Caribbean Cruises from Tampa

The sprawling subtropical metropolis of Tampa sits along the Gulf Coast of Florida, encircling Tampa Bay from Sarasota to Clearwater Beach. It’s a quintessentially American spot, with white-sand beaches sharing space with shopping malls, and a multicultural mix of residents that ensures flavors from Mexican to Vietnamese are always close at hand. The local lore is rich with moneyed magnates: Both Henry B. Plant and John Ringling, of the Ringling Brothers Circus, left their marks on the region in the form of palatial buildings which now house museums. And, of course, there is no shortage of family fun.

With 14 eateries and 12 bars and lounges, every guest has plenty of elbow room. Passenger favorites include the specialty Brazilian steakhouse.

While Jewel appeals to a variety of traveler types, it's especially well-suited for families thanks to its age-appropriate kids clubs, a video arcade and waterslides. The 670-passenger Oceania Insignia, which was dramatically redesigned in December 2018, maintains a nearly a 1-to-2 crew-to-passenger ratio, which means staff members can provide personalized attention to guests. The expansive redesign included new marble bathrooms, redesigned suites and staterooms and a facelift for the ship's public spaces.

When it comes to dining, guests can choose between five sit-down venues and sip libations at one of several bars and lounges. Activities on the ship are geared toward older cruisers; they include afternoon tea, board games, a casino and nightly live shows.

Insignia offers four cabin types: Inside, Ocean View, Veranda and Suite. Inside and Ocean View cabins are smaller, while Veranda cabins and Suites offer more legroom (between 216 and 1,000 square feet). All cabins come equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars and 1,000-thread-count linens. Suites include extra perks, like 24-hour butler service and in-room iPads.

Grandeur of the Seas

Among Royal Caribbean's smaller ships, Grandeur of the Seas welcomes up to 2,440 guests and 760 crew members. Similar to the rest of the fleet, the ship offers four stateroom categories (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite). Interior cabins range from 136 to 252 square feet, while Suites span 243 to 1,326 square feet. Serenade of the Seas

Serenade of the Seas may have first debuted in 2003, but don't underestimate what a facelift can add. After some extensive upgrades in 2012 and again in 2017, plus a refresh of some public spaces in 2022, the ship now features modern dining options, upgraded cabin amenities, new lounges and bars and a poolside movie screen.

Guests can dine at three complimentary eateries, including the two-level main dining room. The six specialty venues include Izumi Sushi & Hot Rocks Asian restaurant, Giovanni's Table and more.

Enchantment of the Seas

Launched in 1997, Enchantment of the Seas underwent routine maintenance in late 2021, but its last major upgrade was in 2017. This refurbishment added imaginative features like a poolside movie screen, bungee trampolines and additional cabins. Other ship highlights include three pools, a rock climbing wall, a video game arcade and Broadway-inspired shows in the main theater.

For families, the ship offers age-appropriate kids clubs and a splash deck. And for adults, there are six bars and lounges on board, as well as a casino. When it comes to dining, the ship houses five venues and offers 24-hour room service and several other specialty food shops.

As far as lodging goes, only about 20% of the ship's cabins offer balconies, while Interior cabins make up about 40% of the staterooms. While the 2,730-passenger ship maintains a 1-to-3 crew-to-guest ratio with 852 crew members on board, recent cruisers still say all the Royal Caribbean employees – from the room stewards to the wait staff – were pleasant and accommodating.

Enchantment of the Seas sails to the  Bahamas , Europe, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Tampa now homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines: Offering the variety of 4, 5, 7,   10, 11   and 14-day cruise itineraries.

Carnival Cruise Line

Why choose anywhere but Tampa?

As any itinerary planner knows, cruises provide guests with a unique and wonderful way to explore the world, allowing them to continuously move between beautiful locations and make memories that will last a lifetime. Every port of call on an itinerary plays a vital role in creating an enjoyable cruise experience, but what about the homeport?

Embarkation is as crucial to the overall cruise experience as the ship, its onboard amenities and the itinerary of picturesque ports. A homeport that is easy to navigate, and provides a variety of unique and interesting activities just steps from the ship? Now that’s an attractive prospect for guests. And that’s exactly what cruise operators and their itinerary planners will find at Port Tampa Bay on Florida’s West Coast.

Positive impressions start from the moment the cruise guests arrive at the modern, award-winning Tampa International Airport. The airport is a convenient 15-minute drive from the Channelside District in Downtown Tampa, which enables travellers to get a view of the water and soak up the Florida vibe and sunshine before they arrive at one of the three cruise terminals.

But that’s just the beginning. One of the growing trends both cruise lines and their itinerary planners are seeing is an increase in the number of guests who are interested in extending their cruise by enjoying the pre- and post-cruise activities in the homeport city.

Tampa is ideally suited for catering to this trend, given that it is located between some of the world’s most popular theme parks (including Busch Gardens in Tampa) and acclaimed beaches with crystal-clear waters in the cities of Clearwater and St. Pete Beach. In addition, guests are just steps from the sights, sounds and experiences of Downtown Tampa. The district is a destination in itself, thanks to attractions like the Florida Aquarium, Sparkman Wharf, new shops and restaurants on Water Street, the unique Ybor City (Tampa’s Latin Quarter) and Downtown Tampa’s Riverwalk, which has spectacular views and is close to eateries and nightlife.

Port Tampa Bay and the city’s tight network of forward-thinking tourism organisations work together to provide cruise lines’ itinerary planners with the high-quality services they need to help their guests make the most of these tourist attractions during their time in Tampa. For example, Visit Tampa Bay (the city’s tourism agency) collaborates closely with Port Tampa Bay and Tampa International Airport to assist itinerary planners with transportation options that can handle all sizes of guest groups.

Multiple cruise lines have already reaped the benefits of homeporting their ships at Port Tampa Bay. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Paradise and Carnival Pride, Royal Caribbean International’s Radiance of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas and Grandeur of the Seas, Celebrity Cruises' Constellation,  Norwegian Cruise Line’s Jade and Margaritaville at Seas' Islander all sail out of the city, enabling cruise travellers to explore multiple destinations across the Caribbean and Central America.

Carnival cruise ship returns to Florida after funnel fire

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Carnival cruise ship that caught fire over the weekend safely returned to Florida on Monday.

Video from WESH showed the Carnival Freedom bringing passengers back to Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m.

The ship’s funnel caught fire off the coast of the Bahamas on Saturday.

“The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames. Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated but cannot yet be confirmed,” Carnival told WFLA in a statement on Saturday.

A portion of the funnel fell onto Deck 10. The crew asked passengers to avoid balconies and open decks for safety.

Carnival said two crew members who extinguished the fire were treated for minor smoke inhalation. No guests were injured.

The cruise line had to cancel the Freedom’s next two voyages , departing on March 25 and March 29, out of Port Canaveral.

Guests scheduled for those cruises will be issued a full refund and a future cruise credit, Carnival said.

The ship will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday to undergo repairs.

Breaking down South Florida's record Cuban immigration numbers

TAMPA, Fla. — A cruise ship that left Tampa over the weekend helped to rescue a boat of nearly 30 Cuban nationals who were stranded at sea. But this isn’t the first time it’s happened, and it’s part of an even greater number of Cubans immigrating to the U.S.

What You Need To Know

More cuban immigrants are making their way to tampa and parts of south florida since 2022, the u.s. has seen a record-breaking number of cuban immigrants rafael pizano is an advocate for cuban immigrants and says he’s going to continue helping his cuban community.

According to Lutheran Services Florida, since January 2022, they’ve served more than 30,000 Cubans who have arrived in Hillsborough County.

One man who’s seen the increase of Cubans into Florida has been an advocate for his Cuban community for many years.

There’s nothing like a cup of coffee to start off the day. It’s a daily ritual for Rafael Pizano and his dad, Roberto Pizano.

“This is so close to us like anything else, so every day, we make a little bit of coffee and it’s our talk time,” he says.

It’s through every sip that draws them closer to their Cuban roots. Rafael’s father came to the U.S. because he was pushed into exile many years ago.

It’s one of the reasons they share their story to help shine light on the challenges many Cubans face.

“People are going to risk their life: one, it’s a better life, two, they’re escaping a dictatorship that doesn’t change. It’s been the same for 65 years,” he said.

Since 2022, the U.S. has seen a record-breaking number of Cuban immigrants.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports more than 400,000 Cubans were encountered at U.S. ports of entry.

University of South Florida’s Director of Immigrant Wellbeing, Elizabeth Aranda, said traveling by boat isn’t common, but it still happens.

She also said there could be other ways that Cubans are coming in large numbers.

“Nicaragua started allowing flights from Cuban nationals without a visa, so that opened another route. It might have accelerated migration,” Aranda said.

She also said that most Cuban immigrants who come to Florida live in the southern part of the state, with Tampa being the second largest in Cuban migration.

Rafael says it’s been years of work to make a difference for Cuba. He believes that if the Cuban Democracy Act was enforced, it would bring that change.

“Sometimes, it’s just difficult to get that message to the highest levels of a government,” he said.

But through the obstacles, they’ll continue to pave a way for their Cuban community with the hope that one day they’ll return to a free Cuba.

With the increase in migration for Cubans, the Biden administration’s parole program and the recent update to the Cuban Family Reunification Parole Program have made it easier for many Cuban immigrants to connect with loved ones in the U.S. and in Cuba.

Florida panthers | dave hyde: barkov drops the hammer on tampa bay with two goals as panthers advance, ‘he’s not like anybody else,’ maurice says of panthers captain.

“The best chocolate in the world,’’ as the Florida Panthers captain tells them.

But the pumping fist in an electric moment? Had anyone seen it from the team captain? But when Barkov slipped in his second goal of Monday night to stretch the Panthers’ lead to 3-1 midway through the third period of Game 5, a perfect storm of emotion sent him across the ice, dropping down to a knee and pumping that emotive fist.

“It doesn’t happen too often,’’ he said. “But it definitely felt great. It just felt great. That’s all I can say about that moment.”

Goodbye, Tampa Bay.

That’s what that moment said.

Hello, Boston?

That’s what it might mean, even if no one was looking that far ahead after the Panthers’ 6-1 win against Tampa Bay to close their best-of-seven series in five games. It was a moment to look back. Tampa Bay was the team that blocked the Panthers two straight playoff series in 2021 and 2022.

“I’m really happy for the players who went through the pain of not having success,’’ Panthers coach Paul Maurice said.

He mentioned Carter Verhaeghe, who had five goals this series, and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who completed his stellar series with 31 saves in Game 5. Then he mentioned Barkov, the freight train in the middle that Tampa Bay couldn’t move or get around.

For so much of this series, he was setting up teammates, running special teams, doing so much of the work that sets the tone and style of games. He was the highlight reel this night. His short-handed goal turned to make it 2-0 turned into a big moment against Tampa Bay. His fist-pumping goal began to usher in the celebration of advancing to the next round.

“I think he prepared for this kind of right from the summer last year,’’ Maurice said. “He came back to training camp faster, stronger. He was hitting more than he ever has. He’s kind of built himself now for the playoff game.”

It was more than rounding out his game for the playoffs.

“Now he’s able to lead other players,’’ Maurice said. “It’s difficult to be an example to people who can’t do what you can do. The hard things he does in a game we can all do. We can all compete shift on shift. He’s become refined leader for this team because he’s become more like everybody else. In saying that, he’s not like anybody else.”

He came as a kid from Finland who didn’t even now how to drive a car. Now look at him. He’s driving this franchise to places it’s never been — places he only hoped to get to some day. His first seven years were part of the quarter-century of Panthers futility of a franchise that never won a playoff series.

Now they’ve won series in three straight postseasons. Now he’s also put to rest some personal demons about not beating Tampa Bay.

“Both times where we have home-ice advantage, just like this one,’’ Barkov said of those series. “You want to beat them, want to get over that hump. Big respect to them. They’ve been unbelievable in winning (championships).”

This year is different, because these team are different. Tampa Bay had the aging core but not the good depth of their great teams. The Panthers are talented, deep and carry enough scars that this might just be their time.

Does Boston await? Probably. That was a fierce opening series last season, one that started the Panthers on their run to the Stanley Cup Final. Boston remembers. So do the Panthers.

“It was everything you expect in a playoff series,’’ defenseman Aaron Ekblad said.

That’s coming. Tampa Bay is gone. And there sat Barkov, a star of the series, silently listening in his ever-polite manner to Verhaeghe talk about the captain’s game.

“He leads the way and we all follow,’’ Verhaeghe said. “He’s been unbelievable all year. No different in the playoffs. He does everything right, every game. I think a lot of guys on our team try to emulate him.”

Barkov turned to his teammate and softly said, “Thank you.”

Undeveloped Manatee County islands for sale for $75 million

  • Paul Guzzo Times staff

MANATEE COUNTY — As a local fishing charter captain for nearly half a century, Scott Moore can’t recall Rattlesnake Key ever being closed to the public.

“People have been fishing and kayaking there forever,” he said. “The owners have been very graceful people.”

He worries that might change under new ownership.

The 671-acre island believed to be shaped like a rattlesnake, located where Terra Ceia Bay and Tampa Bay meet, is for sale in a $75 million package deal that includes a nearby collection of smaller islands and a neighboring mainland property. In total, it’s 1,000 undeveloped acres of mostly wetlands.

It’s estimated that around 200 acres of that could be developed.

“The possibilities are endless,” said Honey Rand, whose Environmental PR Group represents Tampa Bay Real Estate Investment Corp., which has owned the properties for 17 years. “Residential, resort, marinas.”

The mainland property straddles the Sunshine Skyway bridge and is known as Knott-Cowen. Over the years, it’s been eyed for cruise ship terminals, Rand said. It totals 271 acres, but 176 of that is submerged land.

“You could put a Marriott or a Hard Rock” on Knott-Cowen, said Moore as he captained the Tampa Bay Times and Rand to see the properties. “Rattlesnake Key could have a resort. … You could boat between them and the others.”

Moore has a preference.

“Make it all a nature preserve and park for the public,” he said. “Rattlesnake is one of the biggest fish-producing areas in Tampa Bay. You have all the native birds. You have a lot of marine life.”

During the tour, the Times spotted dolphins, fish leaping from the water and possibly a shark, all just off the shores of Rattlesnake Key.

“The state needs to open their checkbook,” Moore said.

The Florida Legislature was supposed to purchase Rattlesnake Key for just that purpose. In 2022, the state budget allocated $23 million for the purchase. Manatee County offered to pitch in another $3 million.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection then commissioned an appraisal, Rand said. “They said it was worth $7 million. That’s not even a lowball. It’s worse. That’s not even in the ballpark.”

That’s when the owners decided to put the properties on the market.

The appraisal, Rand said, did not take into consideration that Rattlesnake Key has 30 acres of upland and that the entire island sits above the mean high tide line. That makes it safe from storm surges.

Further protecting Rattlesnake Key, Moore said, are the surrounding submerged mangroves. He noted how Rattlesnake Key doesn’t have a large beach area. In most places, the trees come up to the edge of the water because the tides have not washed them away. “People can build homes on it and be safe.”

The owners may erect three residences on Rattlesnake Key for proof, Rand said. A few years back, they developed plans for a resort there. Architectural renderings show elevated casitas along the shoreline accessible by a marina.

“That’s just one of the ways it can be done,” Rand said.

The properties are also available a la carte rather than together.

Rattlesnake Key is still available to the state and county for $25 million, Rand said, but the state’s earmarked dollars disappear on June 30.

It would likely cost more if sold individually to the private sector.

“That $25 million is from three years ago,” Rand said. “The value has gone up since then.”

The owners have not individually valued the other properties, “but will negotiate with interested parties,” Rand said.

The other parcels are:

  • The 64-acre Cowen Islands collection is made up of Paradise Island and Skeet Key.
  • A 5.6-acre crescent moon-shaped slice of Ed’s Key.
  • The 1.79-acre cape known as Gus Point that extends off Little Bird Key.
  • The nearly 38-acre southwestern most tip of Terra Ceia Island.

Neither Moore nor Rand would share who makes up the ownership group, but both described them as avid outdoorspeople who respect that the undeveloped islands are beloved boating destinations for those who want to reconnect with nature.

Moore even volunteers as the owners’ unofficial security person by regularly boating past the properties to ensure visitors are being respectful. But he also respects that the owners have the right to seek what they consider fair value.

“Someone could do a lot with” the properties,” Moore said. “But I think their best use is a preserve. It gives us a look at what old Florida was like.”
