10 Best Destination Trailers – A Fine Home on Wheels

In this article, we will explore our recommended best destination trailers , what they are, who they are for, and an overview of several available models.

What is a destination trailer? 

A destination trailer is a recreational vehicle more like a home than a traditional camper. It is designed to be brought to your favorite location, such as a campground or vacation lake property, and parked there throughout the season.

The features in a destination trailer are typically much more home-like than you would find in your travel trailer; in some models, luxury is the main focus.

The living areas, on average, are much more open, and finishes and appliances are more residential style. Slide-outs add more room, and additional features such as patio doors and large bay windows make your destination trailer feel like a home.

You will often see a destination trailer used as a cabin, residential trailer, resort trailer, and most frequently, park models. Though park models and destination trailers share many of the same features, there are also some unique distinctions.

In 2012 the RVAA defined a park model rather vaguely. A park model cannot exceed 400 SF in size, and the hitch assembly must be removed and replaced with a skirt once it has reached its destination.

Like a standard trailer, a destination trailer is leveled and set up at its location, and the hitch remains attached.

You will need to hook up a park model to water and sewer. Blackwater, greywater, and freshwater holding tanks are not included in the standard park model package. A destination trailer like a bumper-pulled travel trailer has those features and can use the campground hookup or remain self-sufficient.

This is an RV you’ll want to consider for a full-time RV at a location where you’ll be most of the time. Lots of space for large families with kids and pets.

Destination Trailers Detailed Definition!

First-off destination travel trailers are heavy, on average about 10,000 lbs and in some cases even more. They are designed for long stays at your favorite location rather than for long drives like a typical travel trailer or fifth wheel.

Destination trailers are by no means aerodynamic, a feature you would want in a travel trailer or fifth wheel but not needed in a destination trailer.

Unlike a destination trailer, park models can have attached decks, carports, and patio covers. A destination trailer usually has a retractable awning.

They are not as wide as some parks model, which can have a width of up to 8-feet 6-inches.

A park model that width will require a trip permit in order to be transported to its destination, whereas a destination trailer can be towed by a properly equipped 1-2 ton truck.

Though travel and destination trailers have a lot of similarities on the outside, several key differences need to be recognized.

A destination trailer is going to have a bigger height since they are designed to offer more interior headroom. They also may include sliding doors to the outside, large bay windows, and even floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors.

It’s the Inside of a Destination Trailer That Counts!

The inside of a destination trailer is where you will find the major differences between it and a bumper-pulled travel trailer.

Besides the interior height, we mentioned you would find residential-grade, home-like quality materials, decor, and furnishings, such as sofas and beds.

You can expect to find the following in a destination trailer:

• Heat-generating fireplaces
• Central vacuum systems
• High-end luxurious furnishing
• Deep kitchen sink
• Residential size refrigerators (18-cubic feet or larger)
• Residential size stoves and pantries
• Large dining area
• Solid surface countertops
• Solid wood cabinetry
• Larger residential-style baths, including tubs
• Some floor plans have a second bedroom and a 1/2 bath
• Indoor and outdoor entertainment system
• Lots and lots of storage space

Pros and Cons

Like any other recreational vehicle, destination trailers have both positives and negatives. These are important to know if you decide what a destination trailer is in your future.

• Lots of living space. Rooms feel more like home.
• The addition of slide-outs increases living space even more
• Ceiling heights are generally higher than found in traditional travel trailers, which adds to the openness of the space
• Plenty go storage can be found on these recreational vehicles allowing for very long stays
• Manufactured to be parked at your destination
• Designed to be towed with a large truck. These heavy trailers require someone with experience to tow and set properly.
• They are not designed to be aerodynamic, so towing is more difficult
• Due to their height, they may require height clearances when being transported
• Usually more expensive than towable travel trailers
• Due to their large size, it may be difficult to find adequate storage for one of them when not in use

Destination Trailers Manufacturers

You will find that most destination trailers have similar specs, and the difference between manufacturers is the features and options they offer on their various models and floor plan.

Keystone RV Destination Trailers

Keystone makes two models of destination trailers. The Residence model and the Retreat model. Let’s take a look at each one in a bit more detail.

Keystone Residence Destination Trailer

The Residence is a 40-foot destination trailer available with 14 floorplans. Their most popular floor plan is the 40LOFT; as the model number implies, it comes with a loft.

Most of the floorplans have similar specifications. The shipping weight of the Keystone Residence is anywhere from 10,000 lbs to just over 12,000 lbs. The height is also the same on all 14 floorplans and comes at 12-feet 7-inches.

The Keystone Residence is designed to sleep up to 4 people though there is plenty of floor space to add air mattresses for a few more quests.

When it comes to features, this destination trailer does not disappoint. It is loaded with many residential quality features that make living in this trailer quite enjoyable. Here is a partial list of features found on the Keystone Residence.

Keystone Retreat Destination Trailer

Keystone’s second model of destination trailer is the Retreat destination trailer.

The Keystone Retreat is available in 7 different floor plans, including a floor plan with a loft. The Residence and the Retreat share many of the same specifications and options.

However, the Retreat has some additional features and options not available on the Residence model. For example,  you can find the following features or options exclusive to just the Retreat.

• 8-foot tall ceilings
• 102-inch wide-body construction
• Detachable Hitch
• Central Vacuum System
• Heated and enclosed underbelly (optional)

Overall the Keystone Retreat appears to be an excellent destination trailer with many of the creature comforts of home.

Forest River Destination Trailers

Forest River manufactures six models of destination trailers. They include the Cedar Creek Cottage, Cherokee Destination, Salem Villa, Sandpiper Destination, Sierra Destination, and the Wildwood Lodge.

Below is a photo of the Wildwood Lodge Destination Trailer.

Cedar Creek Cottage Destination Trailer

This destination trailer is available in 3 different floor plans. They range in length from 40-feet 4-inches to the longest one being 41-feet 6-inches.

The GVWR ranges from 13,565 pounds for the lightest floor plan to 13,961 pounds for the heaviest.

The exterior width of all 3floor plans is the same at 102-inches as is the exterior height of 12-feet 10-inches.

The freshwater tank is 76 gallons, and the gray water tank is 120 gallons on all 3-floor plans. The awning size for all three is 18 feet.

The Forest River Cherokee destination trailer is available in 5 different floor plans. Like the other models, it is designed to be parked and lived in rather than extensive towing to various destinations.

The exterior length of the Cherokee goes from 40-feet 2-inches to 42-feet 6-inches. The width on all models is 97-inches, and the exterior height is 12-feet 10-inches.

The GVWR goes from 11,543 lbs to the heaviest model weighing in at 11,808 lb.

Features of the Cherokee Destination Trailer

Salem Villa Destination Trailer

The Salem Villa series of destination trailers offer 13 different floor plans, each containing a host of features typically found in fine homes.

There are three individual styles of the Salem Villa. There is the Salem Villa Gran, Salem Villa Classic, and the Salem Villa Estate.

The exterior length of the Salem Villa goes from the shortest at 38-feet 6-inches to the longest at 41-feet 0-inches. The exterior width is 102-inches hover, but some models do not specify the width, so check with the dealer.

The GVWR is unavailable on the Forest River website; however, the UVW or unloaded vehicle weight rating is available. The lightest Salem Villa comes in at 8,679 lbs, while on the other end of the spectrum, the weight is 12,719 lbs.

Salem Villa Destination Trailer Features

The Salem Villa is a full-featured destination travel trailer with many excellent features. The list below is a partial list of features. You can see the entire list of features by following this link .

There are plenty more features, many of which are available only on specific models. Overall, the Salem Villa might be for you if you are looking for a destination travel trailer with a touch of class but simplicity in design.

Sandpiper Destination Trailer

The Forest River Sandpiper destination trailer is available in 7-floor plans, including 1 with a loft. One of the heavier models of destination trailers we have seen from Forest River.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of the lightest is 13,180 lbs, and the heaviest is just over 13,600 lbs.

The exterior height on all models is 12-feet 7-inches, while the exterior width is 96-inches. The exterior length is where you will find some differences between the various floor plans of the Sandpiper.

The shortest is 40-feet 2-inches, and the longest exterior length on the Forest River Sandpiper destination trailer is 42-feet 3-inches.

Features of the Sandpiper Destination Trailer

This Sandpiper is another Forest River destination trailer loaded with features.

From the high-gloss gel-coated exterior fiberglass to the radius barreled interior ceiling, you will surely find a feature on this destination trailer not available on other models.

The Forest River Sandpiper is a roomy destination trailer that offers plenty in terms of features and available options.

Sierra Destination Trailer

The Sierra Destination trailer is available in 7-floor plans, including a floor plan with a loft. On the Sierra, you are bound to find many windows to enjoy your panorama.

The Sierra destination trailer is available in 7-floor plans, including the one plan that has a loft.

The exterior width of the Sierra is consistent across all floor plans and measures 96-inches. The length varies from the shortest being 39 feet and the longest being 43 feet.

The interior height is 12-feet 7-inches on all floor plans. The GVWR is like the Sandpiper above over 13,000 lbs on all floor plans.

The Sierra is loaded with features that make it a very comfortable destination trailer. The features included are very similar to the Sandpiper above.

Wildwood Lodge Destination Trailer

The Forest River Wildwood Lodge comes in three models, The Wildwood Lodge, The WildwoodDLX, and the Wildwood Grand Lodge.

The Wildwood Grande Lodge comes in only one floorplan referred to as the 42DL. This model comes with a loft containing three bunk mats, each measuring 62×74.

The Wildwood DLX is available in (6) floor plans, and the Wildwood Lodge is available in (7) floor plans. To view all the specifications and features of the Wildwood Lodge, you can visit the Forest River website .

Gulfstream Destination Trailers

Gulfstream Coach makes three models of destination travel trailers. There are the following:

• Conquest Lodge Series
• Innsbruck Lodge Series
• Kingsport Lodge Series

Below we will take a look at one of their models only.

Gulfstream Coach Conquest Lodge Destination Trailer

The Conquest Lodge destination trailer is designed to be very much home-like. It maximizes floor space with the addition of multiple slide rooms. This series of destination trailers are available in 4 different floor plans.

Coachmen RV makes the Catalina destination trailers which feature six different floor plans designed for maximum room size, storage, and comfort.

Like all destination trailers, the floor plans were designed to offer home-like comforts for those that plan on an extended stay at their favorite destination.

The Coachmen Catalina destination trailer has an assortment of features that make it a very desirable trailer for extended stays.

Best Destination Trailers Summary

It’s quite obvious that a destination trailer is not for everyone. If you enjoy going from one location to another frequently, or if the trip to your destination is a long distance, then a destination trailer is not for you.

However, if your favorite campsite or lake is within a reasonable distance from your home, and if you intend to stay at your destination for a week or months, a destination trailer is the type of RV you should consider.

The price tag will be much higher than a typical pull-behind travel trailer, but you get residential quality furnishing, multiple bedrooms, lofts, or bunk beds, and much more living space and storage.

Catalina Destination Trailers

The Catalina Deluxe Edition Destination Series features five different floor plans that are engineered to maximize room, storage, and comfort. The Destination Series has also focused on upholding the quality that has made Coachmen famous over the years. These floorplans were specifically designed for campers that plan extended stays at their favorite locations.

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

Since the trailer is going to be stationary for long period of time, a good thing would be to go for a big length trailer. Buying a big 2 bedroom trailer for a family would be a good thing to do.

The average lifespan of a travel trailer is about 10 years while the average lifespan of a destination trailer can range from 20 to even 25 years. Basic maintenance and occasional repairs will increase the overall life of a trailer.

Regular maintenance includes similar things like winterization, inflating tires, covering for snow, checking for water damage and redoing seals on the roof.

Just like other RVs, destination trailers do have high deprecation. They loose around 10-12% in first year and in subsequent years lose about 2-4 % per year. Comparatively speaking, they do hold their value better as they are stationary most of the times.

Towing Differences

As the destination trailers are quite heavy and bulkier than the travel trailers, it needs special towing service.

These trailers are designed in such a way that it offers your all the comfort or home and not much for mobility. They, generally, weight around 10,000 lbs. You may need a dually truck or a one-ton truck to tow or move the destination trailer from one place to another.

Destination trailers are meant and built for less mobility but even then they can be moved easily with most 1 ton trucks using proper towing equipment. They weigh 10,000 lbs or more but even then they may not require commercial towing vehicle.

On the other hand, the travel trailers are lighter than the destination trailers . They can easily be towed by a pick-up truck of any size with ample towing capacity. The average weight of the travel trailers range from 4000 to 6000 lbs. Hence, it doesn’t need a special towing service like that of the destination trailers.

Vs Fifth wheel and motorhome

Comparing destination trailer with fifth wheel and motorhome is more like comparing with travel trailers. With 5th wheel or motorhomes you can travel a lot and also you get good space to live.

Park model RVs are more of a permanent homes with much more square feet area of around 400 or more. They are not meant for traveling and are to be deployed at a location for much longer stays.

Regula traveling with destination trailers

Even though these trailers can be towed easily, its always better to travel with them less frequently. They are originally meant for longer stays and travel only when necessary. Therefore, regular traveling with destination trailers should be avoided.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Stowe is a gorgeous place that is perfect for outdoorsy folks. Nestled amongst the trees, you’ll find great hiking, biking, and skiing. Other things to do in the area include exploring quaint towns, checking out museums, eating yummy cheese and maple syrup, enjoying craft brews, and more.

Lincoln, NH 

Want to put more beautiful places into your east coast RV trip itinerary? Lincoln, New Hampshire is the perfect place for you. This spot features 23 golf courses, an old-fashioned train ride (Hobo Railroad), covered bridges, beautiful mountain views, and an incredible gorge. 

This place is beautiful any time of year but is especially wonderful when the fall foliage appears. The winter activities here are pretty great as well!

Crazy Horse Family Campground  — This super fun and family-friendly campground is found about 30 minutes from Lincoln in the town of Littleton. Guests love the engaged and helpful staff and the planned family activities. Everything is well-maintained, and the full-hookup sites ensure you’re comfortable during your stay.

Acadia National Park 

No east coast road trip RV itinerary is complete without a stop in Acadia National Park . Set on the Atlantic Ocean, this park boasts beautiful scenery, excellent bike paths, incredible sunsets, lovely lighthouses, and some super fun hikes.

This lovely park offers full hookups and plenty of amenities such as a pool, rec hall, game room, and playground, meaning you’ll have a blast even when you aren’t exploring the national park.

Circle CG Farm Campground  — Located near Cape Cod, Boston,  and  Providence, this campground couldn’t be in a better location. Campers love the peaceful vibe here, and the full hookup sites, Wi-Fi, pool, mini-golf, and nature trails make this an excellent place to stay.

Next on our list: Newport, Rhode Island. This adorable east coast town is nicknamed City by the Sea, and the name isn’t the only thing that’s charming about the place. Not only will you find plenty of gorgeous mansions and adorable shops here, but you’ll also get to take in some gorgeous scenery and wonderful attractions.

Mystic, CT 

If we had to choose one word to describe Mystic, it would have to be “ picturesque .” This seafaring town looks just like something you’d find on a postcard, and we adore it. Ships and water views aren’t hard to come by when in Mystic, and the attractions here are among the best in New England. This is especially true of the Mystic Aquarium (where you can meet beluga whales) and the Mystic Seaport Museum (where you can step back in time).

New York City, NY

Of course, you have to go into NYC on east coast RV trips. This is known as the “greatest city in the world” for a reason. The hustle and bustle of this place is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced, and the fact that there are so many options of things to see and do means the whole family will be happy while there. 

If you can come in fall and explore more of the state of New York so you can see the amazing New York fall foliage .

Juliana’s Pizza  — Need to get your New York pizza fix while you’re in the city? Head to Juliana’s. This place is owned by the legendary Patsy Grimaldi of Grimaldi’s Pizza, and you can definitely tell!

Black Bear Campground  — Okay, so technically this campground is about an hour and a half away from NYC. That said, there is very little camping right outside of the city, and this is a great pick for day tripping to see the sights. The heated pool, game room, and playground keep the kids busy, and parents are happy to have Wi-Fi and full hookups. Of course, everyone loves the opportunity to fish and the many sports courts.

Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia might not be as big and bustling as New York City, but it is still an important stop on any east coast trip. Not only does this city have historical significance, but it also has a huge number of amazing museums and some of the best food in the country. It really must be experienced to be appreciated.

Echo Farms RV Resort – This park is not close to Philadelphia but it can be an option if you want to stay at a park in between Philadelphia and New Jersey. The park is actually located in New Jersey.

Cape May, NJ 

Some people may argue that Atlantic City is the place to be in New Jersey, but we happen to prefer the more laid-back and less touristy vibe of Cape May . This area offers traditional boardwalk and beach fun, historic mansions, cool little museums, and one of the cutest zoos we’ve ever seen. Yep, Cape May is a pretty great spot!

Vegas Diner and Restaurant   — One thing we learned during our time in this area is that folks in New Jersey love their diners. We visited this diner on a whim and absolutely loved it! The breakfast food was wonderful, and the boston cream pie was some of the best we’ve ever had. 

Ocean City Campground and Beach Cabins  — A lovely campground with a beautiful pool and mini-golf course that kids just love, Ocean City Campground and Beach Cabins is a super place to stay. This park is only minutes away from all the Jersey shore has to offer, including the many Cape May attractions. 

Wilmington, DE

An absolutely beautiful city, Wilmington might be the biggest city in Delaware, but it really isn’t all that big. Nevertheless, this is a place worth visiting. Not only is it a very green place with an almost magical vibe, but there are also a whole lot of cool things to do here. These include museums, parks, and an awesome riverwalk area that you won’t want to miss.

El Diablo Burritos  — A build-your-own burrito place, El Diablo Burritos serves up absolutely fantastic creations. While the concept of this local chain is very similar to Chipotle or Qdoba, we thought the food was head and shoulders above both places. Their soda fountain machine also offered an interesting selection of all-natural sodas rather than the usual stuff you find everywhere else.

Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay  — Want a taste of the Delaware seashore to go with your time in Wilmington? We recommend staying at Sun Outdoors Rehoboth Bay. This park is the definition of luxury RV resorts. People love the private beach and relaxing atmosphere, and the swim-up bar is a major bonus as well.

Washington, D.C.

Why Visit Washington DC ?

We The Pizza  — There are actually a few great pizza places in D.C., but this one is probably our favorite. The name is super fun, the service is fast, and best of all, the pizza is really good. We love the crust and the swirl patterns they made with the sauce on top of the pizza made for a pretty presentation. 

Greenville Farm Family Campground  — A simple campground in an awesome location, Greenville Family Farm Campground is a great lodging option for anyone visiting Washington, D.C. Full-hookup sites are available, as are clean restrooms with showers. Of course, the swimming pool and playground are appreciated by kids!

Virginia Beach, VA

The ultimate vacation destination, Virginia Beach is the perfect place to soak up some sun by the sea. Not only can you play in the sand and splash in the waves, but the city also has a lot to offer in the way of parks, museums, gardens, and other awesome attractions. Of course, you’ll also want to make sure to drive through the famous Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel that allows you to drive your car  under the water !

They are known for their delicious Eggs Benedict, but pretty much anything from the breakfast menu is sure to please.

Outer Banks, NC

Obviously, you will need to make a stop in North Carolina when planning east coast RV trips. What better place to do this than a visit to the Outer Banks? The barrier islands in the Outer Banks are the perfect place to escape for a while. The lighthouses, wild horses, and natural beauty of the place can make you feel like you’ve moved to another world entirely, and we’re certain you’ll leave the place feeling rejuvenated and ready for the next stop.

Frisco Woods Campground  —  Located in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Frisco Woods Campground is the perfect place to stay when visiting Outer Banks. Here, you’ll find full-hookup, big-rig-friendly sites and amenities such as Wi-Fi, cable TV, an onsite store, a playground and pool, and more. Of course, the fact that this is a waterfront park makes it even more appealing!

Charleston, SC

An adorable city with a special southern charm, Charleston is an excellent example of what South Carolina has to offer the world. The cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and pastel antebellum houses take you back to a bygone era. Tour one of those historic buildings, explore the historic forts or check out the aquarium. Whatever you do here, you’re sure to have a great time.

Home Team BBQ  — Barbecue is a delicious treat that we like to enjoy once in a while, so when we saw Home Team BBQ right by where we happened to be at dinnertime, we had to give it a try. It was wonderful! We loved everything we tried, but the pulled pork and tots were especially yummy!

Lake Aire RV Park and Campground  — Located just 15 minutes from Charleston, Lake Aire RV Park, and Campground is a fantastic lodging choice. Not only is this park in a great location, but it also offers sites with full hookups, clean bathhouses, and a laundry room. Of course, the amenities such as a pool and playground are also pretty nice! 

Savannah, GA

Like Wilmington, Savannah has an almost magical feeling to it. Like Charleston, it’s a southern city if there ever was one, and the historic charm and Spanish moss found around every corner is just wonderful. On top of all that, the city boasts a variety of excellent tours, attractions, and food stops that simply cannot be missed. Oh, and Tybee Island is the perfect spot for a beach day!

Red Gate Campground & RV Park  — A big-rig-friendly park, Red Gate Campground & RV Park is the perfect home base for anyone hoping to explore Savannah. This campground has everything you need to be comfortable, including Wi-Fi, hookups, an RV wash, a swimming pool, and more.

Augustine, FL

Another city with some incredible history behind it and a good amount of that lovely Spanish moss, St. Augustine is the final stop on our itinerary. Considering this is the oldest city in the United States, it should come as no surprise that it’s full of historic landmarks. Not only that, but the place also has a whole lot of tourist attractions that you’re sure to love.

St. Augustine RV Resort  — Located just off of I-95, St. Augustine is the perfect place to visit. There are other attractions that are nearby to St. Augustine, such as Daytona Beach. Large full-hookup sites are perfect for any size rig, and the Wi-Fi, cable TV, laundry room, and clean restrooms help ensure you’re comfortable during your stay.

What Is The Best Travel Trailer With Solar Panels?

With only a single slide-out, these travel trailers by Forest River offer excellent lightweight options with comfortable interiors. From a rear corner kitchen to bunk beds to hidden pantry shelves, this Campsite Reserve line also offers a floorplan for many outdoor enthusiasts.

Two options also provide over 2,000 pounds of cargo carrying capacity, so bring all your outdoor gear! For families, the 26CJ floorplan is a great model with corner bunk beds, a booth dinette, and a sofa. Couples and solo travelers will appreciate the spacious rear bathroom in the 23CC and 25MW.

The 100-watt solar panel trickle charges your batteries, allowing you to use the inverted bedside outlets to charge laptops, phones, and televisions. While you won’t be able to operate a microwave or keep your fridge running for days, it will provide enough recharging capacity to do so in small increments. So if you have full propane tanks and can conserve electricity, the standard 100-watt solar package on the Forest River Campsite Reserve travel trailers will allow you to dry camp for a couple of days.

East to West Longitude

The Longitude travel trailers with solar panels offer more interior space than the Campsite Reserve. If you’re a larger family or want to entertain friends, the Longitude line has floorplans that include a rear bedroom, corner bunk beds, a bunk room, and a huge rear corner lounger. The 310RL feels more like a fifth wheel layout with a spacious rear living area, center bathroom, and front bedroom.

Like the Campsite Reserve travel trailers with solar panels, the Longitude models come with 100-watt panels and a 30-amp charge controller. This helps keep the batteries charged and provides power for interior and exterior lights and 12V appliances. This line’s biggest advantages are the larger floorplans and more spacious interiors.

Keystone Coleman Legacy

• Lengths: 23’11” to 33’11”
• Dry Weights: 4,944 to 6,670 pounds
• Standard Solar Panel Size: 220 watts

Keystone is introducing a brand new line of travel trailers with solar panels in the Coleman Legacy . Power stabilizer jacks, HyperDeck water-resistant flooring, tankless water heaters, and 220 watts of solar charging capability are standard features.

These smaller trailers will sleep 2-4 people comfortably and come with all the basic amenities. Not only will the 220-watt solar package, which includes a 30-amp charge controller and inverter prep, allow you to power your refrigerator for about a day, but the large tank sizes – especially a 54-gallon fresh tank – will enable you to dry camp comfortably. Whether you’re planning a trip to boondock on public lands in the West or to nestle into a forest in the Appalachian Mountains, the all-new Coleman Legacy is an excellent option.

Forest River Alpha Wolf

• Number of Floorplans: 12
• Lengths: 23’1” to 38’1”
• Dry Weights: 4,613 to 8,593 pounds

These Alpha Wolf campers feature a fiberglass exterior, while the Campsite Reserves are aluminum. This provides better insulation but a lighter shell. The Alpha Wolf travel trailers also have large cargo carrying capacities with eight floorplans ranging from 2,000 to 2,700 pounds.

I love the Alpha Wolf 33RL floorplan because it feels like a fifth wheel. Its spacious rear living area includes a kitchen island, dinette, entertainment center, two sofas, and plenty of storage. For families, the 24DBH and 26DBH have bunk beds, while the 33BH and 280QBS have a large rear bunk room for even more dedicated kid space.

The 100 watts of solar power will help you maintain battery power for lights, charge devices via inverted outlets, and power some 12V appliances for a short amount of time. The solar package also boasts a battery disconnect switch, which helps you avoid battery drain when storing your RV. 

East to West Alta

• Number of Floorplans: 14
• Lengths: 22’8” to 38’5”
• Dry Weights: 3,960 to 10,334 pounds
• Standard Solar Panel Size: 200 watts (x2)

The Alta campers are East to West’s premier laminated travel trailers, including two toy haulers and two all-season models in addition to the ten other floorplans. Seven layouts have sleeping space in the rear and front to accommodate families. Plus, the two toy hauler travel trailers provide room to bring along a golf cart, ATV, or bicycles.

If you’re looking to dry camp often or for longer than a day or two, the Alta line is an excellent choice. I especially love the 3100KXT, which features a corner office area with a stable bunk system. If you need to spend a day answering emails or helping clients before you can enjoy hiking, biking, or paddling, this setup is ideal for remote workers. The two 200-watt solar panels, 30-amp charge controller, and second battery that come with the West Coast Package (a mandatory option for the 3100KXT and other floorplans) will provide plenty of energy capture and storage for extended boondocking.

Grand Design Transcend Xplor

• Lengths: 24’1” to 30’11”
• Dry Weights: 5,756 to 6,505 pounds
• Standard Solar Panel Size: 180 watts (w/ prep for up to 600 watts)

Already prepped for 600 watts of solar, Grand Design’s Transcend Xplor is ready to take you wherever you want to go. Each of these travel trailers with solar panels also has a 56-gallon fresh tank and a 39-gallon black waste tank to help you enjoy off-grid camping for a few days.

Each Transcend Xplor travel trailer comes with a 12-volt refrigerator, which runs solely on electricity and has no propane option. However, if you add additional solar panels to the standard 180 watts, you’ll enjoy comfortable camping in the middle of nowhere without worrying about whether the fridge will stay cold.

The 24BHX and 26BHX offer bunks for the kids, and the 20MKX and MLX feature rear kitchens with good countertop space. Whether you’re a family, couple, or solo traveler, this line has a layout for everyone.

Keystone Cougar Half-Ton

• Lengths: 25’11” to 37’5″
• Dry Weights: 5,607 to 8,690 pounds

If you’re looking for a travel trailer line with the most options, the Keystone Cougar Half-Ton is the answer. Already prepped for an easy inverter upgrade, these travel trailers are ready for more solar panels if needed. You can also easily add Dragonfly Energy lithium batteries if you plan on dry camping for days at a time.

I love how the Keystone Cougar Half-Ton line has a floorplan for everyone. If you’re a solo traveler or couple who just wants the basics, the 22MLS has everything you need but nothing you don’t. The 25FKD features a front kitchen, ideal for folks who enjoy entertaining. 

The 29RLKWE feels more like a fifth wheel, with a spacious rear living area and kitchen peninsula. Finally, a family will find the 34TSB’s bunkhouse comfortable for the kids while still including a sofa and dinette in the living room.

Forest River Wildwood

• Number of Floorplans: 18
• Lengths: 26’11” to 38’11”
• Dry Weights: 5,885 to 9,276 pounds
• Standard Solar Panel Size: 200 watts

Forest River’s Wildwood lineup is another aluminum-sided travel trailer with solar panels. Offering 18 unique floorplans, this RV brand also provides plenty of options for all types of travelers. The new 32VERANDA looks amazing with its rear outdoor living space and spacious interior. The 29VIEW is also noteworthy with its huge U-shaped kitchen that offers bar seating and ample countertop space.

Roof mount solar prep is standard, but with an option for up to 200 watts of installed solar panels and a 30-amp charge controller, these travel trailers will provide enough energy capture for a comfortable camping trip, like many other options on this list. You won’t be able to run the entire system for days on end, but if you know how to conserve, you can easily enjoy a weekend camping trip off the beaten path.

Coachmen Apex Nano

• Number of Floorplans: 10
• Lengths: 20’7” to 26’0”
• Dry Weights: 3,358 to 4,500 pounds

If you’re looking for small travel trailers with solar panels, the Coachmen Apex Nano may be your best option. This line comes standard with 200 watts of solar for your off-grid camping. But you’ll find all of these travel trailers under 5,000 pounds , giving owners of small trucks, SUVs, and even some sedans great travel trailers for weekend camping trips.

Even though they’re smaller, they come fully equipped with all the essentials like a bathroom, booth dinette, kitchen appliances, and storage solutions. If you prefer the Murphy bed, several floorplans offer this as an alternative to the queen bed. For outdoor enthusiasts who don’t need the bells and whistles, the Coachmen Apex Nano answers the call while still offering off-grid accessibility.

Grand Design Imagine XLS

• Number of Floorplans: 8
• Lengths: 21’8” to 29’9”
• Dry Weights: 4,674 to 6,198 pounds
• Standard Solar Panel Size: 180 watts

The Imagine XLS is another Grand Design travel trailer with solar panels. These are a step up from the Transcend models and feature fiberglass exteriors, lightweight construction, and versatile floorplans. These campers are ready for all seasons with their heated and enclosed underbellies, suspended tanks, heated and enclosed dump valves, and designated heat ducts to the subfloor.

These eight floorplans have 180 watts of solar, a 40-amp charge controller, and 12V refrigerators. They’re also prepped for additional solar panel installation , allowing you to expand up to 600 watts. 

Like the Nano, they are some of the smallest options yet still come packed with the essentials. You can choose from floorplans that include a Murphy bed, a rear bedroom, a rear kitchen, and bunk beds. I especially love the design of the 23LDE, with the long rear kitchen counter and huge window to let in natural light.

Alliance Delta

• Number of Floorplans: 9
• Lengths: 23’11” to 36’11”
• Dry Weights: 4,992 to 8,253 pounds

Alliance RV is one of the newer kids on the RV block, and its premium Delta travel trailer line comes with 200 watts of solar, a 40-amp charge controller, and inverter prep. Alliance’s solar system is also lithium-ready, making it easy to add panels or upgrade your batteries without rewiring. 

There are seven standard floorplans and two ultra-lite floorplans. The Delta series has some of the longest travel trailers with solar panels on this list. So, if you’re searching for a spacious interior and have a truck with enough towing capacity, these campers might best suit your needs.

All of these travel trailers come with a 10-cubic-foot 12-volt refrigerator to help reduce the amount of energy used compared to a standard residential fridge. I love that the 292RL has a kitchen island, two sofas, a fireplace, and an entertainment center to make it feel like a home on wheels.

The 294RK’s U-shaped kitchen offers bar seating and ample countertop space to prepare meals and entertain guests. This model also comes with an outside TV, the perfect addition for RVers who enjoy tailgating.

Are Solar Panels on an RV Worth It?

RV accessories and gadgets are only worth it if you use them. To determine if solar panels are worth it, you’ll need to consider where you camp, how often you camp, and how long your camping trips last.

If you boondock on public lands out West for most of your overnights, then solar panels are almost a necessity. But if you’re only visiting the local campground a few times a year and have full hookups every trip, then solar panels won’t be advantageous.

These travel trailers with solar panels offer standard amenities that can help you determine whether more panels, batteries, or an upgraded inverter are necessary for you to enjoy your camping lifestyle.

How Many Solar Panels Do I Need to Power My Travel Trailer?

Everyone’s answer to this question will be different because not all campers use the same amount of energy. A family of four will need more power than a solo traveler. Someone who works remotely will use more energy than someone who is going to be gone all day.

A good way to see how much energy you use is to visit a Harvest Host for a night. How long will the 12-volt refrigerator run on a single solar panel and standard battery without hookups? Camp the way you want to camp by running appliances and charging gadgets. Then you’ll discover if one solar panel is enough.

As I mentioned throughout this article, a 100-watt solar panel won’t supply enough energy to power a microwave or keep your fridge running for days. But the type of battery you have also can enhance your dry camping experience. Upgrading to lithium batteries and a compatible inverter will keep your camper fully operational for longer periods of time.

How Much Does It Cost to Add Solar to a Travel Trailer?

Solar panels aren’t very expensive. Upgrading batteries is more costly. So if you want to start with a couple of 100-watt solar panels, this is a good way to begin your dry camping adventure. Because solar panels come standard on these travel trailers, they’re great options for campers who don’t have much experience with solar.

Depending on the brand and wattage, solar panels generally range from $200-400. The biggest expense when adding solar to a travel trailer is the labor.

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.
