Enjoy a visual and sensory experience on our half-day tours visiting 2 to 4 beautifully nurtured and loved gardens in Wanaka Lakes district. Daily tours from October to April. Max 7 participants. Each ½ day tour includes transport, refreshments, a local guide and informative narrative. Selected gardens are private properties unavailable to the general public. Simultaneously, our tours add value and gratitude to the outstanding private properties we visit in the Lake Wanaka Upper Clutha district.

The Central Otago climate (frost, drought, heat) creates unique gardens and offers the opportunity to discover gardeners' strategies for these conditions. 

The surprising variety of gardens is the WOW of our tours, we visit all styles of gardens.

The guided narrative of each garden includes:

Each tour visits 1, 2, 3 or 4 very different properties, lasting 2 to 5 hours and costing $95 to $170 per person, with discounts from the second participant. Pricing schedule here. 

Refreshments are offered in the 1, 3 and 4 gardens tour. Pick up at a pre-arranged spot in Wanaka, transport to gardens, and return.

The Gardener

Long-term Wanaka resident well-known for her community involvement, Florence Micoud has a long experience and knowledge of gardening. For seven years, she worked as an information manager for a French leading organic gardening company, producing a substantial magazine, publishing books and operating the visitor centre Terre Vivante. Florence led many guided tours at this centre featuring stunning gardens, eco-building, renewable energy and sustainable opportunities. 

Florence has enjoyed gardening since childhood, with her Dad showing her how to care for plants and her Mum teaching her how to use them. Over the years, she’s created several veggie gardens in the various properties she has lived in with her family.

Her deep interest in and love for nature, trees, birds and plants all converge in gardens. The idea of a garden tour for locals and visitors came from the deep joy of sharing she experienced in visiting stunning local gardens in Wanaka.

All gardens vary in size and style, from small urban sections to 2.5 hectares of lifestyle property.

All guided garden tours are carbon net zero  (non-certified)

We can offer customized tours for groups of 3 participants or more (eg. flat terrain, vegetable focus, tree focus, etc.) Call Florence to discuss.

For groups larger than 7 persons, we can arrange two groups in the same gardens on the same day, with garden-related activities and itinerary suggestions for the other group. A discount of 15% applies to all participants.

NZ HOUSE & GARDEN TOURS RETURNS TO WĀNAKA

Glass-fronted, architecturally-designed new builds to restored heritage homes, sprawling glades to manicured inner-city patio gardens – tickets for the 2022 season of the NZ House & Garden Tours are on sale from October 5, 2021. And for the first time the tour will also have weekend getaway packages planned around each of the four locations.

Wānaka properties will be showcased as part of the 2022 season that also includes Nelson, Clevedon in Auckland, and Manawatū, for the first time in its 14-year history.

“We are excited to be showcasing Wānaka as part of the tour. The destinations are always highly-anticipated and the tours have a loyal following,” NZ House & Garden Tours event manager, Nadia Isaacs, says.

“We carefully select a range of eight to 10 properties that we have never featured, before to ensure no two tours are the same. We know that more than half of tour attendees travel from outside that region, so this season we have designed a weekend getaway very much in keeping with a style that emulates the pages of  NZ House & Garden , with either a four-day luxury escorted tour, or a three-day self-drive weekend.

“And we anticipate people who live in those areas may want to be part of their local weekend packages too, either with local friends or visitors from around the country.”

The NZ House & Garden   Tours are New Zealand’s largest and most-established charity house tours, with proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Tickets for the NZ House & Garden Tour are $95 and are on sale from today. This sees attendees drive themselves to each property, providing the freedom to experience every house at their own pace.

The self-drive 2-night, 3-day packages also allow the one-day tour to be done at your leisure, and includes a guaranteed House Tour ticket, accommodation, car rental, a three-course welcome dinner and a free day to explore the region. Planned for Nelson, Wānaka  and Manawatū, these prices start from $659 per person.

The luxury, chauffeured tours are for all four locations for 4 days and 3 nights, and include a guaranteed House Tours ticket, premium accommodation, fine dining, winery tastings, art trails, cooking classes and more. They have been designed for either four-person private tours for $2,299 per person, or shared groups of 10 people for $1,599 per person, shared twin. 

“We are working with a luxury travel provider to offer a weekend getaway customised to each group of discerning travellers, with a mix of attractions and free time, with the house tours one of the weekend’s highlights.”

NZ House & Garden  editor Naomi Larkin says the tours help bring the pages of the magazine to life: “Some are properties we have featured in the magazine with a number of new ones we have found specifically for each tour,” Larkin says. 

“All the details and personal touches that make a house a home are on display, and you are able to immerse yourself in the diverse interiors, the furnishings and art work that give these places character and heart. Garden enthusiasts won’t be disappointed as many of these houses also have beautiful gardens and we aim to include a wonderful standalone garden on every tour.”

The series would not be a success without the support of hundreds of Breast Cancer Foundation volunteers who help at the tours – often people whose lives have been impacted by cancer.

Run by Stuff Events, the House Tours makes a minimum pledge of $100,000 in donations and $120,000 in media advertising for the charity.

Ticket-holders to the Wanaka House and Garden Tour spent the past weekend exploring some of Wanaka’s most interesting properties. 

The tour, organised by the Wanaka Community Hub and Aspiring Rotary, gave one-off access to some of the town’s most exciting homes and loveliest gardens. 

No wonder then that the 500 tickets available for the event sold out within 48 hours. 

Visitors had the opportunity to see a spectacular six-acre garden, many decades in the making; New Zealand’s first certified passive house; a new three-storey property, complete with wine cellar and spectacular lakes views; and a heritage-listed rural cottage, tastefully resorted and decorated.

“What felt really cool is we weren’t just looking at big flash houses and gardens,” hub manager Gina Treadwell said. 

Organisers were careful to incorporate a real variety of properties across the Upper Clutha: gardens, from estates to small homes, and from old to new.

While they hoped it would be popular, organisers didn’t expect the level of demand the tour generated. 

This architecturally-designed family home made the most of expansive views.

Even the waiting list was “huge”, said Gina. “It seems people really love these sorts of things.” 

Feedback from the event, which ran on both Saturday and Sunday, had been really positive, and the same went for the sell-out Saturday night garden party. 

The event was a fundraiser for the Wanaka Community Hub, with all proceeds from the tour going towards reducing the remaining debt on the hub’s build. 

Gina said the final count on money raised would take place later in the week but she hoped the event had brought in a good figure.  

She thanked the host of people that helped make the tour possible: the people behind the scenes like the committee that met every week for months to help plan it, the 120 volunteers who gave their time over the weekend, and the homeowners who opened up their properties for the weekend.
