Safari-Themed Desserts

  • November 1, 2020

We’ve found that Safari-themed desserts are super popular right now, which is great news for us! They are a favorite of ours at 12 Oaks Desserts for many reasons. Not only are there so many animals to design around, but there are also many directions one could take the design aesthetic. From cute little cake pop animals, perhaps in a cartoon style or maybe a more realistic likeness to classic animal prints, really the sky’s the limit. Certainly, the purpose of the event helps to steer the design, whether it’s a child’s birthday party or baby shower, or even a fun bachelorette party theme. Here are a few of our favorite Safari-themed creations that we wanted to share with you!

Classic Safari Cake Pops

Safari Animal Cakepops

Our Safari Cake Pops have been a staple at 12 Oaks Desserts since our early days in Manhattan. When we originally designed these cake pops, we wanted to make a perfectly adorable cake pops for little ones’ birthday parties, and (if we do say so ourselves) we feel like we nailed the cute part. We also wanted to create something that didn’t rely on fondant for the detailing. Our classic Safari Cake Pops include 3 animal variations: lions, monkeys, and tigers (oh my!). Our favorite part to create is the lion’s mane. Here’s the secret, we use shredded coconut! Add some to a ziplock bag, add a little food coloring – we like to use orange and yellow and not mix it lightly so you still get variations on the mane. We used M&Ms for the nose and then edible marker for the rest. For the monkeys, we used a light brown candy melt for the mouth, and then the rest is chocolate chips in different sizes and flavors (butterscotch for the light brown).

Safari Animal Cakepops Wrapped

While we love the little safari gang we’ve created, we’re always up for a challenge and are happy to create new Safari animals to join the party upon request. In fact, we once created a dessert table for a Lion King-themed birthday party and included some Timon and Pumba cake pops that turned out to be super cute too! We loved making those fondant warthog tusks for Pumba! Yes, this one definitely needed fondant for the details!

Timon & Pumba Cakepops

Safari Print Cake Pops

Well, Vogue called it last year: Animal print is making a come-back. And we must admit, we’re very excited about embracing this trend. We first made animal print cake pops years ago and tried out a new edible paint we’d just gotten in the mail. Sadly, it didn’t dry on the chocolate (even after 24 hours). And this is why you should never experiment with new products on actual orders. Lesson learned! We had to redo them and then we used melted chocolate to pipe or “paint” the designs. We recently had the chance to create some again for a special bachelorette party and we were very pleased with how these turned out (now that we knew what we were doing). These cake pops do require some time and patience, as piping the melted chocolate can be a bit tedious. Our favorite was the tiger print — so cool!

Animal Print Cakepops

Custom Cakes: Safari Baby Shower Cake

Safari Baby Shower Cake

Another of our favorite Safari-themed orders was a custom cake for a Safari-themed baby shower. The client provided the color scheme and asked for a two-tiered cake to serve 45 guests. That was it! The rest was up to us. Sometimes it’s even harder to create a design when the sky’s the limit because we always have so many ideas! We’ve always been inspired by Bon Vivant’s cakes in Chicago and wanted to create something similar, but with our own spin on it. We knew we wanted to use the bold colors in the flowers, but still wanted pops of color on the actual cake. We used a palette knife to paint on splashes of the teal blue buttercream which we then accented with edible gold leaf. We added some macarons because they’re just so yummy and fun. And finally, we spray painted little safari animal figures with edible gold paint to tie in the whole safari theme.

We love that animal print and safari-themes are still going strong. We can’t wait to see what new safari-themed desserts clients are in need of next. Maybe some elephant or giraffe cake pops? So if you’re thinking of going safari for your next party or event, be sure to reach out to us on our custom ordering page so we can start brainstorming together!

Yours sweetly,

Never Miss a Post!

Smash cakes are typically a smaller, homemade cake specially made for the guest of honor. After the proud parents help blow out the candle, let the one year old celebrate their special day with their own cake. It’s completely up to them if they play with it or eat it, but this way it saves plenty of birthday cake for the other guests to enjoy.

Jungle Animals Cake (A Safari Themed Cake)

Published: Oct 3, 2020 · Modified: Mar 13, 2024 by Priya Maha

Learn how to make jungle animals cake with this decorating guide. This 1st birthday cake was made in 3 tiers and decorated with cute handmade fondant animals including a little monkey literally swinging on a lovely 3D fondant tree topper.

Poster for a 3 tier jungle themed cake with fondant animal toppers.

I made this jungle animals cake for a 1-year old boy’s birthday. The party theme was centered around jungle animals and the mother requested me to design a cake to match the theme in green and yellow. So I made sure to have those 2 colors as the main ones on the cake. She also requested that the birthday boy is represented with a monkey topper!

🧾Supplies Required

👩‍🍳how to make, ❤️more tutorials you will love.

  • Cake – this was a 3 tier cake measuring 6 inches, 9 inches and 12 inches in diameter. And each tier was 4 inches high. I cannot recall the cake recipes I used for each of the tiers, but they were all from  my cake recipes collection here.
  • Buttercream  – Each tier of the cake was filled with buttercream. I also used buttercream to crumb coat each cake tier before covering them with fondant.
  • Fondant – I used  Satin Ice for the entire project. Some were ready to use colors namely pastel yellow, chocolate brown, yellow, orange, green, blue, white, pink, red and black. I also used food colors to tint white into navy blue (using  Americolor Navy Blue  ), light green (using  Americolor Avocado  ).
  • Shortening and  fondant glue  – I used these interchangeably, shortening for smaller lighter fondant pieces and the glue for heavier ones.
  • Gold Dust  and  lemon extract   – I mixed these to form edible gold paint for the crown on the monkey.
  • Green petal dust  - I used this to give more depth to the tree trunks on the cake.
  • Floral wire – These were to make the 3D trees on the cake, the monkey’s hands, legs and tail as well as the string on the balloon held by the elephant. I used  18 gauge  for the trunk (about 3 for the trunk and used thinner gauge wires for the branches. I joined these wires to the 18 gauge wires with brown floral tape). As for the monkey and the balloon, I used 24 gauge  .
  • Brown Floral Tape
  • Styrofoam balls  – these measured about 3 cm in diameter and were used as the base for 2of the animals, i.e., the elephant and lion.
  • Extruder tool  – I used this for the cake border as well as the vines, and borders for the plaques on the cake.
  • Plunger cutters in  oval  ,  round  ,  5 petal flowers  ,  star  and  hearts   – the oval ones were mainly for the leaves on the tree, round for the polka dots on the second tier, 5-petal flowers for the leaves base on the smaller tree, stars for the lion’s party hat and heart for the 2 Red hearts on the plaques.
  • Gerbera daisy petal cutter  – I used this to make the lion’s mane.
  • Clikstix Groovy Alphabet Cutters
  • Plaque cutters   – I used one for the birthday boy’s name and the other for the words, ‘Our Prince is 1’.
  • Scalloped round cutter set   – I used the smallest cutter for the larger 3D tree on the cake.
  • Pizza cutter  – this was a general cutting tool
  • Needle Tool  – This was mostly to mark the trunk grain pattern on the 3D tree trunks.
  • Sugar Craft Knife
  • Fondant shaping tools   – these were used to help in shaping the deco that was placed on the cake as well as the animals.

I started by preparing the animals toppers first. All of them were formed by hand. And I used one Styrofoam ball each as the base.

There are 2 reasons for using Styrofoam balls. Firstly, it saves on my fondant. Secondly, the animals set much faster. And are much lighter too. This was particularly important for the monkey topper as its entire weight was supported by its thin tail. Having a lighter weight makes a lot of difference.

I had a total of 4 animal toppers on this jungle animals cake – the monkey, giraffe, elephant, and lion. I did not capture step by step images of making these animals, but I do have the close-up pictures.

A fondant monkey hanging down a fondant tree on a cake.

Step 1: Make the Elephant Cake Topper

Mix the fondant - I started by mixing white and black to create the grey fondant. And then, using one Styrofoam ball as the base, I formed the elephant’s body.

Make the head - Next was the head. To make the head, I formed a large tear drop with the tip not so pointed. And then, I refined the tip to form the elephant trunk and the base of the tear drop as the face.  I used the end of my piping tip to imprint the elephant’s mouth and attached 2 small pink balls on each corner.

Make the eyes - For the eyes, I formed 2 white ovals, added 2 smaller dots of black and added thin eyelids made in grey on each eye.

3d fondant elephant with a string around its trunk.

Make the ears - This animal's ears were made in grey and pink. So were the hands and legs. All were formed by hand. I started by pinching out 2 equal-sized pieces of grey fondant, rolled each into equal-sized sausages, and then pressed one of each ends thin. I then used glue to attach the flattened part of the legs to the elephant’s body.

Make and attach the paws - For the animal's paws, I cut out small circles of pink and attached to the paws with shortening. The hands were formed in a similar manner too. And finally, I used my skewer to mark the elephant’s belly button!

Add the balloon - As for the balloon, I made it with fondant but the string holding it was floral wire. I poked one end of the wire into the balloon (I made the balloon in advance and let it set before putting it on wire as I did not want to risk the wire poking through the wet fondant of the balloon) and the formed a loop on the other end. Once the elephant was set and firm, I carefully inserted the loop through the elephant trunk.

Step 2: Make the Lion Cake Topper

Make the body and the face - This guy was pretty easy to make. I used orange and brown mostly, with a little bit of white and black for the eyes. I also used my gerbera daisy mold to make the mane.

Similar to the elephant, I used a small Styrofoam ball as the base. And then I formed the head and attached the lion’s eyes, nose, mouth and eye brows and one ear (the other ear was not necessary as the party hat was supposed to cover it).

Make and attach the legs - Next were the legs. Again, each one of these started off as sausage-shaped pieces. For the top legs, I formed the paws on one end and flattened the other ends thin by pressing them with my fingers.

Attach the paws - For the animal's paws, I used my sugar craft knife and cut 3 shallow lines to mark the lion’s paws. And the I attached the hands to the lion’s body. Next were the legs which were formed almost similar to the hands except that the opposite ends of the paws were not pressed thin. Instead, they were flattened and attached to the body with some glue. And for the paws, I added small round brown pieces.

Make the mane - For the mane, I used my smallest gerbera daisy cutter and made 3 pieces in brown. 1 piece went in between the body and the face while the other 2 pieces went to the back of the lion’s head.  I attached all with glue.

Make the party hat - Next was the animal's party hat in blue fondant. I shaped it into a cone and topped it with a tiny yellow ball. And then I added yellow stars all around it. And finally, I rolled a thin strip in green and attached it around the base of the blue cone with glue. I let the lion set firmly before attaching the party hat to it.

Add the tail - And finally, I added the lion’s long tail.

Step 3: Make the Giraffe Cake Topper

3D fondant giraffe with a bow, sitting on a cake.

Prepare the fondant - I used 5 colors for the giraffe namely yellow, light brown, chocolate brown, black and white. The body was made using white fondant tinted with Wilton golden yellow.

The brown dots on the giraffe were chocolate brown fondant that has been lightened with some white fondant. The giraffe’s horns and mane at the back of its neck were made using chocolate brown fondant.  The black was for the bow and eyes while the white also went of the eyes.

Form the body and head - To make the giraffe, I started off by rolling my fondant into a short fat sausage. And then I continued rolling one end to make it long and thin. This end was to form the neck and the other end was for the body.

Next was the head. I formed a round ball and then rolled it slightly to elongate it. And then I formed another small yellow ball, pressed it flat with my fingers and attached to the front of the face as the mouth. I used my skewer to mark the nostrils and the back of my piping tip to mark the mouth.

I formed the eyes in white and added black eyeballs to it. For the ears, I used my oval plunger cutter. I used my fingers to make one end of each eye pointy and pinched the other end so that they get folded slightly. I attached these to the head with glue.

Make and attach the horns - Next were the animal's horns. I rolled 2 equal sized thin brown pieces into thin sausages and attached them to the top of the giraffe’s head. To help the horns stay in place while the glue dries, I formed 2 small dents on the head with the end of my brush and attached the horns into these dents. That way, it was so much easier to keep them in place. Once they had become firm, I attached tiny brown ball on each horn, also with glue.

Add the legs and hooves - I left the head to set aside while I worked on the giraffe’s hands and legs. The steps I took to form these were similar to the elephant and lion above.

However, this time, since the legs were hanging from the side of the cake, when making the giraffe, I placed it on a piece of round Styrofoam and let the legs hang on its side while waiting for the giraffe to set and for the rest of the cake decoration to be ready.

Once the hands and legs were in place, I cut out small circles (in 2 different sizes) in brown. I attached them randomly on the body. I also attached the brown circles for the hooves.

Make the mane and bow - And then I added the head followed by the giraffe’s mane which I cut using the scalloped blade of my pizza cutter. I attached the mane using glue.

Next, I added a black bow around the animal's neck.  The bow was just a thin strip of black wrapped around the neck and another piece of the same sized black fondant that was formed into a bow.

3D fondant giraffe with a bow, sitting on a cake.

Step 4: Make the Monkey Cake Topper

This was the trickiest of all the 4 animals on this cake. And that was simply because this little guy was to hang onto a 3D tree branch by his tail.

The body had a Styrofoam ball as the base and the hands and legs were all wired. I formed them in fondant and slowly insert a thin wire through each arm and leg and then attached them to the body.

The tail was also wired. And I shaped it into a hook so that it will be easy to hang him up on his tail on the tree branch as well as easily take him off the tree. This was because I needed to take him off the tree when transporting the cake so that all the shaking during the drive does not detach his tail off the body.

The head was made entirely of fondant. And so was the crown (white painted in gold). The eyes, mouth, nose and ears were all made of fondant too.

Step 5: Make the Fondant Tree

I had 2 of these trees on the cake. The larger one on top of the cake as a topper and a slightly smaller one on the side of the 3 rd  cake tier. These trees were made using floral wire. If you see closer, you will notice that all the branches on each tree are wires.

I used thicker wire (18 gauge) for the trunk for more stability. For the branches, I used thinner wires (gauge 24). To join these thinner wire to the trunk, I used brown floral tape. I also used the tape to tape the branches that were coming out of the tree truck together.

Fondant tree on the side of a green cake.

For the wood grain pattern on the trunks, I used my needle tool and drew the pattern by hand. And then I dusted it with dark green petal dust.

As for the leaves, I cut out green pieces of round scalloped pieces (using the smallest cutter in my scalloped cutter set. I used my 5-petal flower plunger cutter for the smaller tree) and glued 2 pieces together randomly on the wire branches (with the wire branches sandwiched in between).

And then I used my oval plunger cutter for the leaves in a few different shades of green. I attached the leaves randomly on the scalloped pieces.

I also attached yellow flowers on the tree. These were made using my small flower plunger cutter.

Fondant tree on the side of a green cake.

Step 6: Bake the Cakes

Once all the cakes were baked and have cooled down, I leveled, filled and crumb coated them with buttercream. And then covered I them with fondant.

The first and third tiers were in green (Americolor Avocado food color mixed with white fondant) while the second tier was in pastel yellow. And then, I stacked them all up.

Step 7: Attach the Birthday Boy's Name

Next was the fun part i.e., the decoration. I started by putting up the birthday boy’s name and all other lettering on the cake. For the plaques on the second tier, I used plaque cutters. The wooden planks on the 3 rd  tier were strips of chocolate brown. I cut these by hand.

Once the lettering was all done and attached to the cake, I completed the second tier decorations by adding a white fondant ribbon all around the tier.

To frame the white plaques and the fondant ribbon around the cake, I used my extruder tool to pipe thin rolls of brown. I attached this as the border, with shortening. And then I finished off the second tier with green polka dots using my circle plunger cutter and green border (piped using the extruder tool).

"our prince is 1" fondant plaque on a cake

Step 8: Attach the Trees to the Cake

For the third tier, I started by attaching the tree on the side first.  I used glue so that the tree would stick securely to the side of the cake as well as the cake board. And then I used my extruder tool to pipe the vines around the top edge of the cake. I piped these in brown and green.

And then I added the leaves in random order in a combination of green tones and yellow. I did the same for the top tier. I also added the leaves on the cake board.

Step 9: Attach the Grass Border

And finally, I added the grass borders for both tiers. I rolled and cut my green fondant into long strips and used the pizza cutter to form the grass.

Fondant grass on the sides of a green cake.

Step 10: Add a Tiny Cake with Candle Topper

Next was the tiny birthday cake on the top tier. I made this by hand with light blue fondant shaped into a tiny cake. And then I added the white icing on top in white, followed by the handmade candle.

After the cake, I attached the larger tree on the first tier. Since the trunk consisted of a number of wires grouped together, it was convenient to use the extra wire at the base to hold the tree in place on the cake. I did not poke the entire group of wires into the cake. I only used 2 and cut off the rest.

And the two that went into the cake were inserted into lollipop sticks first so that there was no direct contact of the wires with the cake.

Step 11: Attach the Fondant Animal Toppers

And finally, I added the animals. I did this at the party venue which means I transported the cake and the animals separately.

All the animals were glued to the cake except for the monkey which was left hanging on the branch by its tail.

And that's my jungle animals birthday cake.

This is what Danielle shared about styling the party:

“Well… I had no choice but to throw an epic first birthday for my son. Initially, I wanted to just order pizza and toss everyone in the pool. But the closer it got to his party, the more people kept asking me what I was doing for his first birthday. Everyone knows I’m an event planner, so the expectation immediately went through the roof!! Long story short… there was no pizza. Instead!!! Luka got a jungle safari themed first birthday party! The inspiration came from the event space. I wanted to add to the space and not overpower it. I also wanted to make sure that it was kid-friendly. So I created a fun spread outside for them which included a ball pit, lawn games, a safari tent, an ice cream cart and much more!”

Must-Have Safari Delicacies – South African Snacks

Five south african specialties you’ll wish you had at home.

south african snacks

You’ve booked your safari vacation to Africa, with South Africa as your preferred destination. Well, there is more to safaris than big-game encounters and luxury lodges. To make the most of the opportunity, we encourage Guests to open their minds and tastebuds to the flavors and culture waiting for you. Here are five of our top treats to try on safari—and how to do it like a local!

South African Snacks

South Africans love meat—with many ranking biltong as their favorite. Biltong is a dry, cured, and spiced meat that has a rich history. At the lodge and on game-drive drink breaks, your ranger will most likely offer you sliced biltong or dry wors sticks (imagine dry sausage); they are delicious and pair with beer or wine perfectly.

south african snack biltong

Today, biltong is made from a variety of animals including buck, you are likely to encounter kudu biltong and impala biltong in most South African establishments. Each lodge will offer their unique flavors and spices, and if you are lucky, they may have other less common biltong (zebra, wildebeest, blesbok etc). Try them all. We have never been left disappointed.

Amarula is a creamy liqueur made from the African marula, or elephant tree. The flavors are rich, creamy, and, although some describe it as akin to Baileys, it does have a very unique, African flavor profile. Drink it over crushed ice with dessert and you can’t go wrong.

south african alcohol amarula

Outside Wild Top Tip: Ask your ranger or guide to add a shot of amarula to your morning coffee in place of milk or creamer. The result is a perfect morning pick-me-up with a kick. The best part, it is common practice, so it is not frowned upon one bit.

How do we begin to describe rusks? They are what appears to be a stale cake and easily overlooked but are absolutely delicious when you eat them correctly. A technique for eating food, who knew?!

Rusks are available in multiple flavors, from bran to wholewheat, buttermilk, and more. These cube-shaped chunks of dried cake are designed for dunking. Dunk them in your coffee, dunk them in your tea; hell, dunk them in your amarula. The key is to dunk them enough to soften the rusk and absorb as much flavor as possible from the drink. It is a local feel-good combo. You may not want to try it initially, but we know you’ll be reaching for more.

Melktert (Milk Tart)

Melktert is the Afrikaans word (South African language similar to Dutch) for Milk Tart. Melktert is a traditional Afrikaaner dessert made with a sweet, crust pastry and custard filling. The milk ratio is higher in melktert than in traditional custard tarts and is considered a South African Snacks’ family-pleaser. The dessert is finished with a sprinkling of cinnamon and there you have it. If you get a chance, sample as many different melktert recipes as possible. Each and every chef—home cooks, too—will have their own secret to the perfect melktert. The best ones, we believe, are sweet and sticky and hold their shape when cut in slices…but only just.

Boerewors and Pap

Boerewors is a spicy sausage, flavored not dissimilarly to biltong and dry wors. The Boerewors recipe is a closely guarded secret and households seem to hold sway if their ‘wors’ recipe is better than others. South Africans eat boerewors on bread rolls as a hotdog or, very often, with pap and sauce. Either combination is delicious, and both are worth a try.

south africa bush safari

Boerewors is always cooked on an open fire and it is served on safari at all mealtimes. On one of your safari evenings, you will most likely get to experience a boma dinner. This outdoor meal is served under the stars and always offers boerewors. If you haven’t tasted this delicacy, make sure you do…even as a starter. Our mouths are watering just writing about it.

There you have it: five top South African Snacks to try on safari. Of course, there are more—bobotie, malva pudding, vegetable chakalaka etc.—and if you feel that we have missed one, leave a comment . In future articles we will give you some of our favorite recipes and maybe some ‘how-to videos.’

Sky's Barbie theme night reflects Angel Reese's impact on WNBA

Friday night was the latest in a long line of examples of how reese is leveraging her brand..

Angel Reese had her 23rd double-double Friday night, setting a WNBA rookie record.

Wintrust Arena turned pink Friday for the Sky’s Barbie theme night, with seats covered in pink rally towels for attendees in Barbie-inspired looks to wave.

The night, which included a pregame panel and numerous in-game activities and giveaways, was designed to celebrate women in sports. And there was no ignoring one woman’s impact in particular: Sky rookie forward Angel Reese.

Before she was dubbed “Chi-Town Barbie,” Reese was the “Bayou Barbie” at LSU.

“I didn’t know what my expectations were when coming to Chicago,” Reese said. “[I planned to] come in and be a rookie, enjoy every moment and get better every day, but being able to see off the court how much I’ve been able to impact the community, how the Sky has embraced me so much . . . I haven’t seen a lot of organizations where they incorporate who somebody is off the court.”

This week, Reese launched a podcast, “Unapologetically,” which she’ll host, chatting with special guests. A new episode is due every Thursday.

Last week, she began a collaboration with Reebok and a partnership with Reese’s candy, inspired in part by her fans referring to themselves as “Reese’s Pieces.”

“Reebok has stood on business about me,” Reese said. “Everything I wanted creative control over, I’ve gotten. [Shaquille O’Neal] told me I was going to be the face of Reebok, and I continue to do that.”

Along with Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, Reese has helped boost WNBA viewership and ratings this season. The Sky’s two-point loss to the Aces last Sunday drew 1.22 million viewers, making it the most-watched game of the season that didn’t feature Clark and the Fever. It was also the 21st WNBA broadcast this season to average at least 1  million viewers. Before this season, a WNBA game hadn’t drawn more than 1  million viewers since 2008.

Carter update

Guard Chennedy Carter missed her second consecutive game Friday because of health and safety protocols. She was the only player who landed on the injury report after the Sky, in response to multiple players feeling ill, tested the team for COVID-19 following a canceled practice earlier in the week.

Players and coach Teresa Weatherspoon wore masks this week as a precaution at practices and on the bench during a loss to the Mystics on Wednesday night.

Asked if Carter will be available to play in Minnesota on Sunday in the first game of a two-game road trip against the Lynx and Aces, Weatherspoon said, “We’re not quite sure at the moment. We’re just trying to make sure that she’s better.”

It’s unclear if she can fly this weekend, but general manager Jeff Pagliocca said the Sky will get her to upcoming games “as soon as she feels able.”

Review: Sabrina Carpenter Almost Made a No-Skip Album With Short n' Sweet

safari theme sweets

In this op-ed, social media manager Jillian Selzer reviews the buzzy Short n' Sweet, the latest studio album by pop star Sabrina Carpenter, ranking, rating, and unpacking the impact and longevity of what Selzer calls an “almost no-skip album."

Short n' Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter is almost a no-skip album. Almost.

The quality of Sabrina Carpenter 's second album with Island Records seems to confirm that the two are in a mutually beneficial relationship. Carpenter's Hollywood Records albums are far from low-quality, but they belonged to a different chapter of her career, one dictated by The Mouse Disney. On those records, until Emails I Can't Send , her individuality was clouded by chaotic groupings of collaborators and little cohesion. Now, on Short n’ Sweet , the singer is doubling down on who she is as an artist.

This album's shining achievement is its dedication to eviscerating men and being horny on main. Despite being betrothed myself, Short n' Sweet made me nostalgic for the whirlwind thrill and inevitable snuff of a new flame.

Carpenter's straightforward vulnerability in her lyrics can be too blunt for some, but her songwriting on this record is an expert balance of her signature brash, unapologetic sexuality and heartbreaking introspection and observation.

While Carpenter herself has speculated that the public and non-loyal listeners may perceive her as “obnoxiously horny” due to her suggestive lyrics, I find her incredibly empowering. She does not hide who she is.

Sabrina Carpenter

On Short n' Sweet , Carpenter talks about sex and is sexual without being vapid or self-deprecating; she made me feel sexy and confident while listening. This album is simultaneously a strong self-introduction to newer fans and a masterful reveal of even more of her personality, humor, and growth as a woman to her OG fans.

As a fan since 2019's Singular: Act II , Carpenter's fourth studio album with Hollywood Records, (Sidebar: Have I known her since the Girl Meets World days ? No. Was I absolutely sat the first time I heard “In My Bed”? Yes. Bandwagoner, I am not.) I find that Carpenter tends to struggle with yearning ballads and downtempo songs. Where I believe she truly thrives are the songs in which she showcases her humor, self-confidence, and general IDGAF attitude.

Apart from Short n' Sweet 's “Don't Smile,” (Recommendation: after listening to this track, immediately queue up “Diet Pepsi” by Addison Rae , trust me) it's difficult to find a ballad with equal or more poignancy in Carpenter's discography. While lyrics on tracks like “Lie to Girls” are particularly brutal and heavy, the music lends itself to lackluster emotion; Carpenter struggles to convey sadness or loneliness as strongly as she does anger or passion, with the exception of the fantastic, emotional title track of Emails I Can't Send.

When it comes to her two breakout singles from the project, “ Please Please Please ” and “Espresso," the latter earworm fails to mesh when placed within the context of the album. Even the aforementioned ballads feel more in sync, thematically and tonally, lyrically, and sonically.

Red line

While we may never be privy to the order in which the songs were created, it does feel like both singles were made specifically with radio and TikTok in mind — which ends up making “Espresso” feel like a jarring record scratch on the track list as you listen in sequential order. It feels emptier, where at least “Please Please Please” matches the lyrical cleverness of her other songs in a way that is unmistakably so Sabrina.

It’s possible that the virality and subsequent omnipresence of both singles has skewed my perception of their quality — but while it feels like anyone could sing “Espresso,” (Doja Cat during the Planet Her era?) only Carpenter could embody songs like “ Taste ” and “Coincidence.”

And, of course, there's the Jack Antonoff of it all. The Antonoff-produced songs — " Slim Pickins ," “Lie to Girls,” “Please Please Please,” and “Sharpest Tool" — didn't feel as memorable to me. While the themes and lyrics are on brand, the effect felt more trendy, running with the current appreciation for pop-country sounds and the ongoing infatuation with '80s synths. The songs written and/or produced by John Ryan and Ian Kirkpatrick, on the other hand, felt more true sonically to who Carpenter is becoming as an artist.

Overall, this is one of my favorite albums of the year. I listened to it repeatedly on a solo 8-hour roadtrip from Maine to Brooklyn and am still cycling through it, days later. What else could we want from music, than to move us and make us feel like we can do whatever the f*ck we want?

Every song on Short n' Sweet , ranked

  • Don’t Smile
  • Good Graces
  • Coincidence
  • Slim Pickins
  • Please Please Please
  • Lie to Girls*
  • Dumb & Poetic*
  • Sharpest Tool*

* I have found myself continually skipping tracks 10-12 on my ranking.

Overall Rating: 8/10

Deductions: Ballads are lackluster. Too much Jack Antonoff.

Tour setlist predictions:

“PPP,” “Espresso,” “Taste,” “Juno” (I have a feeling the “I’m so f*cking horny” line will be a major audience moment!), “Slim Pickins,” “Dumb & Poetic,” “Sharpest Tool,” and maybe “Coincidence” and “Good Graces.”

The Frog’s K-Drama Cast & Character Guide

The deliverance cast & character guide, the deliverance ending explained.

Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for Netflix's The Frog.

Go Min-si’s The Frog is the perfect show for fans of Sweet Home who are missing the monster K-drama’s cast, but the new Netflix series is somehow much darker than Sweet Home ever was. Based on a webtoon of the same name, Sweet Home told the story of a monster apocalypse in which people infected would give in to their worst feelings before turning into soulless creatures. “Son of Netflix” Song Kang played Cha Hyun-su, with Sweet Home ’s cast also including Lee Do-hyun, Go Min-si, Park Gyu-young, and more.

There are plenty of great K-dramas starring the cast of Sweet Home , from earlier roles they had before they were cast on the Netflix show to things they did between seasons. For example, Song Kang starred in a couple of great series between Sweet Home ’s seasons 1 and 2. Now that the show has concluded, it will be interesting to see where their careers go next. Only a month after Sweet Home 3 premiered, Eun-yu actress Go Min-si starred in a new series for Netflix , yet it was a much darker role.

Netflix's original K-drama, The Frog, features a cast of veteran and rookie actors that help to bring this unusual suspense thriller to life.

Go Min-si’s The Frog Is Much Darker Than Sweet Home

The frog’s scariest moments hit harder than sweet home’s.

Despite their different genres and premises, it’s difficult not to compare The Frog to Sweet Home considering they are both horror Netflix K-dramas starring Go Min-si. Whereas Sweet Home is science fiction with elements of the supernatural, The Frog is a psychological thriller. In other words, Go Min-si’s newest show is far more grounded and realistic than Sweet Home . As a result, The Frog ends up being much darker than Sweet Home ever was. Just the fact that The Frog starts with two brutal murders is enough to demonstrate how gritty the series is.

A recent video on Netflix's K-Content YouTube channel refers to Go Min-si, who has been in three original shows for the streamer, as "daughter of Netflix."

While Sweet Home also has a lot of disturbing scenes, most of the deaths on the show are associated with a fantastical or supernatural element. As scary as it is to see a giant monster killing someone, a more realistic story often hits harder because of how relatable it can be. There are no supernatural twists in The Frog – everything is caused by humans and humans only. Netflix’s latest K-drama webseries explores how the actions of two killers impacted the lives of two families, with the extremely violent sequences being only part of the reason why the show is so dark.

The Frog’s Story Is More Disturbing Than Sweet Home’s

Go min-si’s character hides some dark secrets.

Sweet Home is a very violent show in which almost every episode includes at least one rather disturbing scene. Although the visual effects in Sweet Home did not always look great – some of the monsters could sometimes look more comical than scary – the show had high stakes throughout. No one was safe in Sweet Home , and even Go Min-si’s Eun-yu met somewhat of a tragic fate at the end. Still, her new Netflix turned out to be even more disturbing than the monster series. Go Min-si’s character kills her own stepson , a child, at the beginning of the series.

The Frog makes you care enough about all the characters and their families.

The death of her stepson is only one of many sinister moments featuring Go Min-si’s Seong-a in The Frog . A mysterious, unstable character who seems not to care about anyone or anything, Seong-a steals the show in The Frog and is the driving force of the show. Although the deaths and fights in The Frog are all quite violent , the most intense parts of the Netflix thriller K-drama are actually the ones where the characters have to deal with their traumas. In just eight episodes, The Frog makes you care enough about all the characters and their families.

Sweet Home’s Eun-yu Makes Go Min-si’s Performance In The Frog More Impressive

From a strong hero to a dangerous killer.

Having watched Go Min-si play Eun-yu in Sweet Home season 3 just a month before The Frog , I appreciate her performance in Netflix’s new series even more. Although Eun-yu is a strong-minded, fierce character in Sweet Home , she is radically different from The Frog ’s Seong-a. Watching Go Min-si’s performance in The Frog right after Sweet Home causes a significant tonal whiplash that highlights how great of an actress she is. I now wish Go Min-si would play more villains after seeing what she did in The Frog .

The Frog also confirms the actress’ potential as a lead star. While this was her third collaboration with Netflix, Go Min-si had yet to play the lead in a webseries. Naturally, Sweet Home was an ensemble with a lot of great characters played by up-and-coming actors, but Song Kang’s Cha Hyun-su was the protagonist. The Frog could also not have been more different from the previous show where Go Min-si played the lead – Youth of May . I’m excited to see what she does next after two great Netflix series in 2024.

A mysterious woman arrives at a rental home and turns the owner's life upside-down.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

safari theme sweets

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.
