Travelling to Mokpo from Seoul

The most convenient way to reach Mokpo is by taking the KTX from Seoul Station. There are around 7 KTX Trains from Seoul spread throughout the day. However, we highly recommend taking the morning trains (around 6:30am or 7:40am) so you’ll have a full day to spend in Mokpo. The train journey takes roughly 2.5hrs.

If you need more options, you can also depart from Yongsan Station in Seoul as there are more train timings to Mokpo.

The KTX tickets from Seoul station to Mokpo will set you back 53,100won. You can make a reservation via the Korail website , or head down to the station and purchase it physically. Do note that even if you reserve your KTX ticket online, you will still need to exchange it for a ticket at the counter.

If you’re not rushing for time, you can opt for an Intercity bus from Seoul, which takes approximately 3hr 50mins. It’s also cheaper than taking a KTX!

Take A Blast To The Past At Sihwa Alley

Located in Seosan-dong, Sihwa Alley is a popular Mokpo tourist spot as it gives off an old-school vibe that would immediately transport you back in time.

Sihwa Alley is also a filming location for various dramas and movies, so you’ll be able to find plenty of photo spots. The most popular one would be Yeonhee’s Supermarket, which was featured in ‘1987: When The Day Comes’.

Exploring a traditional market is one of our favourite ways to get a sense of how the locals live life. There are several markets in Mokpo, but make sure to pay a visit to Dongbu Market, which is the largest traditional market in Mokpo City consisting of 375 stores!

Here, you can dig into Korean street snacks such as tteokbokki, gimbap, sundae & more. Being near the sea, you’ll also get a variety of seafood here. Grab a plate of assorted sashimi and enjoy them while touring the market!

Enjoy The Sunset On The Mokpo Marine Cable Car

The Mokpo Marine Cable Car is the longest cable car in Korea with a length of 3.23km, and we highly recommend visiting near sunset for the best views. Here, you’ll get a balanced view of mountains, sea and city. If you visit during sunset, you’ll also get to witness the sun setting behind the iconic Mokpo bridge drenched in a beautiful golden light.

You can choose to purchase either a one-way ticket or a round-trip ticket when taking the cable car.

There are 3 stations in relation to the Mokpo Marine Cable Car: Bukhang, Yudalsan and Gohado. Bukhang and Gohado stations are both starting points, while Yudalsan is a mid-point stop along the cable car. We took the direction from Bukhang to Gohado and it went in a descending direction.

You can purchase tickets at level 1 of Bukhang station, and the round trip price for a normal cabin is 22,000won for adults and 16,000won for children. If you opt for a one-way trip, it’s priced at 18,000won for adults and 12,000won for children.

If you have more time on your hands, travel to neighbouring Sinan, a county known for the 1004 islands surrounding it.

Take a tour on a yacht in Sinan to explore the surrounding islands, where you’ll get a different view of the Cheonsa Bridge. On the yacht, you can chill, feed seagulls, and even try dipping your feet into the ocean!

MOKPO IN SOUTH KOREA – BEST THINGS TO DO

WHAT TO DO IN MOKPO? WHAT IS MOKPO KNOWN FOR? IS MOKPO WORTH A VISIT?

Mokpo is located in the extreme southwest of Korea . Mokpo is a city surrounded by the sea. It is also a city of sailors with its many harbors. For Koreans, Mokpo is mostly known as the departure city to take the ferry to Jeju . ( If you are taking the ferry to Jeju, read this post )

Although not very touristy, Mokpo has plenty of great things to see . Count 2 days for visiting all the main sights.

Mokpo has for instance an excellent Maritime Museum where shipwrecks from the 11th and 14th centuries are on display as well as multiple treasures from shipwrecks. You can also soak up the city with a stroll through Yudalsan Mountain. Or take a cable car to cross the city and the sea with many islands on display.

A bit of history about Mokpo

Mokpo served as a major harbor during the Japanese Occupation (1910–1945), due to its location along the sea routes between Japan and China. The large number of islands surrounding Mokpo also served as a protective barrier, making the city less vulnerable. During the occupation, large residential areas were built to accommodate the Japanese colonists, which are now the city’s historic districts.

The end of World War II and Korea’s independence in 1945 were responsible for the city slowly losing its position as a host to major government organizations and wartime industries. This led to a reduction in the size of Mokpo, which is currently a mid-sized city of the Honam region and has roughly 200,000 inhabitants.

If you stop at Mokpo during a trip to South Korea, you will want to go for a trip at sea to see some of the surrounding islands. There is an archipelago that is part of the Dadohae Maritime National Park with more than 1,700 islands. The vast majority of these islands are uninhabited and are only small islets. On the larger ones, you will meet fishing communities who have practiced traditional fishing for centuries. There are a few ferries from Mokpo to travel to some of these islands.

We stopped in Mokpo, and we decided to take the ferry to go to Jeju Island. We were pleasantly surprised by the city and what it has to offer. Mokpo is definitely a place that we would want to go back to and explore more of the surrounding islands and the coast in the southern part of Korea.

How to get to Mokpo?

It takes about 5h to get to Mokpo by car from Seoul (including 1 hour to get out of Seoul because of the traffic). After leaving Seoul, the way to get to Mokpo is very easy. You will pass near Taean, which we highly recommend visiting if you have time ( full post here ).

Mokpo is well connected to Seoul via KTX. From Seoul, about 8 trains are going to Mokpo every day. The journey takes about 2.5 hours. The departure is from Seoul Station. >> BOOK HERE

It is very convenient to travel to Mokpo by train. Mokpo is the last stop of the Honam Rail Line.

One of the most significant benefits of opting for a train during your exploration of South Korea is that departures and arrivals are at the central stations, so you don’t have to spend your time and money on transfers.

Best things to do in Mokpo

1. take the cable car in mokpo.

This is the main attraction in Mokpo. The cable car opened in 2019. Mokpo Marine Cable Car, is actually the longest (3.23 kilometers) and highest (155 meters from the ground) cable car in Korea. It crosses Yudalsan Mountain and the sea to reach Gohado Island.

Mokpo Marine Cable Car offers an amazing view of the city of Mokpo and the surrounding natural beauties. We absolutely loved the experience. We did it during the day, but we heard that at night it is even more beautiful, especially to see the amazing Mokpo Bridge all lighten up.

There are 3 stations to get in and out of the Cable Car. 1 is located in the city, 1 on top of Yudalsan Mountain, and the last one on Gohado island, the final stop. One-third of gondolas have a glass bottom which allows you to get the extra thrills when taking the Cable Car. There is an extra charge if you want to hop on one of the glass gondolas.

Parking Facilities

Bukhang Platform – 400 parking spaces (including bus parking lot). This is the parking located in the city right next to the entrance of the Cable Car. So if you stay in Mokpo, head to Bukhang Platform first. Gohado Island Platform – 500 parking spaces (including bus parking lot). This is located at the final stop on Gohado island. You can also choose to drive there first and cross the beautiful Mokpo Bridge. However, starting your journey at Bukhang would be more convenient.

Parkings are free for the first 3 hours.

2. Visit Gatbawi Rocks

Nature can sometimes mold unique and strange shapes. Eroded by water and wind, these two rocks are shaped like traditional Korean hats called gat. There are a few legends about these 2 rocks.

This is how the legends go…

A long time ago, there was a young salt merchant who lived with his sick father. Even though he was poor, he was a kind man who would do anything to help his sick father. He worked as a farmer for a rich estate away from his home to save money to cure his father. He did his job well, but in the end, his master didn’t pay him…

When he returned home after a month, he found his father dead. He regretted having been foolish not to care for his father for a month. What he could do at least was try to give his father a proper burial. Unfortunately, while moving his father’s body, he dropped the coffin into the sea by mistake. He felt awful about his father’s sudden underwater burial.

To make amends, he remained at the spot wearing a gat (this traditional Korean hat) until his death. Sometime after his death, two rocks rose from this spot and they were called Gatbawi (bawi means rock). People have called the bigger rock “father rock” and the small one “son rock”.

There is also another legend that says that Gatwabi Rocks is when Buddha and Arahan, one of his disciples who attained Nirvana, traveled across Yeongsangang River and rested at this place. They continued their journey, leaving their hats behind. It is said that their hats became the rocks which are also known as Monk Rocks.

Whatever the true story is, we highly recommend a visit to the Gatwabi rocks (갓바위 문화타운). They are the main attractions in Mokpo. The rocks are located by the water and accessible with a wooden bridge. It is a very nice place, which we enjoyed a lot during sunset.

3. Hike Yudalsan Mountain

A walk up to the two peaks of Yudal Mountain is a great experience if you are visiting Mokpo. It allows you to have a beautiful view of the city but also the surrounding sea and the many islands. The hike is relatively easy. It takes around 1 hour to get to the tallest peak. From there, you have the perfect 360-degree view. On the way up, there are lots of places to stop to take nice photos or take a rest. Some people would even get a picnic in some areas.

We especially enjoyed the few pavilions and temples on the way.

Another way to get to the top is to take the Mokpo Marine Cable Car and make a stop at the middle station. From there, you only need to take a few stairs to reach to the peak.

4. Stroll on Peace Square and watch the musical fountain

For a pleasant walk along the sea, and especially during sunset, head to Peace Square. It is a popular spot for people living in Mokpo. Families head there with their kids who can enjoy a nice bicycle ride, people jog there, walk their dog,s etc. Overall we enjoyed strolling along the plaza’s paths, which stretches out along the coastline. The view of the river is really nice.

Peace Square is also called Pyeonghwa Plaza in order to commemorate the winning of “Nobel Prize” by the former president, Kim Dae-jung, in 2000.

As part of Peace Square, you can also enjoy the musical water fountain every night at 8pm. The show is really nice, it involves music and lights. Between songs, you can even send personalized messages.

5. Mokpo Maritime Museum

Mokpo Maritime Museum was one of our favorite activities in Mokpo. Since we love boats and the sea, we are always keen to learn more about it. This museum is located next to Mokpo harbor. Through your exploration, you learn all about the history of Korean fishing over the centuries. We discover the traditional fishing villages, but also the techniques specific to the country and many other things. Perhaps the most impressive that can be seen here are the shipwrecks that trace the evolution of buildings from the Goryeo dynasty to the present day. Quite impressive.

After the visit, the rest hall and its large windows open their arms to the sea for visitors. Ancient vessels rest just a short distance away from their modern counterparts, giving tourists an idea of what the ships exhibited in the museum might have been used for in daily life.

However, what we didn’t like is that most of the descriptions are in Korean. There was a guide during our visit who explained some of the exhibits, but otherwise, we had to use Google Translate to read some of the descriptions. Nevertheless, we still recommend visiting the Mokpo Maritime Museum, we enjoyed it.

6. Take a boat tour to visit the surrounding islands

Hongdo and Henkgando islands

By taking the ferry from Mokpo, you can travel to the islands of Hongdo or Henkgando. It is very nice to experience life on the islands animated by fishermen. On these islands, fishing traditions have stayed for centuries.

Gohado Island

Gohado Island is located just 2km apart from Mokpo. It is accessible by Cable Car or you can also drive there as it is connected by the famous Mokpo Bridge.

Gohado Island was located in a strategic location during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. The island served as a defending ground against the Japanese successfully led by the well-known Admiral Yi-Sun. To commemorate this, there is a monument for Admiral Yi Sun-sin.

From Gohado you can admire Mokpo Harbor, and the beautiful Yudalsan Mountain.

Finally, make sure to head to Coffee Panache, located in a very modern building. It looks like a few containers piled up in a random fashion and bright orange colors. Another very cool cafe in Korea.

Oedaldo island

Oedaldo Island is also called the Island of Love. It is located 6km west of Mokpo. Its preserved nature and clean sea make it a favorite spot for locals and tourists visiting Mokpo. It has a beautiful view of the surrounding islands, a fine sandy beach, and it’s one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Mokpo.

Children can have fun playing in the water, parents can enjoy a relaxing time. Lovers can experience a beautiful promenade overlooking the open beach. Boasting a pristine beach and beautiful natural environment, “Oedaldo Island of Love”, which was selected as the “Best 30 Islands to Rest in Korea,” by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, is a must-see in Mokpo.

7. Admire Mokpo Bridge

If you are traveling to Mokpo, and you enjoy photography, you will not be disappointed. One of the most impressive sights is the famous Mokpo Bridge. Beautiful during the day and even more impressive at night. Taking a photo of the Mokpo Bridge would certainly be one of the highlights of your trip to Mokpo.

The bridge is an architectural marvel and made us feel a bit like San Francisco .

Mokpo Bridge was built in 2012. It connects Mokpo to Gohado Island with a total length of 4km.

8. Visit the Dongmyeong-dong fish market

Like any good port city, Mokpo also has an amazing fish market. Opened in 1908 as the Dongmyeong-dong Fish Market, this covered market sells fresh, dried, and fermented fish and seafood. The best way to visit it is in the early morning when the merchants set up their stands. After that the aisles fill up really fast.

The market is open every day except the first Sunday of the month. There are more than 125 stalls.

The most popular fish in the Southwest but also in Jeju , is the Cutlassfish. It is caught widely in the Yellow Sea and southern areas. Cutlassfish is a very long fish of around 1m in length but very thin. Its taste is really delicious. Make sure to give it a try if you have the chance. The grilled cutlassfish is the most popular. Some stalls also serve it as sashimi.

Another popular fish is the Yellow croaker. This is a much smaller fish but rich in protein. It is usually served in soup, braised or steamed.

There are a few fish markets in Mokpo, however, Dongmyeong-dong, is the oldest one and most traditional.

9. Visit the Mokpo Modern History Museum

Housed in the former Japanese consulate this museum has interesting displays about the history of Mokpo. It’s a good place to start your visit to Mokpo as it covers the history of some other attractions and the view from the gardens gives a good overview of the town. Make sure to visit the former WWII bomb shelters at the rear of the building.

Mokpo Modern History Museum is the oldest building in Mokpo among modern buildings. It retained its exact shape from its original construction. Now it is a National Historic Site. It has opened as a history museum in February 2014.

10. Try the local food, it’s delicious

If you like to eat, you must try Mokpo’s top 9 dishes: sebal nakji (octopus dish), hongeo samhap (skate and pork sashimi with kimchi), kkotge muchim (crab salad), mineo hoe ( raw croaker), galchi jorim (steamed swordfish), byeongeo hoe (pampus argenteus) & jjim (large steamed castagnole), junchi muchim (spicy herring salad), and ureokganguk (dried scorpion fish soup) .

The best place to taste these dishes is undoubtedly the Jayoo market in Mokpo. This market offers all the typical dishes of Mokpo, fresh seafood but also textiles at low prices.

Before leaving Mokpo, we advise you to stop at the Colombang bakery near the station to taste some very good breads. This bakery (ranked the top 5 bakeries in Korea), is famous for its cheesy cream breads and shrimp baguettes.

Where to stay in Mokpo?

Hanok hotel yongsanjae (the most stunning one).

Hanok Hotel Yongsanjae , is undoubtedly the most stunning hotel in Mokpo. It is built like a Hanok, the traditional Korean architecture, but is very modern and very well equipped. S

o you will have all your modern comfort but in a traditional setting. We absolutely loved this place. However, Hanok Hotel Yongsanjae , is not located exactly in Mokpo. It’s a bit on the outskirts of the city. If you do not mind driving a bit, then we highly recommend a stay here.

Gallery Family Hotel (the most artistic one)

Gallery Family Hotel is a gorgeous place located right in the middle of the city, but surrounded by a nice garden. It is the most artistic one, as it has many paintings and sculptures all around the hotel.

It looks like a gallery. The rooms are really comfortable and modern. It also has free parking. This hotel is not very big and only has a few rooms, hence it gets fully booked very quickly.

38th Street Guesthouse (the cheapest one)

This hotel has certainly the best value for money and by far the best location if you are taking the ferry to Jeju . It located just a few minutes walk from the main harbor. The rooms are really charming in wooden design. There is also a free breakfast in the morning, simple but good enough to start the day. We also recommend staying at 38th Street Guesthouse if you are in Mokpo.

Other things to do near Mokpo?

Namhae is Korea’s fifth largest island and is famous for its slower pace of life, beautiful sea and stunning nature. It is completely underrated and not yet very touristic. Which makes it the perfect destination for your next adventure in Korea.

Geoje is a gorgeous island in the southern part of South Korea. It consists of many large and small islands with a blue coastline and charming landscapes. The island is connected to Busan by an 8.2 km long bridge and a tunnel under the sea which makes it very convenient to travel there.

Geoje is actually the 2nd biggest island in Korea after Jeju. The island is ideal for discovering Korean nature as there are many trails through the mountains. In spring, some places turn pink when the azaleas are in bloom, offering superb scenery. Geoje also has very pleasant beaches for swimming, some with fine sand, others with pebbles.

Our trip to Geoje was actually one of our most memorable ones in South Korea. We truly love this place.

4. Take the ferry from Mokpo to Jeju

While taking a flight to Jeju island is the fastest way to get there ( see best prices here ), going there by ferry has the advantage that you can take your own car with you on the ferry and save a lot of money on the car rental.

It’s also a more pleasant way to travel to Jeju, as you can admire the beautiful sea on the way there. It’s also a good time to embrace slow travel ( to book your ferry, click here ).

In conclusion – is Mokpo worth a visit?

If it wasn’t to take the ferry to Jeju, we wouldn’t have known about Mokpo. However, we were pleasantly surprised with what the city has to offer.

The highlight of our visit to Mokpo was certainly taking the Cable Car and visiting the Gatwabi Rocks. But there are many other great places to visit as described in this post.

We wouldn’t necessarily go to Mokpo just to visit this place, however as we had a few more days ahead of us before taking the ferry to Jeju, it was great and worth it!

A day trip to Mokpo, a delightful Korean port city

Mokpo is one of the oldest port cities in Jeollanam-do, offering much to see and things to do. The city is also renowned for its scenic view in daytime as well as the evening attractions. Follow this recommended course to appreciate the beauty of Mokpo both day and night!

Sihwa Village & Bori Madang in Seosan-dong

The clustered houses in Seosan-dong, a small neighborhood at the foot of Yudalsan Mountain, was home for the village’s fishermen. Before that, the whole area was a vast barley field. This small fishing village was colorfully decorated thanks to the support and cooperation of local artists and the community as a part of the Seosan-dong Sihwa Alley Development Project. The tour course begins at Yeonhee’s Supermarket, which made an appearance in the movie “1987: When the Day Comes (2017).”

Yeonhee’s Supermarket preserves the old-fashioned look both in and out, from the faded sign board to the items on display. The store itself is like a time machine for those who lived and remember the 1980s in Korea.

Look closer at the murals of Sihwa Alley and you’ll notice some of the artworks come with a poem. These works were all drawn and written by the local residents who live here.

Follow the winding uphill alleyways and you’ll soon reach Bori Madang, which can be translated as barley yard. Before the alleyways were settled with houses, the area was used as a threshing floor for the harvested barley, hence the name.

What was once a threshing floor is now a children’s playground. Continue the path uphill and you’ll be greeted by an unobstructed view of the ocean. The alley on the opposite side leads to another ocean viewpoint called “Babo Madang,” short for “ocean-view yard” in Korean. There are cafés and an art gallery by Babo Madang.

Walking along Sihwa Alley and taking in the refreshing ocean view from Bori Madang are perfect for starting off your adventure in Mokpo.

Sunset from Yudalsan Mountain

The most well-known mountain in Mokpo is Yudalsan Mountain, which has a relatively low elevation of 228 meters. The mountain is situated at the southwest endpoint of the Korean peninsula, allowing whoever reaches the summit to immerse in the panoramic view of the blue sea and the archipelago nearby. The sunset and evening lights along the port are other gorgeous sights to behold from the mountain’s summit.

In the past, the scenic view was a reward to those who had hiked up to the mountain’s summit from Nojeokbong Peak. However, it is much easier now as spectators can take a cable car from Yudalsan platform and walk up the stairway for approximately 20 to 30 minutes to reach the summit.

The daytime view from the summit is beautiful, but the view of the sunset beyond Mokpodaegyo Bridge is simply breathtaking. After sunset, the bridge lights up and its reflection glistens over the water.

Gatbawi Sea Cliff and Tafoni Gatbawi Sea Cliff and Tafoni, or collectively known as Gatbawi Rock, have long been a tourist attraction that represents Mokpo. The rock cliffs were named due to their resemblance of two human forms wearing a satgat, a traditional hat made of woven reeds or bamboos usually worn by men in the past.

The rock formation is the work of nature through weathering and erosion caused by ocean waves and winds.

You can get a nice front view from the footbridge that face Gatbawi rocks. The sight becomes even more mesmerizing especially at sunset when the golden sunlight reflects off the cliffs and water. Even after dark, the attraction continues to present a beautiful sight thanks to the lighting displays installed around the rocks and the footbridge.

Mokpo Skywalk

Mokpo Skywalk is an attraction in Yudal Recreation Area. The skywalk is built to send shivers down your spine with two-thirds of the 54-meter long walkway consisting of transparent glass and steel mesh, allowing you to see right through of what’s under your feet from 15 meters above ground.

On clear sunny days, you can get great photos with Gohado Island and Mokpo Bridge in the background. The skywalk is also an excellent place to view the sunset over the west coast.

A Wonderful Weekend in Mokpo – A Full Itinerary

Mokpo is one of the best places to visit in Jeollanamdo. You’ll probably need more than two days to explore all the city’s charms, but if you only have a weekend to spare you can still see some awesome things. Read on!

How to get to Mokpo

Mokpo has both a bus terminal and a train station you can travel to. It’s best to catch the train to Mokpo from Seoul as the bus takes almost four hours to get there. Be warned that KTX trains from Seoul to Mokpo cost over 50,000 won. You can catch slower trains for half the price but the journey is over 5 hours long.

Day 1 – Gohado (고하도) and Yudalsan (유달산)

It’s best to get to Mokpo early to make the most of your first day. Visiting Gohado and Yudalsan requires quite a bit of walking so wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

You can visit each of these locations on separate days. However, Gohado and Yudalsan are close to each other and you can reach them via a trip on Mokpo Marine Cable Car 목포 해상케이블카) – the longest and highest cable car in Korea as well as Mokpo’s main attraction. So, it’s worth exploring both of them at a leisurely pace on the same day.

Gohado is an island in Mokpo, which you can reach by getting off at the final station of Mokpo Cable Car, Gohado Station.

Tip: it’s best to sit on the left side of the cable when you go up as this offers the best views. It’s worth sitting on the left side again when you go down if you’re leaving near sunset, as the sun will be on this side.

Things to do on Gohado

There are quite a few things to do on the island. The Gohado Yongoreum Dulle-gil Trail is popular amongst locals, but it takes almost 3 hours to complete. With limited time, I think it’s best to visit the tourist attractions nearest to the Cable Car station unless you want to catch a taxi (or walk) to other locations on the island.

Gohado Observatory (고하도 전망대)

The first place you should head to is the observatory. You have to walk quite a bit to get there. When you leave the Cable Car station, walk up some steps and then turn left (you can take the first or second left – they’ll both take you to the right place) to follow the path that leads you to the observatory.

There are some nice views of the city on the way there – you can even view passing cable cars on your walk to the Observatory.

Once there, you can view some on your way to the top, but they’re all in Korean so this won’t be interesting unless you speak the language.

Gohado Yongmeori (고하도용머리)

Once you’ve finished taking in the breathtaking views the Observatory has to offer, head down to Gohado Yongmeori, which gets you closer to the harbour. I’d suggest using the steps near the observatory to get here. There’s another way to arrive but the steps are easier.

This is a nice walk to do as you’re close to the ocean. There are also several photo zones along the way. My favourite was the dragon as I think it captured the essence of the location well (Yongmeori means dragon head)

The dragon is also near Mokpo Bridge and it’s cool seeing it so close, without driving on it.

Yudalsan (Mt. Yudal)

You can see the wonderful landscape of Mokpo at the summit of Yudalsan, despite the mountain’s low height. It’s an easy hike if you don’t want to take the cable car up to the summit.

You can visit several temples, an Arboretum and Yudalsan Sculpture Park throughout your journey to the top (note – you can visit most of these places separately from your hike, given that they’re not near the peak I think it’s especially worth visiting the Sculpture Park in the spring and autumn because it looks gorgeous during these seasons.

Different sightseeing options

Since Gohado and Yudalsan are close and offer lots to see, there are a variety of ways you can organise your first day in Mokpo.

A ticket lady at Mokpo Marine Cable car explained to me that you can buy a return ticket at Bukhang Station (the first and lowest station for the cable cars) get off at Yudalsan Station to explore the mountain, then hop on again to go from Yudalsan to Gohado, but I’m finding conflicting information about this online, so it’d be best to ask the ticket person. Have Papago ready to translate!

Here are a few ways you can organise your day:

Option 1 – Visit the attractions at the bottom of the Yudalsan, walk to Bukhang Cable Car Station, get off at Yudalsan Station and visit the peak, go to Gohado and explore the island, return to Bukhang Cable Car Station

Option 2 – Go to Bukhang Cable Car Station, take the cable car to Yudalsan Station and hike to the peak, return to Yudalsan Station to catch the cable car to Gohado and explore the island, come back and get off at Yudalsan and hike down the mountain to view the nearby attractions.

Option 3 – Go to Bukhang Cable Car Station, take the cable car to Yudalsan Station and hike to the peak, go back to Yudalsan Station to go to Gohado and explore the island, return to Bukhang Cable Car Station, walk to the bottom of Yudalsan hiking route to explore attractions near the mountain.

Option 4 – Hike up to Yudalsan and explore the surrounding places of interest such as temples and Yudalsan Sculpture park, take the cablecar from yudalsan to Gohado, explore the island, return to Bukhang Cable Car Station.

Option 5 – Bukhang Cable Car Station, catch the cable car to Gohado Station, explore the island, catch the cable Car to Yudalsan Station and hike then peak, return to Bukhang Cable Car Station.

These three locations are all located near to each other, so it won’t be difficult travelling from one place to the other.

Erosion over time made the rocks here look like they’re wearing a ‘gat’, a typical Korean hat. It doesn’t take much time to see this unusual rock formation, but you can spend more time in the area by walking up the hill above the rocks, where you’ll see more beautiful views of the city.

Gatbawi is also located in a park, so it’s also nice to walk around that.

Things to Do in Mokpo

Mokpo is Jeollanam's major port city and was first opened for trade in 1897. A rail line from Seoul connected it to the capital region in 1913, after which it became a vitally important harbor, especially during the time when Japan colonized Korea. Vestiges of Japanese influence can be seen all over town, even with the overwhelming presence of celebrated Naval Admiral Yi everywhere as well.

Mokpo used to be one of the largest cities in the country before the 1970s. Since then, it has seen many of its population migrate to more industrial cities. That doesn't mean it's a quiet town, however. The city has plenty of residents and has taken great pains in the past few years to attract more visitors. The high-speed KTX train from Seoul has contributed to the tourist boom to the city.

Since they closed the Mokpo airport in 2009, the closest airport is in Muan.

Between the train station and the ferry terminal is the old town, which is always bustling with activity. The Mokpo Tourist Information Center (tel. 061/244-0939 ), 10 Hang-dong, Mokpo-si, is located at the Yeogek Terminal. It's open daily 9am to 10pm year-round. There is also another tourist info center at Yeongsan Lake (tel. 061/270-8279 ), 300 Jukgyo-dong, Mokpo-si.

A South Dakota city landed on a best places to live list. See how it scored.

Each year, Livability.com publishes its top 100 places to live in the United States, focusing on small- to medium-sized cities, and the results might be surprising.

This year's list features one South Dakota city. Sioux Falls made the list, receiving a score of 741.

Why is Sioux Falls, South Dakota a top place to live?

Sioux Falls takes the billing for being the most populous city in South Dakota, according to U.S. Census data, with a population of 202,078 and one of the fastest-growing Midwest cities. Sioux Falls received a LivScore of 741, placing it ahead of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which has a score of 740, and Duluth, Minnesota, which has a composite score of 736.

Sioux Falls scored the highest in the categories of housing, cost of living, health and amenities, according to Livability.

Nestled amidst rolling hills and lush greenspaces, Sioux Falls offers a unique blend of urban amenities and natural beauty. It's a city that not only provides a hub for leisure activities but also boasts a thriving economy. The South Dakota city has a strong job market driven by healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, while maintaining affordable housing options.

How does Livability determine its top places to live list?

The methodology for Livability's list is designed to identify cities that offer the best combination of affordability, opportunity, and quality of life. The media company partners with Applied Geographic Solutions to curate the list based on 100 data points across eight categories:

Economy: Includes unemployment rate and income growth
Housing and cost of living: Considers affordability and tax rates
Amenities: Covers cultural, leisure and shopping options
Transportation: Examines car ownership, walkability and commute times
Environment: Assesses population density, air quality and disaster risks
Safety: Looks at crime rates and overall community security
Education: Evaluates school quality and educational attainment
Health: Considers life expectancy and health care access

Each city is assigned a Livability Score (LivScore), derived from a proprietary algorithm that weighs each category, with a possible score of 1000. The company looks at 2,000 cities with populations between 75,000 and 500,000 each year.

The final list of 100 cities represents the top 5% of cities within the studied range.

While the list doesn't officially rank each city, these five cities had the highest LivScore among the 100 places on this year's list:

Emmys 2024: 10 things we'd like to see happen on ABC broadcast of TV's big awards

How many prime-time Emmy Awards can there be in one year? Two, actually. The one held this January was supposed to happen in 2023, but it was delayed by the writers and actors strikes. The ceremony happening Sunday night, the 76th Emmy Awards, is the real deal for 2024 and the last one you’ll see until 2025. Got it?

It may be difficult to wrap your head around this, but what isn’t complicated about television these days? The numerous series, movies and specials available on broadcast, cable and streaming are threatening to overwhelm our capacity for content. Still, TV continues to deliver quality viewing like FX’s “Shogun” (which leads all series with 25 Emmy nomination)s, Hulu’s “The Bear” (which has 23, a new record for a comedy), Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” (a whopping 21) and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” (an impressive 19).

In fact, there is nearly embarrassment of riches in the best series categories. Besides “Shogun, the drama category includes Netflix’s “The Crown,” Amazon Prime Video’s “Fallout,” HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” (Apple TV+) and Netflix’s “3 Body Problem.”

Joining “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” in the comedy category are ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Hacks,” Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” and FX’s “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows.”

Since our crystal ball is in the shop for repairs, we are skipping predictions and focusing instead on 10 things we would like to see happen during the telecast, which starts at 8 p.m. on ABC and runs until at least 11 p.m. (or, more accurately, until all of those pointy-winged statuettes are handed out). Ready for some wishful thinking? Yes, chef!

Oh, Canada!

It will be a fond Emmy reunion for this year’s hosts Dan Levy and Eugene Levy. The father-and-son duo are best known for the Canada-made “Schitt’s Creek,” which swept the comedy categories in 2020 for its final season. Since the Levys are adept at scripted comedy, not standup, don’t expect a ton of topical humor or ad-libs. But if we’re lucky, their expert timing and family dynamic will convince some producer in attendance to cast them together in a new series. We’d even settle for spinoffs like “Only Murders in a Canadian Province,” “The Moose” or “What We Do in the Tim Hortons.”

Sloppy joes

In a field that includes Idris Elba of Apple TV+’s “Hijack,” Donald Glover of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Walton Goggins of “Fallout," Gary Oldman of "Slow Horses" and Dominic West of “The Crown," the great Hiroyuki Sanada of "Shogun" is likely to -- and should -- win the lead actor in a drama category. But wouldn't it be cool if there were somehow a messiest character Emmy for Oldman's exasperating Jackson Lamb? From his gaseous emissions and rumpled clothing to his stringy hair, Lamb is sloppiness personified as a British MI5 veteran whose lack of hygiene and callous insults disguise his unmatched skills and real concern for his "joes," or agents. For the flawed spies who wind up in Lamb’s Slough House outpost seeking redemption, Lamb is definitely the boss you hate to love.

'Night' vision

Although some critics loathed it and we’re not speculating they are sexist for slamming the women-led season — (OK, we are) — “True Detective: Night Country” was a moody, terrifying, hauntingly mystical journey into the evil that men do, set amid the gloom of an Alaskan town with many secrets to hide. Plus, it had a dynamite odd-couple cop pairing in Jodie Foster’s seemingly awful Detective Danvers and boxer-turned-actor Kali Reis’s stoic, wounded Detective Navarro (Kali Reis). Haters gonna hate, but here’s hoping Foster and Reis triumph by taking actress and supporting actress in a limited series honors, respectively.

'SNL' Mamala

All hail Maya Rudolph, nominated this year for a total of four Emmys. She won one over the weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys for her voice-over role as the Hormone Monstress on Netflix’s animated “Big Mouth” and lost two (guest actress in a comedy for her NBC's "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig and original lyrics for her "SNL" monologue song, “I’m Your Mother”). That means she still could win for lead actress in a comedy for portraying a billionaire on Apple TV+’s “Loot.” Viewers will be the true winner if Rudolph delivers an acceptance speech while doing her Kamala Harris impression.

Chemical reaction

Never mind the nepo babies slam. Lewis Pullman, the intriguing young actor who played a research scientist in love with Brie Larson’s character in Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry,” has an introspective charisma that is very different from that of his dad, "Independence Day" star Bill Pullman. Pass the torch to a new generation and make him best supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie.

Detroit vs. everybody else who's presenting

Past Emmy winners Sam Richardson (for his guest spot on Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,”) and Steven Yeun (for his lead role in Netflix’s “Beef”) are among the presenters for Sunday night. In our dream scenario, the two actors, who both grew up in southeast Michigan, would appear together and bring out surprise presenter and fellow Mitten State favorite Tim Robinson (an Emmy winner for Netflix’s “I Think You Should Leave,” which has featured both Richardson and Yeun in its sketches). Oh, and they all would be wearing Lions jerseys.

Michigander greats

Speaking of Michigan ties, here is hoping for a win for outstanding reality competition for Bravo's "Top Chef," now hosted by Kristen Kish, who grew up near Grand Rapids. And let’s hear it for our Big Ten winners! At the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend, Michigan State University alum Phil DeTolve won for sound mixing for a variety series or special for CBS’ “Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden.” University of Michigan grads Benj Pasek and Justin Paul also took home Emmys original music and lyrics for “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from “Only Murders in the Building” –and became EGOTs in the process. Last but not least, U-M (and North Farmington High) alum Kelly Lyon won for picture editing for variety programming for her work on Netflix’s “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in L.A.”

Chef's kiss

There’s loud emoting and there’s subdued, precise acting. Of the 23 nods for “The Bear,” a show that can be an 11 out of ten on the expressive scale, the performance that draws you in with its stillness is Lionel Boyce’s as Marcus, the aspiring pastry chef who sticks to the sidelines of the kitchen’s frenetic action. In the episode that earned Boyce a best supporting actor nod, Marcus steps back from his caretaking role for his seriously ill mother in order to accept a rare opportunity to study in Copenhagen with a rising young chef (Will Poulter). For subtly revealing how Marcus not only absorbs knowledge, but returns home to Chicago ready to elevate it to new levels, Boyce deserves a gold statuette.

A matter of principal

From its first episode, “Abbott Elementary” could rely on Janelle James , aka self-absorbed Principal Ava Coleman, to land a punchline with the assurance of a 747 pilot. Ensuing seasons have given James more to do, while mixing a bit of self-awareness into her character. Since Quinta Brunson and Sheryl Lee Ralph already have their “Abbott” trophies, please send the supporting actress in a comedy prize to the principal’s office.

Sunday night’s broadcast is set to reunite cast members Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Dule Hill and Jimmy Smitsof the NBC classic “West Wing,” which marks its 25th anniversary in 2024. This is a cue to the show’s creator, Aaron Sorkin, to dash off a moving speech for Sheen's iconic president to deliver on the importance of preserving democracy in America. Let Bartlet be Bartlet!
