Coronation Street tour: Review, pictures and secrets from the set

Property, Town, Building, House, Street, Neighbourhood, Architecture, Wall, Lane, Road,

It was the end of an era for Coronation Street in December as the long-running soap left its base in Quay Street, Manchester after 53 years of production , but the show's old home is now opening its doors to the public as a tourist attraction for a limited period.

The first tours kicked off this weekend, but ahead of the official launch, Digital Spy was among the first to get a sneak peek at what to expect as the organisers held an official press preview earlier this week.

Here at DS , we've been lucky enough to visit the Street on previous occasions, but even for us this was a completely new experience as the tour proved to be much more than just a simple walk down the cobbles.

With the help of trained tour guides, visitors to the attraction almost become members of the crew themselves as they get an access-all-areas pass to sets, production rooms, wardrobe as well as the Street itself.

Liqueur, Signage, Advertising,

Next stop is the 'Corridor of Stars', which housed the dressing rooms of some of the show's original cast members including Bill Roache and Philip Lowrie. While some remain closed and locked, a couple have been opened up to the public for the first time to give fans an insight into the other main place where the cast relaxed in between scenes.

Interestingly, the tour guides explain that no two dressing rooms were the same, as each cast member used their rooms slightly differently. Some treated them as a 'home away from home' and even brought in beds for naps during breaks from filming, while others preferred to keep things as basic as possible.

After a quick trip into wardrobe and make-up, visitors are then guided into one of the tour's main highlights - Stage One, which housed the sets for the show's interior scenes.

Carla's former flat, the Platt family's home and the Dobbs house are among those on display, and they have been fully dressed for the tour in exactly the same way they would for a scene.

Lighting, Interior design, Room, Textile, Floor, Ceiling, Interior design, Light fixture, Decoration, Linens,

While it's often been said by those who have been lucky enough to see the sets, fans really will be struck by how small they seem in real life. For example, seeing how tiny the Platt kitchen is, it's difficult to imagine how the cast all fit in for those awkward family meals we often see!

Just like the dressing rooms, no two sets are the same. Set designers always made sure that Carla's kitchen was spotless - reflecting how infrequently she ever cooked in there - while the messier Platt house illustrates the chaotic reality of family life with David, Kylie and the kids.

Lighting, Interior design, Floor, Ceiling, Light fixture, Interior design, Houseplant, Picture frame, Flowerpot, Ceiling fixture,

Of course, no trip to Corrie would be complete without a trip to the Rovers Return, where fans have the chance to have a picture taken while pulling a pint behind the bar. This can be purchased later on in the tour, though fans are free to take their own photos once they move onto the exterior Street set.

While other sets on Stage One could be moved as filming required, The Rovers was the most important set of them all - always staying in the same place as it's required for almost every episode.

Lighting, Room, Interior design, Hardwood, Wood stain, Interior design, Light fixture, Picture frame, Cabinetry, Tavern,

Elsewhere in the studio, there are plenty of props and memorabilia to be found from storylines old and new - from Deirdre Barlow's glasses to the tram crash rubble and Roy Cropper's train set.

Yellow, Text, Font, Signage, Advertising, Gas, Banner, Poster, Sign,

Fans are also guided into the production suites for an insight into the responsibilities of the behind-the-scenes team who bring Corrie to our screens for five episodes each week.

Unsurprisingly, the highlight of the tour is the 'grand reveal' of the Street itself. Emerging from the door to Nick's Bistro, visitors are brought onto the cobbles and given free reign to explore Coronation Street and the surrounding area.

The Rovers, The Kabin, the Corner Shop, Roy's Rolls and the rest are all still standing at Quay Street as they were last year, so there are plenty of photo opportunities before the tour reaches its conclusion with a visit to the medical centre on Rosamund Street, which has now been transformed into a gift shop.

Building, Facade, Architecture, Brickwork, House, Brick,

With so much covered in the 45-minute tour, it's difficult to see how any fans wouldn't be impressed by the experience. As well as the obvious excitement of touring the show's famous locations, the attraction really does offer a strong insight into what life was like for the cast and crew as they worked on some of soapland's most memorable storylines at Quay Street.

Just don't let your visit spoil the illusion too much!

Brick, Architecture, Road surface, Infrastructure, Brickwork, Arch, Asphalt, Wall, Concrete, Composite material,

The Coronation Street tour runs until October 4 and tickets are available via Ticketmaster.

The set’s use started in 2014 following an ambitious move from the original site alongside Manchester’s Granada Studios on Quay Street so it only seems right that the public are able to marvel at it by joining 2018’s brand new tour - the tirelessly welcoming, infinitely knowledgeable and suitably witty tour guides present the facts in an engaging manner, sharing intimate secrets of the new set’s homage to the show’s history as the tour progresses. They encourage visitors to capture the special occasion of the tour on camera and invite you to make yourself truly at home on the fully operational TV set. Ultimately, the guides genuinely appear to be members of the Coronation Street crew.

Corrie on up the cobbles: We visit TV set that's open to the public for just six months

Mirrorgirl fulfills a childhood dream and goes behind the scenes at the classic Coronation Street

coronation street visit set

  • 19:46, 3 Apr 2014

This week, amid tight security, a national treasure was delivered in a locked briefcase to the most famous address in the land. No, not the Crown Jewels. Deirdre Barlow’s glasses.

Standing on Coronation Street outside the Rovers Return and modelling those iconic specs, I’m at once back in the days of Bet Lynch, Mike Baldwin and of course Jack and Vera Duckworth.

And from this weekend you can do the same. The famous TV set is opening to the public as a tourist attraction for six months before it is handed over to developers.

Filming has moved from this backlot at Granada Studios in Manchester to a larger, purpose-built set at Media City in Salford. But the Coronation Street we know and love is still right here, down to the Newton and Ridley beermats in the Rovers.

Walking down these famous cobbles you expect Norris to come flouncing out of The Kabin to share his latest gossip, or for Tracy Barlow and Steve McDonald to be bickering over our Amy outside Roy’s Rolls.

Executive producer Kieran Roberts tells me: “We had outgrown this site but have so years of amazing memories here. Walking round you are reminded of so many stories and characters, and we are really excited that we can share this with the public.”

Not as excited as I am. When I was a kid the Corrie music meant it was bedtime so mum and dad could settle down and watch it in peace. It was a special treat to stay up late and watch Ken and Deirdre and now my own kids beg for that extra half-hour to find out what David and Kylie do next.

So standing behind the bar in the Rovers pretending to pour a pint of Newton and Ridleys is a dream come true. Move over Liz, Steve and Michelle, it’s my pub now.

Shame the beer in the pumps isn’t real. Tour guide Howard tells me it’s watered-down shandy with a bit of cola to give it the right colour. They use apple juice as whisky and brandy, and water for vodka.

He adds: “Betty’s hotpot is leftovers from the canteen with a few sliced potatoes on top. If they have fight scenes in the pub they replace the furniture with copies made from balsa wood so they break easily.”

Despite all these real-world details you can sense the presence of ghosts from years gone by. Annie Walker, Albert Tatlock, Elsie Tanner, Eddie Yates, Richard Hillman...

And then the Corrie serial killer who met his death in the icy-cold canal sits down next to me at the bar. It’s actor Brian Capron, who played Hillman from 2001 to 2003, returning for a look round.

He says: “It is fantastic to be back here. It has got so much atmosphere and character. I remember the first time I walked out on to Coronation Street it was a ‘wow’ moment. The set has developed so much character over the years. To me it is like a listed building, part of history. So many iconic characters that have passed through here and you feel at home with them. Some of my favourite scenes were with Jack and Vera – so funny, such wonderful people.”

Moving on to the Duckworths’ living room at No?9 there are traces of the much-loved couple everywhere. Tour guide David tells me: “In 1983 when Jack and Vera moved in, Vera really thought she’d gone up in the world so they installed a bar. On the wall is the framed cheque from when Jack’s brother died . He thought he was going to be left a lot of debt – instead he got £30,000.”

The couple’s famous waterfall picture still has pride of place on the wall and the centre-piece of the room is the worn armchair where we saw both characters take their last breaths.

But you can also tell that young couple Fizz and Tyrone live at No?9 now, with baby toys littering the room.

The set designers and wardrobe department work hard to make sure each personality is reflected in their homes and clothes. As you would imagine, Ken Barlow’s socks come from Marks and Spencer while Roy Cropper’s gets his jumpers on eBay.

In the wardrobe department, tour guide Liz tells me: “Some of the actors bring in bits of their own stuff. Roy’s famous bag is such an iconic part of him, but it actually belonged to the actor David Neilson’s mum.”

In Carla Connor’s original flat it’s clear she thinks she is a cut above the Weatherfield norm. Rich plum-coloured flock wallpaper, plush fabrics on the sofa, wooden flooring and moody lighting all tell us someone with a few quid lives here.

The kitchen is like a showroom. Everything in its place, nothing used. Carla isn’t the kind who stuffs a chicken or peels her spuds, so the only culinary action here involves opening a takeaway box and sipping a large glass of red after a long day at Underworld.

The Platts’ front room looks tiny compared to how it appears on screen when Gail and Kylie are having a barney. You can see how Gail tries to cling on to her traditional decor, despite Kylie’s flamboyant touches such as a hot pink leopard-print sofa cover.

The last time the public could visit Corrie was as part of a Granada Studios tour from 1988 to 1999. But it was still a working location so visitors didn’t see the interiors at all.

The new Media City set is in fact the third incarnation of the Street. From 1960 until 1982 the whole was inside the studio complex with houses 75% of normal size. This bigger outdoor set was opened by The Queen in 1982, but the interiors are only 70% of normal size, so the stairs leading up from the living room in the Platts seem tiny and cramped.

Here and there you find display cases of iconic objects – everything from Ena Sharples’ hairnet and Hilda Ogden’s curlers to Annie Walker’s white gloves and the ornament which Tracy Barlow used to kill Charlie Stubbs.

Before I leave I peer into The Kabin window and among the faded toys, jigsaws and games is an advert on a postcard saying“Leather chaps, 32in waist, good as new. Call Jason.”

Classic Corrie.

Will I meet the cast?

Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that you'll get to meet any of your favourite characters as the tour takes place when the cast and crew aren't filming.

So unless you happen to be lucky enough to chance across a cast member who's decided to pop in on their day off, you might have to accept that the set is the only part of the show that you'll be able to enjoy in the flesh.

However, fret not, there's a whole host of other things to do and bundles of entertainment included in the fun day out!
