The International Dark-Sky Association designated Sedona an International Dark Sky Place . Only five other Arizona communities have earned this prestigious dark sky community designation: Flagstaff, Big Park (Village of Oak Creek), Cottonwood, Fountain Hills, and Thunder Mountain Pootseev Nightsky.

The dark-sky preservation movement is a growing effort to protect night skies from artificial light pollution. This includes light pollution from city lights, car headlights, streetlights, and other manmade sources. The Sedona night sky is one of the darkest in the country, making it a prime destination for stargazing.

Light pollution from nearby cities can impact the quality of the stargazing experience. The effects of light pollution on stargazing are two-fold.

• Light pollution decreases the contrast between stars and the background sky, making it more difficult to see faint stars
• Light pollution creates a glare that can wash out the sky, making it harder to pick out individual stars

Fortunately, there are a few ways to mitigate the effects of light pollution when stargazing in Sedona.

• Try to view the sky away from city lights
• Use binoculars or a  telescope  to get a closer look at the stars
• Give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness by avoiding bright lights before stargazing

By following these tips, you can enjoy the night sky Sedona offers, despite light pollution.

Make sure you check the moon phase before heading out. When there’s a full moon, it will also cause some light pollution.

A Word of Caution

In case you’re planning your trip during Sedona’s monsoon season, which lasts from June to August, please check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Flash floods can happen on trails and the road, so it’s important to stay safe during your Sedona AZ stargazing trip.

The Aerie Trailhead is located at 340 Aerie Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336. This spot, about a 20-minute drive from the Doe Mountain trail, is perfect for a night-time outing when you’re looking for a spectacular view of the stars. During the day, mountain bikers enjoy this loop trail so beware if you arrive before sunset to watch the changing landscape.

The Baldwin Trailhead and parking area are located on Verde Valley School Road beyond Turkey Creek Trailhead. Park your car at the trailhead parking lot and walk to the left for about a 10-minute walk.

This trail only gains 100 feet in elevation, but the views of the stars against the backdrop of iconic Cathedral Rock make it one of the best spots for Sedona star gazing. When you arrive, spread out a chair or blanket, and take in this incredible landmark all night.

The Beaverhead Flat Scenic Overlook is one mile west of the Beaverhead Flat Road exit of State Route 179. Turn right into the entrance, cross the cattle guard and then turn right to the parking lot. This seldom-used scenic overlook is a great spot for stargazing near Sedona to get a clear view of the night sky.

Bell Rock is a featured attraction about 15 miles north of the Sedona city limits. From the parking lot, Bell Rock blocks all the nearby lights, making this a stop on your stargazing Sedona tour. Perhaps a romantic evening under clear skies? Plus, it boasts panoramic views.

The Boynton Canyon Trailhead is in West Sedona. To get there, take Dry Creek Road to Boynton Pass Road and turn left. The trailhead is on the right side after 1.7 miles, shortly before the road ends at Enchantment Resort.

This place is known as a spiritual mecca and energy vortex power spot. Enchantment Resort offers a plethora of ways for guests to take in the night sky.

The Brins Mesa Trailhead is just a stone’s throw away from uptown Sedona, but you’ll be far enough away from any ambient light to have fantastic views of the night sky. When there’s a full moon, you’ll be able to see the outline of the red rocks in the background.

The Cathedral Rock Trail leads you right up to the top of the red rock formation where there are fantastic views.

Cathedral Rock is one of the best places in Sedona for an incredible evening of stargazing. The view of the rocks and red mountains is both magnificent and awe-inspiring and it’s a favorite of visitors to Sedona.

Beware, Cathedral Rock is the most photographed landmark in Sedona.

Centennial Trail is one of the easiest hikes you can do at night because the trail is only 1 mile long. This paved path is as bold as it is beautiful. As you head down the trail, you’ll find a stunning combination of earthly and celestial views.

Come before sundown and you’ll also get to experience a beautiful Sedona vista.

The Crescent Moon Picnic Site is located at 333 Red Rock Crossing Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336. Crescent Moon Picnic Site offers beautiful views of the night sky with little to no light pollution.

This is the best place in Sedona to see the sunset! I recommend coming a little early to get your camera ready for the golden hour.

Then explore the many trails to find your perfect spot for stargazing!

The Bear Mountain Trail begins across the street from the Doe Mountain – Bear Mountain Trailhead on Boynton Pass Road. You can park at the large trailhead parking lot. You’ll have plenty of space to enjoy some views and stargazing with red rocks in each direction from the trailhead lot.

Dry Creek Road is a long road in west Sedona. While there are no stargazing spots, it’s a great road to get away from the city lights. Popular trails, like Devil’s Bridge and Brins Mesa, start at Dry Creek Road.

There are plenty of places to park along the side of the road, and a few parking lots where you can base yourself from. This might be some of the best stargazing Sedona has to offer.

The Fay Canyon Trailhead is located off Boynton Pass Road. After passing through the tree-lined entrance, you’ll arrive at an opening into the vast night sky perfect for spotting shooting stars! There’s not much to see on the trail itself due to the tree coverage, so it’s best to stay near the trailhead.

The Jordan Trailhead Observing Area is located at the end of West Park Ridge Drive. It’s a dirt road that is usually passable but can be washed out or sandy at times. At the end of the road, there is a parking area with a big field where you can set up to enjoy the stars.

This spot might be the best place to see stars in Sedona. Read my dedicated article about the Jordan Trailhead Observing Area .

Marg’s Draw Trailhead is a short out-and-back trail that runs through the Munds Mountain Wilderness. You’ll notice Snoopy Rock catching fantastic late evening sun thanks to its location.

As the trail tapers off toward the North, you’ll run into Huckaby Trail and Broken Arrow Trail. After midnight, this is an excellent location for views of the stars.

You will find Merry Go Round Rock off Schnebly Hill Road way up in the mountains. It’s a great place to go to escape the lights found in Sedona.

Make sure you bring a flashlight so you can make your way around without getting lost. It’s one of the best places around to stargaze!

The Thunder Mountain Trailhead is at the end of Thunder Mountain Road in West Sedona. Most tourists come here to watch the sunset, but it’s a great place for stargazing.

From here, you can also see views of Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park, a 24-acre park that offers a place for meditation amid Sedona’s iconic red rocks

You’ll come for a captivating sunset at Thunder Mountain, but you’ll stay for the unforgettable 360˚ view of the Sedona starscape.

The Turkey Creek Trailhead is located on Verde Valley School Road just south of Sedona, near Red Rock State Park. This seldom-used trail offers rare views and interesting geology.

It can get steep in some sections, so you’re best to avoid getting stuck in the dark. My advice would be to enjoy the stargazing from the trailhead.

The Two Trees Observing Area is just off State Highway 89A, near the intersection of Forest Road 525A and Forest Road 761B, roughly 10 miles southwest of downtown Sedona.

If you've ever been "catfished", then be prepared to be "starfished". Dots in the sky, seen easy with the eye, enjoy the high school soccer field.

We signed up for a tour in early November. We made sure that the moon wasn't going to be up at this time for the tour. We wanted to see a lot of objects. I am sure that they would still have a great tour if the moon were there, but it was REALLY dark. The weather was super clear and there were so many stars! The weather and being properly dressed really can make this great or not. Dress warm. They brought blankets. The tour had about 27 people with Chris as the guide with an assistant. Chris did a great job explaining what we would see. Very engaging tour. I think we saw 5 different objects. Nebula, star cluster, galaxy, Saturn and Jupiter. Chris had a laser pointer that was incredible to point out what we were looking at, constellations and other points. Lots of meteors. The images were really good, but level set, this isn't the Hubble. Yet, able to see the details really well. Only draw back is that it is expensive. Worth it, but would have liked to maybe see two more objects.

What an amazing night we had!!! Our guide Christopher was a well of information. Absolutely must do while in Sedona!!!

So much fun. The goggles were great. Got to see many stars, Saturn, the milky way and numerous satellites. they provided us with blankets and chairs. Would definitely recommend. Just a fun night and the gentleman giving tour was super nice and knowledgeable

9 out of 10. Very informative, very friendly staff. There were 6 telescopes and about 5 people per telescope, didn't feel like it was too much. We had enough time to view everything. The staff answered everyone's questions. Gave it 4 stars because I wish we could've had at least 1 picture of what we saw. All we have are our memories, also the price is a bit high.

We had such a great night with Wes and Kim this past weekend! We enjoyed hearing about the night sky that is visible this time of year and saw incredible stars, star nurseries, clusters etc. It was absolutely beautiful and it was so interesting to hear not only the answers to our questions but everyone else's in the group. You really get a ton of cool information and learn things maybe you wouldn't have thought to ask. Their telescopes are so cool and they were kind enough to let me snap a photo of the moon through one of them at the end of our session. I would definitely recommend this experience in Sedona. Dress warmly even if it's not that cold, you will be sitting still although they do provide chairs and blankets as well!

Very informative staff and well organized stargazing overall. The telescopes are automatically programmed and easy to use/peer into. We saw some awesome things and had a great experience. Bring a jacket or sweater as it gets chilly!

Not a bad experience, but definitely not worth the price. The sky is beautiful, but can be seen from other spots. The astronomers are knowledgeable, but no where worth the price.

Phenomenal stargazing with very high tech gps telescopes. Very informative tool with beautiful views of nebulas, stars, and constellations. Highly recommend!

Best customer service and "tourist experience in Sedona, as a local and visitor. The from the GPS guided equipment to the expert astronomers guiding us made the night. Highly recommend Sedona Star Gazing for anyone wishing to "look up" can connect with the cosmos!

Sedona has been designated as a Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association, which means that the city has taken steps to limit light pollution and preserve the night sky. The prestigious Dark Sky Community Designation acknowledges that Sedona and the surrounding area is an ideal location for star gazing, with many places to go in and around Sedona offering uninterrupted views of the night sky.

One of the best places in Sedona to see the stars is the Beaverhead Flat Scenic Overlook. It’s located near Sedona yet away from the light of the city, and offers a fantastic view of the stars.

To get there, make your way south of Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek along the Red Rock Scenic Byway (State Highway AZ-179) and turn on Beaverhead Flats Road (78). Alternatively, you can head southwest of downtown Sedona on 89A toward Cottonwood. Take a left on E. Cornville Road (30), go through Cornville and then turn on Beaverhead Flat Road (78). The trailhead parking area is large and, with its distance from the city lights, it’s a great place for viewing the stars.

Two Trees Observation Area

Another great spot for stargazing near Sedona is the Two Trees Observing Area. This is a popular observation area located on the West Sedona Plateau. The area offers a stunning view of the night sky, with the red rocks in the background creating a beautiful contrast.

To get there, head toward Cottonwood on 89A, but turn right toward Diamonback Gulch on Forest 525 Rd. Make the approach with your lights off, and just stargaze from your vehicle. This is a wide open area with plenty of places to safely turn off. Access to Two Trees on foot requires a short hike on a dirt road, but it’s worth it for the view! 

Jordan Trailhead Observing Area

Jordan Trailhead Observation Area is another one of the spots for Sedona stargazing that gets rave reviews. From the heart of Sedona, take Jordan Road north to West Park Ridge Drive and take a left. Go respectfully through the residential area to the end of West Park Ridge Drive where you’ll see the trailhead parking lot. You can actually park in one of the several parking areas set up for hikers. This location is known for its quiet and serenity, making it perfect for a peaceful evening under the stars.

Sedona and the surrounding communities truly appreciate being able to look up at the stars every night and gaze upon the beauty of the cosmos. You cannot find such experiences further south in Arizona. Here is how you can enjoy a  Sedona stargazing tour  experience:  

When to Stargaze in Sedona

Sedona is perfect for stargazing at almost any time of the year. The only season of the year where it can be difficult to see clear skies is around July and August. Arizona gets hit by “monsoon season” every year during this time and with it comes big storms. While native Arizonans love the rain, it can make it difficult to look up at the stars. However, the remainder of the year is incredible, with Sedona being named one of the best stargazing destinations in the country.  

What to Bring

Be sure to bring a comfortable blanket and a flashlight along with you. You may also want to carry some insect repellent. The desert is cold at night, so you may need to bring a jacket. As with any nighttime outing, you should bring your cell phone along for safety reasons.  

Best Place to Star Gaze Near Sedona

Finding the right spot in Sedona will make it even easier to enjoy an evening of  Sedona star gazing . Here are our favorite spots to enjoy:  

Beaverhead Flat Scenic Overlook

This little-known spot is perfect for stargazing. Simply Take State Route 179 and exit at Beaverhead Flat Road, then drive one mile west.  

Dry Creek Road

This road is very far away from the city lights. You will find several parking lots along the way along with various small trailheads. You can park the car and simply sit on the hood and gaze up at the stars or you can park along the side of the road. You will find Dry Creek Road in West Sedona.  

Aerie Trailhead

If you drive down to the very end of Boynton Pass Road, you will find this loop trail that is used predominantly by mountain bikers during the day. It is far too long for a night hike. However, the parking lot is very dark, and you will be able to see the stars here. It is a popular place with tourists, so don’t be surprised if you find a few other cars here.  

You will find the Fay Canyon Trailhead on Boynton Pass Road. You can park in the lot and take a night hike on a 2.2-mile out-and-back trail, or you can just park at The Overlook which is about one mile in. There are not many people here at night, so if you do not want to go for a hike, you can just walk for a few feet onto the trail. You will be able to see all the stars in this secluded area.

Two Trees Observation Area

At the intersection of Forest Road 525A and Forest Road 761B just off State Highway 89A, you can find the Two Trees Observation Area. While the area may simply be a field, it is where the Sirius Lookers, Sedona’s own astronomy association, comes for their stargazing. You will be in good company; these stargazers know just what to look out for.  

Jordan Trailhead Observation Area

The Sirius Lookers also frequent the Jordan Trailhead Observation Area. This trailhead is located at the end of the West Park Ridge Drive. This dirt road is easy enough to pass through by car and will take you to a large field where you can easily gaze upon the stars for hours.  

Baldwin Trail

You must enter this trail through the town of Oak Creek. It is rather busy and noisy during the day, but at night it is the perfect place to see the stars. It is a 1.6-mile loop trail with many spots to the side of the trail where you can sit down and look up at the stars. You will find the trailhead just after Turkey Creek Trailhead on Verde Valley School Road. There is a small parking lot which should be pretty empty at night.  

Merry Go Round Rock

If you want to escape the few lights found around Sedona, make your way up to Merry Go Round Rock. This viewing area can be found around Schnebly Hill Road and is up in the mountains. Make sure to bring a flashlight to help you navigate your way to the viewing area. This is the  best place to stargaze near Sedona !
