fancier towels and drinks, and special dinners under the stars.

Seabourn is reinventing itself and shedding any stodgy atmosphere in favor of a younger, more active experience. This is notable in the new expedition vessels it launched to places like Antarctica and Greenland.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

Known for its intimate ships, upscale service and interiors, and smaller port destinations, Seabourn delivers a top-notch cruise product for the discerning traveler. With a price to match, it is a stellar experience that has repeat cruisers swearing off any other line. Having sailed with Seabourn in the Mediterranean, I already had high expectations for this Caribbean adventure, and I was not disappointed.

Seabourn Ovation adheres to the line's penchant for luxury, offering all-suite accommodations, fine dining experiences and indulgent onboard activities. All suites boast verandas that overlook the ocean, plus standard amenities like a complimentary in-suite bar and flat-screen TVs. Extra perks, like spa-style baths drawn by your personal suite stewardess, are available. Most recent guests were pleased with the level of service on board, though some had issues booking shore excursions at the designated counter.

Amenities range from complimentary fitness classes to spa and salon treatments to a deck with private cabanas and a whirlpool. Come nighttime, cruisers can unwind at the alfresco Sky Bar, try their luck at the casino or enjoy a movie or dancing under the stars.

Passengers also have a variety of eateries to choose from, including casual and fine dining venues like the Japanese-focused Sushi and the buffet-style Colonnade. A new venue, Solis, replaced the ship's Thomas Keller-affiliated restaurant in 2024.

Ovation sails throughout the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and more.

Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite

The Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite is a spacious haven at sea. It is full of designer touches and a private veranda for enjoying ever-changing views.

In this review

The Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite is the most popular type of accommodation onboard and it’s easy to see why. Every suite is bursting with luxurious finishes and subtle designer touches, as well as an extra-deep veranda.

The layout is similar to the suites onboard Seabourn’s earlier Odyssey-class vessels. In fact the size is identical, the real difference is in the design by Adam D. Tihany. He has softened the look by replacing the sharp Nordic lines with gentle curves as well as a subtle palette of blues and creams. Tihany offsets this with dark timber highlights and gleaming chrome accents.

These spacious suites are all located forward and midship over seven passenger decks. Also, they are located well away from the dining and entertainment areas so are always quite.

A gracious stewardess services the suite twice daily. Also, she makes sure you always have fresh fruit and that you never run out of bath products. In addition guests can choose from a selection of bathroom amenities, including hypoallergenic products. There is also an extensive pillow menu.

Room ratings

Seabourn ovation veranda suite layout.

The Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suites are the same size as those on all the other luxury Seabourn ships. Each one has 28 sq. m. / 302 sq. ft. of internal space, in addition to a veranda measuring 6-7 sq. m. / 68-83 sq. ft.

The layout of the Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite will be familiar to Seabourn regulars. There is a wide entry hall that runs down one side with a vanity area and makeup mirror. A luxurious marble bathroom and a walk-in closet are also both accessed from the hall.

The living space has two different zones. There is a bedroom at one end as well as a spacious sitting/dining area at the other with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that lead on to the fully furnished veranda.

A designer-style living space

The living space is sophisticated and elegant. It was created by the acclaimed designer Adam D. Tihany who’s also been responsible for the decor of some of the worlds finest hotels. Tihany used a soothing palette of cool blues and creams, accented by dark wood fittings and chrome highlights for a really smart finish.

This wonderful living space has two distinct zones: A zen-like sleeping area as well as a tastefully decorated sitting/dining space.

In the sleeping area you can choose a queen or twin bed setup. The mattress is very comfortable and you can also select either a duvet or blanket, depending on the climate. A hand-crafted leather bedhead and dark timber inlays frame the bed. There are also ornate lamps as well as multidirectional reading lights.

On each side of the bed are nightstands with cleverly designed split-level drawers to store reading glasses or other little items. Also, there is a special book compartment for bedside reading material.

Another thoughtful addition is the bedside power unit with European and US points as well as a handy USB slot for charging your mobile devices.

Separating the sleeping and sitting areas are two unobtrusive, dark wood cabinets. These provide a visual divide between the spaces – one contains the mini bar while the other houses the entertainment unit and provides extra storage space. Even here the smallest details have Tihany’s touch, like the unique chrome cupboard handles.

Tihany’s smart decor makes the sitting area in the Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite seem even more spacious than that of the Odyssey-class ships. A plush sofa sits on one side, while on the other there is a glass-topped dining table and hand-crafted leather chairs.

Another clever design touch is the ottoman which doubles as a coffee table. The top flips to reveal a dark wood tray. There’s is also storage space inside the ottoman.

Your own ocean view veranda

I think the highlight of the Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite is the spacious veranda itself. In fact it is the perfect place to relax and there is plenty of room for the outdoor furniture that includes a table, armchairs and ottomans. Also, every veranda is very private.

It’s worth noting that the verandas on deck 5 are partially enclosed. So rather than floor to railing glass they are part metal, part glass from floor to teak rail.

Also, unlike the Odyssey-class ships the veranda is not genuine teak. Rather it is faux-timber, common to the pool decks of less luxurious ships.

Hotel-style bathroom

The hotel-style bathroom in the Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite has genuine wow-factor. It sparkles with beautifully crafted chrome fittings and gleaming white and dove grey marble.

There is a full sized tub as well as a separate shower with a tight fitting glass door so there are no pesky leaks. In addition, there are large double vanities and plenty of storage space around and below them.

Hermès and L’Occitane soaps are included in initial bathroom setup, but your stewardess will replenish these with Molton Brown spa products made exclusively for Seabourn.

There is plenty of storage space in the Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite too. A walk-in closet has hanging space for at least two cases full of clothing. There are also deep drawers as well as shelving for other personal items.

There is more storage space in the sideboard cabinet opposite the foot of the bed, as well as in the dark wood cabinets in the living space.

It’s worth noting that the bed is not quite high enough to easily fit some large hard-shell luggage underneath.

Insider’s tip:  Flip open your hard shell cases and they will easily slide under the bed.

Veranda Suite positions

There are 267 beautiful Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suites spread across passenger decks 5 to 11. Indeed, decks 6 ,7 and 8 have the largest number of Veranda Suites with 50 to 64 suites on each deck.

Insider’s tip:  A handful of Veranda Suites are located on decks 10 and 11 among a small group of Penthouse Suites. I recommend these for a greater sense of exclusivity.

There are six Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite categories (V1 to V6). While the suite layouts are identical there are two significant points of difference to be aware of:

  • Position on the ship V1 – V4 category suites are located forward or on lower decks, while V5 – V6 have preferred midship or high deck locations.
  • Veranda railings The more expensive V3 – V6 category suites feature all-glass veranda railings from floor to teak rail, but V1 – V2 category suites are part metal, part glass from floor to teak rail.

Veranda Suite inclusions

The Seabourn Ovation Veranda Suite includes the following amenities:

  • Welcome champagne and canapés.
  • Queen-size bed or two twin beds.
  • Choice of pillows to suit your preference.
  • Nightly turndown service.
