What does a Dubai desert tour include?

Good question. Dubai desert tours are usually jam packed with activities, but not all tours include every activity. There’s a lot of mixing and matching going on.

So if you’re particularly keen on doing certain things, you’ll want to make sure that’s included in your tour. Here’s what you can expect to find.

Dune bashing – This is when you take to the desert sands in a 4×4 with expert drivers, driving at full speed up and down the dunes.

The air is let out of the tyres for extra traction. A modern Dubai experience, which usually all tours include.

Quad riding – Similar to dune bashing, except you’ll be driving yourself instead of being driven around. It’s super fun and a good way to get the heart pumping!

Sandboarding – Like snowboarding but on the sand. Most desert safaris will include this experience as part of the package. Equipment is provided.

Henna painting – A traditional kind of body art that some tours include. It’s souvenir that you’ll have on your hands for a while.

Falcon experience – People used to hunt with falcons out here, so it’s cool to see the skills of their trainers and the relationships between them and their birds.

Camel riding – The most traditional way to get around the desert. I wouldn’t say this is a comfortable experience, but it’s not one you’ll forget in a long time!

Hot air balloon – Not cheap, but really adds the magic to an already stunning experience.

Seeing the sunset in the desert – Actually magical. There’s something about the desert scenery that really suits a sunset. Luckily there are a lot of evening desert safaris from Dubai that provide this spectacle.

Barbecue dinner in the desert – Many of the tours include a dinner at the end of the day, where you’ll be served food in a traditional Bedouin camp. Some include a traditional performance of music and dance.

Spend a night in the desert – For a complete experience, nothing beats staying overnight in the desert. The sunset is only matched by the sunrise.

For early birds who like to seize the day, this morning desert safari from Dubai is truly an unforgettable experience. Be warned though: it really does start early. Before sunrise, in fact.

You’ll head out of the city and into the desert, where a hot air balloon will be waiting for you to take you high above the sand for one epic sunrise.

You’ll be able to spot wildlife in its natural habitat, including the Arabian oryx, and spot green oases dotting the dunes.

After the balloon ride, you’ll be able to enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast before heading back to the city (to hang out by the pool – that’s just me though!).

Should you do a Dubai desert safari?

Totally! A Dubai desert safari is a completely unique adventure, allowing you to experience the wilds of the desert. Even if you’re only in Dubai for a long layover , it’s an activity you should consider!

Not only that, but it gives you an insight into older traditions as well as newer, exciting activities like sandboarding and dune bashing.

You may think that Dubai is all skyscrapers and artificial islands, but when you head out on a desert safari – just 45-minutes drive out of the city – the natural, wide open landscape reveals itself with dunes that seem to go on forever.

If nothing else, it’s an interesting break from the Dubai city life. You can also do a desert safari from Abu Dhabi , but the Dubai ones are usually quicker to get to.

If you really want to make the most of this unique experience, I highly recommend joining an overnight desert safari .

While dune bashing and seeing the desert in general is without a doubt a fun activity, spending a night under the stars is simply magical.

What to pack for a desert safari in Dubai

While Instagram may be flooded with photos of girls in flowing white dresses walking on top of sand dunes, that might not necessarily be the most appropriate clothing to wear in the desert.

In fact, you won’t want to be wearing the best outfits of your Dubai packing list for the desert, because you’ll get hot, sweaty and (most likely) very, very sandy.

You should opt for loose, flowing clothes that are ideally breathable, and comfortable enough to move freely in; you shouldn’t be wearing anything that’s going to make you sweat excessively.

You’ll also be in the desert, so a shawl or scarf to cover your head in the heat, as well as your mouth when you’re sandboarding or quad biking, would be a good idea.

When it comes to the colour of your clothing, I would steer clear of black or dark colours; that’s just going to soak up the sun and make you overheat. Go for light colours or white. Sunglasses are a must!

Where to stay for your Dubai desert safari

Since most Dubai desert safaris include pick-up and drop-off, it doesn’t really matter where you stay in Dubai . You can choose the area and hotel that best suits your travel style.

I have listed below some great accommodation options in Dubai for every budget.

Budget: Ramada Downtown Dubai   – Overlooking the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain, this is a polished, modern property made up of studio rooms, suites and a penthouse.

Click here to book your stay at Ramada Downtown Dubai!

Mid-range:  25hours Hotel One Central – I spent one night here and loved it. This hotel has an epic rooftop pool with a view of the Museum of the Future (one of the coolest views in Dubai !) and the interior design is truly unique.

Luxury: Address Downtown Dubai – Among other things, this luxury hotel features an incredible infinity pool with an equally incredible view of Burj Khalifa: the world’s tallest building. The location in Downtown Dubai is prime for exploring top sights, and the spacious rooms offer a luxurious experience.

Dune bashing with a 4×4 jeep is a popular desert activity

Due to their often inaccessible locations, unrelenting heat and generally harsh living conditions, deserts are not something we come across or get the chance to experience often – which is why this is such an essential Dubai experience.

First, there are your desert outdoor activities for those with an interest in adrenaline. These include sandboarding, dune-bashing (driving over dunes in 4x4s) and quad biking. A number of more nature-themed safaris head instead to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, a stunning environment populated with rehabilitated indigenous wildlife, including the once-endangered Arabian oryx and gazelle.

Second, a trip into the expansive desert outside of the city also allows you to tick off a checklist of distinctly Arabian experiences. Many tours will include the option to ride on a camel, watch a traditional falconry display, smoke a sheesha and get a henna tattoo.

Your Lawrence of Arabia desert experience concludes at a Bedouin-style desert camp for dinner, with entertainment supplied by traditional local performers, including belly dancers.

Platinum Heritage and Sonara Camp are amongst the best operators that have overnight camp options . You could then also arrange a sunrise hot air balloon flight – a surreally beautiful way to see the desert.

Some of the desert activities have minimum age requirements; for example, dune buggying is for over-14s only (passengers) or over-18s (drivers), camel riding for over 5s. The sunset dinner safaris are a great experience for children from about 5 upwards.

Desert falconry & wildlife

Falconry has been an integral part of Bedouin culture for centuries. Platinum Heritage offer a unique trip to witness an authentic desert falconry display, and even learn the basics. On the way back, you’ll take a guided wildlife safari through the Conservation Reserve.

Getting there & doing it

Numerous operators run tours into the desert, offering a variety and mix of activities and adventures, but it’s best to pick one that is licensed to operate in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, a pristine environment full of indigenous wildlife. See their website  for details.

For the full Arabian experience – distinctly touristy but lots of fun – choose a sunset dinner safari which ends at a makeshift Bedouin encampment within the reserve. If your focus is the wildlife, choose a nature safari.

Your tour operator will pick you up from your hotel and drop you back at the end of the day. All food and drinks are provided, including bottled water. Dinner generally includes an Arabic feast and there is always an abundance of food.

Take a hat and sunscreen during the hotter months and a scarf or shawl during the cooler months – the desert gets much colder than the city after nightfall.

When to do it

Desert safaris run all year round. Pick-up time for the sunset dinner safari is usually around 3.30pm (later in summer), with drop-off at the end of the evening, around 10.30pm. Other tours vary.

Despite the tours starting in the late afternoon, try to avoid the summer months, which can be too hot to be enjoyable.

Unforgettable Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Experiences

One thing that will quickly become apparent if you are planning a day tour or even an overnight experience out into the UAE desert is not all Dubai desert tours are alike!

Whilst the scene of 4×4 crashing their way through the dunes in Dubai might be a familiar one, understandably, for many, this is not their idea of fun, nor the most environmentally-friendly approach to seeing and experiencing the Dubai desert.

Understanding that this rich desert eco system needs to be protected, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve was established in 2003. Covering an area of 225 square kilometres (nearly 5% of the Dubai Emirate), the area was designated as the country’s first National Park.

Authorised Tour Operators in Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is the premier destination for authentic nature-based experiences in the Dubai Emirate.

In order to control the fragile desert ecosystem while still allowing visitors to connect with nature, only a very limited number of tour operators and hospitality companies are permitted within the reserve’s boundaries, and they must operate according to strict guidelines.

You cannot enter the reserve unless you are part of an organised tour group. The currently authorised operators are:

If you are interested in free camping spots in Dubai, outside of the DDCR, check out this camping article .

It can certainly be confusing establishing which company to use when you see an endless list of Dubai desert tours advertised, so we have helped you here by picking out the tours on popular booking platforms Get Your Guide and Viator that are, in fact, based in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve rather than other parts of the Dubai desert.

We have not personally tested every one of these operators, so we’d be happy to hear any feedback in the comments – good or bad – you have about each of these mentioned; we can update our listing accordingly to be of most help to future visitors to Dubai.

A relatively new addition to DDCR is the Visitor Centre. Accessible by standard 2WD vehicles at the entrance to the park, you can find it here:

a map of where to find the dubai desert conservation centre in the UAE, marked with an Oryx

The DDCR Visitor Centre welcomes you to learn more about the indigenous fauna and flora of the Reserve and how they are working to protect the fragile ecosystem of the UAE’s first National Park.

You are guided through interactive displays and audio presentations. Children will enjoy the interactive Arabian Hare guiding their journey, and there’s plentiful information on the native species, from mammals and reptiles to insects and birds that frequent the reserve.

Finish your journey with views of the reserve from the rooftop deck and refreshments from the on-site Costa coffee shop.

Interactive displays in the DDCR visitor centre dubai desert education

The walk-in entry feee for the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Visitor Centre is:

  • AED 35 adults
  • AED 25 kids (5 to 18 years)
  • Discounts are available for Emirates Pass holders and Emirates Platinum Cardholders
  • Open daily 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Note that hot air balloon experiences may mention that you visit the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. They may fly over the air space of the DDCR, but in order to protect the fragile ecosystem, they cannot actually take off and land in the protected reserve.

You will find they are most likely using neighbouring farms as the launch point. Here are some bookable online experiences with views over DDCR:

  • Balloon flight with breakfast and falconry – (approx 4 hours) City pickups start from 4:30 AM in the hope of getting you up in the air for sunrise and a one-hour journey, including a falconry show from the balloon. After your balloon adventure, enjoy a cold-cuts gourmet breakfast before city return transfers . (Recommend over 5’s)
  • Balloon flight only with pick ups – (approx 3-4-hours) starting around 4:30 am for your hotel pick up, its a 45-minute drive out to the launch sites and you’ll get 40-70 minutes in the air, weather dependent.
  • You are looking at a cost of approximately AED 1100 for kids and AED 1350 for adults, on a shared basis. If you want complete privacy and seclusion, their packages go all the way to AED 12,950.

When you look for ballooning experiences in Dubai online, most are subsidiary tour companies making the booking and transfers on behalf of the actual balloon company – eg Nice Dubai Tours or Best Dubai Trip (Via Viator)

Hot Air Ballooning in the Dubai desert takes place from mid-September through until the end of May each year. You will not be able to go hot air ballooning in Dubai over the peak of summer .

Do check out some of the other tour providers below that can combine your hot air balloon experience with other overnight and breakfast experiences.

The licensed operators for daytime and nighttime safaris in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve include Arabian Adventures, Platinum Heritage, Travco and 57 Safari.

Please note that these are NOT your typical dune-bashing desert safari experiences ending in bedouin camp dinner. These are much more sedate affairs with an eco-tourism focus.

Platinum Heritage Safari

The leader in Dubai luxury desert experiences, there’s a high likelihood if the tour is advertised as Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, it is run by Platinum Heritage.

They offer a huge range of desert experiences from morning to evening, as well as camel treks and overnight camping options. Some favourites for day camps that we would highlight include:

  • 5-hour morning tour with breakfast (from 7:30 AM) – You will be picked up from your hotel in town and enjoy breakfast at Al Maha as well as an open-top vintage Land Rover nature tour.
  • Winter 2023-34 they are advertising a unique Royal Platinum desert dining experience with Michelin Star Chef Claudio Filippone, involving a six-course fine dining menu.

Arabian Adventures

Owned by Emirates, Arabian Adventures is one of the premier desert experience providers in Dubai. Some of their advertised desert adventures DO involve traditional dune bashing, whereas other VIP experiences and camel riding experiences are focused on the DDCR.

Please contact Arabian Adventures directly to find out which of their programs are based in DDCR and would suit your needs best.

Several overnight camp providers include a sedate, wildlife focused safari as part of their package – more on these below!

If you’re looking for a completely immersive overnight experience in the desert, these are the main providers licenced to operate within DDCR.

Al Maha A Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa

The most incredible Dubai desert views can be enjoyed from the tranquillity of your own private tent and infinity pool. This is not just any ordinary glamping ; this is 5* and more.

Guests can enjoy the privacy of their own room; with only 42 luxury suites on the site, they are well spread out, and your privacy is assured.

Guests can also join in with communal dining at the resort restaurant, indulge in the spa or take a look at the extensive recreation program, which includes nature walks, camel treks, desert safari, horse riding, wildlife drives, archery and falconry displays.

Al Maha Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Note that this property is restricted to guests aged ten and over – even more of an excuse for an exclusive romantic retreat in the desert!

Sonara Camp

Sonara Camp, run by Nara, offers evening desert safaris, dinner, and luxury overnight camps. The meeting point for that self-driving is at the DDCR Visitor Centre, or most visitors will use their door-to-door pickup service from the city.

The dinner experience runs from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm and includes a sedate desert drive, an interactive hawk show, camel rides, soft archery, live entertainment and a fire show. Kids can also enjoy a movie under the stars.

Those staying overnight will return to The Nest , which has unique luxury glamping tents nestled into the dunes. Each can fit up to a maximum of 4 guests and is fitted with eco-friendly ensuites. Overnight experiences start from AED 2650 per Nest.

Sensational Dubai Glamping Spots - Sonara

They also have adaptions of their program for sunset only and dinner only – enquiries should be made directly with Nara (they’re not to be found on your normal online booking platforms so may have escaped your attention!)

Camps at Sherpa run from September through May and involve a private location set up with all your camping equipment provided for each family or small group (don’t worry, you won’t be sharing with strangers!)

They are ideal for those who infrequently camp in Dubai or are only passing through the city as you don’t need to purchase will the expensive camping gear yourselves – pretty much everything is provided for you, so all you need to do is enjoy your night under the stars.

After dark, bush meals are prepared while bedding is made ready, and a ranger takes you on a night tour to spot animal tracks. Enjoy your cosy night’s sleep before enjoying breakfast and a chance to meet the birds of prey.

They also offer desert safaris, focused on the indigenous wildlife and an opportunity to meet around the campfire, before you’re comfortable return to the city overnight.

A relative newcomer, your overnight experience with 57 Safari includes city pick-ups, followed by a vintage Land Rover nature trail experience. At your camp, enjoy a falcon show, camel rides, sisha lounge, 4 course dinner and evening entertainment.

Platinum Heritage

We will mention Platinum Heritage here as well, but do note that their over overnight camp experience takes place from a neighbouring property, you’re not actually sleeping in the DDCR protected area.

You can expect an evening desert wildlife tour followed by dinner and entertainment. When the evening-only guests leave, you will head to your accommodation in traditional-style Bedouin-style stone huts (all bedding provided and wash facilities, no showers), followed by breakfast in the morning and return to Dubai.

4WD Desert Tour with Dinner Premium Red Dunes & Camel Safari with Dinner at Al Khayma Camp from Dubai | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

4WD Desert Tour with Dinner: Premium Red Dunes & Camel Safari with Dinner at Al Khayma Camp from Dubai

This is the most classic and popular of all the desert safaris on offer in Dubai. A value for money 4WD desert excursion. But how is the tour carried out? You leave your hotel mid-afternoon, one hour’s drive to reach the start of the desert, a stop to deflate tyre pressure and then drive into the sand. About half an hour to 40 minutes of dune bashing in the Lehbab desert area that is known for its photogenic red dunes, then it’s time to try sandboarding, surfing down a steep dune. Arriving at Al Khayma Desert Camp you will be welcomed with Arabic coffee, sweets and dates. If you wish you can take a super short camel ride and pose with a falcon, this is a nice, unusual photo. While waiting for the food you can smoke shisha, dress Arabian-style – Kandora (for men) and Abaya (for women) or opt for some henna painting. You have dinner at the camp, sharing a table with other tourists and watching a Tanoura dance show with the stars above you. Finally, you travel back to your hotel arriving mid-evening. Transportation is always by 4WD, usually a comfortable and air-conditioned Toyota Land Cruiser.

  • Pick-up and drop-off: at your hotel in Dubai.
  • Duration of the desert tour: approx. 6 or 7 hours depending on traffic, departure at mid-afternoon and return to your hotel in the evening.
  • Guide: English speaking driver/guide.
  • Safari features: there are several options you can choose and which can be combined, including with/without dune bashing and sandboarding and with/without Quad (ATV) ride.
  • Price: in addition to 4WD air-conditioned transportation with cold mineral water in the vehicle the cost includes 30-45 minutes dune bashing, sandboarding, falcon experience, henna painting for ladies, a super short camel ride (less than 5 minutes), free shisha pipe, traditional Emirati, Moroccan, and Arabian meal catered by Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant featured in Michelin Bib Gourmand with vegetarian/non-vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks and Tanura and belly dancing show. Alcoholic beverages are not included and are to be paid extra on the spot.
  • Video: the full experience of the safari in the Dubai desert with OceanAir Travels is in this video by Perfect Little Planet, so you know exactly what happens/where you go/what you do/what to expect:

  • Pros: this is a super value for money tour; considering that for a very reasonable amount of money you are picked up at your hotel, taken into the desert, have a sumptuous dinner and taken back to your hotel, it is hard to ask for more.
  • Cons: whatever option you choose do not expect an intimate situation or to be alone silently admiring the vastness of the desert. Dinner and all activities are very well organised (the local provider of the service is OceanAir Travels, absolutely one of the very best in Dubai) and the reviews are in fact really excellent, but you will always be with lots of other people and the atmosphere is 100% touristic. It’s better you know this in advance.
  • Good to know: don’t even think of seeing great Sahara dunes hundreds of meters high. With very few exceptions the great majority of desert areas near Dubai offer small and medium sized dunes tens of meters high; this is valid for the area known as extreme high dunes too. Children under 3 years old are not allowed in a car during shared dune bashing other than during a booked private tour.
  • Recommended: as a first desert experience for someone who has never been into the desert before.
  • Check prices and book with:   GetYourGuide | Dubai: Premium Safari, Camel Ride & Al Khayma Camp 3-Buffets
  • A slightly different option: the same well-known OceanAir Travels agency offers a slightly different version of this desert tour, still centered on the activities at Camp Al Khayma, with different options with/without Quad bikes and with/without dinner, in case dinner is the most simple BBQ dinner; worth investigating, here is the link to check the cost and book GetYourGuide | Dubai: Desert Safari, Quad Bike, Camel Ride & Al Khayma Camp
  • The second alternative: another interesting 4WD tour in Dubai Desert is the one organized by the local operator Ammar Tours and bookable with GetYourGuide | Dubai: Safari, Quad Bike, Camel Ride, and Buffet Dinner , the price is usually very attractive and the level of services is always very good.

Exclusive 4WD Desert Tour with Dinner: Luxury Heritage Desert Safari in the Pristine Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

Photo Credit: Platinum Heritage Luxury Tours & Safaris Dubai

Exclusive 4WD Desert Tour with Dinner: Luxury Heritage Desert Safari in the Pristine Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

By far, this is one of the best desert safari tours in all the United Arab Emirates and one of the best and most intriguing Dubai travel experiences. In small groups, travelling in a legendary 1950s vintage Land Rover you explore the sands of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, the first designated protected area of UAE. After your wildlife drive you watch a sunset falcon show before reaching the bedouin camp (fake, obviously, as per all other camps, but very well furnished and lit by torch and traditional lamps) to have your dinner under the stars watching a cultural Emirati entertainment performance. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is one hour’s drive from Dubai, offers good opportunities to see local fauna and is open to a very limited number of travel agencies. The camp where you have dinner is inside the private retreat of a local royal family member, this is the same area where the prestigious Al Maha Desert Resort is located.

  • Duration of the desert tour: 7 hours, departure from the hotel between 2:30pm and 4:30pm, return between 9:30pm and 11.30pm depending on the season/sunset; a reminder email with the precise pick-up time will be sent prior to your tour departure.
  • Guide: Spanish, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian speaking driver/guide; usually the guides are very well-experienced.
  • Safari features: small group exclusive tour.
  • Price: is per person and includes air-conditioned minivan transportation from/to your hotel, wildlife drive through Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve in a open vintage Land Rover, sunset falcon show with sparkling date juice, henna tattoos, live bread making, Arabic coffee making and aromatic shisha pipe, a very short after-sunset camel ride in a lit area near the camp, dinner includes soup, salad, appetiser, main course, desserts, tea and non-alcoholic beverages and a cultural performance.
  • Video: a drone view of vintage open Land Rovers, falconry demonstration and the bedouin camp of Platinum Heritage in these images courtesy of Jens Journeyz:

  • Pros: exploring the desert in an open vehicle means getting fantastic views and a more thrilling experience; usually the Land Rovers proceed slightly interspaced from each other and the safari takes place inside a protected area, so you have a greater chance of seeing the desert fauna including Arabian Gazelles, foxes and if you are (very) lucky one of the rare 100 elusive Arabian Oryx living in the reserve.
  • Cons: none, the price is higher than any of the other similar safari tours but worth the money; here everything, including the 4WD you use during wildlife drive, dinner and toilets at the bedouin camp is exceptionally good; compared to the previous tour and to almost all other safaris on offer in Dubai, the number of participants on this tour is lower and the camp is more intimate; however do not expect to be alone.
  • Good to know: during Ramadan there is no performance either on this safari or on all the other desert tours offered in the United Arab Emirates; instead you will experience a lavish iftar (term for a meal after sunset during Ramadan) and spend the rest of the evening relaxing in a traditional majlis, trying top-quality shisa, admiring the stars in a professional Astronomy session.
  • Recommended: if you want high level services, the local supplier of this safari is Platinum Heritage Luxury Tours & Safaris, very well-appreciated on TripAdvisor. They have handled lots of celebs, including Will Smith, Ricky Martin, Kobe Bryant, German professional footballer Thomas Muller and Australian singer Kylie Minogue.

Quad Bike (ATV) Desert Safari: Self-Drive Quad Biking Off-Road in the Dunes of the Dubai Desert | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

Quad Bike (ATV) Desert Safari: Self-Drive Quad Biking Off-Road in the Dunes of the Dubai Desert

Have you ever ridden a Quad bike and would like to do it in the Dubai desert dunes? Well, it’s possible and without spending exorbitant amounts of money. You have the chance to try a new vehicle and admire the desert at the same time. You will be picked up from your hotel in Dubai and taken to the starting point of the tour where a guide will provide instructions on how to use and control your ATV Quad bike. After being briefed on the rules and issued with safety gear it is time to take control of your own automatic Quad bike and ride through the sand dunes. Usually this desert tour is scheduled with an early departure and a return to your hotel by late-morning, so you have the rest of the day free to do something else.

  • Pick-up and drop-off: departure and return to your hotel in Dubai.
  • Duration of the desert tour: 4 hours.
  • Guide: English.
  • Safari features: this is a shared tour with other participants; one hour to reach the desert, quad tour that lasts up to one hour plus one hour’s drive back to your hotel.
  • Price: is per person; one quad for each person booked.
  • Pros: the opportunity to have a look to the desert scenery around Dubai with a more active tour compared to other traditional excursions.
  • Cons: don’t even think of going where you want to and riding over virgin dunes. The itinerary is pre-fixed, the guide leads the way and all participants must all follow in ordered, single file; apart from riding a Quad bike, the tour does not include 4WD dune bashing; as for all shared tours at departure and arrival the pick-up and drop-off at different hotels means wasting time.
  • Good to know: participants must be 16 years and over and should have a basic knowledge of driving; a minimum of 2 participants per booking is required.
  • Recommended: if you have never driven a Quad bike this is a good chance to try it, the riding path to follow is very easy, suitable even for families travelling with teens.
  • Check prices and book with: GetYourGuide | Dubai: Quad Bike (ATV) Safari Morning Tour
  • A similar option: the ATV Quad bike ride lasts one hour but departure can be in the afternoon and if you wish the tour can includes a BBQ dinner in a desert camp, in this last case total duration is 6 hours with return to the hotel in the evening, this is the link to book GetYourGuide | Dubai: Desert Safari, Quad & ATV Tour, Camp with BBQ Dinner
  • T he Dune Buggy option: the same local supplier offers another variation of this tour, with a 2 seater dune buggy instead of the ATV Quad bike, here is the link to investigate GetYourGuide | Dubai: Self-Drive Dune Buggy Safari with Pickup and Drop-Off ; the age limit is 18 years old and over, bring your driving license with you; the price is much more attractive if two people share the same buggy and alternate the driving time.

4WD & Quad Morning Safari: Dune Bashing, Sandboarding & Quad Bikes Ride Morning Tour from Dubai | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

4WD & Quad Morning Safari: Dune Bashing, Sandboarding & Quad Bikes Ride Morning Tour from Dubai

Are you outdoorsy? Are you not interested in fake bedouin dinners at all? During your stay in Dubai you can only do a desert tour in the morning? In addition to admiring the beautiful desert scenery with this excursion you can try at lot of activities: not only experience the thrill of dune bashing but take a ride on a camel and try out your sandboarding skills surfing the sand. Plus, as an option, have the chance to ride your own Quad bike for half-an-hour.

  • Duration of the desert tour: 4 hours, morning departure, you leave your hotel between 8am and 9am, usually the day before the tour you will be notified of the exact pick-up time.
  • Guide: English speaking.
  • Safari features: there are several safari options, shared or private tour, with or without a Quad; in addition to transportation from/to your hotel the tour includes 30 minutes of dune bashing in the middle of the Lahbab dunes, a very short camel ride plus sandboarding; if you buy the Quad option you have a 30 minute Quad bike experience, you drive your own Quad on a pre-fixed itinerary.
  • Price: is per person, you can book with or without a Quad; just note that if you are not interested in the Quad, well this excursion becomes an exceptionally good value for money tour, probably one of the cheapest ways to have a look at the Dubai desert, without investing too much time and money.
  • Pros: the combination of the off road 4WD dune bashing plus the opportunity to personally drive your own Quad.
  • Cons: I would say none, just be aware that the camel ride is super short, no more than a few minutes; take into consideration that on the way back to your hotel there is usually a 20 min long stop at a fuel station in the middle of nowhere to inflate the tyres of your vehicle, so be patient.
  • Recommended: if you want to see the desert and enjoy a multi activity experience.
  • Check prices and book with:   GetYourGuide | Red Dunes Desert Safari, Quad Bikes, Sandboarding & Camel Ride
  • Another option: a similar excursion is also offered by GetYourGuide | Dubai: Red Dunes with Camel Ride, Sandboarding & BBQ Options , please read carefully the description of the tour, what is included and what is not and compare the prices before booking.

Luxury Camel Safari with Dinner Exclusive Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Camel Safari | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

Luxury Camel Safari with Dinner: Exclusive Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Camel Safari

Speaking about the desert, you cannot miss out on a camel tour. Actually, the excursion you find described below is probably the most expensive of all camel safaris offered in Dubai. Why? Because it is one of the best and well organised tours. It takes place inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and the actual supplier of the service is the acclaimed Platinum Heritage, proprietor of the special high end camp where you have dinner and watch a show at the end of the safari.

  • Duration of the desert tour: 7 hours, departure between 2pm and 4pm, back between 9pm and 11pm, the exact time changes according to the season.
  • Guide: English, French and Arabic.
  • Safari features: one hour shared minibus transfer to go, the same to get back; usually the camel ride is not on an individual basis but together with other tourists who have booked the same tour, generally this is a small group exclusive tour; you sit on a camel but you do not ride it, your guide walks in front leading the camel; dinner and show included.
  • Price: is per person, children 5-11 years old have a discount.
  • Pros: the chance to observe and take things at a slower pace; the slow rhythm of the camel’s stride allows you to appreciate the beauty of the natural environment and take in details that escape you when you travel by 4WD.
  • Cons: even if the total duration of the tour is 7 hours, the camel ride only lasts 45 minutes, this is something you must know in advance in order to avoid disappointment; nevertheless, even though it is not a long camel ride, it takes place in the middle of the dunes in the actual desert and not inside a camp compound. Furthermore, it lasts much more than the 5-minute climb up/take pictures/get off camel activities featured in all other tours which include 4WD dune bashing/quad/dune buggy.
  • Recommended: this is the perfect Dubai desert tour for families travelling with children of primary school age and above, in fact kids under 5 can not join this tour.
  • Check prices and book with: Viator | Camel Desert Safari with Traditional Dinner & Heritage Activities from Dubai
  • If you want to spend less money: the camel ride always lasts 45 minutes but the camp where you have dinner and watch a show is more simple, it is located in a different area and accomodates more people, click here to get all the info GetYourGuide | Dubai: Sunset Camel Safari, Stargazing, BBQ at Al Khayma ; usually you have the option to book the more expensive private tour or the cheaper shared tour, value for money of the group option is really interesting; the local supplier is the excellent OceanAir Travels, reviews are very good.

Private 4WD Desert Safari Adventure: Tour in the Dubai Desert by Private Car & Guide from Dubai | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

Private 4WD Desert Safari Adventure: Tour in the Dubai Desert by Private Car & Guide from Dubai

This is a totally private tour, your driver/guide comes to pick you up at your hotel and takes you into the desert in his own 4WD. There’s only you and your guide in the car, without sharing with anybody else. The tour is 100% customised, ask your driver to take you to an area of the Dubai desert where there isn’t anybody, so that you can experience the beauty and the magic of the desert with no other tourists in sight. Dune bashing and sandboarding are already included in the price, as well as one bottle of water, if you want to try the quad experience you will have to pay extra. Anyway, take into consideration that if quad & sandboarding are what you are more interested in there are tours to book. There is an unusual, brief stop at Ras Al Khor Nature Reserve in the inner area of Dubai Creek before returning to your hotel.

  • Pick-up and drop-off: any hotel in Dubai.
  • Duration of the desert tour: 5 hours, usually departure is in the morning at 8:30.
  • Guide: English and Hindi speaking driver/guide, you know the name of the guide at the time of booking.
  • Safari features: 100% private tour with 4WD and driver/guide on an exclusive basis.
  • Price: the real cost of the tour depends on the number of participants, starting from 4 people the price is fully competitive compared to the shared tours.
  • Pros: a car on an exclusive basis; you can reach uncrowded, off the beaten track areas of the desert, where you can get out of the car and take a walk on the sand in absolute silence; the short stop to Ras Al Khor Nature Reserve (if things have not changed it’s closed on Friday) on the way back to the hotel, you will see pink flamingos with the skyscrapers of Dubai in background.
  • Cons: none.
  • Recommended: great for everybody but perfect for families and small groups of friends that can travel all together in a private 4WD without sharing a car with anyone else; this tour really gives its best if you clearly specify to your guide that you don’t care about quad & sandboarding, but instead you want to experience the true desert and are looking for a remote dune with nobody on the horizon.

Overnight Desert Safari: 4WD Tour from Dubai with Dinner and Night in a Tent at a Desert Camp | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

Overnight Desert Safari: 4WD Tour from Dubai with Dinner and Night in a Tent at a Desert Camp

Sleeping in a tent in the desert? Yes, you can do this too in Dubai. It is an identical safari to the tour that takes you to Al Khaima camp, with all the usual activities of dune bashing, sandboarding and dinner with a show at the camp. But there is a difference: after dinner, instead of returning to your hotel you sleep at the desert camp, in a large and very comfortable tent. Then in the morning at dawn take a short camel ride of about 10 minutes, have breakfast at the camp and then return to the hotel by early morning.

But is it a good idea? Uhm, I have some doubts. There are two main things to consider. The first: you don’t sleep in a tent in the immensity of the desert and in contact with nature, but in a large camp together with many other tourists, the same camp that welcomes the vast majority of travelers who participate in dinner excursions in the desert in Dubai, i.e. sleeping in the desert does not add much to the experience of the normal desert tour with dinner without the overnight stay. The second: you pay extra for a night in a tent without using the room, already paid for, which remains at your disposal in the hotel where you are staying in Dubai.

Let’s be clear, I have nothing against nights in a tent in the desert, in fact I really love sleeping in a tent in isolated and very remote places, but only if there is a need and above all only if it is worth it. That is, if the place where I sleep in a tent is a place of extraordinary beauty, and the only way to enjoy it is to sleep in a tent.

  • Pick-up and drop-off: the tour includes departure and return to your hotel in Dubai.
  • Duration of the desert tour: approx. 17 hours, departure in the early afternoon with return to the hotel the following morning immediately after breakfast.
  • Safari features: shared group tour with overnight stay in a tent in the desert.
  • Price: in addition to off-road transport, sandboarding, dune bashing in the dunes lasting 30-45 minutes and all the usual activities provided at the camp where dinner is served, this excursion also includes one night in a private tent in the desert including breakfast.
  • Pros: if you want to experience sleeping in the desert with all the comforts.
  • Cons: this desert tour is expensive and you end up paying for a night in a tent when after dinner you could easily go back to sleep at your hotel for much less; if you are someone who cannot give up the air conditioning, keep in mind that the tents in the desert camp do not have air conditioning.
  • Recommended: if you are traveling as a family with young kids, they should like the story of the tent.

Enjoy the vastness of the desert from the top of a hot air balloon. Wow, this is a unique emotion! A truly special experience, and above all it allows you an extraordinary view of the desert in the outskirts of Dubai, something you don’t get in traditional off-road desert tours and desert safaris. The hot air balloon flight generally takes place at dawn and lasts approximately 1 hour, transfers are included as well as a cup of hot coffee or tea before take-off.

  • Pick-up and drop-off: included for any hotel in Dubai.

  • Cons: this tour does not include dune bashing or other desert activities but only pure hot air ballooning.
  • Recommended: if you want to fly in a hot air balloon over the Dubai desert spending as little as possible but using a reliable operator.
  • Check prices and book with: GetYourGuide | Dubai: Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Tour Over the Desert
  • An alternative hot air balloon tour: the pure hot air balloon flight over the Dubai desert is also offered by the well-known operator Hot Air Balloon UAE, this is the link to check the price and book GetYourGuide | Dubai: Hot Air Balloon Ride Over the Desert

Hot Air Balloon, Quad and 4WD Tour: Desert Tour with Hot Air Balloon Flight, Dune Bashing and Quad Ride including Breakfast | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

Hot Air Balloon, Quad and 4WD Tour: Desert Tour with Hot Air Balloon Flight, Dune Bashing and Quad Ride including Breakfast

If budget isn’t an issue then this tour has its spectacularity. Indeed it is one of the most exciting and adrenaline-pumping of all the desert tours presented in this post. There is everything in this excursion. Starting with the hot air balloon flight over the desert at dawn, lasting about 1 hour, flying over the dunes from over 1,000 meters above sea level, the panorama is extraordinary. During the hot air balloon flight you witness the spectacle of the falcons in flight, they leave and return to the balloon, and it is more exciting than you might think. Once landed, first follows the experience of dune bashing in 4WD among the desert dunes, and then enjoy a very rich and abundant buffet breakfast, immediately after which you can take either a short camel ride or horse ride inside the camp. But the activities are not over yet, before returning to the hotel the Quad experience is planned, driving for about 20 minutes in the sand along a pre-established route. Expensive but very complete and spectacular desert tour.

  • Duration of the desert tour: 5 hours total.
  • Guide: English, and Arabic of course.
  • Safari features: shared transfers and hot air balloon flight over the desert in small groups, the local operator is Hot Air Balloon UAE.
  • Price: the cost of this desert tour includes transfers, tea/coffee before taking off, a 45-60 minute hot air balloon flight depending on weather conditions, the sensational falcon show in flight, a 20 minute off-road dune bashing tour in the middle of the dunes, buffet breakfast at a Bedouin camp, a short camel or horseback ride, 20 minutes Quad driving experience, and the flight certificate.
  • Video: the spectacle of the hot air balloon flight with Hot Air Balloon UAE, the thrill of the falcons flying around the balloon, the dune bashing into the desert, the short camel ride and the sumptuous breakfast before returning to the hotel:

  • Pros: trying more activities in addition to hot air ballooning, with off-road dune bashing and quad riding above all; the breakfast, much more complete and abundant than the simple tea or coffee refreshments offered on cheaper tours.
  • Cons: only one, the price, this is perhaps one the most expensive desert tours of all the excursions you can do in Dubai.
  • Recommended: if you are looking for a very exciting desert tour and can afford it.
  • Check prices and book with: GetYourGuide | Dubai: Hot Air Balloon, Desert Safari, and Quad Biking Tour
  • The alternative of a hot air balloon flight in the Dubai Conservation Reserve: a extraordinary desert tour, one of the most beautiful tours you can book in Dubai, a single tour that combines a hot air balloon flight of approximately 1 hour with the experience of exploration of the desert aboard a Land Rover inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve; the breakfast offered is very varied and of the highest quality, this is the link to investigate and book GetYourGuide | Dubai: Sunrise Balloon Flight with Breakfast & Falcon Photo ; the local operator is Balloon Adventures Dubai, by far one of the most well-known and appreciated operators specialized in hot air balloon flights in the United Arab Emirates.

Self-Drive 4×4 Dubai Desert and Dune Bash Safari: the Perfect Tour if You Want to Self-Drive a 4WD in the Dubai Desert | The 10 Best Dubai Desert Safaris and 4WD Tours

Self-Drive 4×4 Dubai Desert and Dune Bashing Safari: the Perfect Tour if You Want to Self-Drive a 4WD in the Dubai Desert

This is a brilliant tour. Crossing one of the most scenic areas of all the Dubai desert, far from where other companies go and remote from more or less fake bedouin camps. But above all, you drive from start to finish! Oh yes, this is not the classic desert safari where you sit as a passenger at the mercy of a driver. Instead, it is “You” Driving a modified Jeep Wrangler in a convoy, into the heart of the most beautiful dunes in the UAE, while following an experienced leader in a 4×4. You see the best of the Dubai desert and learn how to drive a 4WD in the sands. This is how the tour works: you are picked up at your hotel, 45-minute minivan transfer to reach the starting point of the excursion, here you get your fully modified Wrangler with lifted suspension, upgraded wheels and tyres. Then your experience starts with a detailed safety briefing. Your guide will explain how the 4×4 system in your modified Jeep works, various safety aspects of the drive and desert driving tips. Further instructions will be given using walkie-talkies as you drive. Once on location it’s hands on learning as you deflate tyres and prepare for desert entrance. As you enter the desert you will learn and practice various driving techniques which are important for keeping on top of the sand while avoiding getting stuck. During your long drive you stop several times to take pictures and reach one of the best viewpoints in the Dubai desert, Fossil Rock, high on the dunes. Then you start on your way back, stop to inflate tyres, drop-off your Wrangler and go back to your hotel by minivan. Beware that the cost you see at first glance may appear very high, but if you book for 4 people the price becomes very interesting.

  • Duration of the desert tour: 5 and a half hours start to finish, departure around midday, back at the hotel at 6pm.
  • Guide: English speaking who drives in front in his own jeep, you and other participants follow in a convoy, everybody driving their own 4WD, walkie-talkies in each vehicle to communicate with. The guide has a winch, a tow rope (if you get stuck in the sand) and a first-aid kit.
  • Safari features: self drive 4WD tour; here you really see the actual desert, this tour includes at least 2 hours off-road driving on the sand in the middle of the dunes. You have control of a very special vehicle, equipped to tackle any terrain.
  • Price: select the date and insert the number of people (from 1 to 4) to get the correct price; the cost of this desert tour includes transportation from/to the hotel, one Jeep Wrangler with all the necessary fuel for the trip and guide assistance; one driver plus maximum 3 other passengers, if there are 2 drivers there is a supplement; confirmation will be received within 48 hours of booking, subject to availability.
  • Pros: with this self-drive 4×4 Dubai desert tour you see the most scenic area of the desert in the Emirate of Dubai and while looking at the dunes you learn how to drive in the sand. The local supplier of this desert tour is the acclaimed OffRoad-Zone, reviews on TripAdvisor are glowing, at least at the time of the update of this post.
  • Cons: none, apart from the cost. No preliminary off-road driving experience is required and you do not go fast, here is what OffRoad-Zone writes in the website: The You Drive 4×4 Desert Experience will be technical and scenic but not at high speeds. The best way to learn to drive in the desert is to feel your vehicle and respond to the conditions.
  • Good to know: the main driver must be at least 25 or over. 21-24 year olds can drive once in the desert. After booking you will receive all supplier contacts. You will be required to supply a copy with photo of a valid driver’s licence and passport copy by mail. Credit card must be Visa or MasterCard and is required for a security deposit against the 4×4 Jeep rental. Even though the jeeps are insured you are responsible for fast driving fines during road transfers to the desert, overtuning and any tyre and vehicle damage for incorrect driving in the desert, as well as any accidents that may occur. Important Things to Know About Dubai Desert Safaris

Aspects to Consider Before Booking a Safari to the Dubai Desert

  • Do NOT expect to see grandiose, virgin Saharan sceneries nor the dunes of Sossusvlei in Namibia which are hundreds of meters high. The great majority of desert areas around Dubai offer small and medium size dunes tens of meters high. And on the horizon, more often than not, there is a pole, a fence or a construction to “spoil” the view.
  • A tour into the Dubai desert is perfect as a first desert experience for someone who has never been into the desert before and wants to get there quickly and comfortably, protected from the heat and pampered by air conditioning and then go rapidly back to the hotel at the end of the tour.
  • The Dubai desert is popular and many people go there. With a few exceptions, whatever tour you choose is likely to be a very touristic experience . This applies in particular to all multi-activity excursions and safaris combining dinner and a show at the bedouin camp.
  • Take into consideration that very few bedouins still live in the Dubai desert. And, of course, you will not meet them in tourist camps located less than one hour’s drive from the big hotels and seaside resorts. If you are looking for authenticity and a real desert experience, forget it. You’ll be disappointed.
  • Instead, if you are in Dubai for some days and want to admire landscape which is totally different from the one you live in and wish to spend a few fun hours without breaking your bank account, well you have endless desert tours to choose from.

Important Things to Know About Dubai Desert Safaris

  • Before booking read the full description of the desert tour you like in the official page of Viator, Withlocals and GetYourGuide carefully, please check what is included and what is not, meeting points, times of departure and cancellation policies. After booking, if you have any queries or doubts , immediately contact Viator, Withlocals or GetYourGuide Customer Service in order to receive assistance.
  • The day before the tour, please reconfirm the pick-up time with the local supplier. You receive phone and email of local supplier of the tour immediately after your booking. Maybe your hotel can help.
  • Please read the reviews of each desert safari. If the majority of the reviews are positive that’s a good thing. And always check all the info you read here in the official page of each desert tour, things change and the official site provides the latest updates.

15 Best Desert Safaris in Dubai

A quick note to say that most tours include pick up and drop off from your hotel or a chosen location in central Dubai. I have specified any exceptions to this rule. Your pick-up time is generally an hour before the tour start time. The exact time will be communicated with you at the time of booking.

Do check the terms carefully to ensure that the area where you stay in Dubai is covered in the transfer service. Bear in mind that religious holidays such as Ramadan do affect certain elements of the tours such as the cultural performances and dances.

Most Popular Desert Safaris in Dubai

The following 5 listings are the most popular desert safari tours in Dubai based on the opinions of previous customers. These tours offer a balanced blend of adrenaline and culture and each has various additional extras if you want to personalize your tour.

1. Dubai: Premium Red Dunes, Camel Safari, & BBQ at Al Khayma

Beduin camp in Dubai Desert at sunset

Price range: $$ Duration: 7 hours  Meals: BBQ buffet  Highlights: Dune bashing, camel safari, sandboarding, falconry show

An excellent all-rounder tour, this desert safari takes you across the Lahbab Desert where you will experience the thrill of dune bashing. Once you’ve worked up an appetite you will be taken to the Al Khayma Desert Camp for an evening of relaxation and further activities.

A short camel ride is included in this tour and there is the option to add a second ride and feed the camels yourself. You are also invited to partake in a spread of cultural activities including henna painting, meeting the resident falcons, and watching a traditional dance performance.

Additional add ons include the chance to go quad biking or expand the dune bashing to a longer duration. The meal included is a BBQ buffet but another upgrade gives you the choice to receive VIP table service.

Setting the precedent for most of the tours on this list, the excursion includes your pick up and drop off from your chosen hotel by a licensed desert guide in an air-conditioned 4X4 Land Cruiser. Lasting 7 hours in total, the tour usually starts at 3 pm.

Considering the inclusions, tour duration, price point, and customizations, I consider this to be the best Dubai desert safari in terms of the overall experience.

Customer review: “This excursion was a 10/10 experience!!! It was well worth every coin, most especially the dune bashing. Mansoor Manz was such an amazing host, if you are able to request anyone request him! He went above and beyond to make sure this experience for my family was special- the drive to the desert was accompanied with a full on tour, facts and history about the UAE, and good humor mixed in it all. This is a must book!” – Ahlam, May 2021

2. Dubai: Red Dunes Safari, Quad Bike, Camel Ride & Sand Board

Jeep tour in the Dubai Desert

Price range: $ Duration: 4 hours  Meals: None  Highlights: Dune bashing, camel safari, sandboarding

This Dubai desert safari is essentially a condensed version of the first tour on my list. The shorter time span (and subsequent reduction in price) means that this one is ideal for those on a shorter stay in Dubai or who are on a tighter budget.

The dune bashing aspect of the safari will last around 40 minutes after which you can enjoy a short camel ride and a spot of sandboarding. If you’d rather not take part in this then you can simply relax and soak up the landscape. There are plenty of opportunities to take photos during the safari.

Starting times vary from 8 am, 9 am or 10 am in the morning, and 3 pm in the afternoon which means that you will catch the sunset before you depart. Again, you will be collected from your hotel or desired location.

As with the first tour, this safari offers a couple of customization options. Those include upgrading from a shared tour to a private tour and adding quad biking if you wish.

However, there is no inclusion for food with this excursion so ensure that you eat well prior to leaving and pack some snacks to keep your energy levels up.

Customer review: “This tour was exactly what we paid for! Nabeel, our tour guide, was great with pictures and super fun in the safari ride! He was very attentive and communicative. The camel ride was amazing and I was happy that the camels look cared for. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a desert experience.” – Paola, April 2021

3. The Sunriser: 4-Hour Sunrise Safari from Dubai

Sunrise in Dubai Desert

Price range: $$ Duration: 4 hours  Meals: Breakfast picnic  Highlights: Sunrise in the desert, falcon show

If you’ve ever fantasized about witnessing the sunrise above the Arabian Desert, then this is the best Dubai desert safari for you.

Once you’ve got the early pick-up out of the way (don’t worry, you can snooze in the car) your licensed guide will whisk you away to the remote sand dunes where you will watch the horizon glow with the first rays of sunshine.

As the sun makes its final ascent you will be invited to take your seat for an Arabian breakfast picnic while you watch the falcon show. There will be plenty of time to ask questions about the desert lifestyle and customs, and you will gain heaps of trivia about the birds of prey during this tour.

This option is perfect for the culturally curious and those with an interest in wildlife – and early birds, it goes without saying.

This sunrise safari is perfect for bucket listers, photographers, and couples seeking one of the most romantic activities that the UAE can provide. But please note that this tour does not include dune bashing or any other extreme activities. The tour starts at 4.45 am, which means pick up is around 4 am.

Customer review: “We were picked up from the port on time. The guides prepared a great breakfast for us in the desert and we could calmly wait for the sunrise. Even if the falcon show was a typical tour program, it really fascinated us. However, this only took about 10 minutes. Dune bashing with the pick ups was also a lot of fun and we can only recommend the trip!” – Theresa, December 2019

4. Dubai: Morning Desert Safari with Sandboarding & Camel Ride

Dubai desert safari

Price range: $ Duration: 4 hours  Meals: Light snacks or brunch (optional) Highlights: Dune bashing, camel safari, sandboarding

If sunrise is pushing you too far out of your comfort zone then how about a more leisurely safari with the option to add brunch? This desert safari combines the rush of dune bashing and sandboarding in the Dubai desert with the opportunity to experience the landscape in tranquility before the afternoon tours arrive.

Once you’ve had your fill of adrenaline your guide will take you to Al Khayma where you will be greeted with traditional Arabic coffee (Gahwa), dates, and other sweets. Once at the camp you will have the chance to meet and ride the local camels and learn about the Bedouin way of life.

If you want to indulge in the traditional Arabian brunch then this will take place upon completion of the safari quest, at Al Khayma Heritage House in the Al Fahidi Historical District.

This safari offers four morning start times of 7.30 am, 8 am, 9 am, and 10 am. However, there is also the opportunity to book an afternoon slot at 3 pm or 3.45 pm which will conclude with golden hour. Again there is the option to add quad biking to your session.

This is the best Dubai desert safari for those on a budget who still want to experience a bit of everything. For those seeking luxury, you can select the private tour version of this excursion.

Customer review: “Bash, our guide picked us up right on time, then he drove us to the desert and during the ride he showed us some attractions and told us about the history. Sand duning was fun but you shouldn’t do it if you have motion sickness. Sand boarding and the camel ride were a nice experience, would definitely recommend!” – Sarah, April 2021

5. From Dubai: Red Dunes and Camel Safari with Overnight Camp

viator desert safari dubai

Price range: $$ Duration: 17 hours  Meals: Light snacks, BBQ buffet, breakfast  Highlights: Dune bashing, sandboarding, camel safari, camping overnight in the desert, sunset, and sunrise

Now that you’re all warmed up with the first couple of tours, how about upgrading your desert safari to a camping adventure? Surely the most immersive safari tour in Dubai, this option gives you the chance to live the real desert life by spending a night in a Bedouin tent!

Following your hotel collection, you will journey to the desert and enjoy a sequence of dune bashing, sandboarding, and camel riding. If you so wish you can also add quad biking at this stage for an additional fee.

After all the excitement you will be offered Gaymat (Arabic sweets) and Chai (Arabic tea) before making yourself comfortable to observe the sunset in the camp.

You will spend the night sleeping in a Nawar, a Bedouin-style bed housed within a tent, beneath a quilt of stars. But before you hit the hay you will share a BBQ feast while you watch Tanoura dancing and belly dancing displays.

There is also the option to smoke shisha and meet the resident falcons, and ladies may participate in henna painting.

You will start your second day by rising early to undertake a camel trek through the dunes to the nearby sunrise spot. Before returning to Dubai bright and early, you will tuck into a freshly cooked Arabian breakfast. The tour starts at 3.30 pm and is excellent value for what you receive.

Customer review: “Unbelievable from start to finish. I was with the team leader Rav, and he just crushed the dune bashing. The camp in the desert was lovely, the bed and tent they had prepared too. MUST DO in Dubai, like seriously. Worth all your money….. And more!” – William, May 2021

For entertainment, you can look forward to a cultural display of Tanoura and belly dancing. There is also the opportunity to enjoy a brief camel ride in between relaxing in the camp.

The tour starts at 3.15 pm and comes as both a shared tour and the possibility to upgrade to a private tour.

Customer review: “Karnain was great! He was a great driver and very informative. As we were driving to our location he made great suggestions on what to do while in Dubai on vacation. Dubai desert safari with dune buggy

Price range: $$$ Duration: 7 hours  Meals: BBQ  Highlights: Dune buggy experience, sandboarding, Tanura and belly dancing show

Safety is paramount and each buggy is equipped with a full roll cage and a full safety harness. Before your guide unleashes you on the dunes they will provide a full safety briefing to give you the confidence to tackle the giant dunes.

The dune buggy expedition lasts one hour after which you will disembark at the desert camp and feast on a lavish desert BBQ while the sun sinks into the horizon. Make sure you grab the opportunity to surf down the dunes before the desert is plunged into twilight.

Most Unique Desert Safari Tours in Dubai

For the final section of my guide to the best Dubai desert safaris, I’ve chosen 5 tours that offer something utterly unique.

The following tours are preoccupied with showcasing the heritage, culture, nature, and wildlife of the desert and sustainable tourism. None of these excursions include dune bashing but they all offer something remarkable in its place.

11. Heritage Desert Safari from Dubai

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Price range: $$$ Duration: 7 hours  Meals: Dinner Highlights: Vintage Land Rover transportation, tour of Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, bread making experience

This safari tour in Dubai is radically different from the others. First of all, you’ll notice that your vehicle is a vintage, open-air 1950’s Land Rover rather than a modern 4X4.

As I explained, there is no dune bashing in this tour but rather the safari focuses on the heritage of desert culture and the exotic wildlife that resides in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

This is a 225 square kilometer (87.1 square miles) natural reserve which limits the number of tour operators who are permitted to organize trips here. This means that with minimal impact on the environment you can see what the region would have looked like centuries ago. In fact, another wonderful factor about this safari tour is that a contribution is made directly to the reserve when you book your place.

After taking an informative tour through the conversation reserve you will relax at an evocatively lit Bedouin camp and immerse yourself in activities such as camel rides, henna artistry, shisha, and befriending the falcons.

Another unique feature that this tour offers is that you will learn how to prepare a local bread recipe that has been carefully handed down through the ages. The tour starts at 2.30 pm and your booking includes your dinner beneath the stars.

Customer review: “Fantastic from start to finish. The guides really cared about the experience they were delivering and all felt very authentic and premium. Particularly liked the awareness of sustainability of the experience by not offering dune bashing, sticking to the tracks and not using plastic bottles, rare to see in Dubai!” – Max, December 2020

12. Dubai Private Night Safari & Astronomy

Dubai Desert Camp at Night

Price range: $$$ Duration: 5 hours Meals: 3-course dinner Highlights: Vintage Land Rover transportation, twilight desert walk, astronomy session

If you’re waiting for me to share the best desert safari in Dubai for a romantic date night then this is the one you’ll want to surprise your other half with. Pick up for this unique night safari is 5.30 pm.

Each booking covers two guests and you will venture into the desert after sunset in an open-top 1950’s Land Rover. After a drive through the cooling dunes, you will participate in a twilight nature walk where you might see anything from creepy crawlies to fauna.

Night vision binoculars are provided so that you can see the full might of the desert-scape and its nocturnal residents. This activity is led by a highly trained conservation guide with extensive knowledge of ecotourism and the local environment.

In addition to the wildlife safari, you will take part in an astronomy session with a professional telescope which allows you to fully comprehend the star-studded sky. Your evening concludes with a decadent three-course dinner at an exclusive camp within the desert retreat of the local royal family. As you see, this safari oozes romance!

Customer review: “We had the best guide ever, speaking Russian German and also English fluently!! Amazing Tour, very entertaining and interesting you get a lot of impressions about the beduines. I really recommend this tour if you like to a different view of Dubai. The food was also really tasty. we started from 6.30 pm until 12 pm, be prepared to wear comfortable shoes.” – Ngan, May 2021

13. 1 or 1.5 Hour Horseback Dubai Desert Park Ride

Horse riding in the Dubai desert

Price range: $$ Duration: 1-1.5 hours  Meals: None Highlights: Experience the desert by horseback, washing and tending to your horse, possibility to see native wildlife

Giddy up, this is one of the best desert safaris in Dubai for horse lovers! You will mount your friendly horse and follow your guide through the dunes of the National Mushrif Park.

Along the way, you can keep your eyes peeled for native wildlife that resides in the region such as the desert fox. Even without spotting any fauna, the scenery is breathtaking and you can soak up nature far from the sounds of the dune bashing 4X4s and quad bikes.

Upon conclusion of the trek, you will be invited to wash and groom your companion horse and give them a reward of carrots. The tour is best suited for those with some horse riding experience as at times you will trot and canter.

This tour is available at 5.30 am, 6.30 am and 6 am. Please note that unlike most of the other safaris on this list, for this activity you will need to arrange your own transport to and from the horse stables.

Customer review: “Amazing experience in the nature, beautiful surrounding, great horses. All very organized and professional.” – Julia, May 2017

14. Dubai: Private Falconry Safari

Dubai Safari Tour with Falconry

Price range: $$$ Duration: 5 hours  Meals: Luxury breakfast (optional) Highlights: 1.5 hours of falcon handling, nature drive

Designed for those with a keen interest and appreciation for birds of prey, this safari provides you with the bucket list experience of training a falcon to fly from your own wrist.

During the course of the private safari, you will also interact with an owl and an eagle. The falconry experience of the tour lasts 1.5 hours and is led by a professional falconer who is passionate and committed to taking care of the beautiful creatures.

For the remainder of the tour, you will be able to enjoy a nature drive by 4X4 during which you will be poised to spot the likes of houbara bustards, Arabian oryx, and sand gazelles. As you can imagine, this is the best desert safari in Dubai for those who possess an eagle eye of their own! However, your qualified guide will do his/her best to help you detect the wildlife.

As the tour starts at 5 am you may want to upgrade the experience to include a luxury breakfast. At least two participants are required to book this unique tour.

Customer review: “Wonderfully personal experience among the untouched dunes of the Desert Conservation Reserve: for nature lovers interested in learning about falconry and the flora and fauna of the Arabian Peninsula, this tour offers an authentic, hands-on experience with a knowledgeable guide. Rather than watching birds being flown, you become a trainer yourself and get a taste of how various birds of prey hunt and form working bonds with falconers. Worth the extra Money.” – Viktoria, December 2019

15. Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve 5-Hour Tour with Breakfast

Arabian oryxes in Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Price range: $$ Duration: 5 hours  Meals: Breakfast  Highlights: Chance to spot native wildlife, expert knowledge from conservationists

For the final tour on my list, you will head deep into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. As you observe the likes of native birdlife, Arabian Oryx, desert monitors, and free-roaming gazelles, your safari guide will nourish your exploration with a wealth of knowledge about the flora, fauna, and history of the first national park in the United Arab Emirates.

It’s not guaranteed but if you’re really lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the rarely sighted Gordon’s wildcat.

Children over the age of 10 are welcome on this tour and it’s the perfect activity for solo wanderers, families, or couples alike. The start time for this tour is a languid 7.30 am and it concludes with a decadent breakfast at the Al Maha Desert Resort before you return to the city.

Customer review: “One of the highlights of our visit to Dubai, our driver and guide, Peter, was an accomplished naturalist. He quickly picked up on our interest in birds and wildlife and we had some great views of oryx, two species of gazelle, numerous LBJ’s and fine views of a Pallid Harrier, all from the comfort of a splendid silver Range Rover. The desert landscapes are spectacular and the stop for a relaxed breakfast was a welcome break at the unexpectedly luxurious Al Maha “desert resort”.” – Philip, December 2020

Useful Info for Planning Your Trip to Dubai

Where to stay in dubai.

There is no shortage of places to stay in Dubai, from high-end luxury hotels to more affordable options. Contrary to belief, you can find good deals on hotels in Dubai, no matter your budget.

The most important thing to keep in mind when booking your hotel room is the location. Dubai is huge and spread out, so you want to make sure you’re staying in an area that’s close to the sights and attractions you want to see.

Generally speaking, here are the best areas to stay in Dubai:

How to get to Dubai

Being the biggest hub between Europe and Asia and one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomes a huge number of airlines and connects the city with the rest of the world.

Located only 15 km (9.3 miles) from Downtown Dubai, flying to DXB is the most convenient way to get to the city. Once you land, there are several ways to get into the city center: you can take a taxi, the metro, or even the bus.

Although DXB is the biggest airport in Dubai, you can also choose to fly to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This airport is located in the Jebel Ali area, about 50 km (31 miles) from Downtown Dubai, and it mostly handles cargo flights and low-cost carriers.

How to get around in Dubai

Dubai is an enormous city and getting around can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re not used to such big metropolises. The good news is that there are plenty of options when it comes to transportation.

Public transportation – Dubai has both metro and public bus systems in place. Although the metro is the most efficient way to get around, it only covers certain areas of the city. The bus system, on the other hand, covers a larger area but it can be quite slow during rush hour. This is definitely the cheapest way to get around Dubai, however, it can be pretty time-consuming.

Taxis – Taxis are widely available in Dubai and they’re relatively affordable, especially if you’re splitting the fare with someone. Your best bet is downloading the Careem app, which is similar to Uber, and lets you order a traditional Dubai taxi or a private vehicle.

Car rental – If you want the freedom to explore Dubai at your own pace, then renting a car is the way to go. Just keep in mind that traffic can be pretty bad during rush hour, so you might want to avoid driving during those times.

Best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March when the weather is cooler and more bearable. This is also the peak tourist season, so you can expect higher prices and bigger crowds.

If you don’t mind the heat, then you can visit Dubai during the summer months (June to August), when temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). Each and every place is air-conditioned in Dubai, so you can take refuge from the heat indoors.

Just keep in mind that outdoor attractions such as gardens and water parks will be much less enjoyable during this time and it’s practically impossible to swim in the ocean because of the high temperatures.

If you want to avoid the crowds and get cheaper rates, then April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit Dubai. Prices will be lower and the weather will still be relatively pleasant.

Another thing to keep in mind: Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar but the exact dates change every year (usually it falls between March and May).

During this time, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and many restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day. Alcohol is also not served during Ramadan. However, nightlife carries on as usual and many hotels offer special rates during this period.

If you’re not Muslim, then you can still visit Dubai during Ramadan, you just need to be respectful of the local customs and traditions.
