Trek26 is a fundraising event organised by the Alzheimers Society

Trek26 is a fundraising campaign from the Alzheimers Society that aims to get people to walk either 13 or 26 miles in aid of raising money for some of the many great dementia support services that they provide. So I if do you fancy a new challenge in 2024 why not read more about how you could get involved.

When does the Trek26 take place?

There are 10 locations throughout the UK that are hosting a Trek26 event. They are –

  • Stonehenge – 11th May
  • London – 18th May
  • North York Moors – 25th May
  • Lake District – 1st June

  • A great way to raise money for a much needed cause.
  • Fully organised events with support every step of the way with fundraising tips and ideas.
  • Regular stops with breakfast, lunch, snacks & drinks provided through the day.
  • Toilet facilities provided on route.
  • Training plans from professional training coaches to help you prepare for the day.
  • Connect with other like minded people. Many of these people have experienced the challenges of dementia .
  • Events throughout the Uk so you’re never far away from where an event will take place.
  • Best of all, besides a sense of achievement, once you complete the route you are presented with a medal & a glass of bubbly.

Good luck if you’re taking part.

I’ll be running, should I say walking with my daughter. We’ve raised nearly £200. Hope to get to 250 before the day

Hello Doris, Thanks for the comment. Well done for raising so much money. I hope you and your daughter have a great day and it would be fabulous achievement to get to £250.00. I wish you well and I hope you have a great day. PS. You didn’t say which event you were taking part in.

This was not a problem for me in my youth. I would have tried to run the half one. I’d love to take part but too far for me now. My legs are too old. My mind says yes but my body would tell me off.

Hello Gina, Sorry you’re not able to take part. I understand, but have you ever thought about volunteering at the event? You would be involved and it’s a great way to take part. For your convenience I’ve included the link to the page on the Alzheimers website where there is lots of information on how you can volunteer at the Trek26. I’ve also emailed you the information.

Just a quick question. I am a qualified mountain leader. Is it possible to become part of the trek 26 support crew? My Mum recently passed away with Alzheimers so it would be part of the walks.

John Faragher

Hello John, Sorry to hear about your mum and well done for wanting to help out. Please follow the link below and it will take you to the page where you can sign up to volunteer at this years Trek24 event.

Good luck I’m sure you’re going to have a great day.

Dolby Vivisol is proud to say that three members of our team have taken on a challenge to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Society campaign, 'United Against Dementia'.

Jane Normann - HR Director, Jo Hobbs - Clinical Manager and Mark Lamble - Service Delivery Director, donned walking boots/trainers and took part in last Saturday's (5th June 2021) Trek26 London .

The challenge, Trek26 London, is an epic 26-mile trek around London. The route starts at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens and takes the participants through popular tourist attractions and landmarks including Trafalgar Square, Big Ben and St. Paul's Cathedral.

Jane explained, "The event was very well organised and allows you to enjoy the sites and hidden treasures of London whilst raising funds for a worthy cause."

The team were part of 1,500 participants who took part on Saturday. The numbers were unavoidably restricted due to maintaining Covid-19 safety measures. Collectively, the participants have raised more than £500,000 - what a fantastic achievement for a great cause.

"One in three people will develop dementia in their lifetime so we were pleased to be able to take part in Trek26 to help support the Alzheimer's Society", Mark said.

Jo commented, "The news of a new drug to target the cause of Alzheimer's was released just after this challenge shows how productive these events are."

Alzheimer’s Society Trek26: South Devon Coast

Alzheimer’s Society is urging fundraisers in Devon to take on a new challenge in 2022 and join hundreds of people walking to stop dementia in its tracks at Trek26 South Devon Coast. By signing up to a 13 or 26-mile trek across the breath-taking countryside on 10 September avid hikers and beginners alike can experience the coastline like they’ve never seen it before.

Both the 13-mile and 26-mile routes will start and finish at Steam Fields just outside Brixham and follow a route that is almost entirely along the South West Coastal Path. Walkers will take in incredible views out across the sea throughout the route including views of bustling Brixham Harbour, the River Dart Estuary and Dartmouth.

There’s never been a more important time for Devon residents to don their walking boots and   go the distance to raise vital funds for life-changing dementia support. Alzheimer’s Society’s services, including the Dementia Connect support line, have been used over six million times since the start of the pandemic but too many people in Devon are still facing dementia alone. Money raised from Trek26 South Devon Coast will help ensure that Alzheimer’s Society can reach those who need it most.

Route finalised for new Tyndall Range trek on Tasmania's west coast as state looks for next Overland Track experience

By Georgie Burgess

Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service has finalised the route for a multi-day bushwalk in the Tyndall Range, on the state's west coast.

The walk comes off the back of the successful Overland Track and Three Capes Walk, but the remote site, while scenic, has attracted criticism for its "wet, cold, cloudy" location.

What's next?

Community information sessions for the project will take place around the state during August and September, with the walk's project director expecting the track to be finished by 2029.

Final concept designs will soon be released for Tasmania's 'Next Iconic Walk' near the Tyndall Range on the island's west coast.

Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) has locked in a track route, and lookouts and huts have been designed for the 28-kilometre, three-day walk.

The track, situated inland from Queenstown and Tullah, will run north-south between Lake Plimsoll and Lake Margaret.

Project director Keith Ryan told ABC Radio Northern Tasmania the walk will start off along an existing four-wheel drive track known as Lake Spicer Track, and will finish at the old Lake Margaret Power Station.

Tyndall Range walk on Tasmania's west coast takes in sights such as Solo Tarn. ( Supplied: Tasmanian government )

He said the location was chosen after an "exhaustive" process following a 2019 report that examined 35 sites around the state.

"The Tyndall Range came out on top of that exercise essentially because of the unique landscape and mix of geology and history," he said.

"[The] juxtaposition of all those elements in one small location that is relatively easily accessible."

Tasmania is already home to the internationally renowned six-day Overland Track.

The Tyndall Range walk will be a shorter trek, with hikers not needing to carry as much gear, Mr Ryan said.

"The huts will be a similar standard to the Three Capes Track, more so than the Overland Track standard," he said.

"Walkers will not have to carry the same level of equipment and gear that you would on the Overland Track."

The walk's location was met with criticism by some experienced bushwalkers who described it as having "the absolute worst weather in Tasmania".

They also had concerns about sensitive alpine areas being damaged by all the extra walkers.

Visitor fees expected to make walk self-funded

The hut-based experience will involve walking 8km on the first day, 10km on the second day and 10km on the third.

The tent-based experience will be two days, one night, with walkers trekking 12km on the first day and 16km on the second day.

The yet-to-be-named walk is expected to cost $40 million to construct, and the feasibility study released in 2021 revealed walkers should expect to pay $576 to stay in the huts and $288 to camp.

"The plan is to develop a walk that will essentially be self-funding," Mr Ryan said.

"The fees that go into the booking system will be directly put back into the management, operation and maintenance of the walk."

The 2021 feasibility study by SGS Economics said the final visitor fees were subject to accommodation capacity and actual demand, with operating costs estimated at $3 million per year with 100 per cent occupancy during a six-month walking season.

The design allows for 50 departures per day, with 30 people staying in huts and 20 camping.

Like the popular Three Capes Track, host rangers would be on the track year-round.

Track route decided

The walk will be constructed from scratch, which Mr Ryan said was why it has taken a number of years to get to the final design stage.

"It is a brand-new track. It's in untracked landscape," he said.

Track designers have determined the best route for the new trail by mapping ground-level features.

"We've done a thorough investigation of all the values and the site constraints to determine the best possible route through that landscape that protects the environmental values but at the same time provides an exciting and attracting walking proposition for walkers," he said.

Once PWS processes the feedback from the community, the project will need to go through the Reserve Activity Assessment process and then local council.

Mr Ryan said he hoped to have project approvals in place by mid-2025.

"We would then get contractors on board as soon as possible after that to start construction in the summer of 2025–26," he said.

"Given the conditions on the west coast and high rainfalls and difficulty building during the winter period, it is a long construction window."

He said he expected the track to be finished by 2029.

Walk expected to bring interstate, overseas visitors

The government announced the search for what it touted the 'Next Iconic Walk' in 2018, initially saying it would cost $20 million.

The estimated has since doubled, but it is hoped the walk will attract interstate and international visitors who will spend up while visiting the state.

"This walk is really about trying to generate economic growth and activity on the west coast," Mr Ryan said.

"The Overland Track and Three Capes have really strong booking numbers every year and demand for those continues to rise.

"I think there will be natural spill over from those tracks into this one as well as attracting a new market in itself."

What are the conditions like?

Walkers can expect to take in attractive glacial lakes, the Indian Ocean to the west and the rugged outline of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area to the east.

But there's a catch.

The walk's feasibility study said "wet, cold and cloudy weather is identified as a potential barrier to enjoying the experience".

The Bureau of Meteorology describes the Tyndall Range as "usually cold, wet and cloudy".

"In response, high-standard roofed accommodation, and reflection and refuge shelters along the track are recommended for visitor safety and comfort," the report said.

Nearby Mount Read receives an average of 3,581 millimetres of rainfall each year, across 216 days.

Rainfall is lowest in February, when there is an average of 179mm across 12 days.

Milford Sound

The study said flexibility would be a consideration in any design of a booking system to manage peak loads and crowding.

The conditions have been taken into account when designing the infrastructure so vistas could still be admired during poor weather.

The report compared the area to New Zealand's Milford Sound, which it said received two to three times more rain.

It points out that visitor numbers to Milford Sound still reached almost 900,000 in 2019.

"Wet places can be popular," the study said.

A number of information sessions will be held by PWS across the state in August and September, with the public invited to view hut designs, maps and photos along with track routes.

History of Novosibirsk Oblast

Over thousands of years, the territory of the Novosibirsk region, due to its location on the border of natural zones and cultural regions (the Siberian taiga and the Eurasian steppe), played the role of a buffer zone or border zone of different peoples.

In the 13th-15th centuries, this land was the eastern outskirts of the Golden Horde. Later, until the end of the 16th century, it was part of the Siberian Khanate. In the 18th century, the territory of the present Novosibirsk region became part of the Russian Empire.

Despite the relatively favorable climate, the Russians began to settle here relatively late. The Barabin Tatars were the indigenous people. Today, their total population is about 10,000 people living mainly in the western parts of the region.

The Barabin Tatars were subjected to constant attacks of the Kalmyks (the Oyrates and Teleuts). Russian villages were also under the threat. That’s why people preferred to settle in the north, near Tomsk. Only at the end of the 17th century, Novosibirsk province became attractive to settlers.

More Historical Facts…

The first settlement was founded by the boyar son Alexey Kruglik in 1695. Later, this settlement became the village of Kruglikovo. Today, it is located in Bolotninsky district. In the early 18th century, Berdsky stockaded town was built. Over time, the threat from the nomads decreased and the number of settlers increased.

In 1722, the Siberian line of fortresses along the Irtysh River was constructed. The locals were mainly engaged in soil tilling, fishing and hunting. In the early 19th century, the famous Ural manufacturer Akinfiy Demidov constructed two copper melting plants here - Kolyvansky and Barnaulsky.

In 1893, due to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railway bridge across the Ob River, Alexandrovsky settlement was built (from 1895 - Novonikolayevsky). Thanks to its convenient geographical location (the Trans-Siberian Railway crossing the Ob River, transportation ways connecting Siberia with the European part of the Russian Empire), its trade importance grew rapidly. In 1909, Novonikolayevsk became a town. In 1925, it was renamed in Novosibirsk.

Before 1921, the territory of Novosibirsk oblast was part of Tomsk gubernia, from 1921 to 1925 - of Novonikolayevsk gubernia, from 1925 to 1930 - of Siberian krai, from 1930 to 1937 - of West Siberian krai. September 28, 1937, West Siberian krai was divided into Novosibirsk oblast and Altay krai. This date is considered the official date of the region formation.

Novosibirsk Oblast - Features

Novosibirsk Oblast is located in the south east of the East-Siberian Plain, in the steppe, forest-steppe and taiga zones, between the Ob and the Irtysh rivers. The length of the region from west to east - 642 km, from north to south - 444 km.

The southern part of Vasyugan swamp, the largest swamp in the world, occupies the territory in the north and north-west of the province. In the southwest, it borders with Pavlodar oblast of Kazakhstan.

There are about 3,000 lakes on the territory of the Novosibirsk region. The largest lakes are Chany, Ubinskoye, Sartlan. Novosibirsk Reservoir also known as “the Ob Sea” (1,082 sq. km.) was created for Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The climate is continental. The average temperature in January ranges from minus 16 degrees Celsius in the south and minus 20 degrees Celsius in the north. The average temperature in July - plus 18-20 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns are Novosibirsk (1,621,000), Berdsk (103,500), Iskitim (54,700), Kuybishev (43,000). Novosibirsk is one the largest industrial, transport, scientific, and cultural center of Russia, the third most populous city in the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is also the capital of the Siberian Federal District.

In the historical part of Novosibirsk you can find a lot of preserved monuments of the Russian Empire times. The Soviet era is presented by numerous scientific and cultural attractions, as well as beautiful parks.

There are more than 500 deposits of various mineral resources in Novosibirsk Oblast (coal, refractory clay, peat, anthracite). Natural gas and oil fields are located in the north-western part of the region. There are significant reserves of underground thermal and mineral waters. Forests cover about 4 million hectares, more than 20% of the territory.

Novosibirsk Oblast is one of the most industrially developed regions in Siberia (metal processing and machine building, food, power engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy industries). Heavy industries are concentrated in Novosibirsk, Iskitim and Berdsk.

The regional agriculture specializes in the cultivation of grain, potatoes and vegetables. Dairy cattle breeding, poultry farming and beekeeping are developed. The production of flax plays an important role too. Agricultural development of the territory is not high (about 48%). In general, it has about 25% of all agricultural land in Western Siberia.

We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
